In The Stars

Quick oneshot written for @zkfanworkweek day 3 inspired by @tihnixx 's art

She had lied to him, she already knew the myth of Ursa Major. She had found a scroll about the constellations when they first arrived at the old beach house. But for some reason she wanted to hear him telling the story. 'No, I've never heard about it, could you tell me?', she had said.

So now she smiled as he told her all about it. She has been smiling a lot around him these days. Later, she would try to understand why. For now, she was focused on wondering what was it about being there, outside, laying only a few inches beside him while the rest of their friends were already asleep, that made the stars above her sparkle a bit brighter and the grass beneath her tickle a bit too much.

"I remember one night, when Azula was still a baby, my mother told her: 'And there's Ursa Minor. Just like you and I, mother and daughter, they'll always be together'", he chuckled, "I got so jealous that I chose a constellation for me so I could be in the stars with them".

"That's sweet."

"That's silly."

"Those things can coexist", she let out a chuckle of her own and tilted her head to look at him. Suddenly not only the grass but even the air around her and the strand of her own hair that brushed her cheek seemed to tickle. "Which one did you choose?"

"That one", he pointed to the sky and her gaze followed the invisible line that extended from the tip of his finger. "It's called Draco."

"The dragon? That's suitable", she giggled softly and even though she was facing upwards, she could swear she saw his irises wandering in her direction for a second and the corner of his mouth lifting in a smile. "I liked your idea, I want to pick one for me too."

You can have them all. Did he really think that? What was it with him and his thoughts these days? "From my sky or from yours?"

"From both, even though they're the same."

Yes, they are. It doesn't matter if they are watched by different stars, the Southern Water Tribe and the Fire Nation sleep under the same sky. It brought him some strange comfort to remind that, some strange, unsettling peace.

"From mine, I'll go with The Great Fish. It has one the brightest stars. From here, do you have any suggestion?"

He remained silent for a heartbeat. "Lyra", he once more pointed to the night, "those five stars", he drew them in the air.

"Why?"

It's right beside mine. "Do you remember that street musician we passed by on our way to that ridiculous play, that one you gave almost all of our coins to?" His voice got softer at that. "He was playing the Lyra."

"Do you want one too?"

"What? A lyra?" He looked at her and raised his brow.

"No, Zuko", she laughed. He realized his choice didn't do her justice, her laughter sounded sweeter than a lyra. "Do you want a constellation, from the south?"

"Oh, sure. Do you have one in mind?"

''I do, actually. The Fire Eagle. Long ago it was called The Sea Eagle. But once, a Water Tribe merchant got lost in a Fire Nation desert. He had already run out of water and thought he didn't have much time left. So he prayed, asked every water spirit to help him or send help. Then he saw an eagle with its wings made of fire. He followed it and it led him towards the city he was trying to get to. When he returned home he told everyone his story and then people started calling it The Fire Eagle. Some believe that The Sea Eagle and The Fire Eagle are the same spirit, a shapeshifter that adjusts itself to the environment it's in so it can help people from all around the world."

"I'm honored", he smiled but avoided her eyes. Was that pink on his cheeks?

There was another reason why she had chosen that one for him, a reason that she didn't want to tell him, it was stupid: The Fire Eagle is very close to The Great Fish.

"It's going to be nice". Why did she start saying this? "Once we win this war, once we're apart, each in our own home, I'll be able to look at the sky and know you're somehow there, near". She cursed her lips when she heard her own voice pronouncing those absurd words she didn't mean to let out.

"I'll do the same."

She's going to be in the sky, in our shared sky. He smiled to himself. She's already everywhere, in everything. She's in the blue hydrangeas and in every body of water. There's a bit of her in every poem he's ever heard. And now, as if she weren't already in the moon, she's going to be in the stars.

She's in the stars.

Or maybe it's the opposite, maybe they are in her, he thinks when he allows his gaze to fall to the side and sees the entire night reflected on her. Why bother looking at the sky when all the stars are in her eyes?

Something stronger than the tides and gentler than the ocean breeze pulled his hand to rest on top of hers. It couldn't have been himself to do it, why would he do it? Maybe the grass started to move and accidently carried his hand. Yes, it must have been the grass. He had found it to be tickling a lot that night, after all. Maybe it had been already trying to move.

When the grass moves again, this time controlling her hand and causing her to intertwin their fingers, he thanks it. He refuses to admit it to himself but he hopes that, with this touch, there's going to be a bit of her in him.

And then he begins to hear a small, distant voice humming something incomprehensible from somewhere. Somewhere not that far away, actually. And just when he thinks he'll never understand what this voice that sounds an awful lot like his own is telling him, just when he thinks he'll never understand what is the word that's echoing in the walls of his heart, he realizes it's her name.

