RvB High School!AU
This is another big favorite of mine--my high school AU. Take note on the fact that I've never gone to high school (I've been homeschooled since 4th grade) so I have no personal experience on how high school actually works. I am quite willing to take criticism and hear anything on how to correct anything that needs it.
Another thing is that this AU has a lot of OCs. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. There are multiple Freelancer OCs (including my main OC and a main protagonist, Mich), so many Chorus OCs, and one of my AI OCs, Tau. Altogether, there are 30 OCs so far! I'm not certain that every single one of them is going to show up at all, but I just wrote them out in my list of students and teachers where I thought they'd fit.
This AU was originally going to be a teen!fake-dating!AU involving Mich and her love interest, another OC I have, Del (Delaware). I began planning out how the process from fake-dating to real-dating would go, and I was enjoying it. I was reading @ cinead's Carolina the Teenage Witch series for inspiration when I realized something. Why not expand this AU into not just a specific thing happening in high school? What if this was just a whole high school AU, so it could involve so many other fun things in it? I figured this was a great idea, so I rolled with it.
Now, Mich is a junior with the RnBs (minus Lopez and Kai, including Tex and Wash), multiple other Freelancers (Florida, the Triplets), some of the Chorus crew (Kimball, Doyle, Dr. Grey), half the mercs (Felix and Locus), and the Blues and Reds (minus Biff) as classmates. Mich and the RnBs are a uh... friend group? Cliche? I don't know what it's called, but they hang out constantly. Other students in different grades include Kai (a freshman), Siris and Sharkface (both seniors), the Chorus lieutenants (all freshman), other Freelancers like York, Carolina, the twins, CT, and Maine (all seniors), and Niner and Dylan Andrews (both seniors as well).
We've got plenty of teachers that include the AI (this including Tau, VIC, Lopez, and Santa), barely remembered characters like Lemons and Jenkins (not to be confused with Genkins, who is also here and is Jenkins' brother. And Chrovos is their sibling as well! It's madness!), and other Freelancers like Wyoming, Illinois, and Utah. I don't know how big high schools can be, but there were lots of different classes and I didn't think every teacher taught 5 classes each, so we ended up with lots of teachers. If this isn't accurate to real high schools then please let me know.
I don't actually have a lot exactly planned out for this AU yet. I made the list of students and their classes (which will be included at the bottom, along with teachers and subjects they teach), and have been so preoccupied trying to figure out what regular high school is like that I haven't written a lot, plot-wise. I do have certain details and events that will happen eventually, though.
In this AU, the Freelancers, all orphans living at a huge foster home (run by the Counselor), go by state names rather than their real names (smth to do with their introduction to the rest of the kids... new kid start getting called a state that isn't taken. It quickly becomes the name they go by.). Practically all of them are in high school, so all of them are mainly just waiting to reach legal age rather than get adopted out. Carolina is the only exception to the Freelancers being orphans.
The "older" Chorus friend group consist of Kimball, Dr. Grey, Doyle, two of my OCs, Del and Dr. Lana, as well as Felix and Locus (until they betray the group and their connection with the rest are broke).
Carolina and Church are siblings, and Simmons is their cousin. Unfortunately, all of them have shitty parents (or, the parents that are there are shitty--Allison passed away years ago, which led to the Director's downfall, and Simmons has a shitty dad who is in the middle of a divorce with his not-that-much-better wife). All three of them try to stay at friends' houses as often as possible, to keep out of the toxic environment of their own houses. This works for the Church siblings, since the Director is often away on business trips, though Simmons has a more difficult time getting out of the house. Fortunately, Carolina and Church are always willing to give an excuse to get him out.
York is still at the foster home, despite being 18. He says it's because he hasn't found a place to stay yet, but it's really because he's waiting for his younger sibling Mich to be 18 too, so they can stick together after they've both completed high school. North has repeatedly invited York to stay at his and South's apartment, but York denies every time, saying he wouldn't want to intrude (despite intruding at their place constantly). He thinks Mich wouldn't like being that separated from him, since they have been together since she was born... he's not aware of the fact that Mich definitely wouldn't be bummed, because she would crash at the apartment whenever she wanted to see him. He's a bit protective. That's all right with South, though--she never agreed to the invites North keeps giving to York, and she'd rather not deal with her twin's idiot boyfriend living in the same building as her again. She had just gained the bliss of living on the opposite end of town from him...
Genkins, Jekins, and Chrovos (known only as Ms. C), as stated before, are siblings. They have quite the rivalry among themselves that most students and other teachers find amusing. Genkins and Jenkins argue over how to say each other's names, and Chrovos just adds fuel to the fire. Stufents often wonder why, despite all of them being unmarried and two being men, the three all have different last names. The main theory is that they all have different fathers and are actually half-siblings, despite Jenkins' numerous announcements that they are, in face, full-siblings. On top of this feud, there are two other teachers that are often confused for each other--Jones and Johannes--despite having no relation to each other. They just look strikingly similar. This annoys the fuck out of the both of them.
Illinois is the geography teacher, and he's one of those teachers who dresses up in full apparelrelating to the lesson of the day. He tries to have fun with his students, and he's a heavily favored teacher due to this, as well as his understanding and patience with both colleagues and students.
After a longer school break (idk whether it should be Christmas break or spring break), Shatter Squad and Viper are going to be enlisted in the school, with West and Axel as new teachers/coaches. Ik almost everybody hates these guys, but I came up with the idea that these new students with an already-made rivalry between them should appear in the middle of the school year and disrupt everyone's groove... shit's gonna happen, tensions are gonna rise, and all because these new idiots arrived. I think it'll turn out all right.
Mich likes to tell Church "if Carolina and York get married, then me and you are going to be siblings-in-law", which irritates Church because he truthfully believes she's the most annoying person he has ever met.
Some ships included in this AU are: Grimmons, Tuckington, Docnut, Chexboose (is that the ship for Church, Tex, and Caboose? There is a ship for that, right?), and a monstrosity (/j) I came up with... Dr. Sargida (any different ship name ideas are welcome, this sounds stupid lmao), a deadly combination of Dr. Grey, Sarge, and Florida. The ultimate power trio.... they could take over the world....
Now I'm going to be putting the lists of students and teachers. Again, if there's something funky with any of this, please let me know! I know not of the schedules of regular high schoolers and I don't know if any of this is possible!

The States and 2P America
So the 2ps get to the 1p world after making a truce with their counterparts and escaping their collapsing world where they're the only survivors. They then proceed to live with their 1ps in a crazy roommate sort-of situation. The only problem is that when Allen gets to Alfred's house it's this huge mansion and one of the states opens the door making him very confused as he never had states of his own and his idiotic 1p is the father of 50 kids!
"What the *beep* Porkchop?! Since do you have fifty little brats runnin’ around?!"
Alfred gives him a full rundown on finding/raising the states and then proceeds to draft him into babysitting! At first, Allen tried to ignore them but then faces the painful realization that leaving 50 states alone is never a good idea. After finally rounding up everyone he could find and freeing the thirteen (most responsible being Delaware and Virginia) from being trapped in the barn by their younger siblings, he does a headcount.
Allen: Okay one, two, three.....45. We're missing five! Where's Nevada, Hawaii, Alaska, Texas, and New Mexico?
Random state raises their hand: I think Nevada's in Vegas gambling again. He goes there a lot to triple his allowance!
Another state: I remember Texas said something about rodeos and bull riding all the way to Dallas. Also, Alaska and Hawaii left a note saying something about hanging out with New Mexico and Tony in Roswell!
Allen: But we're in D.C.! How did they get all the way over there in 3 hours?! *States shrug while Allen looks close to screaming into the void* Okay, everyone into the bus! We're going to get your siblings!
Cue cross country road-trip like the hangover where, after hours of getting lost in Disney Land, Delaware’s nagging about being the oldest and most mature much to Massachusetts chagrin because he’s clearly got better colleges, getting into a dance contest in Maine, keeping Arizona from getting stuck in the Grand Canyon for the hundredth time, Wisconsin participating in a cheese eating contest, Maine cooking seafood, Georgia making 30 peach cobblers, Colorado making a giant igloo, Washington and Oregon's hippie phases making a return, playing hockey in Minnesota, fishing Michigan out of the great lakes, New Jersey getting stalked by the Jersey Devil who’s like that stray cat that keeps following you around, keeping New York from starting a fight at Yankee’s game, gator wrestling in the Florida everglades, getting dressed for Mardi Gras in Lousianna, getting lost in Iowa’s biggest corn maze, the Dakota twins almost killing the Carolinas for trying to graffiti Mt. Rushmore (there’s a bit of a twin rivalry), avoiding the secret service less they get caught and ratted out to Alfred, seeing Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and trying to keep Alabama from sticking his head in it on a dare, crossing the Mississippi, running from rodeo clowns that Tennessee angered after he picked a fight with them for insulting his country music, finally picking up Texas with his new Rodeo bull-riding championship belt and tying him up with his own lasso, various misadventures, including recuing Idaho from an accidental marriage, in Vegas that will stay in Vegas, finding/grounding Nevada from gambling after he almost lost 50 grand and Wyoming to a circus, they finally arrive in Roswell.
Allen, too tired to care at this point: Alright! Who's this Tony New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska said they we're with?
Maryland: He's Dad's cool alien friend from 1947. New Mexico likes hanging out with him in his spaceship playing pranks on Britain and the other nations!
Allen hardly believes her but is too tired to care at this point: A-Alien? Sure, why not?! Let’s just go get them! Maybe we’ll run into Nessie too!
Iowa whispering to Ohio: But isn’t Nessie in Scotland?
Ohio: *shrugs*
After falling into a series of booby traps a la Alaska, they finally track down Tony’s ship in Alaska and find the three playing video games with Tony. It finally registers in Allen’s mind that there’s a real freakin’ alien in front of him playing Mario Kart.
Allen: T-t-that’s an….
State: Yep!
Allen: And he’s playing video games….
States: Yep!
Allen, not able to handle this anymore: *faints*
After a not so long drive back to D.C. courtesy of New Jersey’s driving, Getting KFC in Kentucky for supper with vegan salad for Allen and irritating said state in the process, and almost forgetting Rhode Island, they finally make it bake to D.C. and settle Allen down on the couch, gathering around him to watch a Marvel marathon acting like the innocent little angels they’re not. They also duct tape California’s mouth shut and tie her up with Texas’ lasso because she wouldn’t stop complaining about watching her newest one instead. Alfred finally arrives home from a meeting in Berlin around the time they finish Doctor Strange and sees Allen crashed on the couch with the states around him.
Alfred: So did you have a good time with Uncle Allen?
States: We sure did!
Wisconsin bragging about his trophy made entirely of cheese: I’m the king of cheese once again!
Alfred: Great! Now it’s off to bed everyone!
States: Aww! But we wanted to stay up and play with Uncle Allen!
Alfred: No buts, you can play again tomorrow! Now off to bed!
