For the prompt, what about unrequited wincest, pining Dean doing his secret pining for years and years, until Michael takes him for a ride and gets intrigued by Dean's overwhelming feelings for his brother? Sam loves his brother, but not in that way. Please feel free to ignore this prompt if you don't like it or if you're not into it.

He was never going to give the vessel back. It is his, made for him (or the other him, but that him is safely locked away and he has no desire to seek himself out) and the human soul that let him in is of no interest to him.

Except...

Except when he looks at the vessel that should have been his brother. The vessel called Sam.

That vessel is beautiful - it should be, it was made for Lucifer, and Lucifer was the most beautiful of all the angels. And when he looks at it, his vessel responds. A quickening heartbeat, a hitch in the breath, and the human soul struggles and cries out, yearning towards what should have been Lucifer.

The feeling is odd. Unsettling. A danger, he decides, so he takes himself away from that other vessel while the soul called Dean curses impotently in their shared head. It settles with distance.

His brother's vessel, his vessel's brother, and something else. A threat, Michael decides. The Sam vessel is a threat. It gives strength to the Dean soul in a way he does not quite understand. He needs to understand.

So he lets the Dean soul take control - not completely, not enough to take the vessel back, but enough that the soul can believe it did. He hides in the back of its mind, watches through its eyes as it goes back to its home. Its brother.

Its love.

He knew there was love there, of course. Dean never would have given him that crucial "yes" without love. And Michael understands love. He loved his brother before the rebellion and he loved his Father before the abandonment. But the love he's known pales beside what his vessel feels for its brother.

There's love that he can recognize, of course. A brother's love is something he knows. It's a stronger love, and looking through his vessel's memories he can see that it's been tested but never broken, not even when the Sam vessel rebelled against their father and he doesn't understand that. There's pain, too, whenever the Sam vessel gives attention to any of the other humans that share their home. A twisting in the gut, and looking though his vessel's memories show that same twisting many times in the past.

The twisting pain when the Sam vessel took a waitress in the backseat of their car, the twisting pain when the Sam vessel had a woman named Amelia, the twisting pain that led to his vessel killing a kitsune, the twisting pain when the Sam vessel took a demon for a lover, the twisting pain of finding him settled with a woman named Jess. The same twisting pain every time the Sam vessel looked towards anyone but Dean, and as Michael delves deeper he starts to recognize that twisting pain as jealousy.

He finds another pain, too. An aching pain in the chest in random memories, often combined with a swelling in his vessel's penis, when he looks at the Sam vessel. Michael understands that, too, though he has never experienced lust himself. But, like Dean, he can see the beauty of Lucifer's vessel. And the aching pain of not being allowed to touch, to satiate that lust in the flesh that inspired it...

Michael is just starting to understand that pain, and his vessel has been feeling it almost all its life.

The Sam vessel removes the excessive hair growth from its cheeks and chin, and Michael and Dean are sore tempted to stroke the newly smooth skin.

we could make him ours he offers, and his vessel's instant rejection almost expels him, firm in the knowledge that Sam loves Dean but would never, could never, love him the way he dreams of, and Michael is forced to wipe away the offer from his vessel's mind.

an excerpt from "road music" - richard siken

dean has spent his whole life waiting for the love that he continually, habitually, involuntarily extends to be truly requited; waiting for his love to be truly returned to its fullest extent. it hasn't happened, he knows this. he'll never admit it.

first, he waited on john, the man he devoted his whole life to from the tender age of four. his drill sergeant, his field commander, his father. dean spent years waiting for him, this man who is so many different things to him, to notice his wanton devotion.

then, as he grew older, dean waited on Sam. his Sammy, his baby (-brother, his baby brother, because Sam isn't his baby, not really, though the admission leaves a bitter taste in his mouth). his Sam. his to cherish, his to love and hold and care for. dean waits and waits for Sam to grow up and return this overwhelming affection that has consumed him whole.

he thinks it might actually be happening for a while. during those blissful years where nothing pleases Sam more than hanging out with his big brother, no matter what they end up doing. as long as they're together, Sam's happy. dean didn't know life could be like this- happy, content. not constantly chasing after something he can't define.

but then dean drops out of school to focus on hunting, at their dad's behest (will you notice me now, daddy? please, daddy, please-). he drops out, and Sam - inexplicably, without reason or cause (not any that dean can see, anyway) - he drifts away. he starts fights with dean & john constantly now; yelling or throwing fists or fuming in silent mutiny more often than not, these days. the resulting disapproval from john, not just of Sam but also of dean, is crushing. despite dean's own bewilderment, john blames him for Sam's misbehavior. says that he should have better control of his little brother (his brother-son, his best friend, his confidant, his lov-), nevermind that Sam is john's son, too.

the two most important - the two only - people in his life, at odds with each other, and subsequently at odds with him. upset, with him. their affection, love, devotion, care- all gone; it was his fault, somehow. 

dean didn't think it was possible to physically feel your heart break into pieces. he was wrong.

