Cordonian Royal Family (A Bad Romance Extra)
I wanted to share these images because they're fabulous. I didn't make most of them, I suck at these things, but I love them and felt like they should be seen by others. Of course, me being me, I wanted to give information about each character but if I'm doing that, then it needs to read like an article in the Cordonian Star so here we are. Enjoy! The article is under the cut.
These images were all generated by the AI art app Wonder. For anyone interested, you may see my AI art disclaimer here.
Tumblr media
It’s been one year since the death of His Royal Majesty Constantine Arthur Augustus Hector Rys in an unfortunate ceiling collapse at the palace just days before the current king announced his engagement to the queen.
King Constantine was married three times, sired two sons, and fostered three other children. Here is a look at the royal family today.
Photos by Ana De Luca.
His Royal Majesty Liam Nicolai Ulysses Augustus Rys
King of Cordonian, Duke of Stormholt, Duke of Bellmede, Duke of Valtoria, Earl of Alriel, Earl of Ennan, Earl of Lykos, Baron of Throngate, Lord of the Isles and Commander in Chief of the Cordonian Royal Forces.
Tumblr media
From Spare to Heir. Never meant for the throne, this second-born son of royalty was thrust into the role of leader when his older brother abdicated. Many believe he was always more temperamentally suited for the role. Indeed, after a rocky start, Cordonia has thrived under his leadership.
Tied romantically to only a small number of women in his youth, (and one alleged man), King Liam’s younger years were as devoid of scandal and impropriety as his brother’s were full of them. He received good marks at the prestigious, elite Wellingford Academy and later Epton College.
He managed to stay out of the spotlight for the most part until his eventful social season. Marrying a commoner and a foreigner, changing the laws of succession for his children, and legalizing gay marriage, he has a track record as a progressive and is viewed favorably by the majority of Cordonians.
Her Royal Majesty Riley Catherine Brooks Rys
Queen of Cordonian, Duchess of Stormholt, Duchess of Bellmede, Duchess of Valtoria, Countess of Alriel, Countess of Ennan, Countess of Lykos, Baroness of Throngate, Lady of the Isles and Champion of the Realm.
Tumblr media
Rumored to have had a contentious relationship with the late king, this last-minute addition to the present king’s social season was a long shot. As an American and a commoner, she reportedly was not King Constantine’s first, or even second, choice for his son.
Always King Liam’s favorite, however, she was a front-runner from the moment she set foot on Cordonian soil, her beauty, charm, and grace captivating the nation. Meeting at a bar in New York where she was his waitress, their whirlwind romance seemingly ended in scandal, accusations of infidelity, and the king’s engagement to another woman.
Their love endured despite the obstacles and in an astonishing turn of events, not only was her name cleared, but the king made a move as historically unprecedented as it was shocking, breaking a council-approved political engagement and marrying for love.
Prince Leonardo Tiberius Constantine Fabian Rys
Prince of Cordonia, Duke of Abanthus, Earl of Ebrimel, Baron of Auverneen.
Tumblr media
Born into privilege and wealth, he threw it all away in what many consider a selfish and short-sighted move led by the vagaries and hubris of youth. Other interpretations range from the young prince simply recognizing that his brother was better suited to rule; to unsubstantiated rumors that he was pressured into stepping down by his father.
Prince Leo bounced around between elite boarding schools, both domestic and abroad before making barely passable marks at Epton College. Dubbed by the media as the Playboy Prince of the Mediterranean, he has been romantically linked to the likes of Olivia Nevrakis, Duchess of Lythikos, Princess Margot of Auvernall, and American actress Victoria Fontaine.
Abdicating both as Crown Prince of Cordonian and Duke of Stormholt, he retains the title of Prince as well as holding the titles Duke of Abanthus, Earl of Ebrimel, and Baron of Auverneen while living abroad. The Playboy Prince is still unattached.
Captain Drake Nolan Walker
Lord Commander of the Queen’s Guard, Knight Protector of the Realm.
Tumblr media
Born to commoners, he and his sister were taken in and raised by the royal family after his father’s death in service to the crown. Having lived in the palace since the age of six, he became a ward of the crown at age fourteen and received the same basic upbringing and education as the princes.
Unlike the princes, he dedicated his life to military service, later following in his father’s footsteps by transferring to the Royal Guard. During King Liam’s social season, Captain Walker was charged with killing a man. All charges were eventually dropped, and he was exonerated when it came out that he was acting undercover on the king’s orders as a de facto member of Queen Riley’s security detail.
He currently serves the crown as captain of the Queen’s Guard, lives at the palace, remains close friends with the king, and is by all accounts deeply devoted to the queen.
Her Grace Savannah Evangeline Walker Beaumont
Duchess of Ramsford.