The states start trudging up to their rooms with California finally being freed. Georgia putting a blanket over Allen, Hawaii putting a hibiscus print pillow under his head, and Maryland putting a note on the end table as they go out. Allen finally wakes up and Alfred, watching the rest of the marathon notices.
Alfred: You were awesome with them dude! I’m going to let you babysit from now on!
Allen: *Screams and faints again*
Alfred: Heh! He’s so excited! *Munches on popcorn*
The next morning Allen wakes up and reads the note: “Thanks for taking care of all of us today! We had a lot of fun, Uncle Allen! From the states. P.S. You were super cool playing baseball at Yankee stadium! Teach us sometime? Also, there's a salad for you in the fridge! :)"
He crumbles the note and puts it in his jacket trying not to break his tough-guy persona. But later when no one looking, he takes it out with a small smile and thinks these brats aren’t so bad after all.
Eventually, they grew on him and Allen comes to consider the all the states like his own secretly loving it when they call him Uncle Allen. They may be little gremlins but his gremlins and if you so much as touch one hair on their head you’ll get a face full of his nailed bat!
Just another day in the Jones’ household!
Meanwhile In Canada:
James is babysitting the provinces for Mathew and is currently in drill sergeant mode pacing in front of the nervous, with the exception of Quebec who's extremely excited, lined-up provinces. Kumajiro (cub) and Kuma (adult) are just chilling and watching them with whistles around their necks and cute little maple leaf hats courtesy of British Columbia.
James: All right, listen up! I’m going to teach you all how to rough it and survive out in the wilderness! Now, who knows how to start a fire?
All the provinces turn to stare at Manitoba.
Manitoba: Oh, come on! I set fire to Papa’s flannel shirt collection one time!
James: Okaaaaay ignoring that, everybody get into groups of two and I’ll assign jobs!
Nova Scotia raises her hand: But there’s thirteen of us!
James: Fine then, eenie meenie miny mo… *Points to Prince Edward Island* you! Prissy pants boy you're with me! We’re gathering firewood!
P.E.I. looking up from his mirror: Excuse me!? I’m not gonna get these designer clothes dirty picking up filthy wood!
James *facepalms*: Give me that! *Proceeds to chuck the mirror into the lake much to P.E.I’s horror and Ontario’s glee!*
(They don't get along because of P.E.I.’s arrogant personality and constant declaring himself in charge despite Ontario being the oldest and having the capital).
James: We’re out here to survive off the land which means no cell phones, no internet, and definitely NO BEAUTY PRODUCTS. NOW IS THAT CLEAR?!
Provinces: Sir, yes sir!
James being the big softie that he is but won't admit: Good! Now we meet back here by sunset and we’ll roast marshmallows!
Everyone hurries and gets on with their jobs with Alberta somehow ending up stuck in a tree and harassed by woodpeckers and Yukon and Saskatchewan being the most successful by communicating with/befriending a family of beavers that help them build a shelter. By the end of the day, James also feels a sense of fatherly protectiveness and pride over the provinces like Allen. he also secretly loves it when they call him Uncle James. Nunavut also manages to find bigfoot who helps gather food much to James’ shock!

Retrievers - XXIX - Dusk
Russia leans over a little as if to shield America from the world. America shakes a little, and Russia cups the back of America's head. Russia slowly walks over to the couch and guilds America in his steps. Russia pulls America into his lap, and America curls up into his chest.
America glances around the room before relaxing.
"This is so hard," America says.
"Yes, it is," Russia agrees.
"I'm just trying to protect them, you know? I'm trying so hard... I'm sorry. I'm sure you're stressed as it is."
"Shh, it's okay. You don't have to apologize."
America goes quiet and clutches onto Russia's shirt. Russia slowly rubs America's back.
"Can we change positions? My chest hurt."
Russia slowly picks America up and flips him onto his back. America sighs with relief, and Russia leans back. Russia gently pulls America to his chest and nuzzles America's hair.
'He's warm, and he smells nice.'
Russia smiles and closes his eyes.
"Russia?"
Russia opens his eyes and looks up to see Texas standing over them, a nervous look on his face.
"Yes?"
"Is Dixie okay?"
Russia bites his tongue for a moment.
'I don't think Dixie would want me revealing anything.'
"He will be," Russia finally says.
"... is there anything I could do to help? I just need to. I want to help somehow."
"Go find him and give him a hug," Russia replies with a confident look.
"Huh. Okay," Texas says.
Then Texas waves a large group of teens behind him. Then, they wander into the dining room and surround Dixie with a huge group hug. Russia smiles softly. Dixie laughs and looks at the kids with wide eyes. Dixie glances at Russia with teary eyes and a huge grin.
Russia smiles back before returning his attention to America, who is watching the scene with a brilliant smile that causes Russia's heart to skip a few beats. Russia blushes and buries his nose and mouth into America's hair to his flustered look.
'Meri is so cute.'
America sits up, and Russia releases him. America turns around and pulls Russia down by his shoulders. Then, he smirks and pulls Russia into a deep kiss. Russia immediately reciprocates, and his whole body tingled pleasantly.
It ends sooner than Russia would've liked, but America's giggling makes it worthwhile. America sits on Russia's legs and holds Russia's shoulders.
"Where did you even get wine?" America asks, licking his lips.
Russia shrugs, and America smacks his shoulder playfully with a laugh.
"You could've shared," America teases.
"Dad?"
America and Russia turn toward the voice, and Russia finds Delaware standing in front of them, fidgeting.
"Yeah? What is it, kiddo?" America asks.
"I just wanted to let you know that we're running really low on supplies. We might have to start siphoning gas for the generators, and we don't have enough food to last us more than a few more days."
"Shit, that's not good," America says, furrowing his brow.
"We should look for more when we leave to explore the grey magic," Russia suggests.
"Do you think that we'll be able to get anything there?"
"Maybe. It's weird at least."
"Yeah, that much magic in one place won't end well for anyone staying there, but that probably also means that if there were people there, they aren't there anymore," Massachusetts says, "and I can only assume it being grey is not a good thing. You will probably be fine as long as you don't stay long."
America nods.
"We'll have to leave tomorrow," America comments, looking at Russia for a response.
"Who is coming with us?" Russia asks.
"We can!" Alabama and Mississippi chorus.
"And we can take my truck," Alabama offers.
"And I will be going too," Dixie says, "Fin can handle it here, right Fin?"
Finland nods with a grin and flashes them a thumbs up.
"And I'll be helping here too while Dix is gone," Texas says, which is quickly followed by a few dozen kids cheers.
Texas laughs.
"What? It's ain't like they're going far," Texas says.
"But while we have time... ATTENTION!" Dixie exclaims with a loud clap.
The states go silent and spin around to stare at Dixie expectantly. The provinces and countries follow their lead soon after.
"I want all the furniture moved to the edges of the room and the mats brought out. It's time to combat train some of y'all," Dixie announces.
The room becomes a flurry of movement. And when the couch started moving from under him, Russia yelps and clings to America, who is laughing at him. Russia curls around America's body and stares, wide-eyed, at the floor and the group of various states flowing under the couch. If he had reached up, his hand would easily brush the lifted ceilings.
The couch is carefully placed against the wall separating the stairs from the rest of the living room, and several large gymnastics mats are laid across the open floor. Dixie stands in the middle of them and Texas charges at him.
Dixie turns around and grabs Texas by the shoulder and flips him into the air. Texas flies over Dixie and shrieks, landing on his back. Dixie puts a foot on Texas' chest and Texas laughs breathlessly.
"Dixie! I got the arm guards!" Kansas shouts, emerging from a side door and holding up a few huge bins.
'Those states really are strong.'
"Toss some of 'em over to me!" Dixie calls, getting off of Texas.
Kansas opens one of the bins and sends a few pieces of equipment soaring. The bin makes the room smell like dirt and mildew. The equipment looks like it used to be white, but is browned by age and use. Dixie catches them without an issue.
"Okay, now let's teach some of y'all how to punch," Dixie says, a mischievous spark in his eyes.
Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, and Virginia cheers. Lousiana throws some leg and arm guards at Texas, and Texas catches them with a huff. Dixie quickly pulls on the pieces with practiced motions. South Carolina runs at Dixie with a shout, and Dixie raises his arms to block some heavy punches.
"All y'all states need to get into pairs and take one extra person, " Dixie announces, blocking South Carolina's strikes without thought, "once y'all are grouped, send someone to go get you some shin and arm guards."
Texas dawns the equipment and Louisiana laughs and spins and hits Texas with what looks like a hook kick. Texas digs his heels into the ground to keep from moving.
"Everyone is gon' take turns with the equipment. I'll show you guys how to fight, but don't put your full strength into it unless you're sure your partner ain't gonna get hurt. Also, only the states are allowed to use the guards cuz I don't want none of y'all getting hurt over somethin' stupid."
South Carolina backs off, looking playfully defeated. Dixie laughs and turns to Russia.
"Come on Ruski, you need to do this too," Dixie says.
Russia looks to America. America nods and waves him forward. Russia walks forward carefully and Dixie smirks. Dixie holds up the guards.
"Take your best shot," Dixie says, "I ain't gonna go flyin' anywhere, and the guards are charmed."
Russia takes a deep breath and crouches a little. Chatter lights up the rest of the room, and several groups are talking and helping each other.
"Legs further apart," Dixie snaps.
Russia widens his stance and takes a punch.
"Use your shoulders!"
Russia takes another two strikes and kicks up at Dixie's raised arms. Dixie steps back, and Russia pauses.
"Cali! You're gonna have to work with this one!" Dixie says loudly, backing up and moving toward the group with Nigeria.
California and Ohio walk over. Ohio handing off the guards to California, who didn't look thrilled to put it on. The pieces look a little small on California, but it didn't seem to matter. California demands him to take a defensive stance, and she criticizes it.
At first, he was embarrassed by the criticism, but hearing it going on all around him forces him to realize that he isn't the only one who needs practice. He focuses on holding back his strength to keep from hurting the teens.
Russia is lost in the action, and they soon toss the gear and start dodging attacks.
"Don't be afraid to try!" California yells.
Russia pushes harder and ignores the sweat gathering on his brow. He leaps up over a punch from Ohio and blocks a knockout punch from California. He throws a swinging kick and knocks California onto her ass, and Russia grabs Ohio's fist, flipping him around and managing to throw him to the ground.
Ohio hit the mat with a gasp, and Russia huffs. Russia looks around, his fists at his sides. He's breathing heavily, and his hair feels wet with sweat.
"Jeez, you're better than I thought," California comments, standing up.
"I'm gonna be sore tomorrow," Ohio complains from the floor.
"Is the dancer over there doing well?" Canada asks, leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, did you see Russ jumping around?"
Russia looks away, his face red.
"He's better than I expected," Dixie comments, helping Nigeria to her feet.
Russia takes a deep breath and looks out the window. It's already dark, and Russia can't make out much. Looking back to the room, he spots Finland wrestling Wyoming on the mats. Oregon is trying to pull her off and is almost successful.
"Okay, kids!" Dixie announces, "That's enough for today! Everyone will be continuing tomorrow."
