Not All Treasure is Silver and Gold (Part One)
Pairing: Pirate!Bakugou x mermaid!reader
Warnings: Ehh, this portion is gender neutral but from here on out the reader is referred to as female. This does work as a stand alone story, though. Otherwise no warnings from this one.
{Pt. 1} {Pt. 2} {Pt. 3} {Pt. 4}
Author's Note:
Sooo, I know I said I probably wouldn't have this out for another while, buuuttt, I didn't have anything for today and this one was just staring at me 🥺. I don't quite have a concrete plan for the full thing, and there's no guarantees for when part two is going to come out. Also I might draw something like last time to use as a banner. The one that's down there is a placeholder.
Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy this! I've been wanting to write this story for almost a year now, and I finally have the chance! If you'd like to be part of the taglist for this story, please message me!
I think that's it. Love you!!

A shadow slid across the ocean floor.
Basking in the warmth of the sun, it truly made for an unwelcome interruption. You'd been partaking in a nap only moments prior, mind slowly shifting through half-baked thoughts as the sun shone down onto the sand beneath you. Prompted by the change of brightness and temperature, you blinked your eyes open, rolling over to your back with a lethargic stretch of your arms. Squinting, you frowned up at the surface rippling a considerable distance above you.
There you saw it, some strange shape making its way over the water above. It seemed to be some kind of brownish color, wide and tapered to a point at each end.
Your annoyance faded as curiosity struck you. You didn’t think you’d ever seen anything like it before. You studied it from your vantage point on the ocean floor even as the sunlight reappeared on your relaxed body. It wasn’t as though you were doing anything important right now, you figured. Maybe it was something worth investigating, at least for a short time.
Rousing yourself from the sand, you flicked your tail to propel yourself up in the direction of the object.
You poked your head out of the water, body bobbing up and down with the motions of the waves. You blinked, bringing a hand out of the water in an attempt to shield your vision from the blinding sun. How did anything live up here? It felt as though your eyes were going to dry up and incinerate to nothing.
There it was, the strange object that had cast such a shadow. It was even bigger above water. Mahogany planks shaped it into that odd form, making it float on the ocean, cutting through waves as though they were nothing. Large masts seemed to sprout up from the center like kelp in a forest, sporting billowing white cloths rippling in the air currents.
Ah, yes, it was a boat, and an impressive one at that. You suddenly remembered seeing the ones just like this that couldn’t float anymore, having swum past the ruined, swollen wood during your time in this part of the sea. They were ominous, sitting still on the ocean floor, carrying a dark, somber aura about them as they laid dead where they’d never move again.
But this ship was every meaning of the word alive, shining in the midday sun and skimming dutifully over the bright blue water. Its size might have looked intimidating, but the thing itself was also very intriguing.
Naturally, you swam closer.
The thing was fast, but luckily, so were you. You dived back down, your powerful tail bringing you a few body lengths up to the submerged bottom of the ship. Popping out of the water again, you looked all the way up its side.
Now that you were closer, you thought you heard something. The sounds were new to you, similar to whalesong. But this was deeper, choppier, and somehow harsher. You frowned in the direction of the noises. What was on this boat?
You circled it underwater—careful not to get too close—coming back up a few times to get another look from a different angle.
You had to admit, it carried an odd beauty about it. Something like this must have been built, but the craftsmanship was so intricate, and it was massive . . . .
You sprung up above water again some ways away from it. Perhaps this thing wasn’t as exciting as you’d initially thought. It was a pain to keep up with and the noises coming from it kept hurting your ears.
Just as you turned to leave, a movement caught your eye. There it was, a flash of gold just at the side of the ship. It looked vaguely . . . familiar.
You went closer again to get a better look, and it was then that you met a pair of golden eyes, looking much like those of your people of the sea.
The figure startled as soon as he saw you, blinking and squinting in your direction. He made more of those strange chattering sounds you’d kept hearing, looking behind him and frantically pointing at you with his outstretched hand.
Rude, you thought, but what was a merman doing all the way up there?
A second head appeared next to the first, this one with vibrant, spiky red hair. You experimentally waved at them in greeting, wondering why you couldn’t understand them. Maybe they were from a different ocean you'd never seen.
They both leaned over the side. It looked like they were trying to communicate something to you, but whatever it was, you didn’t get it.
The red haired one turned and left, but was quick to come back with a weird circular object. It was attached to a rope and had an open circle in the middle, just big enough to put the top third of your body through.
To your mild surprise, he tossed it over the side at you, and it landed with surprising accuracy only a tail length away. You swam over to it, picking it up out of the water. It was oddly light—which probably explained why it floated so easily on the waves—and was made out of some strange material.
You glanced dubiously back up at the faces on the side of the ship. They were looking at you with . . . distress? What was this thing? Was it some kind of gift? What were you supposed to do with it? You couldn’t hold it down under the waves, so how were you supposed to bring it back underwater with you?
Either way, you thought it would be rude to decline. You grabbed the rope that was tied to it. It looked as though they were still holding on to the other end. You really wouldn’t be able to take it anywhere if it was still attached to the ship.
You grabbed the rope and tugged. They held onto it. Frustrated, you tugged again. Looking up at their faces, you matched their expressions of confusion. What were you missing here?
Perhaps they were only trying to show it to you. You decided to follow through with your initial idea of putting it around the upper portion of your body. You lifted it over your head—you fit through it okay, at least—and soon it reached the submerged base of your tail.
You floated there for a second. Was this all it was good for? Kind of useless if you asked yourself. Again, you made up your mind to leave. You had better things to do than play silly games with the weirdos in the sky.
