I love NEGATIVE LITERATURE. I mean I love when literature is not romanticised or it’s not about how beautiful the nature is , I love it when it is not appreciating the little things, I love it when it is being cruel and unhinged, I love it when literature is not about love stories and lovers and I love it when it is not about good people, I love it when it is not about the stars or the moon or the galaxies but it is about death and how cruel it is, I love Wuthering Heights because I love how cruel Heathcliff was and how it is not a love story but rather it is about damnation and ruin of families and several lives. I love it when in Literature people kill each other cruelly and doesn’t feel any guilt or remorse, that is the true nature of human and I want it to be true and unhinged and I want the sky to be irritated by the stars because it doesn’t alway have to be beautiful and romantic.

One thing I love about the harringrove fandom is the agreement both that Steve is dyslexic and Billy is a MASSIVE reader.
Because while Steve’s always been surrounded by teachers or his parents or exes who either believe that he’s incapable of appreciating reading or that he just doesn’t care, Billy thinks that’s bullshit.
Because when Billy gets told to tutor Steve in English, he doesn’t start with a book for toddlers or fucking Shakespeare. They start with Billy reading him Wuthering Heights.
And at first Steve does not fucking get it. He doesn’t understand the plot, the message and especially not the dialect. But he finds himself enjoying it a lot. Billy’s a natural storyteller. He could be on stage.
Billy’s taste in books is both eclectic and weird. He’s reading Finnigan’s Wake for fun. In Irish. He likes Portuguese romance books and German surrealism and a lot of George Orwell. So much so that Steve kind of feels that love rubbing off on him.
He’d used to like reading. Before he was told he was doing it wrong. And even though he despised the books set by Hawkins High with every fibre of his being, there was this fire set in his belly, a want to impress Billy.
So he starts with The Hobbit. Eddie “Freak” Munson’s the only other dyslexic Steve knew and he loved that shit. How hard could it be?
The Hobbit is fucking difficult. It starts with a map, Steve thinks is in Elvish and some of the chapters feel like they go on forever. The words still bounce around the page and switch constantly. He likes it though. It’s weirdly fun as a story and he finds himself rooting for Bilbo.
Henderson can never know. That is the one thing Steve is certain of.
Billy doesn’t laugh when Steve tells him that’s what he’d decided to start with. He just rolls his eyes, not meanly and says he used to read that with his mom. Back in Cali. Before Neil fucked everything up.
Billy reads a lot of Oscar Wilde. The Importance of Being Earnest is constantly tucked into his back, dog eared and well loved. Steve knows enough about Oscar Wilde to know what that indicates.
Billy’s a poof. A faggot. A queer.
Billy is like Steve.
He doesn’t have the courage to look out for anything gay. Nothing even that hints at the matter. Steve knows that his dad has The Iliad tucked away in his office. He’s away on business while his mom sits in the kitchen and complains about America. Even after 15 years in the States, she still misses Poland.
His daring heist after she goes to bed leads to him sitting on the kitchen floor, crying about Achilles and Patroclus. Billy’s right, classics are a fucking bummer.
Steves not as stupid as other people think. He knows that if this were a book, him and Billy are hurtling towards deaths door. Even in real life, he’s seen the guys on tv, worn down to the bone on hospital beds.
Gay does not equal a happy ending.
He resolves to never touch The Iliad again.
Billy comes to their next session with a black eye and his mullet chopped off. They don’t talk about it.
1984 is depressing. And surprisingly apt for how Steve feels that his 1984 has gone. He does feel like he’s constantly being watched. Like being in love is illegal. Like saying anything too far against the government will have consequences.
Steve asks if Billy thinks Orwell wrote 1984 about America or Russia. Billy snorts but doesn’t answer.
That’s the note they end on for the year.
Christmas comes and goes. So does New Year. Two months of not seeing Billy aches in his gut.
Then he comes back.
It’s the middle of February. Billy’s been kicked out for a week. Steves playing nursemaid.
He’s beaten up pretty bad. Still, Billy insists he’s had worse.
Steve hedges around asking why it happened. Like the confirmation might suddenly make the full scope of their plight real.
Still, eventually Steve asks. Billy looks at him like he’s particularly simple.
He’s gay. Obviously Steve. And he actually has the balls to go out there, meet men, dance. Even if it does mean getting caught by Neil.
During his explanation, Steve notices they’ve gotten closer together. Like significantly closer.
They’re grazing hands. Electric.
Then Billy moves.
Billy kisses him and Steve’s world turns into a fucking supernova.
They kiss and it doesn’t make Neil vanish in a puff of smoke, it doesn’t make the shopkeepers who sneer at his mother go away, it doesn’t make Steve magically able to read.
But it does make Steve feel like maybe they’ll survive.

