What Friends Are For:
Tumblr media
Masterlist | Rules | Peaky Prompts
Trigger Warnings: Light Swearing, FLUFF.
Word Count: 1,022
Characters: Thomas Shelby x Best Friend!Reader (She’s pretty much family to them in this)
Requested: Yes
Requested by: @ta-ka-shi-ma (I apologize if this is a bit short, but I hope you like it!) Request can be found here.
Summary: Y/N shows up at her second home - Shelby Company Limited - to annoy her infamous best friend Tommy, but little does she know, her second home is about to become a bit more permanent.
“What’s this family meeting going to be about Tommy?” Y/N asked, looking at her best friend frustratingly rummaging through papers on his desk. She sat lazily in one of the lavish leather chairs adorning his office.
“You’ll have to be there to find out.” He said, a small smirk on his face as he got up from his desk. Y/N watched as the man who was a few years her senior, strode into the betting room. The employees scattering to their respective desks in the main room as he shut the door behind he and Y/N.
The rest of the family sat in various chairs, the bookies numbers still haphazardly scribbled on the chalkboards as Thomas sat at the head of the table.
“Oi, Y/N. How are ya? Wasn’t expecting you to be here.” Arthur said, moving so she could sit near him.
“She’s practically family, it’s fine Arthur.” Polly said, taking a drag from her cigarette. Their chatter soon stopped once Thomas cleared his throat, making Y/N all the more nervous to find out what this was about.
“So, as some of you know, I’ve been looking into adding more secretaries to our payroll...Because of this, I’ve been combing through resumes. But I have yet to find someone I approve of.” He said flatly, lighting a cigarette.
“Well, I can call around perhaps, maybe meet with some of them down at the pub for informal interviews.” Polly suggested. After a long silence, Tommy looked up from the papers on the table, his hand resting on his chin in thought.
“That won’t be be necessary.” He said. Pausing for a moment and looking out the window.
“Why?” Polly asked.
“Because I think I’ve just found someone.” He said, looking at Y/N.
“What? Tommy...I know we’re friends and all...but why me?” She asked.
“You’re like a sister to me Y/N. You’re one of the only people I can trust and I think you’d be safer here. Besides, I think you’d fit in. You’re already around the shop more than Finn.” He said, earning an eye roll from the youngest Shelby.
“I haven’t had a secretary job before though.” Y/N said, her heart racing at the thought of getting a stable job while also being around her favorite people. They may not be well-liked around town, but they always had a special place in her heart.
“I’ll show you the ropes, love. It’ll be nice to have a familiar face in here.” Polly said with a genuine grin.
“I...I can’t thank you enough.” Y/N said, getting up and giving Tommy a quick hug. He never liked them, especially after the war, but she happened to be the one exception.
“Well uh...when do I start?” She asked, sitting back down.
“Today.” He said, a small smirk graced his features as his friend grinned. He never smiled, but when he did, it was often times around her. He never thought he’d have a friend for as long as he’d had her before. Most of his old ones died in the war or dropped him after he gained status within the Shelby Company. But she managed to stick around, even after he’d gotten back from France, waiting with Polly as he stepped out of the train station, and always urging him to hang out in their neighboring houses on Watery Lane. Even when he felt his world was crumbling, she was still there to hold him together, just as best friends do.
“Is there anything more to this meeting? Or was this just an elaborate job proposal?” Polly asked.
Thomas smirked at her remarks. He was always known to call one-too-many meetings. Even for the slightest issues.
“No Pol. That’s all.” He said, looking at the papers strewn on the table.
Y/N got up, walking over to the board behind him, looking at the odds as she heard everyone depart.
“Now that everyone’s left, what are you paying me?” She asked, looking over her shoulder just in case.
“Well, you’re one of the few people I can stand, so I’ll pay you about a couple bucks more. How’s that?” He said, writing down the number and giving it to her.
She glanced at the amount with wide eyes.
“Holy shit! You don’t have to do that Tom! Why would you?” She said smiling and playfully punching his shoulder.
