It’s hard to talk about days that change the trajectory of your life. When you’d heard about people who get hit by cars, or who are diagnosed with cancer, all you wanted to do was ask them every question that crossed your neuropathways. Did you know? What did you do after? What did your loved ones do? How did you handle it? How did it change you?
You don’t ask them that anymore. They probably all had different experiences from you, but truthfully, you don’t want to know. You don’t think you can carry more grief inside of you, as you attempt to grapple with both your own and Kate’s. Handling someone else’s feelings seems truly unmanageable as you try to balance everything on your own shoulders.
Truthfully, you don’t even remember much. The beach day you had planned was a spur-of-the-moment decision – the weather was nice, she had the day off, and you hadn’t been to the water in months. It seemed like a great way to spend the day, cooling off from the unforgiving East Coast heatwave that had forced you both to be stuck inside in the air conditioning whenever possible. You knew the beach would be crowded, so she suggested a more secluded beach a friend of hers had access to.
It happened quickly, too. One second she was running towards the waves, the next you see her body floating in the water.  It’s hard to remember what happened after – a flurry of animalistic screams and pulling her ashore, supporting her head with a towel like you’d learned in high school gym class while you frantically called 911.
Through explaining the accident to the operator, Kate only whispered one thing. “I-“
“What is it, baby?” you pressed your phone to your cheek with your shoulder as you held her face with trembling hands. “What is it?”
“I can’t move.”

You hate Avenger’s Tower. You haven’t always hated it as much as you do now, but as everyone passes you with a distinct look of pity in your eyes…yeah, you’ve come to despise this place more than your first college apartment, where your roommates were a Republican, two rats who you were never able to catch, and a spider whose web you couldn’t reach.
When you finally reach the medical wing and duck into the examination room, you’re ready to collapse. Unfortunately, Bruce is there – always impeccably on time – and holds out his hand for the x-rays scans he requested from the hospital.
He pops them onto the lightboard he’s already turned on, sighing as soon as he sees the fracture in your girlfriend’s neck. Neither of you says anything – you, numb to small talk and him, focusing on the images in front of him. He has the same look all the other doctors did in the hospital, the same ones your friends in medical school had when you showed them the scans.
There was no hope in any of their eyes, and certainly isn’t any in Bruce’s either.
“It’s bad,” he says simply. “It’s very bad.”
Yeah, you want to tell him. I can fucking see that, you imbecile. You resist the urge to say it aloud, desperate not to lock anyone else into your misery.
“She’s broken her C4 vertebrae,” Bruce pauses to switch to a different view, the two scans sitting side by side. “The hospital didn’t lie to you. This a serious injury, it’s likely she’ll never walk again or regain full use of her limbs.”
Your ears ring as if you’re in the center of a marching band, or in the pit of a concert without earplugs on. If this were any other time you’re sure you’d be curled up into a ball on the ground, sticking your fingers so far into your ears they bleed. Now, though, the old numbness washing over your body keeps you inert. “But the doctors said-“
“The doctors aren’t lying to you,” Bruce sighs. You can tell this hurts to say as much as it hurts to ear. “Mathematically, Kate might regain some use of her limbs. But what you’re hoping for is a miracle that doctors can’t control.”
You can feel tears streaming down your cheeks, long rivers of them flowing down your face and pooling at the collar of your shirts. You don’t try to wipe them away.
“I’m sorry,” is all Bruce says after a long while of you both standing there, staring at the sharp image on the light board. “I’m so sorry.”
Another long, silent pause as you both avoid the other’s gaze. Bruce only says something when his pager goes off – the ancient device one he makes everyone in the lab use because he has to keep his phone on silent or else he’ll keep breaking them (not that they don’t get smashed every few weeks, but it’s better than every few days). “I know an excellent team specializing in spinal cord injuries in a hospital upstate. The odds still aren’t great,” he winces, the phrasing too blunt. Bruce has never been the most socially eloquent man, and it’s never more obvious than when he’s in situations like this one. “They’re better. The odds are better than if she stays where she is.”
It's times like this you wish you had a baseball bat. A steel one. Kate bought you one when you first met, when she came to your apartment building because the bar had kicked you out for being too loud. The building had no security – owned by a landlord shitty enough to rent to you on a grad students salary. It wasn’t much, but it was home for you.
Kate didn’t buy that argument, taking one look at the lack of doorman and hand-delivering you a moving box full of self-defense gear the next night, just as you got home from teaching.
“This is for you,” she told you, watching as you pulled everything out and laid it on the dining room table you got from an alley a block away. “I, uh, got it from work.”
She didn’t tell you about being Hawkeye until the fifth date. It all made more sense then.
“From…work?” You’re not sure what to say. Kate moves her weight from one foot to the other, rocking back and forth as you finally empty the box. It looks as if you emptied your inventory after a 13-hour Call of Duty marathon; box cutters, grips for your hands that made you look like Wolverine, noise makers, knives of at least five different sizes, locks to install in your front and bedroom doors, ten different cans of pepper spray with keychains…and a baseball bat. “You got this all from your work?”
Kate shrugs, looking at the ground. “Yeah, they, uh…they let us have access to the extra stuff. Can take as much as I want.”
You’re not sure what to say. You don’t have a large breadth (or depth) in dating experiences – being queer in STEM kept you extremely limited in your options. Still, you’re not sure many of your friends from back home ever had their dates bring them…stuff like this.
But you look at Kate – wide-eyed, nervous, trying her best. And all you can do is gather her in a hug. “Thank you.”
It took a second for Kate to return the favor, wrapping her arms around you. “Any time.”
That feels like years ago, when you know it’s barely been six months. It hurts more when you think about how little time has passed between then and now.
You wish you had that bat on you now, so that you could destroy everything and make it look like how you felt. The room Bruce pulled you into is the same sterile white as every other hospital you’ve been to, a horrible nostalgia crawling up your throat as you look around. It’s hard to resist the urge to claw at the walls until you’re leaving trails of blood, leaving graffiti depicting your grief where everyone can see it. You wish security would drag you away so you could kick and scream and wail, forcing your pain upon anyone who would listen.
You don’t, though. You’re not in much of a position to be causing trouble, especially in the Tower owned by the man paying for all of this. Instead of allowing yourself space to have a total and complete mental breakdown, you swallow the rock in your throat and try to act as normal as possible.
“What are the odds, exactly?” You try not to let the tears welling in your ducts spill over your cheeks. Bruce sighs, and you cut him off before you can begin. “I want the before and the after.”
The man leans against the table you stand in front of, becoming hunched over. “Before, you’re looking at less than a percent. Maybe less. After? About two or three percent.”
“And that’s fully recovered?”
Bruce shakes his head. “With Kate’s injuries, she’s more likely to sprout wings than she is to make a total recovery. Even if she walks again, you’re looking at a limited range of motion in the hands, neck, feet, legs, and arms – anything below the injury site. There could be secondary complications like bladder and bowel issues and issues with swallowing, coughing, or sneezing. Issues with sleeping, issues with the diaphragm. Those numbers are what a good, quality life would look like with continued assistance and medical care.”
He answers a few more of your questions, awkwardly pats your shoulder, and tells you to contact him if you have any more questions. It’s you who exits first, terrified to be alone. When you leave Stark Tower you feel as if you’re a puppet, controlled by someone behind a large pane of glass hitting buttons to move your legs. Kate’s always tried to protect you, take care of you. Even when you resisted, she pushed until you let her. For a long while, it was her job. Now, as you look down on the worst thing that’s happened to either of you…it’s your job to take care of her.
Tumblr media
Your hands shake ever so slightly as you sit down across from the primary doctor on Kate’s team, the older man blinking slowly as you try to hide them under in your lap.
“I want to transfer her,” you tell him after what feels like hours of silence. “To this hospital so she can be treated there.”
You give him the thick stack of papers Bruce had emailed you, filled with information you didn’t understand but desperately wanted to. The doctor’s face doesn’t change – a perplexing response. Bruce had mentioned that doctors occasionally got cagey and upset when you wanted to transfer patients, even if they truly were not the right person to be treating them.
He doesn’t even flinch, though, when he flips to the graphs displaying differing outcomes of SCI patients in this hospital versus the one you wanted to move Kate to. His affect is just as flat as ever, face weathered with age.
“Is this what you want?” He asks once he’s read the final page, a letter written by Bruce on Stark stationary.
You wring your hands under the table, out of eyeshot from the older man. “Yes.”
The doctor nods, folding the papers back and pushing them towards you. “It’ll take a few days for the communications to go through and for the paperwork to process. I assume you know she’ll have to be airlifted, and that you won’t be able to ride with her. If you need a place to stay, I have some recommendations, and I’ll keep in touch to make sure Kate is recovering properly.”
You feel light-headed as you take the papers back, dropping them into your tote bag. You expected a fight, some large verbal spar that ended in security being called. It’s been a long, long time since you heard good news, and as you make your way to Kate’s hospital room     it’s nearly impossible to sort your scattered, albeit happy, thoughts.
When you arrive you watch her through the glass, the black grid embedded in the glass as hazy as your thoughts. The Kate in front of you is unfamiliar; a poor reproduction of the woman you watched go under the water. Part of you wonders if this is some Avengers bullshit, a hologram to test your resolve or something else equally stupid. At any moment, Stark could walk through some door you didn’t realize was there to tell you this was all some elaborate lie.
When you look at all the doors, though, all you see are nurses and doctors in scrubs walking quickly into other doors that look the same as the ones they exited from. It feels like a horrible ouroboros, and you’re stuck in the center of the snake.
A nurse, one with kind eyes – the genuine kind, not the fake sort of sympathy you’ve gotten from friends on Facebook you haven’t talked to since graduating high school – is the one to speak to you first. Speak to you not just as one close to the patient, or her medical power of attorney, or to ask if you could move out of the way so the doctors could draw blood for more tests. She speaks to you as a family member of the patient, as someone who wishes to see the both of you live to old age.
“Honey,” she starts, voice soft. It still startles you. “We need to talk about getting a care team together.”
You follow her through one of those Godforsaken doors into her office. It’s nice, full of Target interior décor that makes you feel safe.
That’s important because the list of people needed on the care team overwhelms you. Physical therapists, nurses, people to help keep the apartment clean, pharmacists, psychiatrists, therapists, surgeons, and orthopedic doctors. You feel as though it’s easier to omit the kind of help you won’t need than the help you do.
“This is a lot,” is all you can say. “It’s, um, more than I thought. I guess.”
The nurse nods, moving the chair to sit ever so closer to you even as you sit across the table. “Ms. Bishop’s injuries are very serious, and given your financial position Mr. Stark and I agreed to spare no expense. We want Kate to have the best recovery outcomes possible.”
