'Amity' (Felix Catton x Reader)

A/N: Hiya, y'all. Welcome back after this what-seems-like-forever hiatus. Coming back with a fully-fluffy fluff, so if you are feeling mushy today, go for it.

Summary: Some fluffy encounter with Felix.

"Y/N, yeah?" asked a voice behind you.

You turned around, clearly startled to see no other than Felix Catton right in front of you. It was unforeseen, seeing as he had never engaged in nothing beyond a quick gaze exchange with you. You always wondered who would be the one to give in and finally initiate a conversation, should that ever happen in the first place.

"What's up?" you asked, innocently, bestowing him with a friendly grin on your part. Instinctively, he reciprocated the gesture.

"Uhm.. yeah. So I have seen you around the campus. Plenty of time, actually. We never really had a chance to talk... And I... you know..." He began toying with his fingers, momentarily losing your gaze.

Was he stressed? It seemed so... A bizarre sight it was, seeing a flustered man of two meters stumbling upon his words and blushing like a girl. Upon his downcast smile, your grin ever so widened at the cuteness of this scene.

But gosh, was he bewitching. These doe brown eyes and slightly too-long-hair played the tricks on your mind as he stood there, dwarfing over your figure with his lofty posture.

"You know, if you want to ask me out..." A taunting smirk pained on your lips. "I would be more than pleased to say 'yes.'"

He instantaneously, somehow with too much animation, looked at you from the ground. His eyes held a state of avidity and relief in them. After ogling you for a few seconds, frozen, he probably realized that he was gaping and so he smiled at you keenly with his gaze momentarily dropping to your lips. It was a hasty action, almost imperceptible if you weren't scrutinizing his face. But you noticed.

"Really?" he more sighed than asked. Even so, your eyes lit up and you nodded, trying to pull off the most composed version of yourself, yet failing miserably. "So that's cool."

You both laughed at that. You studied each other's expressions for longer than necessary, the two of you somehow locked in the moment and not able to draw away. Somewhere in the background, someone called out your name and it finally clicked that you should probably get going at this point.

"Listen, as much as I love talking to you... I have to go," you said with a pout which was actually genuine. You detested the fact that you couldn't stay out any longer, delve into the chat with Felix; but your teacher probably had already begun the lecture and it didn't deem ideal for you to lose another one of disquisitions after a day of a hangover break. Or a series of such breaks.

Felix pursed his lips, disappointment imparting on his features. With a mere nod of acknowledgment, he forced on a smile, making some nugatory movement with his arms as if suddenly not knowing what to do with them. "So see you after classes, yeah?"

"Mhm..." you hummed, casually smiling at him in response. Once he started to walk away, his long legs taking the strides that quickly carried him away from you, you determined to ask him one last question before departing: "Don't you want my phone number or something?"

He only twisted his head over his shoulder to get a better view of you. Then he beamed at you. "Already got it."

And he winked. A cocky, playful wink that made your insides flip.

A minute or two later, your phone screen lit up with the unknown number sending over a text: "So a picnic, next weekend?"

Hey! In your practical writing tips - post you said novels require lots of telling. I've noticed this too when I read, amazing books that tell a lot vs. showing but all advice gears to show and that's what I've been learning to do. Since I can't find anyone that teaches when to tell vs. show and how much tell vs. show is right and why telling is good etc. I was wondering if you could elaborate on this? Why some books that tell a lot are very engaging and others can't keep my attention? I'm so interested to see your thoughts! Thank you.

Like I said in that post, teaching people how to write isn't really my jam so this is less a teaching guide and more just my assorted thoughts on the subject based on my own opinions and the habits that I follow.

I guess what it boils down to is this. You can't really say that either showing or telling is more important in a novel, but the things that you show are perhaps more relevant.

For example, if you describe the morning routine of your character in great detail every single morning, readers are going to get bored. The story will grind to a halt. Yes you're showing us that, which most people would say is a good thing based on "show don't tell", but the information isn't relevant. If you're setting up a fantasy or sci-fi story it might be relevant once or even twice to show us how things work, but not every single time.

Similarly, if your character gets news telling them that someone they love has perished, you don't want to simply say that it made them sad. You want to show us their reaction. What do they do? What do they say? What physical sensations do they have? Are they lightheaded, do they feel out of breath, does their throat hurt because they're trying not to cry? That information is all relevant to the character, the scene, and the reader. If you simply say they're sad, then your story feels too shallow.

Many people might consider dialogue a kind of telling, but really it's both. What the characters say, how they say it, and also what they don't say can show us a lot about who they are as a person, which is relevant information to the audience even if they're simply explaining something that would be considered exposition. But what do your characters actually need to say or hear? And what can you relay to us through something happening in the background, for instance?

And what about the genre? I like to write road trip novels, which means I spend a lot of time showing the minutiae of the journey. That's relevant because the story is the journey that's being taken. But sometimes your characters just have to get from one place to another, and you don't need to get bogged down in it. You can just say that they took a bus or boat or horse or whatever.

Balancing it in any given story is the writing equivalent of "this meeting could have been email". What do you actually have to get together in a conference room to discuss (show the readers in detail) versus what can be summarized in a few sentences in an email? What will make you bored out of your mind if you see too much of it, versus what will leave you lost and confused without it?

And of course just because something is telling or summarized doesn't mean that the way that you write isn't important! Your writing should still be engaging even when you're telling. Pay attention to the words you use, the rhythm of your sentences, the variety of sentence lengths, things like that. If something is pleasant to read it will keep the reader's attention on the page. If the sentence rhythms or lengths are too similar, it becomes "monotone" and causes people's attention to wander.

Something I pay special attention to is that - unless the narrator is subjective or unreliable - I don't tell something about characters in the narration which is shown to be false. Nothing gets me riled up like supposedly objective narration which tells me a character is like so and I should feel like this about them, but then their dialogue and actions reveal that to be patently false and I feel some other way. Of course that is something that relies on the narrator being objective and having access to more information than we do. If it's a POV character who might just be unobservant, overly arrogant, biased, or kinda stupid, that's fine

When it comes to showing versus telling in regards to the background/description...well. I struggle a lot with description because I have almost complete aphantasia and can't visualize things easily. So I cheat! Anything that I describe in detail is something that my POV character is actually paying attention to. The level of detail varies from book to book based on what kind of person has the POV and what sorts of things they notice. And again, that's relevant to the audience because it's information which is relevant to the character. This is also really great way to start building up to any kind of romantic interest, because people do tend to pay a lot more attention to people they're interested in!

I feel like this has gotten really long, so if there's anything that you would like me to elaborate on more or I wasn't clear about, feel free to send another ask! I won't say I'm objectively right (usually lol) but I'm always happy to talk shop.

Hopefully some of it can be helpful to you or at least give you some things to start thinking about. And of course, it's always a good way to start by studying books that you read and seeing what you like and what you don't like and how it's been handled in both.

just got out of a late showing of Talk To Me and I have thoughts!

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

so let's dive in while it's still fresh in my mind

Grief is a heavy player in this movie and that's what makes it so good. So much of what happens is because of Mia not being able to let go or face her grief. she's vulnerable to the spirits/demons/souls because she's lonely and sad and she's trying to find anything to make her feel.

The opening scene was absolutely amazing! it sets up how fucking crazy the movie is going to be. It brings us into the world where everything is for views, everyone is entertainment even when they're suffering. It's not the focus of the film but they way social media guides the story is interesting.

to add to the previous point, every time someone does the "game"/seance, the others whip out their phones with lightening speed. They laugh, they point their cameras at the possessed and scream and shout in joy regardless of what the possessed is doing. we see this in Daniel's first go which is a weird sexual possession that leaves him embarrassed and scared, whereas the group is laughing and recording. it's also what brings Mia to the hand in the first place, she keeps seeing the videos posted of people playing the game and having "fun"

I really liked the kangaroo scene because it was so jarring and the foreshadowing was just mwah. wonderful.

I will admit Mia got annoying because you want her to know that she should stop, but she won't. I was literally trying not to yell at the screen lol

on the other hand (ha hand), I get it. She was desperate, grief will do that to you, she just wanted answers and closure. And that can drive you mad.

The gore/violence in the movie was so good for a possession film! The Riley scene was intense and had the small amount of us in the theater squirming and yelling and gasping. And the limbo/purgatory scene although brief was not what I was expecting and it blew me away, it gave cronenbergian/yuzna's Society [1989] vibes.

the cast was very very good! Sophie Wilde played Mia with such an intensity and passion that drew me in even when I didn't care for her character's actions. And the supporting cast stood their own which was awesome because sometimes in horror those other characters can sometimes get pushed aside or fade into the background.

the sound design had me so tense! I swear I thought I was hearing things and not sure if it was me or the movie. We don't talk enough about sound when it comes to horror. It's honestly what really scares me, more than the actual scenes, it's the score that revs up my anxiety and fear.

All in all, the movie was really good! I'm not even a huge fan of possession horror but I was excited to see it and really glad that I did. I know it's been greenlit for a sequel which would be interesting depending on where they take the story but I'm definitely more interested in the prequel that they've already made!! I hope it gets picked up by A24 like the sequel is because I definitely would like to know more about the hand and mythology behind the "game".

Just to add on some more personal thoughts: It's interesting to me how often grief plays a role in horror. From Midsommar to Hereditary to The Babadook to classics like Pet Sematary, the list goes on. We are vulnerable when we're grieving, easier to let bad things in or ignore the people who love us who are trying to help. When I watch horror about grief, it gets to me more often than any others because I've known grief like a childhood friend. It's been with me my entire life. But I've learned to handle it better than I used to, and with movies like this it's a safe place for me to let it consume me, let it be messy and overwhelming like it is for the characters in the movie.

Anyways to wrap this up please go see Talk To Me! If you like possession movies you'll like it, if you like movies with deeper layers you'll like it, it feels like there's a little bit of everything to appeal to most horror fans.

