No one loves Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman more than America’s elite. In recent years, we’ve seen leaders, investors, and celebrities hold out a Saudi exception to human rights in the service of a blurry concept of national interests that requires the U.S. to constantly compromise its values in service of an autocrat. And so MBS has been welcomed back into the establishment fold, and he won over Washington. And now he’s taking a victory lap.

When Saudi Arabia convened a 2018 summit in Riyadh, businesspeople shielded their name tags from view, sheepish about seeking MBS’s money just days after journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder. But the stigma has apparently worn off, and big names in finance, tech, media, and entertainment showed up at the Miami edition of Davos in the Desert.

The entire conceit of the conference is that Saudi Arabia can be abstracted from MBS, who is hardly ever mentioned yet remains the unspoken force behind the events. The host, the Future Investment Initiative Institute, a mouthful, is essentially the crown prince’s personal think tank. Session after session offered platitudes and ruminations on the least controversial ideas ever—AI is going to change the world! Climate is important! Sports bring people together! The two-day gathering was titled “On the Edge of a New Frontier,” itself a sort of redundant name. (Isn’t a frontier an edge?)

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of a major sovereign wealth fund that’s currently under Senate investigation, led the proceedings. The Public Investment Fund that Al-Rumayyan runs is the conference’s founding partner and powers its lavish events. That Al-Rumayyan has $70 billion in annual investments to dole out is enough to draw out financial titans, curious entrepreneurs, and former Trump officials.

Jared Kushner, who had grown a beard, was talking about his theory of investing, without noting that MBS’s sovereign wealth funds had reportedly contributed $2 billion to his Affinity Partners. Steve Mnuchin, who similarly snared $1 billion of Saudi funds for his Liberty Strategic Capital, wore a suit and dress sneakers and talked about Israel as a tech hub. Mike Pompeo, in a tie, said that U.S. leadership in the world requires a “stability model” that involves working with “like-minded nations,” though “they’re not all going to be democracies.” Little wonder he rushed U.S. arms to Saudi Arabia as secretary of state as part of an end run around Congress.

Doing business with Saudi Arabia has become so normalized that the CEOs of major corporations and investment firms showed up in droves. There was Accenture’s Julie Sweet, Blackstone’s Stephen Schwarzman, and Thiel Capital’s Jack Selby. David Rubenstein—the billionaire who has played host to President Joe Biden at his Nantucket estate—spoke alongside his daughter Gabrielle. (This year, the Biden administration didn’t send an emissary, but the deputy commerce secretary, Donald Graves, attended in 2021.)

Journalists have kept a distance from Saudi Arabia after the dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Khashoggi, but in Miami the moderators included CNN’s Bianna Golodryga, Fox’s Maria Bartiromo, Bloomberg’s Manus Cranny, and The Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker.

MBS has especially used boldfaced names to rehabilitate his standing post-Khashoggi, his crackdown on women activists, and the destructive Yemen war. In Miami, there was a fireside chat with failed Senate candidate Dr. Oz. “Saudi Arabia is, I think, doing some wise investing and shifting mindsets by trying to leapfrog, in some cases, where the West is,” Oz said.

For Gwyneth Paltrow, it was just another fun public event. She spoke about how Goop had “built meaning” for its fans, in conversation with entrepreneur Moj Mahdara, a former adviser to Hillary Clinton. It was particularly incongruous when Paltrow discussed bringing more women to the cap table to fight the patriarchy.

Rob Lowe had some advice for Riyadh’s efforts to break into Hollywood and create its own film industry. “My view is there’s no reason that Saudi shouldn’t be the leader in IP in the same way they’re attempting to be the leader in sports and everything else,” Lowe said. “You need to have someone who can communicate: Why Saudi, why now.”

For all of the glitzy stage management and slick social media branding, at many moments there were fewer than 50 people watching the livestream on YouTube. But what mattered more were the opinion leaders, financiers, and tycoons in the room.

Big Tech was there, too, with Google’s Caroline Yap and Dell’s Michael Dell. Nothing was quite as obsequious as last year’s gathering in Miami when Adam Neumann, Marc Andreessen, and Ben Horowitz—all beneficiaries of Saudi Arabia’s financial largesse—gushed about how MBS is like a “founder,” except “you call him, ‘His Royal Highness.’”

Liberal MP Yasir Naqvi has stepped down from his role as a parliamentary secretary in order to possibly run for leadership of the provincial Liberals.

Naqvi will continue to hold his Ottawa Centre seat but will no longer act as the parliamentary secretary for both the president of the King's Privy Council for Canada and the minister of emergency preparedness.

