We all know about the DDOS attacks on AO3 as it is still down. So it is very important we talk about the KOSA(Kids Online Safety Act) that is going to hit the floor soon. Because if that act goes through this could very much be the new reality of not only AO3 but online fandom spaces within the next year. The point of this act is to limit queer media and to eliminate online queer spaces.
Let me stress, the politicians are lying to you. Democrats and Republicans are lobbying for this. It is not pro trans rights and it is not pro lgbtq rights. This is very reminiscent of the Restrict Act! Politicians can SUE websites for having QEEER CONTENT. This act will not protect kids, it will further separate and marginalize the queer community!
If this bill goes through AO3, Wattpad, TikTok, Tumblr, and Twitter will be limited and fanfiction websites could be wiped out all together. If you are apart of fandom spaces pay attention and ACT! Call and email your senators! AND SIGN THE BELOW PETITIONS!
Reblog this! Send the links to people who aren’t on Tumblr! If you care about fandom, fandom spaces, your ships, your blorbos, fanfiction writers’ works, freedom to create, etc. Spread this!
If you aren’t American you can still sign/send some of these!

thinking about how amphithemis — a character meant to represent the person nico used to be — hurt nico and gave him scars — on his face, the part of the body most representative of identity.
and will healed the wounds but left the scars because he liked how they added to nico’s face and figured that nico would too
and at the end chiron asks if he needs the scars fixed and nico says no, THERE’S NOTHING TO FIX!
These scars represent nico’s trauma — his identity is literally scarred, but he likes himself the way he is and so does will!!!!!

I actually really like that it's Will who chases Amphithemis away, and Nico who gets upset because he thinks they could've helped him. As one of Camp Half-Blood's best medics in one war and head medic in a second, Will would be familiar with the concept of triage and accepting that there are some people you can't save; Nico is quick to defend his loved ones and never hesitates to kill if it comes down to it, but he doesn't have the same experience with acting as a medic during a war and having to come to terms with the fact that you can't heal everyone. It actually makes a lot of sense that it would be Will who says "No, there's nothing we can do about this, we have to focus on Bob because we can save him and we can't waste time when we don't know how much we have" and Nico who tries to insist on helping Amphithemis despite having zero idea of how to do that, because that fits with how the two of them view the concept of helping people in a situation with no enemy to fight directly.
I also really love it because so much of the fanon for these two is that Nico is always the ruthless one and Will is always the sweet sunshine "gotta save everyone" one, and that... doesn't actually fit them at all. I mean, Will served as a medic in two wars that both had casualties; it tears him apart that he can't save everyone (Will thinking that every person he's failed to save is a death he caused breaks my heart), but he would've had to learn very fast that if you waste time on people you can't save that could easily mean dooming people you can. Nico can be ruthless, the lesson the wars taught him was that he had to be prepared to kill his enemies if he wanted to save his friends, but Will learned that he couldn't save all his friends and there would be times when he'd have to choose to let go of one he couldn't save in order to save another he could. I feel like in some ways these two are probably two of the most pragmatic and ruthless characters in the series, because both of them learned in different ways that sometimes you have to kill people or let them die, which is a lesson that for the most part none of the others ever really have to take on; even with Luke it's ultimately his choice, not Percy and Annabeth's, and otherwise the cast mostly just kill monsters and the occasional resurrected human who they tend to view as basically like monsters since they should be dead anyway. In the case of Amphithemis it falls under the "sometimes you have to let people die to focus on the ones you can save" lesson that Will learned rather than the "sometimes you have to kill people to protect your loved ones" lesson that Nico learned, so it makes a lot of sense that it's Will who chases Amphithemis off so they can continue their quest and Nico who gets upset because they could've stayed with him and tried to help, just like how it makes sense that it's Nico who ultimately makes the choice to let Octavian yeet himself and Will who's against it (and much like Will feeling intense guilt every time he fails to save someone even when he knows there was nothing he could do, Nico is still dwelling on his choice with Octavian over a year later despite knowing it had to be done). Nico's a fighter and Will's a healer; that doesn't mean Nico can never be idealistic in his desire to save people or that Will can never decide that a death is necessary, it just means they're coming at the question of when people should be helped, killed, or left on their own from different angles. The way Nico and Will complement each other was really fantastically done in a lot of ways.

