#unfortunately idk yet if there is a limit to how many pages you can make on cohost total; I think tumblr is technically limitless?

You know, a minor positive about making an account somewhere that is almost totally foreign to you is that you don't know yet specifically who to block, and so can just block as you go. It's more risk, but a bit less labor-intensive this way.
The downside is that these places usually see a lot less activity, and so you often have very little reason to even go there in the first place (Cohost and especially Pillowfort come to mind).

Question is the legacy editor any good? I've never used it because I'm paranoid about it messing my posts up lmao but I'm curious
The short answer is yes. Legacy editor, the older way tumblr did posting, is in my opinion, the superior editor. I love the legacy editor. A lot. It is definitely superior and I'm sad staff has decided to slowly get rid of it.
However! With that said I've been pretty much exclusively using the beta post editor for the last like year when staff announced that they'd be eliminating the legacy editor eventually so I thought it'd be a good idea to get used to the beta editor. Which I suppose I did. I've gotten used to it and don't use legacy much at all anymore. I also wanted to use it because I got really tired of not being able to edit in mobile the posts I made on web using the legacy editor. With the beta editor you can edit across platforms which is soooo nice. (although it appears that in one of the apps many updates I can now edit a gifset I made today via legacy editor but not the posts I've made in the past using the legacy editor so who knows what's going with that).
But there's a lot of annoying things about the new beta editor that make it inferior to the legacy editor and I'm praying that staff will improve it. For starters, and probably my biggest complaint, is how awful it is to upload and rearrange images. It's so much easier in legacy editor to move images around. In beta the page moves when you start to move the image and it drives me CRAZY!!! I always end up putting the image in the wrong place because the page won't stop moving! Legacy is wonderful to arrange images. I do think the upload is slightly better in beta purely because it uploads multiple images in the order I select them where the legacy just puts them in whatever order it wants to and I have to remember what order I wanted my gifs in.
Legacy is also better because it actually differentiates between an image post and a text post. With the beta editor everything is technically a test post. So my gifsets are not considered an "image post". Some people have noted that the beta, since it's not an image post, it resizes the images a little and sometimes decreases the quality of the gif by doing that. I haven't really noticed that myself with my own gifs but doesn't mean it isnt happening.
The legacy editor also allows me to upload my gifs without stupid errors for no reason. Lately any time I upload more than 6 gifs at once I get an error message and have to upload them one by one. Its not because of size because they're always under 7mbs so I don't know why I can't upload them all at once. I hate it actually. And sometimes my gif will be under 10mbs (like 9.7mbs) and it'll tell me that the gif is too big. Excuse me tumblr but 9.7 is smaller than 10! I never had this problem in legacy.
The legacy editor is also better when it comes to using html, inserting links as text and not the stupid thing beta does where you paste the link and it becomes that stupid post preview thing that I hate, and oh my god is it awful for text blocks! When it first came out you couldnt select multiple texts blocks at all. You can now but it isn't the easiest. And it like expands when you do and makes it weird. Idk it's hard to describe. In legacy you can just...select all the text with no problems. Text blocks are treated like individual sections in the beta and make editing a major pain in the ass.
I also don't like thst apparently new xkit won't work in beta and you have to use xkit rewritten because fuck I don't want to learn how to use that one when I've been using new xkit for years but I guess I'm gonna have to now. I haven't been having any problems with xkit yet but who knows....
So yeah I think overall legacy is better. Beta Post Editor has some good things (I like the increased image upload limit, the editing tags is good) about it but there's so many problems. Unfortunately we're stuck with it so I've been sticking to using it exclusively to make the transition easier on myself. I do suggest becoming used to how it works and to just continue to provide feedback to staff about features we dislike or bugs we come across. Hopefully they'll listen and improve it.

hi! i’m very interested in history and would love to study it in college, but i don’t know what careers i could get with a history major besides being a teacher. are you planning on becoming a teacher, or do you have other career suggestions for those studying history? tysm if you respond!
so, here's a testament to how terrible i am at running this ramshackle blog - i just found this in my drafts after goodness knows how long and frankly i dread to count back and find out. but it is a very good question and i am very, very sorry for taking probably months to do this, and even if this no longer interests you (i apologise again) i'm going to post anyway in case it interests somebody else. going under the cut because this might become a tad long-winded - there's also a tl;dr at the very end of the post for those who don't want to sift through my stream of thoughts.
i am not personally planning on becoming a teacher, at least not in a high school level or younger - still have far too many Spicy Memories from that age to want to return to a school setting in any capacity. academia does appeal to me a lot more as an option - i'm loving my dissertation work and there are lots of areas within my broad field of medieval northern europe with room for fresh, new research. i could specialise in any number of areas, but right now what appeals to me most is literary history and archaeology. unfortunately, my course isn't running the archaeology paper it usually offers as part of the second year setup this year, so i won't get to try out specialising in it, but it's something that's grabbed my attention more and more over the course of my first year of study.
beyond remaining within academia or going into archaeology, i've also considered museum work and archival work. my interest in working in a museum has sprung from a similar place to my interest in archaeology - i've discovered that staying holed up writing at a desk all day, every day can be very draining and, more importantly, that working with physical, material history right in my hands and before my very eyes is Really Super Cool and Exciting. i would very happily look into options for working in a museum in curation or conservation, helping to preserve artefacts and make them accessible to the general public. archival work comes from a similar place, too - i guess it combines my interest in literary history with the feeling of intimacy and immediacy that comes with working with material history.
steering away from fields directly relevant to history, i'd also love to spend some time working in a library - any kind at all, from my local public library to something more academic. one of the papers i'm taking is palaeography, the study of manuscripts, which i've developed a much greater fondness for than i expected to when i started. it's made me really interested in working in an academic library that curates and cares for collections of older manuscripts, i guess like a crossover of a library and a museum.
