myhouse.wad-adjacent facts and blatant shilling for the musicians who soundtracked it
As has been largely disseminated, new mappers making levels based on their own houses are a common trope in the doom community, and they are often referred to generically as "myhouse.wad". The earliest myhouse maps are actually some of the oldest Doom maps in existence, predating Doom 2 (also at least one Doom 2 map was based on Sandy Peterson's house...)
A lot of people are impressed with myhouse.wad's room over room. I'm more impressed that in the first house myhouse used a boom-style silent teleporter to implement room-over-room sloppily so that the illusion very easily breaks (just step back up the stairs while one of the basement doors is open: it will snap shut because you are being teleported back into the version of the house with an upstairs, and thus there can't be an open door there), just like an inexperienced mapper might in 1999, before using modern GZDoom portals to do it more convincingly in the second house.
There's been a lot of theorizing about myhouse's author, probably because veddge is a very very competent mapper and also because everyone who does know who the author is has stonewalled inquiries at the author's request, implying that the author has a meaningful identity in the Doom community. Or maybe they're just shy. However, DavidXNewton noted in his analysis series on myhouse that it does a lot of things in a ways that are unnecessary using modern UDMF and ZScript but would be familiar to someone coming from a less advanced mapping format like Boom or Old ZDoom. This is indicative of Veddge being more along the lines of what he says he is: either someone truly returning after a long absence, or at the very least someone who isn't terribly familiar with modern GZDoom mapping. Either that, or the entire map was mapped in character. I genuinely don't know which I'd find more impressive.
"doomcute" is a term used to refer to maps that recreate real-world items or environments in doom (usually because the immediate reaction from players is "oh that's adorable!"). Myhouse maps are invariably trying for doomcute, but another early doomcute map was Shamus Young's Doom City from 1995 (yes, Shamus Young of DM of the Rings fame. I discovered while researching that he actually died last year. Rest in peace). Doom City recreated a couple of real-world looking buildings, but the thing everyone seems to remember about Doom City is its recreation of... a gas station. Food for thought.
Hilariously, myhouse almost got lost in the shuffle on Doomworld, because most people weren't looking for a myhouse.wad to play. Several of Veddge's collaborators posted in the thread to keep this from happening.
I believe Veddge's confirmed collaborators on myhouse are Kevansevans, esselfortium, and Jimmy. I don't know much about Kevansevans, but I believe he helped with the scripting and some of his scripting work from other sources made it into the wad because he's officially credited (as is everyone whose work was used in the map: it's all inside the PK3). Essel and Jimmy are credited only in anagram form because they are responsible for the music, which is actually wholly original (also Jimmy gave no indication he was involved until it was revealed by players unscrambling the anagram, which was very very funny).
I'm actually going to talk about Essel and Jimmy in detail over the next few bullet points, because I feel like it. And they're both really neat.
Sarah "esselfortium" Mancuso is responsible for memory=entryrrrr/////, the piece the plays in the burned house and various other places throughout the wad. She's composed professionally for video games and has several albums, but in the Doom community she's probably best known for creating and managing the Back to Saturn X project, a trilogy of megawads (only two of which are presently released) being developed by a massive team of modders, with custom assets, a custom palette, a complete original OST, and some very impressive maps... all intended to be playable with a vanilla doom2.exe. Which is insane: Vanilla Doom is brutal to map for, on account of harsh limitations that it's hard to be confident your map or project falls within. Back to Saturn X was so ambitious that it found previously undiscovered ways that Doom can crash. Of course, in addition to running the project, Essel also mapped for it, made textures for it, and composed a significant portion of the soundtrack. And because that was not impressive enough apparently, Essel also (with some help from a few others) created Knee-Deep in Knee-Deep in ZDoom, a joke wad that takes the (in)famous Knee-Deep in ZDoom, a mapset designed to show off the features of ZDoom, and recreates as many of its tricks as it can entirely in vanilla. A feat I can only describe as black magic of the highest order. She also went out of her way to say Trans Rights during her bethesda interview, so that's cool too.
James "Jimmy" Paddock is responsible for the increasingly glitchy and messed-up version of D_RUNNIN that plays in the second house. Which figures, because Jimmy's music is everywhere. He takes commissions for music, he's contributed free music to the community, and his music is very very popular. Notable wads he's contributed tracks to include Plutonia 2, Speed of Doom, Reverie, Back to Saturn X Episodes 1 and 2, Eviternity, and Doom 2 In Spain Only, and the MIDI soundtrack to John Romero's SIGIL, which some consider to be even better than the Buckethead soundtrack. He also is the project lead and mind behind The Adventures of Square, a standalone, free game made in GZDoom, he's done texture work, he's made several award-winning doom mods (cacowards, that is), mapped for numerous other projects, and had just done a whole ton of stuff. The doom community gave him an award for lifetime achievement. Oh, and he did an alternative MIDI OST for Prodeus? Genuinely didn't know about that.
While researching this I learned that Jimmy is going to be evicted in a month, so now's a great time to check out his music online and see if you're into it. I'm not a super fan of his vocal delivery, but I really like some of his instrumentals and MP3 versions of his MIDIs.

We'd decided on a nature walk, something we could pace ourselves on. It'd been years since we'd seen one another. I'd been missing you terribly. Flashes of your smile and soft, dark eyes lingered in my memory. How could I have not known you were the person I had wanted all this time?
Countless nights spent with women I had no care for, no urge to control, no need to have them submit to me. Just meaningless, boring sex followed by the usual platitudes. "I'll call you again", "tonight was lovely". None of them meant anything to me. I wanted you. On your knees and begging for me.
I shook my head to release the thoughts I felt boiling over and tried to get myself out of bed. It was fairly early, 6 am to be exact. Probably too early for me to be up but my body was restless. I toyed with the idea of cumming before starting the morning routine. My clit sore and swollen behind the tight fabric of my panties. I pushed two fingers over her. Feeling over the soft silk, my clit a noticeable bump at this point. It felt like all of my blood had pooled into the concentrated area of my cunt. "Fuck, alright, just quickly" I muttered under my breath. Pushing in harder with my two fingers, circling my bundle of nerves slowly. Tantalizingly slow. Soaking in the sensations filling my chest and stomach. A slow build up as I began to work my hips. My hand slipped into my wetness and I was shocked with how much had accumulated already. Little movements were intense as I tried hard not to cum. I wanted to think of you as I did, maybe you'd let me pin you up against a tree today. While I fucked you senseless.
Just the idea brought me to climax. Yellow and orange dancing behind my eyelids as I let the small moans escape my lips for you. It was already 7. "How had an hour passed already?" I pondered to myself. Releasing my hand from the sticky mess that was my pussy, I tasted myself. Cherishing the sweetness I was always able to produce, letting it linger on my tongue like a fine wine. You'd enjoy the taste of me.
The morning was quick and robotic. Coffee, work out, shower, lunch and dress. Casual was the name of the game for me, but I always failed to be so with you. "You gotta keep it cool" I whispered to myself as I hovered over my lunch. Cereal, oat and cheerios. It was bland enough to quench my desire for a little bit. The milk still ice cold, helped dampen my mind. I ate in big bites. Anxious to meet up with you. Checking my phone had become a habit today. Only 11 am and an hour to go before I headed out to meet you. I needed to kill time outside of day dreaming. Mayne a few rounds of my favorite game would suffice.
I turned on the TV and sat back to play. Controller in hand. Time passed fast as I played. Happy to be distracted I almost missed the window to leave.
A quick mental check. "Backpack, water, some snacks and my rope just in case. I knew you had always wanted to fuck in the woods. I wanted to fulfill this for you...if you'd let me. Out the door I ran, I didn't want to be late.
Loud music on the drive kept me occupied and less anxious. My poor pussy still quivering in my pants. Every bump I hit seemed like agony to me. I wasn't sure how much longer I could stand the pressure.
Finally arriving, I pulled in and parked next to you. Seeing you again was unbelievable. I couldn't have dreamed you'd look so good after all this time. You'd always been so attractive to me, making me feel things I couldn't quite describe outside of animal lust.
You rolled down your window and waved. "HI babe!" You exclaimed cheerfully. I returned the wave and exited my car. Grabbing my backpack out of the passenger seat and trotting over to you. I couldn't hide how excited I was, albeit my attempt. We hugged and the same electric shockwave shuddered through me. I pulled away and met your eyes. Deep, dark and amber. Just like I'd remembered. I could tell you'd felt it too. "L..L..Let's get going love" I stuttered out. My anxiety clear and present in my demeanor. You chuckled a little and led us forward. The trails here were always quiet. Not a soul in sight besides us. I observed your figure walking away. You were so fit, tall and lithe. I loved your figure, your ass. Your fucking legs. It was all so lovely to me.
We walked for a while, the trees rustling in the wind above us, almost chattering. A language only they could understand. You filled me in on how life had been and your recent breakup. I feigned sadness for you but was happy to hear you were single again. He'd never deserved you anyways. I wouldn't tell you this, it would only seem like a platitude. But I meant it. You were an angel to me.
A certain knotted tree caught your eye as we passed it. It laid a bit of the ways off the path of the trail but you insisted on checking it out. The sounds of the leaves and twigs crunching under our feet made unseen critters scatter as we made our way towards the tree.
It's age was apparent. Strong lower limbs and a sturdy base. I couldn't help but think about roping you to it. Letting you beg me here in this trail, filled with solitude, for your orgasm.
You ran up to it as we approached, excitement in your eyes, you looked back to make sure I was there still. "Only for a minute" I yelled up to you, making my way over.  You were running your hands over the bark, letting the ridges and valleys of its rough edges trail over your fingertips. I longed for my fingers to do the same to you. So at ease, you looked serene in this moment. I sat down on the ground, back against the old oak and watched the clouds float over us. Hands behind my head, I closed my eyes and stretched out my legs. It was a good tree. A sudden pressure on my hips made me jolt up. It was you, straddled over me giggling. My hands found your hips as I smirked back. "Are you going to just tease me then or what?" I taunted you. My northeastern drawl accentuating the sharp t on the what. "I am a tease, according to you." You retorted. Beginning to circle your hips over my already swollen pussy. I could feel your warmth and it was too much. A low moan rolled off my tongue. My eyes widened in shock as you continued your tease. It didn't seem to phase you at all. You kept your eyes locked on mine. I reached up to pull your face close, gripping your chin in between my fingers. We locked lips and kissed deeply. The passion we'd both felt finally teetering over into unbearable. Slipping my tongue into your mouth, we explored each other for a bit. Moaning in between heavy breathes and slow kisses.
Pulling away from you and composing myself. "Would you like to live out a fantasy with me darling?" I half whispered to you. "I have some rope with me and I'd be happy to do what I know you need." I'd said need, because I knew you were a slut for this. Needy and desperate. Rope and me were your weakness and we both knew it. "Please, oh fuck please" You begged me. Already begging was a good sign in my eyes. " I motioned for you to get up off of my lap and let me onto my feet. You did as directed, and sat down where I was previously sitting. I dug around in my backpack in front of you. Purposefully taking my time. Letting the situation sink in, whatever fantasies you had roil around in your mind.
I pulled put the rope and stood straight. Setting the pack off to the side against the tree. "Kneel for me and beg some more."
Of course you followed direction, the good little whore you were. Kneeling before me, eyes wide and expectant. I dropped my pants and grabbed the back of your head. Winding your hair around in my hand and pushing your head into my sore wetness. I rubbed it back and forth. Letting your face please me like this for a bit. I spread my legs a little for you to further explore. Pressing your open mouth and face further into my cunt. "Beg with your mouthful for me." I purred down to you seductively. You tried, only able to mumble incoherently into me. Driving me into pulsating ecstasy. Your mouth open and pushed against the fabric of my panties was warm and familiar. I could feel your spit mixing with my cum. Your horny, dumb brain trying to make words with your mouth full of cunt. My special, eager slut.