This is why representation matters

This past weekend, I watched the first two episodes of Ms Marvel with my parents in Pakistan and seeing our culture accurately represented on the screen, especially in something as big as the fucking MCU, was such a huge deal for all of us. Throughout the episodes, we were screaming out at the desi references (Ko Ko Karina made me soo fucking happy) and when all the moments where we felt like our own family, our own struggles and the way we deal with things in our households, it was a moment of reassurance in our hearts that we are seen; we do exist outside of just being terrorists and token ‘Muslim” characters to fill a quota.

Some thing that really made me realize this was when my father, on multiple occasions, exclaimed ‘We have made it to Marvel’ with such joy and amazement because he was able to see things about his culture and his life on the screen portrayed in a way that made him proud and not villainized because of his country. Because let’s be honest, most of the times Pakistan and Pakistanis are not portrayed in the best of lights in western media.

This also applies to the Partition scene where the British are actually called out for their actions and they are portrayed as the ones in the wrong instead of the people of the subcontinent, which was a very refreshing take. 

Before this, whenever I used to see people claiming how much the positive representation they got in media affected and mattered to them I never really understood it because it had never happened for me. Until now. 

Ms Marvel is a wonderous show which portrays the true nature and beauty of the Pakistani culture and I have never been happier to be able to claim that a character is from the same place and background as me. It has already broken so many stereotypes and means so much to the people that it portrays and I can not wait to see where it goes next.

This is a thing I made months ago when I was kinda bored and I wanted to pass time, but I got too lazy to post it and, once again, started to rot in my drafts.

Please, don't take it too seriously. This is all about me being silly and fangirling over my favorite take on Adam/The Creature in a Frankenstein adaptation (Musical!Adam comes as a very close second) 🧟😍

And then everything goes down when he's expelled from a village by an angry mob for stealing food (but he doesn't even understand what he's doing wrong! He's just born, has no idea what the fuck is happening, where he is and he's desperately hungry and... and...)

He runs away until he finds the DeLacey's house and hides inside a little barn where lies down and starts to cry and I just cry as well and all I want is to hug him and make sure no one will ever hurt him again 🥺

The scene where he meets the little girl for the first time

Little girl (I think her name's Eva if I'm not mistaken): Do you like baby ducklings?

Adam, all happy and shy: Y-yes...

When Eva brings Adam inside the house and you clearly see in his face how anxious and nervous he is because he's scared of how the girl's grampa will react to his presence

But then he relaxes when the old DeLacey receives him with open arms (the man also told him he was blind, which means he wouldn't be scared by his appearence) and even offers him shelter and food

And then DeLacey starts to play his violin and Adam gets so emotional he starts to cry because that was the first time someone ever treated him not with hostility and violence but with pure kindness

Eva: What's wrong? Why are you crying?

Adam, sobbing: No one... has ever been... so kind to me before.

WHY DID ANYONE HUG THIS POOR MAN YET?! 😢

In the next scene he and the little girl are dancing together while DeLacey plays his violin and he's smiling and having fun and this is the happiest moment of his life (and sadly his only one 😔)

Literally all the times the Creature calls Victor "father" with that shaking, begging and desperate voice tone of his

Adam witnessing Justine's execution and being unable to look at the scene ('cause he knows he fucked up and he can't take back the damage he's done)

Then, at night, he carries her dead body in his arms and begs her for forgiveness

I mean, of course this doesn't change or excuse his crimes, but it shows he feels remorse for the suffering he caused and how the weight of his actions actually affects him. It's just so painfully human and, even though it doesn't happen in the book, I love they included this scene. 👌

His reaction when he sees the bride for the first time is just so touching. His teary eyes full of hope, his shaking voice, his smile of pure joy. I just... 🥹

"She's so beautiful. She's perfect."

"There's so much I want to tell you, share with you, teach you. About life. Love. I made us a home, our own secret place, where we can live without fear... with our children... together."

P.S.: You can listen to a little bit of "Moolight Sonata" playing in the background during this scene. It just makes the whole moment even more melancholic and heartbreaking. It could be considered the Creature's love theme (I read a post suggesting this idea and it just got stuck in my head because it's so perfect and it makes me so emotional and I'm just crying again okay).

The whole scene between the Creature and Robert Walton, but specially this part:

Adam: Do you dream, Captain?

R. Walton: Yes, of course.

Adam: I dreamed once. To love. To be loved.

R. Walton: But you're a slave to vengeance.

Adam: Is not any man subject to temptation every day?!

R. Walton: Christ did not resort to vengeance when all mankind sinned against Him!

Adam: His father loved Him, sir. My father despised me.

That's how the conversation happened in the book? Not exactly, and part of me still wished they had used more of the original dialogue because is so fucking good.

Did the scene still hit hard in the feels? Oh God YES! And how it did.

Well... that's it.

There are definitely more precious moments but I think this is already enough.

Also, if no one in this fandom will spread love for this miniseries, I'll have to do it myself. 🥰

Hoshi was moving the camera around, showing the viewers a few parts of the makeup trailer while describing what could be seen. His ears perked up when there was suddenly a familiar high-pitched laugh in the background, getting closer to the room he was in. He directed the camera to the entrance, showing the first person that joined him, his fellow '96 Liner,

"Wonwoo's here," he commented, followed by a quick, "Oh, and Minnie too, I thought I heard your voice."

The girl glanced at the performance team leader with wide eyes, looking like a dear caught in headlights before she quickly covered it with a big grin.

She made her way to the empty spot next to Hoshi, sitting down on the rather uncomfortable couch.

"I'll be filming Wonwoo as he changes into his outfit today," he continued entertaining the viewers, getting interrupted by a chuckle from the female member. "What?" He wondered.

"I don't know how appropriate that is for the Seventeen youtube channel,"

[very appropriate, don't worry minnie]

[very appropriate, i promise you]

The camera was on her, filming her side profile while she kept her eyes straight ahead.

[i love how it's apparently not appropriate for us, but she can't take her eyes off him]

"But the viewer ratings would go up for sure," she added,

making the tiger laugh out loud, whereas the other '96 Liner turned his head to her, smiling in amusement,

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Oh, tell me I'm wrong. Carats have been waiting for this day,"

Minnie teased him, a shy grin playing on her lips, 

[BROOOOOO]

[so she's that type of girlfriend]

"Right?" She sent a quick look into the lens before directing her attention to Hoshi, who nodded in agreement.

The three continued staying in the trailer, talking for a few more minutes when Wonwoo took a bag of chips off the table and threw himself onto the seating era, munching on the snack. He offered the bag to the girl, who declined, but Hoshi gladly took it out of the '96 Liner's grasp as he was called to change his outfit.

The camera was filming close shots of the leader's face when a hand suddenly covered his eyes.

"Why are you covering my eyes?" He chuckled at the girl's sudden action.

"Wonwoo's changing," she answered in the most normal possible tone, making Hoshi only chuckle again.

[gatekeeping her boyfriend, #girlboss]

"Then I should be the one covering your eyes idiot," he reached forward with his hand but only managed to brush over her nose and lips as she squirmed away with a giggle.

Dokyeom, Seungkwan, and Mingyu were dancing in the middle of the practice room, the camera filming every second of what was happening, when, in the back, Minnie had come through the door and Wonwoo with his hands on her shoulders, right behind her.

The girl stopped in her tracks, making the rapper come to a halt as well as they both eyed the scene in front of them. Minnie scrunched her eyebrows in confusion. She sighed, shook her head with a smile, and stepped inside, turning around right away to interlock her arm with Wonwoo's as they continued making their way further into the room.

[eye emoji]

On the set of his music video for 'Spider', Hoshi kept his gaze on the monitor, rewatching what they had just shot when two people, in thick jackets and masks, started approaching him from behind. With slow and quiet steps they got closer until they stopped right behind him, only to reach out, place their hands on his torso and basically scare the crap out of that man. He jumped up and immediately turned around, the camera showing the two intruders - Wonwoo and Minnie.

[they're literally everywhere together]

"Woah," Hoshi exclaimed with a big smile, his hand still over his heart, "You scared me, for real." The three laughed together, and the '96 Liner went in to hug the couple, "I didn't know you guys were coming."

"I forced Wonwoo to come with me," Minnie explained, getting a chuckle from the two men.

[OF COURSE, SHE DID]

[dominant minnie, we love it]

The rapper was quick to defend himself, "I wanted to come along. On free will."

[hm, sure wonwoo]

[he doesn't want to admit that minnie's the dom in the relationship]

[it's okay]

As Hoshi had to go back to filming, the cameraman asked the couple to say a few words. 

"I'm really excited for my leader's solo song. I wanted to come and see what he planned since he had put a lot of hard work into this. He's even getting half naked for Carats," Minnie chuckled, turning to the side to get another glimpse of the scene they were about to shoot.

Wonwoo scrunched his eyebrows, "Your leader?" To which Minnie nodded, and he smiled, "S.Coups is not gonna like that." But she just shrugged with a laugh,

"I'm loyal to Hoshi. Once S.Coups does something like this, I'll be loyal to him."

Before she could say another thing, a hand suddenly covered her eyes, making her giggle,

"What?" Her hands came up to push Wonwoo's down, but it didn't even budge.

"Hoshi's half-naked right now," the '96 Liner answered her, smiling along to the sound of her laughter.

[LIKE GIRLFRIEND, LIKE BOYFRIEND]

The next clip showed the short moment when Minnie and Wonwoo visited Minghao on the set of his 'Side by Side' music video. Standing next to each other, the girl, once again, had her arm interlocked with his as they waved to the other '97 Liner who was sitting on the couch that was part of the scene he was filming.

"We're here!" They shouted together, their eyes showing how bright their smiles underneath the masks were.

THE ENTIRE FREAKING EGO EPISODE

As Wonwoo walked towards the door to their right, ready to open it with the key the couple had just acquired, Minnie was hot on his step, her gaze switching behind her every now and then.

[she literally almost never left his side during this entire episode]

"Shouldn't we open the other door as well?" She wondered, her voice quiet, not wanting to trigger any more jump scares even though she knew they would come sooner or later.