“Watch your fucking language.” He said, seriously. Y/N’s smile faded for only a moment until she burst out laughing again. It had been the best news in weeks and he knew it. Life back on Watery Lane wasn’t as grand for her, always being in the shadows of the Shelby family’s footsteps.
“You just cursed. That’s not fair.” She said.
“I can curse if I want. I’m older than you...and I’m also your boss.” He said, walking back to the table to grab his case of cigarettes.
“You never answered my question though, Tommy.” She said.
Tommy sighed slightly as he sat back in the chair. His voice a bit more quiet as he spoke, not wanting the family to hear.
“I’m paying you that much because I think you deserve it Y/N. You’ve helped me get through more than you know.” He said, a long silence settled between them as she came to put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Well...I don’t know how to thank you. Truly.” She said.
“How about you meet us all at the pub? That’ll be a great enough thanks don’t you think? You deserve it after all. No friend of mine will be celebrating alone.” He said.
“Alright...But I want to see you drink a whole pint. I’ll challenge Arthur too, you know I will. Just like old times.” She said.
“Deal.” He said, heading towards his office, Y/N following as he led her to her desk. A mischievous smile graced her features as she developed a plan to annoy her friend as much as possible, knowing that for such a smart man, he’d made a terrible choice in having her work near him, a slew of small pranks running through her mind as she started her first day on the job.

Sam and Dean sat at a table in the corner of the diner. They’d arrived to town earlier today and interviewed a few people about the weird deaths throughout the town. The two decided to stop for food and Dean knew this diner had the best burger and pie here. Sam sat across from Dean typing away on his laptop, researching the history of the town. Dean sipped on his milkshake, a mouth full of food, “Have you found anything?”
Sam shook his head, looking at his older brother and giving him a look of disgust, “No. Nothing out of the ordinary. It’s weird, really.”
Dean had already zoned out and was wiping his face, his focus on a certain woman walking through the door. It couldn’t be you. What are the chances that he’d see you again? It’d been 2 years since he’d seen you. Since the day he broke your heart.
You and Dean met years ago while you were at college. He and Sam had been on a hunt and stopped in the bar where you worked at the time. You two had hit it off and you quickly fell for the bad boy. You were close to graduating, only a few months away. Dean left his number and told you to call him when you graduated. So, of course you did. He eventually came clean about what him and Sam did for a living. You weren’t at all scared, intrigued really. So, when he asked you to tag along with him and Sam, you didn’t think twice. You tagged along with the brothers on hunts around the country for 2 years.
However, things took a turn for the worst. You were ready to settle down, ready to stop hunting and get married. You wanted a house and kids and this running around city after city living in motels was not the life you wanted anymore. You knew Dean loved you, he told you every day. But he wasn’t ready for that “apple pie life.” It broke your heart but you gathered your things from that motel and hopped on a bus, never to be seen again.
Dean knew he’d screwed up when he lost you. Sam lectured him for months about it. He’d lost the best thing that had ever happened to him. And here two years later in a small diner in the middle of this small town, you walk in. As if the universe is giving him a second chance.
After you two broke up, he tried to contact you, but you’d changed your number and he wasn’t able to find you again. He gave up trying after 6 months of searching where you could have gone.
His face falls when he sees the man trailing behind you, his arm going around your waist to lead you to a table. He knows you’re not his anymore, but seeing another man’s hand on you makes his blood boil. He glares a little when he sits across from you. If he really knew you, he’d know you liked to sit on the same side of the booth. At least that’s the way it was with him.
“Dean? Are you even listening?” Sam asks, snapping his fingers.
Deans eyes are pulled away from you and looks at his little brother, “Yeah, Sammy I’m listening.” He takes a bite of his fry as Sam looks at Dean skeptically.
“Who are you-” Sam turns around to look at the diner, seeing who had his brother’s attention, when he hears a familiar laugh. He narrows his eyes at the woman, seeing if it’s who he thinks it is. “Holy shit.”
“She’s with another guy.” Dean mumbles, sipping his milkshake, jealousy boiling inside him. That should be him sitting with you. He should have never let you go. And now here you are with another man right in front of him.
“Well, Dean, it has been 2 years. You had to know she’d move on by now.” He says, popping a fry into his mouth.