It’s not as if you disagreed with her, and so you let her talk you through what quickly becomes a complicated web of care.
As she does, you pick at the end of your sleeves, the sweatshirt one Kate got you when she came to visit you at your campus for the first time. Unlike all your other dates, her bewilderment at your graduate degree in applied mathematics came from a place of wonder rather than disgust. It was refreshing, to explain your research to her. When you talked about being holed up in your office for most of the day, she offered to come visit you to help break up the day. That morning you had asked her to bring a sweatshirt for you to borrow – the cool late September air battling with the air conditioner you couldn’t control. She had arrived with a dopey smile you couldn’t place, dropping a bad from the grossly overpriced university bookstore onto your messy desk.
“I kinda forgot the sweatshirt,” she said, chewing at her bottom lip. “Didn’t realize until I got off the train, though, and I felt bad. And you mentioned you don’t own a lot of university school spirit stuff so, uh…”
She watched, tentatively, as you pulled the maroon and white hoodie from the bag. It’s a size too big and lined with fleece.
You drop it to pull her into a hug, kissing her temple. “It’s perfect. Thank you.”
The sweatshirt is well worn now, with pilling inside the armpits. It’s greater comfort to you now, though, than anything else in the universe.
“And that’ll be the team we see when we go to the new hospital?” You’re unsure of how much the nurse knows about Kate’s transfer.
“Yes,” she assures you. “This is both for inpatient and outpatient care.”
You look at the long list again and your stomach turns. “Can I, uh,” you feel like a child asking to use the restroom during class. “Can I go see her now?”
The nurse nods, gathering the papers into a neat pile. “Of course, dear. Just come find me when you need me.”
You leave without saying anything else, giving her a curt nod. You try to shove any thoughts about the future deep, deep down into your consciousness, navigating to Kate’s room with ease.
The nurse checking her vitals makes room for you at her bedside, sitting in the chair you requested as always there for you. You’d ask how Kate is but…her face says it all.
“What are you thinking about, babe?” You ask, pushing a lock of hair back that had fallen in her face. She leans into your touch for just a moment before sighing just a little.
Her eyes narrow, setting her jaw in the same way she always did when she thought she was right. “I’m going to walk again.”
Your body doesn’t feel your own as you sit there, gripping the gritty hospital sheets as you fight the urge to reach for her hand. “K-“
It’s hard not to sob when she closes her eyes, looking ever so slightly away from you.
“No,” she repeats. “I’m going to walk again.”
“Okay,” is all you say back.
She, luckily, takes the news of her being transferred in stride once you explain what Bruce told you. It’s certainly not easy on her, but you’re there at every step you can as she moves through inpatient treatment.
Tony hires someone, luckily, to deal with insurance. The first call you tried to do on your own, but after two hours on hold, you threw the phone out the window and had to email Tony to buy you a new one. It was cheaper for him, and better for you, to hire a personal assistant just to coordinate with them.
The same person contacted your advisor, putting in the paperwork to request a sabbatical and dealing with the fallout from your PI.
The same person booked you an Airbnb to stay in while upstate.
The same person notified you when Kate secured a release into an outpatient.
After that call, time goes by both miserably fast and torturously slow. Movers and appliance techs are in daily to try and make the apartment more accessible, an accessibility expert measures hallways and hands you stacks of recommendations. A therapist makes house calls twice a week to help prepare you for her arrival, walking you through coping mechanisms and communication skills and everything else you apparently need.
Nothing, though, could’ve prepared you for what life would be like once she came home.
It was easy for you to forget how much Kate did before her accident. Being a superhero didn’t leave much time for anything else, but it’s easy to see how the little she was able to do added up over time. As you try to take care of her, to feed her and care for her and try not to let her see that you’re slowly cracking under the pressure, you become overwhelmed quickly. Dishes, laundry, and trash pile up faster. She usually carried the latter two up and down the stairs because of her strength, but now you had to struggle to balance the weight of it while not falling down the stairs. Dust settled in corners and on the knick-knacks she collected while on jobs. The fridge was mostly empty, same as the cabinets that squeaked every time you opened them (she had promised to fix them about a week before her accident, but certainly couldn’t get to it now). Every day at least three other people crammed themselves into your apartment – cleaning, doing physical therapy, moving her in and out of her chair.
There are times, though, when everyone else is cleared out, and you can see glimpses of beloved normalcy. Tonight is one of those nights, where you order take out and the last caretaker of the night, a chair tech, is scheduled to leave right at five.
As he does, the door clicks shut without preamble, the blessed silence from just the two of you without anyone else in your home. You’d forgotten how nice it was when it was just you and her without anyone else bustling around the house. You’ve always been introverted, aloneness your preferred state of being. It was easy to find an exception with Kate, in her arms, in her bed. Now, though, being alone together feels rare a precious resource as fresh, cold water in a desert.
You feed Kate bites of food between feeding yourself, talking about anything besides how things had changed. Ms. Santiago on the fifth floor still drops off baked goods with no warning, and the guy at the corner store still gives you a discount on your morning bagel sandwiches. You mention the neighbor next to you still has that horrible yappy dog, she jokes that the downstairs neighbors must think they’ve got a really large Labrador now.
You let out a snort, feeding her a bit of broccoli (because many, many things transformed, but Kate’s aversion to vegetables had stayed the same). “More like a Newfoundland.”
Kate laughs at that, and you can’t hide how nice it is to see her happy. You missed this.
“What?” Kate asks, mouth still full. That’s another thing that hasn’t changed.
You didn’t realize you had said it aloud, your face heating from embarrassment. ”Nothing, just…” you try to find the words. “It’s nice to see you happy. It’s been a long time and I’ve missed it.”
“I’ve missed you,” Kate says back. She avoids your gaze, looking at the nearly full plate of food in front of her instead.
You can practically hear your heart break into pieces, shattering on the floor like a chandelier cut from the ceiling by a shitty repair man.
“I-“ a boulder forms in your throat, a pearl only in process. “I’m right here, baby.”
Kate’s face scrunches up, and you can see tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. In a reflex older than her injury, you go to wipe her face for her with the cuff of your sweatshirt. (It’s actually her sweatshirt, but neither of you mentions that.) “I’m sorry,” she murmurs, still not meeting your gaze. “I’m sorry, I-“
You get up, then, in a move you don’t know is happening until it’s happening. Moving her plate to the side, you hug her as well as you can in her chair, making sure to press your face to hers. “It’s okay, baby. It’s all okay.”
You hold her close like that until the food gets cold, until the sun has set outside your large living room window and darkness has blanketed the dining room. Only then, in the comfort of low light, do you return to your seat.
“I hope you know I’m not upset with you,” your voice is small, soft, as you try not to cry. It’s hard to meet her gaze, but you know without physical touch there’s only one way to make sure she knows you’re serious. “I know this is a lot, and neither of us were really…prepared. I mean, I don’t think anyone is, it’s not like life is like ‘hey, be tee dubs, someone in your life is about to suffer a life-changing, permanent injury that-‘“
Kate cracks a smile that’s small but infectious. You keep going.
“That, you know, is going to change your life forever. No one also gets a notification that the girl they met are an Avenger either, though, so I guess life is just full of surprises we can’t prepare for.”
Your girlfriend gives a snort, rolling her eyes as she grins. “Hey, no one told me that my partner would be a mathematician when I failed high school algebra three times.”
You shrug, giggling. “So what I guess I’m saying is…we’re even?”
Kate rolls her eyes, obviously biding time to come up with her own sarcastic quip. You stop her, though, as you speak again.
“But…seriously,” you reach out to cup her face with one hand. “We’re both here just figuring it out. You’re allowed to have emotions and shit, and tell me if you need something, or want something, even if it seems kind of out there. I’ll always do my best to give it to you, okay?”
Kate nods, leaning into your touch. She’s thinking, obviously, chewing on her bottom lip like she does when she’s formulating a plan. You choose not to comment on it, knowing she’ll tell you when she’s ready. “Okay, babe. I love you.”
You smile, leaning to kiss her once more. “I love you, too. Now, help me finish this, I really don’t feel like dealing with leftovers.”
Tumblr media
Kate’s confession comes in the middle of the night, when you’re both reading (you, a physical copy of a medieval romance novel; Kate, using a mouth clicker and a Kindle you attached to an adjustable arm that clips onto the headboard to read some mystery novel you’re sure was written for old, retired white men who sit on porches all day). It’s dark except for a small booklight you’re using, the darkness more comforting than the brutal, New York sun that streams through your windows during the day.
“I want to have sex again,” Kate says, the words muffled a bit by the clicker in her mouth. She doesn’t look at you. You resist the urge to look at her.
“I thought the doctors said you couldn’t feel anything below the shoulders,” is all you can think to say back. It’s hard for you to admit, but you desperately miss it too – the physical intimacy, the closeness, touching her. You were touch-starved when you met her, and your hunger had only grown in the short time you’d known her.
Kate just gives you a small smile, the one you recognize from way too many sexual escapades in way too many shady places. “Can still feel above the shoulders, though. That’s gotta count for something.”
You smile, leaning over to kiss her temple. “Yeah, it should.”
It’s hard to tear yourself away from her, so you don’t. You lay there with her until morning, taking special care not to put too much pressure on her limbs as you curl up into her.
Tumblr media
The Internet, although sometimes a hideous cesspool, provides you with way more information than you thought possible. Reddit threads, message boards, support groups, articles, blogs, studies. You read every word, your time without your dissertation dedicated to using the same software to catalogue and sort everything you can find. You only stop when you’ve reached forums from the late 1990s, in all of their horribly pixelated glory.
Only then do feel secure enough to tell Kate what you’ve found, finding another time in the caretakers’ schedules do that you’re alone – finally blissfully alone – for hours and hours. Time for you to strip her down so that she’s completely naked in the center of the bed. A mix of old and new scars pepper her body, her upper half propped up with a smattering of pillows. You don’t resist the urge to trace them, her eyes following as you work your way up to her collarbones.
You kiss up her neck, your hands kneading into her shoulders.
“That feel good?” you ask, watching every move she makes for any sign of discomfort. All you see, though, are her eyes scrunched shut. A good sign.
“Mmhmm,” she replies, the affirmation long and drawn out. It feels as though you’re letting steam out from a pressurized container, slowly and carefully allowing everything pent up inside of her to release. It’s hard for you to take your time, your brain screaming about how badly you want to fuck her, and be fucked in return.
You trample it down until only a desire to please her remains, your hands moving so that your nails drag across her scalp. You focus on her breathing, noticing when certain spots make her breath hitch.
Her moans are beautifully familiar, breathy and music-like as you bite across her jugular. Her skin is soft, and smells just like the moisturizer you bought her for your birthday a few months prior. The memory makes you smile – you, her, Hawkeye, Lucky, Yelena all eating the largest sheet cake you could find while they dared each to do increasingly dangerous (and stupid-looking) trick shots with throwing knives.