Before you could slip back out under the object, you felt yourself being pulled closer to the boat. Now what were they doing?
You frowned up the side again, but this time you couldn’t really see them. They must have stepped back further onto the boat. Intrigued, you let them pull you along with them. You got closer and closer to the side, and finally the rope connecting you to the other end slanted completely vertical. You adjusted yourself so you wouldn’t slide out. Perhaps they were trying to bring you up so they could meet you. You weren’t sure what they’d gain by that, seeing as you couldn’t understand them. Heck, they probably wouldn’t be able to understand you either. But you were still curious. What did the boat look like from up there? It wasn’t all that interesting from the underside, but maybe if you were able to see it from the top . . . .
The two strangers began to haul you out of the water. It was a little scary, you had to admit. Slowly, your body was extracted from the water. Waves slapped against your tail ever lower, and eventually you were fully suspended in midair. You clung tightly to the rope. Glancing back at the sea below, you realized it was a long way down, and the higher you went, the less you were comfortable with the idea of falling.
You'd never been all the way out of the water like this, and it almost felt as though you were flying like those seabirds you'd see living on islands. Except this wasn't as fun. You were meant to swim in the water, not get dragged through the air.
Finally you saw the rim of the ship, and you picked up on the grunting and labored breaths from the two weirdlings you’d seen earlier. You reached up and grabbed onto the side, hoisting your body up. Then you saw them.
These weren’t quite the mermen you were used to. The things that were pulling you up had legs.
You stared at them for a moment, watching fascinated as they walked towards you. Tearing your eyes away from their tailless, split bodies, you glanced back at their faces. Why did they look so concerned? Did they always look like that?
The blond one was the first to reach you. He was quick to grab your hand to help you over the railing, chattering something at you. You let him pull your body up a little higher, and then he froze. To your surprise, he let go of your hand, dropping your bodyweight and causing you to pitch forward. You slid gracelessly to the dry floor of the ship like some kind of overgrown eel, fins and tail meeting the floor of the boat with a wet thud.
You spluttered, annoyed, curling your scaled appendage closer into yourself. “What is this?!” you finally asked.
The blond one had run back to the redhead, pointing frantically and clearly panicked. The red haired one also looked shaken, but otherwise seemed somewhat more collected as he studied you.
“Whatever,” you mumbled, sliding the flotation object off of yourself. “I don’t want this thing anyway.”
You glanced around, taking in the ship up close. It was pretty cool, but in hindsight, it probably wasn’t worth the whole fiasco you’d gone through to get here. The floor was mostly bare, give or take a few stacked boxes here and there. You recognized a net hanging from a pole, one of which you’d seen countless before. Was this where they came from?
“Those things are dangerous,” you said, pointing at it. “I’ve had to cut a lot of animals out of them.”
It was then that the red haired one stepped closer to you. You drew back just a bit, suspicious.
Examining him, you took in the mismatched rings that adorned his ears, and the billowy off-white covering he wore over his chest. The front was open, exposing the tanned skin of his torso. Darker brown fabric covered his lower half, tucked into clunky coverings at the very bottom. Another strip of cloth was tied around his head, making his vibrant hair stick up in odd directions.
He crouched down so you wouldn’t have to crane your neck up to look at him. He tried to say something to you again, but this time his voice wasn’t so loud. It was still foreign to your ears, but it was low and smooth.
You gave him an apologetic expression. “Listen,” you said. “This was fun and all, but I should probably get going.”
You turned and tried to slide yourself closer to the side you’d come from. Much to your annoyance, your tail hindered your movements. You were used to the grace of the water, but now you felt heavy and clunky. Scowling, you tried to pull yourself to the railing with your arms, but nothing was cooperating with you. The boat swayed with the motion of the waves down below, and as soon as you figured you’d made progress, you’d have to fight even harder against the force pulling you back.
You felt something touch your tail, and you whipped around with a threatening hiss, baring your teeth. It was the redhead again, and apparently he’d been the first to notice the rope that had gotten tangled around the fins and scales of your tail. Maybe he was trying to help, but he was touching your tail. You could do it yourself.
Jerking the lower portion of your appendage, you were able to smack him away with your fins. Feelings hurt, he stepped back.
You grabbed at the rope, cursing the fact that you’d ever gotten up from your nap in the first place as you struggled to untangle yourself from the device that had brought you up here. You wondered how you had gotten stuck so bad as you tugged at the coarse material. Seriously, you were so done with this today. You vowed to never go up to another boat again in your life if you could only get off this one—
And then you saw him.
The blond must have left a while ago but now you saw who he’d come back with. It was another being like the other two. He was blond like the first one, but his hair was shorter, spikier, and reminded you of the pale yellow of the sun. He was bigger than the other blond, but smaller than the redhead. You didn’t think you’d ever seen a face so handsome, even among the mermen back where you lived. He bore a scowl on his face, similar to the one you’d been sporting seconds earlier. Strength and authority rolled off him in waves, not only in the way he carried himself but also in the respect he garnered from the others around him.
He was tall, he was hot, and now you were just staring.
The sexy weirdling grumbled something, and you honestly weren’t sure to whom it was intended for until he stepped forward. You were slower to pull away as he approached, almost drawn to him in a strange way.
He knelt in front of you, pulling out a sharp object from a hidden pouch on his hip. Your heart fluttered in momentary fear as he brought it closer to your tail, but soon you saw the way he reached for the rope. Without scarcely touching your scales, he pulled on the material and sliced through it, cutting you free in a few fluid motions. You were caught up in watching him work, silently in awe as his rough hands delicately moved over your body.