“I’m going to go talk to her.” Dean says, starting to slide out of the booth, Sam quickly stops him.
“Dean, it looks like she’s on a date. Come on dude, don’t bother her.” Dean shakes his brother arm off.
“I’m just going to say hi.” Dean smirks a little before walking your way. Sam groans before getting his things together and dropping cash on the table for the bill.
“Well, I’ll be damned.”
You internally cuss. You’d recognize that raspy voice anywhere. You look up at him, nothing about hims changed. Except that he’s maybe gotten sexier. of course he did. He’s still got the piercing green eyes that you fell in love with. That you’re still in love with. “Dean Winchester.”
He gives you a smirk, “In the flesh.”
You glance at your date, “Gavin, this is Dean... an old friend.”
“Oh baby, i think we were more than friends.” He chuckles, looking at Gavin, “If you know what I mean.” He gives him a wink. You blush at his comment.
Gavin clears his throat and offers his hand to shake, “Gavin. Nice to meet you Dean.”
Dean glances at his hand before taking it, “Yeah you too.”
Sam walks up behind Dean, and you smile, “Sam.” You can’t help but stand and hug him. Even though it ended ugly between you and Dean, you’d kept in touch with Sam.
“Hey, y/n” He gives you a little squeeze. Dean narrows his eyes at Sam and then at you, “I didn’t get a hug.”
You step back from Sam and roll your eyes before giving in and giving Dean a hug. The smell bringing back old feelings and memories you thought you had put away.
“He’s not good enough for you.” He whispers in your hair. You pull away and he gives a small smile and then looks at Gavin, “Sammy and I better get going. You two have a good night.”
Sam gives a small wave goodbye before following his brother out the door to the impala.
“I’ll be right back.” You tell Gavin before following the brothers out the door. You head to the driver’s side of the impala and lean in the window, “I’m working at the bar down the road tonight. Come by for a round of drinks. On me?” You look between the brothers.
“You know I can’t turn down a free drink.” Dean says, starting up the impala.
You nod, “I know. By the way, he’s gay.” You tap your hands on the window, solely looking at Dean, you give him a smirk before pulling away from the window and walking back inside.
Dean watches you sway your hips as you walk back inside, relieved that you weren’t on a date. Maybe he can get a second chance.

How quietly we endure - Kim Hee Sung x Gu Dong Mae ff
The first time Hee Sung thought about running away, he was with his grandfather. He’d been 7. His parents had tried for years to have a second child but for all the praying and bowing his mother did, it seemed no one in heaven was listening. What little money his father managed to earn from his tenants, he pissed away on extravagant dinners and bribes. And so, with an unreliable son, his grandfather set his sights on grooming Hee Sung as his immediate heir.
Once a happy and charming child, Hee Sung learned quickly those days were over. His wild western storybooks were replaced with endless scripts of Confucian analects. His colorful baji pants, perfect for jumping and running, were traded for stiff hanboks and suits in as many shades of blue and brown as his grandfather had in servants. His school friends were all deemed unworthy of the Kim family legacy and so he spent the rest of the year sitting alone before his parents pulled him out for private tutoring.
It was on the train to Jemulpo, one of their yearly trips to pray for good fortune in the upcoming lunar new year, that he looked out the window and saw the expanse of wheat fields, gray mountains jutting out in the distance. Suddenly he wished he could run, to make a break for those rocky cliffs. To be anywhere but here. Hee Sung couldn’t explain it. But he thought that if he didn’t run now, he would never get the chance again. One look from his grandfather quashed that little rebellion.
Years later, he finally made a break for it. He was 11. His mother had taken him with her on one of her shopping trips. They were walking along one of the busier paths in the market place when he glanced behind him and saw the caravans trailing after them. Three caravans loaded with silks, parchment, and dried fruit and corvina. Once again, he had the feeling that he needed to run or it would be too late. So he bolted.
He heard his mother call out his name and curiously, a soft tick tick going off in the background. Turning a corner, he made for the large crowd in the main square. Several people scurried out of his way as he ran through the large stone gates. Hee Sung didn’t stop till he reached the edge of the forest. There, he paused briefly to catch his breath before seeking cover.