His office confirmed in a written statement that Naqvi is taking the step as he "explores the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party."

Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair wished Naqvi well in a tweet, saying the pair had "worked to strengthen emergency management in Canada." [...]

Ottawa Centre MP Yasir Naqvi has officially entered the race to lead the Ontario Liberal Party.

Liberal Party spokesperson Carter Brownlee confirmed to CBC that Naqvi submitted his paperwork on Friday. A Naqvi campaign spokesman later confirmed that the campaign will formally launch on Saturday. He has scheduled appearances in Ottawa that morning, and in Mississauga in the afternoon.

He joins Beaches—East York MP Nathaniel Erskine Smith and Kingston and the Islands MPP Ted Hsu as an officially declared candidate in the leadership race, which will be decided in a vote by party members in November.

Naqvi was first elected to Parliament in the 2021 federal election, replacing Catherine McKenna as the MP for Ottawa Centre. He previously served three terms as the MPP for Ottawa Centre, and held several cabinet posts in Kathleen Wynne's government, including as attorney general. [...]

It was seeing my mutuals do the 🚼 fankid ask meme that finally got me around to finishing this

I’ve written & rewritten so many different replies to this post, but I couldn’t figure out how to respond so I think I’m going to stop planning things out & just let it all flow

First things first, HAVSSBSB holyshit thankyou for the ask. I don’t mind at all because now I have an excuse to mention them

ALSO DW about being late with this. Caus I mean.. better late than never?? Idk do people still even say that?

Ever since this one line Dan says in the English dub about having seven kids, I’ve decided that it would be really really funny if I just… gave him that

BUT. The issue is that designing seven fankids & giving them their own unique personalities is h a rd

The only one I have decently figured out is the oldest son, Yasir, and that’s okay because I cherish him even though I haven’t decided on a design I’m content with yet but shhhhhhhh

(Quick heads-up: a lot of developing fankids stuff happened when me & a friend were obsessing over this restaurant AU. So a lot of details are centered around that)

Idk where to start if I’m being completely honest. I have several ideas for a “backstory” I guess?? But I don’t really want to say anything unless I’m definitive about it

He’s pretty dense but not dense enough to be incompetent. Yasir has excellent antenna and knows when a circumstance is unfavorable for him, but is too rash and impulsive on top of whatever desperation he’s in to do much without exasperating the issue

You could probably argue that all of Dan’s kids ended up somewhat materialistic, but at least for Yasir, it’s not for reasons having to do with greed or splendor. His preoccupation has to do with bouts of worrying on never having enough regardless of how comfortably he’s living & the doubt of somehow turning up short of something despite clearly owning the necessary funds

He’s incredibly suspicious of other Stand Users, and tries his best to not affiliate with them; obviously, this never winds up being the case with the natural attraction

His siblings are something he adores, but constantly will his attempts to be what he views as a responsible older brother end with him patronizing & babying them. It’s well-meaning, but how he insists on doing things for their safety comes off as infantilizing

This added onto his continual keeping other Stand Users away from them…

I love the himb, he’s son boyo. He will cut the crust off of your sandwich and you will thank him

👑Background👑

Iman is a princess of one of the cadet branches of the royal family of Scalding Sands, her late grandfather is younger brother to the current sultan. Her father is also the sultan’s only nephew and with that position comes strong political influence and fantastic wealth. Though she’s not directly in line for the throne, she is well aware of her royal blood and does not let anyone else around her forget it.

She has grown up in a world of glittering jewels, luxurious vacations and grand parties and has wanted for very little in her life. She is also adored by her family with the exception of her older brother, who regards all of his younger siblings as beneath him since he is the sole heir and future head of their branch of the royal family. He is extremely arrogant and when they were younger, he would taunt Iman in various ways, including setting his pet tiger on her. These incidents resulted in Iman having a lifelong fear and hatred of cats and actually caused her to discover her UM at a young age while trying to hide from the tiger. And as she’s aged, Iman developed a sharp wit and an even sharper tongue to combat his bullying to the point he’s stopped for the most part. On the other hand, Iman treats her younger siblings very well and loves them very much.

Because of her family’s wealth and position, they move in the same social criceles as Kalim’s. Iman and Kalim are actually distantly related by marriage and were childhood friends. She also grew up knowing Jamil and though she is fond of both of them, she has always been more partial towards Jamil, seeing him as the more clever and interesting of the two even as children. Growing up, Iman was fascinated by the stories of the Sorcerer of Sands and while she has her heart set on marrying a prince or a man of wealth, she puts high importance on intellect and cunning. And as one of the few magic users in her family, she would also prefer to marry a fellow magic user as well.