Soon, you were able to move again, but before you could, he straightened and lifted your body from the floor. You gasped, clutching at his broad shoulders as you were once again suspended in midair. But this time you felt secure; his arms supporting the weight of your body. He met your eyes for a split second, and you became lost in the pools of orangey-red. They were deep, and bright, and you felt as though you could gaze into them forever.
Then you were hauled above the railing and tossed over the side.
Weightless, you fell back to the sea from which you came. It was surreal, watching his pale face grow smaller and smaller as wind rushed around you and gravity pulled you further away.
No, you thought, still in a daze. You wanted to stay with him, to keep looking at him, to know his name—
But all too quick, your back hit the cold water of the sea, skin stinging from the impact. With an impressive splash, you sank down again to the place you called home.
You didn’t know how to feel now, watching from below as the ship surged on without you. You were astonished and confused, lost and frozen in the deep blue world that surrounded you.
It was then that you vowed to see him again, no matter what.
You were warm—a little giddy—and you were determined.
You were in love.
To be continued . . . .

I’m really intrigued by Rayla’s moonshadow assassin peers. I especially am interested in Andromeda because I think she is the only other girl in the group? Do you have any headcanons in how these teen/young adult assassins interacted? Do you think Rayla isolated herself from them because she was always iffy about taking a life? Also TDP finally colored their map and I know you live maps, find any new cool stuff? I especially love how there’s a frozen sea north and a spinning sea south, imagine the powerful Magic’s that channeled to make them.
Okay, so I jumped straight to the map, did 80% of it, and wandered away for a few weeks. I apologize, anon. Let’s get this going again:
I’ve got a few headcanons on the Moonshadow assassins! It seems likely that they hang out mostly with each other, when they hang out, to reinforce their teambuilding and to give them some socialization, since assassins tend to keep others at arm’s length. So I kinda figure they tend to roam as a pack on their evenings out in the village, if they’re not married to a non-assassin like Runaan is.
I think that could be part of the reason that Rayla might not have hung out with the others as much, too: Runaan wanted to be either training or at home with Ethari, so Rayla probably spent a lot of time doing those things just because he did them. And when Runaan was doing more serious training or missions, that’s when Rayla had her free time to run around the forest and make adoraburr friends.
Runaan could’ve probably insisted that she do something more assassiny with her free time. Shadow an assassin, do more studying, practice certain prescribed skills on her own. But he didn’t. He let her play. Soft assassin is soft!
Listen, anon, I have a fun headcanon for you about Andromeda--and by fun, I mean it’s really angsty half a second after you start thinking about it. Ready?
What if: Andromeda is Runaan’s half-sister. If they’re both Lujanne’s children by different assassin dads who kept dying in battle, but a Moon mage needs an assassin leader partner to defend Xadia with, and Lujanne knew her son Runaan wasn’t old enough to lead yet, so she burned through three or more husbands protecting him until Runaan was well trained enough to lead the assassins himself and had fallen in love with a mage who adored him and would be his partner in her place.
Andromeda looks a fair bit like Lujanne, too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Along with Runaan, they all have long hair, side tails bound in silver cuffs, and some form of braids. Andromeda’s hair is sectioned in front similarly to Runaan’s. Her accent sounds more British than Scottish, though she only has the one line: My eyes for truth. And Lujanne and Andromeda are the only two Moonshadow elves we’ve met who have medium blue horns, while Runaan’s are dark blue. Almost everyone else’s horns have purple or pink as their base color.
But then, see, Andromeda went on Runaan’s mission, and she died. Her spirit was the most aggressive in TTM, usually closest to Rayla with her sword out, as if she hated Rayla the most. If she had a vested family interest in Runaan’s mission succeeding, and then it went pear-shaped because of Rayla, that would make sense.
No matter if she’s related to Runaan or not, she’s wearing horn cuffs, so she was in a dedicated relationship of some kind, and that’s so sad. Someone’s missing her the way Ethari’s missing Runaan. :’((((
Anyway, it’s just a headcanon, but since you asked, there ya go.
Okay, on to my thoughts on the map, of which I have a normal and healthy amount:
The Map Border:
Everyone doodles in the borders. I love to see what they put there.
Starting in the upper left and going counter-clockwise, the five human crowns are cool
Cornucopia swirls center left look like an homage to Cabbage Man from ATLA
Bait is staring at Evenere. his home? Or maybe he just wants to eat the dragonfly on its logo
Human defender has a beard. Hairagorn. He's very heavily armored but has no helmet. Long hair is braided to rest on front of shoulder, like the blond elf in the painting at the Moon Nexus. Old timey hairstyle?
He’s defending Katolis Castle specifically. I wonder if the little white building is kinda random or if it’s supposed to represent the Banther Lodge. Nah, I have a better guess: that’s where Viren grew up
The crack in the map looks meta. It's been repaired somewhat. Makes me wonder if it's an in-world map, whose, who ripped it, and who fixed it. Sir Phineas Kurst seems like the kind of guy to almost shred his really cool map
The star behind Zym's egg has seven points
The two ships on the southern waters are western and eastern respectively. Tidebound elves from Singapore? Jack Sparrow would be proud
There is land just south of the Dragontail, wonder what’s there?
The leaves around the human figure are small and numerous while the Moonshadow elf has fewer but bigger leaves
The elf is standing in the way of one of the six leaves growing out of the rune rose and that leaf's curly tip seems to have been replaced with a curl of the elf's very long hair
The human pose is more offense and the elf pose is more defense. But the elf has two swords, and one has some wicked hooks in it.