Hunger hit him suddenly and he searched his pockets in vain. The weight of what he’d done fell on him now. Fear made him consider running back and trying again another day but then a dark, bloody hand reached across him and pressed a sharp stick to his throat.
Don’t. Move., a young voice growled.
It took all of Hee Sung’s frayed nerves to stay where he was. His legs shook as the stranger searched through his hanbok. Where’s your money?
Hee Sung gulped. I don’t have any.
The stranger scoffed. What kind of nobleman doesn’t carry around any money?
The kind..., Hee Sung choked back his tears. The kind that’s running away.
A frustrated snarl sounded behind him and a push sent Hee Sung face down into the hard dirt. Dimly, he heard the boy mutter, Useless fool, before stomping away.
Hee Sung struggled to his feet and ran after the boy. Wait. Please. Wait for me.
The boy only walked faster and Hee Sung had to pull at his hanbok to try and keep up. Wait. Please. Do you have food? Can I come with you?
If I had food, do you think I would have bothered to rob you?
You’re right. I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking. How about we go get some food together? I’m Kim H-
I don’t care.
Alright. That’s fine, chingu - can I call you chingu?
Silence.
Listen. Chingu. I think we can help each other. You’ve clearly got the brawn. I’ll be the brain and together we can- . Legs giving out, Hee Sung fell into the dirt again. His hands helped to break the fall but it still gave his body another shock. He was clutching his side when a hand appeared in front of his face and pulled him up by the lapels of his outer jacket.
He followed the boy for nearly an hour. Hee Sung couldn’t be sure but he thought perhaps his new friend was leading him in circles. They were on the outskirts of a small village when he was pushed into the bushes and told to wait quietly. Ten minutes passed in absolute panic for him. But when a familiar, dark, glowering face showed up in front of him holding out a rotten apple and a handful of raw barley, Hee Sung nearly cried in joy.
When night fell, they settled into an abandoned shaman’s hut. The air was still warm when the two boys drifted off into an uneasy sleep. But as the cold air seeped through the flimsy straw walls, they huddled closer together. Hee Sung woke several times throughout the night, startled by the chirping and rustling of nature. The only comfort he had was in the solid, steady breathing of his companion.
He was kicked awake in the morning. A quick look around told him his friend was long gone and the bright light peeking through the open door made him think it was nearly midday. An ugly face peered at him now, angry at first, then quizzical. Muscles tensed, Hee Sung raised his arms as if to fight his way out.
Then the ugly man spoke, Are you...Kim Hee Sung-shi? The young lord?
Hee Sung couldn’t breathe. But the man seemed to recognize him because a sour looking smile split the man’s face into hard lines. I’m glad I found you, young lord. Your grandfather’s been very worried.
Dimly, he sensed himself nodding. The fight flooded out his little frame. He hadn’t run far enough. Standing now, he absentmindedly brushed the dirt and grime from his jacket and walked himself outside. The man was saying something, excitedly. But Hee Sung stopped listening. The ticking was back again, clearer now.
Tick, tick, tick, t-

“Listen, Brat!” Levi X Reader
Pairing: Levi X Reader
Words: 1847
Genre: Action, fluff(?)
Tumblr media
He was the very first one to ever call me a brat! Can you believe his nerve? But I need to learn to ignore him. There is no way I’d quit or let him kick me out – not after what happened.
“No! You can’t just have me marry some stranger!” I yelled, my temper spiraling out of control.
And just like me, my father’s face was contorted in his rage. “I am the father – the head of the family! You’d do well to listen to me, (Y/N)! I never should have let you play with swords.”
“Really?” I remembered that he was the one who taught me how to fight in the first place. Father changed.
“Just do as I say, (Y/N). It is a good match with Alexis. You will be set for life! You won’t need for anything like those peasants in the outer districts.”
“Oh yeah? Well, I’d rather be one of those peasants in the outer districts than get married to that Alexis. You know what, father? I’d take it even farther than the outer district! I’d go outside these damn walls! I’d rather be a Survey Corps soldier and get eaten by a Titan than stay here!”
