I’m quite curious to know who the “dangerous friends” who made Luna’s attire might be…and the special properties with which said garments could be imbued, since Vanitas emphasizes that Amelia should use a particular type of fabric to “mend the gloves and the cloak.” 🤔
Tumblr media
Back in Mémoire 49, Luna mentions that “families of alchemists and magicians” tend to have amicable relationships with vampires; perhaps the clothes were provided by one such group of mortals?

"I am fed up with Luna's prounouns's discourse saying the fandom and the character misgender them. It's clear that Luna being non gendered as more to do with the plot than gender identity since them being neither male or female allows them to fill the lack of fatherfigure for Misha and the lack of mother figure for Vanitas. This keeps reminding me of stupid discourse just because the translation uses them to translate the neutral pronouns in jpn that can be used in any context. Headcanons are fine, but don't push it please and in Luna's case, it's clear you can refer to her as a she or he or they because they are intented to be seen as that : a creature whose identity depends on how they are perceived."

I just talked about this on Twitter but —
You ever think about how interesting it is that Vanitas (and the Vampire of the Blue Moon) are accented with silver (including the hourglass charm in the manga version), which is supposed to be a weakness for vampires in most vampiric lore.
Silver is often used as a symbol of purity which often makes it an effective tool in lore against many supernatural beings (such as vampires, werewolves, undead, etc.) and it was considered a naturally occurring solution to getting rid of these problems. That’s why silver bullets work on werewolves and the undead can be kept back with silver.
With vampires, silver is said to burn and paralyze them in a lot of lore. Despite its frequency the actual effectiveness of silver on vampires can range from being enough to kill them from the burning purity of the metal to effects similar to a bad allergic reaction. Overall, the effects are not as bad as sunlight but can still be effective to deter them.
Most commonly, silver was used to bind and entrap vampires until they could be killed with other means (if the silver itself isn’t enough). A convenient trap and a way to hurt them all in one.
Similarly, silver is also why vampires often wouldn’t reflect in mirrors due to it being used as the base of a mirror’s reflective properties. Basically, they were too “impure” to show on the “pure” metal.
I say all this because I wonder if these properties are why Luna, Vanitas, and even Misha have silver accents and accessories. Because with their association with the Blue Moon, they’re supposed to be the destruction of vampires in the series. Or at least according to their world’s lore.
Because to vampires, silver is deadly.
Bonus:
Also, correct me if I’m wrong but even with all the vampire nobility we’ve seen, while they were other precious metals and jewels, I can’t recall anyone who wore silver. Gold most certainly, and probably what’s meant to be bronze.
But I think silver has been reserved for the Blue Moon Clan.

I DON’T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN: VNC THEORY
TW//mentions of suicide
Tumblr media
Let’s try to understand what Vanitas in itself is. Because I personally don’t believe Luna is the original VOTBM. Vanitas seems more than a name. More than a title.
It is essentially who you become. Now I’m unsure whether Vanitas inherited Luna’s memories. I’m going to assume he did bc the hypnosis he literally placed on himself was to protect more than his backstory.
But look at when Domi assumes he worships the VOTBM, Vanitas is practically APPALLED she even suggested that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we’ve seen his moments spent with Luna and him calling them for aid during the Gevaudan arc. So we know his hatred isn’t aimed at Luna specifically.
Where am I going with this? First of all, Vanitas will not corrupted the same way Misha was. Because he inherited the name Vanitas, he will slowly forget his true self and pretty much become the VOTBM. Which is where the hate comes in bc Vanitas wants to keep his humanity to the bitter end. Here is the key thing to note. Vanitas’ “revenge” is not only to find who stole Luna’s true name but also this⬇️
Tumblr media
He wants to erase the existence of the VOTBM completely. Memories and all. I think by the end we’ll find out who corrupted Luna. But I’m not sure if Vanitas will carry out this other wish himself. May I also remind you Noé is hearing all of this.
And if we also can assume that killing ‘Vanitas’ means you inherit/become the new Vanitas, I’m certain you all know where I’m going with this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now here is where my heart breaks.
For this to work, Noé will have to kill him. Inherit all his memories which include VOTBM and enter the same path Vanitas was. And so, to fulfill Vanitas’ revenge before being corrupted himself. He’s gonna end it all.
Noé is going to send every fragment/memory of the VOTBM’s existence, along with him, into oblivion. So he’s writing these memoirs not only for catharsis, not only for the Vanitas he cared about to live on. But also himself. To leave a permanent mark that he was here. Obviously because I love Noé to fucking pieces I kinda don’t want this theory to happen. But I’ve thought about it for a while. There really is no other way. Also if this does happen, bet it happens on a blue moon and Noé turns into purple butterflies.
There is too much butterfly imagery in this series for no reason. Perhaps Noé and Vanitas both do, that would definitely explain this art. Also see how Noé is in the ‘oblivion’ if you will 🙃