“That feel good?” you ask as you cradle both sides of her head, rubbing into her temples and at the back of her neck.
“Y-yes,” Kate hisses out, her teeth digging into her bottom lip. “Oh shit-“
You grin as you suck bruises into her neck, scraping your teeth over the supple skin before biting in another location. The contortion of your body is a little awkward, but, truthfully, you’d bend yourself into whatever type of knot Kate wanted as long as you got to hear those sounds again.
“Talk to me, my lovely baby,” you coo into her ear. “Tell me how it feels.”
“F-fuck you,” she tries to sound threatening, but her moans make her sound more harlot than villain. “Shit, you know that feels fucking amazing.”
You just grin, continuing your ministrations. You know she’s close, you can hear it as her moans become higher pitched.
“Yes, my love,” you moan, too, even though you remain untouched. “Yes, please, come for me…come for me, I know you can.”
And, to her own testament, she does.
It’s different from before, watching her reach her peak. She was always uncontrollable, thrashing in bed unless you tied her down. Even then, she’d fight against the ropes, ones you had to special order because of her strength. Now she’s more subdued, focused, her moans breathy and loud where before there were guttural screams you’d always worried would garner you both a noise complaint.
She’s still the most gorgeous woman you’ve ever seen, though, her dark hair splayed out around her on the pillow and her face flushed. You wish you could tear yourself away to take a picture, but all you can do is stare.
You wait as her breathing evens out, her heartbeat slowing to a more appropriate pace and she comes down from her high. You push your faces together like cats, then, smushing your cheeks against one another.
“I love you,” you say, finally.
Kate just gives you a dopey smile. “I love you, too. Now, can we do that again?”
All you can do is laugh and kiss her until your lungs are screaming. “We can do that as many times as you’d like.”

Wrong Cards
Summary: on a fateful day, Chris meets you.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Teen!Reader
Warning: angsty, death, gun violence, blood, shitty childhood.
Tumblr media
You haven’t had the easiest life. In all your 14 years on this earth, it’s been hell. You’ve been on the streets. You’ve been moved around all over the country and put into homes only to be shooed away. It became very apparent that nobody wanted you or cared. Not even teachers. You’ve dealt with abuse, bullying, pretty much any nasty thing that a kid shouldn’t have to deal with. A kid should be loved and wanted and taken care of but it seemed like you ended up with the short straw way too many times. Until you met Chris.
It was dark all around except for the parking lot light. You and Issac had gotten into a scuffle by these gangsters— wannabe gangsters. Punches were thrown along with threats. Then a gun went off. He was this 12 year old you met— he lost his home and his abusive parents. You were looking out for him. You had gotten in front of him and took the hits and beatings. But Issac took the bullet.
Chris heard your crying and calling out for help. He ran. He pulled out his phone and came around a truck to see the scene. Your hands are covered in blood as you’re doing chest compressions on your dying friend. He can tell that you’re way too young and Issac is way too young to be shot. You’re just kids.
“Help! Please!” You begged.
Chris dials 9-1-1 and presses call. He pulls off his scarf and gets on his knees. He puts his scarf over the wound that oozes blood. He holds it down with one hand while the other holds his phone and he already feels the warm blood soak through the fabric.
“911, what’s your emergency?” The operator asked.
“A- A kid’s been shot,” Chris said as calmly as he could for you. “He’s losing a lot of blood. You gotta hurry.”
“Where are you, sir? And is the shooter still around?”
Chris gives the street and said, “I don’t know. Probably.”
He’s told to stay on the line so he puts the phone on speaker and puts it on the ground. Chris can see that you’re struggling.
“Switch with me, kid,” Chris said.
You looked up at him with a quiver of the lip. You nod and it’s a quick switch. He’s doing chest compressions and you’re applying pressure to the wound.
“What happened?” Chris asked.
“I- I can’t tell y-you,” you said.
You both hear the sirens of the cop cars and the ambulance. He looks at you to see your own face has been beaten. Your bottom lip is slit and bleeding. You have a cut over your right eye brow and it’s also bleeding. Your cheek is starting to bruise already.
“What happened?” Chris asked.
You kept your mouth shut. The ambulance rolls into the parking lot following a cop car. The paramedics rushed over. The cops immediately asked where the shooter is and you pointed the way to them. They head off and the paramedics take over. Chris has to pull you away from Issac. More cops show up.
“No pulse,” one of the paramedics said. “Shocking to 200. —Clear.”
You clenched your jaw tightly as you watched them try to bring your friend back alive. A cop is trying to talk to you. You haven’t slept in days. You haven’t had a proper meal in months. You don’t even know what day it is. And you’re numb.
“He’s gone,” are the words that you hear.
You screamed and cried. Chris stops you. He can’t believe the situation he’s in at the moment. He doesn’t know you at all. He doesn’t know the kid that’s dead on the wet asphalt of the parking lot. He just wraps his arms around you. You fight against him but you’re weak. You’re not that strong and Chris is an adult who religiously works out.
“Stop, stop,” Chris said. “He’s gone.”
You cried harder and managed to put all your strength into clutching onto Chris. He’s keeping you on your feet. If he wasn’t holding you, you’d be running till you have to stop and then you might be dead somewhere else.
~~~~~next day
“Y/n, you’ve got a visitor,” Andrew, a nurse, said coming into the room.
Chris Evans followed behind with a giant gift bag. You recognize him from last night. The one person who came when you called for help.
“Hey,” Chris said coming into the room. “I got you something.”
You’re left alone with the actor. He places the bag in your lap. You’re very confused. You’ve never have been given anything in these 14 plus years on this earth. It’s a first.
“Why?” You asked.
He sits down on the edge of the bed and faces you.
“Just open it,” he said.
You squinted at him. He grabs the pink tissue paper and tosses it behind himself.
“There,” Chris said. “Now, you pull out what I got for you.”
You pull out this LEGO set and Chris pulls away the now empty bag. You look at the front. It’s the Super Hero Airport Battle with Captain America, the Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, War Machine, and Antman.
“Why are they fighting?” You asked. “Superheroes don’t fight each other.”
“You haven’t seen the movie?” He asked.
You shook your head no and said, “I’ve only seen Iron Man 3.”
“Really?” He asked surprised. “Just Iron Man 3?”
“Yeah. That was when I had parents that wanted me,” you said and you looked back at the box of legos.
“What happened?” Chris asked. “If you don’t mind me asking.”
“They’re dead like Issac,” you said. “They died in a fire. The house burnt down.”
“That sucks,” Chris said looking at you.
“I know,” you said. “Now, you didn’t answer my question. Why are they fighting?”
“There’s this document called the Sokovia Accords. All these countries wanted all the superheroes to sign them,” Chris started telling you. “And make the superheroes liable for their mistakes. The governments of the countries wanted to tell the heroes where they can go help and where they can’t even if people need help.”
“That’s stupid,” you said.
“Right. It’s pretty stupid. So, Iron Man, War Machine, and a few other Avengers signed the accords but Captain America was like, ‘fuck that.’ And so the Avengers were split,” Chris said. “They had one team— Team Cap, obviously the best team and they had another one- Team Iron Man.”
“Who wins?” You asked.
“Nobody. They’re divided,” he said simply.
“All because of the government?” You asked.
“Pretty much,” Chris said.
“Thats fucked up,” you said.
“Language,” he said.
“That’s messed up!” You corrected sarcastically.
“Much better,” Chris said with a shit eating grin on his face. “Why don’t we get started on building the set?”
He pulls over the table. You sit yourself up crisscross even though there’s pain in your ribs and abdomen but you haven’t asked for any painkillers. Chris gets onto the bed more invading your space.
“Take off your shoes, you wild animal. Haven’t you learned anything?” You sassed.
He immediately takes off his shoes giving you this exaggerated annoyed look. He gets onto the bed and sits across from you crisscross. You try to pick off the tape. He lets you struggle trying to get open the box.
“What’s your favorite superhero?” Chris asked but he has a feeling that it’s Iron Man.
“Whoever can get the stupid ass box open,” you said putting the box on the table in between the two of you.
Chris chuckles and takes the box. He rips it open and tears the back wide open.
“There we go,” he said putting it on the table.
“That was obnoxious,” you said looking at him.
He just smiled cheekily. You just shook your head.
“Alright, lets get building,” Chris said rubbing his hands together.
“You sure you didn’t bring this so you could build it yourself?” You asked.
“Excuse me?! I’m helping you build it,” he said and mocked offense.
“Sure,” you said sarcastically and taking out the instruction book.
Chris rolled his eyes. He knows for a fact that he’ll come back tomorrow to visit you.
“What’s your favorite movie?” Chris asked.
“Iron Man 3,” you said opening bag one on the table.
“I know Iron Man,” he announced.
“Are you trying to impress me? Like I don’t get it. I don’t even understand why you’re here and why you’re in the bed across from me or why you’re trying to get to know me by asking questions,” you said. “Don’t you have something better to do instead of spending time with a stupid ass foster kid that nobody wants?”
“First of all, you aren’t stupid. You’re smarter than you think you are. Secondly, I want to spend time with you. I want to get to know you,” Chris said.
“No, you don’t. You just feel bad for me,” you said.
“Honestly, yeah, I do feel bad—,” he said.
“Get out,” you said without hesitation.
“Let me finish,” Chris said.
“No! Get out!” You yelled pushing the legos off the table. “I don’t need you! I don’t need your fucking pity!”
“Y/n,” Chris said.
“GET OUT!” You screamed.
He sighs and slides off the bed. He grabs his shoes and quickly puts them on.
“GET OUT!” You yelled.
Chris finally leaves. Your jaw clenched tightly and tears streamed down your cheeks.
“Dude, you literally kicked out Captain America,” Andrew said shaking his head.
“Leave me alone!” You yelled.
~~~~~next day
Chris walks into the room with a fuzzy blanket, his iPad Pro, and a bag of snacks. The LEGO set is built and off to the side on the table. You’re so far in the bed on the edge that you might fall off. You’ve also been crying. Chris puts the things he brought on a chair except the giant fuzzy blanket. He covers you with the blanket. You looked at him with your eyes red and puffy.
“I told you to get out,” you said.
“That was yesterday,” Chris said grabbing the snacks and his iPad. “Today is a new day.”
He kicks off his shoes and puts the snacks in your lap. He gets into the bed. You try pushing him off. But he’s a 38 year old man. He plants himself right next to you laying on top of the blankets.
“I do feel bad. No kid should’ve seen another kid die or be shot, Y/n,” Chris said opening up his iPad. “I don’t know what else you’ve gone through but I know that it sucked for you and it’s unfair. You should be dealing with high school drama instead but you got dealt the wrong cards, kid. It’s not fair at all.”