I pulled you back by your hair and up to meet my gaze. You stumbled to your feet a bit, surprised at the sudden interruption in pace. Although stumbling, you obediently met my eyes. I let go of your hair and pulled you in close to me. Rubbing up your sides through your shirt. Letting you quiver as I explored you. "Let me help you get these clothes off" I muttered to you. Entranced by your figure, the outline of your tits through your shirt. What an exquisite woman. I slipped one hand under your shirt and then the next, gently pulling it off of you. Then your bra, reaching around to undo the clasp slowly. I loved leaving you in anticipation. Our own lovely form of edging before the fun even began. You let it fall to the leaf scattered ground, as i stepped back to admire you half undressed. Exposed and vulnerable here for me. You looked awkward, like you weren't sure what to do with your hands. It only made me want you more. The sun glistened behind you, piercing violently through the tree cover. As if, it couldn't help but admire you as well. The tone of your skin, the way your breasts hung so slightly. Your stomach, toned but not muscular. "Now the pants beautiful" I wanted you to do this step. Show me your obedience. You complied, dropping them to the ground as well. Leaving them in a pile around your ankles. "Panties too and then against the tree for me, facing it" I eloquently directed you. Enjoying the control.
You stepped out of your pants and folded them neatly, placing them beside the pile of clothes on the ground. Your panties came sliding off gracefully. Over your thighs and down past your knees as you bent. "Put them in your mouth for me first love. Wouldn't want you making too much noise would we?" I watched you shove your soaked panties in between your lovely lips and I felt my pussy clench in anticipation. You turned to face the old, knotted tree and placed both hands against it. Ass poking out, like my own little puppet. Walking over with the rope in hand, I could see your breathing pick up. One hand ran its way up your thigh and over your asscheek, the other hand teased you with the rope. Letting you feel the roughness of the cord, your mind remembering the way it felt to be restrained but safe. You shuddered and I chuckled out loud. "Relax baby, it's coming" I whispered into your ear. Letting the hand that was previously firmly planted on your ass, smack you. Once and then twice. Hard and fast. You bit down on the panties in your mouth and whimpered audibly. I spanked you again. Harder this time, letting you squirm in anticipation for the next one. It never came though. As quickly as your brain could process the stinging pain, I was knelt down. Tying your legs to the tree. Knotting around your ankles and then anchoring you to some exposed roots on either side of you. You struggled a little, which was only more fun for me. Overpowering you wasn't hard, and I knew it's what you wanted. You loved to fight my discipline until I wore you down. Turning you into a mumbling, cum hungry mess. Taking my time with you wasn't an issue either, and we both knew it.
Finally getting you tied to my satisfaction, I stood to work on the top half. Guiding your arms behind your back and resting your head against the bark for a moment. Letting you soak in the texture of it. "Is that too tight dear?" I asked. You shook your head no, as I secured your hands together. Leading the rope around your hips and around your thighs. I anchored your hands to the waist harness I'd created. Fuck, I had missed your body. The way the cord bit into your skin. Puckering it slightly, leaving indents that were made just for me. The pulse of my clit was at a roar now.
I pulled my shirt off, and let you use it to rest your head against. Using two fingers to probe your swollen, wet pussy. Circling your clit with your own wetness then letting my fingers slip into your tight hole, only to never fully enter you. Your legs shook and you moaned loudly. I used my free hand to grip your tits in. Groping them, feeling the soft skin on the palm of my hands. Your nipples hardening as I touched you.
I pushed two long fingers into you, running them with pressure along your top wall until I found the small dip of your g spot. I wiggled my fingers rapidly once I'd found her, you shook hard. Your body beginning to lose control. Only the rope and your head holding you in place. "Is it so hard to focus on standing right now gorgeous?" I mocked you. I let my other hand wander down to your clit and fucked you hard while I circled your swollen heat. Stroking in and out slowly at first, letting you quiver as I explored every inch of you I could find.
Soon the slow strokes turned into frenzied ones, the sound of your wet cunt loud and clear. Stark even, against the backdrop of silence. Your still gagged mouth making incoherent words. Like you'd been overtaken by the holy spirit. I brought you as close to climax as I could and then stopped. Giggling cruelly behind you. "OH no, did you actually want to cum sweetness?" You nodded yes, even trying to mouth it. "Spit it out" I mocked you again, still inside you. One finger pushing into your clit as well, the throb of your want was immense.
I released you, pulling my fingers out and leaving you a writhing mess. I snatched the panties out of your mouth and turned your head to look me in the eyes. "Fuck K, please let me finish." You begged desperately. Obscenities dripping from your lips like venom. The anger turning to desperation, and back to anger. "You're a bitch" you wailed like a lost dog. I watched in fascination as you tried to bargain with me. Promising me things we both knew you couldn't give right now. I wouldn't hold you to them, your need was enough for me. I started fucking you again, hard and fast. Your legs shook with the force of the thrusts, struggling to keep your footing on the slick ground. It only made me want to fuck you harder. My fingers previously pushing your pathetic clit in, now circling her confidently. I knew you were close and wanted you to know how much I'd wanted this. I leaned over you. Our skin sticking together from the sweat and evening dew now forming on us. " Cum for me baby. Good girls always get to cum for me" I praised you in a hushed tone. "My sweet girl, so good for me." The cum rushed out of you, squirting on me and my arm and hand. Dripping down your taut legs and onto the ground like rain. "Jesus christ don't stop please" you yelled out, letting me fuck you to completion. Your clit twitching and your pussy tightening around me. I kissed your back and told you how good you were. My precious girl. Kneeling to untie you and letting you drop to your knees from the strain of holding yourself up. I pulled you closer to me, intertwining myself with you. Allowing your head to rest against my chest for a moment. The sun was starting to peek low in the leaf cover. Golden rays emanating through it like messages from higher beings. We basked in it for a while, the warm air on our naked bodies. You held tight to me. The experience washing over you, the tightness leaving your limbs and neck. I felt you relax in to me.  I let my fingers trail over you. Admiring your own grooves, ridges and curves. Languishing in the thought I'd have to let you get dressed and we would have to leave this magical spot. The tree stood tall above us, a guardian and secret keeper. We wouldn't tell a soul of this, but we both knew, if the we ever passed the tree again. This day would ring loud in our minds. Burned in like good memories should be.

Well This Looks Pretty Damn Cool!
youtube
At long last... NIMONA, visually in motion! And a concrete release date, too. June 30th. Same day as DreamWorks' RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN, which will be rolling in theaters. I wish we could this very gorgeous and dynamic-looking picture on the big screen too, but... Oh well...
Anyways, not much for me to say other than it looks every bit as cool as I imagined. Another CG-but-painted-looking movie, with some very smooth work and such a cool look. It looks way more like a classic 2D animated picture, or a really painterly indie game.
Arriving now, this picture was about 3/4 done in animation before the studio it originated from, Blue Sky Studios, was shut down by The Walt Disney Company's former CEO. I'd like to think a lot of what we're seeing here was laid down in 2020/early 2021, so in a way, it was doing some neat stuff before other neat stuff came out. Namely THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES, ARCANE: LEAGUE OF LEGENDS, and PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH. The picture was in the works for a while, too, under FEAST director Patrick Osborne at first (later taken over by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, of SPIES IN DISGUISE), and I'd assume it was always aiming for this kind of look, pre-SPIDER-VERSE even.
It's also refreshing to see a big-time animated movie with more of a, shall I say... Mischievous bent to it? Not quite moral protagonist, for starters, and that's on full display here in the trailer... if the first-look images released in the lead-up to this trailer's release didn't already spell it out for you. That smile of hers just got more and more (delightfully) devilish with each new image. That's good, we need more variety in PG-level stories. Nothing wrong with protagonists who are a little bit on the bad side. Worked okay enough for DESPICABLE ME and MEGAMIND. From the graphic novel synopsis, it seems like it's going to be a very subversive take on good and evil, if the law is actually right or not (very timely, I'd say), etc. Maybe our leads aren't so bad after all, I've got some reading to do!
I still consider this to be a Blue Sky movie, their final film - partially... A bittersweet coda to their long existence. The movie was 75% done before the plug was pulled, and reports have said that the crew did NOT start from scratch after production resumed... and I'd imagine a lot of what was finished was kept in the movie despite some things I've heard it about being significantly retooled after Annapurna and Netflix picked it up. I'd imagine there were some things the directors and writing team could get away with there that they couldn't under Disney. There were reports from former Blue Sky crew members that Disney higher ups did push back on things in the movie. Keep in mind, Disney was going to release Pixar's LIGHTYEAR without the lesbian kiss - a barely second-long scene, until they faced pressure due to the former CEO's initial support of that wet-sandwich Florida governor's draconian anti-LGBTQIA+ nonsense. STRANGE WORLD, as we all know, was straight up dumped with very muted fanfare. NIMONA's poster curiously lists Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor as the writers. Years prior, the movie was being written by Marc Haimes, a writer on Shannon Tindle's meditative Laika wonder KUBO & THE TWO STRINGS. (Just so you know, that picture was largely taken away from him.) Haimes is credited as "Story by", including a curiously large amount of people including the two screenwriters and the two directors, in addition to two other people: Pamela Ribon and Keith Bunin... That's... Quite a lot of writers on this one.
Either way, I'm excited nonetheless. Forward-thinking visuals, LGBTQIA+ representation, a seemingly new kind of story for this animated feature format, something a little edgier... Might just be "the one that got away" from Disney, may even cost them their usual Oscar win come this winter. I will consider this film to be Blue Sky's swan song, I hope they get some kind of mention in the credits...
Speaking of Disney... Not cool that they're flat-out removing movies and shows from Disney+, amidst a writer's strike, and some with LGBTQIA+ themes and content... Right before Pride Month. I don't understand why removing something they made and/or own from a service, and having it not be available anywhere else, helps anybody. Them, or the market... At the very least, they can put some of these movies, such as the Howard Ashman documentary HOWARD, on physical media. Nasty side effects of what David Zaslav did to Warner Bros.' library and all the content purges happening under his leadership there. Capitalism, how you don't make any sense...
Somewhere buried in all the Cannes Film Festival news is the selling of an animated feature called THE GROWCODILE, a little romp about a young girl hiding her ever-growing pet croc from her shoe store-owning father, and the adventure she goes on with her grandfather to give the animal a new home. It's based on a book, and will be directed by Cartoon Saloon veterans Joost Van Den Bosch and Erik Verkerk.
What else? Awkwafina has been cast in KUNG FU PANDA 4... Apparently. I'm not sure how reputable "The Hollywood Handle" is, a site I've barely ever heard of... but if she's onboard, I wonder who she will be voicing. She was, after all, in DreamWorks' own THE BAD GUYS as Ms. Tarantula. The villainous Chameleon is said to be a female character, so I wouldn't be surprised if she plays the main antagonist in this. From bad guy to really bad guy.
That's pretty much all the big animation news I can think of, but... Yeah... NIMONA, finally around the corner, and we finally get to see how it actually moves and plays out...

Board game review - Barony, Marc André's magnum opus
In 2014 french designer Marc André released his most commercially successfull game, Splendor, an elegant tableau builder. It quickly became a massive hit, winning a double digit of awards and being nominated for the highly prestigious Spiel des Jahres, even managing to become one of the few designer games to break out of the hobby and is today loved by gamers and non-gamers alike. The year after, in 2015, Marc André released his greatest game to date. The comparatively unnoticed Barony.
Tumblr media
CORE GAMEPLAY
After having randomized a map to play on and chosen your start positions, the expansion of your dominion over the land starts. Though there are six actions to chose from in the game, three of them tower over the rest as the most important. Recruiting knights, moving knights/attacking villages and removing knights to establish villages. Using these three simple mechanics you'll slowly but surely spread over the map, taking control of territory. Establishing a village has two functions. It's a defensive move, allowing you to create borders and section off a part of the map that is yours to rule. Secondly it nets you point-tokens, though acquiring these tokens are not enough to get the points. If you have 15 points worth of tokens you may spend spend a turn taking the fourth action in the game: cashing them in and moving up one rank. Reach the highest rank of king, and the game ends. Usually the player who ends the game also wins it. This leads me marvelously into my next point:
TEMPO
The tempo considerations come in two forms for this game. Firstly: whenever you take an action, you always have the option of doing more than one thing. You always recruit at least two knights, you always move two knights and when you establish villages, you may establish any amount of villages you want. This gives a feeling that you can always either do an action or DO an action. You're always pushing to be just a tad bit more efficient, but if you spread yourself too thin you will be severely punished by the other players.