The rapper's head snapped towards her, "Hm?" He hummed, "That door?" And nodded towards the mentioned door on the other side of the room. The girl motioned 'yes' with her head before Wonwoo managed to open the lock and get rid of the chain around the door handle. Minnie squirmed at the sight of the creepy-looking room ahead of them as her hands immediately found their way to wrap around his bicep.

[HER HANDS]

[i want to touch his arm like that too pleeeaaasee]

"I think we should really maybe look into the other room first," she repeated her words, tugging on his arm gently, making the man chuckle.

[we saw that wonwoo]

"You just want to drag out going further," to which she nodded with a straight facial expression. 

[STOP]

[THEY'RE SO CUTE]

Wonwoo agreed and took both of them to the other side of the room, opening the entrance to take a step inside. The girl behind him quickly shook her head,

"Nevermind," and backed off, "You've got to be kidding me. Why would they do something like this?"

The '96 Liner chuckled, "You like horror movies, don't you?"

"Yeah, but this is a little too real. Horror movies aren't real," she defended herself, taking a few steps back and waited for him to join her again.

"Some horror movies are real," he commented, earning him a gentle nudge out of annoyance,

"Why did you have to say that now?"

He passed her, walking towards the opened door, wanting to continue their journey further into the building. Minnie's eyes were fixed on the dark room to her left, and, for some reason, her feet dragged her closer towards it. She dared to take another closer look inside, a chill shooting through her body as she analysed the weirdly placed body and the strings attached to it. Turning her head, she was about to open her mouth but noticed how much further away Wonwoo already was and was quick to jog towards him before he could disappear out of her sight.

"Hey, wait up for me," she whined out loud, getting him to stop in his tracks and wait for her to catch up with him.

[dude stopped, IMMEDIATELY]

"Should we go downstairs?" Wonwoo asked, even though it was more of a rhetorical question as they knew they didn't have much of a choice.

Minnie found the gaze of her boyfriend, immediately shaking her head as their eyes locked.

"You can stay behind me," he offered her,

taking the first step down that would lead them into the dark. Without waiting for an answer, he continued going down the set of stairs, feeling her presence close behind him the entire time and the gentle brush of her fingertips against his hand, knowing she wanted nothing more but to hold onto it tightly, so he engulfed hers in his.

The couple was exploring the floor and had reached the dark room with a couch in the middle of it and lockers lined up against the wall.

"This is the one without a padlock," Minnie pointed at it as hesitant steps took her inside, "That's the one we're not supposed to open..." she made sure to keep a good distance between her and the cupboard. Her eyes didn't leave Wonwoo's form as he got closer to the lockers. "And we have to find out how to open the other one."

The rapper grabbed the lock to inspect it before dropping it and moving to the right locker, knocking on it for some reason, making the girl jump and rush over to him, pushing his arm down,

"Why the hell would you do this?!" She quietly shouted at him, scared of the consequences his actions might have.

[i would've punched him so hard, ngl]

Wonwoo shrugged, "It said not to open it. That doesn't mean we can't knock on it."

Minnie's facial expression read nothing but confusion, "What kind of logic is that?"

He continued nudging into the locky harshly, the sound of metal echoing through the room, making the '97 Liner shiver as she continued to slap his arm away, "Wonwoo!"

[i can't tell if he really was curious or just wanted to tease her but I'm putting money on the latter]

"I think someone's inside," his comment didn't do anything to soothe her, "But they're probably not gonna jump out."

Something inside her told her to try and glance through the little slits at the top of the locker, and for some reason, she decided to listen to that voice and stood up on her tippy toes, trying to sneakily look inside. As expected, she couldn't see anything - which she definitely was glad for.

"Not unless we open it, but don't provoke it. Who knows. So stop." She warned him one more time, and with a sigh, she took a few steps back, just in case, continuing to eye the locker suspiciously.

The two had gone back into the room that held different files and documents about certain 'patients'. They were looking through each one of them, with Wonwoo reading some out loud.

Minnie chuckled to herself, but it caught the rapper's attention, making him hum and raise his eyebrows. She shook her head, "I don't understand any of this" 

[i didn't even understand anything with the subtitles, babes, so don't worry]

Her comment made him smile as well. 

[he isn't even hiding his amusement, it's so cute, i can't]

Minnie did understand it a little bit, but some of the vocabulary that was used in the files was medical stuff she never had anything to do with. They shared a moment of silence before the oldest took the word,

"You can go and look for more clues if you want to," he suggested, immediately noticing the perplexed expression the girl sent him.

"Are you being funny now? You want me to go around here on my own?" 

[straight up, kick him for that idea bc wtf wonwoo]

She pointed behind her, taking a quick glance as well, coming to sight with the dark once again and the weird lighting that lit up the room slightly.

Wonwoo shrugged, "Maybe you'll find something else."

With a sigh, she found herself defeated and decided to step over her shadow, reminding herself that she usually was someone that enjoyed adrenaline and watching horror movies. This was unlike her, but for some reason, the situation was more uncomfortable for her than she had imagined it would be. She passed the mannequin in the chair and was back in the hallway they had reached after walking down the stairs. She also didn't even look into the room with the locker, 

"Nope, not going in there," 

[SAME GIRL]

she whispered to herself, taking a few steps further before she was about to round the corner when she came to sight with total darkness ahead of her. "Not going there either," 

[i'm so sorry, but i literally laughed so hard]

she shook her head, jumping back. 

Once she wanted to get back to Wonwoo, the glass door seemed to be another thing she was interested in as it possibly could hold a clue to their further steps. She didn't get too close, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw something in the mirror, making her jolt as she dared to take a peak. Minnie jumped and whimpered out loud as it was clear to see what she could see through the mirror.

"Oppa...," she raised her voice slightly, 

[LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS]

hoping the man in the other room could hear her. She backed off quickly before her steps turned into a jog, running back to where the '96 Liner was still going through the documents. "Wonwoo!"

"What?" He reacted quickly, raising his head to watch the girl heading toward him. "What is it?" He asked again, surprised by the rush she seemed to be in.

She ushered for him to come closer, "Come, come." Leaning forward to get a hold of his hand to make him follow her back to the glass door, they at first thought might be an exit.

[he gets dragged like that by mingyu AND by minnie]

"What did you find?" Wonwoo wondered, but the girl didn't answer him until they came to a halt.

She pointed straight ahead, slightly out of breath, "Look at the mirror."

Minnie received a perplexed look in return, "What?"

She shook her head, "Just look." Without asking another question, Wonwoo got closer to the mirror, looking at him first before directing his gaze around, trying to see what his girlfriend was talking about.

"Is there something I'm supposed to see?" He asked her.

"Yes!" She walked up to stand next to him, glancing at the mirror in the same angel as before, only to be disappointed by what she saw - nothing. "Huh?" In confusion, she walked past Wonwoo to get closer to the door, leaning in slightly, trying to tilt her head to be able to see to the side. "What the heck..." Minnie mumbled.

"What?" The rapper joined her, staring out into the darkness, wondering what she had seen before.

"I swear to God...," she turned back around towards him, "There was something- someone."

"Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Wonwoo! Happy Birthday to you!" At the sound of Minnie's singing echoing through the room, Wonwoo looked up, finding her standing by the door, a small cupcake in her hands.

Before he could say anything, Dokyeom's head appeared in the doorway,

"Happy Birthday, hyung!" He quickly shouted, disappearing again, leaving the couple and a few of their staff members alone in the room.

Wonwoo chuckled, thanking DK before smiling at the female member, "What are you doing here?" His eyes didn't leave her form as she put the cupcake down on the table in front of him, still staying behind the camera though. "I already blew out candles," he commented at the burning candle on the dessert.

[he didn't stop smiling the entire time]

Minnie shrugged with a grin, "Doesn't mean you can't do it again."

He grinned, "Everyone," directing his gaze towards the camera, "Minnie's now here too," and read some comments at the same time, "They want to see you." He looked up at the girl, who was quick to make her way around the table and sit down next to him on the couch after he had scooted over.

"Hi, guys," she greeted the fans watching the Vlive with a bright smile.

She pointed at the candle, making Wonwoo hum in question. "You have to blow it out." 

Minnie picked it up with two hands and held it up higher, giving Carats a view of the dessert. "I made it," she smiled proudly, making Wonwoo laugh out loud,

"You bought this."

"How would you know?" The girl raised her eyebrows at him in a teasing manner. He copied her facial expression,

making both of them chuckle as they shared a short second of silence, just looking into each other's eyes.

"Because you said you had to leave for a second, and suddenly you're back with this."

"I had to leave because of a call," she joked, trying to talk herself out of it quickly, but Wonwoo only laughed at her.

"Sure."

Before he was able to say anything more, Minnie spoke up impatiently, "Just make a wish and blow the candle out."

"Can you sing happy birthday in french for me?" He grinned cheekily at her facial expression.

"In french? Why?"

"I like it," he shrugged, but the girl shook her head with a nervous chuckle,

"Later. Maybe.“

"You're gonna get your present later," Minnie told him after he had given her a bite of his birthday cake.

Wonwoo looked at her in confusion at first, "But you already gave me a present," which turned into an amused smile when she glanced at him perplexed. Within a short moment, the light in her brain switched on, and she stared at him wide-eyed, sending him a message with her eyes, shouting 'shut the fuck up' in her head. 

[WHAT'S THAT LOOK?!]

She tried to cover it up quickly,

"No...," hiding her mouth behind her hand for a second, "I meant a different present." But her cheeks ratted her out.

[EHM... WHAT. IS. GOING. ON.]

The '96 Liner laughed, "Alright," changing the subject back to the cake, but not before she punched him softly in the shoulder.

bittersweet behind

Wonwoo, Mingyu, Minnie, and S.Coups were standing in a corner on the set of the Bittersweet music video, munching on some snacks their leader had brought.

"He's the leader of our hip-hop team," the '96 Liner told the camera.

"And we're the members," the younger rapper added.

"And Minnie is our new member," Wonwoo ended their explanation, 

[the way he includes her is so cute]

making the girl, who was snuggled into the leader's side, chuckle.

"I'm the hip-hop team's official fourth member," she smiled, making her boyfriend copy her expression.