"Can we have dinner?" Pennsylvania asks.
"Yeah, y'all might just have to wait a few minutes so I can get something whipped up," Dixie says, walking briskly into the kitchen.
Kids cheer breathlessly, and most of them collapse to the mats, raising their hands in the air out of happiness. Russia sighs. He sits down next to America, who had drifted off against the arm of the couch. America stirs and looks up at him sleepily.
Then, America gives Russia a dopey smile. Butterflies fill Russia's stomach, and Russia looks away with a love-struck look.
"You have fun?" America asks.
"Yes," Russia mumbles, his face growing hot and he rubs the back of his neck.
"You should go shower," America suggests, "it's going to take a little while for Dixie to have much to serve."
Russia nods and America waves him off with a large smile. Russia walks up the stairs with thoughts swirling around America's smile. Russia walks into the doorframe with a conk.
'Oww.'

Haley: So how old are your guys’ parents, and did you ever growing up like regard them as like the old parents?
Alana: My… so my… Here's what's really fucking me up these days, is that Joe Biden graduated from the University of Delaware the same year my dad was born. So my dad was born in June of 1965 and Joe Biden graduated University of Delaware probably like May of 1965. So that's what's making me uncomfortable these days.
Lexi: You know when my mom graduated from the University of Delaware?
Alana: When?
Lexi: The nineties. (Laughing)
Alana: So my parents, they’re like kind of old. My mom was born in 1963, but my mom is also the third of four children.
Haley: Because my mom was born in ‘69 and my dad ‘67. And Robert’s parents… I don't know exactly when they were born but I know it's in the cluster of my parents. But my mom and dad were always regarded as like the younger parents. And it came up today because my sister's boyfriend's parents have always been regarded– my mom's like oh they’re older because my sister's boyfriend, Stephen, is the youngest of four. So my mom and dad got married three days after my mom graduated from college, but they waited seven years. Like they owned a freakin’ Subway and went backpacking in Europe before having me. Like they lived their life, if you will, and then they had kids. But all my friends, like growing up, all their parents are like five to ten years older than my parents.
Lexi: So my parents got married at twenty three.
Alana: Also ridiculous.
Lexi: They were born in 1972. No shade giving my mom’s age out, but honestly she's super young. We get mistaken for sisters no matter where we go, especially if we’re with my grandmother. They tell her she has two lovely daughters. I don't know if that's an insult to me or a compliment to my mother…
Haley: A compliment to your mother.
Alana: It’s definitely a compliment to your mother.
Lexi: My mother was invited to frat parties when she visited me in college several times.
Haley: No, your mother is smokin’ hot. Like my mother–
Lexi: She was the marching band MILF. Do you know the song Stacy's Mom?
Alana: Of course I know Stacy's Mom.
Lexi: The marching band, when we played it would sing Lexi’s mom.
Alana, singing: Lexi’s mom has got it goin’ on.
[INTRO MUSIC]
Alana: Hello and welcome to Lady History; the good, the bad, and the ugly ladies you missed in history class. by whipping sort of as always is Lexi Lexi what are you thankful for.
Lexi: I am thankful for you guys.
Alana: That’s gross. I am also joined(ish) by Haley. Haley, are you a white meat or dark meat kinda gal?
Haley: I really like– I guess like the– like a turkey leg? That’s dark meat. That’s my jam. I'm also not necessarily a turkey person.
Alana: And I'm Alana and I'm team captain of the cranberry sauce defense squad.
[Turkeys gobbling]
Alana: I don't think there is a good word for the people who were in the Americas before white people came to the Americas.
Lexi: There is not a good single word.
Haley: I also think that it's not us as non those people…
Alana: That's the thing. And that was the conversation that we had–
Haley: And I hate that I said “those people” because it shouldn’t be “those people” but like
but like for my grad school, we have a whole section of like repatriation, NAGPRA, all that lovely good stuff in our law class. And with our history and theory class there's always like this– kinda wanna call it a symposium?– We asked the question, and I think it was my professor who posed it, because she's like I have to talk about it and I'm a Jewish white woman. I know people like have their preference on Jewish people versus Jews and I want to be able to teach the correct thing. And everyone in the room said Native Peoples just because so many different tribes or groups don't consider themselves American. So that’s what I use. And I like that the like phrase and I’m probably– someone else probably saying this but I’m gonna make it up for myself right now; just go with what you know until you're proven wrong. Because like that's what I know and like for now.
Alana: But that's the thing that we were talking about not on the podcast, elsewhere, about how like I've never heard an actual Latinx person use the phrase Latinx.
Haley: I do not consider myself–
Alana: Except for on One Day at a Time actually.
Lexi: I feel like I always go with if I need to call someone something I'm going to ask them–
Haley: Yes.
Lexi: –What they identify as, and if I don't know them well enough to have that conversation maybe I shouldn't be speaking for them in any way… Or not speaking for them, but I shouldn't be like representing them. But it's really complicated when we talk about history because a lot of the words we use didn't exist then. Like Ida B. Wells considered herself Negro, and we wouldn't… we wouldn't probably use that word now.
Haley: Well like with pronouns. We don’t assume–
Alana: Exactly.
Haley: –pronouns. So like… Because I feel very weird when people like assume like my race or ethnicity. And I identify that… I identify with being Persian or Cuban more so than being a female if that makes sense.
Lexi: Right.
Haley: I've never… it's not like I'm non– like non binary. I identify as female but I've never been like a FEMALE.
Speaker 3: I feel like with gender it's so– so easy to once you decide to do it just start using they as a default when you're not sure what someone's preference is, and there's not that for race or ethnicity. There’s not like a default word where you can say a word and not be offensive. Like, okay. It's like the thing with the Washington Redskins which is now the Washington Football Team. There were a lot–
Alana: Which is what my cousin always called it. Was always calling it the Washington Football Team.
Lexi: Actually apparently they picked that because a lot of people did just call it that. But also it's not even in Washington DC so it frustrates the crap out of me. But apparently like a bunch of people were up in arms about it that were Native peoples but then a bunch of Native peoples were like nah it's chill. And so it's like you can't say that all these people agree on something.
Haley: Yeah.
Alana: Yeah.
Haley: That's where we go back to like–
Lexi: There isn't a single hive mind of all of these people you’re trying to represent. Everyone has these own little different versions. And so, you know, what I've been told by a lot of people is like narrow it down. Like for example if you're Omaha, you’re Omaha. If you’re Hoganashone you’re Hoganashone. Because that's how they like refer to themselves.
Haley: Yeah. Yes. And I’ve heard this too. Like– I’m gonna say this. I was on Tik Tok.
(Alana and Lexi laughing)
Lexi: Honestly cultural Tik Tok is very fun. Like culture-based Tik Tok.
Haley: I’ve landed myself on what was called by this group of Tik Tok– this flavor of Tik Tok– Native and Indigenous Tik Tok.
Lexi: Yeah I've seen that.
Haley: But I noticed that for the Tik Tok-ers who are in Canada would use Indigenous.
Alana: I will never tell someone of one group that something is not anti that group because I don't want gentiles to tell me what is and what is not antisemitic, I don't want men to tell me what is and is not misogynistic, I don't want… what's my other identity? Oh, I'm queer. I don't want straight people to tell me what is and is not homophobic–
Haley: “What's my other identity?”
Alana: “What’s my other identity?”
Lexi: “I can’t remember. I’ve got so many.”
Alana: What’s my other one? I’m like marginalized in three different ways and I don’t remember what the third one is.
Archival Audio: For our clinics are all specialized. Wednesday afternoons, for instance, we only see expectant mothers. But each one is a different problem, because each one is a different person. They feel they're special, too, and always seem amazed when they discover they have something in common with the other women, but that’s natural. After all, we all think of our health problems as personal problems.
Lexi: Today I'm going to tell you the story of Susan La Flesche, the first Native American to receive a medical degree. And as we discussed, we’re not sure exact on the terms people prefer. Susan lived a long time ago and regarded herself as Native American, that’s why I'm using that term, but I understand that some people may not use that term to refer to themselves. But she identified as that, so that's what I'm calling her. So yes, she was the first Native American to receive a medical degree. Susan was an Omaha woman. Her father Iron Eyes, or Chief Joseph La Flesche, the last Omaha chief selected by traditional tribal methods, and he was the son of a Frenchman and an Omaha woman so he was half French, half Omaha. And as a chief he believed the only way to save his people was to mix elements of their culture with Western culture and for his people to get an education. And it was these beliefs that shaped Susan's future. Her mother was One Woman, or Mary La Flesche, and Susan was born on the Omaha reservation in Nebraska in 1865. As a child Susan, witnessed a Native woman die because the local white doctor would not provide her care. This event sparked Susan’s interest in becoming a medical professional, with the goal of helping Native people. She attended a school on the reservation until she was fourteen and then she went to the Elizabeth Institute for Young Ladies in New Jersey. Can you imagine being fourteen years old and traveling from Nebraska to New Jersey on a train by yourself? That’s crazy. That’s absolutely crazy.
Alana: Goals. I wanna do it. I love trains. I love trains. I wanna do it.
Lexi: So I think she must have been really brave, because it just that's… that's pretty amazing. A long trip for a little girl.
Alana: Especially as like first of all it being a young woman which is already dangerous, no matter what, and she's also from this like marginalized community.
Lexi: Yes.
Alana: That it's like double dangerous, quadruple dangerous because she was fourteen.
Lexi: Yeah. It's crazy. It's crazy. Must’ve been really really brave. And really wanted to go to the school I guess. So she went there for three years and at seventeen Susan returned home and she taught at the Mission School on the Omaha reservation. At the school, she worked with Alice Fletcher, who was a white woman who was an ethnologist who studied and recorded American Indian culture. And she came to live and work with the Omaha because of her passion for archaeology so she wanted to study living people to better understand the past, which has been–
Alana: Ethnographic archaeology.