He looks at you to find that you have this frustrated look on your face as tears streamed down your cheeks. He puts his arm around you and pulls you into his side. You bury your face into his side and shut your eyes closed tightly. You choked out a sob. His other arm wraps around you and he holds you tightly as you cry.
“You’re gonna be alright,” he said softly. “You’ll make it through all of this.”
You continued to cry and Chris did his best to soothe and console you. He honestly doesn’t know what he’s doing. He just knows he’s gotta protect you.
“Let’s watch a movie,” Chris said as you calmed down a bit.
“W-What movie?” You asked quietly.
“I was thinking Iron Man 1,” Chris said opening his iPad back up.
“You- you have it?” You asked with your eyes lighting up.
“Yup,” he said nodding.
He opened up the collection of movies he houses on the iPad. He scrolls through until he finds it. He taps on it and plays the movie. He looks to see that you’re already entranced. It brings a smile to his face and he turns his focus back on the screen.
The two of you crashed as the credits of Iron Man 2 rolled on the screen.
“Would it be alright if I adopted you?” Chris asked when you two woke up from your impromptu nap.
“Don’t be saying shit like that if you don’t mean it,” you said immediately sitting up and looking at the actor.
“I mean it, Y/n. You don’t have to be dealing with terrible foster parents or being homeless cause it’s better than the other places you’ve been. I got room in my house,” Chris said sitting up. “I got air conditioning.”
“You’re- you’re lying. You don’t want me,” you cried.
He wrapped his arms around you and held you close. You tried your hardest to fight against his hold but he doesn’t budge.
“When have I lied to you?” Chris asked as you cried into his shoulder. “Have I lied to you since we met?”
You shook your head no and he rubbed your back.
“Then I’m not lying now. I’d like to adopt you if you let me,” Chris said.
“O-Okay,” you sniffled.
Chris smiled and pressed a kiss to the top of your head.
~~~~few weeks later
You were first greeted by a very happy Dodger. He jumped on you which freaked you out and you tensed up looking at the dog warily.
“Dodger,” Chris said grabbing Dodger by his collar.
He gently pulls Dodger away and you went back outside. He looks over his shoulder to see you descend down the porch steps. He puts down your backpack that has all you have in it and he takes Dodger outside with him.
“Dodger is very excitable. He loves people,” Chris said sitting down beside you but giving enough space in between. “Sit, Dodger.”
Dodger sits down planting his ass on Chris’ foot. Chris chuckles and pets his furry friend. He makes sure that Dodger doesn’t do anything to you.
“You okay?” Chris asked looking at you.
You shrugged your shoulders and looked away. You sniffled and tried your hardest not to cry. Chris watches as you hold yourself with your arms wrapped around yourself.
“I- I don’t w-want to get attached to him or- or you,” you whimpered with your voice trembling.
Chris slides closer and wrapped his arms around you.
“It’s okay to get attached, Y/n,” Chris said.
“B-But everyone dies!” You exclaimed looking at him with tears streaming down your cheeks. “My parents died. My sister died. My adoptive parents died. Issac is dead! He died right in front of me. Everyone I get attached to dies, Chris. You’re just gonna be one of them.”
“Yeah, I know. I’m not immortal and neither is Dodger and neither are you. Death is inevitable and you’ve dealt with it a lot. The world hasn’t been kind to you,” he said running his fingers through your hair. “You’ve lost so many people and I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.”
“Y-you don’t know that,” you said.
“You’re right. I don’t but it would be a dick move on the world’s part,” Chris said.
You let out a small laugh as he pulled you into his side more. Your arms wrapped around his torso.
“C’mon, let’s go inside,” he said.
You nodded but you don’t move. He chuckles. He stays put for a little longer and holds you.
Late Night Boredom
Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader
A/N: Again, such a cliché, but it’s cute. so 🤷🏾‍♀️ gif is not mine. I might do a part two?? isk let me know what you guys think.
Summary: Y/N is so, very bored, so she decides to go out on her balcony. Little did she know that a certain friendly neighborhood superhero catches her eye.
Warning: some suggestive content, but other than that, fluffy fluff
Word Count: 2.6k
Tumblr media
It was a late Saturday night, almost midnight and you were sure that your parents had fallen asleep. You let out something between a sigh and a groan, and rolled to the other side of your bed, phone in your hand, texting one of your friends and complaining about how utterly bored you are. They suggested that you get some fresh air, but you pushed it aside, revolted at the idea of getting up from your comfy bed.
You twisted over, now facing the TV in your room, turned it on and surfed the channels for a good ten minutes. Of course there was nothing that interested you playing, so you turned to Netflix. You had already binge-watched most of the shows, so you searched for another few moments. You let out a whine, you didn't want to watch something new or old, it was just one of those times where you were stuck in a black hole of disinterest.
Finally deciding to take your friend’s advice, you lazily throw the blanket off your body, sit up, and stretch. Then, you made your way over to your balcony doors, and pulled them open, pretending to be dramatic, like a Disney princess. Smiling at yourself, you step outside, letting the cool, New York air surround you. Making sure you closed the door behind you, you put your elbows on the chilly railing that use your hands to prop your head up.
Your eyes sweep the streets, looking for something, anything really, to help you escape your hole of boredom that you’ve somehow fallen into. Nothing gained your interest, there was only a couple, walking home from their date, you assumed, since they were holding hands and the girl was leaning on his shoulder, laughing at something he said. You decided to head back inside, since there was nothing to watch. But as you were about to step inside, you heard a scream.
Eyes widening, you did another 180°, you practically ran to the railing, and leaned over to see what the commotion was about. The woman was holding her arm out, pointing her index finger to a man that was running away, clutching a black, leather purse in his hands.
“He stole my purse!” the woman cried, a surprised expression on her face. You averted your gaze back to the thief that was getting away.
Within seconds (probably milliseconds, you thought), a certain superhero, clad in red and blue, with white eyes, outlined in black, jumped down in front of the criminal. Instantly recognizing who it was, thanks to all those youtube videos you watched and that one encounter you had with him, you relaxed.
“The time for snatching purses was an hour ago, you’re late!” he greeted the thief, making you shake your head and grin. Spider-Man extended his arm, shooting strings of web at the man, and pulled his hand back, catching the purse. He tossed the purse to its rightful owner, who had moved close to the criminal, who hadn’t noticed. The man attacked the hero, throwing a punch meant for his head, but instead hit nothing as the avenger easily dodged.
“I gotta say, you have to get a lot better at throwing punches.” he commented as the man started fighting him. He threw a few punches and kicks, which again, Spidey easily avoided. While fending him off, the superhero notice you looking.
He winked.
You were taken aback from the gesture, you could feel yourself reddening, and for some reason, your heart fluttered. You gave him a small smile in return, and headed inside. You left your balcony open just a tad bit, to let some cool air in. You decided to read a book, so you turned on your lamp and got your favourite book. Minutes had passed and all your attention was consumed by your book, until you heard a thud. Your eyes instantly shot towards your balcony, where you saw the hero from earlier, in his signature superhero pose.
As you were marking your page and setting your book down, a quizzical expression took over your features. You strolled to the doors and pushed them open, eyeing him curiously. The eyes on his mask slightly widened, but went back to normal again at once.
“What’s a pretty lady like you doing up so late?” he asked with a New York accent. Extending his arm, he held out his hand. Deciding to trust him, you put your hand in his. He then bowed down and lifted his mask up to beneath his nose, and kisses it, making you smile at his formality.
“Is that what your voice sounds like?” you asked.
“What do you mean?” he inquired, keeping up with the accent.
“I mean, is that really what your voice sounds like?” you said with a quiet laugh, not wanting to wake up your parents. You moved away from the doorway, inviting the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man into your room. “Sounds different from the last time we met. Not to mention all those you tube videos.”
A grin graced his face, at least, the part you could see. It was familiar, but you couldn’t place your finger on it. Not to mention that it was remarkably charming. “Oh, yeah, no.” he stuttered, his skin flushed pink. Peter mentally cursed at himself for using the accent, but made you laugh and that’s what mattered to him. You gave him a small smile as he walked into your room.
The truth is, that Peter is head over heels for you. The boy didn’t just like like you, he was madly in love with you. Everything about you captivated him, like your voice, your laugh, your everything. The smile you gave him reminded him of the first time you met Spider-Man
‘God, why are things so slow today?’ Peter thought as he swung across the city he calls home. He landed on a rooftop and looked around, a certain someone caught his eye, walking home on the sidewalk. His advanced hearing allowed him to listen to the song you were quietly singing, which just happen to be one of his favourites. It made his heart soar.
“Darling, you look perfect, tonight.” he quietly sang under his breath, he loved it because it reminded him of you, he would think of you whenever it was on the radio.
You turned right, into a dark ally way. Not because you were about to do anything creepy, but because it was one the shortcuts you liked to use to get home quicker, and avoid crossing the streets.
Peter decided to  head home for the night, since there clearly wasn’t anything illegal going on. So he turned around and extended his arm, about to shoot out a web, when-
He heard you let out a loud cry and groan.
 “Let go of me! You.. you filthy animal!” you cried. A thug had pushed you against the wall, knife to your throat, ready to slit it at any second. Fear filled your guts when you saw how dangerously close the weapon was to you.
Spidey immediately ran to the edge of the building
“Aw, is the little princess scared?” he spat, looking at your body up and down with a devilish smirk on his face. “We can have some fun, right here, right now, but if you struggle, you can say goodbye to everything you love. Sound good?”
You gasped, eyes wide, never breaking eye contact with the man, but you saw the hero with your  peripheral vision. You relaxed a tiny bit, but still scared and mostly tense. “Mhmm,” you nodded, your voice was an octave higher than usual.
“Excellent, now be a good girl and take off your clothes.” he ordered, gesturing the knife up and down.
But of course, instead of doing as you were told, you froze as Spidey swooped in to save the day.
“Hey! Don’t you know that its kinda illegal to rape? Especially minors!” Peter kicked the thug, sending him flying and making his back hit the wall. You quickly grabbed your phone and dialed 911, telling the operator that you needed police, followed by your location.
After the police arrived and had taken care of the hooligan, Spider-Man offered to swing you home.
“No, no it’s alright,” you politely declined his offer, waving your hands in front of yourself. “I’ll walk home, it’s not too far from here.”
“I’ll walk with you then, ya know, in case more bad guys they to hurt you.” Peter said innocently. You giggled and started walking in the direction of your home. Originally, you had thought that the way home would be awkward, but it really wasn’t, there was just a comfortable silence. Until the infamous web-slinger broke it,
“You know, I think it should be illegal.” he said wisely. nodding once or twice to himself.