Elf has 4 fingers instead of 3 so whether it’s in-universe or meta, they were drawn by a human :DDD
The elf's braid winds around their horn and I think that's clever
High collar shirt under protective layer, bracers and elbow gloves, bare biceps, complex shoulder getup, ornate hair that's butt long and partly braided, two long slightly curving swords... horn cuffs too. This is a Moonshadow assassin in the same gear Runaan's got, poised to defend the Xadian half of the map as the human is poised to defend his side
The rune rose isn't a compass. It has a two sided pointer and six primal runes. Just decorative I guess. ;)
More lettuces on right center.
Maybe a portaling caterpillar on the center knot? Little bug pal, I see you
“The Five Human Kingdoms” lettered in red, “Xadia” in blue. Giving me Stratego flashbacks. Even the flowers on their banners are color coded
Banners in the corners are similar but Xadia has more fluttery tips
Thunder drawn all attacky top center, does he have anything to do with the Frozen Sea being frozen?
Compass rose under Thunder’s wing
Dick island near the compass. Well, Duren is the breadbasket of the human lands. A most excellent cartography joke! 10/10 would chortle wholesomely again
The Human Kingdoms:
Neolandia
Capital Eboreus seems to be a lake city below a mountain and I'm here for all the Lake Town refs.
It's also the eye of the elephant shape
Not a lot of trees, mostly grasses or desert. Only borders Duren across a couple rivers/estuaries/sea channels
Heart shaped island next to elephant trunk
Land generally broken into several sections by sea/rivers
If it’s rivers, they seem to generate from the capital’s lake and flow in several directions. And they say there’s no magic left in the western lands! ;)
But if there was exactly one source of freshwater in a desert land, it makes sense that you’d find a way, magical or mechanical, to spread that lifegiving water in as many directions as possible so your people can thrive so kudos to Neolandia’s ancestors/Tidebound elves/whoever managed that, it’s brilliant
I can and will make up explanations for anything on a map. I adore worldbuilding
Del Bar
Two named locations. Since Del Bar’s national symbol is a serpent, I guess Serpentongue is the capital.
Hinterpeak is a sweet name. Looks like Helm's Deep with that retaining wall. What’s it for? Are there dwarves in this land? Is it an Earthblood stronghold? Maybe it’s like the Mines of Moria, and the Earthbloods were chased out and/or killed inside and now it’s full of nasty orcses but someone left a MacGuffin down there so *nudges hero* Off you pop.
Nice forests around the southern mountain range but northern DB is more arid or grassy lands like Neolandia.
Considering that crops grow well in Duren, which is farther north, I assume there is a massive meteorological gyre over the human lands, with a southern wind blowing down over the western realms and keeping them icy until the mountains of Hinterpeak block and divert them, protecting Evenere. The winds don't blow eastward without warming right up-- and causing thunderstorms in Katolis how about that-- because there is a warmer side to the gyre over Katolis and Duren, blowing tropical warmth and moisture north and providing rain for trees and crops alike. Most years, anyway.
How does the weather fail in Duren for seven years in a row, anyway? That seems like a Thunder issue. Unless it’s a Sunforge issue, which I’ll get to below.
Ahem.
Borders Neolandia, Duren, and Katolis across rivers, but most border is coastline.
Serpentongue probably got its name from the two river heads around it
Cluster of dead little cracks spawns a single river. Looks like someone cracked the tub and it drained away. I wonder how much of this landscape has been affected by the Mage Wars. Big watery basins have flooded and other spots seem dead. The lands may or may not actually touch depending on how deep some of these waterways are
Evenere
Looks like someone punched holes in the land with a giant pencil to make it a separate island. Broken outline with scattered islands
That Pawprint Isles has only four toes
Moon-shaped island is very crescenty indeed
Are these isles home to refugees or outcasts from Xadia? Listen, I want pirates and that sea looks pretty Caribbean to me
No capital city, hmmm what's that about? Is it underground, does it move? Maybe Fareeda’s capital is on the back of a world turtle and she’s constantly on tour around the island?
That arm of land ending in a peace sign, please can we get surfers
The hills emanating from that claw shaped headland look like something is sleeping under the island, hello yes I am here for giant immortal creatures please
Katolis
its capital is also called Katolis, the only human realm to use the same name twice
Weeping Bay could be a ref to the tears the humans shed after they reached the west. Or the Moonshadow elves as they left their forest for the east. Or both. Both, in this case, is bad but balanced
Boomerang island next to the Dragontail
The river the Dragaang rode on was going uphill
The watery slash in the land between Katolis and Del Bar is awfully straight. So is the one between Del Bar and Neolandia. I call magical warfare.
Katolis has a bunch of mountains in the east, part of an old natural border before the lava one appeared
Mt Kalik is probably volcanic. It's a standalone mountain and it's really tall. Rex Ignius maybe? Oh, probably not, I think I see him peeking on the other side of the map
The trees of Duren and Katolis are different then the western lands. Softer green, deciduous. And the land itself is yellower, warmer in tone
Forests centered on Mt Kalik
The Moon Nexus looks like an eye on a dragon head near the Dragontail, and Evenere looks like a severed wing (Yes I am still wondering where Luna Tenebris went, why do you ask)
Weeping Bay looks like the most natural body of water in the western lands
Three red little trees scattered around the Katolis map. Fruit trees? How very Moonshadow.