Day 7 of @zkfanworkweek week: Recommendations

I was originally going to post this for Hidden Gem day, but hey, better late than never! This gif set I made has lyrics from the song “Sleepy Eyes" that @ryzelpretzel created for Zutara OPM week 2020. She also made two other Zutara songs, called “Catacombs” and “Somewhere Between” (the latter of which was inspired by “Once Around the Sun”) on her YouTube channel that are certainly worth listening to as well. Ryzel Pretzel has a very beautiful singing voice, and her lyrics are eloquent and marvelously written for Zuko and Katara. I would definitely recommend listening to all three of her Zutara songs, and checking out the rest of her YouTube channel that goes by the same name!

The first time that I came here talking about Zutara was in July, when I first watched the show and I had no idea of the very existence of this amazing community. I remember that I asked for some fic recs because I didn't know where to start and I was actually surprised to receive so many suggestions.

Anyway, here I am suggesting some of the works that I have read during this six intense months. And to all of you who write stories out there: you have saved this months, so thank you.

My most recent obsession. It's an ongoing fic, set post canon and surprisingly original. I've read so many post canon stories because they're my favourite ones and yet I get excited whenever this story gets updated.

The way the author expresses the emotions, the almost poetic style, the short excerpts at the beginning of every chapter and especially the characterization. I'm a sucker for IC characters and this story is the best as regards this aspect.

(Also: the way she writes the gaang!! Amazing!!)

Lilacs and Lily Pads by @sadladybug

After getting your heart crushed with Clothe me in seasons, this lovely story will heal your damaged soul. It's about Zuko and Katara's wedding preparations and I swear, it's so, so sweet and funny. Definitely one of the best fics I have ever read. If you want romance and comedy and court drama, this might be the perfect story.

(my poor heart still hopes in the wedding chapter!)

(I also suggest Bones, which is the one-shot sequel, RATED E, about their wedding night. So sweet!)

Zutara Fanworks Appreciation Week snuck up on me, so sadly I haven’t had time to properly contribute anything. I’d love to participate next year or maybe even before then (I play by my own rules, folks!)

Still, though. I wanted to at the very least pay tribute to some of my all-time favorite Zutara fanfics that I’ve enjoyed and have inspired me over the years.

I’ve shipped Zutara ever since Fall 2006, and I have been fortunate to read so many excellent fanfics since then.

Some have made me laugh, others made me sob, others straight up made my heart burn like it was shot full of lightning:

Zuko finds himself engulfed by love.

A sweet one-shot of our favorite firebender discovering how deep his feelings are for a certain waterbender. It’s just pure fluff and always brings a smile to my face.

Seventy years later, Korra tries to figure out Zuko and Katara.

Oh, this one is so bittersweet but oh so good. It alternates between flashbacks and Korra’s POV watching an older Zuko and Katara interact. Just… ugh. My heart.

 Day 6: Found by SooperSara

When Sokka comes up with an idea to get rid of Joo Dee, Katara finds herself in the Lower Ring of Ba Sing Se with a tea server she did not expect to meet.

I love a good Jasmine Dragon AU where Katara / the Gaang actually interacts with Zuko while he’s undercover as Lee from the tea shop instead of what happened in “The Guru.” This is so much fun to read, and my only complaint is that it’s not longer.

 Celestial by SooperSara

An unexpected dip into the koi pond at the North Pole brings Zuko in contact with the spirits and grants him insight to his destiny. A destiny he isn’t sure he wants.

Another by the talented SooperSara! Actually, you should check out all of her stuff. It’s all so good, and I absolutely adore this one. It’s pretty canon-compliant and the ending… oh, the ending makes me tearbend. Ma’am, I’m still weepy.

There's a secret door in the wall of Katara's room. Things go a little further than planned, once she opens it.

What happens when Katara discovers a secret tunnel (secret, secret, secret tunnel, yeah!) that leads directly to the Fire Lord’s bedroom? Reading this fic is like settling down to drink a hot cup of Iroh’s tea – it’s soothing, sweet, and thoroughly warms the soul.  

 Dancing in the Dark by damagectrl

Post-Season 2 AU: While in Ba Sing Se, Katara and Toph hear a rumor about two tea servers in the lower tiers of Ba Sing Se and sneak away go to investigate only to have their suspicions confirmed. On her personal time, Katara tries to teach herself to dance and fails so badly, a masked man takes pity on her to try to help.

This is one most OGs will probably remember. It’s also one of the first ZK fics I ever read, back when I was a wee lil bb Zutarian! It was originally posted in Oct. 2006 and takes place between “Appa’s Lost Days” and “Lake Laogai.” One of my all-time favorite Bluetara AND Jasmine Dragon AUs. Heck, all of damagectrl’s works are fantastic reads, for that matter. I highly recommend checking them out, especially this classic.