“Sorry, what?” you smiled, fiddling with your phone. “What should be illegal?”
“It should be illegal for someone as pretty as you to be walking all alone in the middle of the night.” he elaborated and even though you couldn’t see it, there a dopey smile playing on his lips
You laughed, “I bet you say that to tons of other girls.” you said, looking down and twirling a strand of hair on your finger.
“No, you’re the first,” he reassured you. “I don’t plan on using it one anyone else.”
You let out a soft gasp of surprise. Was Spider-Man... hitting on you? You pushed the thought aside, shaking your head to yourself.
“Well, this is my stop.” you said, about to open the front doors to your apartment building. “I guess I’ll see ya around, web-head.” you said.
“Web-head? Is that nickname?” he asked.
“Yeah,” you smiled. “My nickname, though.”
“So, whatcha dong here, web-head?” you asked, curiosity lacing your voice. You were now sitting on your bed, legs crossed and you patted the space beside you, gesturing that he could come sit down if he wanted to.
You broke Peter flashback. “I wanted to see how you’re holding up.” he replied simply. Peter came and sat beside you. You were looking off into the distance, deep in thought. Maybe you were thinking about that night, Peter couldn’t tell.
You let out a deep sigh. “I don’t know.. I mean, I’m still pretty shaken up if I’m being honest.” the web-shooter gently placed his gloved hand on yours, letting you know that it was alright. You gave him another reassuring smile, and took his hand in yours, and toyed with his fingers.
“Strange material,” you commented.
“Mr. Stark made it.”
“T-Tony Stark? That’s awesome!” you exclaimed.
“There’s a story behind it, if you want to hear.” Spider-Man offered. you gleefully nodded your head and git comfy on your bed, leaning against the headboard with your knees pulled up to your chest, arms wrapped around them.
So Peter told you his story. He told you everything, from the Washington Monument (he left out the part where he was there because of decathlon), to the Vulture guy. By the time he was done his storytelling, it was almost two in the morning. But, he accidently let the homecoming part slip his tongue
“Homecoming?” you questioned. “Are you in high school?”
“Yeah,” Peter nodded his head, knowing that there was no way of covering that up.
“What school do you go to?”
“I can’t tell you that, sorry.” Peter told you, a  sympathetic smile on his lips. “Tell me about yourself! After all, it is a little weird that I’m in your bedroom and I have no idea who you are.”
“Oh, okay. Well, my name is Y/N L/N and I go to Midtown Tech...” You explained, telling him all about yourself. You didn’t notice, but Peter looked at you with a lovestruck expression the whole time. He loved it when you talked about the things you love, you always had this sparkle in your eye, meaning that what you were saying was true. Peter listened as if he was getting to know you for the first time.
And when you mentioned Peter Parker, the web-shooter got interested.
“Who’s that?”
“Peter? Oh, he’s my best friend,” you smiled, that glint in your eye was back, but this time, it was special. “I’ve known him since elementary school, he’s like a brother to me.” Peter internally cringed, there it was, brother. Peter’s heart almost physically ached. He knew you didn’t return the feelings but he didn’t think he would he would be that affected by it. Parker had fallen harder than he thought.
“Although,” you continued. lifting Peter’s hopes a bit, “I’ve started developing a crush on him. It’s so weird, I’ve known him basically my whole life and now that I think about it, it’s like ‘woah, I’m in love with him.’” you blabbered out loud, smiling at the thought of Peter as your boyfriend.
“In in love... with my best friend.”
Peter felt mixed emotions, and these are his thoughts exactly:
‘ohmygodohmygodohmygodshe’sinlovewithmetoo!”
and
‘what she just confessed her feelings, what do I do????? do I tell her????”
Peter decided not to tell you, thinking it would be weird. “You should tell him.” he whispered, looking at you with a happy look. “He’d be over the moon.”
“No, it’s- it’ll be weird!” you laughed, shaking your head and shrugging.
“I’m in love with my best friend too.” Spidey said, he didn’t have time to process his thoughts before they escaped his lips.
“Really, web-head?” you gave him a glance. “Must be a lucky girl.”
Peter sighed. He dreadfully wished he was living this moment as Peter Parker, and not Spider-Man, but still, he couldn’t complain. You liked him back and that’s all that matters.
“Yeah, she’s... she’s perfect.”
You two talked for a few more hours, about everything. About, school, movies, everything you could think of. Peter told you all that he could about himself, without revealing his identity. By the time you had run out of things to talk about, your alarm went off.
“BEEP BEEP BEEP!” your alarm went. You jumped and let out a small shriek, quickly leaped out of bed, turning off your alarm.
“We seriously talked all night?” you said, surprised. Time goes by when you’re having fun. “I have to get ready for school.” you said with a frown.
“So do I,” he said, getting up from you bed. “Hey, don’t be sad, you’ll see Peter.”
“Oh, yeah!” you cheered up in an instant. But another frown graced your face. “Will you come back?”
“Do you want me to?”
You nodded shyly, looking down at the floor, and fiddling with the hem of your night shirt.
Peter stepped closer to you, and lifted your chin up with one of his fingers. You looked into the eyes of his mask, your heartrate was rapidly increasing and you felt your face flush pink, almost red. You eyes darted from his eyes to his lips, then back up again.
Peter placed a soft kiss on your lips, it felt sensational. It was short and sweet and lovely, and what Peter didn’t know, that it was your first kiss, and it was his a well.
Without knowing it, both of your leaned into another, sweet kiss, like it was meant to be. Your eyes fluttered close, as your lips barely brushed against each other, you pushed your lips onto his, relaxing in his arms which he put around you. Your lips moved in perfect harmony, perfectly synchronized. Both of you pulled back at the same time, softly gasping for air.
“Something to remember me by.” He said, before rushing to your balcony and swinging off into the distance.
Care
When you’d met Pietro Maximoff officially, he was recovering from the near-fatal wounds he’d received in Sokovia.
The first time, he’d been unconscious on an operating table.
You were a nurse who had been called in to assist Helen Cho with the surgery and Tony Stark had been impressed with your skills, offering you an on-call position with the Avengers. The pay was too good to pass up.
Truthfully, the money from working with the Avengers meant you no longer needed to work at the hospital. But you loved your job. Working in the OR was something you hadn’t expected when you began nursing school, but you’d found yourself offered a chance to stand in and fallen in love with it quickly.
You continued to work your regular schedule, only deviating when the Avengers called you in. Which, considering their profession, was often. A quinjet would land on the roof and you would be at the compound within thirty minutes.
The second time you were called in was when you saw Pietro again, and met him officially.
Clint Barton had had a small snaffu that resulted in a small surgery, meaning your services were required.
Why Tony Stark was willing to outsource you, you would never know. But you were grateful.
Pietro had been walking into the infirmary as you were leaving, your bag tossed over your shoulder as you paid your farewell to Helen. You hadn’t been fully paying attention to your surroundings and almost run Pietro over as you rushed to get back to work.
It was a slow day at the hospital, but you still felt bad for leaving them down one.
He caught you easily, steadying you and freezing you with his lightning blue eyes.
You were a goner.
Things progressed quickly and soon you were making excuses to stick around after surgeries and Pietro was showing up at the hospital during your breaks. It was too easy to fall head over heels for him, and part of you knew it wouldn’t last.
It had been a long day, and you were running late to meet Pietro for dinner.
What had been scheduled as a twelve hour shift had turned into fourteen hours. You were dead on your feet, but excited to see Pietro after almost two weeks.
He’d been away on a mission and when he’d called the previous night to ask you to dinner, you’d jumped at the opportunity.
You’d agreed for him to show up at your apartment at eight, giving you enough time to change and make yourself presentable after getting off work at seven. But now it was nine and you’d made sure to call him when you realized you’d be late. He understood, knowing the pressures of being in the OR, and said he would meet you in the front lobby of your apartment so you could grab a quick dinner.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the last time it happened. And suddenly you were going weeks without seeking Pietro due to work and his missions.
You didn’t know when the doubts began to creep up, but after two months without seeing him, you were struck with fear that perhaps he would realize you weren’t good enough for him.
He was an Avenger after all, and you knew he could get any girl he pleased. So what was he doing with someone like you? Your shifts were growing longer and longer, as accidents and crime escalated in the surrounding neighborhoods, and you were sure he’d realized you weren’t worth the trouble.
After another fourteen hour shift that involved two different surgeries from a car wreck, you were at your wits end. One of the patient’s had had severe brain damage and their skull had been fractured, they died on the table and though you knew it was a hazard of the profession, it never got any easier.
Realizing there were no messages from Pietro caused you to snap, your insecurities taking over and you had typed and sent the message before the rational side of you had a chance to stop you.
“I can’t do this anymore, I’m sorry.”
The fear in your gut hit its peak when you saw his reply: “If that’s what you want.”
That was where it ended. That was where you left it.
Over the next few months, every time you were called in, Pietro was either on a mission, or out of the compound. It filled you with relief while also causing your heart to drop into your stomach.
It hurt how much you missed him, but you assumed he was doing better without you.
Especially when Steve mentioned in passing that Pietro was seeing someone new, though you’d already assumed he had to be.
It didn’t make sense for him to stay single.
You had gone on a couple of dates too, but you weren’t looking for a relationship anyway. Well, not with anyone who wasn’t Pietro.
Steve noticed the small drop in your usual smile and gave you a small smile in return. The other Avengers had noticed your change in behavior as soon as you’d broken things off with Pietro, but they were nice enough to let you alone.
“Good for him,” you replied tightly, readjusting the backpack on your shoulder and shrugging. “He deserves to be happy.”
Steve nodded and you waved a small goodbye as you made your way back to the quinjet that would be taking you back to work.
-
Seven hours and one surgery later, you were walking out of the hospital feeling like you’d been hit by a bus.
A hip replacement had taken longer than initially expected, meaning you had been standing in the OR for six hours straight before someone came to relieve you. Under normal circumstances, you wouldn’t have minded, but having already spent three hours in surgery with Helen earlier, you were beat.
As you rounded the corner to take your usual route home, an arm appeared and pulled you roughly into the alleyway.
A hand covered your mouth quickly and you fought against the hands that pushed you against the brick wall.
Two in the morning meant the walking traffic was light and you cursed yourself for not being more observant. Bringing your right hand up, you tried to break the strong grip holding you to the wall.
They were wearing a mask and the panic took over for a few seconds as you wondered what they wanted.
Were they going to try to rape you? That was the most likely.
The slap forced your head to slam into the wall behind you and you blinked rapidly as you continued to struggle. Clenching your jaw, you brought your leg up to strike him in the gut and brought your right palm to his nose when he keeled over. When he released his grip on you, you screamed for help as you brought your knee up again to smack his nose again for good measure.
Turning to run, you saw a couple had heard your screams and were rushing towards you. They asked if you were alright as the woman dialed 911.