Duren
The only land border among all the human kingdoms is between Duren and Katolis. Maybe it used to be further south along the river?
Capital is Berylgarten, set on a lake. Beryl is a stone that’s usually green, blue, or yellow in color, very gardeny
Second smallest realm but the breadbasket of the human lands. Has several little forests and great tilled fields
Being a farmer in Duren is probably as awesome as being an assassin in the Moonshadow Forest; you do what you do for all your friendly kingdoms
Northernmost land is cold and craggy, named Skall's Hook along the sea
Third ship in the Frozen Sea is icebound and crushed. Looks western, indicating no possible passage
Lots of colored trees and shrubs as if fruitbearing, I keep comparing Duren to the Yakima Valley in Washington State
Where the lava reaches the Frozen Sea, it melts the ice next to Duren's mountains
Northern Xadia:
Lux Aurea
Most of the center lands of this map has warm tones for its ground. Maybe that’s because of the long reach of the warmth and light of Lux Aurea’s Sun Nexus, and only the lands that are just too far from it are truly cold and icy. It would explain why Duren is a breadbasket realm so far north--it’s just across the border from Lux Aurea.
If there’s anything to that, then I suddenly worry for the fate of all the human lands now that the Sunforge has gone dark. It’s early summer now in Xadia, and crops in Duren will be ripening soon... Unless the sun’s magic was helping them grow. This coming winter could be rough. Next winter, people will die. Unless they can purify the Sunforge again.
Also, I have to wonder if Duren’s seven years of famine had anything to do with Sunforge shenanigans. They’d have happened at Khessa’s command, and we know she despises humans. If she was responsible for all the struggles that humans had to go through without enough food for seven years, and then their desperate attempt to fix the problem by invading Xadia for a Magma Titan’s heart which extended and exacerbated the war, I can see why Aaravos might feel Queen Khessa deserved to die
The city’s shaped kinda like an Egyptian pectoral necklace on this map, and that’s super pretty and not at all ominous
Also that’s a lot of gold for a whole city and I wonder how they got it all
The Shiverglades and the Shards
These areas are north of Lux Aurea and seem cold but not very icy, even though the Frozen Sea is right there. More thoughtful glances at the Sunforge over this one. Is it warming the land, or not warming the sea? Both?
Shiverglades is a play on Everglades, so this is a cold swamp, which sounds super fun I’m sure. Permafrost, tundra maybe?
The Shards seem to be rock islands with ice mountains. Glaciers are cool.
I wonder if something broke those islands off on purpose. Have I mentioned how much I enjoy worldbuilding? Yeah, well, I like world-wrecking, too.
Storm Spire
Has a good view on everything that happens for miles, including Lux Aurea, the Midnight Desert, the Shiverglades, the Black Tundra, the Uncharted Forest, and Drakewood.
Defensible position, no other tall mountains nearby
Also able to alert others to danger, especially since Avizandum could teleport like lightning
The Midnight Desert
It’s pretty big! And it looks like it’s littered with ruins of columns and dead palm trees. Like something else used to be in that great space and then something Very Bad happened to it. Maybe there was one great city where all the elves could mix together, and then it got utterly obliterated and the elves all fled to their respective safe places around Xadia. A city of black stone, back when Aaravos wore a crown? Now pulverized to dust and surrounded by not one, not two, but three primal nexuses? Hmmm...
All the wisps could be heat from the sand, or spooky spirit hints, or just an ominous sign of danger from the snakes below, but the overall effect is that the land is unhealthy if not cursed
The oasis is marked, and it must contain a spring since it runs a river out to join the river that passes through the Moonshadow Forest
Also the actual oasis kinda resembles a blue lizard which is adorable and probably also terrifying
Moonshadow Forest
The Silvergrove is the only village marked in the forest, so in keeping with the other lands and general map legend rules, it’s likely the capital/central village for the Moonshadow elves
The village is marked by four round-roofed homes between two tall leafy trees that shelter and hide them. It’s a hybrid balance between the blocky manmade castles of the human lands and the actual forest around them, showing a blending with nature that even the Sunfire city of Lux Aurea did not embrace, with all its golden buildings
It’s a good-sized forest, and it kinda stretches thin to the east but there it tentatively connects to the Drakewood Forest
Moonstone Path to the west just chilling in the lava like a blank alignment chart. Moonstone Path is Chaotic Hot.
Southern Xadia:
Ruins of Elarion
Elarion is a city, and it’s been lost to the humans for a thousand years
The building outlines are squared-off towers like the more modern castles in the west, suggesting that humans in Xadia built for strength and defense as soon as they could. They felt vulnerable and created protections in their architecture. The three elven cities we see also play to their strengths, but those strengths include magic. Elarion’s humans had to find a different strength, and they went with craftsmanship and ingenuity
It seems to be the only human city from before the border was drawn
“Ruins” doesn’t necessarily mean no one lives there at all, but it’s been emptied of humans and no one else has maintained it since
It had a great position on a vast lake, with sheltering hills and easy sea access
Sea of the Castout
This inland sea has five inlets and outlets. It’s hard to be sure which is which with some of them, with the way the water is drawn on this map. But I’m kinda liking the idea that all the water swirlies are places where Tidebound magic has been placed over the millennia, so the water can do whatever it needs to do depending on circumstances. That goes for the human lands, too. Katolis backward river, you’re off the hook.
With a name like "Castout,” I wonder if it was some kind of universal toilet to flush away things you didn’t want--including humans--who might wash up near Elarion and start to build there. Yeesh.