there's a few areas too that aren't directly related to my degree, but are helped and supplemented by it - these are translation, publishing, and creative writing. languages and literature have always been my strongest subject in school, so it helps a lot for me that my course is interdisciplinary, combining study of medieval languages, literature, and history rather than being strictly a history degree. i maintain a good standard of french and german from when i studied them at school and i'm also learning danish, norwegian, and swedish on the side. the last three are mainly just for reading purposes as i sometimes get set academic articles to read in those languages, but i'd love to work and study in norway some day so i'm practicing norwegian to a more proficient/practical level. at some stage, probably once i've completed my degree, i'd like to save some money aside to take exams and hopefully get qualifications in some of those languages - probably german and norwegian - just to have some formal acknowledgement of my work to hand if i ever want to pursue any programmes or qualifications in translation studies. literary translation, working with creative literature rather than formal documents or academic writing, is something i'm very sure i would enjoy.
publishing is harder to describe, i guess. i have a small role as the editor of my department's silly little student magazine and i'd like to expand and apply to editorial positions at other, marginally more respectable student publications - it's certainly a role i'm enjoying a lot, although i haven't done much research into the professional publishing industry yet. it's on the backburner until i pull my life together enough to properly research career options there.
alternatively, the one thing that has always been my go-to dream job since i was a kid is just 'writer'. i love writing fiction and poetry, i have spent at least some of my free time each week writing whatever comes to mind for as long as i can remember. i have a big fantasy project on the go at the moment that i don't really talk about on this blog, but i do now have the beginnings of a world anvil page talking about it which is linked in my pinned post. i'm not banking on it or considering it as a very reliable option, but i will keep slowly and lovingly building it until it's ready to share, and then i'll simply see what happens next.
(if it took off though, i would drop everything else in my life like a hot plate and live out my silly little childhood dream to its fullest potential. tween magnus deserves some justice in this life.)
anyways - TL;DR now:
jobs i'm personally interested in:
academia/professional scholar
museum curator or conservator
archaeology
archivist
librarian
literary translator
something in the publishing industry idk
writer
general history-degree-related advice:
there are more options out there than just teaching which are directly related to the field of history. the more you dig into your area of interest, the more weird and whacky jobs you never expected to exist will crop up on your radar - i'm sure there are plenty of obscure things i've missed out here. unless you become a tenured professor or senior curator or secure a job at a particularly fancy/prestigious institution, none of these jobs pay particularly well, and academia especially is known for treating everyone who isn't a tenured senior academic like mud. therefore you pretty much have to be in these jobs out of passion rather than a desire to live comfortably and with above-average financial success. finally, most people i know at university, regardless of their field, aren't aiming to find careers directly relevant to said fields (apart from like, med students and lawyers and that kind of thing). especially in the humanities. none of us really know what we're doing. if you're comfortable studying these subjects for the pure passion and joy of it, fantastic, i'm right there the same with you - if you want something that has a more stable degree-to-career progression, humanities right now probably aren't top subjects. there's a whole ongoing cultural debate about how criminally undervalued humanities degrees and jobs are, and i hope that soon we'll see some tangible results from this - among them that all of the jobs i've listed above will be marginally better paid, and junior academics better treated within their fields.
history is wonderful. come join us. (also if anyone else doing humanities has points or advice that i've missed out, please feel free to add them, my scope of experience is still very limited)

Tumblr media
~Professor Hiddleston AU~
*Tom Hiddleston x reader*
Part: 1/30
Words: 3.3k
Warnings: Professor x student (college AU), possibly language and maybe even smut in later chapters idk
Summary: After transferring to a new university for the last year of your master's, you meet Professor Hiddleston and soon find yourself unable to stay away from him.
A.N.: I really suck at summaries, I'm so sorry 🙈 basically, this is a slow burn romance with lots of pining and yes, I like naming my stories after songs. Wicked Game by Chris Isaac is gonna appear quite a bit in the story I think, so you might just give it a listen now!
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] ...
All Parts can be found on my Masterlist!
_______________________________
If someone had told you on your first day of college that you would have to live through the whole thing again a few years later, you might just have quit and called it a day after breakfast. But now, multiple years after your actual first day, you were the new kid once again. Transferring colleges had been a hard decision, but there was no turning back now. You didn't yet know where the classrooms were or how you'd get to yours, but you still had fifteen minutes to go before your first class would start. So you walked through the hallways of your new school trying to find your room, taking in the overwhelming amount of people passing by. First day of class for you also meant first day of classes for everyone else and so the whole building was completely overcrowded. The close proximity made you nervous and combined with the uncertainty of where you needed to go, you felt yourself starting to panic. You stood in the middle of the hall, frozen to the spot and unable to move while people pushed past you, shoving and talking too loudly. The urge to run and hide grew stronger and stronger until you finally bolted, opening the first door you found unlocked and rushing it. It shut with a loud bang and you found yourself leaning against it from the inside. With closed eyes, silence and the returning ability to breathe deeply, you calmed down a little.
"Hello there." A smooth voice said, making you jump and rip your eyes open in an instant. The sudden movement made your bag slip from your shoulder, spilling half of the contents on the floor.
"Woah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you…" The man in front of you said as he set his to-go cup down and walked over to you. With a gentle hand he led you to a chair and made you sit down.
The adrenaline decreased slowly and you could finally take a serious look around. You were in an office, it was crowded with books but larger than most dorm rooms. In front of you stood a man who was currently looking down at you worriedly. He was beyond handsome and even though your heart was racing because of utterly different reasons, you couldn't deny that he had that effect on you as well.
"Are you alright?" He asked in a quiet voice, careful to not scare you again.
"Yeah, uhm… sorry." You replied, finally able to think straight again. It was pretty dumb, you realized, having just walked into the first room that had been open.
"It's alright." He gave you a small smile and sat down in the chair opposite to you. "I assume you aren't here for my office hours?"
You shook your head. "No, I'm sorry. I was just looking for my class… But somehow I ended up here in your office."
"I'm Thomas Hiddleston, professor for literature and cultural studies."
"Y/n… Y/n L/n." You smiled back at him. "I'm doing a master's in cultural studies. And one in literature. Double degree..."