For the second point I'd like to loan some terminology from the classic game "go" as Barony shares quite a few similarities with it. The concept of "sente" is ever present in this game; sente being a move that demands an answer from another player. It's taking the initiative and forcing someone else into a corner, for example, staging an attack for the sole reason of forcing your opponent to spend their valuable time defending.
The earlier mentioned concept of having to take time to cash in your points works wonderfully here. If you do it to early you might be giving up opportunities to play sente, or worse, having a sente move played on you. But the longer you take to score your points, the higher is the risk that someone will find an opportunity to rob those points from you by attacking you.
STRUCTURE
These tempo considerations gives the game a wonderfully structure. The first half of the game is merciless, as everyone does a mad scramble to establish their borders and get territory. In the second half of the game you're doing one if two things based on how you fared in the first half: Either you're playing defensively, constantly making decisions between taking time to exploit your territory or keeping up your defense. If you're one of those left poor by the first act however, you will instead play the role as the aggressor. Pushing borders back to claim territory for your own and, if your opponent neglects their duty to defend, maybe even stealing a tile or two from them.
TURN OFFS
Barony is entirely and proudly a deterministic abstract. Based on that sentence alone you will probably have some idea if this game isn't for you. And that is honestly the only turn off this game has in my opinion.
CONCLUSION
Barony is a fantastic, simple and short game, thought it's depth feels almost endless. The randomization of the board every time you play will drastically change how the game flows and how you have to approach it, leaving you with a game that feels fresh and exciting every single time you play. Few abstracts come close to this level of quality decision making and if this game sounds appealing to you, you should definitely check it out.
Music pairing:
For this game I would recommend the album "The Sims Medieval, Vol 1" and "The Sims Medieval, Vol 2" both by John Debney.

nfadsnfldsf I love you, too <3 [swtor asks!]
2. Who's your main?
Will Smith showoff.meme. Why, my sonboy, of course!
Tumblr media
It's Tyr, lol. My bestest double agent son. He's who I do everything with first, generally speaking; my initial playthrough for him on Star Forge is where I currently have him at pace with the story patches, and, ofc, when I decided I was going to replay him on Satele Shan, he's... the favorite child. I'd tell you not to tell my other ocs, but I think we're all well aware he's the chosen son, lol.
7. A class you haven't played (much) of yet?
In my heart, I want to say Trooper, but technically I suppose it's really Bounty Hunter. I never actually completed BH's vanilla story on Star Forge before I started up my Satele Shan playthroughs, but I have, technically, done Trooper's 1-50 twice because I have one on each server. Then again, Len (my SS BH) is in the early chapters of KOTET, so I've actually done more content with him, but I'd probably have to pull play-time in game to give you an accurate answer.
I've not been much of a military action enthusiast, so Trooper's story, while still par for the rest of the class stories, is way more of a slog for me, so if we flip this to which one am I going to play more readily? Bounty Hunter. So, eventually, it'll likely leave Trooper here.
23. One item not in-game that you'd like to see?
Well, topically, yesterday I was poking around at the lightsaber pikes available and I could have sworn we had a Zakuul-style one available, maybe Senya's? Searching for it tells me I'm not losing my marbles, it must just be out of rotation at the moment, but I'd like to get that and maybe put together some Zakuulan armor for Rhystyl when I get him a bit further into KOTXX, since he'll be the primary face of the Alliance between him and Savosta.
And at least so far I haven't run into quite what I'm looking for, but something like the Remote Outcast's headpiece, but... just the lower face covering. Similarly - and I know this one risks clipping issues, but stick with me a moment - I've also kinda itched for a pair of goggles that sit a little higher, like Koth wears his more as a headband piece than over the eyes. Short of a helmet toggle like in FFXIV, lol, I'd like that as an option. I wanna see my character's faces usually because I love them, hence the goggles, but there's also a few looks I'd just like the more subtle covering for. I have too many Agents.
25. One species not playable that you'd love to play?
I have two thoughts, but topical to GS4 just releasing, I'd like to see more of the Selonians. They don't really fit to the whole 'more or less human with some tweaks' theme for playable races, so playing as one is probably a stretch and I bet it'd take Work, but what I've seen so far of them in-game is neat and I wanna know more.
27. Favorite companion?
I mean, probably Theron. :P My endless excited tippy-taps when I get to play Shadow of Revan are largely because that's when I get Theron back, lol.
31. Best class storyline finale?
I'm biased, absolutely, but it's Agent. And I have played all of them, lol. Like, please, I am absolutely biased, but I do also genuinely believe Agent has some of the best consistency and carry-over between chapters of all 8 classes. The multiple variances to the ending based on your previous choices, the little hazards/puzzles... I could be here for a while, but if I had to boil it down, it feels very Agent - not that the Sith stories don't know how they end, but Agent benefits from me liking the dramatic spy action movies, lol.
And it just. factors in so much of your previous experience. It genuinely feels like the ultimate of Nine's career. Everything has lead you here. Nothing is ever going to be the same. Even if you win, even if you walked away, nothing is the same. It absolutely recolors the entire rest of the game viewed through the lens of the Star Cabal. That's fucking epic.
35. Thoughts on Revan?
I don't have KOTOR context, so SWTOR Revan's all I've known. I generally skip the mid-late game flashpoints (Taral V/Maelstrom, and Boarding Party/Foundry, particularly the Foundry) after just. How much I play and how many characters I have, lol. The Foundry I avoid mostly on the grounds that HK's fight is a pain in the ass. Anyway, off-topic.
I've overall enjoyed him. I don't think he overstays his welcome in the narrative and Revan's story is definitely one I'd fall in love with. The only thing that holds me back from going to do KOTOR myself is I already have such a cranky time trying to run Dragon Age Origins, lol, and also I'm a creature of habit so I already have SWTOR, lol. I have fond, if slightly muddled, memories of doing the Republic FPs with my Jedi Consular for the first time and it being kind of big for me because Revan's struggle is so big and you get the impression that so much rode on his decisions either way, and my Consular was just like '... let me help. Let. me. help.' (He's like that.)
Anyway, I guess sorta... long story short, Shadow of Revan is one of my favorite expansions, I never fail to find it interesting regardless of which class I tackle it with. It's not necessarily all because it's Revan and I'll cede that I generally agree that Star Wars as a whole is a bit obsessed with legacies and I think sometimes that's detrimental (and sometimes completely counterproductive to all you work for, looking at things as a Cipher agent, lol - stop telling everyone I'm alive challenge @ the Imperial Military).
I will look forward to a KOTOR remake if it ever does actually come? I keep hearing rumblings about it, but the last few times I've followed game releases to the letter it's been a Process, lol. so I'm coasting on the fringes of whatever's up with that.
40. Favorite world boss?
I'd say I've never done world bosses, but there is a fun story I can share. When baby didn't know what a world boss was, I did once sneak over and poke the Lance Squadron Command on Yavin IV and, predictably, got melted in like less than a minute. So, technically, I've seen them, lol. Oh and Lucky was hanging around on Corellia that one time I was doing Dread Seed stuff and I was praying to whatever powers that were listening I'd get very lucky and would go unnoticed, ha ha, which, yes. I survived that encounter with Lucky none the wiser. Tell Acina she owes me hazard pay. Anyway. xD
Choosing on looks alone then, I like the snow kitties. I'd like to pet Snowblind if I didn't think they would nuke my flimsy little Operative ass in like a minute.
47. Your greatest moment in-game to date?
Hmmm... that's a tough one? There was this one time I was on one of my lower level characters doing Hammer Station in group finder and I totally forgot about the Rocket Boost thing to get over the gap as groups usually skip certain trash packs there, so I went plummeting to my death in front of 3 total strangers and I could NOT stop laughing because one of them made like an 'ah wayward padawan' comment and explained stealth or rocket boosts and it was. I just had a good laugh, lol.
Uhh... silly stories aside kind of though, probably @captainderyn and I having flashpoint adventures together with Era and Tyr? xD We did Kuat Drive Yards together last which I don't think either of us had ever done, so we mopped the floor of most of the dungeon and then we got to the boss lol and we had a moment trying to piece together the mechanics and then we kicked absolute ass and it was just REALLY fun to no pressure explore and learn and conquer - part of what I did enjoy about doing extreme fights in FFXIV when I did was having those moments where you all compare your mental notes and getting that aHA of figuring out the mechanic, but also we just had. a really good time about memeing on the final hallway because we had some uh... some big guy with bombs and a small army of reinforcements as our final encounter and we'd been largely two Operatives stealthing around to our objectives before but that hallway before the boss had nothing. And you just knew.
So, long story short, we joked the hallway was empty because the boss had to pull all the reinforcements back to deal with us and that they were all busy hiding in the ceiling, lol. I sadly don't have anything from inside our Kuat adventures, but I do have Tyr and Era slaying in one of the initial cutscenes.
Tumblr media
Flashpoints are more fun with friends. xD Hoping to do a lot more silly flashpoint shenanigans in the future : D

Since the weekend is upon us, you probably won't hear from me as it's booked (as usual wah wah), so I'll try and make this ask good.
As soon as I read Alias Grace, I immediately reread it. Margaret Atwood, without exaggeration, changed my life. Now I will definitely try out Sheri S. Tepper!
Yes!!! Goonies never say diiiiiiiiiiiiiiie! I went to Astoria just to visit the filming locations and even got to touch the ORV (and the bullet holes haha). Your taste is immaculate, mbbdarling! The LOTR movies are my all-time favorites.
You don't have to say your age specifically, but are you also a child of the 80s or maybe the 90s?
You have really lived a lot! So super cool. My uncle was also a pilot, though he was always US-based. I have been to Germany a couple of times, too. We have family there, and I also majored in German in college. It holds the most special place in my heart.
I suspected you were a fantasy-lover, so maybe I was being rather sneaky there as all four of those genres are my faves. I couldn't lose! //evil laughter//
SORCHA. IS. LIFE. As we rewatched it this past weekend, it hit me--she's probably the reason why I'm obsessed with and drawn to curly redheads.
Speaking of hair, are you a long or short hair person? You have a fave hair color? (I've dyed my hair red for the last 20 years, and I'll probably dye it until I go gray--I also love all-gray hair.)
I can't talk about Lee Scoresby... </3 I am also a profound lover of Iorek Byrnison, though I revile that damn golden monkey. //clenches fist//
You like video games like my bestie does! I am not a gamer--I love watching others play--with two exceptions: Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. The only two video games I ever loved. :)
Those are SOLID tropes. I love those, too! Found family goes hand-in-hand with quests, which you already know I love. Nothing beats a good ensemble of characters.
I'd probably end up being the leader, I guess, so I'm coming to you, my consigliere, for all the plans and schematics. I will trust in your fastidious nature to lead us safely to the dragon's hoard!
Okay, more nosy questions time.
If you were an animal, what would you be:
Dream job:
House, apartment, cabin, or treehouse:
And back to MX--
Favorite MX photoshoot/aesthetic:
Favorite Hyungwon hairstyle:
Favorite Jooheon hairstyle:
(Examples are always appreciated *wink wink*)
Have the best weekend, mbbdarling! Take good care of yourself and smile lots!
NO. WAY. Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are my all time favorite games 😂 I'm starting to think we're the same person!! I almost cried when I found out that they had finally re-released Chrono Cross for the PS4, I'm just about to start getting relics from the dragons.
I was a short hair person all through high school and most of my early 20s but I have been a long hair person for years now. I had it down to my butt at one point but I recently gave myself a long wolfcut just before my partner and I went to see Ateez. I've had it so many colors (I was a punk back in the day, so I've always liked dying it) but it is currently fire engine red and I think I'll keep it that way for a while. I also recently did a blue to purple ombre, half neon green and half black, half pink and half blue (that was for Seventeen!), and all black.
Okay questions time!
What Animal Would You Be: Definitely some kind of corvid. I identify too strongly with bluejays, but crows are also excellent.
Dream Job: I actually love the job I have right now (which I won't be specific about for privacy reasons, but its an admin position) but I secretly always wanted to have a self-sufficient farm and a little shop where I could sell handmade candles and soaps and handspun and dyed yarn lol
House, Apartment, Cabin, or Treehouse: Okay it's not practical at all but I would absolutely love to live in a treehouse like the ones that they have in Hook. But since that would never ever happen in a million years, a cabin in the woods is the ideal.