The rivers that flow into this sea pass through or near the Moonshadow Forest, the Midnight Desert, the Storm Spire, Drakewood, and the Uncharted Forest. That’s a lot of drainage.
It’s pretty far from the Tidebound Archipelago, so maybe its name is referencing Tidebound elves who have left their home colony
Was this always a sea, or did something that Xadia wanted to forget get flooded and hidden in the depths?
The land around it seems open and hospitable. It could be a good place to build/rebuild in a time of peace.
The Far Reaches
Open grassland with low hills
Two of the hills look like giant boot prints
Several colorful trees which I hope are fruit trees
Bounded by two rivers from the Sea of the Castout
Looks homey tbh, great spot to retire to get away from everything if there were a war that really shook you up
Ocean Point
There’s a Star rune here, and it could mean many things
The closest other marked location is Elarion
If this was where Aaravos lived of his own free will, I can see why he’d take a shine to the humans. They were his neighbors.
If he is imprisoned here, it’s literally the furthest point in Xadia from the other elven realms, with the Moonshadow Forest being the closest one and Umber Tor not too much further but in a totally different direction. If they were trying to isolate him physically with a portable mirror to watch over him, that’s a good spot for it
Possible location that the cube is leading Callum toward? Portal to the Star Touch home plane? Aaravos’s seaside B&B? Trap street?
Eastern Xadia:
Drakewood
Umber Tor looks to be the tallest mountain in all of Xadia, save possibly for the Storm Spire. It’s more traditionally mountainy, with a nice snowcap. Since it’s labeled, I’m guessing it’s the Earth Nexus, under which an Earth Archdragon sleeps
Also there’s a giant yellowish-brown dragon chilling next to the Tor. Yeah, he seems nice. Rex Igneous, I presume?
Or maybe not, since the neighboring forest is called Drakewood. Maybe this woods is just where a bunch of Earth dragons hang out? Ezran and Pyrrah flew off and returned with a crew of Sun dragons from somewhere, so dragons must have communities too
The mountains that edge the sea are shaped roughly like a stone dragon in flight
Drakewood seems to be the forest closest to Umber Tor, with both deciduous and evergreen trees, though there’s a huge swath of wooded land here, to the north and to the southwest. I wonder what the locals consider the border where the Drakewood becomes the Uncharted Forest and why. The way the evergreens are drawn almost looks like a border, a sort of kingswood set aside for a specific use. Rex Igneous’s best toothpicks?
Uncharted Forest
Okay this is a properly magical name, very mysterious. But uncharted by whom? People with charts? This might be a Sir Phineas Kurst name, which is outsidery, and it makes me wonder if the locals/neighbors have their own name for it, which the human explorer never learned, a la “Thunder” for Avizandum
Maybe “Uncharted Forest” just means no one ever turned those trees into charts though, old growth ftw
If no one lives here, will someone move here? If someone lives here, who are they? Earthblood elves? Moonshadow elves? Humans? This mystery, it calls to me
the trees are mostly deciduous and fill basically all of this whole section of land, up against the mountains and the rivers, so it seems very fertile land indeed
Earthblood elves could live here, but there is no city marked. Maybe because we haven’t gotten that far in the show, or maybe that’s the wrong sort of descriptor for how the Earthbloods live and organize. Maybe the whole forest is their city, like Pando, the interconnected quaking aspen clone forest
The northernmost part of this forest lies right between the Storm Spire and the Tidebound Archipelago, so it might get a regular flyover route for migration or messages
Yes, this forest is the most interesting place in Xadia to me, I desperately want to learn more about it
Black Tundra
Yeah this place isn’t ominous
Similar to the Shiverglades, but where that has shrubbery, the Black Tundra has single dead trees and creepy curving spikes. Scorched? Poisoned? De-magicked?
The water north of this area isn’t frozen, and with a lake to the south and a river and a moderate mountain range, the whole area looks like it would otherwise be decently habitable, but instead it’s cold and black
Is climate change a thing here, or will we get a nice horrible disaster instead?
Tidebound Archipelago
These islands have dotted lines around them, like they’re submerged at high tide, or maybe made of shifting sand that literally moves around like sand dunes across a desert, or perhaps they’re exactly at sea level with half their civilization in the air and half underwater or in cool bubbles, or maybe the islands actually float
Maybe the Tidebound elves even sank them on purpose for defensive purposes
The archipelago is about even latitudinally with the Storm Spire Lux Aurea, Berylgarten, and Eboreus so they probably get pretty nice weather
There’s no ice in sight here in any direction along Xadia’s east coast, so presumably the prevailing current is a warm one
do they have bridges connecting the islands? Ferries, animals who give them a lift across?
the islands have quite a bit of space on them. I wonder if there’s a big population, maybe a shifting population? Do Tidebound elves migrate up and down the coast like gray whales and return to the islands for certain holidays or social events?