Tumblr media
Like her brother, the duchess became a ward of the crown after the death of her father when she was twelve years old. She retained the title of Lady until the advent of her marriage to the Duke of Ramsford, Bertrand Beaumont, raised her status to duchess.
Scandal rocked Duchy Ramsford when it was revealed that the duchess had a child out of wedlock. She left Cordonia, taking the heir to Ramsford with her. She lived abroad for a year before returning and reuniting with the duke. They were married in an elaborate ceremony a few months after her return.
Unidentified sources close to the couple report the marriage is strained and often rocky.
His Grace Bertrand Atticus Beaumont
Duke of Ramsford, Leader of the House of Lords, Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal.
Tumblr media
Taking on the role of Duke at a young age, he, along with the rest of the world, was shocked by the return of his presumed dead father, the late Duke Barthelemy Beaumont. His Grace relinquished control of the duchy to his father only to pick up the mantle again a few months later when the late Duke of Ramsford was killed in a head-on collision on his way home from a meeting at the palace.
He currently serves in the House of Lords as The Lord Leader, a position he has held for the last five years.
His ties to the monarchy are many and varied. His marriage to Savannah Walker made him a de facto member of the royal family, as did making the queen an official member of House Beaumont as part of his sponsorship of her during the king’s social season. His younger brother, Lord Maxwell Beaumont serves as the queen's top advisor and personal assistant. Prince Leo is a close friend, was the best man at his wedding, and is godfather to his son.
Lord Barthelemy Jackson Beaumont
Future Duke of Ramsford.
Tumblr media
As the only child of the Duke and Duchess of Ramsford, young Lord Barthelemy is the heir to the duchy, nephew to the Lord Commander of the Queen’s Guard Captain Drake Walker, and to the queen’s personal assistant, Lord Maxwell Beaumont, has Prince Leo as a godfather and is treated as a grandchild by the queen mother.
Her Grace Olivia Vanderwall Nevrakis
Duchess of Lythikos, Counsellor of State.
Tumblr media
Also a ward of the crown, Duchess Olivia Nevrakis lost her parents in a tragic car accident when she was five years old. The late Queen Eleanor sent for her, and she was raised and educated at the palace, taking over control of Duchy Lythikos from her aunt at the age of sixteen.
Lythikos has thrived under her leadership, and she is beloved by the people. A suitor in King Liam’s social season, she has also been romantically linked to his brother, Prince Leo. Sources close to the duchess report that her participation in the social season was out of courtesy and duty as she and the king have always enjoyed a close friendship, but nothing more.
She currently resides at Lykos Keep, sits on the king’s small council, and divides her time between Lythikos and the capital.
Her Royal Majesty Regina Beatrice Amaranth Rys
Queen Mother, Dowager Duchess of Stormholt, Countess of Loutreo.
Tumblr media
Born in Krona, her father was the younger brother of the late Duke, Karolos Amaranth. The current Duchess of Krona, Adelaide Amaranth, is her cousin. A countess in her own right, she became queen when she married King Constantine after a lengthy courtship.
She was the late king’s third wife. Marrying later in life, she had no biological children of her own but was instrumental in the upbringing of both her stepsons and the other three children entrusted to the monarchs’ care.
Now a widow, the queen mother continues to live at the palace, advises the queen, and works with the various charities she has championed over the years, notably Hope Haven a nationwide organization that works with homeless youth, and The Empowerment Zone a nonprofit helping single mothers.
Her Royal Highness Eleanor Elizabeth Hana Olivia Rys
Crown Princess of Cordonia.
Tumblr media
Born just six days ago, Cordonia’s newest princess has already captivated the hearts of the nation. The king and queen have retreated to the queen’s estate in Valtoria while they adjust to new parenthood, taking with them, among others, the queen's personal assistant, Lord Maxwell Beaumont. No nannies are yet in residence, but Duchess Hana Lee, the queen’s best friend and official Master of the Household, is.
This exclusive photo, which originally appeared in The Cordonian Star yesterday, is the only public photograph of the crown princess, who was named after her grandmother, the late Queen Eleanor.

Chapter 21 of Nona the Ninth
Tumblr media
I don't understand why she did that? She knew it would be We Suffer listening and making the call on whether to shoot her, and that she would consider stealing Judith to be betrayal. I still have no idea why Camilla saved her here, other than just that Camilla doesn't particularly want her to die? Pyrrha had not appeared or said any codewords at the time she objected to the shot. Corona obviously wasn't collaborating with Pyrrha to communicate things to Camilla and Nona via codewords, I don't think she expected to see Pyrrha there at all and she doesn't know about the codewords, either. So I don't know what her plan for not getting shot was? Was she just hoping that Ianthe would take in Judith after she got shot?