I'm seeing all the hate The Sun & The Star is getting on this hellsite and its so obvious that people aren't reading this book for what it is.
It's literally a children's novel written for children. The book is supposed to be easily digestible and stupid and explicitly written because kids books are supposed to be completely laid out.
Rick has always written dorky things in his books but he has also prioritized writing about real world issues and struggles. He's written about trauma, abuse, PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc. For years.
So here he is writing about deep rooted insecurities and self-doubt and learning to accept all those dark parts of yourself as well as others, AND tackling internalized homophobia and queer struggles, and we're upset the book is too focused on the relationship?
The entire point of this book is to teach the audience how to navigate a rocky relationship with compassion and understanding. It's showing that relationships aren't perfect, you can be upset with your partner and your partner can be upset with you but the point is that you talk about it and you try to do better.
Is it such a bad thing for young teens to be learning this?
Is it such a bad thing for them to see that love is effort? And can and will be flawed and that's okay??
This is the first time we've seen this topic discussed by Rick and I've never seen a book tackle this topic because we always see the Hollywood depiction of love---yet that's unrealistic.
This is showing that love can be flawed but still be oh so beautiful. That you can be traumatized and still worthy of love.
And I am so proud of Rick and Mark for not only showing a healthy attempt at a relationship but also showing countless times that those lessons apply to any relationship. They put significant stress on platonic and familial relationships and how that love is also effort, compassion, and understanding.
Yes, it focused on Solangelo a lot.
Yes, it had soooo many flaws that even I cringed and got disappointed at times.
But the fact that we got a book that finally lets two characters talk about their feelings is incredible, and the fact that this new generation gets this book??
If I had a book like this when I was young, showing me how to navigate conflict and that relationships CAN be hard?? My god, the healing that lesson could have done.
Perspective is everything for this book. Hell, perspective was everything in HoO. It showed that how characters are perceived is very different from how they perceive themselves.
Leo was literally always shown as comedic relief and nothing more until we saw how incredibly lonely and sad that kid was from his point of view.
Percy was always said to be intimidating and powerful, but in his perspective, he's a kid who has no clue what he's doing.
So yea, in this book, it may seem like these characters have shifted, but once again, Rick is relying so heavily on perspective.
Nico was edgy and depressed for as long as we knew him, even in BoO when we first got his POV. But now that he's accepted, loved, and healing, why are we getting mad that he's a dork again---how he was before all the trauma? Why are we mad that Nico is growing and healing and becoming himself again because he feels safe enough to do so.
Ofc he's gonna feel different than how he was written a canon year ago.
And this is the first time we've had Wills perspective. He's always been seen as this sunshine happy character but we FINALLY get some acknowledgement that he's deeply terrified. He's shown as a leader and camp counselor but he's got anxiety written in his bones.
He felt like a burden this book because he's a healer. He's absolutely terrified to be a fighter and yet we got to see him become one in his own way. He was out of his element but he was trying.
Because he's so goddamn afraid of losing someone else.
Call Will an asshole all you want, but Nico had been to Tartarus and the Underworld more times than he could count.
Will is literally walking into a place he's never been to before and is the complete opposite of anything he's ever known---for Nico. The comments he makes about plants and lack of sunshine? It wasn't him being a dick, he was him being genuinely confused because hes only ever known earth logic.
If I saw flowers blooming in a pitch black room I'd be a little confused too. He says the Underworld is depressing because it's literally draining his energy.
You yell at Will for not being open-minded yet won't comment on the fact that Nico hardly made an attempt either. Nico could have been more understanding about the fact that Will, a guy who's exploring this place that's slowly killing him, might not like the place at first because he doesn't understand it.
Because Will wanted to understand.
And the second Will finally began to understand the beauty of the Underworld, he was nothing but supportive.
You get mad at Will for making mistakes yet refuse to acknowledge that he learned from them.
The Sun & The Star tackled a hard topic that doesn't get talked about often. It portrayed a queer relationship and it emphasized characters who learned and grew. It's different from other Rick books because that was the point. (And it wasn't just Rick writing it)
This book was about accepting change within yourself and "daring to be different."
And the fact that you can't even accept a book that does the same just shows that the lessons this book taught went straight over your head.
I've never been more disappointed in this fandom. We begged for this book. We begged for queer representation. Yet here we are criticizing every little thing about it as if we aren't lucky to be getting this book in the first place---a book about two side characters.
This book had soooo many flaws but it wasn't a bad book.
Isn't that the point of it all? To love something even though it's flawed? That flaws dont necessarily mean it's broken and bad forever?
It's okay to hate a book.
That doesn't mean it's a bad book.
It just wasn't for you.
There are dozens of other books in this fandom to love and cherish, but don't hate this book just because it's different from what we're used to.