Minnie was giving a brief explanation of some of the scenes they had shot on their first day when she felt two hands on her shoulders. In the next moment, Minghao, who had come to visit, was standing next to her, with his arm around her shoulder as he eyed her down.

"Wasn't Wonwoo wearing that jacket before?" He wondered.

[HA, CALLED OUT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA]

The female member nodded, getting a hold of the collar to pull it tighter around her frame, "But I was cold, so he gave it to me."

[brb, just gonna go take a quick bath with my toaster]

Her fellow '97 Liner smiled, "Gentleman," nodding along with her as she chuckled, "very good."

They were about to shoot the next scene, therefor Wonwoo was already sitting by the bar, waiting for the filming to start. Minnie hadn't shown up yet, but, speaking of the devil, she had just come in and taken her place behind the bar.

"Oooh, pretty girl," Wonwoo whistled, 

[WONWOO?!]

[i literally hardly ever see him that expressive wtf]

making the female turn around and stare at him in shock, hoping the makeup was covering the blush that she felt coming to her cheeks. 

[babes, you're cheeks are brighter than rudolph's nose]

She quickly looked around and found a piece of cloth to throw at him

Minnie laughed, "You just sounded like one of those guys in movies and tries to woo the bartender in a really gross way."

"Did you just call me gross?" The rapper chuckled, putting the cloth to the side.

[PLEASE HADBAJHDUIAFILFIFHU]

"I called what you said gross," she defended herself, 

[you enjoyed it, don't even try to deny it]

sending him a bright grin before they had to start filming and acting seriously.

Hoshi had come to visit the trio on set, and the camera found all four of them outside, lost in a conversation.

"Watching them shoot in person," the performance team leader explained, "gets me really excited. I kept watching through the monitor and wow..." He stopped for a second, letting his last words linger in the air as the trio continued to look at him in anticipation. "Now with the last scene I watched, I noticed how good Minnie and Wonwoo look together on camera," he suddenly mentioned, making the trio chuckle.

Minnie, who was standing next to Wonwoo, her arms wrapped around his right arm, leaned into his shoulder, trying to hide her smile.

"Thank you, Hoshi," she smiled at him.

For their special performance video for Bittersweet, Mingyu, Wonwoo, and Minnie were dressed up in nicer clothing, with the guys in dress pants and button-ups and the girl in a skirt and pretty top. To accentuate her legs, the stylist gave her some knee-high boots that made it harder for her to walk. Her waddles made Minnie giggle as she made her way towards the other two members that had already taken place in front of the bar set. 

[she looks so cute, but i feel so sorry for her having to walk in these]

Once she came to view, Mingyu started laughing as well and tapped Wonwoo's legs before motioning for him to turn around and look at the female dancer.

"Are you okay?" Wonwoo wondered, getting up to offer his arm to help her walk.

Minnie nodded, "Yeah," and chuckled to herself, "The shoes are just really hard to walk in."

"Why are you wearing them then?" Her fellow '97 Liner wanted to know, moving to the side slightly as the director asked for the girl to be in the middle of both men.

The female grinned, "Because they look good." 

[HAHAHAHA SAME]

Her comment made Wonwoo shake his head.

While Mingyu got called out to get his makeup touched up, the older rapper and Minnie got instructions for the shooting of the video,

"And I was thinking that we could put Minnie up here," pointing to the bar, "So you'd sit on the counter."

"With that skirt?" Wonwoo immediately asked, making the girl smile,

[OH OH OH]

[wonwoo going into his protective boyfriend mode]

"You can't see anything," she assured him and agreed to get up on the counter. A staff member offered to get them a stool, but the '96 Liner stopped him. In the next moment, he had his hands on Minnie's hips, and she had hers on his shoulders, as they nodded to each other before she bent her knees slightly, ready to jump, and he raised her up to put her down onto the counter. 

[*clearing my throat* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH*

[WHAT THE ACTUAL FUUUUUCKK]

The rapper continued to stand in front of her while she tried to pull her skirt down as good as possible and crossed her legs to sit more elegantly.

Once she was done, Wonwoo stepped aside and took a seat on the stool to her left.

Minnie saw Mingyu and Wonwoo in front of the cameraman for their Inside Seventeen episode and decided to sneak up on them, stopping a few centimetres behind them.

"Mingyu promised to buy us something delicious," the '96 Liner explained to the camera, getting a glimpse of the female member out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head and motioned for her to come closer, taking a small step to the side, so she would fit in between them.

"What do you want to eat?" Mingyu asked him, realising Minnie was next to him after the words had left his lips.

Wonwoo directed his attention to the girl, brushing a hand over her head, "What do you want?"

[help, i just threw myself down the stairs]

She looked up at him, "I get to decide?" Making him nod, and the younger rapper agreed,

"Anything you want."

[not wonnie, BUT MY GOD MINGYU]

She sent a proud grin to the camera.

"Today, we're wearing our outfits from the music video," Minnie explained to the camera while the staff and members were getting ready for the pre-recording behind her. "I really like this comeback and the style of-" her talk was interrupted when suddenly a blanket was thrown over her upper body. Turning to the side, Wonwoo was standing next to her with a grin on his lips.

"What was that for?" She grabbed the piece of fabric and was about to remove it, but his hands were quick and pulled it up higher again, tightening it around her chest,

"You must be cold." His comment was directed towards the rather small vest she was wearing.

Minnie didn't get the hint right away, so she just shook her head and tried to get rid of the blanket one more time,

"No, not really. I'm good." But again, his hands came up to hold it tightly in place, this time, not letting go as he held onto it,

"I'm sure you're really cold. It's okay, I'll hold it for you." They shared a second in silence, with their eyes interlocked, and finally, Minnie got it, making her laugh out loud as she tried to get his hands off the fabric. With no luck though since the rapper was by far stronger than her, so she just gave in with a sigh. With a nod, she turned to the camera again,

"I hope you enjoy it, Carats."

The cameraman suddenly filmed a new figure coming to the Hip Hop unit's photo shoot for Esquire. It was quickly revealed to be Minnie as she took off her mask and greeted the camera,

"Hello," she smiled, "How are you?"

Before she could say anything more, Vernon's voice was heard from behind the camera, "What are you doing here?"

"I came to support you. Only you," she grinned and waddled her way forward, closer to him to engulf him in a hug. The '98 Liner stared at the camera perplexed as he made his body completely stiff, not giving into the show of affection.

"Wonwoo!" 

[younger brother quickly getting the boyfriend]

He suddenly called out, making the girl raised her head at the mention of her partner's name. She peaked past the younger member and found the rapper coming closer to the duo, his eyebrows scrunched in confusion,

"What are you doing here?" The repetition of Vernon's question made the two younger members chuckle.

[why are vernon and wonwoo sometimes the same person?]

"Can I not just show up to support you guys?" Minnie whined, glancing at both men, who kept a straight face.

[FR, SUPPORTIVE GIRLFRIEND]

Wonwoo kept on nagging her, "Support us during a photo shoot?" To which she nodded her head proudly.

"You might need it, who knows."

The '96 Liner chuckled and took a step closer, so they'd be in a smaller frame together, "What are you really doing here?" Lost in their conversation, they didn't realise that Vernon had left them alone.

Minnie sighed, "I left my keys at home," stretching her hand out, palm up. Wonwoo looked down, looked back up at her, only to look down again and slap his hand on hers, giving her a low-five.

[BRO, WONWOO]

"Too bad," he shrugged, making the girl look at him with an open mouth,

[he's so funny when he doesn't even try to be]

"What do you mean 'too bad'? I'm asking you very kindly to give me your keys," his hand came up to tap her chin at her cute antics, but she squirmed away with a smile the second he touched her,

[STOP, WHAT WAS THAT]

[DID YOU GUYS SEE THIS?!]

[PLEASE, HE'S SO IN LOVE]

"So I can go home."

A voice coming through the speakers, telling the members of the hip hop unit to get back in front of the camera, interrupted the couple.

Wonwoo grinned, "Oh, I have to go back," and turned his back to Minnie, but not before getting a hold of her hand and shaking it to comfort her. The female dancer kept her gaze on his silhouette as he walked away from her.

[minnie, hello?]

[her eyes are GLUED on him, jeez]

She took a deep breath, "You know," she started, slowly turning towards the camera, "Carats always ask what it's like to live with the members. This is what it's like. It's great." And sent the viewers a bright, sarcastic grin.

The members were taking a break from filming their music video to 'Rock With You' with everyone sitting at different places on the set. Minnie was between Dino and Wonwoo, her head on Wonwoo's shoulder as she joined him in watching what he was doing on his phone.

Next to the couple, Joshua was taking pictures of the maknae, just like he asked him to. As he went through the pictures, commenting on some of them, the '95 Liner asked him,

"You can feel my effort, right? And my love." To which the rapper's ear perked up,

"No one loves Dino as much as I do." To which the youngest laughed.

The girl raised her head from its position and opened her mouth,

"I love him more." Making Dino laugh even more.

[and the married couple's fight begins]

"No, I do," Wonwoo argued back. Minnie distanced herself from him, scooting closer to the maknae to rest her head on his shoulder,

"Nope, I love him the most," slinging her arms around his torso to give him a tight hug.

[SHE REALLY LOVES DINO SO MUCH]

The female member was sitting on the floor after their long practice for their Golden Disc Award performance. The camera was filming her for their Inside Seventeen episode, making her look up once she noticed, sending a cute wave and blowing a kiss towards it.

She jolted when someone suddenly grabbed her head and started shaking it, making her chuckle - she knew immediately who it was. 

[NO]

[NO, SHUT UP]

[THERE ARE SO MANY MOMENTS, BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE FIRST PLACE]

[HE'S SO AFFECTIONATE]

Her suspicion was confirmed once Wonwoo sat down next to her, placing the energy drink he was drinking on the floor.

The cameraman was still in the same place, and Minnie smiled, pointing at it, "The camera is jealous now." The rapper knew he was talking to her. "Because you did that to me but not to it."