Tumblr media
This seems to be setting things up to say that Nona is actually Gideon, but I don't think that's correct, for numerous reasons. I guess we'll probably find out what's up when they get ahold of Gideon's body
Tumblr media
I can't find this particular code. Going back to the beginning of the book, supposedly the code for "someone listening" was "fritters", but I don't see Pyrrha saying that anywhere in the last chapter
Tumblr media
I did find these ones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's clever, I didn't expect those to come back, presumably the important resource is Gideon's body and not Ianthe's cigarette stash (does she still think smoking is cool after she decided to sacrifice Augustine to the Stoma? I wonder). But I don't think I would have been able to find those again without the Nook app's search function
Tumblr media
Yes, they do give weird incest vibes
I'm surprised that We Suffer is offering to give them a shuttle and information on the Sixth House in exchange for Gideon's body - I think since she no longer has Judith, she no longer has a way to leave the planet and get to a place where she can use it to open the Tomb. Or does the wider BOE have a way to rescue them that they'll use if they get ahold of Gideon's body? It sounded like from what We Suffer said about the mysterious package she wants them to take with them that she is stuck
Tumblr media
So yeah, John obviously made no attempt to resurrect Gideon, and it doesn't even sound like anyone is puppeting her corpse like Ianthe is with Naberius? I'd say he lost his mind, but I think we're going to eventually find out that that already happened 10,000 years ago at this point
I wonder if there's going to be some reveal at some point that John can't actually resurrect anyone, and whatever happened during the Resurrection was like, a one-time fluke, or Alecto actually did it, or something like that? Because he started out Harrow the Ninth telling Harrow that he can't resurrect the Ninth House because "the cost is too great" but it never became clear what he meant by that or why that was the case, and now he's clearly not resurrecting Gideon despite that being the obvious thing for him to do. I think there weren't any Lyctors other than Cytherea that died in a way where they could in theory have been resurrected: Cassiopeia was torn apart by angry ghosts, Cyrus went into a black hole, Ulysses went into the Stoma, and Anastasia wasn't a Lyctor
Tumblr media
So the theory now is that they think Harrow would have reappeared where Number Seven is, and so they broadcast Gideon's body to get Harrow back? Except... during Ianthe's last interaction with Harrow's body, it was being occupied by Gideon. So maybe Gideon's body is also meant to lure Gideon in Harrow's body in addition to Harrow in Harrow's body?
Tumblr media
I have no idea what the exchange is about
Tumblr media
Was this like, 12 year old Corona suggesting making wards out of cum or something
Tumblr media
Right, so obviously we're meant to interpret this as being code:
Tumblr media
but I can't find any instance of "None" being used as a nickname for Nona in this whole book, and as amply demonstrated by this example, "none" is in fact a pronoun, which would make it confusing to be used as a nickname - it'd be like nicknaming someone "You" or something like that, there'd be no real clear indication when it was being used with its usual meaning and when it was meant to refer to Nona. So this seems like a really big stretch
Tumblr media
Surely colored contacts are going to be easier to find than iris dye?
Anyway, I guess Nona is going to go pretend to be Harrow

We Control the Narrative - On Website Eugenics, Homestuck, and Your Problematic Favs
Written by Sophia 🌀
I entered the digital realm at about 10 years old, just barely witnessing the shift from the web to apps. I played Runescape on a dusty old desktop fitted with Windows XP and would browse open forums for games I would never play. But as much as I try to remember the endless dotcom online world, works like Kate Wagner’s 404 Page Not Found expose just how far gone that era truly is. For two decades now, the internet has been gradually appropriated by a powerful few, corralling an expansive and free userbase into an easily controlled market.
Tumblr media
Kate Wagner effectively captures the fleeting memories of the open internet in a time before apps, and the "thrill of the hunt" that came from this open landscape. Any hyperlink you navigated through could have opened up into a new world; knowledge you could have never imagined, groundbreaking new media that nobody had seen before, or complete communities redefining what it meant to have a personal blog.
This quote pulled from internet historian Olia Lialina summarizes the landscape best:
“It was a web of sudden connections and personal links. Pages were built on the edge of tomorrow, full of hope for a faster connection and a more powerful computer.”
But in a post-iPhone world, the shift towards streamlined and prescribed apps neglected the web into obsolescence. Maximalism gave way to minimalism, UIs gradually deteriorated, urging you to download their new app or subtly manipulating the content that browsers would expose users to. As a 90s kid, Wagner watched this happen in the fall of MySpace, where personal archives were purged simply because it was not profitable to keep them around. For me, it was the fall of Adobe Flash, and the creative media that it took away.
Tumblr media
Adobe Flash and I go way back, with my most memorable internet experience happening on April 6th 2016, when the multimedia webcomic Homestuck released the flash video  [S] Collide as the conclusion to Act 6. Since its debut in 2009, Homestuck has become a legend of the early web; a rich and expansive digital narrative that the Atlantic dubbed “a story that could only be told online”. By blending IM chatlogs as dialogue, GIFs as panels, flash media, fully animated videos with complete soundtracks, and a one-of-a-kind narrative, this interactive site would draw in millions of users with each update and bridge the divide between forums, personal blogs, and social networks like Twitter.