Favorite MX Aesthetic: Okay look. I really really love the Shootout jumpsuits. Jooheon especially looks super hot in them.
Favorite Hyungwon Hair: THE GRAY HAIR AKDKKSKAKZKSKAK LOOK AT HIM
Tumblr media
Favorite Jooheon Hair: I mean, he invented having blond hair soooooo...
Tumblr media
Look at this man, he's so gorgeous???? How???
I hope you have a great weekend!! 💗

The Megafauna Of Ald-Amura for Sandy Pug Games Is Unintentionally Live
Well over a year ago, I accepted a grant from Sandy Pug Games to write a supplement for their game Monster Care Squad.
Monster Care Squad is heavily inspired by Studio Ghibli, set in a gentle world where giant creatures live with people and sometimes they get sick or weird things happen to them and the people try to take care of them. So like Princess Mononoke...without the violence. I think. I never really got Princess Mononoke, tbh.
Okay, new pitch: Totoro is sick with something weird and he needs your help.
Addendum: This isn't my usual thing where the sting is "and also they are horrors from the abyss that devour people for sustenance."
It's actually a lot worse.
It's sincere.
THAT'S REAL HORROR, BABY!
Anyway, my pitch literally included the phrase "heckin' chonkers" because I wanted to provide the players with some Big Fellas, Large Lads, and other big things to climb on and try to heal.
So imagine a giant capybara, basically a powerful god that is one of the oldest beings in existence, magically driven insane by ??? and thundering across the plain in a fury while your intrepid crew tries to hang onto it and play Dr. House and heal it.
They said, "Sounds great, send us a link when you put it out, here's some art you can use," and gave me some money.
And then I started grad school and then I suddenly had to evacuate to Tyler, Texas and then I lived in a hotel for a month and then I had to get moved into a new place and then my marriage exploded.
But anyway, as I heaved myself back into something resembling a creative process...look, there is one thing about me. I may be a dour pain in the ass, but I try to hit my deadlines. I try to complete my assignments. I try to deliver what I say I'll deliver. I think of myself as, in baseball terms, your #3-#5 starter, maybe not the flamethrower or the All-Star, but the guy that gets the ball every 4 or 5 days and when he starts games 3 and 6 of the Series the fans kind of relax because okay, he's got this.
My favorite players are Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina. Really good, even some hardware, but probably Hall of Very Good guys in the big picture. But the real heads know.
I want to be clear that this is entirely my own damage and Sandy Pug never demanded anything or even said "Hey we gave you a few dollarydoos, are you ever doing anything?" Which they would've been right to do. But the money was long since spent. Like "yeah call this La Quinta Inn in Texas, see if you can talk em out of anything" spent.
But no, it is me that--sitting in a new apartment with nothing from my previous life save my car and my two cats--said "Well I just have to finish this thing before I work on anything else and that's all there is to it."
My original idea for this, painful tho it be to admit, was way over my own head, I wanted lots of big animals from all kinds of biospheres, just this massive compendium, I think I'd blocked out 75-100 animals.
So I cut it down to what I'd already worked on and a reasonable number of interesting animals.
But being a pretentious dork, I really wanted this to *feel* like it was a musty old book you found in a pile with citations like "It came to me in a dream" and "I heard from this guy who heard it from his brother so obviously it's incredibly reliable." Which required learning InDesign pretty much from scratch and a lot of time looking at scans of old books for page textures and whatnot.
I actually wasn't planning to put it out today, I was just going to upload the files and everything because normally DriveThru does manual approvals. But this has been one of those days where I just couldn't get in a *groove*, so when my publishing dashboard said it was live, I went "Okay, sure. Of course. Let's go. " Only I could somehow early release a game well over a year overdue.
So one year-ish later but also early, The Megafauna of Ald-Amura.
And even if you don't pay for it or play the game but you download it you will go "my god this absolute maniac made this readable but it still kinda smells musty". I think I did good there. Nailed what I wanted to do.
Get it here.

Yeah, I get what you mean 🙈 There was a time I was 100% immersed in reading fanfics about their BROTP/frenemy-ship and uff, just all the emotional damage and depth as well as problems and love one can pull out of those two WITHOUT having to go off canon is just...WOW! And ohh, esp. their early years together just give SO MUCH, like, Obi taking in that responsibility regardless of everyone being against it, him being a bit jealous/bitter how Qui-Gon (who nearly didn't take Obi as his Padawan and pretty much had to be begged to) seemed willing to "drop" Obi for Ani, Ani struggling to "not feel", being an outsider, having to catch up, ... Just, uff, SO MUCH UNSAID/UNSHOWN CONTENT!😭😍😭😍😭
Ohh, is it because of his weird romantic talk that you're not really a fan of Anakin's or just generally didn't vibe with him?🤔😂
Fine, judge all you want, I don't care, it's not like judging isn't kinda an inherently human trait anyway🤷🏻‍♀️😂💃🏻
Ohh, okay, Yeah, I think I'll have to go and check that 🤔
...Eh, why would we need to feed them? You DO realise those are free kangaroos who come and go without having to have our permission or being dependent on us?😅 It's not a zoo, Kat😂 So, no, they aren't dead, they're perfectly fine😁
Nooo, HALT, STOP! I might be the author, but it's not like they ever actually DO what I PLANNED, UH-UH, those two are their usual headstrong-goat-like selves and suddenly decide to change the storyline or just make everything I write turn to 💩, so nope, not my fault🤷🏻‍♀️😂 (PS: You know, the more I think about it, I actually just wanna snap and tell everyone and everything off too 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 Like, what a chill life 😉)
Hmm, True, I've seen it in AO3, but nowhere as commonly as back on fanfiction.net (aw, sometimes I really miss those days of Schilling through all fanfiction.net pages, but ao3 really is the easier/better site🙈)
😂😂 Ohh, apropo Rhea, I was wrong, I'd forgotten about Rhea in the Hunger Games AU, THAT one is awesome🙈😂
Yess, same, fingers crossed!!😁🙈
..."Powers"?🧐🤨
Ooooo-kay, I really didn't need THAT image in my head...ehww, all those bacteria on their tongues after that😰🙈🤢
Absolutely traumatizing, just half-imagining that makes me wanna go to therapy😅😂
Yes, yes, as long as MW are happy☺😊🤩💃🏻
Ehh, wasn't the film with Ewan the Illuminati one? I don't remember him in the Da Vinci code, but it's been a while, so maybe he WAS in both movies?🤔😅
No promises 😂😁🤷🏻‍♀️
Thaanks☺ You too! Nearly reached the weekened, too😉
XXX
What I like about the fics is how they can explore more things from the canon and thing that were ignored and some SW fics nailed shit. Things like, you know, characters having heart to heart conversation or monologues in their heads about how they don't get the behavior of the other xD God bless the fics ;D
I'm not a fan of the chosen one trope. He was interesting because he was chosen one, then he was the bad guy, just to end as the chosen one again. But still, first annoying kid, then annoying teen talking about sand and having super dumb lines and then a pissed off dude killing YOUNGLINGS! So, in a way he broke the trope but in the end he didn't xD But that was Vader. I can't really think about Anakin and Vader as an one xD Plus, well, I kind of felt the time was wasted on him, when we could just watch Obi-Wan staring at walls or something ;)
And dunno, i think I'm rarely fan of the main heroes of the stories, tehy are too predictable, I guess?
(before I forget, Poets Of The Fall released a new song, Chasing Echoes)
*sips tea*
Mhm. Tell that to Greenpeace when they when finally get my complaints about you.
This is what you say yourself before the sleep? D: Because they all EXIST IN YOUR HEAD. Without you, the HORRBILE angst would not exist! Ha! (Do it! Rao is my witness, thaty i wanted to do it after many SG eps or in some of my stories)
Yeah, I hold some sentiment over FF.net, it was my first fanfiction sire after all. It was annoying and posting was sometimes a pain in the ass, but still, good memories xD
LOL, you are right, she is nice there. How the reading that fic is going? :D
I can curse people and I am pals with a real life demon. Just saying.
IKR?! Who the fuck wrote it?!!! I know it was Chris, so the scene was hot just becasue he was in it, but stillllllllllllllllllllllll, poor boy, wonder how much he was traumatized after it.
My two fave hermits who deserve love, happiness, unicorns, dinosaurs, chocolates and reasons to come out of their cave and show their faces at least one time every month TT
Nope, it was Angels and Demons (or something like that).
WEEKEND!!!! AND EUROVISIOOOOOON NIGHT!!!!!!!!
Have a great time, hope everything is fine with you :)

Chase You/Chase Me (Pt. 4)
Part 4: The truth will never lie to me
Catch up here: Series Masterlist
Chapter Summary: Trapped in a conference, Gabe and Alex bask in the afterglow of their interrupted moment by the lake. But before Alex can fully comprehend how she felt, she unravels a truth that may cease the chase altogether.
Book/Pairing: Choices - Laws of Attraction / Gabe Ricci x MC (Alex Keating)
Words: 1.8k+
Rating/Warnings: Mature (16+) / alcohol consumption, language, implied sexual content. Reader discretion advised.
Author's Notes: Surprise! Yep, it's an early release! I made revisions to fit the ongoing narrative and ended up breaking it down into two parts. Also, this series may span longer than I originally intended it to be, not wanting to rush things. It will probably extend until Part 7, depending on what happens at the finale. I do hope you'll still stick around. If not, I'll totally understand. 😉
Disclaimer: Most of the characters as well as some dialogue belong to Pixelberry. I am merely borrowing them.
Tumblr media
Late night, Boston
Shoe laces, cool wind and the darkness of the forest enveloping them. His breath shuddering with how close her lips was. His throat running dry.
Wanting, longing.
Just a little taste to find out how intoxicatingly delicious those cherry lips would be in his mouth and to feel the heat of her body against his.
And then a splash.
Gabe blinked as he felt ice cold liquid pouring over his crisp white shirt. He wasn't sure if he was having déjà vu.
"Oh, sorry mate," a man standing nearby had bumped into him, making the glass of scotch he was drinking shake and spill into his impeccable suit. He forced down the tasteless curse words forming in his mouth, groaning in frustration at the dissipating sensations from what he had been imagining.
His mind was stuck in an endless loop, replaying the romantic encounter with Alex just the night before. But very much like after Beau's dive into the lake, his consciousness whipped achingly back to reality.
Gabe was leaning on the mobile bar, set in the middle of the conference reception. Did he just lose himself in a daydream like a fool? He wondered, murmuring through his madness.
The time alone with her provided him a glimpse of what could be between them. And oh how euphoric it had been to have her so near, to watch his body respond to her like no other.
It left him just craving for more.
He was lying to himself if he continued to deny that he has feelings for Alex, and how deep he was already in for her. But he knew it wasn't meant to be, at least until after he admits the truth. Until then, he had to pull away.
Easier said than done.
For now, he settled for a view of her, his eyes scoured the room for the subject of his fancy. When he found her, Gabe couldn't stop his smile and the fluttering of his heart, or the warmth growing between his legs.
There she was, in the far side of the room, shining brighter than any star that they had seen in the night sky. Her audience completely captivated as he was with her.
The sight of her in that blue dress swept Gabe back into his fantasies, and how infuriatingly near he was to giving into them. He had to clench his fist around his tumbler, suppressing any trace of his earlier wild thoughts.
Apparently sensing the weight of his gaze, Alex turned to him, their eyes meeting in silent conversation. He watched as she excused herself before making her way towards where he sat.
Half-smiling, Alex's confident expression as she approached him made him swallow hard.
Gabe summoned all his willpower to rein himself in as she got closer. He plastered his usual cocky smile, once again putting up a wall of professionalism. They were in a conference, he reasoned.
"Still watching your wards, old man?" Alex chuckled as she reached a seat beside him.
"Working the room like a pro like that? Very hard to ignore," Gabe interjected, shaking his head. "Had to say Alex, I'm impressed."
"Glad you noticed," she smiled, clearly enjoying the compliment.
"Frankly, you charming the top tier lawyers were hard to miss," he said, with lips quirking into a grin.
