A list of some of my favorite fics I read in 2023, though note not all of them are from this year. I feel like I didn’t get to do as much reading as I would’ve liked but I guess at least I was still able to put together a decent list! This isn’t a ranking, I listed everything in alphabetical order.

Character study of Hadesgame Achilles & his time in the house of hades, pre-canon. Also, Zagreus takes care of a plant & it’s so wholesome. Lovely, atmospheric, and fueled by vibes, I adore the secret garden inspiration which slots into the hadesgame-verse sooo perfectly. This is great for the sad girlies like me who recently re-watched the movie from the 90s and thought “what if the whole movie was just us watching lord craven being a sad, pining dilf the whole time?” *clicks tongue* noice.

A Reasonable Explanation by stygius (pza)

I already read On The Ropes by red_smear last year so it doesn’t get to be on this list but I did go into 2023 continuing to seek out some of the “old classics” for this ship (yanno how reading fics that were published before joining the fandom sometimes feels like consuming media that existed before you were born? lol) this one is fun for the subversion on the “relaying messages” trope and taking god worshipping to literal (sexyy) extremes… I think if you wanted a good pza introductory fic this would be a good place to start!

Found this on a whim one day while clicking through the tags, as it is pretty much the only dedicated Troilus & Cressida Patrochilles fic on AO3 and it is ＢＲＩＬＬＩＡＮＴ！ The story is simply that Thersites stumbles upon Achilles & Patroclus having sex in their tent and he provides his usual witty and scathing commentary throughout. It truly reads like Shakespeare in prose form, I could easily imagine it being staged, it’s like a deleted scene from the play! The ending is also pitch perfect and still lives in my head rent-free. If you’re familiar with Shakespeare’s version of the characters definitely give it a read.

I was going to recommend a patrochilles fic by infinitesle that I love which is you are the currents that are pulling me onward but I’m pretty sure I read it in 2022 so it doesn’t count, sadge. So instead I’ll recommend another lovely morsel, a pza fic set in the jazz age au that a bunch of us in the pza channel of the hades lounge discord collectively came up with. Idk this might be a “you had to be there” kind of story but I think it still paints a pretty picture and if it inspires anyone else to contribute to the AU I wouldn’t complain. I’ll make my own proper contribution eventually, mark my words!

Baejax is well-known for their long fics which are all bangers ofc but personally my favorite piece of theirs this year was actually this oneshot in which Patroclus is engaged to Hector and then cheats on him with his ex, Achilles. They get caught in the act and the results are… predictable, lol. I love that it hews close to the tone of the Iliad where it’s no good/bad guys, just flawed humans making flawed choices and the AITA version of this story would totally be given an Everyone Sucks Here verdict, I’m sure. I’m STILL thinking about the ending even months & months later. Oh and of course, the sex is chef’s kiss!

One Night Of Chaos by Luddleston (pza)

This was technically a Dec 2022 read but I’m making an exception for it because I feel like it’s the flavor of pza I had been craving all along when I was reading through some of the older classics for this ship and it was key in helping fuel the inspiration for my own pza fics this year. There’s just something about Zag being invited into Patrochilles’ little world to watch their charming rapport with one another & being disgustingly in love that’s PEAK CONTENT for me and I loved this spin where he gets to meet them while they’re still alive, pre-heartbreak. Basically everything about it is my personal ur-pza text so if you’ve liked any of my own pza I’m sure you would like this one too. The sequel is also fun and was properly a 2023 read for me so I’ll mention it too haha.

Judging by the time stamp of my comment, I started my 2023 off right by reading this fic by one of my all-time favorite eruri authors! This is an omegaverse fic with a twist, it is well-written, hilarious, and had me guessing up until the very end. I would literally recommend anything this author writes (including the asscreed fics she & other beloved friend @zorthania have been writing this year… I don’t go here but these are my blorbo in-laws and I care them uwu)

I didn’t take the time to read many other eruri fics this year unfortunately but I did get to beta some fics for this year’s eruri matchmaking event and this was one of them: a gladiator AU set in Ancient Rome and it was so serendipitous that I got to help with something so close to my current hyperfixation! The premise is very intriguing and it’s off to a lovely start… not to mention the author is a sweetie who knows & has a lot of passion for the time period… so check it out!

the slow mending by meikuree (pikuhan)

I finally got to dip my toes into some pikuhan fics this year and luckily my first one was a real banger! This was such a lovely little canon-compliant Hanji character study along with an exploration of their relationship with Pieck representing the two sides coming together and it was so beautifully written. It feels like the perfect introductory fic for the ship just in general because it really highlights everything that’s attractive about it! Love it!

