our kid is asking me for help to learn how to draw eyes. i started putting a 'short tutorial' together for him and its now nine pages long and im not even done everything i wanted to say yet.

ive never really made a tutorial before, do you guys have anything more you think i could show him how to do? im planning on getting into eyebrows, eye expressions, and maybe the proportions of the eye in the human face...?

Decided that I needed some writing practice, so I'm taking a shot at writing a scene from @xbomboi's EAH arc, Fable Fest. It's a great fan creation of what could've been, so please go read it!

Fair warning, this is my first time writing using canon characters AND fanon characters, so this may not turn out like my other writing. I hope I got Deter's and Wanda's characterizations down well. Enjoy!

"Look," Deter began, "We don't like you." At "you", he pointed his clapped hands towards the two royalty standing before him and Wanda.

I can't believe I had to say that. What are we, spellementary students?

Apple made a sound similar to that of a kicked dog's, and Raven face fell from confusion to disbelief.

The short blonde was quick to regain her posture, though to without squared shoulders and clasped hands. "But why?" Apple gasped out. "That isn't fairest!"

Isn't fairest? That "isn't fairest?" Is she joking?

Deter chuckled bitterly. "I'll tell you why, Apple White," he replied, the embers of anger sparking to life, "You fairytale royalty act all high and mighty," he moved his hands in a quick, grand flourish, "while you couldn't care less about what happens to us." At that, his hands dropped back into a tight cross on his body.

Wanda pushed up her glasses, eyes like flint as she lifted her chin. "It's true."

Apple stepped forward, ignoring Raven's attempt to pull her back. "That's not true!" the blonde fired back, "Everyone plays an important part." She nodded firmly to herself, while Raven winced like she'd been stung.

Deter scoffed. I can't believe this girl is supposed to be the queen someday. "In what, your stories?" He jabbed a finger towards Apple, mouth quirking into a mocking smirk. "What about those that aren't in them? What do they matter, your future highness?"

Apple stumbled back like she'd been slapped, eyes glassy. Raven's body flared a bright purple, before settling as she stepped forward. "Hey, back off." She glanced back at her friend, eyes softening, before turning back to Deter. "She's learning." The blonde perked up, her smile returning. Deter fought the urge to roll his eyes.

Guess little miss trailblazer needs a wake-up call, too.

"You're no better than her, Raven Queen."

Raven's brow furrowed, and her expression turned back to confusion. "What?"

This time, nothing deterred Deter from letting his eyes roll with a scoff. "They call you the rebel of all rebels, but I'd hardly call what what you've started a rebellion."

"Excuse me?" Her voice was sharper now, but Wanda's low chuckle and nod of encouragement to Deter fueled the burning rage in his throat.

Like a lion with a gazelle, he circled her, going in for the kill.

"Sure, you may think you "freed everyone from the chains of destiny", he retorted, putting emphasis with air quotes, "but that's only for the same people who've always had fairytales."

Her head swung as he waltzed, sparkling flames leaking from her clenched fists. "I'm fighting so that we can all have the freedom to choose our own stories."

This girl...! She really doesn't understand. Deter barked out a pained laugh. "All, huh? you really think that?"

Wanda clicked her tongue. "If any of us did what you've done, we'd be locked up in a dungeon."

"What!?" Apple's already porcelain face paled, and Deter fought back a vicious grin. Good. Her ignorance truly would be her downfall.

Deter could see Wanda's frustration grow as she sighed, long and hard, as though she was a teacher dealing with a particularly thick skulled student, leaning her head back and rubbing between her eyes before she locked in on Apple, lips curled back. "Fairytale society is designed to favor individuals with prestigious stories." Like yours, Deter thought, "Meanwhile, the rest of us are stuck living in them."

Deter stopped back in front of Raven. "That's what's not fairest." His smirk widened as Apple withered before his very eyes.

"I-I didn't know..." Her voice faded off, and she shrunk further into herself as Deter and Wanda glared.

That's right, you didn't, because you were too absorbed of yourself and your stupid Happily Ever After.

