32. Favorite Merlin fic you've read in recent memory?

Alright, I have two I read recently that I absolutely loved from start to finish. They're both Modern AUs but the character interactions are so on point and they made me smile all the way through :)

37. Random plot idea you think would have been funny for an episode?

I really think it would be fun if they had a musical episode XD But seriously, it would totally fit the overall vibe and sense of humor of the show. Just imagine…one day someone casts a singing curse in Camelot and Merlin has to figure out what's happening (as he's the only one who isn't affected because of his magic). And the best part is he wouldn't even notice it until one morning when he's tending to Arthur and he suddenly starts singing his heart out about how tough it is to be prince and how everyone always expects so much of him or about his secret feelings for Gwen or Merlin... Anyway, it's just a silly idea but that would be so fun to watch (plus, we would get to hear Bradley and Colin sing together again <3)

My headcanon about Arthur's mortality (or how I think he was able to survive before Merlin came to Camelot)

"(The griffin is a creature of magic.) It is born of magic, sire, and it can only be killed by magic." - Gaius, S1E5

Alright, since Merlin is trending again for no reason I'll share one of my lastest headcanons I came up with during my last Merlin rewatch.

There was something about this line from Gaius and the way the camera then directly pans out to Arthur that made me think of an interesting headcanon that would explain how Arthur managed to survive so long without Merlin.

You see, according to this logic, because he was born of magic, Arthur can only be killed by magic (or weapons forged by magic *winkwink*). So he could never really die from simple illnesses or battle wounds unless those were directly inflicted by magic. And, since Uther started the purge against magic right after Arthur was born, he probably wouldn't have had much contact with it in his early years (at least until he became a knight and started going out on quests, raids, etc).

That would explain why (much like Merlin) he seems able to endure so many injuries (broken ribs, poisoned arrows, etc) that other knights can't. (I mean, just the fact that this man didn't sustain some severe brain damage from all the times he's been knocked out is impressive lol)

What I'm saying is that being born of magic must have given him some sort of endurance that other mortals don't have, because by Gaius' logic the circumstances of his birth in itself made him a sort of creature of magic (just like Merlin).

It would also make for a good Canon divergence fic in which this was the reason that made Uther start the purge in the first place (to protect his son from the only thing that could kill him)...and it can get even more angsty if you add in the fact that Merlin is literally magic itself, but I digress.

Anyway, I'm probably reading way too much into this. I doubt the writers would've thought so far ahead as to put foreshadowing so early on in the series. But I just thought it was an interesting headcanon and just another fun parallel between Merlin and Arthur.

26. Post Merlin Headcanons?

Alright, while I usually like to believe that Merlin never returned to Camelot after Camlann (for angst reasons), I still think that Merlin would have come back (if not for Arthur, at least for Gwen and Gaius). He wouldn't return right away, but some months after Gwen's coronation (maybe after hearing some news of Camelot or how Gwen is doing as queen), and he and Gwen would bond again over their shared grief for Arthur and become a strong unit of platonic besties ruling over Camelot. Merlin would help Gwen lift the magic ban and maybe even help her raise Arthur's kid if she had gotten pregnant in the aftermath of Camlann...idk I just think it would be cute and together they wouldn't feel so lonely after Arthur's death.

In fact, I may or may not have a fic with that exact premise sitting in my drafts right now 👀

3. Villain you think deserved another chance.

Does Morgana count? Because I will forever be a Morgana apologist (up until Season 4 at least) and I really believe she deserved a better villian arc in the show (not just being reduced to a smirking villian). And what's frustrating about the writing in the show is that the pieces for that arc were already there in S1-S2, but the writers just wanted to speed-up her villian arc and ended up butchering her character in the process. But, even after everything, i still think she deserved some sort of redemption (at least in relation to the way she treated Arthur and Gwen). I mean, they didn't even have to do much, they could have just borrowed that storyline from the legends where Morgana is the one to go on the boat with him at the end and guides him to Avalon to heal before his time to return. It was all right there!!

Sorry if this is super long, apparently I had a lot of thoughts about this 😅

Thank you @tiny-and-witchy for the tag! This is going to be fun and also difficult, seeing as I have so many hiperfixations it will be hard to pick just 5 lol

1- BBC Merlin (currently my biggest one by far, if you can't tell haha)

2- Tragic character arcs (which also ties in with my love for bbc merlin) and great writing in Tv shows in general (some of my favourites in terms of writing are definitely Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, Fleabag and Bojack Horseman, they're all really 10/10)

3- Animation (and how it's an underrated medium, especially now) - some of my favourite animated shows are Atla, Gravity Falls and the Owl House (would love to have mutuals from these fandoms btw)

4- Musicals (anything from Hamilton and Les Mis to Dear Evan Hensen, I'm almost into all of them)

5- Period dramas (The Borgias, The Tudors, Bridgerton,...) and really especific periods in history as well

arthur, already believing them to be courting, desperately trying to figure out if that was a proposal for marriage or not but tired of being confused and deciding fuck it: here.

merlin, taking it: i…uh…huh?

arthur, watching merlin with hawk eyes and trying to figure out what he’s thinking and feeling: it’s my mothers sigil

merlin, confused as FUCK but is focusing on the fact that arthur is handing him something of his mother rather than a death sentence: my…my lord?

arthur, realizing how scared merlin’s must be about him finding out about his magic and trying to comfort him while also proposing, killing two birds with one stone: i will always keep you at my side, merlin, so long as we both shall live. if you’ll allow me.

merlin, almost collapsing with relief and tearing up, smiling at arthur as if he had parted the storm clouds to allow sun to shine down on them in that moment: of course…of course, arthur. always and forever.

merlin, watching the castle staff rush this way and that: wow. this banquet must be incredibly important

sir leon the long suffering, day one ride or die, one of the original merthur shippers: banquet? merlin, this is for your wedding

merlin, overworked and exhausted: my WHAT? to WHO??

Merlin x Arthur | The Poisoned Chalice

It's finally here! My first Merthur fic in over 3 years! 💕 This one shot is heavily influenced by The Poisoned Chalice episode (S01E04). To be honest, it's very similar except with a slightly different ending....

Shout out to @thenerdyalien for their fantastic post about how Beowulf was used in Merlin's enchantments (it's a really great post and you can read it here!)

I used different excerpts of Beowulf to the show and included the modern English translation rather than old English (the version I used was translated by Francis B. Gummere)
