His sophomore book, Brighter Than the Sun, releases today and I’m happy to join in the celebration with my stop on the book tour. Brighter Than the Sun is a YA contemporary novel set both in Tijuana, Mexico and over the U.S. border in San Diego. Soledad - she prefers Sol - is the only member of her family with a U.S. passport. Every day she wakes at 5:00 am and commutes across the border from Tijuana to attend school in the suburb of Chula Vista. The daily commute is tiring and the border checks are stressful, but Sol values her evenings and weekends with her family. That all changes when Sol takes on a job in San Diego to feed her family. Sol and her family struggle to navigate a very dire financial situation, but their story is not all bleak. Aleman balances Sol’s struggles with new opportunities and hope. I think 13 and 14-year-olds are the target audience for this book. The story is told in such a gentle way, that despite some underage drinking and teen romance, it could even be shared with middle grade students. Soledad is a well-developed multi-dimensional character. She works hard, but also takes advantage of her new social opportunities. She resents being the sole provider for her family, yet wants to do more for them. She acts as a maternal stand-in for her younger brother, but also aches to be mothered herself. She is often quiet, but uses her voice when it matters most. Immigration and border laws are hot topics. Books like Brighter Than the Sun, which depict Mexican characters with respect and empathy instead of the threatening caricatures used in political debate, provide a positive resource for educating students about Mexican immigration. Tori as a narrator is super interesting, and I think Alice did a fantastic job at portraying a character who is suffering from undiagnosed depression and doesn’t really understand what the problem is for the majority of the book. Definitely worth checking out if you’ve read/watched Heartstopper and want to explore more of the other characters!

TW: references to suicide and suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, self-harm, depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, brief incidents of homophobia, and unchallenged misogyny and ableism.

🌵 Places We've Never Been 🌵

I have read almost every @kasiewest books except for a few, which I plan to read. She is by far one of my favorite authors and is bascislly an auto-buy author for me.

When I saw this book in stock at work, I HAD to grab it. I have been (kind of) patiently waiting for this book since it was first announced. And now I can finally read it!

I'm already one chapter in and I'm so in love with the vibe. I can tell this will be another great book that I will easily be able to read in a day or two. Usually, I'd say "I don't meet the height requirements to ride your emotional roller coaster," but when it comes to Kasie West...bring on the roller coaster! (I know, that was cheesy, but I saw an opportunity and had to snatch it.)

It feels like the old days! Hello pretty people, how are you? I hope very well, today is Wednesday and I bring yet another review. I read this book a few months ago and I was very surprised.

In “A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow” by Laura Taylor Namey we follow Lila Reyes, a girl from Miami with her whole life planned. But when three things happen, her best friend and her boyfriend leave her and the worst, her abuelita passes away, everything changes and she has to face her new reality.

Her parents are worried about her so they send her for a few months with her aunt to London, Winchester. Depressed and without her family panadería "La Paloma", Lila has to find a new home outside her home. And that's when she meets Orion, a boy with a passion for tea. He decides to be her tour guide and help her feel better.

This book really surprised me, I read it in the middle of a pandemic and to be able to see Winchester through Lila and the passion of Orion for his hometown was beautiful.

Equally I loved the exploration of loss and grief. The figure of the abuelita in the Latinx culture is extremely important and seeing how much it hurried Lila was so real.

Also seeing Lila's passion for Cuban reposteria was extremely admirable, seeing how she always struggled to improve and how food brings people together (also something very Latinx).

If you want something light, with a lot of heart, many feelings, Cuban pastelitos and tea, this is your book.