Wanda straightened and dusted off her clothes, her eyes still trained on the blonde. "Precisely why we must win. If our school beats Ever After High, everyone will be left with no choice but to acknowledge us for a change."

With the nail in the coffin, Deter turned sharply on his heel, hustling past Raven and knocking shoulders with her for good measure. Wanda followed, stalking past a wilted Apple and a shaking Raven.

Headmaster Perrault would be proud.

Turning his head, Deter snarked, "But good luck, right? You're surely gonna need it."

How to write angst ?

know your character. from their deepest fears to what they cherish the most. know your deepest fear, ask yourself how you will react and feel at that moment. "oh shit, if this happened to me I'll lose my mind" what's that type of scenario for you? write it. :)

decide on the type of angst you are going for!

major, minor, physical, emotional, paranormal, spiritual, verbal, abusive, quarrel, misunderstanding, etc.

and then, decide on--what reaction you can take out of your character by doing what to them.

are they gonna be, held at a gunpoint to give something up? or have their soul wrecked by whom they thought were close to them? or is it going be horror, or etctec, decide on it.

moving on to actually writing it-

Tip 1 - Use sensory details.

her eyes brimmed with tears

his chest heaved

pain clawed at his heart, as his face twisted with hurt

his scream pierced my heart

her lips quivered

she dug her nails into her palms (to distract herself, to stop it from shaking, etc)

show what is happening to ur MC, instead of telling it.

Tip 2 - how to actually write it.

If they're panicking, make them notice too many things at once, show every detail that they're seeing, feeling, from touch, to that burning sensation on their eyes, the blood on the ground, that dryness of their throat, the buzzing in their head and their parted lips unable to trust their own sight, and--and, boom! have them register that they're really really in trouble. and that they've to act fast.

use short, very minimal type of writing for this. make it long, but not long enough that it feels like it's being dragged.

the readers should hold themselves back from skimming the page out of curiousity, they should be in their toes to find out what happens next.

what does your MC do in times of panic? do they chant calm down to themselves, do they get angry, or start crying.. or?? what makes your character genuinely feel an emotion so hard that they'll burst?

there's always something, someone that'll always give them love and easily can be that something or someone to take it away. yk.

Tip 3 - crying.

what is close to your character that u can deprive them of? will it make them cry? beg for it?

what will make ur character cry so hard, that their scream fills everyone's ear, stays in their minds like ghosts and always haunts them?

make a character who never cries, burst out with tears.

while writing crying, focus on the 5 senses, one after the other.

focus it on their breath, make them run out of breath, gasp for air, feel like they're being choked, cry so scrutinizingly. it shud punch the reader's gut.

have them replay what had just happened over and over again in their head

best books and writing styles (for angst) to analyse and learn from (in my opinion);

3rd book in the AGGTM series (yk it hit hard like a truck. it got me depressed in bed the entire time lmao)

Five Survive by Holly Jackson. The moments of red outside of the truck, and moments leading to it.

there's this book called " Warm by @untalentedwriter127 " in wattpad. the author served angst for breakfast, lunch anddd dinner.

yapping about Briar. fellow Briar enjoyers assemble.

okay okay i don’t make it too obvious (or maybe i do, i wouldn’t know) but briar is my personal favorite character. i think about where the stories of all the characters would go and what their arcs would be a lot, but hers in particular is really important to me.

so i wanna talk about it.

first of all, she’s narcoleptic coded, right. we all know that. but her mom on the other hand reads to me, like, an alcoholic mother? and her dad is just willfully ignorant. either way, there’s a huge sense of neglect going on in that family. i mean go figure why briar would be the one doing most of the work raising her brothers. and of course she’s a party girl, because who’s gonna stop her? her parents? see yeah exactly.

so i don’t think it’s unreasonable to say she doesn’t have very strong parental figures in her life, at least not at home. but, and now you have to really hear me out about this one, i think baba yaga could take up a parental role in her life.

i know it isn’t much, but the seeds for her having at least a hint of a connection with baba yaga are there.