tight fit by naxtique (zagchilles)

naxtique’s fics pretty much all scratch that itch for hadesgame dead dove of the dub/non-con variety, oftentimes laced with angst. Their particular flavor of Zagchilles with slave-to-his-passion, guilt-stricken Achilles is so compelling it always makes me stare at the wall thinking about it. And this is my favorite one, in which Achilles gets sex-pollen’d and ends up in a compromising position with Zagreus. Another one where the ending haunts my dreams (in a good way). Not for everyone obviously but if this sort of thing is up your alley, it’s great.

Another patrochilles GOAT well-known for their serial longfics, and this year I’ve been enjoying their modern AU Patrochilles where the two of them grow up together in rural Greece. This one has probably my favorite ever synthesis of takes on Achilles’ character I’ve read so far—brilliant, autistic, and gender fluid. It’s definitely an extreme slow burn and gets pretty angsty & messy at times but it’s also devastatingly realistic & relatable and speaks to me a whole lot :> currently ongoing, definitely worth diving into!

A rant about the villain-stans going “Ohh....killing bad.”

I swear to god if I see one more person saying "but bro, hero killing people is bad!" without realizing the context in which the heroes decided to use lethal force I will throw a plastic bottle into the ocean.

Firstly, normally heroes should not kill villains, as it's not their right to decide. In most normal situations they should try and capture the villain with minimum damage caused.

But when I see people giving Hawks shit for killing Twice, or Endeavour and the new American chick for going for the kill against Shigaraki, I want to bang my head against the wall.

What the fuck is wrong with people? Do you not understand the situation at all?!

Alright, I'll start with Twice first. Twice's origin was tragic, I get it. He wasn't an evil person, I get that. But it DOES NOT MATTER how tragic your story is, if you are an immediate threat to the safety of hundreds, if not thousands of people, taking lethal action against you is the right thing to do.

What else could have Hawks done? Just babysit Twice until the war is over? Well, guess what, even though that is stupid, he did that. It was only when Dabi attacked him, giving Twice a chance to escape that Hawks used lethal force. Hawks has stated that his worst match-up is against fire quirks because they easily render him useless.

And when you bring the guy, with the strongest fire quirk we have seen in the series, what do you want him to do? Be reasonable, did you really expect Hawks to give Twice a therapy session to turn him into the light when so much shit is going on? What the fuck?

These villain fans need to know this...JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A TRAGIC ORIGIN, DOESN'T MAKE YOUR LIFE MORE VALUABLE THAN OTHERS.

This is something, I don't understand why it isn't common sense. It must suck, to have been fucked over by society but that doesn't give you the right to kill everyone.

One guy wasn't treated fairly so he turned evil, but now we should prioritize his feelings over the lives of others. Do you not see the hypocrisy in that statement.

Just because you don't know the story of the people who died. doesn't mean their lives are any less valuable than the pretty bad boy who you do know.

What happened to Twice, Shigaraki and the others sucked, but the heroes have every right to try and kill the threat to save the innocents that might get unfairly caught in between. Even if the heroes knew the tragic stories of the bad guys, they would still do the same.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

But no, we get idiots saying  "Bro, he was sad so killing hundreds was justified." or "He was in pain. The heroes should try and talk with the guy trying to actively kill them so his feelings get sorted out."

The world of MHA is pretty realistic for a shounen, it's not a world where talking to an S-class villain like Shigaraki about his feelings will make him instantly switch to the light. It can be done, but is not a real option when he’s actively hurting people! 

There's a difference between villains like Shigaraki and Gentle Criminal. It's not that hard to figure out, you're smart enough to do so on your own.

I like the villains, some more than the main heroes but I’m also capable of thinking for more than 2 seconds about why the characters do what they do and not be blinded by "Uwu, he sadge....my hewart!!!"

What this fic wants me to feel about Sylvain, Ingrid, and Lysithea attacking Woobiegard in her SS vision: "Poor Woobiegard! To have her dear friends become such monstrous shells of their former selves and attack her so cruelly!" What I actually feel towards Sylvain, Ingrid, and Lysithea in that scene: "You're doing great, sweeties!" Also lol at Captain forcing Dimitri and Claude along for this map but only allowing them to be competent whenever it wouldn't make them outshine poor old Woobiegard.

The SS visions that put Ingrid and Sylvain in that light kinda like... shows off how little he thinks of Dimitri's relationships with his friends, in a way.