A groan caused you to turn back to see your attacker trying to push himself to his feet.
Something snapped within you and you kicked him in the side, forcing him back down as you screamed for him to stay down.
Adrenaline was pumping through you and when the woman placed a comforting hand on your shoulder, you flinched harshly.
“Sorry,” she murmured. “Let’s get you away from here.”
The woman walked you back to the hospital while the man stayed behind to monitor your attacker and you soon found yourself in a small triage, answering the cops’ questions while one of the ER docs assessed your condition.
“Jesus,” Jason, one of the on-call doctors, said as he stared down at you. “You’ve got a fire, don’t you? Cops said they’ve been trying to catch that guy for months now.” He was sewing the gash on the back of your head closed when he realized your reaction times were too slow. “You’ve got a concussion.” He pursed his lips as he stitched you up. “Someone needs to monitor you for the night.”
He stared down at you intently, his eyebrows furrowed when you told him you’d be fine. Not to mention that you didn’t have anyone to look after you.
You liked Jason. He was nice, and typically kept to himself. According to your head nurse, he’d only been at the hospital a year longer than you. His bright green eyes and goofy smile made you wonder sometimes how he had remained single for so long. But you assumed it was much like you: no time outside of work. You’d barely spoken to him away from the hospital, having been in two of his surgeries when you were on-call.
He had the typical humor of an ER doctor, dark. It helped keep everyone sane and from dropping into depression at any small mishap.
“We called the emergency number on your phone,” one of the nurses, Amanda said as she walked past. “They said they were on their way.”
You wracked your brain to try to remember who you had as your emergency contact, but were cut short of asking when Pietro was suddenly at your side.
“Are you-?”
His question was cut off by Jason, who quickly explained that you needed to be watched for the night because of your concussion and gave Pietro explicit instructions on how to look after you.
“I’m not a child,” you mumbled and Jason turned to grin at you.
“I know that,” he replied, reaching out to pat your shoulder softly. “But you know how serious concussions can be. I’d help you out myself if I didn’t have to be here for the rest of the night.”
Rolling your eyes, you pushed yourself up from the gurney and waved him off.
“I’m fine, Jason, honestly,” you insisted. “Don’t worry about it.”
“I can drop by after I get off in the morning if you want,” Jason offered, his expression nervous as he waited for your response.
You truly considered it for a few moments until you heard Pietro clear his throat and you shrugged, a small smile on your face.
“Thanks Jason,” you replied, throwing a quick glance over your shoulder. “I think I’ll be okay, but I really appreciate the offer.”
He nodded and you bit your lip, contemplating your next action carefully.
“I’ll-” you paused, losing your nerve before you could utter the words. “I’ll see you around, Jason.”
Pietro was holding your backpack as you stepped towards him and motioned for him to follow you out of the hospital once you’d checked yourself out.
Once outside, you let out a breath and turned to see him staring at you.
“You don’t really have to watch me,” you said cautiously. “I can take care of myself and I’m sure you have better things to do than make sure I don’t fall asleep.”
His only response was a firm shake of his head as he ushered you towards your apartment. The fifteen minute walk felt like an eternity, both of you walking as quickly as possible and remaining silent the entire way.
“I’m sorry they called you,” you blurted out when you arrived at your building. “I’ll make sure to switch my emergency contact so you don’t have to-”
“I don’t mind,” he said, cutting you off. “I’m glad they called me.”
You went silent as you reached the elevator, pressing the button for your floor as you tried to think of anything to get rid of the awkward silence. He beat you to the punch, his eyes boring into yours while he spoke.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, watching your face to make sure you weren’t lying.
“I’m fine,” you replied quickly. “Really. It’s just a couple scratches.”
“I mean how are you feeling mentally?” he corrected himself, watching as you looked down and stepped out of the elevator. “Are you okay?”
Shrugging your shoulders, you unlocked the door and stepped through, waiting for him to follow before you shut the door behind you. After you double-checked the lock, you walked into the kitchen to get a drink and Pietro repeated his question from behind you.
“I’m fine,” you replied again. “Honestly, Pietro, no one ever believes that I can take care of myself. He didn’t do anything other than grab me before I fought free.”
“You had to get stitches,” he said quietly, his hand reaching up to touch the back of your head lightly, causing you to flinch away. “No matter how well you fought, it had to have been scary.”
“I’m fine,” you repeated, turning to send him a glare. “Really. I promise. And you really don’t have to stay, I can take care of myself. It’s just a concussion.”
“I’m sure you wouldn’t mind if that Jason guy came by to check on you,” he muttered and you scowled.
“For one,” you retorted. “That’s none of your business. And secondly, I turned him down if you remember correctly. I don’t need anyone babysitting me, thank you.”
Pietro rolled his eyes and stepped closer, “You wouldn’t have turned him down if I hadn’t been there. If you’d prefer him, be my guest.”
Clenching your fist, you took a calming breath, determined to not lose your temper.
“For God’s sake, let that go,” you said, pushing past him to walk into the living room. “If you want to leave, just leave. I don’t care. Like I said before, I’m fine by myself.” You turned the TV on and sat down on the couch, settling in and preparing yourself to stay up all night.
“I want to stay,” he admitted quietly. “I want to make sure you’re alright.” He took the seat next to you on the couch and smiled slightly. “I didn’t realize you could fight.”
Shrugging, you clutched the throw pillow close to your chest. “I took self-defense classes in college. Single girl walking across campus late at night, I figured I needed to know how to take care of myself.”
He didn’t reply, but you thought you saw a small amount of pride on his face as you spoke. People rarely believed that a girl your size was capable of fending for herself.
“And you’re sure you’re feeling alright?” he asked again, this time his voice filled with worry. “We could have Dr. Cho look over you to make sure-”
“Pietro,” you said, cutting him off. “I’m fine. Plus, Jason is one of the best Doctors in the city. You can trust that his diagnosis is right. I’ll be fine, I promise.”
“He said not to let you sleep-”
“Just for a few hours to make sure I’m not going to slip into a coma,” you finished for him. “If I experience any major pain, apply ice and rest. Pietro, I’m a nurse. I know.”
He settled back onto the couch with a grumble and you turned back to the TV, pulling Netflix up and choosing a series she had seen before. You wanted something she didn’t have to focus on.
“How have you been?” he asked suddenly, causing you to jump slightly. “I- haven’t seen you in a while.”
“I’ve been working,” you replied quietly. “Just- just trying to keep up with life.”
“Are you,” he paused when you turned to look at him. “Are you seeing anyone? Jason?”
You couldn’t fight the urge to roll your eyes at him. “No. Jason and I are just coworkers.”
He nodded absently, his attention returning to the TV and he sighed after a few minutes.
“I’m not with anyone either,” he continued. “I’ve been hoping to catch you whenever you’re at the compound, Steve said I just missed you earlier.”
“You people just can’t stay out of trouble,” you responded before you could stop yourself. You were there multiple times most weeks. “But at least you’re in one piece.”
“I miss you,” he admitted. “A lot. I never got to ask why you decided to end it?”
You shrunk into the couch cushions, utterly unprepared for the conversation he was trying to start. How could you possibly tell him that your insecurities convinced you that you weren’t good enough for him? It was bad enough that you was bombarded with his presence without warning, but now you was trapped in your apartment with him until morning.
At your silence, he turned to stare at you as you tried your best to disappear into the cushions. It wasn’t like you really wanted to breach the topic, especially since you didn’t want to lie to him.
“I just-” you let out a heavy sigh. “I’m not- I don’t feel like I’m enough for you, you know?” Your voice was quiet as you wrapped your arms around your body. On top of everything, the stress of the day was finally catching up. You really didn’t want to cry in front of him. “You’re a superhero, Pietro. And I’m just- I’m me. And I was so busy working all the time, I never got to see you and I was afraid you would get tired of constantly having to wait for me-”
He cut you off when he pulled you towards him, hugging you tightly.
“I thought you were tired of me,” he said, chuckling lightly. “How could I get tired of you? You’re wonderful and fun and cute, and you save more lives than I ever could.”
“I work in the OR,” she muttered. “You jet around the world and save people-”
“You chose your job,” he said, cutting her off. “I was- given mine. Being an Avenger, it’s a great job and I love helping people. But what you do, is so much more. You help so many people, just because that’s how you are. I’ve admired you from the moment I met you. You have such a kind heart, and I always loved watching you interact with patients when I came to visit. You’re amazing.”
The blush that appeared on your cheeks and down your neck surprised you. You had never been complimented on your choice of profession before. It had just been something that always appealed to you.
“Can we try again?” he asked timidly. “I’ve missed you so much. I don’t care if you have to work long hours, so do I sometimes.”
The small nod you gave was enough for him and he pulled you closer, cuddling you into his side and pressing a light kiss to your forehead.
“Rest, but don’t sleep,” he murmured, his hand rubbing your arm slowly. “We’ll talk more in the morning.”
Hope you guys liked it! Sorry for taking so long.
four.
Waiting for 6 o'clock was agonizing. (Y/N) had an alarm set on her phone. The moment it went off she grabbed all her things and ran out of her room, stopping only to grab her backpack off the counter.
"Woah, slow down tiger." (Y/N)'s mom slowed her down, "Where are you going in such a rush?"
"Mr. Delmars, I just need to start my homework." (Y/N) explained.
"I've never seen you so excited to do homework, why you have a friend coming? A boy?" She guessed, (Y/N) hesitated and swallowed, "A boy! Is he cute? Oh, I'm going in tonight sooner than I thought. It's okay, I won't embarrass you."
"Mom, seriously don't. Please. He's the like the first friend I made at school, I don't want him to think I'm lame already." (Y/N) begged, knowing she couldn't kick her mom out of her own work.
"I won't, what did I say?" Her mom said, flicking her eyes down to her shoes, "You better clean those shoes off before your dad gets home. And your dad's not going to be happy if he finds out you're out with a boy late."
"K." (Y/N) shrugged, looking at the dirt that's piled up on her shoes.
"I'm serious." Her mom said, putting her hands on the table, "Look, I know that since your dad and I ended our separation it's been hard for you. Especially with the move, this new apartment, new school... but he is trying. For the first time in a long time. Please just-"
"I get it, mom." (Y/N) said, giving her a half smile and shrugging the other strap of her backpack on.
"Sometimes it doesn't seem like you do." Mrs. (Y/LN) said.
"I'm gonna go do my homework." She walked past her and left the apartment.
Running down the steps she made loud thuds. She really honestly didn't like her dad as much as she wanted to. She was glad that her parents got back together, another step next having a normal life. But it never felt right now that it has happened, he was angrier now than when she remembered. She got to Mr. Delmars soon after, since it was just across the street.