[thank you minnie bc i genuinely was jealous]

The corners of his lips curled as he reached forward, pretending to get a hold of the lens and started shaking it the same way he would always do.

The members were standing on the side of the practice room, watching Vernon's dance break and rewarded him with a round of applause as soon as he was done. They got up from the floor and were making their way back into the middle. Wonwoo stopped in front of the cameraman, reaching out with his hands to grab the lens, shaking it in his usual style. Since Minnie was right behind him, she stopped with a smile, which was revealed once he freed the camera from his hold again and stepped aside. 

[sigh...]

[it's either him looking at her with heart eyes or she's doing it]

[can't they please just look at each other?!]

He caught the girl's glance from the corner of his eye and turned towards her, leaving the couple to smile at each other. 

[THANK YOU]

Just a second later, Wonwoo had his hands on Minnie's head, doing the same thing he just did to the camera, making her laugh out loud. 

[anybody wanna go jump into the river... from the bridge... with my car...]

Her hands came up to grasp his, trying to push them away while her giggles filled their ears.

Buddy Daddies PV2 and PV3 theories (PART 2)

Next up I'll speculate waaay more given that there's not a lot of images to makes coherent connections from. I'll start by the first new image we see of PV 3:

Apparently in this scene Miri is talking to Rei (I really need subtitles to tie this up better). And I have a theory for this: secret birthday party.

Now, I know it sounds a little far fetched, but I swear it makes sense. Hear me out, on the second PV we saw this scene of Miri with a birthday hat and decorations in the background:

And you're probably wondering, but who's birthday party? Well, it could be either Rei's of Kazuki's (not Miri since her birthday is in November and I don't think we would go through such a big time jump).

We don't know when Rei's birthday is, but we do know when Kazuki's is and the dates actually make some sense considering that it's been a few months and, if the episode where is raining comes first, it makes even more sense chronologically speaking. Kazuki's birthday, as seen in episode 4 (if it's his real birthday since they faked documents) is in May 16.

Now, this scene of Miri pouting is connected to this other scene of Kazuki looking worried:

And worried for who? Excellent question, I'll give you the answer: Rei. In this part of the PV Miri says "Rei papa seems very lonely" and we proceed to see this scene of Rei:

He is in someone else's car because the seats look different to his and Kazuki's car.

In that scene of Rei in the unknown car someone asks him "why do you kill?" to which he answers "it's my job".

So my theory is that either that's a flashback of the mission before he betrayed his previous organization (probably his father), because remember this dialogue from episode 5:

In the second and third PV we see brief action scenes of Rei fighting this guy:

And who is this guy? I'm pretty sure it's Rei's brother, just look at the marks underneath his eyes and the hairstyle, also in the third PV he mentions the word "father". So either he was send to kill Rei or this is a flashback of the betrayal (which I highly doubt to be honest).

I'm leaning more to this scene of Rei against his maybe brother being in the same episode of the party. I think that Rei is going to leave mid party, making Kazuki worried and Miri disappointed and saying that he seems lonely.

What confuses me the most is this next scene:

Kazuki is under the rain, dirty and looking super gloomy. The confusing part is that he's wearing the same shirt as in the party with Miri. So either he gets involved in the whole Rei vs family situation, or my theory is completely wrong and it's two different episodes lmao.

Honestly me being wrong is very likely. There still seven episodes to go and this brief scenes probably don't even scratch the surface of what will happen. In the end we'll just have to wait, see and probably cry because the angst is coming.

Final Thoughts

Okay! I went back and replayed the final sequence again and was much, much happier with both how everyone looked sans helmets and with some randomly varied flavor text in the background. I remain really, really happy overall with how this game ended both generally and for my particular runthrough.

The run-up to the Morphic Pool was really, REALLY creepy, and I liked the ways they threw all the li'l brainies at you to start wearing down the group resources. It does remain hilarious that the noodle-armed rogue was rowing the boat, though maybe that's why we couldn't get out of the way of the stalactite in time. The brain was fun gross and I couldn't quite tell--was the voice the same as the narrator? That would have been a nice touch! I did absolutely roll a natural 20 on that DC 99 check to Dominate the Brain (loved that setup in the dialogue window), but alas, the brain took off to destroy everything anyway. The biggest issue I had here was figuring out how to get past that dumb pile of rocks for that very mediocre chest.

In the Astral Plane, I managed to get enough brains to craft several potions of psychic resistance that I never used, but which made me feel better to have. There was never a chance my Tav was going to let Orpheus stay bound (I'm still working on her backstory, but I know she comes into the game feeling strongly anti-authoritarian and only gets moreso over the course of the events), so the only question I had was what was going to happen to the Emperor when I made that choice.

Sidebar--the Ansur fight & environ was one of my absolute favorite locales of the entire game. I loved the set design, the puzzles, the music, the reveals, and the final fight--I thought it was a fantastic setpiece altogether, and the reveal that the Dream Guardian was not only an illithid, but Balduran, made me actually gasp. Getting a conclusion to that questline as narratively satisfying as this one made me really happy, and Wyll's response to its conclusion with his dad--becoming the Blade of Avernus--I also thought was incredibly fitting for both that character and the choices he made within this world.

Anyway, I played through becoming an illithid just to see what happened (Astarion's comment about preferring any option that doesn't change your beautiful face--I felt that, bro), and as soon as I saw that grey triangle torso I was like, nope, sorry Prince, tagging you right back in on this one. Just can't do it, even when the fate of the city's on the line. I've spent too many hours looking at her janky eyes and her scarred lip to turn them all into tentacles now. I wasn't surprised the Emperor turned on me, but I didn't expect him to just full-on go Netherbrain and leave us in his rainbow skull.

I loved, loved, love the rally scene in the High Hall. What an awesome way to remind you of how many ways you've made a difference in some of these quests. The owlbear & Dannon along with the Strange Ox were my favorites, but seeing Barcus, Zevlor, and even Isobel & Dame Aylin was just wonderful. Really loved this entire sequence.

This is the first time I've ever really both utilized summoned allies in a big fight like this and also felt how much they turned the tide! A fantastic balanced encounter in the courtyard, and I called down so many Harpers & Fists & the owlbear & the dragonfire (so COOL) and Yurgir (got stuck in a building and did poke damage for the rest of the fight) and Rolan's tower (absolutely LOVED that you could save his fam & they could come live with him). It truly took an encounter that was really, really difficult into something absolutely manageable and in some ways quite easy. They told you to gather allies and by GOD I GATHERED ALLIES. I feel rewarded for my exploration!!

Of course, it then became utterly paramount to keep all summoned allies alive, but thankfully that wasn't much of an issue. My rogue by the end of this had Celestial Haste, two cunning action dashes, extra movement from momentum, and could easily clear 120+ ft a round and still have actions at the end of her movement. Plus she had a longbow that gave Guiding Bolt on a hit (GOD it's such a good longbow, I want to go back and play more combat just to play with it again), so even the few times the mindflayers were able to Dominate some Harpers I was able to get over there with either her or Lae'zel jumping rampart to rampart across the entire map & break their concentration. A super fun, exciting fight with a lot of variety. Orpheus is powerful as a mindflayer! The power is not small! He just doesn't have a horizontal mouth or a nose anymore & I can't do that to Tav!

Still never figured out how to get into that blocked-off area at the south of that map. Found a random forum post that suggested there was a chasm you could jump into to access the "Upper City Sewers," but the only things I found in the chasms was death, womp womp.

Anyway, got up to the brain (very cool cutscene! Not a snowball's chance my Tav was actually able to haul herself up that stem!) and REALLY liked the brain fight. I didn't have any issues navigating it (though a timer on the battle is always cool!) and only got Lae'zel & Orpheus killed once on the first run when I didn't understand how the Marked for Negation electric balls worked. The final cutscene where the brain fell in the water was beautifully animated; I loved seeing those NPCs keep cropping up in this sequence. I liked the image of everyone hauling themselves out of the bay onto the dock & Astarion complaining bitterly about how often he's having to swim on this trip.

My first run-through of the final dock conversation made me very sad. I didn't like Minsc's pithy comment about sunflowers for Astarion at all, and I hated watching Karlach's heart break behind that hideous helmet. (The stats were so good, and the aesthetics were so awful...she was in my party 99% of the time so Hide Helmet worked almost always...except when it mattered the most, ugh.) The second time, being able to see her face & Wyll's really helped that scene land and it really, really worked for me. I still don't think there's a fantastic in-universe Watsonian explanation for why we can't fix her engine for good with all these acres of infernal iron we've been collecting, but ACCEPTING THAT ON FACE VALUE FOR THE MOMENT I thought the writing and acting in that entire sequence were beautiful. Karlach's voice actress in particular just wrecked me. Beautiful, beautiful writing at the end; just wish the structural tentpoles were a little stronger to justify the moment.

On my second, helmet-less runthrough, when Astarion started to burn, Halsin made a much more sober comment along the lines of "he will miss that freedom; it may be some time before we see him again," and I much preferred that. It felt right in line with how my Tav felt about the situation, and she was very grateful for his empathy there. I still wish we'd figured out a way to have a celebration or something together, though I appreciate Wyll & Karlach's absence would have put a serious damper on things.

I am glad, I think, that I waited to see Karlach's ending after the patch. This read so determinedly hopeful, even with the very bittersweet sting, that I think to have anything less would have really undercut her journey even more than the options we currently have. All in all, I was very satisfied with sending her and Wyll to Avernus while we figure out how to fix her. Their final cutscene charging into the credits was the bomb.

The Astarion wrap-up scene was almost, ALMOST perfect. The choice to tell him we'd find a way to get him back in the sun was EXACTLY what I wanted to say (which was a theme in this game--there were only a handful of places in the entire game where I was frustrated by not being able to react the way I wanted--so impressive, Larian!). I just wish they'd been able to have one kiss in a room with walls and a ceiling, weh.

