Your answer to that summarized all of my thoughts perfectly, Ace! I started planning for what was going to be my first  whumptober this year because I finally had the time and then gave up because it was just too difficult and I ended up lacking the motivation for it in the end.
I think there was the assumption that the vague, abstract ideas would be fun and help and allow people to get creative but they really, really didn't! I don't want to have to spend time wracking my brain for ideas when you're already stretched for time to get everything done as it is. I mean, come on, polaroid, scented candle, playing cards??? What on earth are we supposed to do with that?
On the other hand, When the prompts are too specific it just really limits what you can make and it's not only a case of are there even any examples of that out there but is it something I want to gif? Like okay, if I thought hard enough or did a bit of research, I could maybe think up one or two examples for a prompt but it may not be from a show or actor I even like. Gif making takes a lot of time and energy, so do I want to waste time giffing something I don't even enjoy just to complete the challenge? With a prompt like stabbed there's so much you can do with that. Or even something like oxygen mask, I can think of a tonne of examples. Like give us "sweat(y)" rather than something super specific like "sweat drenched sheets",. because you might as well be giving us "sweat drenched yellow t-shirt with a purple unicycling tabby cat simultaneously juggling and eating a 3 cheese pepperoni pizza on the front."
And the dialogue prompts are always a struggle, the fact we had 31 of those for whumptober made things so difficult. I mean "I'm not as stupid as you think I am," that's just so specific! If we have to have those there needs to be less of them, or they should just stick to words like "stay" or "breathe" where we can use that as part of a larger dialogue. Making it more specific like "stay with me," "please stay," just makes it harder.
Also, the distinct lack of care and comfort prompts is always so saddening. The comfort is just as important as the hurt itself to me. Give me things like hair stroking, carried, held etc. or hell, just comfort in general as a prompt on it's own.
And as you said, less whumper based prompts! There are other ways for a character to hurt without involving a whumper! Sick, fever, withdrawal, whatever. And I'd like more emotional based prompts too, because I've always preferred that over physical whump anyway!
I get it's going to be difficult to cater to everyone's wants and needs but I'd just love for things to be made a little easier is all.
Yes yes yes!!! Exactly!!! All of that!!! 👏👏👏
Oh my, you have no idea what a relief it is to know I'm not the only with these feelings! That I'm not the only gifmaker having trouble with those kinds of prompts, who wants more comfort and whumper less tropes! Thank you. God I'm glad I'm not alone. They're just so hard to think of examples that it feels like I spend 90% of my prep time finding scenes and then frantically trying to make the actual gifs just before it's time to post. Which is the fun part! The making is the fun part! And this takes away all the fun of it.
I am so seriously beginning to think I need to make a gif making prompt month challenge thing. It seems like a lot of us are on the same page lately and it'd be so nice to have a challenge designed for gifmaking specifically.

i don’t know if anyone else has this but i hate this conflicting feeling i get where im hesitant to start a new series because im afraid im gonna be obsessed with it and move on from the current (multiple) hyperfixations, you know what i mean.…
anyhow, wake up my darlings! a new series just dropped that starts off with whump— gets whumpy in its first two episodes. a fun sci-fi/spy thriller that has it’s main character, a spy, wake up in a hospital with no memory of who or what he is and his body riddled with scars. ooouuu good (jason bourne) trope right there.
oh, main character played by richard madden aka robb stark aka david budd aka ikaris… hubba hubba!

Currently editing my already published Stranger Things gifs cus they're still really dark. Here's a peek at what I'm working on! I especially want this scene to be visible! Unfortunately my Graphics Card isn't allowing acceleration so I can't get rid of some of the graininess with the VR DeNoiser... ugh.
Here's a split-screen of the original video and my edit.

I just unfollowed, blocked and deleted a whump blog from the gifmaker list for posting anti-trans and pro-life content.
Everyone can post their political views and opinions on their own blog however they like, of course. But I want MY blog to be a safe space for everyone. I want people to be able to come here, look at whump gifs (and maybe a few pictures of cats) and nothing else. That also applies to the blogs I recommend.
This is why I usually refuse to post political/ social topics and never participate in any discourse. Therefore I will not name any names and I will not answer any asks regarding this decision. Please also refrain from starting any discourse on this post. Thank you.

So I figured I should have a lil introductory post. Hi!
Been on Tumblr for years, been a whump fan for much longer, so it was about time I made a whump (side)blog.
I'm a gifmaker, so I'll be doing original posts as well as reblogs, gifs will be from various fandoms, all will be fully tagged.
Hope to have some fun here... 😈😉