Out of spite, I walked away and never came back. True to my word, I enlisted in the military. After three years of training, I graduated the top of my batch. After which, I entered the Survey Corps. It was just after the wall Maria reclamation program, too. Meaning there are a lot of vacancies.
And as luck would have it, I got assigned to the so – called Special Operations Squad. It’s a brand new squad, with a brand new leader.
“Tsk. You’re the newbie?” Said this man, called Levi. That’s captain Levi for me, though. He’s my squad leader, and this squad functions differently than the other ones. How? I’m not quite sure yet – honestly, I don’t really know what this special operations is.
“Yes, sir.” I saluted. “(L/N) (Y/N), sir!” to my surprise, he handed me a broom. An effing broom? Before I could stop myself, I lost my composure as a soldier and asked, “what’s this?”
Levi glared at me. He looked so offended right now, but I am too! Why the hell is he handling me a broom?
“Listen here, brat.” I can’t help but notice lingered on the word brat. “Every member of my squad need to learn how to clean up their mess before anything else.”
He stepped closer, leaning down a bit so his eyes are directly looking at mine. “Are we clear, brat.”
“Yes.” Despite my lack of respect, he deemed it good enough and left me with the broom.
“The heck am I going to do with this?” I looked around the room, and it was already clean! Ugh! Maybe the special operations is cleaning up what’s already clean! I sighed. I might as well as just sweep around.
“I can’t believe it! Three years of training all for this?” But I got no other choice now, do I? It’s either this or go back home.
Fifteen minutes into it, though, I actually got very immersed. Checking every nook and cranny of the room, so as the shelves and windows. But that doesn’t mean my mouth was shut the whole time.
“I can’t believe – ugh!” I lifted a set of books once I was done wiping down the shelf, “why do we even need books!”
“Do you just whine all day?”
“Shi –!” I whipped my head back, and lo and behold, my captain was back, with a teacup in hand.
“No. Sometimes I just punch walls.” Then I turned back to sorting.
“You can’t help being a brat, can you?”
“Excuse me?!” With my fists clenched, I dropped the books and walked over to where he’s sitting. He just sighed – an exhausted sigh.
“Let me guess, brat,” – the way he lingered on brat is so annoying! – “you’re running away from something.”
I froze. That was spot on. I was careful – no one knows anything. So, how?
“You came to the wrong place. One wrong move out there, and you’re dead. No matter how good you were during training, the real thing is something else. Especially since you think that all there is to a soldier is his sword.”
He left the room again after that, leaving me to my thoughts.
***
A month after that, I went on my first ever expedition.
“Listen, brat!” Levi said. “The moment we step outside this gate, Titans are going to surround us. Be ready for hell.”
At a loss for words, I nodded. It was hell, alright.
It was the first time I ever saw a Titan. They’re ugly, macabre creatures. Creatures that shouldn’t exist even in nightmares. Despite the initial shock, though, my training kicked in immediately. I went after every Titan I saw – finally having the outlet for all my pent-up frustrations.
1 … 2 … 3 … One by one they fell. I’m getting the hang of it.
“Captain! Two more incoming, a 10 – meter class from the left and a 6 – meter class from the right!” Eld barked.
“Brat, Olou, come with me. We’ll take on the 10 – meter. The rest of you go after the 6 – meter!”
“Yes, sir!”
We all went zipping to our assigned tasks, and as quick as lightning we were upon the 10 – meter class. It was just standing there, not even reacting to us. The captain signaled for me and Olou to do the routine – cut out sight, then the limbs. But that’ll waste our time. It’s literally just standing there!
I shook my head and went it for the nape. “Easy kill.” I smirked. Of course, it was easy. It was like a dead tree.
“No, (Y/N)!” Levi yelled. Too late.
I was almost there when the Titan suddenly turned! It’s head – no, it’s mouth! – was rushing towards me. Rather I was rushing towards it. Just when I thought I was gonna die, an arm wrapped around my stomach and pulled me away.