Katara's ambition, so long set aside for the good of others, breaks free and sets fire to her soul. Or, Katara has a vision of her canon future, casts it aside, and becomes a world-changing politician instead.

There’s a reason why this fic is one of the highest rated on AO3, if not THE highest. It does right by Katara and gives her the ending she deserves. 10/10 would recommend.

 better than things dreamed of in the forest by catie_writes_things (SERIES)

As a child, Bumi knew: his mother was a waterbender, his father was an airbender, and he was a firebender. Something about these facts did not add up, but it would take him a long time to understand.

Hands down, one of the most heartbreaking fics / series I’ve ever read. The author describes this as the adultery fic for people who hate adultery fics, and it certainly packs an emotional punch in the gut. Personally, I’m not one for the “Zuko and Katara have an affair while she’s with Aang” fics in general, but this one examines the fallout caused by a single night of passion and all of the consequences that stem from it, especially how the ripple effect of their choices impacts everyone. Even though it breaks my heart all over again every time I reread it, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Moonlight and Sunshadow by GrapefruitTwostep

The dragon offered Katara a deal: protection for her family and tribe if she lived with it for a year and a day. And she said yes. Because what other way was there to save her people? But there was more to the dragon than Katara bargained for. An "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" retelling.

A fairy tale AU in which Zuko is cursed to live as a dragon and Katara is certainly no damsel in distress. You’ve probably heard some version of the original fairy tale before that this fic is inspired by, and it’s such a delight to read.

 The Blackfish and the Dragon by ama

Katara grew up in the Southern Water Tribe under the tutelage of Hama, the only waterbender ever to have escaped Fire Nation captivity. When Zuko arrives at the South Pole, seeking the Avatar, they are more than ready to defend him. Then one day, the Southern Water Tribe receives a petition for peace, and a proposal of marriage.

One of the best arranged marriage AUs I’ve come across. Iroh is crowned Fire Lord after defeating Ozai, and Katara must find some way to peacefully coexist with her hotheaded new husband as she also finds a place for herself in the Fire Nation.

 Confused by thispieceofwork

Zuko stood. "You told Aang you were confused. Are you confused because of me?" Katara was silent, arms crossed in front of her. "Don't make me answer that."

Starts during “The Ember Island Players” where Zuko overhears Aang and Katara’s private conversation on the balcony. This is another fic that will shatter your heart into a million pieces but it’s oh so worth it in the end.

 A Heated Exchange by Smediterranea (SERIES)

Katara had not considered herself to be someone who would have earth-shattering sex with a guy whose name she didn’t even know. But here she was, certain that she had never made a better decision in her life.

An AU two-part series of Katara getting familiar with a certain handsome guy who lives down the hall in her college dorm. It’s funny, cute, and cuddling while watching Planet Earth has never been hotter.

 Bonus day: Tea Shop by cincilin

"Hello and welcome to the Jasmine Dragon. Today's special is—" he cut himself of with a sharp intake of breath, at the same moment that Katara placed the voice and looked up.

'He has hair.' was her first thought. Then the rest of her brain caught up with her and she started to get up, sending Momo scrambling to hide under the table. Season 2 AU, during "The Guru."

I told y’all, I *LOVE* a good Jasmine Dragon AU fic, and this one-shot checks all the boxes: heart-to-heart conversations? Witty dialogue and banter? Bending match that turns into a makeout and something steamier? It’s got it all.

Day 7: Rec List Saturday

I just love the giffed cuts above, and the song + dialogue clips give me so many feels.

“Sorry” by Fandom.com

I’ve been listening to this one a lot while writing my longfic Lightning Sun. The song by Halsey dives into the psychology of someone who fundamentally believes they don’t deserve love and/or doesn’t understand or believe how other people could love them. I think with all her abandonment issues, Katara would probably vibe with this.

“Easier” by TeamHodgins

Another one for the longfic feels. At the beginning of Lightning Sun, Zuko is in prolonged recovery from Azula’s strike, thus the lyrics, “I’m stuck, I’m stuck, I’m stuck here in my skin.”

The story is told mostly through the pov of Katara, who’s on a journey of self-discovery to understand her own issues with abandonment and what they mean for her feelings towards Zuko; hence, “Tell me it gets easier, tell me it gets easier, tell me it gets easier, that I’ll figure it out.”

“I’d let you win” by quinn darley

Pretty self-explanatory for Zuko. “I’d let you in. I’d let you win my heart again.”

Not listening to it much recently. Real longfic vibes, especially with these lyrics:

Fanfics:

Before moving onto the fic recs, I just wanna make a quick note about my preferences. Most of the following will be rated M or above. I’ve been an honest-to-God adult for a few years now, so I like fics that deal with more mature themes and adult problems.