"Were you watching the whole time?" she asked.
"Difficult not to, seeing how you're the best-dressed lawyer in the room," he continued, savoring the easy conversation.
She scoffed before turning around, grabbing a napkin from a bartender. Alex offered it to him, pointing at the light stain on his clothes.
He finally muttered a curse, realizing he had been too distracted not to notice the result of the spillage from his own drink. This was one of my best suits.
Gabe almost jumped when Alex started to wipe the front of his suit.
His eyes narrowed, unable to process what was happening. On impulse, he reached out to her, encircling his palms around her wrist. Alex snapped her head up at the touch, the intensity of her gaze enchanting him.
It took all of his strength to break free from it. He cleared his throat and looked away, before grabbing the napkin from her grasp without warning.
It had always been like this. At first, there was this fluidity, a natural attraction between them while they interacted. Then another goddamn minute passes and it all becomes downright complicated.
Gabe wasn't having it.
He briefly shut his eyes closed and released the breath he was holding. When he opened them, he focused his attention on wiping the stain from his jacket, avoiding Alex's questioning gaze. He decided to divert the conversation, robbing her of any opportunity to re-capture him in a trance.
"Don't worry, I don't judge potential partners solely on congeniality. Though I can't speak for Sadie." He then turned and discarded the cloth on the bar. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'll have to speak to a friend who I'm sure will be thrilled to know I'm now a partner."
He finally dared to look at Alex with almost apologetic eyes, before swiftly walking away towards a sea of unfamiliar faces.
Alex was left gaping at his hasty departure, uncertain how it all went south so quickly. She wanted to grab his arm and pull him to her so badly, to pick things up from where they left off last night. From that moment when his lips was inches away from taking hers, before they were interrupted.
Her body ached to be near him. Then again, that's not how she usually operates, so she let him be.
She had never thought her idol was such a tease. Or perhaps, traditional? Alex snickered. Oh how I'll make you beg, Gabriel Ricci. She exhaled, the sultry thought of the man on his knees in front of her suddenly hiking up the temperature in the room. Alex had to fan herself to cool down.
Along with the idea of finally spending some alone time together, conjuring the image of waking up beside Gabe excited her. Well, if ever this chase between them actually culminates to something.
But why was she following this trail of thought? In all her conquests, she had never stayed for what came after. She had that with Julian, and look how that ended. For her, it was always just for the fun. So why does she suddenly liked the notion with Gabe? She shuddered. Ugh, weird.
Maybe it's because it's taking the long game with him? Alex didn't want to know.
Leaving that for now, she resorted to ordering another shot of patron to drown the remnants of her heated thoughts. On her third glass, Alex heard a familiar voice ordering a shot of bourbon. She swiveled towards it and caught sight of Lina Reyes, the opposing lawyer from the Willow case.
"Fancy meeting you here," Alex smiled lazily, remembering how temptingly attractive she was. She also recalled the offer of a hook-up, which she politely declined out of courtesy.
But now, seems like she's getting another chance. And with Gabe being annoyingly hard to get, Alex had to have fun somewhere else. It's not like she and Gabe was committed, right?
Lina scooted closer to her, smelling of a heady mix of alcohol. "Speaking of fancy, damn. You look more incredible than I can remember, Alex," she teased, provocatively arching her brows at her.
Alex quickly picked up Lina's attempt to flirt, stoking her bruised ego. "Gotta be dressed to impress, right?" she waved her fingers as if in curtsy. "Enjoying the conference?"
"At this point, things tend to devolve quickly. But I do plan to have a nightcap back in my room," Lina smirked, Alex feeling the heel of velvet pumps brushing along her bare leg. "Maybe you could join me?"
The woman wasn't exactly subtle, though Alex had to give props to her for her confidence. She liked that in anyone. So Alex returned the gesture, letting her fingers hover an inch over her arm while batting her eyelashes. Two can play that game.
"I think we should stay here."
Wait, what? Did she just say no? Subconsciously? Did hell just freeze over? Or did her brain left her head?
Both women blinked, unable to determine who's more mortified between them. They were both quiet, until Lina broke the awkwardness by a chuckle.
"Had to try, didn't expect I'd be turned down twice," she said consuming the rest of her drink in one gulp. "Worth it though." she shrugged, ordering another round for herself.
Alex struggled to compose herself, brows furrowed in confusion by how that went down.
"Oh don't be so bothered, you're not my first rodeo." Lina poked at her jokingly, clearing up the air. Alex thanked her, and the conversation went smoothly from there.
Several more drinks in, the two women chatted on, venturing into a variety of topics in law and in love. It didn't take long before Lina started to slur in her words, to which Alex found amusing.
"Looks like someone didn't pace herself," she observed as she sipped her cocktail.
"Ah don't mind me, had to cleanse my palate after all the boring sessions earlier," Lina toasted her glass on hers, wobbling as she shifted to face her. "We are a rare breed, us fighters," she leaned towards Alex, lowering her voice to a whisper. "We like-minded women should just stick together, you know?"
Alex was relieved she turned her down the second time. Barely listening to her, she started to drift off as Lina continued rambling on, turning around to face the crowds as her eyes tried to locate that handsome man. Alex smirked when she found Gabe's sexy outline.
"Lot of ungrateful dipshits being freed from prison, even after we work our asses off proving they deserved an earlier release. Khan, Kozlowski, those celebrities involved with the Ivy League admission scandal? Hell, even small town criminal Cornell was released in the last five years alone!"
And with that last statement, Alex froze. "Say that again?"
Confused, Lina stuttered as if she can't remember what she was saying. To Alex's annoyance, she went silent, apparent that more humiliation was on the way. Lina abruptly stood, covering her mouth with her hand as she sprinted to the bathroom. Alex let her pass.
Assured that she'll be fine with her colleagues flanking her, Alex started to obsess over Lina's last sentence.
Was that just the patron? Or am I getting too drunk and starting to hear things? She asked herself, bewildered at how randomly Lina mentioned a Cornell.
With an exasperated sigh, she decided it wouldn't hurt to check. She pulled out her phone from her purse and fired up a search engine, where she typed in the godforsaken name. Alex tapped enter.
As soon as the results loaded, she felt the world crumble beneath her.
No, no, no, no, no. This fucking didn't happen.
She clicked on one of the articles from a local news outlet. The picture beneath the headline shoving her nightmares front and center. There it was, the title written in bold stated loud and clear: Cornell Son Gets Early Release.
Alex bit her lip as she fought to gather herself together, speed reading through the article. This was definitely a surprise, but what really got her reeling was the figure of a man walking behind Maximilian. She'd pick up who that was from anywhere within a mile radius.
Alex tried to keep herself rational, but the shock rippled through her, enough to shake off the alcohol in her system. And why did her stomach churned like she was punched in the gut a hundred times over? Why did she felt fucking betrayed?
Unexpectedly, she knew it wasn't discovering Cornell was now walking freely in the streets.
Deep down, Alex was aware it was because Gabe Ricci was involved. Either way, it looks like her high and mighty boss has some explaining to do.
Her blood boiled, a myriad of questions went through her mind. Resolute, she wanted those damn questions answered. Tonight.
She downed her drink and slammed the empty glass on the bar, sending a text to draw Gabe's attention.
She looked over where he stood, watching the frown in his face as he read her message. She clicked her head, beckoning him outside.
Even he can't fathom the fire storm that was about to come his way.

i saw your list for the r6 boys and can i just say, you have impeccable taste!!! and gosh i've been scrolling through your blog for a while now. i love everything you write!! for my request: i'd love any general jager relationship headcanons if you've got any! love ya!
I- 🥺💕 Gosh darn y’all are so dang sweet like honey😭 Jager is my baby, something about him is so precious even though he’s like what? 38? But I digress😂 Also listening to lana Del Rey while writing this is a whole other ball game
💖For sure Marius is tinkerer kind of person. Beside the house he has his own little place where he can make his gadgets and just mess around. Although sometimes he forgets and leaves them in the house, which makes you walk over to his shed standing there in the doorframe watching him panic because he “lost” said object. Marius will chuckle and give a quick kiss before taking his gadget back and offer you a place if you would like to stay
💖Sometimes the both of you with be out there goofing off doing who knows what. But honestly, he loves that you wanna be out there with him. He‘s a person that loves to spend quality time with somebody and he wouldn’t trade it for the world. And if you love to tinker as much as him? You better bet that is where you’ll mostly likely be all day, possibly all week depending of the project.
💖Jager isn’t necessarily quiet as some people think he is. He picks and chooses who he wants to associate with, you just happened to be the winner. However, in the beginning he was a very shy bean. His voice softer than usual and a lot more fidgety when defending with you.
💖Even though he loves quality time, he also loves physical affection too! At night depending on how his day went, jager is very much cuddly. He doesn’t care if he’s big or small, he just wants to be near and touching you.
💖Marius is a bit goofy. He has his moments. Isn’t the best dancer but will be cheesy and slow dance with you.
💖Typically Jager calls you libeling. It’s cliché I know, but he thinks it just fits, well you. He isn’t really all about the whole cutesy nicknames, but will throw maybe one or two out of the blue. Yeah he’s a bit shy near you, he’s trying, really trying.
💖Some days are rough and can easily be known by the look in his brown eyes. Pulling him into a hug is the easiest way to fix it. Just to feel you wrap yourself around him is good enough to release the tension he was feeling.
💖Loves to cuddle on the couch. To be all snuggled up on the couch with blankets over on top along with snacks with a good movie playing. He’d do anything to be there.
💖What always makes smile is when you’re laying on the couch and open up the blanket to him so he can crawl under with you. (I’ve seen too many videos of this and it’s so dang cute)
💖Sometimes he’ll speak German instead of English. If you understand German than no Biggie! However if you don’, he’ll apologize and restate what he said so you can understand. Of course with him speaking another language, he’d be over the moon if you took it upon yourself to learn to speak as well as write.
💖When he has to leave early, jager will leave a small yet adorable note by the bed saying he’ll be home later. He hates to worry others and makes sure you know what’s going on when he’s not around. There’s always a heart on top of the note and at the very end.
💖Remember when I said he sometimes leaves his gadgets and can’t for the life of them think of where it is? He’ll do that sometimes with his helmet as well. There’s just too much going on up in his head because of all the projects he’s constantly thinking about and the new ideas. He swears he has no idea how he’s managed to live without you. Always making sure he has the things he needs and perocially bring him food because he forgets to eat when tinkering.

A/N: “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?” by Rod Stewart is both the best and worst song ever written. I don’t make the rules. I also don’t know how this got so long?
💿
When Niki unlocks the door to your flat he isn't expecting to hear the obnoxiously loud giggles from the other side. You had given him a key to your place shortly after you got engaged. Neither of you had any qualms about moving in with each other before the actual wedding, but you didn't want to give your parents a heart attack. Even so, half your belongings were at his place already.
Opening your front door he sees you and Elena on the couch, whispering and tittering with each other. It takes you a second to notice him standing in the doorway. "Niki! You're home early!"
"Actually," Niki checks his watch, "I'm more than an hour late." He'd had business in the city, so you both planned for him to come by afterwards. That being said, it was going on quarter past 9.
"Oh! Didn't even notice." Both you and Elena snort in laughter, hands flying up to cover your grins. Your exceedingly chipper attitude and flushed cheeks confuse him before he spots the empty wine bottle on the table next to you. Ah - one of those nights. "We were just talking about you!"
"All good things I hope," he says as he takes off his shoes and hangs his coat.
Elena leans in to whisper something conspiratorially to you. Niki is unable to make out what she's said. Based on the reaction and the snickers you give he figures it is something overtly sexual in nature.
She hops up from the couch. "I'd better get going, my sister should be here by now anyway." She leans in to give you a wet kiss on the cheek. On her way to the door she pulls Niki in for a fairly one-sided hug. "Have fun you crazy kids! Don't do anything I wouldn't do!" She tossed over her shoulder, shutting the door.
Niki rifled through the fridge, finding himself ingredients to make a sandwich. "So," he began. "How many glasses have you had?"
"Whyyy do you wanna know?" you drawled out, eyes squinting. The back of the couch makes a good place to rest your chin as you watch him move around the kitchen.