the night Sammy leaves for stanford, dean swears he feels his heart disintegrate entirely. it turns to ash inside his ribs with a burning ache that leaves him clutching with both hands at the spot it used to reside in, vomiting the remnants into the grass on the side of the road after Sam's bus pulls away. it leaves a niche in his chest where a heart would fit perfectly

and he thinks if he could just maneuver one (anyone's- john's- Sam's) into place---

It's funny that Castiel had plenty of opportunities to "get" Dean when his relationship with Sam was seriously damaged - the s5 breakup for one, Cas could've used that to his advantage, or the s9 breakup Cas could've swooped in and hold on tight and maybe carve himself deeper into Deans heart or maybe even s6 when everything was so messed up with Sam's soul and Dean was hanging loose there for a while but. Cas is always passive in that regard, always letting Dean lead instead of leading Dean himself. And that's where Crowley comes in, sees the gap there is between Sam and Dean and masterfully constructs a plan to try to keep Dean for himself - and the thing is he succeeds at that, for a while. He makes a space for himself somewhere inside Dean (pun intended) and even if that doesn't last it still does in a way because Dean may never love him but he may never kill him or even hate him either and there remains just enough room for Crowley to hang on to and feed from that and nourish his twisted soul. If it ends up killing him then well. He played and lost and won and that's about it in this game isn't it.

I know it's the brainworms talking but prev reblog made me want to write a fic about kisses Dean has stolen over the years.

(y'know that ao3 tag that goes something like "Dean Winchester is obsessed with Sam Winchester"? Yeah, like that)

It would start cute like the forehead kiss to baby Sammy in the opening scene of the pilot, a goodbye just for the night, a promise of protection (turned, we know, fast to ash).

Flash forward fast to disturbing territory of Sam blackout drunk as a teen and Dean dropping him in bed, dodging all Sam's octopus limbs trying to attach themselves to dean until he's just - out. And maybe Dean doesn't go for the kiss this time, or maybe he does, but either way he stares at Sam's lips an unsettling length of time, and the scene bleeds into Playthings and there is this distinct undercurrent of 'how often has this exact same thing played out this way over the years'.

We move from there to AHBL and Dean kissing Sam's corpse as if in goodbye, as if seeking atonement, as if that alone could revive it (sense memory still on his lips when he makes his demon deal).

After Sam's wall breaks, comatose, and Balthazar's joke to Dean about not stealing any kisses while he stands vigil over Sam's sleeping form uncomfortably apt, and Dean knows the angels know too much but could he at least keep his goddamn trap shut in front of Bobby, who's looking stiff and away and it figures. It figures he knows too. Figures the whole goddamn world does. (But not Sam, not Sam who is never conscious for these transgressions, these offerings.)

During the trials when Sam is fevered and ill and dips in and out of consciousness, and Dean feeds him and wraps him in blankets and while Sam shakes out the fever, Dean is wrapped around him, presses kisses to Sam's hairline, his forehead, his temples, chin (lips) catching on the grain of stubble dusting Sam's cheeks, thumb grazing his lips until Sam, unconscious and open, sucks it in like a pacifier, like an infant once again.

And maybe if we are going for a 5+1 format, 5 kisses Sam was unaware of and 1 he was let in on, we twist the knife in just a bit?

Possession, we know, involves an open mouth. And how Gadreel entered Sam with Dean's help is a little speculative. If Dean, holding hands with Gadreel, pressed his lips to Sam's mouth and pried it open, stayed there the duration of the trickery he pulled with Gadreel in Sam's brain, so that Gadreel could flow through Dean like a conduit into Sam's open mouth... One wonders if it would be Gadreel or Crowley who would rustle up the image in Sam's mind for him, the strangely familiar sensation of Dean's lips on his.

Of course we could also reject the 5+1 format or subvert it with a happier follow-up, as if two distinct +1s?

Or we could do short snippets of post!finding out Sam (make a whole different 5+1 sequel? 5 kisses Sam let Dean steal, and one that he stole himself?)

We could frame an awake, eyes wide open kiss with demon!Dean that's filthier than all the rest, tongue and suction and bodies pressed firm to each other, Sam's back to a wall, the perfect opportunity to jab Dean with a needle or to get the cuffs on him but only if he's adequately distracted.

After the bmol, after they save Sam, before he's washed, Dean following him to the showers, restless and desperate to touch, to confirm the solidness of Sam's skin away from their mother's prying eyes, but Sam's awake and Dean's never -- never had permission, never stolen one like this, not except as a demon, and between that and Gadreel... But Sam doesn't argue when Dean helps him to the showers, lets Dean help him pry his shirt off when he hisses at the movement and how it strain his limbs, his belt, his jeans, doesn't argue when Dean helps him into the shower itself while maintaining a quiet freeflow ramble about Sam's back needing someone to wash it and not falling over on his still-sore foot and giving himself a concussion. Devolves into Dean kissing Sam's shoulders and hugging him, Sam twisting eventually to look at him, quiet promise of "it's okay" and then Dean takes what he needs and sets his lips on Sam's.

From there, a quiet, not-quite-stolen one of comfort after Sam marches into camp in Apocalypse world with Lucifer behind him, away from the others and Sam melting into the now-familiar, now-comforting sensation.

