WORLD NEWS
Pakistan: Train barrels into another, killing at least 40 (AP)
"An express train barreled into another that had derailed in Pakistan before dawn Monday, killing at least 40 people, authorities said. More than 100 were injured, and rescuers and villagers worked throughout the day to pull survivors and the dead from the crumpled cars."
China: Birth-control policy could cut millions of Uyghur births (BBC)
"The new study, by researcher Adrian Zenz, is the first such peer-reviewed academic paper on the long-term population impact of China's crackdown on the Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang. In his report, Mr Zenz writes that by 2019 Xinjiang authorities 'planned to subject at least 80% of women of childbearing age in the rural southern four minority prefectures to intrusive birth prevention surgeries, referring to IUDs or sterilisations'. Reports also say authorities have intentionally moved people from the mainstream Han Chinese population into parts of Xinjiang previously dominated by ethnic minorities, and forcibly transferred Uyghurs out."
Canada: Statue toppled at indigenous school amid protest (BBC)
"Egerton Ryerson is deemed one of the architects of Canada's controversial residential school system. His statue had already been vandalised earlier in the week after the suspected remains of 215 children were found. Kamloops was the biggest of Canada's compulsory boarding schools run by the government and religious authorities during the 19th and 20th Centuries with the aim of forcibly assimilating indigenous youth."
US NEWS
Winston Boogie Smith Jr: Protest erupts again over man killed by Minneapolis deputies (AP)
"Photos from the scene following a vigil for Winston Boogie Smith Jr., 32, showed dumpster fires in the street and a line of officers standing guard. It was the second night of protests in response to the fatal shooting Thursday in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood. Police said 27 people were arrested in the protest, with 26 accused of rioting and one facing a weapons charge."
Lindani Myeni: No mass protests after Honolulu police shoot, kill Black man (AP)
"Lindsay Myeni and her South African husband moved to Hawaii, where she grew up, believing it would be safer to raise their two Black children here than in another U.S. state. Three months after they arrived, Honolulu police shot and killed her husband, 29-year-old Lindani Myeni, who was Black. Police released two brief clips from body camera footage, but it’s difficult to make out what is happening in the dark. Three shots ring out and then an officer exclaims, 'Police.'"
USPS: Postmaster evokes Trump style in Biden era (AP)
"'Get used to me,' DeJoy told critics in Congress during a hearing earlier this year. As he approaches his first anniversary at the U.S. Postal Service’s helm, DeJoy is under mounting pressure to resign. He’s been criticized by lawmakers from both parties for changes to the agency that have resulted in service slowdowns. Democrats are particularly worried that he’s purposefully undermining the post office, which is critical to the conduct of elections and is one of the few federal agencies a vast majority of Americans like."

The man who assaulted protestors with his car, murdering Deona Marie Erickson, has been charged with intentional second-degree murder, the maximum sentence--if he is convicted--will be 40 years: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/16/us/nicholas-kraus-minneapolis-protests.html
It is important to note that Minneapolis' local government made promises to create a separate reviewing body for their police department after the murder of George Floyd by police on May 25, 2020, however, the legislative process has been slow, and the vote to shift city funds towards community support instead of cops is not scheduled until fall of this year: https://www.npr.org/2021/05/25/1000298293/a-year-after-george-floyds-death-plans-for-minneapolis-police-reform-have-soften
In the meantime, while Derek Chauvin was found guilty of George Floyd's murder, the other three officers' trials have been pushed back til August 2021: https://www.npr.org/sections/trial-over-killing-of-george-floyd/2021/04/21/989465546/whats-next-in-the-trials-of-4-former-police-officers-over-george-floyds-murder
When schools teach about public policy work, they constantly remind students that there is a long process between an inciting incident and the point in which actual legal change happens. Laws take a long time to get written and a longer time to turn into provisions that are enacted. Which, yes, yes, great, people are trying for progress, but when the message is "we must be patient, change is happening" this is what we get.
We get authorities murdering Winston Boogie Smith Jr. scarcely two weeks after the anniversary of George Floyd's murder, while a policy draft for police reform is sitting on the desks of the city commission.
There are some things that cannot wait for the slowness of the legal process.
As of April 2021, across the United States, police have murdered 181 Black people.
Every hour spent debating back and forth about the best track to take regarding anti-Black police violence in this country is another person's life snuffed out, another family devastated another community memorial.
Abolish the police. Not Reform. Not Defund.
Abolish. The. Police.

Demonstrators and city leaders struggled Tuesday for control of one of Minneapolis' busiest streets, 12 days after the law enforcement killing of Winston Boogie Smith Jr. and two days after a protester was killed by a speeding driver.
Smith's death during an attempted arrest by U.S. marshals — who were not wearing body cameras — launched daily protests at the Uptown intersection of Lake Street and Girard Avenue.
Protester Deona Knajdek was killed in the zone Sunday when a driver collided with another car being used as a roadblock to prevent vehicles from driving into demonstrations in the middle of the street.
On Monday night and Tuesday morning, protesters succeeded in barricading graffitied streets with upturned lampposts, wooden pallets and construction signs. Trash bags heaped in alleys prevented traffic from entering the protest zone from the north and south.

THE STREET ART MOVEMENT IN MINNEAPOLIS
With the spike in street art all across the Twin Cities due to the unjust murders of George Floyd, Daunte Wright, and Winston Boogie Smith, local artists and protesters have come together to paint the city in vibrant colors. This movement has not only connected people, but marked the city with a daily reminder that justice has not been served for the killings of innocent Black men in the United States.
