you should share your jeanscott gender/sexuality thoughts sometime... 👯‍♀️❤
well lmao they are not very organized but i will take the opportunity to ramble...
i feel like i talk about scott all the time so it is jean's turn. recently (for like. the last couple of months) i have been really into the idea of like. teenage butch he/him lesbian cyclops, and kind of plopping that version of cyclops into the jeanscott (and secret closeted bobby drake) situation of the younger x-men and earlier x-men stories.
bc i think a jean in this context is very compelling! yk i think a lot about jean's encounter w her parents and sarah during the dark phoenix saga, i think a lot about her as a child and her parents trying to find any way they can to deal with a mutation that is overwhelming for her, and i think of jean's position in the x-men, the way she's good and perfect and well-liked and a doll. and i think about the way jean reacts when she's out of control, when her body or her beauty are threatened and like. idk i get the impression that jean's a character who tries really really hard to be good, to be perfect, to make up for her mutation and the danger of her mutation and how hard it is for her to control sometimes. its very defensive. and in that context i think its very easy to imagine being attracted to woman as something that kind of rocks jean's world that (in a way similar to bobby) adds something else to be dealt with, along side her mutation. and as someone who really likes bobby's and jean's friendship its really interesting to me to think about those stories operating side by side.
i also think that like. in uncanny x-men #308, jean says that part of what started breaking down the psychic barriers blocking her telepathy when she was younger was her crush on scott. she reached out to him, at first unknowingly, bc she wanted to connect with him, she wanted to share and she wanted to interact w another person (i think this is very sweet). but jean is also clearly reluctant for a long time to actually fully connect using her telepathy. in a more recent comic (jean grey #2) she mentions being drawn to scott but forcing herself not to reach out and touch this 'inner fire'.
anyway my point is you can very easily make that a repressed gay thing yk. like man she sure is drawn to this person, she sure wants to connect with scott on a deep level, but she forces herself to hold back. is this not compelling young adult angst.
my thinking on jeanscott sexuality stuff is very repressed gay focused, bc i am a formerly very repressed lesbian who is now a slightly less repressed lesbian. and that colors my view and the stuff i find interesting to explore. i do always love talking about this stuff tho.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I normally write a review about Thanksgiving comics but this year I was busier than expected. Luckily, I have a backlog of a couple reviews:
From 2021- I talk about the classic Uncanny X-men #308 aka the issue where Scott and Jean get engaged!
Tumblr media
Read it here
And from 2022- Power Pack #19 aka that time the Power Pack invited everyone to Thanksgiving dinner

Note
do you have any specific comic recs for jean and scott
i'm assuming you mean as a couple? i don't really, but i do have a list of some of the jeanscott issues that really impact my read on them.
classic x-men #6
uncanny x-men #94, #100, #101, #113, #132/#133 ( i think the phoenix/scott psychic link stuff is pretty important, and i think them having sex in new mexico is also significant), #137
x-factor #1, #7-9, #18 #26, #53
uncanny x-men #308
x-men #30
adventures of cyclops and phoenix, & the further adventures of cyclops and phoenix
uncanny x-men #356, #376-379 (this is where cyclops dies)
x-men #97 & 98 are also part of scott dying and the immediate aftermath.
thoughts on their relationship (jean and scott reflecting on their relationship, or hallucinations/dream sequences)
classic x-men #26, uncanny x-men #114, #175, x-factor #13, #29 (which could honestly be grouped with the stuff above but it involves a lot of jean thinking over her relationship with scott)
and that's what i have off the top of my head! thanks for asking <3

alyson’s fav scotts, part 1
(edit march 2022: i started drafting this heckin post like, a few months ago and only now remembered i had it. since i’m still without my own computer and can’t put up anything right now, i’ll finish this up quick and post it) i’m still at 0% capacity for... anything,  so here’s some comics arts of scott summers that don’t send my eyeballs rolling off into space i actually really like (and may have used as refs/inspiration for my own interpretations), yay!
usually xmen comic art is... not great, and i don’t have to outline the annoying and nonsensical samey cishet male powerfantasy western comic-art is drenched in, do i?
But every once in a while you get some good stuff...
Tumblr media
[image description: a comic panel closeup of scott summers looking down at jean grey, whose hair is barely visible in the bottom left corner of the panel as she stands closer in the shot, the rest of her body out of frame. Scott’s red glasses reflect the top of jean’s face in each lens.  His eyebrows are furrowed but visible above the rim of his glasses, causing a singular slight crease in his forehead as he awkwardly smiles in a questioning expression towards jean.  In a small speech-bubble, scott asks “What about-” only to be cutt off by Jean’s speech-bubbles, which say “-- The X-Men?! This is our home, Scott... We belong here”. End description]
uncanny x-men 308 (page 17), pencilled by John Romita Jr, inked by Dan Green and Al Vey, coloured by Steve Buccellato.
This is during a conversation scott and jean are having, reflecting on their life and love and where to go from here (she’s gonna propose to him in a lil bit, like the wonderful gremlin she is). I love this panel in particular because of scott’s wry uncertain smile: i feel like that sort of expression is so very him, and the way his face and head and everything looks at this angle aligns with my own internal view of him and what I try to accomplish with my own art. It all clicks together nicely.
Talking about the rest of the panel, I love the detail of jean being reflected in scott’s glasses.  That’s just some good shit right there, all those implications and that symbolism.  While you can’t make out her expression very clearly, you can see she looks pretty confident and (more apparently) she’s staring straight at scott, no futzin around, just direct.  To me that’s jean.  That’s a jean grey right there.  Love these dorks.