Anyway! The game is over, I'm immensely satisfied with all outcomes and party storylines with a few minor asterisks here and there, and I'm already plotting out several pieces to flesh out the places I want to explore. The characters are so rich and dynamic and reactive, the world feels so very real and robust, and I'm eager to live in it a little longer. I don't think I'm going to start another playthrough anytime soon--for me my first run is usually "canon", and I want to sit and marinate in this version of the world a little longer--but eventually I'll probably try a Durge just to see what the deal is. It'll honestly be incredibly hard not to romance Astarion, but we'll see! Maybe I'll just make Tavish again with a tweaked backstory. I don't know much about the Durge at all, so it'd be pretty blind!

What a good game. What a good time! I probably will go back and see what achievements I can pull easily--I was delighted to get one for "saving every tiefling possible through the end of the game," yeah boiiiii. Now to unblacklist everyone and see what the heck I've missed out on while spending every waking moment smooching an insufferable elf!

I was wondering if I could ask what Slade saw/was thinking when Dick was dancing? Is that when he fell in love? Thanks so much again :D

Thanks so much for your question!! And also for your patience for this response — I wanted to make sure I could sit down and reply fully 💙

The process of Slade falling in love in this fic happens very gradually, and mostly offscreen (which is why his actions often feel so confusing to Dick).

At various points in the background of the first half, Slade learns more details about what actually happened to Grant, Dick’s role in it, Dick’s role in Gotham in general, and also Dick’s relationship with Joey, and all of that shapes how he views and interacts with Dick. Then Dick saves him, and from this point on we see Slade discovering more and more about Dick onscreen, and falling deeper as time goes on.

For the dancing scene, I think it’s the first time Slade deeply appreciates Dick in an aesthetic sense. The first half was him really being drawn to Dick’s strength of mind and character, and when Dick dances is the first time Slade really notices his beauty, versus just kind of being aware of it.

Whether that was when he fell in love, I’ll leave to interpretation, since I think it is a bit of how you view it personally! Slade wanted to possess Dick before he wanted him, in a sense, so even in his POV it’s all muddled up (his brain is truly running on overdrive this entire fic lmao).

We would like to welcome everyone to our RINGSIDE interview and this month’s feature was conducted with one of the fastest rising stars on the wrestling scene, Mike Rotundo. Everyone who has seen this talented youngster in action agrees that he is a future superstar! Be on the lookout for this up and coming sensation for you definitely will be seeing and hearing quite a bit more about him in the future.

RINGSIDE: Mike, it’s a pleasure seeing you in action. I’ve watched you quite a bit in the last two months and you are very impressive. I really think that you have a very bright future ahead of you in professional wrestling.

MIKE ROTUNDO: Thank you very much for the compliment. It’s nice seeing you again and like you said, I feel that I do have a bright future. I basically attribute this to my background. I’ve been wrestling since I was 12 and I'm now 25 and since I’ve been in the Mid-Atlantic area I’ve been able to gain plenty of valuable experience from facing the caliber of top competition that is competing here.

RINGSIDE: Tonight, competing in Greenville, we have three World’s champions; two former champions as well as the current NWA World’s champion Harley Race. Will you be watching their matches?

ROTUNDO: That’s right! Ric Flair will be here trying to regain the World’s crown from Harley Race and that will be one exceptional match. Besides, Dory Funk Jr. will also be here and every opportunity I get I make it a point to watch the matches. You can learn so much just by watching top stars such as Flair, Race, and Funk. 

RINGSIDE: How many years are you wrestling professionally? ROTUNDO: I’ve only been wrestling a little less than two years.

RINGSIDE: Actually in two years time you have made a great deal of progress. How do you feel you would fare against the World’s champion at this stage of your career?

ROTUNDO: Right now it would take a great effort by me to win that belt but I have confidence to overcome any lack of experience which I may have. I know I am capable of defeating the World’s champion and on any given night anything could happen. 

RINGSIDE: What made you pursue a professional mat career? ROTUNDO: I was approached by a New York promoter after I won the Eastern championship for Syracuse University. He asked me if I was interested in a professional wrestling as a career and I told him that I was. I then began to watch the matches more intently and I became hooked. I always wanted to be a champion someday and when this opportunity came along I felt that I now had a chance to make something of myself. I trained hard and I’m happy that I chose this profession.

RINGSIDE: Were you always athletically inclined as a youngster?

ROTUNDO: Yes I was. In high school I wrestled and also played football and baseball and I was offered scholarships in all three sports to different universities across the country. I accepted a football scholarship to attend Syracuse where I played defensive end and I also wrestled. I‘ve been in sports and physical fitness all my life and I wanted to continue this. That’s the main reason why I got into professional wrestling. 

Actually for me, my best sport was wrestling. I really didn’t pursue baseball and I often wonder what would have happened if I pursued that. I caught and I had decent size for that sport too but as it worked out I excelled more in wrestling. I enjoyed playing football but I realized that the longevity of a professional wrestling career is much greater than one in professional football. 

RINGSIDE: How tall are you and what is your current weight?

ROTUNDO: I’m 6’2 ½” and I weigh 240 pounds.

RINGSIDE: You have a very impressive physique. How do you keep yourself in such superb condition?

ROTUNDO: Since I’ve been in this area I’ve been training with Rocky Steamboat who I feel has the best build and is the most athletic wrestler in the profession. He is able to keep that flexibility inside the ring and had numerous opportunities to train with him and he’s really helped me a lot. I’ve worked on the weights and I still do my running and quite a bit of stretching besides working on the various moves to use in the ring. 

RINGSIDE: Unlike many of the other wrestlers who have only been wrestling a couple years, you are very aggressive inside that ring. You never hold back and constantly go after your opponent. This oftentimes makes the difference between winning and losing. 

ROTUNDO: That’s correct. I feel that if you’re aggressive the people will support you. I go after my competitors with the purpose of pinning his shoulders to the mat. If you go after your opponent then you are in command and it makes it that much easier to come out on top. If you stay within the rules and wrestle, you will always have the people behind you.

RINGSIDE: Do you have any favorite finishing maneuvers?

ROTUNDO: I like the airplane spin the best. I feel if i could put my opponent up on my shoulders and spin him, then he has no control at all. I also use the roll-up-and-bridge which pins the man’s shoulders to the mat and when I bridge there simply is no escape. There are a lot of others. Actually I use whatever is best at that particular moment. You have to keep an open mind when you are in that ring and be ready for any situation which may airse. 

RINGSIDE: What is your nationality?

ROTUNDO: I’m Italian. My parents are from the U.S.A. but my descendants are from Florence, Italy. So the name Rotundo is definitely Italian. 

RINGSIDE: Over the years there have been many Italian superstars.ROTUNDO: That’s right. Bruno Sammartino for one is an idol that I’ve watched many times. I like his style of wrestling. He was aggressive and a former World’s champion too! I would love to go home someday and have the opportunity to wrestle in New York!

[Rotundo applies a side arm lock on Bill Howard.]RINGSIDE: When time presents itself what are some of the hobbies you may have outside the ring?ROTUNDO: I like to do some fishing. I used to hunt but I haven't had the opportunity to do too much hunting and I really love the beach, the sun, and the women. When I have time off I really like to go home to see my family and relax. As a professional wrestler, we have a very demanding schedule with the traveling and all the dates that we have to keep so any kind of hobby that involves relaxation is nice. 

RINGSIDE: We see that Jerry Brisco has now changed his style and is not adhering to the rules. The other night you had a little altercation with him. What happened?

ROTUNDO: Gerald and Jack Brisco, since they have captured the World tag team title from Rick Steamboat and Jay Youngblood have changed their outlook somewhat and it was just an incident where I was watching the match and Gerald passed a remark which I didn’t care too much for and we got into a little scuffle. Jack then came out to help his brother but Jay Youngblood was right there with me and we came out on top. RINGSIDE: Just like you have been doing in the Mid-Atlantic area! We hope to see you win a couple of championships here in the Mid-Atlantic and then eventually capture the big one, the World’s crown. ROTUNDO: I hope so too! Thank you very much and I want to also thank the fans who have been rooting for me and pulling for me everywhere I’ve appeared. They really mean a lot to me.

ok thoughts on the new episode,

SPOILER WARNING obviously

although honestly I don't think I'll be saying anything that others haven't already said haaaaa

anyway finally, a chance for morty's new VA to shine, and GOD does he. I love the way Evil Morty talks, idk why but that bored "uh huh" when Rick tries shooting him several times is soooo funny to me. he killed it and so did ian cardoni (the way he screams "I'LL KILL YOU" after slow mobius' death OOOOOUUUU CHILLS)

i honestly did not expect to see Evil Morty again, and even though I'm kinda sad he didn't get the lasting peace away from Rick that he wanted, he is a DELIGHT to see in action!! i love his interactions w Rick, it's so interesting having a Morty that's on par/better than Rick. although I'll be honest....he kinda feels like a Rick himself, especially w the cybernetic augmentations he also has--at least to me. Wonder if that's going to be brought up again later down the line, something about becoming the monster you fight against i LOVE how we got to see his backstory finally, like others have said I'm really happy that he was just a "normal" Morty. his Rick wasn't anything special. he literally was just a Morty who finally got sick of Rick's shit. i loved the reveal too, bc they DID have me going for a sec there, I thought who we were seeing was OUR morty Indiana Jones Rick 💘💘💘😳😳😳😳😳💦 that's all I'm saying on that And ok, DO I think Rick Prime is dead? like ACTUALLY dead? Honestly...yes. At least I hope so. I think it'd be FAR more compelling for Rick to be like "...now what?" and for the show to actually explore and unpack that, over it being like HAHA SURPRISE RICK PRIME'S NOT ~REALLY~ DEAD you know?