Outside of Kalim and Jamil (and occasionally his sister), Iman has spent most of her life around her family and hasn’t really had the opportunity to make other friends. She has been mostly homeschooled and only went on to attend NRC after a personal plea to her family. This was because a few months before the beginning of the school year, Iman attended an equestrian tournament with her family. Vidaria was competing and after the competition, they were introduced to each other. They hit it off right away and Iman decided she wanted to attend the same school as her new friend. And the fact that Jamil was attending NRC too was just an added bonus.

👑Appearance👑

Iman is a stylish young woman who glows with the radiance of one well pleased with herself. She has bright golden eyes and sleek black hair that goes past her hips. On her face are two beauty marks, one visible right by her lip and another on the far side of her face by her left ear. Most of her hair hangs free behind her back but some of it it is tied back in a half crown braid, secured with a golden hair clip in the shape of a lotus. Unless wearing ceremonial robes, her nails are always painted red. She often wears an elaborate pair of amethyst earrings with a matching gold bangle, with several more bangles and a matching necklace when wearing her dorm uniform.

She wears her school uniform with no blazer and one trademark of hers is how she wears her Scarabia armband as bracelet, tied in a bow on her wrist, as opposed to wearing it around her arm. She also wears high black lace up boots with her school uniform that go past her knees and add 10CM to her height.

👑Personality👑

Iman has the very imperious personality of someone who has always gotten their way in everything. She’s extremely spoiled and has rarely ever heard the word “no” in her life. So when things aren’t to her liking, she doesn’t take it well at all. Due to her upbringing, Iman has not interacted with many “ordinary” people besides Jamil and occasionally his sister and has little interest in the world outside of her circle of luxury. So she doesn’t have the best opinion on those who are not royal, noble, or wealthy.

Most of Iman’s opinions have been influenced by her family and the stories she’s read about the Sorcerer of Sands. And when she was younger, she traveled to Shaftlands with her family and had her purse pickpocketed, which only worsened her opinion of poor people and mistrust of them. School life has forced her to interact with more people outside her social circle and while her worldview has opened up some, she still looks down on people whom she considers beneath her, which incidentally includes almost everyone at NRC. If someone fails to show her proper deference, that person quickly ends up on her shitlist. As a result, Iman still spends most of her time with Kalim and Jamil, as well as other students of wealth and status, with a few exceptions.

She is also incredibly vain and considers herself the most attractive student in Scarabia and even argues that there are few at NRC that could match her beauty. She spends a great deal of time on her appearance, especially her hair. Her haircare alone takes a few hours and she will often skip classes on days when she plans to wash and set it. And outside of dancing and riding, Iman hates most physical activity because of the damage it can do to her appearance.

However, Iman does have her moments of nobility, especially in regards to her friendship with Vidaria. True, her initial interest in her was that she’s a royal fae with a mutual love for horses. But Iman makes a point of being a good friend to Vidaria and truly cares for her. Iman understands that she is Vidaria’s window to the world outside Briar Valley and has more or less taken her under her wing. Her family has some political interest in her friendship with Briar Valley’s future queen, but Iman has no ulterior motives of her own. And many of her moments of genuine kindness have been related to helping Vidaria when she’s having panic attacks and the like.

Also, interestingly enough, Iman is very good with children, well behaved ones at least. Her interactions with children is the one instance in her life where Iman will disregard class barriers and she treats any child she comes across with kindness and respect. She especially has a soft spot for little girls because she herself longed for a sister growing up to be her playmate since all she had was her jerk older brother. Her own younger siblings (all of them under the age of 12) also look up to he and she goes out of her way to be a good older sister to them.

👑Unique Magic👑

Iman’s unique magic is called Desert Mirage and allows her to temporarily become invisible while creating an illusionary double (or mirage) of herself. When she splits herself in two, only the double is visible. Whatever she is doing before triggering her UM is what the mirage will do. For example, if she’s being chased, she activates her UM so the person chasing her unknowingly goes after her mirage so she can go in an opposite direction. And if someone touches it, the mirage dissolves into sand.

👑Other Skills/Talents👑

👑 Dancing ~ Iman is a very talented dancer and has taken classes beside Jamil and Kalim. She loves being on stage and showing off her skills at parties.

👑 Equestrian Arts ~ Iman is truly a horse girl at heart and has spent her entire life around them. When she is out riding with her club members, one of her favorite things to do is race ahead with Vidaria, leaving behind Riddle, Silver and Sebek.