Why I believe Reece and Steve (and Inside No.9) are  NOT homophobic  (spoilers)
OK I am just going to look at the accusation that 'Inside No.9 is homophobic. I will address particular concerns and try and look at particular characters in more depth. I hope I can make a good case it is far from homophobic.
Please note I will be discussing characters who are openly LGBT or who are shown to be LGBT. I will not be discussing characters whose sexual orientation is not indicated or discussed. It is actually interesting to note how many characters sexual orientation or marital status is not indicated. This shows how these play little part in the characters motivations and actions.
We should ask 1. are the characters made ridculous because of their sexual orientation 2. punished because of their orientaton. 3.Motivated to do bad things because of their orientation.
Please note many spoilers below
Wholesome LGBT Characters- that survive!
Stevie (Tom and Gerri), Bobby (12 days of Christine), and Robert (Zanzibar) may be somewhat camp but they are all deeply caring and considerate characters - and they all survive
And lets not forget Mark Gatiss got to play Callum, a happily married, professionally successful openly gay man, just as he is himself.(and yes Callum does survive the events of 'Merrily Merrily'). Callum is or was part of the gang just like Laurence and Darren and his sexual orientation is by the by. And the friendship between Callum, Darren and Laurence reflects the even greater frienship and brotherhood between Mark, Steve and Reece.
Martin (The referee's a wxxxer)
There is a gay character who does not die or who kills who does something questionable. Martin in 'The referee's a wxxxer' sets up his lover Calvin to ensure the success of his true love- the football team he supports. But the episode asks questions of the ongoing homophobia in UK league football and the alliegance fans at all levels have to their teams.
Episodes where LGBT characters die
Inside No.9 does not kill off LGBT characters more than heterosexual characters
In 'Sardines' it is implied Stu and Carl may die but this is alongside THREE heterosexual couples
In 'Wuthering Heist' Mario (Dino Kelly) dies in the final shootout but so do several other heterosexual characters.
In 'A Quiet night in' Sabrina is killed by Gerald- and the killing is shown in all its horror. But Gerald is also killed as are Ray and Eddie.
In 'Private view' Patricia (Felicity Kendall) is killed- as are several other characters.
I will come back to Simon Smethurst in 'Simon Says'
Episodes where LGBT characters are killers
Inside No.9 includes many many killers - but only two are (possibly) LGBT.
In 'How do you plead?' Urban is revealed to have killed a classmate as a young teenager. But it is clear he is deeply haunted by this and he actually owns up to it and accepts that he will face serious punishment eventually for this. He is trying to make amends by being a patient and caring person and it could be said that his outwardly camp persona is a way for him to defuse the darker side of his character and turn it into something better (see how he drops this persona when he goes to sort the fuse).
Brian in 'The Last Night of the Proms'joins in the killing of Yusef. But this is shown to be part of his latent xenophobia and of his failure to accept and be open about his true sexual orientation and desires. If he had been more self accepting he probably would not have participated. And part of the point of Brian's story is that Reece and Steve show that remainers are capable of being as racist and intolerant as Brexit supporters.
A few more thoughts on Carl and Stu
I wrote a whole blog about 'Sardines' but just want to say a bit here about Carl and Stu and their relationship. When we met them they are mid argument and it is clear that there are underlying tensions between them about Carl's fear of intimacy, because of the abuse he endured at Andrew's hands. But it is also evident that there is affection and in a moment that was cut from the episode as aired but in the script they reconcile.
The case of Simon Smethurst
In 'Simon Says' Spencer kills Simon during what appear to be an attempt by Simon to seduce him. But this is after Spencer has seen Simon apparently kill Gavin. He could well believe he is about to get violated and possibly killed. (Also worth noting there was a cut scene from earlier in the episode when Spencer considers smothering Simon as he has had enough of his blackmail).
What Simon's actual intentions are in this particular scene are debated by fans. There are signs he may have a romantic/sexual obsession with Spencer but he was performing a script (I may come back to this). But the point is that Spencer doesn't kill him because he may be gay but because he is afraid in that moment for his life.
Personally I could also discuss the portrayal of lesbian characters such as Felicity (The Understudy), June (And the winner is) and Patricia (Private View) - it seems no one cares very much about the L part of LGBT (I say this as someone with many Lesbian friends). But I don't hold this against Reece and Steve (too much!)
And arguably why can't LGBT character be as flawed and complicated as a heterosexual character
The vast majority of killers and indeed victims in the show are heterosexuals or do not have their sexual orientation indicated (like Maxwell, Dennis Fulcher, Viktor).
I previously wrote a blog about 'The Stakeout' which looks at amongst other things whether Varney being a vampire is code for homosexuality.
The Question of 'The Last Weekend'
This particular issue is being raised because of the forthcoming episode 'The Last Weekend' where Steve and Reece play a couple Joe and Chas. I am going to reserve my thoughts on the episode until I have actually seen it and had a chance to think about it.
Perhaps we need to examine our own feelings about what we expect from this episode and why we want the episode to play out a particular way.
Final thoughts
Reece and Steve have many close friendships with members of the LGBT commmunity (not just Mark Gatiss but people like Matt Lucas, Derren Brown and many others). Russell T. Davies has praised the show.
Inside no.9 explores the human condition and human fralities often in quite a profound manner. I am proud to be a fan.