Lexi: Yeah it's a thing that a lot of archaeologists like to do. When Fletcher fell ill, Susan helped her recover, and after seeing Susan’s skills and passions for medicine and health care, Fletcher urged Susan to travel east and pursue a degree in medicine. Susan enrolled in the Hampton Institute, which was a school in Virginia that was built after the Civil War to educate formerly enslaved people and had since become a hub for educating Black Americans and American Indians. When Susan was attending Hampton, a woman named Dr. Martha Waldron was working as a teacher and the resident physician at the school. Martha was a graduate of the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and suggested that Susan pursue further education there. Alice Fletcher, who had encouraged Susan to study medicine, assisted Susan by helping her apply for scholarships from the US Office of Indian Affairs and the Women's National Indian Association. In 1889, after two years in a three year program, Susan graduated top of her class from medical school. She spent one year doing an internship, which was similar to a modern day medical residency program in Philadelphia and then she returned home. At home, she became the primary care provider for about twelve hundred people, working at the reservation’s boarding school. In 1894, she married Henry Picotte, a Sioux man who had previously been traveling and working in Wild West shows. And they kept it all in the family with Susan's sister Marguerite deciding to marry Harry's brother Charles. So… that’s… that’s fun! After getting married, Henry and Susan had two sons and Susan opened a private practice which served both non white and white patients in her community. When Henry fell ill, Susan personally nursed him, all while working full time and caring for their two sons. At the age of forty, Susan became partially deaf, but kept working. In addition to being a doctor, Susan ran a children's library, worked as a Sunday school teacher, founded a quilting club, translated legal papers, and advocated for prohibition. In 1913, she opened a reservation hospital serving Omaha and Winnebago tribes. It was the first private hospital on a reservation anywhere in the country. Today, the building is a museum dedicated to tribal history and telling the story of Susan. In 1915, at just fifty years old, Susan passed away. Susan was important to her people because as aspects of their culture were taken away from them, she was able to draw a balance between traditional medicine and the practices that she learned at Western medical school. This worked because many of her people were still unsure about Western medicine, so by mixing their traditional healing practices with Western practices, she was able to develop a culturally specific plan of treatment. Her people grew to trust her and she began to be regarded as a modern medicine woman. She is a great example of why cultural representation is important and can impact public health. I also highly suggest watching the PBS video that I linked on the tumblr in the further watching. It’s super well made and it tells a really wonderful version of her story in a lot more detail than we're able to cover on our show and it has really good tie-ins to modern needs of communities like Susan's and interviews some modern female doctors and their communities which is really cool. That’s it. Short one.
Haley: I like– I like that story a lot.
Alana: I like that story too.
Lexi: Yeah there's not a lot about her like…
Alana: Right.
Lexi: People don't record shit, so it’s mostly just her accomplishments, unfortunately.
(Audio from Night at The Museum)
Haley: So my story is about– drum roll please– the retelling of the story of Sacagawea. And for all of you who might be screaming my name right now, saying Hey I'm not pronouncing her name correctly, hold the phone we’ll get there. I first need to do my universal apologies for pronouncing any words, even historically American English words, incorrectly because we all know me; words aren't the greatest for my speech mouth. And to start us off, I'm switching over to the like I said that actual pronunciation– Saka-Gawea. And it's Sacagawea because in my research there's not a soft G in the Hidatsa language, which translates to bird woman. So side note, there are a bunch of different spellings, but if we're going based on the true like translation– Sa-Ka-Ga is bird, and it's spelled with a G. So Sacagawea is Sacajawea but just like–
Lexi: Can I just say, that's way prettier than Sacajawea.
Haley: Yeah because like for some Sacagawea it's like you have the G, or you have S. A. K. A. K. A. W. E. A, or instead of the G. it’s a J. But there's no hard – or, there's no soft Gs it's only hard Gs. And as a person who has a really hard time pronouncing things from reading because of the dyslexia spectrum that we know to love, it's gonna– it's gonna be balls to the walls bananas.
Alana: It's like… Was it the first Night at the Museum movie or the second Night at the Museum movie where she was like a character?
Lexi: The first.
Alana: The first one. And then the museum like–
Lexi, whispering: And then she fell in love with Theodore Roosevelt
Alana: Oh yeah, and then she fell in love with Theodore Roosevelt which was so… oh NO.
Haley: I’m glad you brought that up because I cut that part out.
Lexi: That’s a whole can of worms.
Alana: But like there's that whole thing about them pronouncing it wrong but it's always Sacaga-wee-ah or Sacaga-way-a, and I’m like both of you are wrong.
Haley: Glad you brought up Night at the Museum because I had a whole tangent on that but then I was like roll back Haley your notes are already long to begin with.
Alana: You cannot expect me to not bring up Night at the Museum if it is even tangentially relevant.
Lexi: I love them, I hate them. It's an incredible thing.
Haley: Yeah.
Alana: Rami Malek!
Haley: Yes he was–
Alana: My first love!
Haley: Back to the notes. So for our listeners out of the United States, you may have heard of Sacagawea, of course with the Lewis and Clark exploring the west. However, I'm sorry– not sorry– to say that there's a solid chance that what you learned was completely incorrect and I'm looking at you United States education system. All of y’all education system just– the poop garbage, dumpster fire, whatever you would like to say. But let me pause for a second and explain a little bit why that story is kind of messed up because not only do we have like a white savior complex with like Lewis and Clark, we also just have a lot of sexism. Like sexism is painted in semen here. Like all over the board. No menstrual blood whatsoever to like brighten up this dreary painting of shit. Alana’s face right now is… holy crap what is she saying.
Alana: It's just a little bit like– Lexi what's the word that I'm looking for that is like… the sentiment behind it is that not all men have semen that not all women menstruate. Do you know I mean? That's my thing with–
Lexi: There's a single word? There's a single word for that?
Alana: There’s like a word for something… like reducing it to… whatever.
Haley: Yes.
Alana: And transphobia isn't quite right.
Speaker 1: That’s exactly why I use the phrase all semen in here. Because it's totally like heterosexual men explaining–
Alana: Cis heterosexual men.
Haley: Yes.
Lexi: The cis white boys?
Haley: Yes.
Alana: The cis white boys.
Haley: The cis white boys. However, it's a reason why the paintbrush is a phallic symbol, that’s all I’m gonna say. And while I will probably not tell the most accurate story, it's gonna be a hell of a lot better than what we've been given to because… I'm gonna be up front. There's so much more research I could have done and that's with all our stories. Like I think I put like three hours at least into like average for each story, sometimes more. I put in a lot more for this one. While Sacagawea was a Native people who symbolized peace and cooperation as she like navigated Lewis and Clark– with you know, the baby strapped on her back that like famous trope we have– through the west and like the Pacific… to get to the Pacific Ocean. There's a lot more to that story. First, because their crew was a crew of forty plus people; it wasn't just like the three of them moseying along like a hundred percent of the time, but we'll get to that. And even before then, I don't know about you guys but I never heard of like her growing up or her as an actual Native person. It was always “she’s with Lewis and Clark. Like she with the white people now,” never her life story as a whole, just this one small part, but I learned about Lewis and Clark's whole life story. And boy Howdy am I gonna talk about how she saved all their collective buttholes. So, while this story is both Native people’s legend and journals from the Lewis and Clark that we keep talking about. And we know that oral tradition it still history. So there are holes obviously with this timeline, but we know that she was born, or we think she was born in the Shoshone tribe in Idaho and was kidnapped at age twelve, possibly age ten. What I didn't know though is that when she was kidnapped– I knew she was kidnapped, but this is bad, I didn't actually know who kidnapped her, and it was a neighboring tribe. I believe it was the Hidatsa tribe? It was noted as a rival tribe. And from there she was sold into slavery and forced to marry Toussaint Charbonneau– C. H. A. R. B. O. N. N. E. A. U., we’ll go with that– a French Canadian fur trapper who had other quote Shoshane “wives.” So this wasn't… this wasn't great. Like it wasn't great to begin with, but we're just like still riding that train of yes you're not gonna tell a bunch of elementary school kids this story but let's not paint the picture and happy childhood. And in 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark recruited no other than– I'm gonna call him TC, TC because I can't pronounce either of his names and I'm gonna keep fumbling on it– to be their wilderness guide. The geography of it was that the country almost doubled in size, but the history of it was the Louisiana Purchase was acquired by France.
Lexi: Acquired from France.
Haley: Yes. They were already on their expedition by the time they met up with TC and Sacagaweas. Sacagawea, who was sixteen and pregnant at the time, accompanied the men, and she was the only female of this shitshow of a shindig. And by shitshow of a shindig, this was like forty something other men with Lewis and Clark– like they had a whole rodeo. And we see this a lot that if people went on an expedition it wasn't just that group of people but they brought like their cooks, their wives, their children, people to like bring their food, i.e. like livestock because we didn't have fridges and such. So that like was not surprising to me. What was surprising was like that's a valuable teaching point, was just like to teach kids how did people move from place to place. And this is at the point where Clark notes that she was the most valuable member of their group, because although T. C. was like hired to give them like geography, he was like a noted French Canadian and a fur trapper, but noted as like he was not good at like navigating compared to Sacagawea and like the other Native peoples in the area. It was obvious and even Lewis and Clark were like “oh, she better” which she was. And she spoke both Shoshone and Hidatsa, and so she was like the interpreter for the white men, like literally. And that's the part like they got correct– and they being like the education system– that point was correct. She was interpreter, and shout out to the Brooklyn Museum for literally giving me the quote “interpreter for the group of white men”. Even the Brooklyn Museum’s not playing around. And obviously these white men weren't liked amongst the other Native peoples tribes, but when they saw a woman who wasn't considered to be a warrior– and that's like the key point– it wasn't just that they had a Native person with them. it was that she had a child with her, she spoke their language, and like didn't give off any alarm bells. Because also like there's that misconception that all Native peoples were friendly to each other. There are different like rivalries amongst tribes. That was just pure luck for them that that worked out. And so of course Lewis and Clark wanted to make their main man TC because his fur trapping knowledge and like how he knew the geography. And like I said that was… sure, he did some stuff. But Sacagawea basically said hold my beer, and she clearly knew where she was supposed to go. She clearly knew also just like the weather patterns, where to find food, and multiple occasions when they were like the Yellowstone area and it's really cold at night… we're in the parts where it's just snowing and dark for many many many parts of the winter. And she would like be able to not only like find but like somewhat grow or just like keep food in a way that like they would be able to sustain themselves with eating. So it was like a group effort by everyone. It wasn't just like Lewis and Clark being like “we got this, we’re gonna do it, we're gonna get to the Pacific Ocean in the middle of the winter.” Fast forward a bit– and there are a bunch of other stories of her being a complete badass, like diving into water when their canoe tips over and saving like all the important stuff; food, even like Lewis and Clark's journals. But we have to move forward, sadly, to the end of her expedition and just give her a well rounded story like I said. I wanted to hear this as a kid. And while the expedition ended in 1806, she kind of still knew Lewis and Clark. And let me do a side note here she did not receive payment for this expedition. Because like, yeah. That sounds like the right thing to do, I say with all my sarcastic cells in my body. There are a lot of them, by the way, so we're all doing a chorus of sarcastic singing. And three years later in 1809– another side note this is where at least my history kind of definitely has different stories, there's no concrete this is what happened…  There wasn't Snapchat recording everything, I guess. Clark invited Sacagawea and her family to live in Saint Louis and he also later adopted her son Jean Baptiste, and he called him Pompy, and a baby girl Lisette. And it's noted that she separated from T. C. who was abusive, but after this point like our timeline, we call dates in history, we know very little. And again, with this debated topic, her death is in that category. So records from Fort Manuel where like she lived there at a time, she supposedly died in December 1812 from typhus. And going off what Native peoples’ oral histories because again, oral histories are histories, she lived on the Shoshone lands in Wyoming until 1884. And regardless, Sacagawea clearly became somewhat of a legend with her own story being told by writers, filmmakers, historians in a time where women especially Native and/or Indigenous women, were absolutely thought of as weak, not helpful, and sometimes even dangerous. So you might be asking yourself, “Haley, where do I find other resources?” Obviously check out our show notes, they are quite lovely, and honestly children's books. The most recent ones were kind of on point. They're all about like– especially now in 2020. And then specifically in the show notes look at the Brooklyn Museum and the National Women's History Museum. And that is my story.