My dearest Tumblr Friends,
I’ve been putting this off for far too long, so here goes.
I’m not sure how many of you may know this, but TAT has been around since 2017. 2017! Can you believe it? That’s five years. Five years, 260 weeks, and over 13,000 posts, to be exact, and I’ve been around for every single one of those 5 years, 260 weeks, and 13,000 posts.
I know the issues I went away for a bit to ponder are polarizing with many a strong opinion on all sides, but I think we can all agree that 5 years is a very long time. A lot can change in five years: a community, for one, and a blogger for sure. I am certainly not the same person I was 5 years ago, and I think that fact is starting to show. My personal squicks and triggers were beginning to interfere with my ability to run this event as the open and honest space it deserves to be.
That being said, it is with a heavy and yet relieved heart that I am announcing my retirement as the custodian/moderator of TAT.
I do want to make one thing perfectly clear to anyone who may feel this is not the right decision to make. Stepping down as moderator of TAT isn’t about me cowing to anon hate or the discourse in the community previous events generated. This is about me, the person who runs this blog, who is ready to hand the reins over to someone else after 5 years at the helm of an incredible project that was imagined up by a fellow whumper. An event that was entrusted to me 5 years ago and transformed into one of the longest running and, if I may be so bold, one of the most popular events in the community.
What it all boils down to is that I am ready to move on. I’m ready to focus on other things like my writing (I want to try my hand at writing a novel!) and gifmaking. I want to take a step back, hang up my spurs, tuck up beside the fire and enjoy the fruits of the community I’ve helped build. I want to retire.
One thing has become very clear to me over the course of the last year or so, and friends have even pointed this out to me on more than one occasion. I haven’t been happy running TAT for a while now. In the words of Marie Condo, it no longer sparks joy. I was canceling the event more and more and you guys deserve better. TAT deserves better. It deserves a moderator who is excited about tropes and who isn’t on the verge of a burn out. (And I am dangerously close to that precipice.) I want to be able to enjoy tropes again. I want to write them and read them for fun and comment on them, not because I have to, but because I want to. And so, I think my tenure as moderator has come to a natural close. I want to step aside on a high note, and 13,000 posts seems like a pretty good high note to me, don’t you think?
I think TAT has a lot of life in her yet and I don’t think it should go away just because I have made the decision to step down. I was thinking I could possibly rename the blog to archive the previous posts so that the TAT name could be reused and someone new could take over. I would only ask that it be made clear that I am no longer affiliated or providing input for the blog and the owner would be free to do with it what they will. If anyone is interested, please contact me over DM to discuss. The askbox will remain closed.
I know I said above that I’m dangerously close to a burn out, but that does not mean I haven’t enjoyed every single moment of running this blog. Or of interacting with the amazing members of this incredible community. I am going to miss seeing those 100+ asks in my askbox every week. I’m going to miss getting that first glimpse at the limitless creativity and infectious enthusiasm you all have for whump. This has been an incredible 5 years and I can’t thank you all enough for all the support, love, and understanding you’ve shown me over the years.
I will forever be grateful to you all for making TAT so incredibly special.
Yours in whump,
Marie

I think I figured out why I'm not seeing as many whump gifsets as I used and I think it's because no one is using the #whumpedit tag anymore 😂😭
I just went into the general #whump tag and narrowed down by photo and there's lots of gifsets in it I've never seen cause I haven't gone into the general tag in ages (it's usually full of oc writing which just great but just isn't what I'm looking for so I've not gone into that tag in ages).
Guys why isn't anyone using the #whumpedit tag anymore?!
Gifmakers, artists, visual media creators use the #whumpedit tag to increase visibility! The #whumpedit tag is specifically for that stuff. If you use that it will help increase visibility for your creations. I will for sure see it cause I check that tag almost daily looking for new gifsets.
If you made whumpy gifs I highly encourage you to add the #whumpedit tag to your posts!!

@Whumpookies, you're so right! I'd love to participate in more whump challenges but the prompts are always geared more towards writing whether it's deliberate or not. It's disheartening. I was so excited to partake in Whumptober but the prompts were so difficult even with the 4 prompts a day and the alt prompts. I wish more consideration was put into thinking about us poor gifmakers lol. Anyway happy new year to you! And loving the new icon 😉
Cookies!
I think for most the fear of making gifs thinking it takes "forever" stops people from trying, so it's not really thought about or explored.
Yet things like Photoshop, imgflip, and Make a GIF are out there to make it easier compared to once upon a time 🤣
Someone told me that for one recent prompt challenge, there were only 8 GIF makers.
There was a list by @whumpty-dumpty back in 2021 and was updated in early 23 I think 🤔 that had a list of over 50 gifmakers at the time.
When it comes to prompts it's a case for gif makers to think "out of the box" For instance take the word: broken.
To a writer it's easy, artist pretty simple...to a GIF maker well we start thinking..broken, so broken-hearted? broken leg? Broken family? broken mind? And so on.
It's a head-hurting concept! But yet it's also intriguing at the same time.
Yet like I was talking to @aceofwhump yesterday we burn out, we think about the gif and go all out...23 gifs later for one prompt and we're burning out and wondering what next.. it's not easy.
Yet I do wonder if a prompt challenge just for gifmakers was out there somewhere would it bring us together? Would it make the gif makers broaden their horizons from their cliche genres?
Would a vintage whumper gif create a futuristic gifs?
Would a Kdrama giffer create a vintage drama scene?
It makes you wonder and yet it is the pure fact it sounds like bloody fun to consider it could happen!!!
Happy New Year and thanks I love my new icon, though I keep getting cookie peckish every time I see it 😁🤣