This is what I was talking about.
Tumblr media
This is exactly why the whole "Queer characters can only be played by queer actors" argument, or the queerbaiting celebrities argument is not only unhelpful, it is actively harmful. You are not entitled to other peoples identity. You are forcing people to come out in order to protect their careers, when they may not have wanted to share that with the world. Real people can not queerbait. Real people can not be bad representations of themselves. Do not conflate how you treat fictional characters with how you are allowed to treat real people. We can not keep having the same conversation. Forcing people to come out or else face social consequences is Bad. Always. Everytime.
In this case, Kit is literally a teenager who has been facing overwhelming amounts of online abuse for not being open about his personal identity.
Im seeing it with other queer media too. With nicholas galitzin and taylor zakhar perez in the red white & royal blue movie, people demanding that they should have been recast with "actual queer actors" despite the fact that we do not know if they are or are not queer. We can never know until they tell us that they are, which they have not.
Im also seeing it with young royals. With the new season coming out later today, the speculation on omar and edvins sexuality and relationship is incredibly harmful and toxic. They are real people, please treat them like people instead of fictional characters you can write rambling, speculating paragraphs about.
I'll say it one more time.
You are not entitled to other people's identities.

One of my fav Will hcs is that he really isnt that cool with Percy
"oh because Nico had a crush on him?" Nah, Will doesnt give one single fuck about that.
He dislikes him because of what happened to his brother, Micheal. But the whole thing is such a weird thing to Will because his feelings about it are so complex. He doesnt think Percy its completely at fault, rationally. It was a war, and in a war people die. Micheal knew what was coming.
But at the same time he cant help but think how unfair things were. He cant help but think that “what even is the life of an Apollo camper when Annabeth Chase is injured”. He feels like his brothers life was unimportant compared to the one of someone elses. Not enought important to even let him, his brother, search for his body.
Not only Will couldnt help look for him, but he also had to leave his other sibilings -who he had just become responsable of- alone, looking for the corpse of the person that before battle hugged them tight, and gave them a little punch and reassured them, giving them the strenght they needed to make it.
He finds it unfair because maybe, just maybe, Micheal was still alive, and Will couldve helped him.
He finds it unfair because he was just 13.
He finds it unfair because, thanks to Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase gets to live but his brother doesnt.
He finds it unfair because right after he saved Annabeth's life her and Percy started their silly romantic conversation like nothing has happened. Like his brother wasnt possibly rotting under rubble.
He finds it unfair, and he hates himself because of it. Because, at the same time, what shouldve Percy do? Let both Annabeth and Micheal die? Annabeth, the brain of the camp, one of Wills closer friends.
He gets that it wasnt Percy making things unfair. It was the war. He really does.
He gets that Percy was just trying to do the right thing.
But he just cant help but feel resentfull towards the boy. And he feels so immature because of it.