His eyes light up ever so slightly upon hearing that and he smiled even more brightly. "What a coincidence. How come we've never met up to this point? The group of students in both degrees is very… limited, unfortunately. And I'm very sure I would've met someone doing a double degree in my fields of study."
"Oh, I just transferred here. It's my first day." You bit your bottom lip, looking into his incredibly blue eyes. How a man such like him could be a college professor was a riddle to you, a miracle even.
"Ah, I see. I'm sure we will see a lot more of each other then!" He rose from his chair and went to pick up your bag from the ground as if it was the most natural thing. With a blush creeping to your face you rushed to his side and dropped on your knees to collect your belongings. "Oh, please don't, I can do that, it's fine."
He took a step back and held his hands up in defeat, laughing lightly. "Just wanted to help."
Still blushing furiously, you pushed everything back into your bag as quickly as you could and got back up. "You're being very nice and I'm… well…"
"Don't worry about it. Everyone has a bad day sometimes." He hooked his thumbs into the pockets of his black jeans and just looked at you with an expression that had you melting into a puddle within seconds.
You nodded slightly, finally remembering how to human. Not looking at him helped greatly, so you found yourself looking at the folded paper in your hands. After a short moment you remembered the circumstances under which you had burst into his office. "Uhm, I'm very sorry for just coming in here, Mr. Hiddleston. I got overwhelmed by the crowds outside and then I couldn't find my class and… you don't even want to hear about that. Sorry."
You turned on your heels and made for the exit as quickly as possible.
"Miss L/n!" He stopped you before you could open the door, making you turn around once again.
"I would like to help you, if you don't mind." His voice was very gentle as he walked towards you, stopping just at arm's length. "Which class are you trying to find?"
You silently handed him the printed schedule you had been clinging onto for dear life and he took it from you, unfolding it. His eyes flew over the page as if he was trying to memorize the whole thing and you couldn't help but watch him.
"You're taking two of my classes!" He said cheerfully and beamed at you. "Tuesday morning and Friday evening."
Your heart skipped a beat at the prospect of seeing him every week. Twice, even. He was being really nice to you, despite being a professor and you still a student; nothing like the professors at your old uni. You appreciated that and sincerely looked forward to seeing him in class.
"Your first class is in this building, that's good news!" He said, coming to stand next to you to show you what he was pointing at on the paper. "It's in the E tower, fourth floor, third corridor."
You frowned involuntarily, giving him a polite but desperately confused smile. "Thank you?"
He bit his bottom lip to suppress his own smile. "You have no idea where that is, right?"
You shake your head, letting out a breathy laugh. "No, not at all."
He gave you back your paper and walked over to his desk, shoving a few items into a leather bag. "I'm going to show you to your room."
You felt the heat returning to your cheeks immediately. "Oh, that's very nice of you, but I'm sure I can just ask my way around. You really don't have to…"
"Nah, it's my pleasure. I have to teach a class in the same tower anyway, it's no big deal." His shoulder brushed yours as he walked past you, sending a pleasant shiver down your spine that you made your heart race again.
He stopped, holding the door open for you. "After you, Miss Y/n."
You smiled and walked out of the office, staring at his backside while he locked the door. The hallway had cleared almost completely and there were very few people still hurrying to get to their classes.
You walked behind Mr. Hiddleston, eyes on the ground. This was embarrassing for so many reasons… first you had stumbled into his office without even knocking, then you had spread the contents of your bag all over his floor and finally you had been too dumb to find your room and now you didn't even dare to walk next to him. That and the fact that he was beyond friendly... and handsome; the most attractive, attentive man you had ever met.
"You don't have to trail behind me like a lost puppy, you know…" He chuckled and turned around to look at you over his shoulder. With more confidence, your steps quickened and you walked next to him.
"What class are you teaching now?" You asked after a while to break the silence that was falling between you. It wasn't any of your business, but the only question you could think of.
"Intro to lit." He sighed, answering as if this chatting between you was a normal occurrence. "It's nice to inspire young people to study literature, but the first classes are always quite exhausting."
"Hmm." You crossed your arms in front of your chest. "What's making it exhausting for you?"
"It's just the freshmen classes mostly… They don't listen, I have to repeat everything a million times and then a million more." He sighed. "But I shouldn't be complaining to you."
"No, it's fine… I mean I don't mind." You said with a shrug. "It's not like I enjoy first day of class either."
"Why not?" He asked in return.
"Same as you, I would say. Most professors don't start with the contents right away, they talk on and on and on about the bureaucracy and explain the assignments a million times because some person wasn't listening." You said as the two of you started climbing the staircase towards the fourth floor.
"What would you suggest to do differently?" He asked, his voice a mix of humor and sincere curiosity.
You thought for a moment, humming quietly. "I mean the outlines have to be covered, but that doesn't mean that the teachers have to keep repeating themselves if the students aren't listening. I always find it helpful to get the syllabus, talk it over real quick and then have five minutes for questions."
He smiled. "Yeah, that would be ideal. It usually doesn't work like that, unfortunately. Questions follow upon questions and some students try to stretch this by asking the most ridiculous things."
"Maybe you could start straight with the first topic and only have fifteen minutes at the end of class reserved for syllabus talk. So you can use most of the class for input and only go over the basics quickly at the end. That way you'll have a limited amount of time for questions and no one leaves before class is over. If the questions are all answered by the end of class you're good, if not you can always offer to answer further questions per email or in office hours." You rambled, not knowing when it had become a good idea to give a professor teaching advice.
"Interesting idea." He mused, pushing his glasses up with a single, slender finger. "I'll have to try that."
Your cheeks were still heated and you nervously played with the zipper of your sweatshirt when you reached the fourth floor. Was he always this nice to his students? If he kept on being so… him, you knew you'd be in serious trouble. But it had only been a few minutes you'd spent alone with him and next time you'd meet in class with a bunch of other people. The thought calmed you down a little and you dropped your arms to your sides.
"So… Advanced German?" He asked with amusement.