Let's Talk Whump No.11
Welcome to Let’s Talk Whump, a series of interviews that spotlight the amazing people in our whump community. I’m Malice and I’ll be your host.
Today we have @zillstar13 joining us to share their whump story!
Good to have you here, Abraham! Let’s start with a fact about yourself?
I collect all sorts of things. From antique dolls, to rocks, to old bottles, to rusty metal trash, to Halloween decorations.
And what does whump mean to you?
A story or art piece centered around a character being hurt in some way, especially if it is posted to the internet or put in a zine.
My writing is whump. Dracula is whump. The doodles of Marie Antoinette I drew in elementary school are whump. It's very vague and fluid, just how I like it.
How did you find the whump community? What made you want to join?
Tumblr. My friend Mac N Cheese supported my exercises in writing whump before I was bold enough to post anything. He doesn't write whump (as of right now, I'm trying to get him hooked) but has been beta reading my writing since I started posting.
Has your view on whump changed since you joined? Are there tropes you now love/hate that you didn't at first? Maybe your choice of OC vs Fandom? Or even your style ie going from mainly writing to gifmaking or art?
I used to hate most vampire whump. My first series, Our Man Flint, was a vampire whump story with heavy focus on colonial America period folklore and Puritan beliefs.
I couldn't stand most modern interpretations of vampires written by people lacking my vast knowledge of Slavic and colonial folklore. But it's grown on me tons since then.
I still very much prefer folklore vampires, or ones similar to Bram Stoker's Dracula. But modern vampires stripped of historical context can be fun sometimes. I do appreciate how fluid they are as a species.
I guess Mill coaxed me out of my shell after I coaxed him in the complete opposite direction.
Do you have any favourite whump trope?
I love whump based on religion and folklore. Whether it be real/historical or invented for the story. Spirits, vampires, gods, and whatever else. It is simply fascinating and scratches a particular niche in my brain.
What is a favourite piece that you've written? Hype yourself up, we want to hear it!
I love all of my work. But at the moment I simply adore Blood Sacrifices. Its position as my favorite will probably have changed by the time this is posted.
It's an ongoing story about a vampire posing as a pagan god to take advantage of a society practicing human sacrifices. It's very dark for obvious reasons, but human sacrifice is such an interesting concept to me.
There is a lot of religious abuse, for obvious reasons. Including heavily explored emotional and sexual abuse of one of the priests, and straight up torture of another. I view some of it as dark comedy, but in a truly twisted sense. And it could easily be interpreted as completely serious.
I haven't gotten to delve into all of the folklore and religion yet, but boy do I have some amazing things planned.
Religion based whump is so good! Do you mind sharing your writing routine with us?
I write every day, but the amount fluctuates wildly. I mostly write when I'm supposed to be doing something else, like cleaning or eating, but the executive dysfunction is throttling my brain.
I write a lot in the evening. I drink a lot while writing. But that's incidental as I always have water, tea, coffee, or hot chocolate right on hand.
Is there anything you struggle with writing? What comes easily for you?
I'm really good at writing emotional abuse, gas lighting, religious abuse, manipulation, and all that sort of thing. Writing is 80% trauma and 20% skill and I'm banking on the trauma, with a splash of purple prose for good measure.
I have a hard time writing about recovery. I write hurt/no comfort. I cannot find it in me to let my traumatized characters recover. Some people find it cathartic, but I'm the opposite. If I'm stuck with my trauma, they are too. I don't vibe with writing healing arcs.
Is there anything you're working on at the moment?
I have so many ongoing series, it isn't even funny anymore. I'm participating in the Whumpay event. I passed Whumpril with flying colors and am hoping to keep up the energy. The final chapter of Our Man Flint is slowly being picked away at but I have little motivation at present.
Do you have any advice for our readers?
Write the most deranged things possible. Project your traumas and insecurities onto all of your characters. Weave pieces of your past, present, and future into the narrative that it can't be separated from you.
Your writing will be much better if you pour your heart and soul into it. It will feel horribly vulnerable at first, but that does get better. And I enjoy it much more than I ever enjoyed writing popular cliches and random two dimensions ideas.
Shout out to your favourite writing/whump blogs, bffs or people who've inspired you. We're hyping everyone one up here!!!
@elim-flower For supporting me so well, being a truly amazing best friend, talking through all of my problems, and letting me draw us as a vampire and a ferret.
@heavenly-whumper For being my best friend in the whump community, and outside of it, and for keeping all my secrets and letting me keep yours.
@devourerofcheesecake For letting me use our coffee/antique shop dates as an excuse to ramble about my writing for hours on end.
@whumpshaped For helping me through all the niche fears of being a writer with NPD, and saying deranged things about my characters whenever I post.
@whumpsday For all the truly extensive moral support, acceptance, good advice, optimism, and being a fantastic source of supply.
@skittles-the-whumpee For being a good friend and staying up late talking with me about our lives, pasts, fears, hopes, and problems.
Anything you'd like to add? <3
I fucking love this god forsaken community.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, @/zillstar13!
And to all you folks at home, have a whump-derful day!