"Miss. (Y/L/N), glad you could make it. Where's your mother?" Mr. Delmar welcomed her.
"She's coming down soon." (Y/N) responded, putting her stuff at a table with 2 chairs.
"Good. I need to tell her about Mr. Parker that came in with you today." Mr. Delmar laughed.
"She already figured it out." (Y/N) said, her face going red.
"Parents always know, I know my daughters got a crush on someone before she even shuts the door. That's how I knew the moment I saw you two walking past my window." Mr. Delmar said, proud of himself.
"How long have you known him?" (Y/N) asked.
"Long enough to know you deserve better." Mr. Delmar said leaning on his counter, "Mr. Parker's a great kid, but these past few months the kids gotten cocky, never focuses on anything. But what do I know? I just make his lunch every day."
"Is it okay that I invited him to help me do my homework later?" (Y/N) asked, a little disappointed in the answer to her last question.
"As long as the two of you aren't touching at all, and I'm hearing homework talk." Mr. Delmar huffed and went back to cleaning.
"You got it." (Y/N) huffed, not that she would touch Peter, she'd be way to scared for that.
Starting her calculus homework, (Y/N) found herself in a trance. Thinking about Peter. She couldn't help herself, trying her best to snap out of it because she had only known him a day. Barely. Like 3/4 of a day.
She just wanted to know more about him. Who he was, what he was like. It had been a long time since she had gotten this excited over a boy.
After a while (Y/N) checked her phone. 6:12 PM.
Time had never moved slower while she waited for a blue sweater to walk in the door of this gross sandwich shop, in a horrible neighborhood, and learn about physics and chemistry. She started to wonder if Peter would actually come.
Little did she know, Peter was there. Just not there-there. He was across the street, looking in the sandwich shop window from a rooftop. She looked so pretty, he could tell that she had brushed her hair and thrown on some makeup to cover up her bruised nose.
Peter couldn't believe it. Could she really have a crush on him? Or it was more likely just her wanting to have a friend so badly after being new. He decided to treat it that way until proven otherwise. But a girl hadn't liked him since kindergarten, so finding out what "otherwise" meant was going to be really hard.
He heard something. Breaking and mumbling of men walking into the ATM across from the sandwich shop.
 Finally something interesting.
It was then that (Y/N) heard loud noises in her left ear. Then big flashes of light came about, forcing her to turn her head. Some guy in a red and blue jumpsuit and a mask was fighting off these guys in Avengers mask in the ATM across the street.
"Mr. Delmar!" She got up immediately, alarmed at the sight. She never really saw this kind of stuff.
"What-" Mr. Delmar came out, slightly annoyed until he saw what (Y/N) was pointing to. He'd lived in Queens for a few years now, he knows what happens when weapons like that enter New York.
"Who is that?" (Y/N) asked, blinking her eyes a few times. Seeing the guy in the jumpsuit jump from edge to edge of the bank, more defending himself than anything.
"Spiderman, don't you watch YouTube?" Mr. Delmar rolled his eyes, his phone dialed and to his ear. He saw the weapon used on Spiderman now, it made him hover in the air, up and down, up and-
"(Y/N), get in the back now. Go into the closet and shut the door, I need you to hide." Mr. Delmar pointed, concerned for what that other gun might do.
"What? Why?" (Y/N) asked,  squinting.
"Now, please!" Mr. Delmar rushed, the 911 operator finally picking up, "Hi, yeah, uh, Spiderman is fighting the Avengers in the bank on 22nd street?"
(Y/N) heard Mr. Delmar speaking through the door. She waited there, wanting to know what might happen until reality was quick to tell her. The whole building shook, causing her to fall over and hit her head on the shelf next to her in the closet, her butt landing in a bucket. Soon the smell of smoke snuck its way under the crevice of the door.
"Mr. Delmar!"
Spiderman looked over, seeing the explosion of the Deli Shop and his heart dropped. Seeing where once he was looking over to find comfort in (Y/N) doing her homework, her spot now filled with flames. He completely forgot about the robbers surrounding him. He ran as fast as he could, jumping over the fallen part of building and into the shop.
"(Y/N)!" Peter yelled, he jumped over the counter, "Mr. Delmar! Hello? Is anybody in here?"
Mr. Delmar was under the back counter, trying to avoid any of the falling debris. Spiderman reached his hand down to bring Mr. Delmar out.
"C'mon, let's get you out of here, sir." He said, "Is anyone else here?"
Just then a yell came from behind the closed door of the janitors closet. There was a fire just outside the door where the oven had fallen over and caught fire. Inside, (Y/N) had tried grabbing the door handle in an attempt to free herself. The burning door handle had given quite the burn to the nerves on (Y/N)'s hand.
Peter jumped into action, jumping over the flames and calling to (Y/N) on the other side to back away from the door. He ripped the door off and saw a faint and coughing (Y/N) on the other side. She could barely hold herself up from the lack of oxygen in the closet.
Peter held his hand out and stepped closer to her, not trying to overwhelm her, "Let's get you out of here, miss." he tried deepening his voice but immediately regretted it. It sounded stupid.
She couldn't stand for very long and her hand was so burned and calloused she resulted in just falling onto the Spiderman. Peter couldn't relish in it for as long as he wanted to, but he put his arm around her waist with one hand and lifted her just high enough off her feet for her to hang her arms over his shoulders for support and her head into the nook of his neck.
He jumped over the fire again, afraid of it growing angrier. He put Mr. Delmar's arm around his shoulders and carried the two of them out. Setting Mr. Delmar on the fruit stand stool and (Y/N) on the curbside. Peter squatted at her eye level and took a look at her hand.
"Does it hurt?" He asked.
"Yeah." She coughed through her answer. Then a thought occurred to Peter, running in to grab Murph the cat who was hiding in the corner of the shop.
"Here, here you go." He handed Murph to Mr. Delmar, and took a second to see the abandoned and messy ATM, "Oh, come on."
Holding her head, she thought she would pass out. Or at least that's what Peter thought she had been worried about.
"Are you guys going to be okay?" Peter asked, realizing he needed to hurry.
"You tell me, Spiderman," (Y/N) turned her head, "Do you think my teachers will believe the Avengers blew up my homework?"
"If they don't, I'll come in and make sure they do," Peter said, not remembering to change his voice. But she wasn't paying as much attention now. The street light pulled over and the once distant sound of sirens was growing closer.
And then he was away. (Y/N) left on that street corner to await her wailing mother who finally came out of the apartment building, so thankful that her daughter was out of the deli, thanks to Spiderman.
Synopsis: Loki is here, (Finaly)
Type: x fem!reader
Warnings: Violence, not excplicit
Tumblr media
7:25, 15:25, why was that the time of night that (Y/N) enjoyed most? It was because she could go home, curl up with a home cooked dinner, pet her dog, Ash, and binge watch American Horror Story to her heart’s content. There were no students, no annoying co-workers and no assessments to grade. Just (Y/N), her dog and Evan Peters.
It was when Elsa started fake crying over a severed head that her cell phone rang.
(Y/N) had given her cellphone number to her students at the beginning of the school year if they needed help. It was unlike anyone in her classes to call this late. So (Y/N) picked up immediately.
“Hello?” She said, pausing her show and giving her grey Australian Selie some ear scratches.
“Hello Miss. (Y/N).” A deep, rich, voice permeated through the speaker.
“I’m afraid I don’t know who I am speaking to.” (Y/N) stated as she hastily grabbed her home phone, ready to dial 911 at any time. The person behind the phone could be a friend that had gone through puberty, the parent of a student or a person from one of the big super co-operations obsessed with her joining the team. She placed the phone on the table beside her and slid her hand under her couch and gripped her athame tightly in one hand. “Who are you?” (Y/N) asked as she slid it out of its sheath.
“I don’t see the point in lying to you ma’am. My name is Nick Fury and my team and I know what you did in 2012, during the alien invasion.” The man on the other side of the phone seemed like he was trying to get something out of her and he wasn’t going to get a reaction.
“And what of it? Do you need me to cure some ailment of yours Mr. Fury? It isn’t blackmail to me.” Keeping her voice steady (Y/N) pressed the nine in on her home phone. She prepared to push in the first one.
“I want to bring you in.” Nick stated as she was preparing to dial the final number in her alert call. “I assume you have heard of the Avengers.” He was serious, (Y/N) could tell, so she canceled her call and put the phone back on the charging station.
“I have heard of the Avengers,” (Y/N) said, sinking back onto the couch where her dog was napping. “But, I am not about to join them Mr. Fury. I intend to live my life separate from all of the superhero drama. I would prefer it if you didn’t call me again.”
(Y/N) slid her dagger back into its hidden sheath and stood up, feeling like eating junk food after having to participate in more human interaction than she would have liked to.
“All I am saying,” Fury continued, “is that we would like to have you Red Cross.”
(Y/N) tensed up a bit, then she laughed, a small breath that sounded like uplifting birds. “That codename is so cringy, who gave it to me? No, don’t answer that. If you had to give me a nickname, I would choose Safeguard. That is because my powers safeguard lives. You should probably know I can’t heal everything. If the wound is life threatening, I can heal it if it would be possible for you to survive if that makes sense. But I suppose you knew that before you called me.”
She made her way to a chair near the window, overlooking the streets below.
Nick Fury didn’t answer, in fact he was quiet, too quiet.
(Y/N) checked her phone and the call was still open. She held the phone to her ear. “Hello? Mr. Fury?”
The explosion nearly deafened her. Screams came from the other side and the sound of metal piercing flesh filled the speakerphone. Fury gasped and (Y/N) nearly dropped her phone as the sound of a body hitting the ground accompanied by cold laughter.
A voice she recognized, but couldn't place, spoke up. "Sir that phone line is open."
(Y/N) jumped as the sound of smashing glass filled the phone, then silence filled the room.
(Y/N) pulled the phone away from her face. She had just heard a murder being committed over the phone.
Sha shakely got up and sat her phone on the table. Her brain was still awash with images of a faceless man being stabbed to death.
She looked out the window for some calm, however, all she could feel was panic. She screamed as the huge beast made of metal and flesh soared across the street and cut through the building across from hers. The chitauri were back in New York.
She didn't have time to pull her atheme from under the couch before Captain America burst through her door. He looked different. All muscle and brute force, no tactics behind his crystal blue eyes.
"Captain Rogers?" (Y/N) asked confusedly.
He stalked over to the young woman and dragged her out of her apartment and down the hall.
At the end of the corridor, (Y/N)'s neighbours were being escorted outside by some men with guns.
She pulled a pair of gloves from her pocket and slipped them onto her hands. To prevent any 'miracles' from occurring.
Steve shoved her into the crowd of people in the doorway and she made her way down the stairs and into the twilight where a crowd was forming.