"What?" You were a little slow, dragging your thoughts from his person to the class you were walking to. "Oh, the class… yeah."
"How many languages do you speak?" He inquired further, but you didn't mind at all. He was just being polite and making small talk, after all.
"Well, I know English of course, then German, Spanish, and some Korean. I can read Latin, but I guess no one can do more than reading it really… I can also understand a tiny bit Danish and Dutch."
He smiled a little, shaking his head to himself, but didn't comment on it any further. You just took it as an acknowledgement of your answer, for you were sure that he didn't sincerely want to know more about you. A moment later he stopped in front of an open classroom door.
"Here we are." He said calmly and pointed to the open room.
"Thank you, professor." You smiled, looking everywhere but at him, trying not to get lost in his eyes once again. "I really appreciate your help. If there's anything I can help you with in return, please let me know."
"Surely will do. Have a nice day, Miss L/n. I'll see you in class tomorrow." He said with one last polite smile before he walked back into the direction you had just come from, leaving you wondering if his class was really in this part of the building.
As you sauntered into your classroom and sat down towards the front, you reflected on your encounter with the professor. He was extremely friendly, extremely handsome and you'd bet that he was extremely smart as well. Probably every girl in the whole university was crushing on the guy. As understandable that was, you were determined not to drool over him. He was your professor after all and he was probably being nice to every student. So you tried to focus on your class, and on meeting some of the students who all happened to be doing different degrees. Maybe Hiddleston had been right about the size of the degree then… damn it, now you were thinking about him again. Maybe because he was the first and only person you had met? Groaning inwardly, you shoved him to the back of your mind for a while and actually got work done.
It was dark outside when you reached your apartment. You had moved in a week ago and yet, you couldn't imagine a worse place to live. Your roommate was an absolute disaster, he was messy and pushy and had absolutely no sense for personal space. At night, you locked the door to your bedroom because he might just walk in when drunk and lay in your bed with you if he wasn't hindered. So you had maxed out the time you spent at college today; after your two classes, you had spent the afternoon and the evening at the library. It was such a calming place, old and yet modern, filled with more books than you could ever read. There wasn't any work to be done yet and so you had read ahead for professor Hiddleston's classes. Somehow, you felt the need to impress the man, or at least regain the respect you thought you had lost this morning. So you had picked up a few books and read through some of them already. The others you had taken home.
You dug through your bag in search of your keychain, frowning deeply. The damn things was not to be found, even after emptying your whole bag on the sidewalk. For a second you closed your eyes and prayed that you had only forgotten them in your room. But for now, all you could do was knock. To your not-really-surprise, a strange man with weird tattoos opened up and let you in without question. This was a regular thing now, strange men basically living in your apartment and calling themselves visitors of your roommate.
Once you were in the small space of your bedroom and hadn't found your keys, you remembered that you hadn't eaten at all today, so you made your way to the kitchen only to find that your foods were gone. Great…
With a sigh you returned to your room only with a bottle of wine you'd kept hidden in a box of board games. After you'd locked the door, you opened the bottle and went to read on your bed in your PJs. But somehow the words wouldn't stick in your brain at all. At about midnight you gave up, put the book back on your desk and laid down in the vain attempt to sleep. However your roommate seemed to have different plans, as sounds of demolition and various voices shouting echoed through the whole apartment.
Groaning, you just stared into the darkness around you until finally your body gave in and you fell into a restless sleep.
______________
Tom sat at the desk in his office at uni, his elbows on the tabletop and his head in his hands. For hours he'd been trying to finish preparing his classes for the following day and he just couldn't concentrate. When he'd come to work this morning, he had expected another normal first day of class. He had gotten some coffee, over at his favorite coffee shop close to campus, and then walked to his office together with his colleague and friend Benedict. Just when he had finally sat down to prepare for the first class he was giving, his door had been ripped open and you had entered his office. And thereby also his life.
At first he hadn't thought too much about it, but as the minutes spent with you passed, he had felt drawn to you in a way he couldn't really put his finger to. While the rational part of his mind had told him you were just another student, he couldn't help but treat you… differently. Sure, he was always being nice to his students, but as he had walked you to your class he had felt the dire need to be around you for longer. To befriend you, maybe, he had thought. He knew it was wrong and after he had left you to your class, he had promised himself that from that moment on, he would treat you like every other student.
The only problem was that throughout the whole day, his thoughts had returned to you whenever he had tried to focus on something else. So after his classes, when the time to prepare for tomorrow had come, he found himself thinking about your suggestion. Maybe he should indeed start the class with content and leave the formalities for the end.
That's where he was at now, with his head in his hands, thinking about the class. He couldn't just ignore you, that wouldn't be fair to anyone. So maybe he would just have to put on a facade and hope that the wicked games his mind was playing with him would stop soon.
Sighing he got up and tiredly grabbed his bag to head out, knocking over a cup of pens in the process. With an exaggerated rolling of his eyes he knelt down and collected the pens that had flown everywhere. As he reached under the cupboard, his fingers didn't touch a pen, as he would've expected, but instead a small piece of metal. Then another, and another. With a frown he pulled the whole thing into the light, finding a ring with several keys attached to it, along with a small piece of metal saying 'And having thee, of all men's pride I boast'.
The smile came upon his lips before he could stop himself and he sat on the ground for a moment, just staring at the keys in his hand. You must've lost them here when you had dropped your bag earlier and missed them in your haste. He hadn't meant to make you uncomfortable by his attempt to help you… it was the polite thing to do but he assumed that it wasn't really the most professional. He quickly collected the remaining pens and then made his way to the door, putting your keys in his bag. Hopefully you had gotten into your home, somehow… he'd hate if something happened to you because of your little incident this morning.
He would return the keys tomorrow in class, apologize once more for his behavior today and then return to a more professional behavior.
However as he lay in bed that night, restless and frustrated with himself, he wasn't so sure anymore that he would be able to stay away from you after all.