Dean pulling Sam in after Michael's possession to ground himself, shirtless in his room, out of place in his own skin. His hands on Sam's jaw, his head, more demanding and less feather-light than most times before. Sam's fingers delicately finding a place along Dean's waist, the warm skin there, finding a sense of comfort in feeling how solid Dean is, a sense of fresh understanding as he slides his hands up Dean's back. Dean telling him the beard has to go after he pulls back.

Then after Nick brains Sam and he's dying or dead on the pavement for a moment before he's healed, who cares who sees, this is understood between them, this helps place their jagged pieces together in ways he's not apologizing for anymore - Sam waking up breathing in the air from Dean's lungs on a gasp, lips tingling, mouth opening under Dean to accept him before he even has oxygen in his blood.

The +1 here is either the barn scene (if we're masochistic) or more likely in heaven on the bridge, both of them seeking it together at the same moment, a kiss that means the same as all the last -- I'm here, I'm not letting you go -- but this time untinged by pain or separation, finally together forever, safe.

there’s something about wincest in the pre-slash era (whenever that is) where i think the dynamic is: one of them does not have sex with men. doesn’t think of them that way, because it feels too dangerous, too easy to slip into those fantasies he keeps locked away. and the other one fucks guys, but only ones who are eerily similar, carbon copies to his brother. the type of resemblance that would turn most siblings off. and the roles could go either way, for either of them. just… the dynamics of the different types of desperate “unrequited” feelings and the way they try to get away from them.

like. dean getting drunk and making out with some tall, long haired guy at a bar. nasty desperate hands down the back of the guys jeans, stifling a sigh that his ass isn’t quite round enough to be sam’s. he has blue eyes, not brown, but dean isn’t looking at his face anyway. fucking not-sam rough in the back of the impala, moaning baby and cutting off before brother, saying sam’s name when he cums, trying not to stare at the army figure in the ashtray. hating himself for it, swearing off it, but always crawling back, chasing the high like an addict. feeling deep in his soul that sam was right to leave, that he’s better off without his sick freak of a brother.

sam being into girls with short hair, accidentally hitting on lesbians because he struggles to be attracted to anything not wearing a crew cut, flannel and work boots. he’s sick, he knows, that’s part of why he had to leave. frosh week drunk, he lets a guy flirt with him, because he’s just tall enough, just different enough, that sam can give himself plausible deniability. his lips are too thin, he’s too gentle, he smells like axe and fake leather, but sam needs something, and this is all he can get. it’s going fine, until the guy— too late now to ask his name— goes for sam’s belt and sam feels like he’s going to puke. the wrongness of it comes over him all at once, like a fever or a hex. clarity pierces his drunken state: not dean’s hands, not dean’s voice, not dean, wrong. at least it gives him an excuse to back out, a good reason to lock himself in the bathroom and sit on the floor, trying to determine if the dry heaving is cheap beer or grief.

girls are— safe. long hair, soft hands, sweet and gentle and nowhere close to 6’1. this way, there’s nothing reminding sam of the absence, nothing pushing against the barrier he’s made around what he really wants. he can be normal.

he knows it’s dean after the first strike, knows his footsteps and his breath and the outline of his shoulders, even now, even in the dark. but sam doesn’t stop fighting, because he’ll have to stop touching dean, and sam can allow himself this one thing, after so long. dean’s leather jacket on sam’s bare arms is making him dizzy, and sam lets dean take him down, the beginning and end of sam’s understanding of desire. a reminder, familiar like dean’s rough palms on his wrists, his weight pinning sam, his shit-eating grin and drawled easy, tiger; sam has never been normal.

I know i'm a masochist or something because unrequited love is just incredibly delicious to me. I babbled about unrequited samjohn but also unrequited wincest??? It's so peculiar and messy because dean loves sam more than ANYTHING in this world and yet doesn't return sam's love and desires the same way and it tears sam apart. Maybe dean would be even down for fucking him in any way he wants but i think sam wouldn't go through with it. Baby boy will cry and say "not like this" and reject dean after dean fully offers himself to him. It's just. so good. Yearning teen sam literally drives me up the walls man. The way his entire body will be on fire from the intensity of his want and it'll be painful, it'll be a torture. Whether next to dean or not, sam feels like drowing in hellfire but he still wants to be near dean and he wants to run away and he wants to crack dean's ribs open and curl inside and he wants to break dean's jaw and beat him bruised and then leave and leave everything behind.

He'll make a new life at Stanford, he'll have a picture of john & mary on his shelf but no trace of dean. He'll delete dean's number and reject his calls and buries his nose in book until he crumbles. He falls on his knees for older flirty pretty boys with leather jacket and Marlboro on their lips. But one day guilt would be too much and he'd just go for men with no trace of sweetness in them, men who are nothing like dean, and he let them bend him over and use him. And he will finally get a girlfriend and try to turn his mess of a life around. He'll fall in love and he'll have some alien sense of happiness for a while. He'll bury all the past so so deep and he'll be happy that maybe he is finally leaving that scorching incestuous love behind and then one night he wakes up to sound of someone breaking in his apartment