Do you have any media (books, movies, tv shows, artists) that have inspired and and shaped you into the story teller you are today? like do you have any one thing where you were like “oh yes this is it”
Oh that's so cool! Ok, so, I'm being super honest and not givng "cool" answers, these are some of the influences that shaped me.
Movies: Jurassic Park (i know I'm not the only ADHD girl who was memorising what DNA stood for and writing little essays about how high raptors could jump), Trainspotting, Twister, The Dreamers and Sound of my Voice.
TV: Buffy, Hannibal, Newsroom, Girls and Money Heist were all massively influential.
Books: This is really hard for me to choose a few but I didn't go anywhere without my worn copy of Wuthering Heights. Flowers in the Attic had a big impact (what was i doing reading THAT at 8 years old?) and I was obsessed with the Necronomicon by H.P Lovecraft.
For me, the "one thing" was whatever shocked and thrilled me and made me want to replicate it in my own language of expression. I'm naturally drawn to shocking, dark, beautiful things.
The OA might be the single most perfect show I've ever seen. I feel lucky every day to have watched it, even though it was cancelled.
I saw a lot of things I should NEVER have watched as well, including Jaws at age 3 and the movie Jeepers Creepers, which deeply traumatised me to the point of giving me recurring nightmares my entire life since then. In my writing, i will always take something that genuinely terrifies me and make it better, so these are no doubt influencial to a degree though I wish they weren't.
But overall, these are just a very few little things that inspired me. If something made me feel an intense emotion, chances are it inspired me a little.
💜💜💜

Last Gasp, Gadge, Tempting Fate, Death Be Not Proud, The Stakeout, Wuthering Heist, 3 by 3
last gasp: do you have a favourite piece of celebrity memorobilia?
i mean, i don't have any celebrity memorabilia 😅
the trial of elizabeth gadge: why would someone accuse you of being a witch?
i don't know 🤔
tempting fate: if you had three wishes, what are you wishing for?
the last weekend to be redone, where it's about chas & joe going through the motions of grief with joes illness. there's no stupid queerbaiting, no dumb twist, no garbage treatment of a gay character; it's just a beautiful, yet heartwrenching, episode about two people working through a tragedy together
to have the motivation to finish red acorns
for jose to be healthy lol
death be not proud: are there any other steve and reece characters you’d like to see make a comeback?
absolutely ^ ^ not a physical appearance, exactly, but i'd love for them to reference back to their previous characters, like how gerri mentioned ollie 🥰
the stakeout: what are your favourite tropes in any genre?
friends to lovers, LGBT+ adults ( 30+ ) navigating life and love, married couples who're just very cute and lovely together 👌🏼
wuthering heist: which role would you play in a heist movie?
probably the searcher? 👀
3 by 3: what do you think surprises people about you?
that i'm an angry person 🤣

“He quite deserted! we separated!” she exclaimed, with an accent of indignation. “Who is to separate us, pray? They’ll meet the fate of Milo! Not as long as I live, Ellen: for no mortal creature. Every Linton on the face of the earth might melt into nothing before I could consent to forsake Heathcliff. Oh, that’s not what I intend—that’s not what I mean! I shouldn’t be Mrs. Linton were such a price demanded! He’ll be as much to me as he has been all his lifetime. Edgar must shake off his antipathy, and tolerate him, at least. He will, when he learns my true feelings towards him. Nelly, I see now you think me a selfish wretch; but did it never strike you that if Heathcliff and I married, we should be beggars? whereas, if I marry Linton I can aid Heathcliff to rise, and place him out of my brother’s power.”
“With your husband’s money, Miss Catherine?” I asked. “You’ll find him not so pliable as you calculate upon: and, though I’m hardly a judge, I think that’s the worst motive you’ve given yet for being the wife of young Linton.”
“It is not,” retorted she; “it is the best! The others were the satisfaction of my whims: and for Edgar’s sake, too, to satisfy him. This is for the sake of one who comprehends in his person my feelings to Edgar and myself. I cannot express it; but surely you and everybody have a notion that there is or should be an existence of yours beyond you. What were the use of my creation, if I were entirely contained here? My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff’s miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself. If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it. My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I’m well aware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being. So don’t talk of our separation again: it is impracticable; and—”
She paused, and hid her face in the folds of my gown; but I jerked it forcibly away. I was out of patience with her folly!