We're supposed to genuinely see Edelgard as the victim during her SS visions - it's obvious from the framing of the scenes, from the narration, from how "breaking destiny" is a """theme""" of this fic and SS is supposedly Edelgard and Byleth's "destinies" that need breaking, that we're supposed to feel sad for Edelgard. She's beaten to shit, her sadness and guilt and loneliness is put front and center, the ones beating the shit outta her are described as these horrible twisted versions of themselves, they are the ones the narration says betray Edelgard, etc. etc.. Ingrid and Sylvain can't be mad at Edelgard for, at that point, murdering Dimitri - and likely Felix as well - no, they are the bad guys for turning their backs on Edelgard. Oh, and also Lysithea should just be chill with Edelgard working with the people who tortured her and ruined her family. She's supposed to stay the cute, eternally loyal lil' sister for Edelgard to pat on the head and call a good girl.

Sylvain and Ingrid shouldn't be that close to Dimitri. They should want to kill Dimitri for Edelgard's sake. They should turn their back on their childhood friend, not Edelgard, because Edelgard is obviously better for them. Unintentional or not, that is the subtext Cap'n is laying down when he punishes them for daring to be mad at Edelgard for killing him.

And also, her thinking that they betrayed her means that, at minimum, Edelgard doesn't think she betrays them when she actively puts them in mortal danger by starting her war. For all her talk about how she "can't imagine anyone walking by her side" and how she "knows that her path must be a lonely one," the second people. Y'know. Leave her ass for her horrific, morally reprehensible actions, they become traitors. She "dared" to put her trust in them, and they threw it away. In the end, Edelgard thinks she's morally above everyone else, with anyone who doesn't blindly follow her down her path of bloodshed being deemed as a traitor. All her guilt and all her "recognition" for her actions gets promptly flushed down the shitter.

AND I KNOW like literally he only ham-fisted Dimitri and Claude in the chapel to make them look worse. Their presence changes literally nothing - they don't save more students than if they weren't there, they don't stop Jeralt from dying (since Claude sips on that Dumb Fuck Juice and shoots behind Myson instead of just fuckin' headshotting him, and then he gets sucked into the Void and just leaves the fight scene), they don't uncover any new information. Dimitri was just there to remind everyone that he's cRaZy, and Claude was just there to remind everyone that he's eViL. Just like the visions, just like most of Edelgard's "trauma," you take them out of the chapter entirely and literally nothing changes. We already knew the author hates Dimitri and Claude and we already know the reductive caricatures he sees them as, their presence here does nothing for anything.

They're not allowed to actually shine. Dimitri can't take on the Demonic Beasts and Claude can't try to investigate the cause for the transformation - y'know, letting them show off their strengths - because doing so means that Edelgard isn't the one doing those things.

Dimitri can't be better at taking down Demonic Beasts than Edelgard, shown by him consistently felling them in one strike, which is immensely helpful in saving the students by taking care of the problem quickly; he must reduced to something that's frankly barely better than the Beasts themselves, obviously off his rocker and obviously someone who's just soOoOoOOOo CRAZY GUYS.

Claude can't be better at tracking down what the cause of the students turning into Demonic Beasts is than Edelgard, shown by him noticing the Crest Stone fragments and being forward-thinking enough to try and grab one for research, which could potentially yield extremely vital information everyone can work with; he must be reduced to a morally bankrupt monster who'd loot from dead bodies of poor innocent students.

Cap'n has to reduce them into villainous archetypes to hide the fact that frankly, Edelgard did shit all in that chapter. She didn't fight the Demonic Beasts nearly as well as Dimitri, she doesn't do shit to figure out what's going on with the Crest Stones - or, at minimum, point Byleth in the right direction (since Edelgard would know already lmao) - like Claude, so Dimitri is a raving murder machine and Claude was only out for himself. Giving them an ounce more nuance than that would make it obvious how shit Edelgard is, so he hides that shittiness by overexaggerating certain traits of the other two lords.

And in that same vein, he has to make Sylvain and Ingrid and Lysithea look like horrible traitors to hide the fact that Edelgard is ruining their lives. She killed their best friend(s, if Felix is also dead), she ruined their countries, she threw their lives into nonstop fighting for five years - but she's so sad!!! And Ingrid and Sylvain and Lysithea are bullying her!!! We should feel bad for poor wittle wonewy Edelgard!!!