"Because. I want to know how in for it I am tonight." His tone is light, joking even as he looks up at you across the room.
You shrug dramatically. "Just three… or four, maybe."
"Ah," he nods to himself and picks up his sandwich.
It wasn't often you drank this much, but when you did it was always an interesting time. You had only gotten drunk a handful of times since he'd known you, that is, if you could even call it that; you were definitely cognizant of what you were doing. If anything you were just looser than usual thanks to the help of the liquor. Any other person would likely be blitzed after four glasses; you’d told him it was something about being part Scottish that helped you hold your own. Normally Niki couldn't stand when people drank too much. There was something endearing about you though when you got like this. He should've been beyond annoyed, but instead he always found it rather funny.
"And what did you and Elena talk about before I got home?" Home. He liked the sound of being home with you.
"I may have let slip about a certain...ah… incident with the Ferrari…" you finish with a large swallow of wine.
You had an incident with the Ferrari? Niki doesn't remember you being around the car without him. His brow furrows. "What incident?"
"You know…" you wiggle your hands back and forth, gesturing between you. A hiccup punctuates the brief silence.
His concern grows at your lack of answer. "If I knew I wouldn't be asking, liebe."
You let out an overdramatic huff. "Niki!” his name drawn out like a whiny child, “Christ I told her about the sex!"
His eyebrows met his hairline. That incident. He wasn't exactly happy with Elena being privy to that aspect of his life but he figures it could be a lot worse. "Which time..?" he mutters offhandedly to himself.
You jump up, nearly tripping on a fallen blanket and almost sloshing your wine on to the carpet. Catching him next to the couch you push your finger to his uneven lips. "It's alrigh’ though it's our little secret, shhh." You even attempted to wink at him.
Niki grunts in lieu of a chuckle. It's going to be one of those nights.
“Oh! I almos’ forgot!” You spin on your heel and head to your record player. "Look what I bought!" You hold up a new album - a mix of recent top hits. Niki busies himself getting comfortable on the couch while you place the record on the player, cranking the volume.
He finishes his dinner while you groove to the music, wine glass dangling from your fingertips. Your singing is decent, despite the wine in your system. Niki is content to let you have your fun, he even recognized some of the songs from the radio station you played in the car. You are a terrible dancer though, he laughs to himself. He supposes he can’t dance much better himself, really.
A new song began; its funky bass line and smooth rhythm exciting. You threw back your head and released a throaty chuckle. Swaying your hips side to side, you saunter over to Niki. He watches as you shimmy your shoulders to the beat; pointing your finger at him as you move. When the chorus begins you sing along in a sultry voice, hands raised to the ceiling, wiggling your hips towards the floor. You give your best attempt at bedroom eyes as you sing and dance for him.
"If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
Come on, sugar, tell me so.”
Niki chews his bottom lip in amusement as you dance. Seeing your glass almost slip from your loose grip, he leans out and plucks it from your fingers. You hardly notice the absence, continuing your performance.
“If you really need me, just reach out and touch me
Come on, honey, tell me so."
Looking at your fiance over your shoulder, you begin to unbutton your shirt, sliding the open collar over your arms to hang on your elbows. The tops of your breasts exposed, you shake your ass to the music in his direction.
Niki rubs his thumb across his mouth to quell his smirk. “What are you doing, schatz?” It took him a few more seconds to break his eyes away from your uncovered skin as he asked.
You hum, “what’s it look like I’m doin’?”
“Like you’re trying to seduce me or some bullshit.” He can’t hide the amusement in his tone.
“Is it workin’?” You don’t stop moving.
Niki will admit you are oddly sexy right now, even with your horrible dancing and overexaggerated singing. Your breasts are nearly falling out of your brassier as you dance and there is a flush to your skin that reminds him of when you make love. But he just cannot get past how utterly ridiculous you look - and what the hell is this song?
"If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
Come on, honey, tell me so.
If you really need me, just reach out and touch me
Come on, sugar, tell me so.”
You pull the sleeves from your arms and toss the garment at him with a waggle of your brows. “Do you Niki? Do you think I’m sexy?”
“Of course.” He licks his lips, deciding to play along with your little game. His resolve not to laugh would soon crack.
“Alright then.” You slide your hands up the skin of your torso. Your legs do little kicks as you walk to the beat, gyrating your pelvis in a circle.
Niki can tell you are getting tired by how your movements slow towards the end of the song. Here comes the crash.
With the last notes of the song you fall into his lap, his arms bracing your descent. You sigh, your breathing labored from the dancing and alcohol. A low hum vibrates in your throat as you make yourself comfortable draped over him. His fingers leave indents where they hold around the bare skin of your waist. “Was it good?” You trail your fingers up his chest and look up at him from under your lashes.
“What, liebe?”
“Are you sedued… se.. seduced?” you correct.
Niki nods to appease you and your efforts. “Hmm, very much.”
You nuzzle into his neck, his cologne and the scent of motor oil making your head spin. “Good… think I need you…”
Softly, Niki says “and I think you need to go to bed.” You nod as enthusiastically as you can manage in your current state, understanding him as wanting to take you to bed. He lifts you in his arms bridal style, walking you to the bedroom.
Placing you in bed and pulling the covers to your chin, you don’t have the energy to protest when he doesn't join you. When Niki returns from the bathroom in his own sleepwear not two minutes later you are already snoring. He lets out a gentle chuckle before joining you in bed to sleep.

Quidditch camp (part 2) | Fred Weasley x Reader
Summary: You and Fred attend quidditch camp like every summer, but, this year, there’s been a mistake in the cabin and rooming situations. In other words, they’re short of bed and you and Fred will have to share.
Pairing: Fred Weasley x Reader
Word count: 1800
-
Tumblr media
You hadn't talked to - or even looked at - Fred since the kiss.
Once you pulled away from the kiss, you had made a beeline for the bathroom, no longer caring that there was no hot water. A cold shower would do you good - and it was apparently very beneficial for the skin.
Anything to not be in the same room as him.
At supper, you sat with Angelina and Katie. You talked about the afternoon training session, which will cause your legs to ache in the morning and the latest gossip going around in the girls' cabin. Apparently, a girl had snuck into Cedric Diggory's cabin last night - according to Angelina the suspect was Cho Chang - and Madam Hooch was furious.
Most importantly, you didn't tell them what happened at the cabin.
Unconsciously, as Katie was telling you about a new broomstick trick she learned this afternoon, your eyes drifted to the redhead Beater - and the kiss you had shared. The same kiss that had left you wanting more.
Although Fred was three tables away from you, you could still feel his hands on you, strong and firm but not too rough, smell his woody soap and hear the soft sounds of appreciation leaving both your mouths as his warm tongue slipped past your lips and easily found yours. You couldn't believe you had let it escalate to that. At least no clothes had been removed - Fred was just in his shorts, but it still counted.
.
After supper, you left and went to your cabin, faking a headache. You'd usually follow the girls to their cabin and hang out until curfew, but not tonight. You needed time to think and, most importantly, get your mind off of Fred Weasley. Perhaps reading a book would help?
That didn't work for long because the twins walked in the cabin less than twenty minutes later, laughing about some prank they had pulled on one of the younger campers.
''It was brilliant, Freddie! Who knew Chambers could scream that high pitched,'' George said, talking about the prank.
''That image is forever engraved in my mind. Spiders! Spiders! They're gonna get in my pants!'' Fred mocked, imitating Chambers. ''It was hilarious.''
''How did you find so many spiders?''
''There's a whole colony behind Ron's cabin. I lured them into a cup and-'' Fred stopped himself when seeing you on the bed, his mood dropping and changing.
''Hey, Y/N,'' George greeted with a smile, going to his side of the cabin. ''You're here early.''
''I wasn't feeling good. I think it's the heat,'' you explained. If you were consistent with your lie and told everyone the same thing, no one would suspect it was a lie.
''Well, get some rest. Tomorrow's game day. We play against the Phoenixes.'' George fished for his toiletries and slung his towel on his shoulder. ''I'm gonna shower.'' He looked between you and Fred. ''Try to not kill each other while I'm in there, alright?''
Fred sat on his brother's bed and waited until the shower was running to speak. ''So...are we going to talk about it?''
''Talk about what?'' you asked, faking ignorance.
Fred gave you a stern look. ''Don't play that game, Y/L/N.''
You sighed. Forgetting it happened would've been so much simpler.
It's not like the kiss meant anything. It was just that, a kiss. There was no need to make a fuss about it.
''There's nothing to talk about.'' You closed your book and stood, slipping on your shoes and headed outside for a walk.
''Where are you going? I thought you had a headache.''
''I do, but hearing your voice makes it worse.''
.
The match against the Phoenixes was not going well.
McLaggen was sick, therefore he was sitting out this one, which left his keeper position to one of the younger - and less skilled, campers. Much to their bad luck, the young boy had let in five goals in a row. Five! He was probably nervous for his first time on the field, but five goals was a lot of points.
You were scheming the field, trying to spot the snitch, but, much to your luck, the only thing in your vision field was Fred's abs - which was distracting. To your defense, it was Fred's fault for bringing the bottom of his quidditch jersey up to his face to wipe away sweat. The little fucker also purposely flexed his abs a little every time he did it. You tried to look away, but those abs were difficult to look away from. Damn you, Fred Weasley!
Fred's exibitionist manners caused you to miss the snitch and, by the time you had snapped out of your staring, Cho had caught the snitch.
.
''Maybe McLaggen is right. Maybe we should fuck,'' Fred declared after the match, removing his protective gear.
You almost sputtered your water all over yourself. ''Excuse me?'' you asked, hoping you had heard wrong.
''You and me. We should fuck.''
A laugh left your lips. ''Did a bludger hit your head?''
''You were looking at me, weren't you? That's why you didn't see the snitch.'' A smug smile curled on his face. ''Do you have a crush on me, Y/L/N?''
''Wow, that bludger must've hit your head really hard, uh?''
''I'm not going to tell the team...if you accept to have sex with me.''
What?! You couldn't believe what you were hearing.
''Are you blackmailing me into having sex with you? You know that's sextortion, right?''
Fred shook his head. ''No. I'm saying, it's been proven that sex raises endorphins and other hormones that boost mood. Perhaps if we release those good hormones we won't be at each other's throat and picking fights during games...or staring at the other. It would be for the team's sake.''
You scoffed. ''The team's or your dick's sake?''
''I'm being serious, Y/N. Think about it.''
.
The time had been set. Friday, during the campfire, while everyone's attention would be occupied, you and Fred would slip to your shared cabin and...do it.
You didn't want to let it get to your mind, but it was all you could think about throughout the day. While the plan could work and ease the tension between you two, there was a possibility that the sex would go wrong - or be bad - and make things worse inside the team. You were also worried that it would be awkward afterward or that Fred would tell everyone.
During seeker training, you weren't flying your best. Madam Hooch had noticed that your mind was elsewhere and questioned you about it. You lied about not getting enough sleep the night prior and vowed to not stress yourself over tonight.
It was only a big deal if you made it one, right? To prove yourself, you didn't dress special - other than matching your underwear to your bra. It was just Fred, you didn't need to impress him. You didn't even put on lipgloss!
You started with kisses, slowly getting comfortable with each other, but quickly wanting more. His ginger hair smelled of smoke from the campfire and his lips tasted something sweet - roasted marshmallows. You hummed, slipping your hands under his shirt, feeling the curves of his abs and back. Merlin, you loved those.
''Did you lock the door?'' you asked, not wanting to be walked in on by any of your cabin buddies.
Fred hesitated and you sighed, going to lock it yourself.
When you returned to Fred, he had discarded his shirt, leaving him shirtless and you had to hold yourself back from biting your lip. Damn, that body.
Seeing as it was unfair that he was the only one who had taken off clothes, Fred helped you take off your top. You should've felt exposed, but it wasn't the first time he saw you in a bra and it wasn't much different than bikini tops, right? But, this bra was a little sexier than the sports bra you usually wore and, by the look Fred was giving you and your body, he didn't hate it.
''Ohh, I didn't know you owned other things than sports bras, Y/L/N,'' he teased, gliding the pad of his finger on the edge of the black lace.
You swatted him and he laughed.