Because yeah. He got his revenge, the revenge he's literally been chasing...basically his entire life, like...since his, what, 30s? And it didn't feel good. It didn't fix things, it didn't make him feel better. He feels as empty as he did before and NOW he doesn't even have a goal to strive towards anymore. There's nothing. And I feel like the ending of the episode did a REALLY good job of portraying that just numbness. He probably fantasized about this moment the WHOLE time and it absolutely didn't live up to it. It wasn't glorious or feel liberating, he just ends up covered in blood and feeling more hollow and broken than before. That's just...kinda how trauma is Morty at first hesitating to touch Rick but eventually hugging him anyway was so sweet ;_; Anyway as for the cinematography of the episode itself...absolutely stellar. Great fights, the SCOPE of everything, the backgrounds and settings, it's wild how much this show has popped off with its animation (it's honestly so funny seeing them stitch in clips from Season 1 in there bc the CONTRAST in animation quality is astounding. its like when artists on twitter do the "my art from 10 years ago vs now" comparisons LOL. LITERALLY, SEASON 1 WAS 10 YEARS AGO). The just dead silence as Rick punches Rick Prime to death (only sounds of course being rick talking and punching), the whole exchange that happened during it, how just downright BRUTAL it was, that entire scene was crafted so well, and others have pointed out the significance of Rick literally beating Prime to death with his bare fists instead of using his tech or weapons or anything, which i feel like was definitely on purpose, and i love man this post ended up longer than i anticipated I'M SORRY. THIS EPISODE DESTROYED ME EMOTIONALLY AND I LOVE WHEN THIS SHOW DOES THAT ✌✨ MY BRAIN'S BEEN BUZZING. IF YOU READ ALL THIS RAMBLING THANKS I GUESS HLFDKSJFH

Before I keep working on my fanfics

Things I loved about catching up to miraculous and I wanna talk about them because oh my gods, so much happened:

The fact that we actually got massive lovesquare developments in not only on the adrienette side (which is the cutest side for me) but also on the marichat side! (which was pretty much almost as abandoned as ladrien tbh, also this is the side I find the dorkiest of them all) [Sidenote: I'm sad we didn't get more Ladrien tbh and the ladynoir was absolutely adorable for me, with those two dorks being supportive to each other and seeing sides of each other that hadn't seen before]

Lie-la got exposed as the liar she is (AND we discovered that she is actually a psychopathic liar to the point of having multiple identities and being good at disguising herself)

The interactions between the different characters we've seen until date and not only in the group class, we got to see a lot of interesting groupings, like Gabriel and Mayor André being friends from before their fame (and the shenanigans) or Marc and Zoe being included in the gang despite them being on another class.

Some characters got a lot deeper, like Mayor André who wished to be a movie director but circumstances got the better of him, Sabrina facing against Chloe after she armed herself with courage

We also got a ton of lgbtq+ representation, of the top of my head I can say Zoe being a sapphic queen and too good for her own good (I wish we get to see her get a cute date in the future, the girl deserves some love), I think that Ms.Bustier and her partner too (we didn't get much info on this one to confirm it sadly, but I so wanna know much more) and I forgot the specifics but I'm pretty sure I've seen on the background lots of characters that either had a deep bromance or something more, as well as other lgbtq+ representations.

There was character development, starting from Alec who went from jerk to genuine dork, our lovely sword woman Kagami who got through SO much in the span of two seasons (happy she got a guy tho I'm a bit uneasy of Felix and how quickly their love seemed to flourish, it needs some work which I totally plan to do in my fanfics). Even Chloe and Gabriel had some character development (granted, it was to worse but negative development is still development)

ROSE'S TAKE ON ADRIENETTE!!!!!! Gods! We've all have seen throughout the series that Rose is clearly a romance lover besides being our cute and strong pink ball of possitivity, we knew she loved cute things and also love stories. And then we got that wonderful scene where she demanded Adrienette kiss (which, ok, that wasn't the best move on her end) and then proceeded to call out Adrien and Marinette for being "So cute.... And so infuriating!" I was laughing for hours.

THE FUCKEN KWAMI OF REALITY?! KWAMIS HAVING COOL BADASS TRUE FORMS?! Needless to say, the last episode of season 5 broke me so hard with so many things, but those two in particular blew my mind because, holy molly guacamole with sticks of folly! I now am demanding to see the true forms of all the kwamis because me needs ittttttt!!!!!!

Chloe actually left Paris, this time apparently for good, and there was no redeem arc. Because although redeeming evil characters sometimes is good, Chloe's character hits way too close to home and I'm glad she ended up falling from her throne without a chance to redeem herself, because she got way too many chances during the series and yet she ignored each and every single one of them. (IF they want to redeem her now after she suffers the consequences of her actions, that would be more acceptable)

We got to see some bits of Marinette's past before the events of the series, which was a good way to give her character some more depth, explain how she could have survived so much bullying from Chloe and also give us an actual reason for her behavior around the ones she falls in love with

Also shoutout to Ondine for getting angry at Kim for pranking Marinette and playing with her feelings, that girl is no fool and from what we've seen, she will lead Kim to a better path (because let's face it, he needs someone closer than a friend to lead him to the right path, I'm sure Max is a good influence on him but my girl is going to go some steps further)

Loved the whole Bunnyx situation, because it made perfect sense and although some parts could be improved, it was overall written quite well and it added some rules to the use of each miraculous' powers

Ladybug and Chat Noir growing amid a difficult situation and managing not only to slow their detransformations, but also reversing them?! We got direct confirmation that only adults can stay transformed after using the power of their miraculous and, what's more, in the last special we also got to know that if it's used for evil, one can use multiple times the power of miraculous at the cost of their own lifespan.

Headcannons I got from season 4 and 5:

Felix is not a sentimonster: Although in "Representation" it was implied that he was one during the scene in which Kagami and Felix explain a story to Marinette through a sentimonster (they literally said that Felix's father was jealous of Gabriel for having impregnated Emilie while he couldn't impregnate Amelie, then he used the Peacock miraculous and Amelie suddenly got impregnated and had a child the same day Emilie did). I personally think that what happened is that Felix's father created a sentimonster that made Amelie to be pregnant like her twin out of his jealousy, which is why then Felix was born the same day as Adrien and they look so similar, since what I think that the sentimonster did was literally replicate what was happening on Emilie's womb in Amelie's womb (ngl it sounds disgusting and unethical in so many ways, but let's face it, from what we know of the guy it wouldn't be so unrealistic). At the same time, this is also reinforced by the fact that no one identified Felix as a sentimonster during the series, being able to pass as Adrien in multiple occasion even when Gabriel or Nathalie were using the miraculous of the Peacock, else the boy would have ceased to exist a long time ago after he made Gabriel angry (because we have seen just how cruel could Gabriel become, I wouldn't put it past him to erase the existence of his nephew if he was a sentimonster)

Emilie stans Adrienette like a proud mother and will get along with Tom and Sabine like a house on fire: Because I just need the trio of proud parents™ being totally supportive (and extremely nosy) towards their children. Also, Emilie's track record of parenting is practically empty as we basically haven't gotten introduced to her yet, but if she is anything like her twin Amelie... Adrien is in for a shower of love as he's never seen one before, both from his girlfriend's side and from his mother.

Amelie and Felix move permanently to Paris: If we know one thing about Amelie is that she loves her baby boy and she misses her sister, so now that her baby boy Felix is in love with a certain Japanese sword lady that resides in Paris and that her sister is back to life while Gabriel is no more... I may be wrong but I think this one is totally possible to happen in season 6 (which I'll be patiently waiting for, I only know it's supposed to be released on the final quarter of 2024)

Adrien will discover Gabriel was Hawk Moth: Let's be honest, there is way too many people that knew about Gabriel having a miraculous, including Felix (who cares about Adrien), maybe Kagami, Kagami's mother (we don't know what happened to her and she may be salty af if the wish didn't help her too, so she'd have a reason to reveal it to the world), his girlfriend Marinette, his mother most likely knows too, Lila (if that is even her real name, because who knows at this point) and Nathalie (whom I hope that is still alive after Gabriel's wish). I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there's more people that know, but what's clear is that with so many people knowing, Adrien is bound to be told by someone and it may as well be

Gabriel's wish was to undo the damage caused by the broken miraculous of the peacock: We all know that Gabriel made a wish and paid the price himself, but he never says out loud what his wish was, we only saw that one of the consequences was his death and the revival of Emilie Agreste. While it's true that his wish was probably to just bring Emilie back, his actions after betraying Marinette's trust did show that he was a bit remorseful of how he had acted, so there's a tiny bit of hope.

And finally, about the movie, I have to say that, while I did like some of the concepts like Hawk Moth employing literal criminal prisoners in order to do his bidding (which makes a lot of sense given how easy they would accept his power even without needing to wait for them to be angry), I got tired really quick from all the songs and the personalities of everyone were a bit random, tho this last part was enjoyable from time to time.

I might end up making a post ranting about the things I didn't like in the last two seasons, but for now this is it and I'll get to writing my fics as soon as I post this (Tho maybe I'll work on updating some stuff from my fics to ensure they are not complete nonsense now). Stay tuned!

seasonal animes: tengoku daimakyou 05-07

caught up on Tengoku Daimakyou (to S01E07) and Oshi no Ko (S01E05).

Tengoku Daimakyou continues to be great, in all the ways it was at the outset. It’s kind of crazy. Gorgeously animated, and full of life and character. Like, it wouldn’t look bad in a movie and they’re somehow pulling it off for a full cour of TV.

Not only have Production I.G. still got it, but it even feels like an advancement - there’s none of the very reserved stiffness that I kind of associate with TV shows like GitS:SAC or Seirei no Moribito, it’s constantly lively. The lively way it moves, and the slightly rounded character design, puts me in mind of Dennou Coil, but with a strong dash of the old realist movement mixed in.

In many ways I have the same things to say about these three episodes as I did the first four. It’s beautiful. The background paintings wonderfully depict an overgrown post-apocalypse. The action is well-choreographed and weighty. The individual episode scenarios are strong, and the unfolding mystery is intriguing. Weilin Zhang’s OP is a treat.

Sexuality is a huge theme of this series, and it’s worth spending a minute on how they play it. I spoke previously about the MC who at first glance seems to be a trans man but is actually a wacky sci-fi brain transplant patient. They’re continuing to play up the sexual tension between the two MCs hard, mostly for antics and escapades (episode 6 in particular); this is in turn used as a symbol of Kiruko struggling to decide who to be, caught between male and female behaviour codes.