Black hair was almost all I could see, and a faint smell of antiseptic. I looked back at the Titan and it was already evaporating. Did Olou go in for the kill? Or was it Levi?
Dropping me uncourteously on the ground, Levi leaned down so we met at eye level.
“I told you before, brat. One wrong move and you’re dead. Recklessness is stupidity! And being stupid means you’ll die first!”
He’s right. He was right.
“I’m … so – rry.” It was hard to get my voice to work again after all that, especially the part of me admitting I was wrong.
“Get up. Just … learn to listen.” And then he walked away.
***
We reunited with the rest of the army later that day, and began setting up camp in an abandoned village. The local Garrison Hq here wasn’t big enough for all of us, so it was only the commander’s squad and the special operations squad who could stay.
Despite the fact that Titans can’t function at night and knowing full well we are actually safe, I couldn’t sleep. Being at death’s doorstep make you … realize things. Captain Levi was right. I do need to listen. It was my recklessness that almost got me killed.
Finally giving up on trying to sleep, I decided to walk around. I found a rag, somehow and started cleaning the old dining area. Five months’ worth of dust was waiting for me, but I couldn’t care less. I need something to do.
“Can’t sleep?”
“Ah!” I wasn’t alone. Captain Levi was here. Why? Instead of answering that I just nodded.
“I see you finally stopped your whining.” Despite that being incredibly annoying, I actually smiled. Well, at least I think it should have annoyed me yet I feel nothing.
“Was I that loud every time I clean?”
“Yes. I was tempted only too many times to kick you out my squad. I have no need for a brat like you.” He said, looking me straight in the eye.
“Why didn’t you, then? Kicked me out?”
At that, though, he looked away. And silence passed that I thought he was never gonna answer but he did.
“Because you’re actually good at cleaning.” He said whilst looking at the wall, you’d think he was talking to it. In spite of the subtle insult there, I can’t help but smile and feel the tiniest bit of pride at my work. Okay, not the tiniest. Captain Levi is the master of being clean, and having him praise my work is some kind of an achievement.
“Thank you.” I said, before we both settled back into our silence.
***
“(Y/N), back me up!” Eld called. We were facing a 7-meter Titan. It was an abnormal, too.  When he called me to back him up, that meant I should be in sync with him in disabling the Titan. We sped up to cut off its eyes when the damn Titan jumped out of the way. Good thing me and Eld didn’t slit each other’s throat when we almost collided.
We quickly recovered, and one look between us conveyed our next move. A faint, a smoke screen and then bam! I went in for the nape!
“Finally!” I yelled, victoriously. “Area cleared!” I yelled out to my squad mates. We all then gathered around captain Levi.
“Good job, Eld!” Gunther said as he clapped Eld on the back.
“Thank you. But (Y/N) did a great job, too. After all, she dealt the killing blow.”
“Whoa! That’s your fifth kill, (Y/N). And it’s only your first expedition.” Petra mused.
“That’s noth – “I tried to shrug it off, but Olou cut me off. That ass.
“That’s nothing. Five kills aren’t that amazing.” Olou said haughtily, even crossing his arms for full effect.
“Funny you should say that, Olou.” Eld said before he and Gunther burst into laughter. Once he was calm enough, he continued, “(Y/N), on this pig’s first expedition you know what happened? He peed his pants!”
“Oh my goodness! Really?” That was probably the grossest thing I have ever heard. And to think I just saw people get eaten.
“Tsk. He reeked so bad, too.” Levi added, a look of disgust on his face. “Picnic’s over. We’re heading to the left plank.”
          “Yes, sir!”
We all moved towards our horses, however Levi held me back.
          “Hey brat!”
“Still?” I thought we bonded last night. Well, maybe that was only me.
He sighed, as of what he was about to say is something so difficult and would contradict his principles. “You did great, (Y/N). You actually listened.”
“Hey! You called me by my name for the first time!” I was wrong. This felt better than being praised for my cleaning skills. I was so cheered up that I was actually skipping!
“Idiot, I’ve called you by your name before. You just didn’t listen.”
“Well, sorry! Promise I’ll listen better from now on.”
To my great surprise, he actually smiled at that.