Alana: Hey National Women’s History Museum, do you want to give me an internship?
Haley, singing: Manifestation.
(Archival Violin Music)
Alana: Zitkala-Sa was born February 22, 1876, that makes her a Pisces. She's technically an Aquarius/Pisces cusp. And Zitkala-Sa means red bird in the Sioux language. She was born on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Her mother was Sioux and her father was white. Her father abandoned the family and initially when I see white father, Indigenous mother… that is alarm bells in my head, but she did have an older brother, so less alarm bells. Quieter alarm bells. And just as an FYI, a blanket statement, we had the discussion that we're not really sure if we should say Native or Indigenous so I kind of use both, mixing it up. If you know someone who has an opinion let us know and we’ll use that going forward. I think that's kind of a good general statement for this podcast; is correct us if we're wrong and we'll change our ways. Because that’s how you–
Haley: Correct us with kindness.
Alana: Oh, yeah. Correct us with kindness. Be nice.
Haley: We have feelings.
Alana: We can’t handle it. Don't be mean to me. At the age of eight, so 1884 she left the reservation when Quaker missionaries came to recruit for their– massive air quotes– school and it was only a school if by school you mean forced assimilation centers, but we'll get to that a little bit later. It was literally called the White’s Indiana Manual Labor Institute, and the U. S. is still racist, I'm not saying that it’s not racist, but at least we're not racist enough to let something with a name like that slide. I feel like… baby steps, little progress. Zitkala-Sa’s mother didn't want her to go because her brother had come back from a school and she didn't like it but Zitkala-Sa begged and begged because for kids who had never left the reservation, it seemed like a magical place and it sounded so cool. Her mother did eventually acquiesce because there were no schools on the reservation and she really wanted Zitkala to have an education. But she later wrote that the second she got on the train to Indiana she regretted fighting so hard for it. She was forced to cut her hair and pray like a Quaker, which she hated. Pray like a Christian is like…  that's intergenerational trauma in my heart. She actually hid from the people who were working at the school and they had to tie her to a kitchen chair and cut her hair. I don't know if it was actually a kitchen chair, I just wanted to make a Leonard Cohen reference. Hey Alana, are you Jewish? Yes. But she really did enjoy learning how to read and write and to play the piano and the violin. She was given the name Gertrude Simmons, which is a footnote that will only come up at the very end of the story. In 1887, she returned to her mother's home but she felt like she didn't belong there. And this was a common theme among children who had been sent to these– massive air quotes– schools because they felt like they didn't really belong to their Indigenous culture but they also weren't really like the white Americans. In 1895, she enrolled at Earlham College for a teacher training program and then transferred to the New England conservatory to continue studying violin. In 1900, she became a music teacher at the Carlisle Indian School but left because it reminded her of her traumatic experiences at a similar school. She basically came to the realization, she was just like “oh shit, they are designed to take our culture from us.” She was like “I couldn’t be part of that anymore.” In 1901, she published Old Indian Legends, which was a compilation of all of her previous writings and culminated in a lifelong project of translating Sioux traditions into English, because this is a quote from her from the beginning of the book, “America in the last few centuries has acquired a second tongue,” which is so shady. And I love it. “Acquired a second tongue” is just like. Mm. So also in 1901 she went back to South Dakota and took a job at the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, which I will refer to going forward as the B. I. A., where she met Captain Raymond Bonnin, who was also a Sioux, but I couldn't find what his like Sioux name was, since he was also full Sioux, but probably not Raymond. But then they did have a son and name him Raymond so I’m not sure.I don't know. They were transferred to Utah, where Zitkala-Sa taught again, but not at a white school, at a reservation school where the children lived at home and she found that like to be a balance. In 1910, she met William Hansen who was a music professor at Brigham Young University, and in 1913 they completed The Sun Dance Opera which was about a Sioux ritual that the federal government had banned, which I think is… What a workaround. What a way to beat the system. She viewed music as a way to bridge the cultures that she was a part of and it did, and that culminated in The Sun Dance Opera. She joined the Society of American Indians, which is a group that lobbied for citizenship for Indigenous people and cultural preservation because nuance. Which is a thing that I am feeling recently. Just nuance. Tattoo it on my forehead, shout it from the rooftops. Nuance. She became the secretary of the Society of American Indians and started interacting directly with the B. I. A. where her husband worked. She was very critical and vocal of their policies because they wanted her to pray like a Christian which– (frustration noises). The intergenerational trauma, she just– she do be jumping out. And her husband was fired. Was it because of her criticism of the B. I. A? Maybe? Who’s to say? I can't say, but maybe. But they moved to Washington DC, where she started giving lectures about cultural identity and continued her work with the Society of American Indians. She even was briefly the editor of American Indian magazine. In 1924 she became active in the General Federation of Women's Clubs, which was like a women's rights group but make it intentionally diverse. It was grassroots campaigns to support women of all backgrounds, and we simply have no choice but to stan.
Lexi: Intersectional feminism.
Alana: Intersectional feminism. We love it, we love to see it, we love to see intersectional feminism like in the twentieth century, before it was cool, if you will. She started a universal Indigenous movement that led to the passage of the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act which, as the name implies, gave Indigenous people citizenship but not necessarily the right to vote because that was still up to the states. In 1926, she co founded with her husband the National Council of American Indians to continue lobbying for the rights of Indigenous people. She died January 26, 1938 at the age of not quite sixty two and is buried in Arlington Cemetery with her husband. Her gravestone reads Gertrude Simmons and then Zitkala-Sa which makes me feel a little bit weird but at least it's on there. I don't know if she like had a choice what went on there but I think it's cool that it's on there. And she was the first Indigenous woman to write her own autobiography without the help of an editor or translator because she was just good at English. She was also very anti use of peyote, which is really interesting because she was like alcoholism on the reservations is a huge problem and so we need to like do something about our ingesting of substances. It’s like all these things are about nuance which is something that I'm again I'm feeling so so much about nuance. It's something that I've been working on in therapy for like three years. That's not true, for two years. That I'm just like we can have two things that coexist– that like it would be in everybody's best interest to be an American citizen, but that doesn't necessarily mean that all of these Native people have to abandon their rituals and their culture. It’s that whole melting pot thing which is such a like when you think about a kind of a weird image… put people in a melting pot. Anyway. That’s a fun note to end on. That’s all I have to say.
Lexi: I just want to add that I think I've mentioned this before on the podcast but I worked on a project at the Smithsonian Libraries called Women in America: Extra and Ordinary. I'm the one who suggested this lady because I thought Alana would like learning about this lady, and I just want to kind of talk about a little bit why I put her in the project. The thing that I love about her is that the Portrait Gallery has pictures of her that were taken when she was quite young. I believe in her twenties.
Alana: They’re gorgeous.
Lexi: And they're beautiful because they're so like real. Like–
Alana: I think my favorite one is– now that I've mentioned it Lexi, you probably have to use it in the graphic– but it's her having grown her hair back out with her violin.
Lexi: Yes.
Alana: And it's just like how it's like… Once you know the background of that, it's like this is how she combined these two cultures by like really enjoying playing the violin and also having her long traditional hair.
Lexi: She’s just so like… It's like she could be your friend. Like she’s just a real person. And so like, I don't know. They’re good pictures. Go look at her pictures.
Alana: Go to the show notes, look at the pictures, they’re great pictures.
Lexi: And– Okay, I think– Okay, this is the root of it. I think when you see pictures of Native peoples from that time, so many times it's like they're wearing like outfits that aren't even correct for their culture and they were forced to pose in like ridiculous like customized versions of their own culture. Like I've seen ones where people who weren’t Plains Indians were put in Plains Indians’ attire for pictures. But like she's just hanging out and I really like that. I just love her. So much.
Alana: She’s so cool.
Lexi: And her name means red bird.
Alana: And her name means red bird, and Lexi loves birds. Lexi loves birds.

Dueling versions of reality define 1st week of fall campaign (AP) On the campaign trail with President Donald Trump, the pandemic is largely over, the economy is roaring back, and murderous mobs are infiltrating America’s suburbs. With Democrat Joe Biden, the pandemic is raging, the economy isn’t lifting the working class, and systemic racism threatens Black lives across America. The first week of the fall sprint to Election Day crystallized dizzyingly different versions of reality as the Republican incumbent and his Democratic challenger trekked from Washington and Delaware to Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and back, each man on an urgent mission to sell his particular message to anxious voters. All the conflicting messages carry at least a sliver of truth, some much more than others, as the candidates fight to navigate one of the most turbulent election seasons in modern history.
Love or hate them, pandemic learning pods are here to stay (Washington Post) Some love them. Some hate them. But nobody working in education today can escape pandemic learning pods: the increasingly popular phenomenon in which families band together and hire a private tutor to offer in-person learning to a small group of children. Teachers throughout the nation are sketching out schedules and pondering whether they can squeeze in pod tutoring after virtual school. They are weighing health risks, deciding on ground rules—should all pod students wear masks?—and asking parents how much they will pay. (A lot, it turns out.) Sometimes, they are quitting their jobs to lead pods instead. That is what Kendra Newton is doing: The 24-year-old first-grade teacher resigned from her job with Orange County Public Schools in Florida after learning she would have to teach in-person this fall. She is moving across the country to Oregon, where she will lead a pod of eight students—for a higher salary than she earned in Florida. “It gave me a way to feel safe working,” Newton said. “I will have guaranteed money coming in and a stable idea of what my life will be like because there won’t be a school district changing its mind every two seconds. For my mental health, it’s just a better option.”
Americans see skepticism of news media as healthy, say public trust in the institution can improve (Pew Research Center) Many Americans remain skeptical toward the news media, questioning not only the quality of journalists’ work but the intentions behind it. For instance, no more than half of U.S. adults have confidence in journalists to act in the best interests of the public, and Americans are more likely than not to say that news organizations do not care about the people they report on. Yet three-quarters also are open to the possibility that Americans’ trust in the media could improve.
With office life dormant, white-collar Washington is adrift (Washington Post) Greg Crist is a D.C. lobbyist who used to wear suits, and go to lunch, and spend his days taking meetings on the Hill, or in his nicely appointed office at 701 Pennsylvania Ave. Now that his office is closed because of the pandemic, Crist is a man who commutes a few hundred feet from his Alexandria, Va., home to his silver Audi, where he spends much of the day taking calls in the only place where the important people on the other end of the line cannot hear his toddler son scream. Much of white-collar Washington has accepted the reality that it may be a long time before it returns to the office, or the office-adjacent customs of the city’s glad-handing classes: the power lunches, the networking receptions, the comped sports tickets and day trips to New York on the Acela. “Initially I thought, ‘Well, I’ll be back at work by Easter,’ ” says Crist, the chief advocacy officer and head of external affairs at AdvaMed, a medical technology trade association. Easter turned into June, which turned into Labor Day, which turned into a big question mark. The politicos and super-connecters are achy, stuck at home, stranded on the other side of the work-life divide. The lobbyists are without their lobbies. The conference denizens haven’t donned a lanyard in months. That infamous D.C. conversation-starter, “What do you do?,” has a new answer: I sit at home, stare at my screen, fend off my kids, try to keep it together. You?