His lips found their way back to yours, hands exploring each other's bodies. You felt the backs of your legs hit his bed and fell back onto it due to a not-so-gentle shove from Fred. You narrowed your eyes, but Fred joined you, crawling on top of you.
Small moans left your lips as he kissed the side of your neck and your hands went to his hair, keeping him there. He was probably going to give you a bruise and it could be a bitch to cover up, but you'll worry about that later.
No. No more kisses. You were running tight on time.
You snapped out of your bubble and pulled Fred off of your neck. If you wanted to be finished before anyone realized you two had vanished from the campfire, you needed to get straight to business and not fool around too much.
Sparing you both some time, you arched your back off of the mattress and unclasped your bra, throwing it somewhere in the room. You took a mental note to pick it up later to not give Oliver another reason to complain about sharing his cabin with a girl.
As you laid there, topless under Fred, the boy couldn't help but stare at your breasts, hunger in his eyes. He bit his lip and covered them both with his large hands, thumb brushing against one of your nipples, watching it harden.
''Weasley! Less ogling, more fucking. We don't have all night.''
.
''If you talk to anyone about this-'' you warned, pulling on your denim shorts and buttoning the button.
Fred emerged from the bathroom, having discarded the proof of your sexual intercouse at the bottom of the trash to cover your tracks. You couldn't let any of the boys see the used condom.
He scoffed. ''Don't flatter yourself, this was nice, but I'd rather no one knows.''
Was he embarrassed of having slept with you? It couldn't be. It was his idea - technically it was McLaggen's - to have sex.
''Because, you know, we'd get in trouble if Madam Hooch found out,'' he continued explaining, slipping on his shirt and running his hand through his hair to fix them.
Yeah, sure. That was the reason.
Everyone knew having sex on campsite was strictly forbidden and had great consequences - aka, sitting out matches - if Madam Hooch found out, but that didn't stop campers from sneaking around and doing it.
''I mean, it was fun, but you're not worth sitting out matches for.''

2021 Summer Painting Challenge: Retrospective
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summer has come to an end, and with it Warboss Tae's 2021 Summer Painting Challenge. That was... a lot of painting, most of which has been collected above. Huge thanks go out to Tae - if you haven't checked out his youtube channel you can do so HERE, as well as to all of the other participants. There were a lot of cool projects, and you can see them all on Tae's discord HERE.
My main goal in participating was to get together a fully painted starter army together. Despite some stumbles along the way I'm happy to say I met that goal, with a small but playable Soulblight Gravelord core units of 20 skeletons, 20 zombies, and 10 dire wolves, a couple elite unit options in the Blood-born and Vargskyr, plus a selection of hero options including a Vampire Lord that I'm quite proud of plus a couple necromancers, not to mention the named character options from Cursed City and the Underworlds Warbands.
Speaking of underworlds, I now have three fully painted warbands to play against my roommate in that game. And I made some progress on the long overdue Ravenguard commission, so that's cool.
More importantly, for the first time since I came up with this paint scheme way back when the Oldhammer Fantasy 8th edition Vamp Counts book was released, I finally have enough painted models to put them all together and have a feel for the overall effect, and yeah, I'm pretty happy with it.
I definitely learned a few things along the way - though as per usual it mostly came from mistakes. Looking at what I learned/screwed up month by month...
JUNE
Pledged - Cursed City, 3 Underworlds Warbands, 4 Sidequests Completed - Everything, though the Sidequests got extra time
June was the only month where I actually met my pledge, despite it being the most ambitious of the pledges by a fair bit. But the pace I set was absolutely unsustainable and I was already crashing by the end. In the future I'll have to set a more realistic pace.
Other things I learned: Don't use your good brush for washes (RIP my favorite brush), you can wash a wet palette in the dishwasher, but only if you take it out before the dry cycle (RIP my palette). I also think I went a bit too excessive on the greens. I want the army overall to be darker so the greens pop more, so moving forward I'm using more black cloth, reserving green cloth for detail bits, and details like gravestones and rope that I painted ghosty greens on the June models are greys and browns after.
On a more positive note, I really liked how the black armor with green highlights turned out on the Crimson Court, and have decided to make that the distinctive feature of vampire models in my army going forward. The process is a pain, and I will eventually have to go back and re-paint the dragon lord's armor to match, but it's worth it.
JULY
Pledged: 10 Zombies, 10 Dire Wolves, Rhino Completed: 10 Zombies, Rhino
I was already crashing hard when July started and ended up spending most of my free time in the early part of the month playing video games. I though I had balanced this out by aiming for a reduced pledge and not committing to daily updates, but a smaller pledge than June was still way too more than I could sustainably handle, and without the daily updates I ended up letting my break run on way too long, plus I was stuck out of town for a week. But while I may have failed my pledge, I still got 10 nice looking zombies done, plus the commission rhino, which is a lot for me, and I was really on a roll going into August.
The main thing I learned is that regular posting does a lot to keep me engaged with the hobby, and that's something I'd like to try to continue after the challenge is done.
AUGUST
Pledged: 10 Skeletons, 5 Blood Knights, 1 piece of terrain Finished: 10 Skeletons, July's Dire Wolves, June's Sidequests
I honestly should have known better that to pledge so much with so much leftover work to do, including the sidequest tutorials that I still needed in order to confirm my project from back in June, but I was on a high and on a roll at the end of July, and I let my ambitions get away from me. And I knew almost immediately that I had made a mistake, just assembling the Blood Knights I could tell that each one of them was going to require more work than most of the heroes I've painted.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the most important thing I learned. The most important thing was that Army Painter brand black primer is SUPER grainy, to the point of obscuring some of the surface texture and details of the models I sprayed it on, which tragically includes the Blood Knights. They weren't quite as badly done by as the poor skeletons, but on such a cool and important unit it's still a bit disheartening.
On a positive note, I learned from the dire wolves that hexwraith flame can be used in my paint scheme to punch up saturation a bit & add a bit of slimy green gore effect that I quite like. At some point I'll have to go back and use it to punch up the zombies & maybe the zombie dragon a bit.
So where do I go from here?
I'm going to be out of town till the middle of next week, but when I do get back I want to keep up the monthly goals with regular update posts. Maybe not every day, but a few times a week at least. But I don't want this to be my only hobby, either. I got games to play, and now that hectic summer vacation schedules have calmed down I've got a family D&D campaign to start running again. Plus some other stuff to work on. So I'm going to try to keep future commitments more manageable. One unit per month sounds about right.
I need to make some more progress on the Raven Guard commission, and I want to save October for something spooky and undead, so for September I think the one unit will be a Raven Guard landspeeder.
I'd also like to actually get to the local store to try to get a game or two in with my newly painted models. If I do, I'll be sure to take some pictures and report back to you on how badly I get thrashed.

FEH — Calendar for Nov/2021 is out + own thoughts and plans
Tumblr media
(Twitter thread)
The calendar for the month is finally out, and we can plan ahead for who/what I want to pull on, as well as look out for other potentially interesting events.
I'll dump my own plans and thoughts as per usual below the cut, feel free to read on.
Banners
I didn't include links and mentions from the leaks' contents, in case you're avoiding those.
From the looks of it, the dates are still the same for my timezone, but I've read that'll change starting next calendar for some months, due to the Daylight Savings.
Anyway, as it turns out, Ryoma was indeed our next Resplendent Hero, he looks good, but I care very little about him, so I didn't make the usual thought post — but Ryoma being the next Resplendent upgrade candidate means that the leak for the whole month is turning out to be true, it's still soon to say it's trustworthy, but I'm assuming it is to motivate myself to keep saving, as there wouldn't be anything of interest coming for the remainder of November.
The only banner I'm worried about is [Heroes with Bonfire], there are 14 sources in the regular pool but only 3 will comprise the banner itself, and among them is Idoun (best girl 💜🙏🏻), if she's there (extremely unlikely doubtfully but who knows), I'll try to aim for at least one merge, otherwise I'm hard skipping this month; I even had to pass up on the other 3 tempting red stones from the monthly refines banner, Summer Tana doesn't need merges right away and I think pulling on her home banner would be best.
There's also yet another {Double Special Heroes} banner coming... what's with I.S. breaking patterns? That should come out every 2 months. 🤨
Anyway, last time we got a rerun for an assortment of seasonals released this year, from the Valentine's banner to the Young Heroes one, the next banner... well, here are my guesses, just what remains of some of the thematics that appeared in the previous one:
Red
→ Duo Young Eirika+Ephraim
→ Bridal Shanna
Blue
→ Bridal Juno
→ Young Lyon
Green
→ Spring Inigo
→ Summer Caspar
Colorless
→ Summer Duo Hilda+Marianne
→ Groom Saul
...
Hm... assuming I got it right, I'd pick colorless, but unlike last time, we'll need to wait two weeks for the banner reveal, maybe less if it's datamined and shared, but as I've expressed before, these banners are [Orb] scavengers, so I'll skip it in the end.
The New Heroes were also leaked, of which none are my interest (again, assuming the leaks are true).
So yeah, gonna save and see what's in store this month.
Events
Just the usual without much of interest.
[Heroes Journey] (three days) and [Pawns of Loki] (two days) will run once like past months, [Røkkr Sieges] is also coming back and starting today, it's a fun game mode with rather acceptable reward value, but I don't have much motivation to aim for the top in my world, I'll just waste whatever [Stamina] and score as well as I can like usual.
We'll get [Limited Hero Battles] soon, perhaps I'll feel inspired to record a video of my own solution of an abyssal map unless it covers Three Houses units, of which I have very little and stand no chance.
Palla and Catria also get their [Bound Hero Battle], since it's the first run, I'm guessing their banner will have Est as the last unit? Minerva would fit too, but not as well. Either way, it reminded me Palla — best Whitewing! — is +9 among my projects, I'm looking forward to finish merging her.
No free unit will get a rerun after Veld until maybe later next month, but we'll get a few new maps and free units, the next New Heroes are also coming early next month, we can expect the next [Feh Channel] by then, to announce the theme for [Book VI], among the usual celebratory stuff and whatever, I'm quite thrilled to find out what's in store.
So... overall?
I think it's an average month without much of interest (not even the themed banners hold much of interest barring the [Bonfire] one), if you've seen the leaks, chances are you won't be as thrilled for which Heroes you'll see later on, and I can see that, specially since now it's gaining credibility so I don't feel the same thrill but I like planning ahead when given the resources... maybe the fodder will be interesting at least? Who knows, but I plan to skip all along.
Anyway, that's it for me, take care and thanks for reading!

“I don't know if anyone has ever been able to appreciate a rock concert as much as I did when I saw Queen at age 7. I knew the order the songs were supposed to be in, the way the stage was supposed to look, and what the band was supposed to do. And everything happened perfectly. Except for that damn mustache. Late summer 1980, I was pestering my mom to take me into town to get candy. She said, "Do you really want to get candy, or would you rather get tickets to see Queen?" I stopped in my tracks and started being the nicest boy you could imagine. I thought maybe she was kidding, but knew she wouldn't kid me about something like that. I guess my dad had already OKd it too. Like Axl Rose once said about Queen: "They meant everything to me." We drove all the way to Omaha to get tickets: they were $9 in advance, or $11 the day of the show if still available (though now I'm not sure how they weren't sold out immediately). I'm still not quite sure why Queen was playing smaller arenas at that point, since I think they had already begun playing stadiums. Finally, September 13 arrived. I was in 2nd grade. Ads had been all over the radio for this concert. One of my baby-sitters and two of her friends rode up with us also, and they went off on their own when we got there. The show was one of those infamous "general admission" things, so our seats depended solely on how early we arrived. I think we got to the arena at about 9 am... almost a full 12 hours before the show actually started (much longer in 7-year-old hours). A single word, "QUEEN", was boldly displayed on the marquee above the many doors where small lines were beginning to form. Excited bands of people were running/gathering everywhere. Queen was one of the biggest five bands in the world at that time: "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was on the charts, The Game had just been released, and "Another One Bites the Dust" was soon-to-be released as a single. We picked one of the lines and got ready for what was indeed halfway dangerous: the growing mob of people ready to run in when the doors would open. This was a big issue of the time, as it was the year before that 11 people were crushed to death at the turnstiles of a Who concert. (An episode of the TV show W.K.R.P. in Cincinnati even focused on this.) People were starting to press onto the transparent doors trying to look inside, when suddenly there was the sound of tires screeching from the street: a white limousine honked twice and sped around the corner toward the other side of the arena, and was gone within seconds. The "big kids" screamed and ran after it; I was too small to do this, but we got better places in line! When everyone came back, they said they actually saw Freddie and John get out of it and be scuffled into the building before getting attacked by the mob of people. In the meantime, others around us were starting to talk to my mom. Two of them were a man and a lady who were apparently on date, and they ended up even staying by and sitting by us through the show. Some other people also offered to kind of stay around my mom and I to make sure I'd be safe on the way in. A couple of times, a big fat drunk guy yelled out, "Who's your favorite group?" and of course everyone yelled "Queen!"