It takes a baseball bat to the head to any non-Edelstan reader of this fic, because Edelgard literally does nothing to deserve forgiveness, she never earns redemption, she never works for fuckin' anything. She just Sadges at all the """""undeserved""""" hatred flung at her and we're supposed to take that as enough of an arc for her to deserve sympathy from the reader, but no! I'm fuckin' cheerin' Sylvain and Ingrid and Lysithea on when they beat her ass into the dirt! Get rid of her! She's self-centered, she's selfish, she doesn't care about people if they don't grovel at her feet, she started a continent spanning war without even thinking she'll win it, literally throwing away the lives of countless innocent people on the chance that she might hypothetically win, and after all that she still blames everyone else when she faces the consequences of her actions! She's god-awful, and a threat to damn near everyone around her! But nope, she's the author's darling, so actually she's right and everyone else is wrong.

It's very clear that Cap'n will not let Edelgard truly be seen in any kind of negative light; people who fight against her for any reason are bad, people that can't join Edelgard's side but are better than Edelgard at something are bad, people who criticize Edelgard for the awful shit she does are bad. And that's... well. Something, for sure

Literally, some of my thoughts on Wil’s character and his full break down if Philza (or Tommy – second best option in my opinion even if it would destroy his character - or Techno) is really the traitor. Yes, i don’t think the boy is fully broken. Yet.

First of all, I have two theories behind the TNT; the only real info we have about it is that it was under Manberg and it wasn’t the 51 that Dream gave him as it was actually provided by an “unnamed ally” as Wil said.

So, yeah. Could just be Techno, nothing new, we know he has like +50 stacks of gunpowder in his base so whatever... But why didn’t Wil just say it was he then? (edit: in a recent live Wil mentioned again this “provider”, this time about armour and tools; he didn’t mention a name again)

Maybe Eret then? We know he has TNT... But again, would he help destroy his precious ‘history’? The man is building a museum ffs

Dream? Possible, but again, why not mention his name? He already provided the gunpowder, tnt and all that...

. . . Yep, here it comes. Philza Minecraft? If the theory that Phil is actually whitelisted and playing while no one else is live is correct, then well. He acted like Wil was doing a bad thing on his live but idk, anything is possible at this point.

Here comes the actual shit show and the theory I am in love with:

There was never any TNT under Manberg.

Wil is not as broken as we think; he may not have much, but he still have Tommy and even if he acts like he doesn’t actually care about Techno’s possible betrayal, he does and he thinks he has Techno on his side too and his has his dad – the one who he wants to make proud even if hes far away.

Tommy on his side is really self explanatory, nothing new; he was always there helping or not, something holding him to the ground. Wil’s problem was always his pride and Tommy was one of the only ones to keep that under control.

Techno’s a strange case. Wil never ‘trusted’ him; lies. In the festival night Techno did his best to stall killing Tubbo as much as he could, almost like... Waiting for orders?.. Well, Wilbur knew it, he has to; he reads people like no one else. And he gave no order nonetheless. He trusted Techno to decide.

Wil is not broken. Not yet. Cause, even if he says he doesn’t, he has things to lose – he has Tommy’s trust, Techno’s loyalty and his god forsaken pride. Yes, his pride, the one thing that made him move every piece in this chess board named Dream smp;

Let’s start at the festival; there was no button there, no ‘boom room’, nothing... Just the unstoppable voices screaming at him to do something he said without thinking in a moment of rage – just the chat pleading and ordering him to blow it up and a lonely man trying to stop them.

Then we have the ‘boom room’ first appearance, so easy to find now, huh?.. And yet, there they were – again the voices screaming for a deaf man to blow it up while Tommy did his best to scream louder; it worked.

Same goes for Quackity at Niki’s birthday.

Jschlatt knows this shit, he knows Wilbur – and I really think he doesn’t care about the title or yje land, he just wants to see Wil’s fall and he is doing a good job of helping the man in question dig even deeper with this info... ‘haha just took all your boom things, what ya gonna do?’

 This is the question we – the voices of chat – have been answering... What is he going to do?

Well... Fire.

 Now, he has to blow that shit up – wanting it or not. We are in too deep in his mind; hells, maybe we are it. When your conscience screams at you to blow it all up, what can you do if not gather sand and gunpowder?

What can you do if not break completely? Answer: run to the arms of the ones you trust – Tommy, Techno... Phil. Wil will only break and really go batshit insane when/if he is betrayed by the ones he holds dear – Fundy is proof, since Eret’s one didn’t change much in Wil but his sons one shattered him.