Mexico states run out of death certificates (AP) The coronavirus pandemic has hit Mexico so hard that the governments of several states ran out of death certificates. Officials said Friday the federal forms started running out about 15 to 20 days ago in at least three states—Baja California, the State of Mexico and Mexico City. Authorities say a million new forms have been printed and are being distributed. The certificates are printed with special characteristics because falsification has been a problem in the past. Mexico has suffered the fourth-highest level of COVID-19 deaths in the world.
Washington firm ran fake Facebook accounts in Venezuela, Bolivia and Mexico, report finds (Washington Post) When Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself the nation’s legitimate president in January 2019, an Instagram account, @FrenteLibreVzla, posted a video declaring him a “new leader” who would bring freedom to the embattled nation, according to a research report published Friday. Those watching the video had no way of knowing the account was based not in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, but downtown Washington, managed by a strategic communications firm with clients across Latin America. The firm, CLS Strategies, this week became the latest communications company to be chastised by Facebook for using fake accounts—including on Instagram, a Facebook subsidiary—to secretly manipulate politics in another country, in violation of Facebook’s prohibition on foreign interference. Facebook announced Tuesday it had closed 55 accounts, 42 pages and 36 Instagram accounts linked to CLS Strategies that targeted politics in Venezuela, Bolivia and Mexico. The effort spent $3.6 million in advertising across all three countries, a sum that Facebook executives said was notable for its size and reflective of what happens when actors with deep pockets mount a disinformation operation. The pages had amassed more than 500,000 followers. The operation by the public relations company is an example, the report says, of how Americans sow disinformation in foreign countries.
Coronavirus Crisis Shatters India’s Big Dreams (NYT) The hit that India’s dreams have taken from the coronavirus pandemic can be found in the hushed streets of Surat’s industrial zone. You can see it in textile mills that took generations to build but are now sputtering, eking out about a tenth of the fabric they used to make. You can see it in the lean faces of the families who used to sew the finishing touches on saris but, with so little business, are now cutting back on vegetables and milk. Not so long ago, India’s future looked entirely different. It boasted a sizzling economy that was lifting millions out of poverty, building modern megacities and amassing serious geopolitical firepower. It aimed to give its people a middle-class lifestyle, update its woefully vintage military and become a regional political and economic superpower that could someday rival China, Asia’s biggest success story. But the economic devastation in Surat and across the country is imperiling many of India’s aspirations. The Indian economy has shrunk faster than any other major nation’s. As many as 200 million people could slip back into poverty, according to some estimates. Many of its normally vibrant streets are empty, with people too frightened of the outbreak to venture far.
India and China agree to ease tension on border (Reuters) India and China said on Saturday they had agreed to work towards reducing tensions along their contested border, following a meeting of the defense ministers of the nuclear-armed Asian giants. Both sides deployed additional forces along the frontier running through the western Himalayas after a clash in June, during which 20 Indian soldiers were killed in hand-to-hand fighting. China has not released casualty figures for its troops. In the highest level face-to-face political contact between India and China since tensions first flared along the border in May, defense ministers Rajnath Singh of India and General Wei Fenghe of China met late on Friday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Moscow. Both countries agreed that “neither side should take any further action that could either complicate the situation or escalate matters in the border areas,” India’s defense ministry said in a statement.
Super Typhoon Haishen aims for calamitous strike on Japan, S. Korea (Washington Post) Super Typhoon Haishen is roiling the unusually warm waters of the Western Pacific Ocean. The storm rapidly intensified on Thursday Eastern time, vaulting from Category 2 to super typhoon status with sustained winds of 150 mph or greater in about 24 hours. Super Typhoon Haishen is poised to strike the same areas as Typhoon Maysak, which hit South Korea early Thursday local time, to become the second typhoon to make landfall there and in southwestern Japan in just one week. The back-to-back typhoon strikes may worsen the damage, since infrastructure has been weakened by strong winds, heavy rains and storm-surge flooding, only to be hit again.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews clash with secular Israeli officials over coronavirus measures (Washington Post) Israel’s rapidly escalating coronavirus crisis is aggravating a religious divide in the Jewish state, with ultra-Orthodox leaders accusing mostly secular health officials of discrimination and fostering anti-Semitism by focusing on outbreaks in highly observant communities. As the government struggles to contain the outbreak, ultra-Orthodox Jewish rabbis, cabinet ministers and parliament members have resisted attempts to curtail activities in ultra-Orthodox areas, including many that have emerged as covid-19 hot spots. Facing particular ire has been Ronni Gamzu, the pugnacious former hospital administrator appointed last month as the government’s “corona czar.” Gamzu has clashed with religious leaders over his efforts to impose targeted lockdowns on neighborhoods with high infection rates, block a yearly pilgrimage to the grave of a revered Hasidic rabbi in Ukraine and compel virus testing for thousands of foreign students who have recently arrived to attend religious schools, or yeshivas. Gamzu said last week that 80 percent of the most recent coronavirus cases occurred in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods. The government expects to enact targeted restrictions Monday in 10 hot spot communities, many of them ultra-Orthodox. The tensions have riven Israel’s coronavirus cabinet, the government body that sets policy. On Friday, one day after Israel recorded 3,141 new cases—the largest single day per capita increase in any country since the pandemic began—cabinet discussions grew heated over proposed lockdowns during the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur later this month.
Sudan declares state of emergency over deadly floods (AP) Sudanese authorities declared their country a natural disaster area and imposed a three-month state of emergency across the country after rising floodwaters and heavy rainfall killed around 100 people and inundated over 100,000 houses since late July. Flooding caused by seasonal heavy rainfall, mostly in neighboring Ethiopia, led the Nile River to rise about 17.5 meters late in August, the highest level it has reached in about a century according to the Sudanese Irrigation Ministry.

hi! i'm a high-schooler who wants to pursue a career in classics and ancient history and you're a massive inspiration to me, I was wondering if you have any advice for an aspiring classicist
Hey! I’m glad to be an inspiration :3
So, the first thing I would suggest is to read, read, read. I know it’s expensive to get a lot of books, but remember that public libraries (and check your high school library, too!) might have many of the books you might want to read before you head into a Classics program.
If you would prefer to have these things online so you can access a lot of different things, here are my favorite websites to refer to:
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/
https://www.gutenberg.org/
http://www.sacred-texts.com/search.htm
The next thing to remember is that if you’re an undergraduate student, you’re not going to know everything in every class. Be open to exploring - take courses that have a focus on the ancient world, but don’t be afraid to stray into other courses (I took enough Medieval courses (history, literature, art history) that I was one course away from a minor). One of the things that I would recommend is searching for schools that have a program you think you’ll enjoy and e-mail the professors! I e-mailed the director of the Classical Studies department at Villanova University back and forth for a long time before I applied to the graduate program and she was quite supportive and explained things well to me. This was a big reason I decided that I decided that Villanova was right for me. The professors and how they interact with potential students will tell you a lot about the faculty as well as the program. Look through the potential courses at the universities you’re interested in, and whether they have all the courses, you would be interested in, including courses for other aspects of the field.
Classics courses can be under Anthropology or Archaeology, Art History, English/Literature, Greek/Latin, Library Sciences, Law, Museum Studies, Theatre, etc. If you’re interested in exploring any of these areas of Classics, I would suggest exploring these courses if the university offers them as well. This would also help you hone in on what area of the field you might be most interested in pursuing - a lot of people who go into Classics either end up teaching or working in a museum, from my experience. However, those aren’t your only choices, and we’ll get back to that more towards the end :3
If you’re not sure if you’d like archaeology, if you can afford an archaeological field school, I would say try to participate in one when you’re an undergraduate student, or if you can’t, see if your local state parks have any need for archaeological volunteers. That’s something that I’ve been investigating in Las Vegas (where I live); this isn’t Classics specifically, but much of the work will be similar so you can gauge whether you like digging enough to do it for a living. This past summer I did my first archaeological field school (three years after I completed my B.A. in History/Classics), so if you wait a little longer, that’s okay, too. But, I loved it, and I definitely want to dig again, so I think that it’s important to find a way to pursue those opportunities when you can (I was lucky to get a full-time job a year before I went and was able to save up - I didn’t take any vacation time in the year and a half from when I was hired until after the field school). There are field school scholarships that you can apply to, like the Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship (https://www.archaeological.org/grants/708), that are for students pursuing their first field school, amongst other funding, so make sure you look everywhere and ask your university if they have a database for field school funding. A lot of your anthropology and archaeology professors will be helpful in asking about this. Your university might also have archaeology opportunities on campus as well; my alma mater, the University of Delaware, had an Archaeology Laboratory that I volunteered in for extra credit and continued to do so once my course was over because I enjoyed it so much. See what’s around and how you can help out!
In the same vein, if you’re interested in museum work, look to see if you can volunteer over the summer, or once you’re a university student, see if you can enroll in an internship for credit. Sometimes your university galleries and museums might have a program, so look into that, too! I did a Curatorial Apprenticeship Program at the University of Delaware and was able to conduct an Independent Study for credit through the museum program (now the University of Delaware has a Museum Studies minor). I’ve always known that my end goal was to be a curator, but there’s plenty of other aspects of museums you can explore: education, administration, museum libraries, and a lot of other departments, depending on the size of the institution. If you’re in the U.S., you can check my museum post to see if your state has ancient art (https://theancientgeekoroman.tumblr.com/post/179105816745/master-list-of-museums-with-greek-roman), and if you’re in another country, don’t worry, I’m working on master lists for other countries, too.
Many courses may be taught in translation (especially if you’re taking it as an English Literature or Foreign Language in Translation course), so see if you can find the best or most highly recommended translations by professors. See what the book lists are for the courses at the universities you’re looking at and try to find your favorite translation. I just bought the Emily Wilson translation of The Odyssey, which I have a feeling will be my favorite translation. This is The Iliad translation I have (http://www.librarything.com/work/3426497/book/161094444), The Aeneid (http://www.librarything.com/work/11862/book/161072440), Metamorphoses (http://www.librarything.com/work/3439/book/161072432), and The Love Songs of Sappho (http://www.librarything.com/work/237534/book/161093187). All of these were assigned textbooks for my Biblical and Classical Literature and Mythology courses at the University of Delaware between 2007-2015 (those links take you to my LibraryThing, which will tell you most of the books that I own or I have on my wishlist, if you want to check them out; I haven’t finished organizing their categories yet, though, so it’s a WIP).