Now people were beginning to bang on the doors of the entrance. I think the doors finally opened at around 11 am. When they did, we and other people from several sides of the arena moved in, towards those coming in from other doors on opposite sides: within seconds, everyone had funneled from outside to stopping cold in the lobby, having basically run into each other. This is exactly where everyone stayed for the next two hours. A human shield of several people were intact around my mom and I preventing my being crushed... and all I could see for two hours were a bunch of butts! Once in awhile someone would try and lift me up to see all the people. From the distance, the drunk guy again repeated the "Who's your favorite band?" line a couple of times, realizing that more people could hear him now that he was indoors and echoing, and everyone gave the appropriate response. By the fifth time, only the drunk people were responding to him, and by the tenth time people were laughing and moaning. Every so often, some loud music would come out of the arena like a band was tuning-up, but it wasn't Queen music so everyone figured it was just the opening act. At 1 pm, the turnstiles were finally opened. I was kind of keeping my guard around me as everyone pressed forward, and everything was moving faster the closer we got, but by surveying the area I thought I'd be safe. I had my ticket in my hand. The guy from the couple was going to try and enter first, then me, and then my mom. When I got to the turnstiles, my mom and the guy grabbed my arms on both sides and completely hoisted me over. A surprised old man tore my ticket while I was in mid-air. Suddenly, we were standing relatively calmly inside: the difficult part was over, and we were at least safe from here on out. People were still running everywhere and screaming, but the hallways were pretty big so it wasn't too dangerous as long as we stayed toward the edge. Most people were still outside, since we were somewhat early. An older 12-year-old tore around the corner, then his '70s-style tennis shoes screeched against the floor and he fell down for a second as he decided to which way to go. We knew we were sort of on a mission to walk fast toward a balcony and just get seats instead of wandering around indecisively like others. We went straight up toward the second level balcony, as others ran the opposite way down to the main floor. My mom and I and the people we'd befriended walked right next to the wall, and I pressed against it while just a few feet away scattered groups of people would sometimes run by full-speed. I would have wanted to be on the main floor, but my mom had previously explained to me how, unless we were in the balcony, we would have to actually stand through the whole show (there weren't any chairs on the main floor) and would hardly be able to see anything. Plus, along with the horror stories of people running in at the beginning of a rock concert, I had also heard how people supposedly got crushed to death against the stage... so sitting in the balcony was just fine with me. We got two seats in the front of the second balcony, just by the railing to the balcony below. We were on the right side of the arena, about halfway back, so we couldn't complain. Now, I knew this was the beginning of the biggest wait: sitting in the same spot from 1 in the afternoon to about 9 at night.
The main parts of the stage I liked (from viewing the pictures in my Live Killers album) were intact: the steps were lined with lights under Roger's drums, and middle of the main stage had a small plank stage that stuck out for Freddie to walk on, where the crowd could touch him but not too easily. Most of the instruments, and all of Roger's drum set, were covered in giant sheets of plastic. I'd never seen such big speakers; I had a flashback when I saw the black and white photo to the right because that's what they looked like with the house lights up. Throughout the afternoon, the lights in the arena would go out, then come back on... like we were being teased. Finally when it was about time for the opening band, the lights went off longer than usual and the band took the stage. The opening band was someone we had never heard of, and my mom and I both can't even remember who it was now (two people have e-mailed me saying it was a band called "Dakota"). I don't think they had any hits, and then apparently disappeared soon after. The crowd tolerated the first two or three songs. Then, every song ended with "Just one more song!" much to the audience's vocal dismay. I went on a trip to the bathroom, and they were still playing when I came back. Then they left. Ten minutes later, they came back and said "Just one more song!" and I think they played three. People were yelling, "We want Queen!" People were getting harsh to the point it was just uncomfortable even seeing the band on the stage. Everyone cheered when they left. The lights came back on. Another two hours. Just seeing them walk across the stage would have been enough for me, so at that age I really couldn't comprehend being in their presence for a whole two-hour concert. This wait was easier though because every second we knew the show could start. Seeing Queen still seemed like it was too good to be true, like some act of God would occur just before the show to prevent it. Then, the lights went out. There's no feeling like the wait in total darkness just before a Queen concert. It was 10 minutes of black and the loudest screaming I'd ever heard. I remember it was "scary" and so I think Brian might have also been playing the weeping guitar sound like the beginning of the We Will Rock You concert video. It was a good scary feeling though, like going up the first hill of a roller coaster. After several minutes of intense darkness and the crowd screaming, when I felt like my ears didn't have room for any more sound to enter (though I loved it), the even louder sound of thunder clapped across the arena with an incredibly blinding light. I could see everyone on the main floor have to turn completely around in unison toward the back of the arena because the lights were so bright. I kept trying to glance at the stage to see what was happening, but it was too bright to see anything... plus, in between the flashes, it was too dark to see anything. It was sort of an unnerving state, being totally blinded in that big of a place with that many people, and coming to the realizaton that it would be unthinkable to actually move around and that we were basically helpless. I was holding my mom's hand. Queen had the whole crowd paralyzed in their tracks before the show even began.
I'm not sure if the lights all rose up like in the We Will Rock You video or not (since we couldn't see), or if they were already raised because of the opening band. Eventually the thunder and noise turned to music. Finally, through my wincing, Freddie Mercury was suddenly in front of my own little eyes on the front extended stage in all the smoke. I'd never even seen a celebrity in person before, much less my idol at the time. I didn't think they would open with the fast version of "We Will Rock You" for some reason, since that's at the beginning of the Live Killers album and I thought they would want to do something different, but was surprised that they opened with a non-Queen song: "Jailhouse Rock". The stage looked similar to that in the We Will Rock You concert video, with the smaller panels of lights replacing the single giant panel from previous tours; however, I'm certain there was at least another entire, higher level of moving lights (not only from seeing them at the concert, but also looking at the pictures for years afterwards). The lights in the We Will Rock You video seem extremely cut-back. Instead of one row of panels of lights across the back of the stage, the panels were all over the place and the ones above the band moved straight up and down on poles and tilted back and forth. There were also little men somehow sitting amongst the panels who manually operated at least a dozen spotlights, and more guys doing this from a small section hanging down from the ceiling at the middle of the arena. Since the spotlights were directed from the top of the arena, there wasn't a big bulky spotlight booth in the middle of the main floor taking up space, and the audio booth was placed along the right side of the arena (down not to far from us) so it wasn't in anyone's way. In the darkness between a lot of the songs, flashlights darted around the stage... we couldn't figure out if it was the band or engineers setting things up. Thankfully, no one came out on stage before the show to announce the band (I've always thought this is really cheesy). Freddie had on those red leather pants with the blue knee-pads... and, unfortunately, that ugly mustache! "What do you think about my new mustache?" Freddie asked. (Mixed applause.) "Some people don't like it, but I just say 'fu** 'em.'" (Crowd goes wild.). Freddie drank some water, then tossed the rest out onto the crowd along with his cup. He tossed his tambourine out later, and I couldn't imagine what it would actually be like to touch it. Freddie also had that long silver microphone stand that he always danced around with in the videos. He was running all over the place; one second he was on the plank at our side of the arena, the next at the other side. The three high school girls who rode up with us were excited because when he went to the end of one of the planks he ended up level and close to them in the balcony (but upset because, had one not been on crutches, they would have stayed on the main floor where Freddie tossed his tambourine!). Once or twice I remember looking into the middle of the arena and some kind of explosion occurred in mid-air (apparently launched from the lighting duct at the top of the arena). There weren't that many lighters in the audience, but instead everyone was using those green glow-sticks that come out around Halloween (I think these were new at the time). The audience kept throwing their green glow sticks up on the stage until at times it was covered, and more than once Brian kicked off some back into the audience (and I think he might have been getting upset but I'm not sure!).
There were numerous parts of the show I knew had to be there... and they all were. The first was the "scary" sound effects and section of "Get Down, Make Love", where Queen showed off their lights. (At that age, I thought the erotic sound effects were simply supposed to represent the monster breaking-in on the cover of News of the World). Smoke shrouded the band, as the panels of lights took over and moved around to the audience's ooohs and aaahs. My mom and I were trying to figure out what was on Roger's bass drum, since it didn't look like an album cover; it turned out to be the white "face" design, also in the We Will Rock You video. Back then, concerts didn't have big video screens, so we just had to use the binoculars that we'd brought. Some spotlights were gathering on Freddie and Brian as they went to sit on two stools toward the right of the stage, and my mom got excited because we knew "Love of My Life" was coming. Freddie announced, "This is our first time in Omaha... " as the song started, and got the crowd to sing along like on the Live Killers album. Meanwhile, I had become a source of info for those around who wanted to know what the songs were; every time a new song would start, people would ask me what it was! I really don't know if anyone has ever actually been able to appreciate a concert as much as I did that night: I was only 7, but had every album except the first two, and knew every song they played except maybe two or three. But what's interesting is how fans often wish they could experience how a "classic" band was 20 years prior... and this is strangely how I felt I was experiencing the show, because at my age it seemed like Queen had been around 20 years. There were parts of the show, including the stage design, that were "legendary" to me, but were only 2-3 years old in reality. Now, 20 years later, they're legendary to everyone else. Periodically, the guy next to me changed the tape in his "hidden" tape recorder. We knew the show was close to the end when "Bohemian Rhapsody" began. Everyone clapped to the pre-recorded opera section, and as the Live Killers liner notes say: "The audience and the lights take care of the rest." The crowd went nuts when Roger hit the famous gong at the end.
I think there were two or three more songs, and then everything went black for about 10 minutes. Could it be that they were actually not going to play the standard "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions/God Save the Queen" closing? The house lights may have even come on for awhile, then went back off. A few people were starting to leave, and I kept telling my mom that they had to end the concert that way, because that's the only way a Queen concert ends... but then even I was having doubts. Finally, the yellow lights around the gong all turned on, pointing directly on Roger, who started the drums of "We Will Rock You" and everyone stomped their feet and clapped. Of course "We Are the Champions" was next, and Freddie shook some of the hands flailing in front of the stage while singing it. I remember there was one hand jumping up and down that never got shook! Freddie bent his neck way back when he sang "... of the world!" at the very end like I knew he was supposed to from videos on TV, and we hoped for another song but knew that was probably going to be it. A grand finale of Queen's famous pyrotechnics began shooting everywhere from the stage, the lights were all moving around, and everyone was jumping all over in the aisles. Soon the pre-recorded Night at the Opera version of "God Save the Queen" did begin playing...but, nobody really sang to it since this is America and no one knows the words! At this point, I tried to make sure I was truly fathoming what it was like to actually see the band members in front of me since they'd be gone soon. Freddie was still dancing around and danced out a little door behind the drums, and the rest of the band followed one-by-one, with John being last as he waved to everybody one last time. The lights flickered and moved some more to the rest of the song, slowly going dark along with the rest of the arena, with the final rise of the crowd's applause. Perfect. Except for that damn mustache. We walked down what seemed like endless spiraling stairs on the way out...extremely slowly this time. My ears had that weird "ringing" feeling like everyone said I'd have, but that I'd never experienced before. Spotlights were panning the sky outside. We said goodbye to the couple we'd been with during the show. A guy in his late 20s started talking to us on the long way out; he laughed and told me how he'd also had to argue with his mom who said Queen would never come to Omaha. My mom asked him if he thought I'd even remember the whole thing since I was so little. He looked down at me, saw my grin from ear-to-ear, and said, "He'll never forget this."” - Jim