in the webisode “Stark Raven Mad”, baba yaga scolds briar for rambling about her party, and then as the commotion picks up she’s still exercising authority over briar in particular.

then there’s thronecoming, wherein, when briar is sulking at the dance, upon noticing the picture on the projector, she asks baba yaga for answers, who provides them.

and then skipping all the way to epic winter, after the girls become a little creeped out by her mannerisms and book it, briar is the one who makes sure to peak back in and give a parting remark.

so i think there’s potential there to be explored. her feeling neglected at home and then finding solace in another adult at school would be neat.

but the fact that it’s baba yaga is important, so just put a pin in that and we’ll circle back to it.

now, i think out of the core four, she was (at least at first) the hardest to actually pin-point what the future of her story could look like. with raven, i think it’s pretty clear her journey is just continuing to combat the prejudices of the world as she fights for change, apple is now pretty much on a path to figuring out her own future as ruler of a kingdom and what that’s going to entail, and maddie is the goofball that’s there to have fun and be supportive along the way.

then there’s briar. and, let me be clear, no, in my mind that girl is not sleeping for 100 years with where things are heading; in the main universe of the story, briar will be free of the sleeping beauty destiny.

but it’s like, if she’s not gonna sleep, what more is there to actually do with her? what direction COULD her life go in? because if she’s no longer fated to sleep 100 years of her life away, then she can’t just party like there’s no tomorrow anymore. she’d need to decide what she actually wants to do with her life.

and i think i have an idea.

i mentioned her narcoleptic coding at the start with intent to bring it up again. see, you might notice that a lot of the fairytale aspects of ever after high can be read as allegories for real-world problems. for example, hunter and ashlynn’s relationship is treated in their world the same way society may look at queer couples or biracial couples. or how raven’s mom being trapped in a mirror is their world equivalent to not paying child support.

with that kind of correlation in mind, i think treating briar’s curse as a condition could open up an interesting opportunity. i think, in their world, curses as a whole could be viewed as a separate branch of medical specialization, with briar spearheading this notion of thought.

we know briar is well-versed in chemythstry already. in the webisode “Briar’s Study Party” she makes note of the fact that she’s been studying forever-after, and she demonstrates enough knowledge in the subject to enthusiastically teach it to her friends, who all end up acing their tests on it as a result.

i think this is something she could potentially make a career out of. i think she could come to the conclusion that she wants to be able to help break curses for people everywhere, and could pursue learning to develop potions and elixirs to do so.

which could happen under baba yaga’s tutelage.

picture this: briar declares her newfound goal, to which baba yaga offers to teach briar all she knows in order to achieve what she’s set her sights on. briar—with an ounce of hesitance—accepts, and baba yaga officially takes her under her wing with the intent of mastering sorcery.

obviously, she wouldn’t lose who she is in this. she’s still gonna be an impulsive, adrenaline junkie who desperately needs a screentime limit on her mirrorphone. but in this process, she’d be rounded out by baba yaga and would in turn mature a bit from the experience. she’d get serious about life, but she wouldn’t let go of who she is at heart.

this could lead to her becoming the resourceful one in the main group. like on adventures, she’d be able to pull out a potion or whip something up (because i’m not going to let raven’s magic make her too o.p. she’s gotta have limitations) as a solution to problems. she could really have a role that proves useful and important to the story.

that’s my ideal pitch for where to take briar’s character.

If people were too mean to you when you were growing up, a newborn animal will materialize inside your brain and it’s so so scared and shivering and it will stay there for years. Decades, even. And whenever you say something kind of weird but true to your heart the animal will tell you “Noo! You can’t say that! If you say that, everyone will hate you!”. The animal means well. It’s so so small and everything is so scary for them and it’s just trying to protect you. But listen to me. Listen to me. Whenever this happens, you can’t do what the animal says. You can’t. If you do, you’ll become as scared as the animal. You have to keep saying weird shit. You have to keep doing things the animal wouldn’t approve of. If you do enough things that scare the animal, maybe one day it’ll go to sleep.