(Y/N) was pushed against strangers and was glad she remembered her gloves. She stood on her tiptoes to get a glimpse of what was in front of it.
A handsome man, dressed in green, black and gold armor stood before the crowd. And the second he spoke, they all fell silent.
"Kneel before me." It was a simple command and so with the rest of the scared citizens (Y/N) sank to her knees.
"Look at all of you." The man chuckled, raising his arms to welcome the attention. "In your proper place, bowing to your king. Some of you may fight, some will obey. Those who obey will be rewarded, those of you who fight, will be punished."
(Y/N) inhaled a deep breath as she scanned the crowd for her students. MJ was being held down by Ned who was trembling. Flash was staring at the ground. Eye bruised from where somebody had hit him.  She spotted every single student, except for Peter Parker.
Loki, or the king, as he referred to himself spoke for over an hour about the punishments for disobedience, many of which were prison or death. He then changed the topic to those who obeyed.
"To all of you loyal subjects out there. Those who would swear an oath to their king, you shall be my court, my lords and ladies, noble people." He scanned the crowd for those who were paying attention. And his eye caught (Y/N)'a for just a second before he continued.
"There will be little use for the professions you once held. Your reassignment will begin immediately." Loki said with enthusiasm.
Over the next few days, the Avengers pulled people from their homes to speak to the king. If they refused their assignment, they were killed. Corpses were hung up to prove points and (Y/N) was relieved every day when she didn't see a single student's body.
She had managed to contact every student except for one, Peter Parker. She had called his Aunt May and had asked her. It appeared that she would have to call stark tower to talk to her missing student.
The tower where the king resided and was holding the Avengers, at least, those who he didn't brainwash.
(Y/N) picked up her cell phone, took a deep breath and dialed the number.
Deadpool & Rogue are going to be the next "it" couple
Since the beginning of Uncanny Avengers people speculated that Deadpool and Rogue were going to fall in love and so far they've just become good friends but now is a pretty good opportunity to turn that into a romantic relationship.
I've never made it is secret that I love Rogue and that when she isn't with Gambit my heart is broken. Unless it's bad writing I'm okay with seeing them get together with other people because they have an open relationship and if anyone could do polyamory, they could.
So Uncanny Avengers begins and I'm very suspicious of Rogue being on a team with Deadpool because they didn't seem like a good combination. They can certainly relate, they have a lot of common trauma and similar issues but Deadpool relies on humor to deal with it and Rogue doesn't laugh much, she shoves all her pain down and uses it to fuel her determination while fighting on the front lines and she's always fighting on the front lines.
Another thing I wondered about was Rogue being the team leader. Rogue isn't exactly a leader. Storm is a natural leader, she can handle the burden of being a huge population's only hope, she can command an audience of militants, and there's just something about her that demands respect and loyalty.
Tumblr media
Rogue just really likes getting in and getting the job done, politics is not her thing.
Tumblr media
And she works really well when someone like Storm is calling the shots
Tumblr media
Awesome.
and Rogue hates the Avengers. She likes individuals that are and have been members but she was one of the very first mutants to ever fight them and she has lived through every one of their attempts to aid the genocide of mutants
Tumblr media
but Deadpool is super excited!
Rogue and Deadpool have never really met but they have run into each other in passing so Rogue does what everyone does and judges Deadpool on his reputation. Meanwhile, she secretly has been poisoned with the Terrigen Mist so her body is slowly becoming deformed while she slowly dies from a terminal disease
That's something Deadpool has lots of experience with so you know from the get go that they are going to at least commiserate
Tumblr media
Like I said, Rogue works well as a tank or free agent but she has hard time leading. On their very first mission everyone but Deadpool ignored her orders and went off to do their own thing.
Tumblr media
Deadpool seems to be one of the few people who understood and cared that Rogue being leader or even on the Avengers at all came with a lot of subsequent dangers because of racism
Deadpool also isn't a natural leader, like Rogue he works best when you just tell him where to go and let him do his thing. But he's loyal and even though it seems impossible he is more upset about casual racism toward her than she is.
Tumblr media
Cable shows up with bad news from the future as he is want to do and he is a leader, a leader both Rogue and Deadpool have worked with. He's also someone that Deadpool loves and respects immensely. Rogue isn't opposed to Cable taking over but before she entrusts him with her teammates lives she wants to know what his objectives are and surprisingly Deadpool agrees with her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's no surprise that the team is a mess. Captain America stuck a bunch of people of different races together, some pulled from segregated communities, to sell diversity to the media but as always he doesn't exactly understand racism and the team fractures. Cable, Rogue, and Deadpool stick together and actually work behind Captain America's back (which is huge for Deadpool) to find a cure for this poison that was exterminating mutants and stop the Red Skull who had taken the deceased Charles Xavier's brain and was using it to take over the world.
Rogue and Deadpool are actually really good teammates, Deadpool even does things to remind Rogue of home and her family (the X-Men)
Tumblr media
(that's a signature X-Men finishing move Colossus and Wolverine use when they are tag teaming)
they even make their own signature move
Tumblr media
and they are badass
Rogue puts her faith in Deadpool that he will have her back but still remained wary because he was still Deadpool and she still has all of her baggage and trust issues but suddenly the whole world changes.
Everyone is human, can't remember ever being superheroes, and the world runs like a 50s sitcom. Everyone but Rogue is happy. She's never lived in a world where at least one person wasn't constantly trying to abuse or kill her so even though she doesn't know what's going on she's suspicious of peace
Tumblr media
No one knows Rogue's real name so if someone isn't calling her Rogue they usually just call her a few names that sound like it fits and for some reason Rogue has always been fine with that but in this instance it's supposed to be weird
All the X-Men and the kids at their schools have extensive training in blocking psychic/telekinetic/mind control etc. so they can keep their privacy in all of the mutant compounds despite the fact that the biggest gossips are always psychic. Also so shit like this doesn't happen. Rogue arguably has the most training in this for someone who has no psychic powers and through her safeguards she makes herself remember everything and now she has to go find everyone else that is supposed to be on her/their team.
Luckily one of them, Johnny Storm, lives next door so she reminds him that he can control fire by lighting him on fire. Also, he thought his name was Chet
Rogue doesn't give a fuck
Everyone is rounded up pretty quickly and Rogue wakes people up her own way
Tumblr media
(Ms. Marvel isn't on her team but she was bicycling by so Rogue snagged her)
No one knows where Deadpool is so Cable, and this is hilarious, has been on so many adventures with him he knows he just has to present an opportunity and Deadpool will appear so he calls 911 and Deadpool immediately shows up in a fire truck
but he doesn't look like himself
Tumblr media
Every time Deadpool gets changed into his ideal body he looks like a 70s porn*
So Wade Wilson lives in this pseudo-universe as a "handsome" able-bodied man who is everyone's hero, a firefighter. It's kind of extremely sad and Rogue takes special care with him, much to Johnny's chagrin
I think it's notable that Rogue just has to tell him something is going on and he immediately remembers who he is. Besides he and Rogue, it seems hard for everyone to accept that this picturesque life isn't real. The both of them grew up experiencing the worst of humanity (we don't really know about Rogue's childhood but she was raised into early adulthood by her mother's, so it still couldn't have been super easy considering they were all mutants and also a queer family in the 70s) they are both also very isolated in their own way, a peaceful happy world is so beyond their comprehension so it's artifice would be easy to deconstruct.
You don't see how Cable comes to but I'm pretty sure he immediately was like "not this shit again"
The current mutant genocide is getting worse and Captain America tries to use how much Deadpool admires and loves him to be his informant but Deadpool remained loyal to Rogue and Cable
Tumblr media
Captain America wants them to trust the government to save their race to which they said "LOL" and he and Cable fight but Rogue gets fed up
Deadpool tries to explain to Captain America that he had no choice but to side with the X-Men because his daughter is a mutant and is going to die
Deadpool takes the dressing down but Rogue defense him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are both fired but they still stick together to discuss what they should do and Rogue suggest… Well, she suggests that they go rogue
Tumblr media
Rogue isn't a great leader but she's really great at heading side missions or defecting to get the job done with the more hands-on approach. This is up Deadpool's alley so they take off for adventure.
And one protecting the other has become my fetish
We just recently got the conclusion of Rogue, Deadpool, and Cable's team up objective. The Red Skull is using Charles Xavier's brain to infiltrate everyone's brain
Tumblr media
and eventually he finds a way to break into to Rogue's mind while she sleeps
Tumblr media
and they made a clubhouse with stuff they took from the Avengers
Tumblr media
So finally the Red Skull has to be confronted for the final battle and it relies on Rogue and Deadpool. No one has the ability to infiltrate Deadpool's mind because his psyche is so shattered so he's immune and Rogue has training to protect her mind and is one of the few people who can actually take him down so they get to it and call in any support they can get
Cute highlights:
When the tide turns in the battle Rogue is overtaken by the powers of Charles Xavier's brain and the Red Skull has complete control over her, so he uses her as his personal weapon
Tumblr media
God, I love her
Thankfully Deadpool is used to things failing so he had a plan. Rogue kills Deadpool as much as she can, the Red Skull gets overconfident and let's guard down, then Deadpool sticks an old helmet of Magneto's on Rogue's head. Seems like that should have been the first thing they should have done but Deadpool getting himself kill over and over got her close enough and in a position where she could take the Red Skull down while he was unaware
But Deadpool had intended to be the one to kill the Red Skull once Rogue incapacitated him but she had hurt him too much
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deadpool is worried that Rogue is going to take it upon herself to kill the red skull as much as she doesn't want any more blood on her hands but the guy has Charles Xavier's brain inside of him so she goes home and the X-Men play operation
That's it! That's their whole story so far. So, should they get together?
I'm biased but don't they make the best brOTP? I love their friendship so so much and it's great to see it slowly develop instead of the writers just miraculously having them get along because it's easier for the story.
Do I think they should date?
Hell yes I do.
It is nice to have genuine friendships in comic books, especially between people of different genders, but this is just too good. Because their friendship was such a slow build the sexual tension feels really organic and that's almost impossible to get in a medium like this. They haven't been friends forever and just because it was convenient they didn't suddenly hook up to further the plot. They are significant characters with significant back stories and the relationship doesn't contradict either of those things. They haven't been almost getting together and getting torn apart like you would have to sit through if story of the relationship was just about their romance.
I'm fine if they remain friends but (unpopular opinion) it would be an amazing relationship with a lot of potential between them; a lot of good and a lot of bad potential which makes the best stories. Unfortunately I don't think they will ever get this opportunity for a "slow build" in other books so how long it will remain interesting would depend on the writer.
And the time schedule.
And whether you guys would buy those issues or not.
Let me know what you think. If you totally hate them together that's cool, I want to hear your perspective. What would you like to happen between them?