I’m also a slut for angst. You will find very little fluff ahead (though some of these have their moments). Proceed accordingly. And not to be a hipster about Zutara fic, but there are definitely some out there that don’t get enough love, namely my top three (listed in order).

What makes a fic really stand out for me? It’s pretty simple actually. It has to be something that’s a little different, a little off-the-wall, with vivid worldbuilding. But MOST importantly, it has to make me deeply feel something. If a scene sticks in my head even months afterwards due to a combination of vivid sensory detail and visceral emotional reactions, that fic will be on this list.

Two Worlds Collide by mangx3

My co-captain @antarcticasx​ and I welcome you aboard the TWC Supremacy. Fear not; though the voyage may at first prove daunting and ill-fated, rest assured that you’re in for an emotionally satisfying journey that promises to rip your heart out in all the best ways.

No, but seriously, this fic is so much better than it has any right to be. I will admit, the frame structure of the tale is not to my taste, and some plot points in the first act may seem contrived. But my god, do you go on a journey with this fic. Bc it was written over the course of four years, you actually get to witness mangx3 improve as a writer. By the end, the storytelling is 💋👌🏻 And if that’s not enough for you, at one point, Zuko refers to Katara—in her absence, mind—as both “my heart” and “my life.” I just... I die 💀

Each Other by jennibare

Aang is dead + the aftermath fic. The story is well balanced between both Zutara and the steambabies.

Love Thy Enemy by RedNovember

Kind of a soulmate au. Worldbuilding is top-notch. And the climax in the third act? My god, the imagery, the emotion, just... 😭

Rumour Has It by @fictionissocialinquiry

BluePaint bible. Constantly torn between wanting to read more Blue Spirit/Painted Lady fic and knowing that none will ever compare. (I say this as someone with a BluePaint outline in the works.) This is also like my go-to re-read, though I usually stop around chapter 73 bc of that scene *fans self* and also I can’t put myself through the partial heartbreak of the ending again. Waiting to start the sequel once it’s complete.

Strength by tini243

Fair warning: this fic is incomplete and abandoned. HOWEVER, it follows the story through most of the second act, so I still left feeling satisfied. It’s a soulmate au that ends with casually married Zutara revealing their relationship to the gaang, and there’s just something so delicious about that drama.

Hopeless by @zutaradreams

The structure of this story is so unique in the way it’s sandwiched between a prologue and epilogue told from a side character pov. Plus, it’s told out of order which makes it fun to put the pieces together. Zutara build a life in Ba Sing Se when all hell breaks loose. Also, steambaby! Another go-to re-read.

happy zk fanwork appreciation week!! i was lowkey oblivious to this event (because i've been drowning in school n my other wips), BUT yesterday at approximately 6pm, i decided that i had to do this and basically grinded this all out until the wee hours of the morning, haha. 6k words in like... record time, lol.

i hope everything makes sense (it's a tol oneshot, and i didn't outline like i normally do before writing).  all of my other wips will be taking a backseat this week as i try to keep up ;)

this fic is for lev/pokidokies on tumblr/instagram!! i've only really been actively involved in the zk fandom for the past two/three months now, but she's created a lot of the zk art that i first really fell in love with! she's unbelievably talented, and i'm a HUGE fan of her work. she’s a straight BLESSING to the zk fandom, n i hope i was able to do her adorable hs universe justice <333

(also yes, i listened to a punk rock playlist while writing most of this, and yes, most of the part names come from punk rock song titles/lyrics, lol).

Hello all!!

I'm coming in hot here with my fluff friday fic for @zkfanworkweek!!

It's based off of the beautiful art by @te-al-latte from this year's Zutara Week-- this one has been stuck in my head literally everyday since. I just melt over this art, and when it was time to write fluff, this is exactly where my brain needed to go. The fic takes some time to get there, but when have I ever been known to get to the point??

Here it is: A Red Sky at Night

A small snippet to whet your appetite:

Monsoon season sits like a leaden weight over the Fire Nation capital. The usual chitter and bustle of the markets and streets near the harbor is muted, the children herded inside (much to the chagrin of meticulous mothers), the markets forced into overhangs, their wares significantly reduced or waterlogged (much to the chagrin of the fathers now unable to escape their penned children and fractious wife). It is one of the few things that equalizes the Royal with the Commoner, the Noble with the Merchant. It is ironic, Katara can’t help but contemplate -- it is her element that humbles all who encounter it to their base aspect: humanity.

However, even the waterbender is feeling the past two weeks of solid rain. When Zuko had left for the burgeoning project in the Earth Kingdom at the summer solstice, she had yet to experience the long sock in of rain that pelted the capital every year. After all, at that point they had only been married six months.

But duty had called, and now just as long as she had been married, she had been separated from him.