Which ends up being interesting; it’s not a 1:1 map to like, the Specific Trans Experience but it is full of resonances. You could read it as a trans guy thing (he’s literally a guy with a body that everyone reads as female) but there’s also aspects of a trans girl thing (renegotiating the whole complicated mess we call ‘socialisation’). A good scifi device is a probe to give us a different angle on the world... and while I don’t want to oversell it, it does lead a fun dynamic between the MCs once you calibrate yourself to what it’s going for. (The level of horniness is broadly comparable to Chainsaw Man - jokes about boners and boob touching, a few almost-sex scenes.)

And the portrayal of awkward intimacy generally feels quite warm and genuine - it’s a far cry from whatever the hell was happening in that one nurse scene in GitS:SAC S2. The current generation of animators at I.G. are really onto something. In general it does a very good job of conveying emotion - take for example the scene where Kiruko returns to the house and finds Maru missing in Episode 5, you can really feel her sense of rising panic.

It’s also delivering very well on the horror front. Episode 7, in which our MCs walk into a conflict between a group of primmies and a transhumanist cult, seamlessly slips into a hallucination sequence where Kiruko is bitten apart by monsters. At first I was wondering if they were really going to inflict a permanent injury on the MC, especially since the buildup had a lot of talk of prosthetic limbs. They didn’t go there in the end, but it’s good that they’re finding ways to still make the monsters threatening. It’s also very good at shifting registers; in episode 6 the MCs fight a bear, and it does a fine job of telling a small story arc within the battle, advancing the MCs’ relationship, and dancing between action and comedy (when it turns out not to be a bear monster but a regular bear).

Of course, there’s also the creepy school for psychic children, who are also dealing with the struggles of puberty and first relationships etc. This is mainly a B plot in the most recent episodes, although I’m sure the focus will swing back there soon. One thing I like about the approach taken here is that the adults running the facility appear to genuinely care for the children, and they don’t seem to know everything that’s going on either. When one of the children dies they’re hit with grief (and guilt!) as much as the kids; when they find a weird nonflammable organ inside them after cremation, they’re shocked, not going ‘all according to keikaku’. It feels like a situation that’s out of control despite all the fancy technology.

Evil experiments on children is a familiar subject for anime of course, and the parent-figure who does horrible experiments on their wards while still performing affection a familiar figure within that. But while the adults here are definitely up to no good, their attitudes and motivations seem a bit less out there than your average evil science dad. Even so, the storyboarding effectively accentuates the prison-like aspect of the school; particularly effective is a sequence (screenshotted above) where the dead child is solemnly wheeled away from the other children, and taken behind the doors where they are not allowed to go; the only one who can pass through that door is dead.

Of recent anime, Mappa’s Chainsaw Man seems like a relevant point of comparison, which also went for a constantly moving sense of cinematic realism, leaning on young webgen animators for the flashy scenes. I had a great time with Chainsaw Man but it was uneven - sometimes truly great, other times it felt like it was trying a little too hard to show off with technical flexes, and not every beat landed. Tengoku Daimakyou wasn’t so hyped, so it doesn’t have as much to live up to, but its style feels a bit better integrated overall.

I also have to praise the compositing! The colours are generally really well chosen, the right level of saturation and contrast, the digital effects (typically a subtle bloom) aren’t overbearing the way they were so often in the 2010s. (Incidentally, there seems to be minimal 3DCG in this show). The ‘look’ of 2020s anime is extremely varied of course, but in some ways it feels like a return of a lot of things I really liked in 90s anime.

All in all, this is really living up to the promise set when I first thought “damn that was a cool trailer”. I hope they get to continue it for more, but either way I think I’ll pick up the manga once the series is done, it’s got its hooks in me hehe

The Art of Art: What works for contests?

Most of us are not visual artists—or at least I assume. What I also assume is that in the early days of card design, most new designers have visions for their cards but not the specific art to execute them. And so, we trawl the internet, put some "placeholder" art, and the cards rest in peace in our MSE folders from there on out.

In order to avoid any possibilities of uncredited art, fair use issues, etc., it still remains best practice to do everything as originally as possible. That does indeed include what art appears on a card. And yes, like I said, most of us aren't visual artists, but there are other approaches that will work best. For example:

1. Art Direction!

Here are two winning examples from previous contests, from @hiygamer and @starch255. A written scene can demonstrate the card in the same manner that art direction is given to the actual artists who create pieces for Wizards of the Coast. Clear action, simple direction, and a feeling for the mood are all that's needed to convey what you want.

The most important thing about art descriptions is to keep them brief and specific! If you can't clearly describe what's happening in the scene, then the jumbled elements feel disconnected from the card. If the art description is too detailed, then it can sometimes get in the way of the actual mechanics being judged.

One more thing to note is that, like in these examples, it's helpful to put the art description where the card's actual art would be. This way, anyone looking at your card can see what they're supposed to at first glance.

2. Sketches!

On the left, here's some previous contest art from @bread-into-toast, and on the right—art from me! You don't have to have access to much to draw the outline of what you'd like, and you can get across what you want to without worrying about judgement on that front.

Drawing your own pieces is both fun and functional. Once you have an idea of what you'd like, it doesn't matter what it looks like on paper, because it's entirely your own creation through and through. We can extrapolate even more about intent from it, and as Magic players, we know what truly professional/polished art looks like. Taking that imaginative step is easy and fun!

And yes, you have to credit the artist at all times, even when it's yourself. Who are you to deny your own greatness?

3. A combination of both?

@deg99 won the most recent contest with Bone Fetcher, and I won absolutely nothing with this old example card for a contest that I don't even remember what it was about. So let's look at Bone Fetcher instead. What does having both elements to for this card?

If just the dog and the skeleton were there, that would be wonderful, but then we'd miss out on the precise tone of the piece. With just the text, we'd get a good description, but the arm in the foreground shows the dramatic tilt of the camera that I'm assuming Deg intended here. You get the best of both worlds!

And sometimes one or the other is good enough. Which is fine! Maybe a little art direction can help with a rough sketch, maybe it can assume some positioning for you, etc.

I'll say this: there was one piece I can't find where a bunch of stick figures were placed around a crude torch, and the art description turned those little MS Paint dudes into a dramatic, heartfelt scene that still jars me even to this day. I've almost cried at the depiction of a ghost-laded squiggle-guy whose card told a full story about his impending death.

We don't need a massive budget to make the cards come alive visually. Words and sketches are all that we require, and it helps to ensure that you follow the best ethical practices for your cards. Don't like the MSE backgrounds? Zoom in on a piece until you only see pixels, or use a solid color! Don't have a steady hand? Show us the unsteady vision! There are many options available, and we accept all of them, just like we accept you.

infodump to me please.

ok but as you may know i am hyperfixating on a dnd series that none of tumblr cares about. it’s 1 For All DND by Deerstalker Pictures on Youtube and it is so funny and chaotic and well-made. i think i saw in a behind the scenes video that they film with a black magic camera (which i have seen in practice before and it’s. like. very good and expensive) and edit with adobe premiere (my beloved).

anyway series concept is that there are four Guys—Patrick the DM and his three players Eva, Antonio, and Nicole. Eva plays a half-elf fighter called Evandra who is tough and cool and scary and also bisexual. she has a sword and armor. sometimes she’s the common sense and sometimes she is Not. is that not top-notch character design? also her hair gets progressively cooler throughout the series which is very amazing of her.

Antonio plays a human bard named Antrius, who is incredibly full of himself, flirts with everyone (including a villain he successfully seduced, two paladins, evandra, his rival bard, a vampire, a random knight, a dwarven couple whose child evandra murdered, himself, etc), carries a lute but also plays everything from a kazoo to an accordion. he once said, “There’s no I in team. There’s an A, though—which stands for Antrius!” before doing a silly dance.

then there’s Nicole’s character, a tiefling sorcerer named Nixie. she can be a bit on the oblivious side—her intelligence score is zero—but she makes up for it with FIRE. like. literal fire. she’s adorable and pink but also she has one plan ever and it’s FIREBALL. also she likes women. when she was a kid she accidentally burnt her whole family to a crisp, probably due to wild magic and repression. disaster.

then there’s Pat the DM. who just wants a nice campaign. he also plays Every NPC (excluding a few roles later on) regardless of species and gender. he has to put up with the party’s shenanigans, which are exhausting, but he clearly does enjoy what he does, which is nice.

of course, this alone is great potential for a series—but what really brings it in for me are the side characters. aka guest players. over the course of the series, there have been a LOT of those: Vlithryn the triton cleric who’s tired of the party, Annandale the warlock who everybody hates, Dargle-Bark the… eccentric druid, Lorienne the paladin (who eva and antonio flirt with both in and out of character), the catlike Rogue who Nixie flirts with and Evandra hates, Mogdar the pacifist half-orc barbarian artist, Godfreya the incredibly amazing paladin, and my personal favorite—Zephyr the air genasi bard, who a) is Antrius’s ex, b) is Antrius’s rival, c) flirts with Antrius despite all this, d) is a bit (read: a lot) of a prick actually, and e) is crushingly insecure and cries himself to sleep.

that last character appears in a one-shot and one full episode, but that doesn’t stop him from being my blorbo. i have also watched the episode and gone over each shot and frame so many times that yesterday i realized that there’s a mistake towards the end where his flute switches hands in the very last shot of him. because i’m at that point where i have to see every facial expression from every character in that (musical!) episode, including nixie and evandra’s glorious background actions.

there’s also another earlier musical episode, which happens to be the best-rated episode of the series. the party’s been captured, and antrius (mis)uses bardic inspiration to get them out of it—and it’s beautiful. it’s just beautiful. wonderful cinematography, wonderful singing, wonderful lyrics, wonderful acting, wonderful script, just wonderful.

the episodes are short which is great if you have a wildly fluctuating attention span like me. the characters are often terrible people but they’re somehow still likable and hilarious. tw for extreme fantasy violence and sex jokes, but it’s a great series with great humor and the rest of tumblr needs to watch it so i can see fanart and fanfic without having to make it myself. you guys would love annandale