Thanks to a friend I got my grubby little hands on a copy of the new New Mutants first issue first thing this morning, and I mostly really liked it? Maybe the most out of all the new Dawn of X titles so far?
Spoilers below:
The Bad:
Really really really painful clunky wow this is bad stilted exposition between Dani and Berto to catch new readers up to speed, like Previously on As The X Turns or whatever.
The Good:
Almost everything else? I know, I was surprised too.
But the characterizations were on point, Chamber and Mondo being tossed in with the rest of the classic New Mutants gang is kinda random but it works, I think.
The shout out to Synch and Monet being elsewhere doing stuff was nice, like, I would’ve loved seeing them too but its not really their book and I’m still riding the high of Ev just being alive again at all.
The New Mutants gang all living communally together in one big house on Krakoa IS MY EVERYTHING AND LITERALLY ALL I’VE EVER WANTED FOR THESE CRAZY KIDS I THINK IM GONNA CRY JUST THINKING ABOUT IT WTF. Like as many troubling implications as Dawn of X and Krakoa as a whole have, at least until I figure out how many of them are meant to be there as plot points and how many are just things that weren’t considered or else weren’t considered problems.....like, if Hickman keeps tossing out little gems like this, I am weak and I just. Its such a little thing but its SO GOOD.
Illyana being obsessed with the new Krakoan strain of coffee and willing to cut you if you try and touch her coffee is my new favorite trope.
Just Illyana in general. God, when she’s written like this, she’s one of my all time faves. Her replying to being called a demon girl with stuff like “lol its cute you think thats an insult” and her sparring match with Raza is just...gold.
Berto was my runner up fave in the issue. God, the classic Berto characterization, like this is him at his quintessential best. The casual arrogance but delivered with enough charm that its like oh Berto, instead of ugh, Berto....the assumption that he’s the one in charge in Sam’s absence, yet not even slightly offended when its later basically established that the others are just humoring him because none of them really want the job, and the second he makes an ‘executive decision’ they don’t agree with, they just go and do their own thing anyway, and Berto’s like....yeah, that tracks. Oh well.
Doug is the most interesting he’s been in...since like, ever, pretty much. And that’s even with the fact that I’ve always kinda liked him anyway.
The classic New Mutants style adventure. Like, this is the kinda thing they DID as kids, and that was like....what made them them. The X-Men are all about saving the world....the New Mutants were just a bunch of weird outcast mutant kids who were friends who never would have been friends if not for the mutant thing bringing them all together....and them just hanging out and stumbling into hijinks that turn into the most random adventures as just...them living their lives.
So to see them basically get involved in an epic space adventure that really just organically results from them being like, y’know what we’re missing? Sam. This place is awesome but its not perfect as long as he’s not here, and he’s off in Shi’ar space living with his new wife and kid, so obviously, the logical course of action is to go into space, bum a ride from Cyclops’ pirate dad, and then wind up arrested for crimes against the Space Empire because like...pirates, man. Effin space pirates.
Also, its nice to see them continuing with the whole thing where Sam totally got together and had a kid with one of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard. Like, every appearance of him since Hickman’s Avengers run basically acted like that never happened, and I didn’t read his Avengers run because eww, Avengers, I can’t do that even for Sam and Berto and I LOVE THEM, like. There are limits to even my ability to stan and thus stomach Unfortunate Canon Things. So I’ve literally never read a comic with Smasher, Sam’s new....girlfriend? Wife? Idk their relationship status. And I’m not at all invested in their relationship but I AM always a fan for any and all chances for X-characters to be allowed to have new relationships and GROW instead of cycling through the same half a dozen dynamics they’ve been stuck in for twenty plus years.
So, I mean, I know that literally the only thing keeping Sam plus Smasher plus their new baby a thing is the fact that Hickman’s writing this title personally and of course he wanted to return to the plot point he established with Sam even if nobody since him has wanted to touch on it, but I’m not mad about it, and like. X-Men having kids is a THING with me, and Sam is A+ Daddy material and omg if you make that into a kink joke I will hurt you, YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I MEANT lmfao.
But srsly, the team being all ‘brb, we’re just going to a galaxy far far away to bug our BFF into coming back to live on Fantasy Island with us in our big communal dome house thingie’.....it honestly couldn’t feel any more classic New Mutants but still with them all grown up, like, even if I tried to come up with a more fundamentally THEM plot with all my might.
Also, never hurts to be reminded that even though Corsair is Scott’s dad, like....the dude is kinda a douche and always has been, and his characterization here is absolutely valid. Fuck that dude.
Last but not least:
The Bad but purely in an objective way that like, its not bad writing, its just I Don’t Like It, Fuck You:
As much as I’m happy to see Sam’s latest relationship status upheld and continued to be built upon, the Sam/Bobby shipper in me can’t help but be all awww, sad feels. Which Sam/Bobby, you ask? Drake or DaCosta? Either. Both. Whichever. I’m not picky!
I maintain there was room for Ev and Monet to be squeezed in there somehow if Hickman like, really TRIED, gosh darnit. And it IS a little weird to me that if he was going to mash together some members of the Gen X lineup with the classic New Mutants for this particular adventure....umm, where’s Paige? Did nobody think hey wonder if our Gen X teammate and friend Paige Guthrie wants to come with us to go see her brother and new nephew? I mean, I guess maybe she’s busy hanging out with her presumably newly resurrected little brother Jay, but given the story context, that could’ve used a mention somewhere. That’s just my personal nitpick though.
Too much focus on Rahne. With full awareness that it was only like, one scene of focus, a few pages at most, but any focus on Rahne is too much focus for me, sorry not sorry. Turns out I still hate her and like, look, I know its not actually her FAULT given that she’s a fictional character that didn’t write the story that made me hate her, but its a Thing and I think at this point I can safely say her character is ruined for me forever and I’m like....Magma should be around somewhere too, what if you just like....quietly air-lifted Rahne out of this story and dropped Amara in instead, like, INSTANT IMPROVEMENT, try it, you’ll see! I am not biased, this is totally impartial criticism!