If you haven’t been exposed to Ancient Greek or Latin at the high school level and university will be the first time you encounter these languages (as was true for me), you don’t necessarily have to know anything by the first day of class. However, if you would like a head start, here are some lessons on Ancient Greek in YouTube format (http://www.openculture.com/2016/08/learn-ancient-greek-in-64-free-lessons-from-brandeis-harvard.html) and in text format (https://lrc.la.utexas.edu/eieol/grkol). Latin, unsurprisingly, has a lot more resources for free online learning (I even bought a Udemy course to review my Latin): The University of Texas at Austin: https://lrc.la.utexas.edu/eieol/latol, http://learn101.org/latin.php, and this list is good to consult: https://www.omniglot.com/language/articles/latinapps.htm. I haven’t used all of these myself, so explore and see which ones would be best for you and works best for how you learn.
If you decide to continue with Classics into the graduate level, keep in mind that you’ll need German AND French or Italian. I took both French and Italian as an undergraduate and I can read French pretty well because I took it for four years in high school and studied abroad in Caen for five weeks as an undergraduate. Italian I can kind of read alright, but I know no German, which I need to work on. So, if you have a language requirement and your Latin or Greek does not count, keep those languages in mind. (Sometimes you have to take a certain amount of Latin or Ancient Greek for it to count, and your program may not require as many ancient language courses for your major as the language requirement for the university, etc. I only needed to take Ancient Greek or Latin, but I decided I wanted to do both.)
Classics is an extremely interdisciplinary field, so you have a lot of options, both as an undergraduate and a graduate student. You don’t necessarily need to go straight into graduate school, either. You can teach at the high school level, you can go into archaeology fieldwork or museum work, or do a variety of other things. It’s up to you. I took a year off, got a different Master of Arts degree before I applied to my M.A. in Classical Studies. It’s different for everyone. I’ll be 30 when I get my M.A. in Classical Studies, so take your time and explore things that call to you. Don’t rush things and have fun!
Of course, I’m sure you want to know “What can I do with a Classics degree?” Luckily, many places have already made lists like this! Here they are:
https://www.angelo.edu/services/career/majors/classics.php
https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/careers/subjects/classics/
https://classicalstudies.org/education/careers-for-classicists/an-undergraduate-degree-in-the-classics

https://www.prospects.ac.uk/careers-advice/what-can-i-do-with-my-degree/classics
And I made a post with different places that post Classics positions as well, for when you’re ready to look for those (I check them regularly to see the requirements people want for these positions to either match up or if I need further training or credentials): https://theancientgeekoroman.tumblr.com/post/178955792555/since-im-still-in-my-ma-program-for-classical
TLDR & recap:
Read, read, read
Research your potential schools
Volunteer
Explore aspects of the field
Have fun!
Additionally, I found this list of people that have Classics degrees :3
https://rogueclassicism.com/folks-you-didnt-know-maybe-had-classics-degrees/
I hope you found this helpful and I apologize for the length, but feel free to drop me a line whenever you like if you need more advice or would like me to expand on any of my experiences!
All the best,
The Ancient Geeko-Roman
P.S. Folklore Fiancé wanted to make sure I didn’t overwhelm you and wanted to encourage you to make sure you take your time and take breaks when studying. Don’t overwhelm yourself with your research; take your time to explore different areas and don’t tackle too many things at once. *takes off parent hat*

Babymoon

Babymoon
Summary: Scully is in the second trimester of her second pregnancy, and Mulder decides to take her on a “Babymoon” in the Nation’s Summer Capital, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Written as part of the “50 States of Sex: A Map of Us” challenge, so definitely NC-17 and NSFW.
This is set in the same “universe” as my Next Files series, but it’s not necessary to have read that to understand this story. If you are reading it, this will tide you over until the next installment.

“I look like a beached whale, Mulder!”
Scully sat back in the passenger seat of their SUV, looking forlornly at her pregnant belly. She was 21 weeks along, and the pregnancy website said that her baby was as big as an endive now.
That website. The same blasted website that gave Mulder the bright idea for this whole “Babymoon” thing. Every Wednesday, he checked that damn website, told her what kind of fruit or vegetable Lily was, and rattled off all of the advice he found there as if it were Gospel Truth handed down on stone tablets:
“Come on, Scully,” he pleaded. “The website says that the second trimester is the best time to take a babymoon because you’ll be feeling at your best then.”
Scully rolled her eyes at the word. “That’s a marketing term coined by the travel industry, Mulder.”
“But Jackson found us some great Airbnb’s in Rehoboth!” he pointed at his computer screen. “Look!”
Scully sighed. Whenever Mulder wanted her to agree to something she was skeptical about, he’d get their son involved, and it was two against one. She looked forward to having a daughter in the house, if for no other reason than to balance out the “teams.” She loved her boys, but living with two Mulder men could be trying. “Jackson just wants the house to himself.”
Mulder laughed. “I know better than that, Scully. Remember, I WAS a 17-year-old boy. Anything he’s thinking of doing, I already did it and bought the tee-shirt. He’s going to be staying with John and Monica.”
“What about the dog? I don’t feel comfortable boarding him.”
“They said they can watch him, too.”
“What about the class you’re teaching?”
“We’ll only be gone for a few days. I can get someone to cover it.”
Dammit, he’d covered all the bases. “But why does it have to be the beach? I got huge with Jackson, and I think I’m going to be bigger this time. I’m already bigger now at this stage than I was with him. Can’t we go to the mountains or someplace else that doesn’t involve swimwear?”
“But Sculleeeeeee. Summer is for the beach. Look at this house here.” He pointed to a particular listing. “It’s three blocks from the beach and has a nice yard with a privacy fence, WiFi, and cable. I think you’re beautiful, but if you’re really that self-conscious about putting on a bathing suit, you don’t have to.”
“Mmmffh.” Scully looked at the listing. They hadn’t taken a vacation in years, not since before their separation. The rental did look quite nice, a brightly painted cottage with a beautifully landscaped yard, a back deck with a grill area, and a rather large clawfoot tub in the bathroom. She couldn’t quite contain her delight when she saw the tub, and Mulder beamed at her. “Okay, well, so long as you don’t insist that I put on a bathing suit if I don’t want to…”
“Great! I’ve booked it for the third week of June!”
Scully raised an eyebrow at him. “Really, Mulder? Fine. Since you decided to play it that way, you’re taking me to the outlet mall for some tax-free shopping.”
And that’s how she ended up in an SUV speeding its way to the Nation’s Summer Capital. When Mulder booked the trip, she’d been 14 weeks. She felt like she’d grown twice as big in the interim. She’d steeled herself and bought a maternity swimsuit and a coverup, but she wasn’t sure she’d feel comfortable wearing it on a crowded public beach.
Mulder spat a sunflower seed husk out the window. “I think you’re getting more beautiful every day, honey.” He reached over the center console and squeezed his wife’s hand. They’d been married for just over two months. “Hey, I just realized. This is our first vacation as a married couple.”
Scully smiled. She was happy with their lives and their household, and she’d even embraced her late-life pregnancy, as had Mulder. She knew he couldn’t wait to be a dad again, and to be around this time. “I just don’t know if I want to wear the swimsuit.”
“Don’t you have a cover thingie for it? Put that over it.”
“I’m just worried about people looking at me on the beach. People look at me weird in stores sometimes.”
“Fuck people. In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve never cared about what other people think of me, and I’m sure as hell not starting now. You are not spending your pregnancy sequestered in our house because of the ignorant opinions of asshole strangers.”
He’d promised her that they weren’t going to jet around the country doing field work anymore, and he’d kept that promise. They ran their own consulting firm now, taking the cases they wanted, providing expert advice, and letting other people chase human and supernatural perps around. Mulder also taught a couple of days a week at Quantico, but Scully’s doctor had relegated her to desk work for the duration of her pregnancy. She had nearly exclusively been working from home, on the computer. It kept her mind active and engaged, but she wasn’t going out very much, and Mulder feared the isolation was making her apprehensive when she did have to venture out in public. He, of all people, understood the dangers of too much isolation. This had been one of the reasons he’d booked the vacation. She needed to get out of that house more often.
Traffic was steady on Route 1 in Delaware as they approached Rehoboth, but it wasn’t gridlocked. While the beach town attracted tourists year-round, it wasn’t as crowded in June as it would be in July and August. They stopped at a grocery store to buy some essentials, then headed for their rental.
Scully looked around as Mulder texted their host, letting her know they’d arrived, and unloaded the car. The canary yellow cottage was small but had more than enough space for only two people, with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a full kitchen. The house had central air and ceiling fans throughout, and the host had provided everything except sheets and towels. The backyard was enclosed by a privacy fence and had a deck, an outdoor table and chair set, and a large charcoal grill. Next to the gate that provided access from the driveway was an outdoor shower with a sign reading, “Please rinse off sand after returning from beach.”
She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, listening to the seagulls and smelling the slight tinge of salt in the air. She felt Mulder’s arms encircle her from behind. “Getting your zen on, Scully?”
She leaned back into him. “You were right. This is nice.”
He kissed the top of her head. “We have a couple of hours before dinner. Why don’t we go sit on the beach for a while?”
Scully was nervous about putting on a bathing suit, but she reminded herself that it would be silly to come to a beach town and not go to the beach. “Okay, let’s give it a shot.”
She had purchased a simple black one-piece swimsuit paired with a colorful, mosaic-patterned cover-up that tied in the front and was long enough on her to pass as a mini-dress. She knew Mulder had bought a new pair of swim trunks for the trip, but he hadn’t let her see them. When he pulled them out of his suitcase, she understood why: They were patterned with alternating green alien heads and avocado halves set against a space-sky background. Her eyes grew wide, and she burst into laughter. “Oh my GOD, Mulder! You are not seriously intending to wear those, are you?”
“It’s either these, or this pair. Which one do you prefer?” He grinned as he yanked out another pair of trunks featuring a pair of aliens entangled in various sexual positions.
She erupted into a fit of giggles. “You are BAD.”
“And you are beautiful.” He pulled her into a kiss.
 “I’m fat.”
“You’re PREGNANT.” He lifted up her shirt and stooped down to give her growing belly a kiss. “You have no idea how sexy I find you right now.”
She looked down, saw the love in his eyes, and felt a stirring between her legs. Despite her misgivings about the changes in her body, her libido had been in full swing courtesy of her second-trimester hormones. Lately, a mere glance from her husband had been enough to turn her on, and they’d been having sex every day, often more than once.
Mulder saw the look in her face and stood back up. “Later,” he whispered in her ear. “I want to take you to the beach first.”
 ********************************
While the cars crowding Rehoboth Avenue made it obvious that the summer tourist season had arrived, the beach itself wasn’t terribly crowded. They easily found a nice spot, and Mulder set up their beach gear: chairs, beach towels, and an umbrella. Scully made herself comfortable with a book as he removed his plain black tee-shirt – she was surprised he hadn’t chosen something obnoxious to wear on top – to go in the water.
He held out his hand to her. “Let’s go in the water, Scully.”
She looked up at him and gestured to her book. “You go ahead. Maybe later.”