Tumblr media
When Adobe Flash went down in 2020, Viz Media (having recently acquired publishing rights) made little effort to preserve this 8000+ page time capsule. This prompted fans of the series to come together to compile the Unofficial Homestuck Collection, an optimized, offline version of the original site, even offering language filters to correct its less tasteful writing choices. This was an invaluable act, but it also represents a process of corporate neglect, and this ongoing cleansing of any media online that is deemed unworthy of preservation. Wagner compared this to a series of minor Libraries of Alexandria being burned to the ground, and rich personal narratives being buried beneath a controlled legacy of human history.
“The artifacts of internet life are personal—that is, not professionally or historically notable—and therefore worthless.”
Tumblr media
Homestuck fans are split between those who recognize it as a postmodern masterpiece comparable to Ulysses, and those who would be happy to see it left in the rubble of the old web. I understand the desire to leave the unfavourable behind us, but accepting the latter narrative gives in to what Wagner called “Website Eugenics”; A process of devaluing the maximalist, often personalized and gaudy, or in some way flawed in favour of the minimalist, rigid professional class standards being set for the contemporary web. In the case of “dated” media, either cringey personal blogs from middle school or crass lowbrow humour, they will be posited as a damper on material history, when in fact it is deeply human.
Tumblr media
The more that we accept a narrative of some remnants being of value, and others being a poor reflection of our popular culture, the more that we allow an oppressive power dynamic to play out. Internet historians, archivists, and cultural commentators like Kate Wagner are doing what they know combats this agenda; revel in the legacy of the early web, retain all that you can, and do it authentically.

I'm in the last push to finish my dissertation, so I upgraded my study setup.
The two main apps I'm using here are Ulysses for writing, and Liquid Text for my notes. Over the last year or so, I've been reading and annotating entirely in Liquid Text to build a large set of references for the dissertation. You can see in the image both the original text and where I've pulled out passages into my workspace; the red lines connect the two, and each acts as a clickable link to the relevant document and page; I've got about 30 documents in this workspace, meaning that those links are a lifesaver. Normally, I just have this on my iPad, where Liquid Text has excellent Pencil integration, however for just these next few weeks I've bought a subscription to Liquid Text Live to sync with my Mac. I then took the TV from my house and brought it to my office, so that I can throw up my entire workspace on a bigass screen, while doing the writing on my Mac's smaller screen. I also threw an orange filter over everything to reduce eyestrain (this can be found in the accessibility settings on a Mac). Finally, since the TV and Mac are running the whole business end, I set up my iPad to control Spotify, which has been weirdly helpful for not breaking workflow; my ADHD gets triggered pretty badly by certain music things, so having a touch screen right there to skip songs or start a loop has helped. Honestly, this last year has been illuminating. I've gotten more done in the last 13 or so months than in the last 4 years combined, and a major part of that has been the integration of these kinds of tools. Liquid Text (and to a lesser extent Ulysses) has been critical in managing my ADHD, and especially my executive dysfunction. Being able to have all my readings ready to go on a device drastically reduces how many spoons it takes to start reading, and Liquid Text's method of annotation assists in preventing attention problems, both by reducing workflow interruptions and also in making the writing process far less tedious by consolidating all my annotations from different documents into a single workspace, which itself helps in the same way vis-à-vis attention and executive dysfunction.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this system for most ADHD folks; it's definitely overkill. All the tools help, for sure, but would not be worth the expense. We only have a TV at all because my wife was entered into (and won) a random drawing when she was working in the UPS warehouse. I probably wouldn't try to afford a Mac for school purposes; I have one because I'm an electronic musician, and happened to be in (relatively) solid financial position at the time. I was still on stipend, was adjuncting to supplement, had a trade in, and my wife hadn't yet gone back to school. In my current financial status, I probably would be writing my dissertation on the iPad, or at most would have something very minimal; maybe a chromebook.
With that in mind, I would recommend an iPad running Liquid Text, with a Pencil to any ADHD academic that can afford it. It was a major financial stress for us; I only just finished paying mine off, but it was absolutely worth it, for me. Moreover, one really doesn't have to be in the Apple ecosystem to get the most out of it. Two of my colleagues have picked up iPads and Liquid Text, and have had similarly excellent results, and both are generally speaking Windows users. I've heard that the Windows iteration of Liquid Text isn't quite as stable as the Mac version, but that's hardly a dealbreaker. In point of fact, one of my colleagues isn't paying for desktop sync at all, and has found just having the iPad workspace is adequate.
