My partner made a comment about how this episode fed into “bury your gays” and like, while his heart was in the right place with the critique, I felt so strongly the opposite way
Like on its face, yes, two gay men died…. But like, in a show about a zombie apocalypse where we’re tracking at least 1 Major Character Death per episode, Bill & Frank are triumphant compared to every other character. They got to live to be old and gray together after a life of relatively peaceful flourishing. They chose their deaths on their own terms, a luxury most people don’t get in this world. They got to die together, in each others arms, neither left to live and suffer alone. They got to go with dignity, autonomy, and love, in peace, together. They got to choose. They made their end meaningful. They were happy and satisfied and fulfilled. Everything that gay characters are so often not afforded in life, much less in death.
Not only that, but narratively speaking, their deaths were used in exact opposition to “bury your gays.” The trope was created to reinforce that being gay is a sin, that gays must die as punishment for their evil ways. It’s intended to be a narrative consequence, the moral of the story, a warning to its audience.
But the deaths of Bill and Frank were used as closure to a story arc about living a happy, fulfilled life with your partner. Even further than that, their arc was used to demonstrate that there is meaning in life because we choose to create meaning, that purpose is found in each other, in loving someone, even at the end of the world. They are held up as an example of what to strive for, of a reason to keep living, of something to pursue. It is completely antithetical to bury your gays and is in fact a brilliant subversion of it in that it grounds the purpose of the narrative itself.
Tl;dr: TLOU really said love wins.

I sort of love that Van is reliably a dick to Jackie the whole time they’re in the woods. This is a character with a reputation for being sunshine, but Jackie left her for dead ONE TIME and that lesbian was like “fuck it, it’s on sight for the rest of eternity.”
There’s an alternate reality where Jackie survives to be rescued, and Van rolls up 25 years later with booze to share with everyone, “except you. You know what you did.”

Gonna go do other angry chore things shortly because anytime I sit to chill, I start doom scrolling but I just have to say, it's not about us wanting them to keep making things for free forever. It's about how they're treating fans who would have given anything they could, if they had just let us know what was going on before it got to this point.
It's about they hyped this as a huge news drop that we would all be super jazzed about...and then said "well I guess you guys don't want to follow us, peace out" when we weren't.
It's about them not doing a minimum of market research, or just TRY to use other alternatives, because they don't want to do the hard lifting of self-promotion, or have the patience to wait for their community to grow as they put out the content we really wanted to see.
It's about them not even caring enough about their fans to consider international costs and money exchanges and cutting out anyone outside of the U.S. because they thought "anyone can afford this".
It's not about them being worth $6 a month. It's about them deciding that if you can't afford that, you are not worth their time.

not to be a woman womaning all over the place but i feel like if you genuinely like. do not have friends that are women then you have something to work on. if you cant think of any female characters that you treat the same way you do male characters then you have something to work on. if you cant handle even seeing "i dont like being called a guy/bro/lad/etc because it doesnt feel gender neutral to me" but can understand when one of your masc besties is uncomfortable with being called girlie or sister then you have something to work on. if your default in regards to how you handle other people and even characters is to assume masculinity then you have something to work on. if you cant even let women and otherwise feminine people speak about our experiences without bringing up how you suffer too then you have something to work on.
it doesnt matter if youre queer or a poc or a minority in whatever which way, if you do not include women in your life and cant even stand a fucking inch of genuine feminism (and i dont mean terfs but god is it fucking agonizing that thats all you people can think of when you hear feminism anymore) where the point is to treat women, all women, equally then you have something to work on. listen to women, even the ones whose experiences completely dont align with yours (hell ESPECIALLY the ones whose experiences completely dont align with yours). just like how we all have to check ourselves for racism, ableism, queerphobia, we all have to check ourselves for misogyny too. stop acting like it got solved at some point. it still exists and it exists within you and you have to actually fucking work on that. "women should be included in your life and you should listen to them" shouldnt be a hard goddamn pill to swallow.
