The Hobbit quotes the Trilogy (part 2/?)

It’s an extended scene from the Two Towers, but Sam says the line while in Emyn Muil, Dori says it after arriving in Beorn’s house in the Desolation of Smaug. Not only is the line exactly the same in both films, but the diction is so specific that it really stands out as being borrowed to my mind.

The Hobbit quotes the Trilogy (part 1/?) Gimli says the line outside the walls of Moria in FotR, Gandalf says it in Bag End at the start of An Unexpected Journey. There are so many other ways to say the same thing that the exact word choice has to be intentional.

Hey guys! I’ve just finished my masters degree and I have a lot of spare time on my hands so I’ve decided to embark upon a project that has been on my mind ever since the first Hobbit film was released, namely the creation of gif sets that highlight the amount of dialogue from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy that is reused in The Hobbit films. I am by no means skilled at making gifs so bear with me and hopefully it’ll improve as we go. Stay tuned to share in my annoyance!

Bilbo’s final ‘riddle’ that’s really more of a question that Gollum would have no way of knowing has a precedent in medieval Germanic literature. The Icelandic saga Hervarar saga ok Heidrek’s contains a riddle contest between the king Heidrek and a disguised Odin. The final riddle of the contest is posed by Odin and isn’t a riddle at all but the unanswerable question “What said Odin in the ear of Baldr?” Odin is known to have whispered something into the ear of a dead Baldr and so what was said is known to Odin alone, just as only Bilbo knows what is in his own pocket.