This is probably the hub of the Tidebound elves’ culture, but the sea surrounds the whole land and infiltrates it with many rivers and lakes. The Spinning Sea and the Frozen Sea are pretty firm Do Not Enter signposts, but a determined Tidebound could get around either one if they wanted to
What I’m not seeing here is a city. Either it’s not been marked yet, or that’s not a thing that Tidebound elves have in their culture. If they don’t have a city, they’re possibly migratory in family groups, or maybe they stick to small villages like the Moonshadows do, but with even less central leadership

haha anyways genshin must be on some wild fucking shit if they think theyre gonna try and drag out their main story for like 2 years. on god having like half a year between main chapters of its already weak spindly little story is like mindboggling decision i do not trust your storytelling skills at all to make any of the hype worth it but i also think thanks to the general playerbases inability to read they will continually feel disappointment at how poor genshins main story content is and how it is purveyed to the reader especially in comparison to the lore which is completely jarring in quality of delivery.
in the archon quest at the end of liyue chapter you get a lore dump from zhongli where he just stands there and gives you like 3 quest prompts about shit that exists for no reason other than idk “they needed to put the plot threads in there asap and they forgot they had an entire world to do it in” and then that mf disappears. forever. literally exiled from the overworld unless you pay like ninety quid to summon him on his banner. not to mention every single other npc you meet will never appear again outside of their instanced quests. it’s such a weird jarring end point that you’re left stranded in and its not only a frustratingly awkward delivery, it honestly just seems pointless. why couldn’t there have been an extended epilogue that involves talking to the npc character FROM inazuma, talking to beidou who is a pirate with an electro vision about idk ... travel and her ELECTRO vision being granted which is a feat she in known for in the lore of liyue folk. it could even be someone from the qixing like ningguang who surely would know about the status of foreign nations or keqing who has an electro vision and would absolutely have something to say about baal’s stance on things and her condescension towards humans. god it could still even be zhongli just space it out, let him invite us to dinner and chat over liyue cuisine and let inazuma come up naturally thgouh paimons huge appetite to eat new things. not only would the pacing be better, the plot threads be put in a way where you dont immediately forget them because they’re being rapidfire talked at you, but it would be a great way to make the character seem like theyre people with lives and not just trying to move the plot along and be on their way.
conversely, the story of arundolyn and rostam, the legends of mondstadt and the ordo favonius, the lion and the wolf, the building hints towards the cataclysm of khaenri’ah and what kind of nation earned the scorn of the gods -- its all slowly fed to you piece by piece linked through artifacts, world lore, in-game books, weapons and sometimes the world itself. you uncover things as you explore and the more thoroughly you explore - the more you discover! it’s rewarding, it feels natural and its some of the most fun you have piecing together stories and building out this strange world like some kinda anime historian and it encourages theorycrafting rather than a concrete set of events and characters being straightforward. its genuinely interesting that theres a whole society and cast of characters from the days of yore who are intimately connected with our current cast and the world we live in but also very much their own interesting characters who hold their own legacies and wills, carving them into the stars for ill or good.
its almost as if the main quest writers and the lore writers are completely separate, work on different floors and they dont ever meet because why ... why on earth would you deliver critical parts of the main story in such a blatantly poor way and make it have none of the nuance and intrigue as the worldbuilding? in a game that is designed for the express purpose of making people sympathetic and invested with characters to spend silly money on them? you think your paper thin story is going to let you do that? no gacha game is allowed to have storytelling subpar to the most average middle of the pack lightnovel and get away with being a gacha game. your story has to have at least a few moments where i am dazzled, daresay fucking delighted, at least a second where i have to stop and say ‘this is cool as hell’ or ‘FUCK ITS HAPPENING’ or else it is well and truly expendably worthless non-product! you have to be a little more ambitious than making some normie shit and try and make the story have a little heart! i dont doubt that they can do it, im sure there are talented writers there since i like a lot of the characterisations but man, let em free you need them no more than ever
the only thing i can think of that explains how watered down the story feels in comparison to lore, is a fear of making people ‘read too much’ in the main quests which honestly doesnt seem to be much of an issue to them. lanternrite wasnt that long but the sheer amount of npc dialogue feels staggering because its all ultimately ... inconsequential. we have no investment into these npcs and theres like 15 odd quests of it, it goes from cool world flavour text to genuinely feels like its taking up space all because they are trying to endear you to the lives of these generic npcs when you’d rather know like even one thing about chongyuns life and daily routine or xinyans performances. being able to see kaeya for one second even was the most fun and even then i was still disappointed cause its like bro? you didnt even let him do anything and it was JUST him? in the world there are so many characters explicitly referenced but never utilised and it makes their complete absence even more noticeable and frankly fucking baffling? not even fate episodes for all of our 12 SRs? actually nevermind, even the character stories are somehow unforgivably generic!
honestly i feel like the best event so far was the unreconciled stars event but by my standards it definitely felt like ‘solid gacha game event story’ with a touch of something more interesting with the inclusion of scaramouche’s lore insight. i was hoping this his how events would be in genshin, i really thought that this was the ‘standard’ but for some reason, its beginning to seem like that event was a bit of an outlier? i would gladly take less events and have them be more like the unreconciled stars event, with character interactions and slowly improving and hashing out who these characters are over never-ending carousel of random events that are mostly fetch-quests or fluff.
idk man its just a strange mess of me enjoying genshins world and theorycrafting, loving playing the game and exploring but feeling like the ball is not bein dropped but violently slammed into the ground by the sheer lack of character content whilst being praised by everyone under the sun for ‘story’ and ‘characters’. m*hoyo do better bitch! you already made such a good roster of characters now fuckin do something with them! stop releasing new characters without bothering with any of the existing ones! i beg of you!

I too would like to see this
I’m gonna make it more gender neutral just because :)
Let’s be real Peter Parker only has a few flaws but the biggest one is that he cannot keep any secret
*Makes web fluid in chemistry while also expecting no one to know that he is the Spider-Man*
*Vaults over school gates while also expecting no one to know that he is the Spider-Man*
*Jumps out of the bus window in front of his whole school and puts on the Spider-Man mask while also expecting no one to know that he is the Spider-Man*
Anyways
So this relationship would have slipped out real fast
“And Y/N was like-”
“Who’s Y/N?”
