Day 1 - 100 Albums - Deacon Blue - ‘Raintown’ - 1987, Deacon Blue’s debut album ‘Raintown’ possibly one of my favourite records of all time, which is such a big statement as music is so personal to different people. I was 19, on March 31st, 1988, and I went to see them at the London Town and Country Club, in Kentish Town. I went on my own, on the Tube, I loved it the concert was one of the best I have ever attended. I was in awe at f the surroundings, the band, the fans, the ‘Raintown’ material and newer tracks from their upcoming second album, ‘When the World knows your Name’. It came alive, animated to a new level, erupted my world and introduced me to the original line up spear headed by Ricky and Lorraine’s compact and harmonious vocals. One reviewer noted ‘It was as if Lorraine had been dancing on wasps, the energy and passion with which she flung her tambourine around’. Every track on ‘Raintown’ is a mini masterpiece. From the opening refrain of ‘Born in a Storm, the prelude to the rain soaked streets of Glasgow, the struggles of urban life and the inner city, to the last lament of ‘Town to be Blamed’. You can just imagine the wind swirling around the church depicted in the song. Simply Iconic. This brilliant debut peaked at No14 in the UK Album Charts, and featured four singles, ‘Loaded’, ‘Chocolate Girl’, ‘When will you ( make my phone ring?)’ and the live favourite and anthem ‘Dignity’ which was the highest charting single from that album at No20, reissued from the ‘Your Town’ Greatest Hits collection. Truly a magnificent album. With twelve UK Top 40 Singles and twoNo1 Albums they may yet appear in this Top 100 rundown. In making the new LP, PG.LOST opted to keep it simple and follow their gut. “On the previous records we have always tried to make it very basic and clean when it comes to production, not too many overdubs or add-ons,” reveals bassist Kristian Karlsson. “This time was more about not thinking about that at all. We don’t try to over analyse our records– it always starts with one or two songs and they often set the mood of the rest of the writing process.I think this album has more layers to it– you hear new things every time you listen. We’re really looking forward to hearing what the listeners think.” Kicking off with a blossoming dark ambient passage on the title track, an ascendant guitar/synth part builds tension until final release is achieved with a massive chorus, waves of eye-opening guitars and elephantine tribal drums. It’s emblematic of the album as a whole– massive in scope and even larger in sound, Oscillate is the true definition of its title with incredibly tense swells to the point of collapse leading to a slow but pensive disintegration. And again. And again.