Hmm... this one panel explains so much about the economic structure of both human and vampire society. And once again, it goes back to the event that created vampires (and astermite) and the vampires’ fear of the Vampire of the Blue Moon.
The vampires want astermite out of their realm because of its alleged connection to the Vampire of the Blue Moon. The humans take the astermite in exchange for yet unknown goods. The humans became reliant on astermite as a power source, which only comes from areas where humans cannot enter alone. The vampires are also likely reliant on this trade with the humans. It would also explain why the vampires in the most recent chapters were offering work to humans and the vampire slave traders that ended up picking up Noé despite their overall disdain for humans: because they need humans to mine the astermite for them.
It also explains why even a group as fanatical about slaying vampires as the Church has at least until recently mostly at least pretended to comply with the treaty. After all, money talks. And Noé and Vanitas’ little excursion in the chasseurs lair proved that even they are heavily reliant on devices powered by astermite.
Tl:dr: Vampire society likely has the resource curse (à la the real life Gulf States that likely doesn’t produce anything of note other than energy and relies on outsourced labor to even produce that) and human society is completely dependent on an energy source they have no control over. And it’s a recipe for disaster

I REMEMBER what i was going to say. vanitas (character) is also vanitas (concept) and an allegory for a cycle of systematic suffering and abuse that exists haplessly and without purpose. noé right from the start is in denial over the existence of such useless suffering (thinking he can save mina) and continues to deny this by writing the case study of vanitas, his futile attempt to scrape off some meaning from such a bleak allegory. while he can understand that killing vanitas is a form of salvation for him i don’t think that can come to terms with the fact that vanitas did suffer at all. so to write the case study of vanitas, trying to go over the events of their lives together, and trying to piece together vanitas the person he ends up disrespecting his existence altogether, simply by over scrutinizing it. vanitas did not want to be remembered. by saying he wanted to erase the existence of the votbm, he is saying he wants to erase his suffering from this world. what noé does with the case study is essentially immortalize it, because he is selfish, naive, and wants to understand something inscrutable. rather than taking comfort in the fact that vanitas can continue to exist in his memories, like how he will tell him as he dies (i won’t die noé even if i’m no longer here) noé bastardizes these memories and turns them into something almost masturbatory
#also i think thag like noes obsession with vanitas is in part because he is unable to recognize his own suffering#like there are parallels between their stories#having their caregivers die being orphaned like twice and being taken in by child experiments guy number 1 and number 2#and being sexually assaulted multiple times#the difference is that noé is an archiviste. the only thing he knows how to do is be the narrator and witness vanitas (concept/allegory)#from a third perspective. so it’s not just (or even not really) vanitas pain that he’s coping badly with but his own#i started off trying to focus on the allegorical things instead of the literal character things but whatever i’m not fixing it#i got a fucking hot chip in my eye while typing this and have been crying it out since#didn’t get a desecrate in here because i already used all of those up today and yesterday but YES i squeezed in a masturbatory#<- current favorite words to say#also this definitely ran off in a different direction because my ideas on what noé stands for allegorically speaking aren’t totallydefined#he is a narrator as well as the sole witness to the allegory thus existing somewhere in between narrator#and audience. this also makes him the only real guy in vnc#and i was going to talk about like how vnc is just mochijun thinking about how miserable her fans make her#like noé being in crazy denial over the allegory he fell in love with that he completely disrespects what it’s trying to say for the sake#of his own comfort#much like how readers will often ignore what a text is trying to say for the sake of their own comfort hmmmmmm