Tag Game
Answer 15 questions and tag 15 mutuals
Thank you to @feyna-v for tagging me!
1. Are you named after someone? No, my mom picked my name just because she liked it and it was American/English and not Polish (she didn’t want to give me a Polish name).  My dad agreed to it. (My name is not Mandelene, btw).
2. When was the last time you cried? While reading the ending of Small Country by Gael Faye a few days ago.
3. Do you have kids? Nope, not yet, haha, but I hope to have kids someday if I can. Two or three but no more than three :) Idk how to explain it, but at some point within the past two years, I started feeling more...maternal toward kids, if that’s the right word for it. I just see kids on the bus and think, huh, yeah, I could have one of those, I think I might like that, God knows why.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Oh, boy. Yes. It’s not as obvious when I’m online, but ask my mother or my close friends and they will confirm that 90% of my daily life is spent being sarcastic. My life is just one big sarcastic meme.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? How they present themselves -- whether they’re smiling or frowning, standing up straight or slouching, etc. For men, I immediately notice how tall they are because I’m a tall woman so tall men are absolutely heavenly to look at. Any man that’s like 6′2 ft or taller and in their mid to late twenties makes my heart flutter instinctively. (This is how I know I’m definitely straight, bahahaha).
6. What’s your eye color?
Hazel. I joke that I must be adopted because my parents and sister have green eyes, but my great-grandmother had hazel eyes so I guess my parents are my parents.
7. Scary movie or happy ending? Happy ending for sure. Scary movies rarely have a storyline that I find interesting tbh.
8. Any special talents? I’ve been told I bake a fantastic coffee cake. I can recite the alphabet backwards, and I know some first-aid, but those are skills and not really talents.
9. Where were you born? I’m a Brooklyn baby. :D Brooklyn, NY.
10. What are your hobbies? Writing, reading, occasional video-making, playing with my cat, indoor cycler, casual gamer, novice yoga pupil.
11. Have you any pets? Of course. Most of you know my baby already:
Macchiato!
Tumblr media
12. What sports do you play/have you played?
Oh, here we go. Brace yourselves for a tangent.
I was the sickly asthmatic kid who was too busy coughing up a lung to play sports, and I’m only half-joking. I played soccer a lot as a kid with my friends, but I was never on a team because my asthma was too severe and out of control for that. I’ve talked about this many times before, but I spent a good chunk of my childhood in the doctor’s office. I missed a lot of school. I got poked and prodded. I cried often about how much I hated being sick. I would be out playing with my friends and have an asthma attack in front of them and feel embarrassed. I would start wheezing and ignore it because I didn’t want everyone to make a big deal out of it. Don’t ever ignore your asthma, please. That never ends well. Sports were something I feared for years.
Midway through high school, my relationship with sports changed completely. I started seeing them as a method to improve my asthma rather than worsen it. My pulmonologist got my asthma under better control by coming up with a treatment regiment that he made sure I stuck to by lecturing my teenaged self at great length and wrote notes to my gym teachers at the start of every marking period. I slowly started regaining my confidence. My doctor made it clear that he was not excusing me from gym completely -- I had to exercise to the best of my ability without making myself sick, and if I kept getting attacks, it was back to the drawing board. If I couldn’t manage to exercise normally, then, in his view, my asthma was impeding my life too much and my medicine wasn’t working for me, which was totally true.
One of my high school gym teachers, Mr. B, was notorious for being the hardest P.E. teacher in the school. I was terrified of him. Whenever he made us run laps, I would pause when I started feeling unwell, rest for a minute, and then continue. He never said a word to me about it even though he was known for scolding students for stopping. Oddly enough, it took me a while to realize this, but he was always subtlely looking out for me. He always asked me if I had my inhaler with me at the start of class. Although I was often dead last in everything he made us do, he pretended not to notice and never commented on it. I never cheated him. If he said to do 30 laps, I would do 30 laps, even if I had to pause three times in between. Everyone else would have already moved on to other exercises while I was still doing my laps, lol, but I don’t think I ever had to reach for my inhaler. At the end of the term, he pulled me aside and told me, “I know you always tried your best, and I admire that.” He gave me an A. He was the only gym teacher I had who didn’t accuse me of making excuses or being lazy. Many previous teachers had convinced me I wasn’t trying hard enough, so I would push myself, and then I promptly proceeded to have attacks, be frustrated with myself, and end up in tears in the locker room. I needed Mr. B in my life to restore my faith in gym.
Nowadays I indoor cycle 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour to strengthen my lungs. Once a week, I have my “long tour” which is when I cycle for an hour and thirty minutes. After cycling, I lift weights for another 15-20 minutes. If I have a cold or any other upper respiratory infection, I stop all exercise until I’m well, and I hold myself to this. I have a better idea of my limits and what sports are best for me. I love swimming, but unfortunately, I don’t have a good indoor swimming pool around me, so it’s not something I can do regularly. Running/Track is still something I really struggle with, but brisk walking or hiking is fine. Last year, I was really into dance classes with my friend. Cycling is super kind to my lungs but leaves me exhausted in a good way, so that’s why it’s my favorite form of exercise. I’m sure if I did it outside though, I’d have asthma attacks. I’m generally okay with all sports/exercise as long as it doesn’t involve long stretches of running with few breaks in between, and I don’t do it outside when it’s cold. I won’t die from a light jog unless it’s the middle of January and there’s a meter of snow on the ground. You can invite me to play volleyball/basketball/tennis/whatever, and I promise I’ll be fine, haha.
I’ve also tried getting into yoga recently by following some YouTube instructors, but cycling is what I do most regularly and have stuck to. I take frequent exercise very seriously now, and I make it a priority.
