Eleanor Marx and the matchgirls of London

Fearful of returning home to a violent father without having sold enough matches for the day, The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen remains on the street resigned to warming herself by lighting matches. 

With each match, she sees a vision; a warm stove, a table laden with hot food, a beautiful Christmas tree decorated with lights leading up to the sky, so high that one becomes a shooting star. 

According to her grandmother, each shooting star is a person who had recently passed on and is now heading to heaven. Her next strike brings a vision of her grandmother, the only person in the world who ever loved The Little Match Girl who takes her away in her warm embrace to heaven.

The Matchgirls' Strike of 1888 was an industrial action by the women and teenage girls working at the Bryant & May match factory in Bow, London. In the late nineteenth century, matches were made using sticks of poplar or Canadian pine wood, twice the length of the finished product.

The working conditions in the match factory had caused great discontent; with fourteen-hour workdays, poor pay, unjust fines, having no clean area to eat, and the severe health complications of working with allotropes of white phosphorus, which caused phosphorus necrosis also known as phosphorimus chronicus or phossy jaw. 

This discontent grew into open outrage with the dismissal of one of the workers in 1888. In the 1880s, Bryant & May employed nearly 5,000 people, most of them were female and Irish, or of Irish descent. In 1908 the House of Commons passed an Act prohibiting the use of white phosphorus in matches after the 31st of December 1910.

One of the leading supporters of the Matchgirls Strike was Eleanor Marx, one of the most overlooked figures in history and usually overshadowed by her father, Karl Marx. Not only did she collaborate with her father, but she also led an extraordinary life as a labour organiser, trade unionist, translator, actor, writer and feminist.

Yvonne Kapp’s biography on Eleanor Marx brilliantly succeeds in capturing Eleanor’s spirit, from a lively child to becoming the new woman, earning her living as a free intellectual, and helping to lead England’s unskilled workers at the height of the new Trade Union movement. 

She was always more than, yet at the same time inescapably, Karl Marx’s daughter. Eleanor Marx by Yvonne Kapp is an unrivalled biography of the Marx household in Victorian London, of the Marx circle, and of Friedrich Engels, the family’s extraordinary mentor.

More Maren Andersen shenanigans XD (I love her so much ksajdfhkjsd)

I had so much fun writing all of her little notes on her five proteges and the other five she ‘adopted’ into her group after the rigid team structure was disbanded later on in the competition. 

‘Nadia, Felicjan, and Emerich DO NOT interact >:( ‘ is my absolute favorite part of this X’DD (Yeah, she hates how those three treat Triinu, Mihails, and Niele like shit, and she vocalizes that multiple times. For that alone, she’s the best of the mentors, since the rest of them just let those three be bullied for the sake of ‘better TV ratings’.) 

So of course she takes the Unlucky Three under her wing when she’s able to.

As for Timothy and Paulette? After Leticia Hernandes and Mogens Van Dijk--Paulette’s allies--were eliminated from the Competition, she looks for a group, and finds Maren’s. After the Alliance of Five (Timothy, Sophronia Wickland, Yvonne Lafayette, Nadia Hendrikova, and Huan-Yue Fen) falls apart due to infighting, Timothy joins his former teammate Paulette in Maren’s new team. (Especially since he’s already great friends with Niele, Triinu, and Mihails, and is on good terms with Nordic Group as well.)

Fun fact: These ten are basically the focus characters of this story. (Cecile Nacht and her team, as well as Nadia and Felicjan, Sophronia, and Noel, are also important, and have some focus characters, but I’d call them secondary characters, though Nadia and Felicjan become more important as the story progresses.)

NOTES: Two days before the show closed on Broadway. Good amount of closeups and good quality filmed from the mid-mezzanine; there is a railing issue for a while in Act 1 but the taper improves. 'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.

This is the first (and so far, only) video with Kiril Kulish in the role of Billy. Unfortunately about 15 minutes of the show is missing due to battery issues. What's missing is: Grandma's song "We Go Dancing", the scene between Dad and Tony, the beginning of "Deep Into The Ground", and the scene between Mrs. Wilkinson and Dad discussing Billy's ballet. It appears the filmer was trying to conserve battery power and was trying to focus on Billy's scenes. DVD has been enhanced with main menu and thumbnail images for access to the various songs. A-

A very solid and funny cast. Nikki does a fantastic job acting and vocally. On wide shots there can be heads on the sides, but nothing that really obstructs the action. During Broadway previews, less than a month before the official premiere. So there are differences from the Cast Recording. Very nice video of the show however a bar can be visible in wide shots but it doesn't interfere with anything.

The volume gives an overview of Nordic Gothic fiction in relation to transnational developments and provides a number of case studies and in-depth analyses of individual narratives. It creates an understanding of this under-researched cultural phenomenon by showing how the narratives make visible cultural anxieties haunting the Nordic countries, their welfare systems, identities and ideologies. Nordic Gothic examines how figures from Nordic folklore function as metaphorical expressions of Gothic themes and Nordic settings are explored from perspectives such as ecocriticism and postcolonialism. The book will be of interest to researchers and post- and- undergraduate students in various fields within the Humanities.

I’m always looking for new RP buddies on this and all my other blogs. I’m a huge believer that OOC and IC should be separate but if you RP with me I will pester you to build friendships so we can make the best long term stories.

Lorcan is going to hit hard on themes of disability, but there is human sacrifice in his home (not children since that’s my own hard limit), and there is also mentions of cannibalism in his clan. Much of this is stuff on fluff interactions won’t come up, but it will come up if you get in deep with him and his family. Even then I’m a super flexible RPer and take my partners comfort as the biggest aspect of writing any scene!