TENTATIVE ANALYSES: THE CASE STUDY OF VANITAS
Mémoire 7: Bal Masqué, Night of Sneering Masks
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
Tumblr media
We open on a flashback about Noé's Teacher actually teaching him something for once: the story of the Babel Incident and the origins of the vampires. Then we cut to the masked ball, where Noé's and Dominique's cute moment together is cut short by Vanitas' gallivanting.
Tumblr media
Still, Noé manages to get lost, and this gives Dominique the occasion to bring Vanitas to a secluded place and try to torture him for information on who he actually is and what is he doing. Initially, he is resistant in his usual snark, but then Domi seems to hit a trigger: she assumes that he 'worships' the Vampire of the Blue Moon. Vanitas' response to this is to run off, jump on a chandelier, and yell to all the vampires in attendance that he is the heir to Vanitas of the Blue Moon's power, and shows a 'Mark of Possession' (a sort of tattoo vampires leave on their prey as sign of ownership) by them on his arm. He claims that he will save all cursebearers; that shall be his vengeance on Vanitas.
NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES
Tumblr media
The scene of Vanitas' torture at the hands of Dominique is interspected with a small flashback panel: a bloodied hand reaching up. The panel is not explained right away, but we see Vanitas' behaviour having a drastic change after it: from cheerful and cocky he becomes almost maniac, but his words about Vanitas of the Blue Moon indicate very negative emotions. We learn at the end of the chapter that he was bitten by that vampire on the arm, so it could be a memory of that instance; but it's still ambiguous enough that it could be revealed as something else entirely.
CHARACTERS
Tumblr media
Dominique: in the last chapter, while she clearly disliked Vanitas, she hadn't taken direct action against him. Here she does: she displays her actually sadistic side by torturing Vanitas to get him to talk about what he really wants and what his relationship with the Vampire of the Blue Moon was. This is all done in Noé's name, but he is unaware of it: she carefully waits for him to get away before even talking to Vanitas. She is fiercely protective of Noé, but ultimately, doesn't trust him to protect himself and doesn't want him to see this side of her.
Tumblr media
Vanitas: here he is notable for his reaction to Dominique 's words: at first he acts cocky and careless, even complimenting her on her aim as she throws knives at him. Then he retaliates to the attack, but on the psychological level: he derides her as a 'convenient female', pointong out and mocking her emotional dependency on Noé. But then he is truly wounded in return, as Dominique, not even aware of the impact her words will have, accuses him of 'worshipping' VotBM, stating his taking of their name as evidence. Vanitas, in absence of better words, flips his shit: he suddenly decides to abandon the cautious approach he had used up to that point, jumps on a chandelier, and screams to a room filled with vampires that he is the heir to Vanitas of the Blue Moon, see the Mark of Possession as evidence, and that he will cure all cursebearers as 'revenge' on the one who marked them. Then he stands there, an empty look in his eyes.
Tumblr media
A Vanitas hanno fatto dire così perché AMICA STOCAZZO era troppo regionale
Noé: he is here to quite literally get lost and meet Luca. And to illustrate a problem in his relationship with Dominique: he isn't aware of her feelings towards him, even when she's being so obvious that Vanitas, a stranger, figured it out at a glance.
Tumblr media
Jeanne: attending the Bal Masqué, we get the first hint that something isn't well with her. She is away from Luca, crounching on the ground as if she is in physical pain.
Luca: he briefly appears to interact with Noé in a much different way, even apologizing for how they parted last time.
TEMATICHE
This chapter further explores the dynamic between Dominique and Noé, albeit indirectly; it shows us a love sincere and fiercely protective, but that can also become secretive and stifling, and where some things aren't out in the open.
It also begins to introduce the very complicated relationship between the two Vanitas, with the revelation of the 'revenge' motivation.
SYMBOLISM
• The Moon: the big (supposedly) blue moon that figures in Vanitas' flashback, and is rapidly becoming an indicator for the presence/involvement of the Vampire of the Blue Moon.
REFERENCES
Found none this chapter.
And this was all for chapter 7. Thank you for reading insofar!

So since in Gévaudan with Astolfo it was implied that a vampire’s Mark will fade from the Marked when that vampire dies…
I wonder if the continued vibrancy of Luna’s Mark on Vanitas and Mikhail is a testament to their power or a sign that at least some part of them lives.
(Though Luna’s Mark does seem to be far from the norm given that it grows as Vanitas and Mikhail call upon their power and have their personal formulas rewritten.)