13. How tall are you?
5′10 ft, so 177.8 cm. Super tall, I know. You should see my legs in yoga pants ;)
14. Favorite subject in school? In elementary school, I enjoyed English classes the most. In high school, AP comparative government in my senior year was my favorite because I love international politics. Then, there came a point in my life when I stopped liking English classes and started despising them (around my second year of university). College English consists of reading novels (which is a good start) and then writing unnecessarily long papers analyzing the novel, but if the professor doesn’t like your interpretation or analysis, they’ll deduct points. They’re not the classes you want to take if you want to actually learn how to be a better writer. They just teach you how to pander to the professor and not how to think for yourself. It’s annoying. Journalism classes get right down to the technical parts of writing and tear your sentences apart. I feel like I gain more from those classes than ones in which I have to write a ten-page essay on the symbolism of a key.
15. Dream job? A few years ago, I would have said “reporter for the New York Times,” and while that would be incredible, I have multiple dream jobs now.
I would still love to work at a media outlet. I’d want to either work at the international desk as a writer/reporter or work on digital content like podcasts or short documentaries. However, I can also picture myself working at an NGO or at a think tank. I might also be interested in doing something in government someday--anything that has a direct impact on getting involved in a community. Global politics and writing are my two biggest passions, so if I end up doing work in either of those areas, I’ll be happy.
Ideally, I can continue writing fiction on the side and publish it someday, but that’s still a dream I have to work my way up to.
I don’t want to leave anybody out, so if you’re reading this and you want to answer it, consider yourself tagged by me! :)

The Garfstream
So, I’ve spent the past couple of days working, drawing up different ideas, and testing different streaming services on different platforms. While it’s not perfect, I feel like we are in a good enough place to at least pitch ideas for the type of content you guys would like to see and give just a general update to the stream.
From now on, the stream will be called the Garfstream. and I will try and stream as much Garfield related stuff as I can. If I end up streaming anything that isn't in any way Garfield related just for fun or boredom, I will title the post Nongarfstream. They will also be tagged as such, for easier access.
I want to try and stream AT LEAST 1-2 times a week, but considering my erratic retail work schedule and general lifestyle, this could be more on some weeks and less on others. This also means I can’t really put down a schedule for what specific days I’ll stream. If I end up settling into a basic routine, I’ll update with an official schedule for the stream.
Now, on to the stream ideas.I feel as if I should iterate that none of these ideas are concrete, as I might not have what it takes in regards to equipment and such to make all of these happen. Regardless, I am still gonna list all of the ideas I’ve gotten, as I would genuinely like to do most of these. I will specify any qualms that I have with this stream type in the description of them.
Well anyway, on to the actual ideas, I have created a Strawpoll for easy management of what you guys want to see. The Strawpoll is here, as well as in a few different areas along the post for convenience. Please choose whatever you want to see on the straw poll. Choose as many things as you want, you're not limited to one. If you like them all, then click them all! I also have a “I’m fine with all of it” option if you’re lazy! I want to do most, if not all of these at some point, but if it doesn’t have a lot of votes with you guys, it will negatively impact when I do it, or if I even do it. So please vote!
>>Strawpoll is here<<
A list of all of the activities, complete with descriptions after the break! Please Read Them!
Garf Shows/Movies
The Garfield Show (continued) [Not possible yet]
Now, unfortunately I do not have any means of doing this yet, but if I ever found a way to, I would really like to do this.
Garfield and Friends
It appears that it is on Hulu. Now I don’t own Hulu and don’t necessarily like Hulu, but I’d be willing to get a subscription in order to stream this. Also interestingly enough I found a YouTube channel for it, but I think it’s just for compilations and mini episodes. If anyone can confirm I’ll post the channel page once I return
The Live Action Garfield Movies
I have no clue how I would stream these, but I would be freaking stoked to stream these somehow.
Art
Doodle Streams with Tumblr and Friends
I would love to stream my artist friends and I doodling absurdist, surreal and generally bizarre Garfield drawings. You viewers at home can submit prompts for us to draw, and even join us in prompts and send in your artwork to us!
Now I only have a little $99 wacom art tablet with no screen, so my art quality significantly diminishes in comparison to my works on paper. So expect more rough, gestural dumb doodles than absolute masterpieces. I figured this would be a good way for me to get generally more acclimated to my tablet, and have fun with friends along the way. Also we might occasionally deviate from Garfield if we get bored or if the prompts lead us away from it.
Garf and not so Garf Games
Garfield Kart [Currently a Terrible Experience]
I sampled streaming this, and not only do I suck really hard at it and consistently land myself in last place, with the stream on, the stream runs at like 3fps, while my pc runs at like 20-25fps. Basically it was a terrible experience for everyone involved and I would only do this if I had some practice with it and got a better PC
Garfield GO [Might be impossible, I don’t know yet]
Unsure if I could stream it or how good it would be, but it is most certainly an option. Haven’t looked too into this.
Garfield Flash Games on Garfield.com
I just noticed that they have a lot of Garfield flash games on Garfield.com, and I wanna play them and see how weird they are
—Not So Garf Section----
Fighting off the Mondays with the Anti-Mondays Task Force (Battlefield 1)
A Monday stream where we assemble the Anti-Mondays Task Force platoon on PS4 to play with us and stave off the Mondays. This goes for both my friends and anyone who joins the PS4 platoon and wants to play with us. Sorry PC players, I’m a console pleb with no money to upgrade my toaster PC.
Dark Souls 3 Garf Run
A run through Dark Souls with a character from the Garfield Universe, and try to make as many Garfield references as possible, whilst dying as little as possible. Disclaimer, I suck really hard at dark souls and will likely die very frequently and make really shitty plays, so if you are a ds3 god, please don’t watch cause you will probably cringe yourself into a singularity.
Until Dawn, but with Garfield
A run through Until Dawn, but we set characters as different characters from the Garfield franchise, and see who gets killed off and what happens to them. Now, i have never played until dawn and therefore don’t know what happens so I feel like this could be really dumb and fun!
Undertale Genocide run as Jon Arbuckle
*Suggested by@thegreatestegg*
A genocide run through Undertale, but as Jon Arbuckle. Now I’m going to go right out and say it. I never had much interest in Undertale. I can appreciate it for what it is, but I’m not crazy about it personally. Sorry if you like it, I don’t. However, this is a pretty great idea and if I can snag undertale on sale and it’s popular amongst you guys, I will be willing to swallow my pride and play it for the first time. Warning, I will probably suck.