She still had her cover-up on. Mulder decided not to pressure her and made his way to the ocean himself. She watched him as he walked away, admiring his form. Not only had he continued his exercise regimen, but he’d amped it up and was tracking his protein consumption to add size. The result was a hard, muscled body that many men half his age envied. His arms, back, and chest had grown absolutely huge. Scully noticed more than a few women (some of them half his age as well) looking in his direction and smiled. She wasn’t jealous; she knew he paid them no mind. Her weird, wonderful husband was all hers. She shifted her attention to her book.
After sitting for a while, she felt hot in her cover-up but was still timid about removing it. She looked around at the other people on the beach and reasoned with herself. Mulder was by far the most fit person there right now; most of the other beachgoers looked like anyone else on the street, imperfect bodies and all, and many of them had on swimwear that was far more revealing than her own. No one is even looking at you, she told herself as she removed her cover-up, then sat back down and returned to her reading.
After a few minutes, Mulder padded back to their area, pushing water off himself. “My beautiful beach bunny,” he said as he bent down to kiss her. He tasted like saltwater and sunflower seeds. “Come in the water with me; it’s great.” She hesitated, and he nuzzled her neck. “I’ll give you a prize if you do.”
She giggled, but his hot breath on her neck was sending tingles through her body. “Okay, but not for too long.”
He grinned and helped her up. Scully felt the little girl in her come out as he held her hand and they walked towards the water. She remembered holding her mother’s hand and being led to play in the ocean, and she remembered getting old enough to go in the water by herself. She remembered sand castles, ice cream, sunblock, and the smell of Noxzema when she didn’t put enough sunblock on. It occurred to her that she would soon be taking her own daughter to the beach and making the same memories.
The water was a bit cool, albeit refreshing after sitting on the beach. They went in deeper and joined hands so they could jump waves together. She shrieked when he put his muscular arms under her back and legs, picked her up, and held her as the waves rolled past them. “Lucky me; I caught a mermaid!” They kissed again, and he put her back down. They spent some time playing in the water, splashing and chasing each other and jumping waves. Scully enjoyed the buoyancy; she’d been feeling a bit unsteady on her feet due to her center of gravity having moved, and being in the water let her move smoothly and freely, without fear of falling.
He lifted her back up again to kiss her, then looked into her eyes. “I remember the first time I saw you laugh like that, in the rain in Oregon. I had this – feeling. I don’t know how to describe it. It was like I knew you’d be by my side forever.”
She blushed. “I thought you were crazy, but there was something about you. I didn’t know what it was, but I was drawn to you.”
He grinned. “You couldn’t help yourself. I’m irresistible. It’s only natural that you’d throw yourself at me.” She rolled her eyes, and he pulled her into another kiss. Their kisses deepened as a few more waves washed over them, and Mulder put her back down when he felt himself getting hard despite the cool water. “Let’s go dry off for a while.”
 ***************************************
They spent about an hour enjoying the beach before heading back to the house. On the way, they stopped to buy fudge and salt water taffy from a boardwalk shop. Scully had been having cravings for junk food, and Mulder indulged her. He enjoyed her uninhibited pregnancy appetites.
Yes, plural, he thought. Once she relaxed, she’d begun making suggestive comments to him about the things they could do in the water if there weren’t so many people around.
They entered through the yard so they could use the outdoor shower. Mulder took a good look around at the privacy fence. It was a tall, solid vinyl fence with no gaps, and the homes that abutted the yard were all small one-story cottages. The shower itself was also partially enclosed. By the time he placed their things on the deck, Scully was already rinsing herself off, her bathing suit still on and her back to him. Mulder took off his shirt and swim trunks and took a moment to enjoy the view before he joined her, putting his arms around her and pressing his center into her backside.
Scully turned around to face him and gasped. He was already half-hard and growing fast. “Mulder! What if someone sees?”
“I already scoped it out,” he assured her, tugging at her swimsuit straps. “It’s completely fenced. If someone wants to see in here, they’re going to need to climb a tree. If they want to watch us that bad, let them have at it.” He took one finger and traced her neckline down to the side of one breast.
She looked around. He was right, and dammit, he was so fucking hot, leering at her like that, water dripping down his solid, muscular body. The cashier at the grocery store had asked him if he was a fitness trainer, and it hadn’t been the first time that had happened. She let him divest her of her swimsuit, and ran her arms up and down his body as he kissed her under the cool water, his hands resting gently on the sides of her growing belly. He slowly moved them up her body to her breasts, which had always been quite sensitive and were even more so thanks to her pregnancy. She stifled a cry as he kneaded and pinched both nipples, then moved down to lick and suck on them as he slinked one hand between her legs to pump her pussy with two fingers, brushing her clit with each in and out stroke.
It didn’t take long. She’d been hot for him since they’d made out in the water at the beach. She whimpered and thrust against him as he felt her convulse around his hand. He put both arms back around her and planted light, loving kisses all over her face as she came down and caught her breath.
“I want you inside me,” she finally said, turning off the water. “But not in here.”
Mulder nodded. She had gotten big enough that certain sex positions – like him lifting her off the ground and fucking her against the wall – weren’t possible anymore, and the ground was concrete. They pushed the excess water off themselves and entered the house through the back. Scully led Mulder into the bedroom, threw a couple of towels down on the bed, then got up on all fours and seductively wiggled her ass at him, looking over her shoulder seductively.
“Oh fuck yes,” he growled, his dick throbbing as he looked at her glistening, pink pussy just begging to be filled up. He joined her on the bed, grasped her hips and slowly entered her, enjoying the tight warm wetness as it enveloped him inch by inch. After they found their rhythm, him plunging in and out of her as she met him thrust for thrust, he reached around to play with her tits and tweak her nipples, making her squeal.
“God, Mulder, HARDER!” she thrust back against him with all she had, and he knew that meant she wanted to have the daylights fucked out of her.
He was more than willing to oblige, putting all of the core work he’d been doing in the gym to good use as he pounded her, their bodies making a lewd wet slapping sound on each inward thrust. He knew from the sounds she was making when she was close; she wasn’t afraid to be loud now that they were indoors. He gritted his teeth to maintain control until she finally arched her back and ground her backside against him, emitting a strangled cry that sounded somewhat like his name. He threw his head back and let out a primal yell as he felt himself empty inside her.
His legs felt like Jell-O. He collapsed to one side, pulling her with him and holding her as they gasped for air and felt the warm afterglow embrace them. He put one hand on her belly and propped himself up when he felt movement.
“Hey, she’s moving,” he said, a look of wonder on his face.
“Yeah, I can feel her. She’s been getting more active.” They’d gotten the ultrasound two weeks before, which confirmed what they already knew; they were having a little girl, and so far, everything was fine. Both she and their baby were perfectly healthy.
“I read that when you have an orgasm, the baby gets a massage.”
Scully rolled her eyes. “That website again.”
“One of them. I’m not sure if it was the vegetable and fruit one.”
She turned over to face him. “I want to take a shower and have some fudge. Then maybe a hot dog later.” She ran one finger up and down the length of his cock, which had softened but was still wet and sticky from their sex.
“So, I take it this means you’ve warmed up to this whole Babymoon thing?”
“Sure, if it means a full week of you feeding me and fucking me.”
“Jesus, woman.” Mulder decided to go have another protein shake while his insatiable wife showered.

Return of the ignorance: Don't Say Gay pt. 2.
Tumblr media
Hello Readers!
In one of my first blogs written on here, I discussed the second coming of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in the state of TN. This was back in 2013, and who would have thought that nine years later I would be writing about yet another state that is trying to Ban and erase the word “gay” from the schools.
I am not sure about all of my readers; However, I knew from a very young age that I was not “normal”. I may not have known exactly what was different, but I knew that I did not think, react, and see the world as a binary, black and white existence. I found myself able to admire not only the beauty in women but men as well. I knew I was different, I just did not know, how. I struggled with my sexuality as I grew up. I learned that I was not normal, I was a “freak” and I let that play in my head over and over again until I had hated myself much more than I realized was possible. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I accepted myself fully and embraced myself.
I grew up in Delaware a state that leans more on the liberal side of the spectrum. My struggle was internalized homophobia that sprouted from a combination of religious and unrealized familial homophobia. Kids are cruel, and we know that, but teachers were my saving grace. There were many times that I found myself leaning on the guidance of one of my teachers to bring me back from dark places. They accepted who I was even if they did not relate, they supported me and were an ally.
Since my time in school, there has been a lot of progression in the normalization of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, every couple of years we see the rise of discrimination, bigotry, and marginalization. Former leadership in this country has normalized hate and given voices to those that previously hated in silence.
I will not say that it was ever gone, ignorance will always exist; however, it was not vocal and front-facing. And as we see some things getting better, we have other states and individuals pushing a hate-filled agenda.
Over the past few months, we have seen a rise in attempts to censor and invalidate huge parts of history. The same people that are against “Cancel Culture” are the ones that are trying to erase formative lessons from our schools. From books and teachings on the holocaust to the realistic and historical implications of systemic racism, misogyny, and discrimination. If there is something that makes the cis-gendered heteronormative white man look bad, it is being removed from schools and white-washing and Christian-washing our educational system and government.
Therefore when we prohibit our educational system from teaching the history and facts that have built the nation, we are invalidating the fight and struggle of entire societies in favor of remaining ignorant to the hurt and pain that was caused.
At the root of these bills, we are seeing arguments that are based in religious belief and not in statistics or fact. Removing the word or mention of homosexuality, same-sex couples, and anything other than heterosexual-normative life is telling one child that his two moms are second-class, or another that their feelings of being a boy/girl/non-conforming is invalid and cause internalized self-hate and lack in confidence.
These bills cause the rate of LGBTQ+ youth suicides to increase. They harbor and allow bullying and hate to grow. They tell children that their life or the lives of their parents and loved ones are sub-par and of less value than their friends’ heteronormative family. It fosters a precedent to further isolate and alienate youth that is already at higher risk for suicide, substance abuse, and psychological trauma.
The scary part is the religious basis of these bills and laws that are being created. What is forgotten is that in addition to freedom of religion, there is also freedom FROM religion. The government, local, state, and federal should not be making laws based in religious belief or bias. Beliefs are not facts, and even when faced with facts, beliefs are still ruling the decisions of lawmakers in this country.
If you live in Florida please, write to your local representatives on the implications that these bills will set. The lessons that erasing an entire group of Americans will have on the youth. They are not only erasing members of communities but they are erasing the family members and loved ones of children. They are making it to where someone is unable to share information about their family members. Most importantly, these bills deteriorate the ability of children to learn critical thinking skills. It limits their ability to formulate their own opinions and ideas. It crushes creativity and ultimately sets children up to enter a growingly global environment in which they are unable to perform at the maximum of their potential.
Florida is not the only state where attacks on gay and trans youth are occurring. Protect our youth and stop putting them in further danger.
Remember: the similarities in all humans far exceed the differences; however, the differences are what is being focused on. We need to share love and break down the barriers that foster hate.
There is no better you than your authentic you!
Love, Light, and Happiness!