👑 Foreign Language ~ Iman also has a proficiency for forigen languages and speaks several fluently. She and Vidaria often switch to a fae language they both understand when they want to gossip secretively. And when the Black Swans become an established school club, she convinces Danica to let their second release be a remix of a popular old love song from her country.

👑Trivia/Lore👑

Iman’s love for horses began when she was gifted a pony for her third birthday.

Her favorite color is deep purple and her favorite gemstones are amethysts.

She has a thing for collecting vintage designer bags, something she picked up from her grandmother.

Peacocks are Iman’s favorite bird and she keeps several as pets in her family’s menagerie. One of them is named after her Disney counterpart.

During the Ghost Bride crisis, Iman was enraged when Idia refused her help by pretending she was his bride, saying that he should consider it an honor since she’s “an obvious 10 to his 2”.

Her secret wish is to travel all of Twisted Wonderland with Vidaria by her side.

👑In-Canon Adventures👑

Prologue ~ Iman spent most of orientation chatting with Vidaria before she left the ceremony early to look for Malleus. So Iman was there when Yuulan and Grim came barging in and she was NOT impressed with how Grim set the mirror chamber on fire, especially when her hair almost got caught in the flames. She later retired to her room early to text Vidaria bout what happened, but not before showing her face at the Scarabia welcome party for about an hour where she spent most of the time pointing out Taima’s bad manners, as she felt them to be.

Book 1 ~ Iman had no idea what was happening at Hearslabyul as the only person in that dorm she’s really close to is Cater. And he didn’t tell her much except that Riddle was in a fouler mood than usual and it was really stressing his dorm mates out.

Book 2 ~ Iman reluctantly agreed to fill in for one of the injured spelldrive players in her dorm. Unfortunately, Scarabia went up against Diasomnia first so their defeat was inevitable. During the match, Iman and Taima argued a lot about their game strategy and she did NOT appreciate having to take orders from an “uppity freshman brat” like Taima.

Book 3 ~ Iman already knew better not to get involved with Azul and studied hard, barely passing her exams. Vidaria helped her with some of them.

Book 4 ~ Unfortunately, as a Scarabia student, Iman was forced to stay in her dorm over the first part of winter break. But before Jamil placed his plans in action, he actually gave Iman the option to leave but she refused for her own personal reasons. For more about Iman’s Book 4 adventures, read here.

Book 5 ~ Iman auditions for Danica’s VDC team and also convinces Vidaria to audition as well. Both are accepted but find their personalities clash with the other members of their team. For more about Iman’s Book 5 adventures, read here.

Book 6 ~ Iman goes through the most development in Book 6. When Jamil is taken by the charrons, she helped Kalim maintain order in Scarabia and even began to set aside her differences with Taima. She also had a lot of time to think about the events of books 5 and 4, especially the latter. For more about her Book 6 adventures, read here.

👑Relationships As of Book 5👑

A ~ Ace really does not appreciate Iman’s conceited attitude and Iman in turn feels that Ace is particularly disrespectful. During Book 5, she takes particular issue with how Ace teases Ione about her poor dance skills and even defends her a few times. She’s slightly more tolerable of Duce, though.

B ~ Despite thinking him a clout chaser, Iman and Cater get along surprisingly well.

C ~ As one of the few actual royals at the school, Iman has always made a point of being amiable with Leona. He hasn’t always returned the favor but he has warmed up to her over time, especially when he’s heard some of her opinions about Rook and Azul.

D ~ Iman and Kalim have known each other since they were children and they get along very well. Now that they’re older, her family has begun dropping serious hints that she should take an interest in him with the possibility that a marriage can be arranged. Since Iman is not directly in line for the throne, there is no pressure on her to marry another royal but that doesn’t mean her family wants her to marry just anybody. However, though Iman cares about Kalim, she is not interested in him romantically and doesn’t want to marry him. She strongly believes that he deserves to marry someone who loves him and in turn wishes to marry for love as well.

E ~ Another one of Iman’s childhood friends an lowkey childhood crush as well. She may or may not still be crushing on him but weather she is or not is a strict secret that even Vidaria doesn’t know. As a princess, Jamil has always been required to be deferential to her as well but Iman surprisingly does not like this. She clearly likes and respects him as a person and he is one of the few non-royals she considers her equal. She would like to be better friends with him but he constantly feels nervous about having a genuine friendship with someone of her status.

F ~ She and Rook get along well enough and she appreciates that he at least has deference for her royal status. But Vidaria’s uneasiness around Rook (exacerbated during Book 5) compels Iman to keep him at a distance for her sake.