Non Garf
Other dumb shows and movies from other franchises (Mario Super show, Sonic Cartoons, Gaming Show IMPG, Air Bud, etc.)
*Partially Suggested by@thegreatestegg*
I watch other shows and movies that aren’t Garfield, but equally fun to poke fun of.
Non Garf Games
I can pretty much stream most of the games on my PS4 and some on stream, so I might stream something random when I’m bored and not in a Garf mood. I will list just some of the games I have down here
PS4: Battlefield 4 & Hardline, Guitar Hero Live, Killing Floor 2, Overwatch, Prey, Resident Evil’s 0,1,4,5,7, Code Veronica, and begrudgingly Umbrella Corps, The Evil Within, Uncharted’s 1-4, DMC, Soma, most games that came out free since like last year, and probably a few others that i’m forgetting.
PC: A Fuckton but idk how they will work out on stream. some of my favorites include Left 4 Dead 2, Terraria, Cry of Fear, Half Life, Half Life 2, etc.
>>Strawpoll is here<<
Yep that’s pretty much it. If you have any suggestions for what I should stream, let me know with a comment below this and of its feasible I’ll add it up and credit you! So Please Vote! Thank you!

hi everyone im lina !! im fifteen n i live in the cst timezone so im usually on around this time of night !!! also my pronouns are she/her ! im super excited to be rping w yall ??? u should all hmu bc i wanna be friends w all of you.
DYLAN SPRAYBERRY - Did you hear MATTHEW MARTELLI joined the drama club now? Yeah, apparently they’re a SIXTEEN year old JUNIOR at Washington High. I heard they’re playing KURT KELLY in HEATHERS. Let’s hope they don’t fuck that up. I’ve seen HIM before in the FOOTBALL PLAYER table at lunch. At that table, they’re known as the GOLDEN BOY, because they’re +PERSPICACIOUS, but also -POLLYANNAISH. I wish them good luck with their slushy facial, though.
Tumblr media
theres a stats page here and i’ll make a plots page but i already have two of them here !!!! message me to plot or like this and i’ll come to you once i get over my whole shyness thing
matt was born matthew alexander hemingway-martelli on august 29th, 2000 ( he's the youngest junior in the school heh ), but his family no longer say their father’s surname ( hemingway ) in order to honor their mother after their death. now they all just go by martelli, though they are still legally hemingway-martelli.
he was born in manhattan, ny into an upper class family but moved to rivercreek when he was three, the town his parents met and grew up in.
when he was in his mothers womb, matt got sick. this left him with fine hearing in his right ear, but very very limited hearing in his left ( he can really only hear loud noises really close to his ear, and everything sounds mumbled and blurred. therefore, hes fluent in asl and learned it alongside english growing up. he uses a cros system at the moment but is always afraid he’ll be bullied bc of it so he keeps it hidden and only those close to him knows he even hard of hearing. u dont wanna know how many times hes had to lie and say he was attracted to someone who caught him staring at their lips ( aka reading )
his family has five members. he has his dad william, his mother olivia, his older brother maxwell (21), and his older sister ________ [to be added by another rper] (17-18). hes the youngest of them all and his siblings never miss a chance to tease him about it.
his mom was a surgeon, and matt never really liked going to work w her bc when she was at the hospital she was always so serious yet at home she was the most fun person ever ?? she always encouraged him to be healthy and do well in school and was basically his biggest role model. when he was thirteen, she died after being hit by a drunk driver, leading matt to make a vow never to drink or do drugs. ever.
the entire family was devastated by the loss of their mother. thank goodness they turned to each other instead of bad coping mechanisms like drinking or drugs, and ultimately it made their family bond even stronger.
his father was/is a very successful businessman, and used to be very very involved in his large chain of pizzerias that were nationwide, but its hq was in manhattan. when he had kids, he started to focus more on family and when matt was three, he decided to step back a bit and do most of his work from home in order to take care of the kids bc their mother was v busy. hes also a rlly good chef ( hence the pizzerias ) and they often have family dinners around the table ( in fact, when their dad is home its mandatory every night theyre free ). now that the kids are old enough to take care of themselves, hes started to go back to nyc and get back in the swing of things. for the past two years, it isnt uncommon for him to spend a few days there every few weeks.
matt is the kind of person youd call a ‘gifted child.’ ever since he was a kid, hes always been that kind of cookie cutter kid pulled out a 40s comic strip - the all american boy next door whos nice to everyone and good at sports and has a 4.0 gpa thats friends w everybody ( yall know what character im talking about ) - but having that burden placed on him at such a young age has begun to stress him out big time
his after school activities include various volunteer stuff, football, track and field, gymnastics, peer tutoring, national honor society, and now theater. he also is taking seven classes ( not including pe ) - four honors and three aps
when matt grows up he really wants to be an engineer but also wants to follow in the footsteps of his mother, so hes torn between becoming a surgeon or a biomed engineer.
hes lowkey obsessed with maintaining his perfect image. he spends hours upon hours studying each night, works out and practices football and gymnastics almost every day, and on top of that, now he has this freaking musical to top it off ! ( yes, that says freaking. he doesnt swear. )
speaking of the musical, lets just say matt is not pleased. his sister encouraged it based on how much matt enjoyed choir when he was in junior high ( which unfortunately he had no time in his schedule to continue ) and urged him to audition and play a member of the ensemble as a time to destress at the end of the day and do something fun. but no, they just had to give his kurt kelly. while its not a leading role, its still enough that now hes stressing about lines and his singing and dancing and not knowing if what hes doing is realistic because hes never been drunk or a douche how is he supposed to know?!?! i mean he still enjoys it tho but its just kinda like the icing on top of the cake
idk. i’ll update this but plot w me for now !!! yeet
also im not gonna be able to be on or opening tomorrow bc i have rehearsal for my play til 7pm cst so whoops