G ~ She gets along surprisingly well with Sebek and she’s respects how devoted he is to his service to the Draconias and finds him generally very amusing. They also share a mutual dislike of Taima. The only reason they aren’t better friends is that Sebek won’t shut up about how incredible Malleus is and for Iman, it can get real grating, real quick.

👑Iman’s Relationships With My Other Twst OCs👑

A ~ Iman and Ione have a somewhat odd dynamic that is not fully contentious (at least, not anymore) but not fully amiable either. They were both accepted for Danica’s VDC team and from the start, Iman openly mocks Ione’s lack of grace and awkwardness when she’s trying to learn the choreography. However, over time, Iman softens her teasing, especially after seeing how cruelly Ace mocks her and seeing how hard Vil is on her about her appearance (especially on the matter of removing her glasses). Iman secretly see’s some of herself in Ione and while she still does tease her, it’s not in a malicious way and has even told Ione that she’s the only one allowed to make comments on her because she knows Ione has alot more to give than she’s currently giving. Ione for her part still feels uncomfortable around Iman because she can never fully tell if Iman’s teasing is genuine or a joke and that uncertainty is not good for her anxiety.

B ~ Sinclair and Iman were on pretty decent terms prior to his overblot but their relationship has gradually crumbled since then and the fact that Iman is on decent terms with Riddle does not help matters. Iman has told Riddle and Vidaria that Sinclair actively makes her feel uncomfortable and is paranoid that he is still resentful about Riddle ousting him and is plotting revenge.

C ~ Iman and Sidonie can’t stand each other and their mutual dislike goes far deeper than the feud the latter has with Vidaria. She also blames Sidonie for Heloise having to leave NRC for almost a year and the resulting emotional stress it caused Vidaria. Sidonie’s perceived closeness to Sinclair doesn’t help matters either. Iman also considers her very conceited and pretentious and no, Iman does not see the irony in this.

E ~ Despite technically being Vidaria’s servant, Iman really likes Heloise and is one of few that she considers her equal. Much like Jamil. Iman really wants to know her better but sadly, Heloise left NRC before she could have that opportunity.

F and G ~ Iman meets Minette and Athena during the VDC. Since they’re on rival teams, Iman doesn’t think much of them at first and actually lashes out at Minette when she catches Rook being flirtatious with her and misunderstands it as a deliberate act of malice against Danica. But by the end of the competition, Iman develops a friendly accord with both of them and the fact that they’re both wealthy (and in Athena’s case, noble) helps matters.

“Important” Headcanons

Can they use chopsticks?

Yes indeedy, because of Saaleha’s work with handling small tools and the like she found chopsticks to be decently easy to master. That, and when she first picked up chopsticks it felt awkward she told herself that because she was an engineer and fiddled with awkward tools that she should be able to do it... So it was more spite and a need to master that made this possible in the end.

What do they do when they can’t sleep?

Saal tends to either try and work on projects, carefully carve charms or just talk a walk. Sometimes a breath of fresh air helps more than anything to at least ease the anxieties and paranoia that keeps her up at night, and sometimes it makes it worse.

What would they impulse buy at the grocery store?

48 hot pickles.

What order do they wash things in the shower?

Depending on the day the top of the list is either hair or face. She normally works from the top down assuming she doesn’t dissociate halfway through the shower and panic because she's late for work and then it’s essentials.

What’s their coffee order?

She just kinda...Takes a mug to work with her and fills up whatever she can get from the bakeries coffee machine. So the size of the mug can vary day by day but usually she always adds a little bit of milk and a shit ton of sugar. She can’t drink her coffee black unlike Yasir, her brother.

What sort of apps do they have on their phone?

She’s got Tumblr, twitter, skype, discord, Pokemon Go, Neko Atsume, Pandora, Bank app, Paypal, The Arcana and a heaping help of always changing other app games.

How do they act around children?

Children are the future and Saaleha fully believes this. She will do what she can for children while attempting to shower them with kindness and praise. One of the bakeries regulars is a kid that she’s taken a liking too. She just wishes he’d stop popping by at like 6am or 11pm. There is no in between. Also, stop coming in with ripped and dirtied clothes as if you’ve been in a fight my boy. Saaleha will fight people for this child despite said child probably being more experienced in handling such matters then herself.

What would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing is really on?

Cooking shows and home buying/decoration shows. She’s a fan of things like Chopped and if she’s lucky theirs a show on cryptids and such she can watch even though she’s probably already watched it 10 times.