Peter would get all blushy hehe
“Just my friend.” His voice cracks smh
loser
Every single person in that room knows that that is a LIE
“A close friend?”
“Uh, yeah, we’re pretty close, I guess.”
“How close?”
“I don’t really know how to judge how close we are-”
“Judging by the fact that your cheeks are as red as your suit, I say we’ve discovered something.” Tony just kinda smacks Peter a bit u know
Peter is on FIRE
A few weeks pass and you and Peter are standing outside on campus after school
Just talking
And a car pulls up, rolls down the window, and the person inside yells at u
You don’t quite hear what they’re saying but you heard your name and Peter’s and Peter pales at the voice
Come to find out that it’s Tony Stark
:))))))
You just kinda
:o
Peter is so red omg
He finally grabs your hand (his is all sweaty smh) and runs over to the car
Tony leans out the window all smooth smh
“I’m Tony Stark, but I bet you already knew that.”
“I’m Y/N Y/L/N.” You’re just kinda :o still
“Um... we were gonna walk.”
“Change of plans, we’re never gonna get to see you this embarrassed again, so I’m kidnapping you both and taking you back to the tower. Everyone else already knows, there’s no escape.”
You’re almost peeing your pants bc Iron Man is telling you that he’s kidnapping you and that there is no escape
Peter just sighs, softly apologizes to you, and tugs you into the back of the car
You and Peter are frantically texting in the back like ‘is this legal’ ‘I don’t think laws apply to him anymore’ ‘if I’m not home before dinner I’m gonna be dead and not even Iron Man can save me’
You get to the tower and Tony is like aH u gen z kids and ur phOnes come on inside :)))
Tony puts a hand on both of your shoulders and steers you inside the tower
The elevator ride is so bad omg it’s just Peter being so awkward
“Is Captain Rogers here?” (Y’ALL I WROTE MR ROGERS AT FIRST KABGANJDFD)
“Of course, he’s about to lost a bet with me that Y/N actually exists. He didn’t think you were capable of it, kid.”
Peter is about to cRy
“And Ms. Romanoff?”
“Yeah. And Bucky, and Bruce, and Thor. You’re not getting cut any slack tonight.”
The elevator doors open and you go to step out but then Tony turns around and smiles at you
It’s like half genuine
“Welcome, Y/N.”
You walk into literal chaos
There is someone upside down on the couch (upon further inspection it is Thor, the god of tHuNdEr)
Two people are what looks like wrestling on the ground and honestly it just looks really gay (smh Bucky Steve can u not)
Captain America is the first one to notice u and shoves the other guy off
Frowns for a second
Pulls out his wallet
Hands Tony a ten dollar bill
“Wait, you really had a bet going?” Peter is so betrayed.
“Parker, you can’t even order at a restaurant without stuttering and nearly giving up, was I really supposed to believe you were smooth enough to land yourself a relationship?”
Peter is :(
The other guy gets off of the floor and u see that his whole arm is metal
You’re seriously almost crying u are so scared
There is like
such a dad
Just reading in the corner
And he looks up and sees you
He stands and politely introduces himself to you
“Hello Y/N, my name is Bruce Banner, it’s nice to meet you.”
He is the only normal one smh
A woman stands up from the couch and she’s not visibly armed or anything but you can feel your soul leave your body because she is just so so intimidating
She walks over and gives u a lil smile
“I’m Natasha Romanoff. It’s nice to finally meet you.”
The man with the whole metal arm and Captain America stand up
They each introduce yourself and wow you just shook Captain America’s hand how does that feel
Steve likes you ngl he thinks you’re neat
Bucky doesn’t give you his metal arm to shake and you are thankful for that because you think you might pass out any second if he did
They invite you to sit down so you do and then Peter sits right next to you but then Steve sits on your other side and you’re so nervous
They’re watching some dumb action movie but like they’re the avengers that’s their whole lives
Bucky stays quiet but will laugh whenever Steve makes a crack about Peter being too awkward to have a relationship yet
Tony Steve and Natasha just destroy Peter
“Once time he was trying to swing upside down and-”
“Mr. Stark, please don’t-”
“And he not only fell, but he took the ceiling tile with him!”
“Mr Stark!”
“I had to replace that myself!” Tony just >:( at Peter and Peter is like o no
Natasha keeps ruffling his hair and each time she does Peter blushes redder and redder and you’re laughing more and more
They probably invite you for dinner ngl
I loved this idea so I made it super long oops

The League of Villains Plays DnD AU
(Saw a post by @bunny-loverxiv last night that reminded me I’ve had this stupid thing in my drafts unfinished for over a year now. I’m not sure I’ll ever have time to come back and finish it, but in the spirit of what I posted earlier, here it is, in all its unfinished.. glory...)
Since I asked for a League of Villains plays DnD AU and no one delivered, alas, I guess I’ll just do all the work myself!
So, without further ado:
Shigaraki Tomura’s Character Sheet:
Race and Appearance: Fallen Aasimar, with hair pale as the flesh of wraiths and eyes like two burning pools of blood, reflecting out from the infernal pits of the abyss. His rippling muscles under his bone-white skin carry the scars of his uncountable victories, and when his corrupted celestial powers radiate forth, ghostly skeletal wings rise--
( “Do I have to keep reading? This is really long...”
“It’s important!”)
Alias: “Zephiroth”
(”Isn’t that the guy from Final Fantasy?”
“No! That was Sephiroth! My character’s name is totally different!”)
Class: Oath of Conquest Paladin/Hell Knight
Motto: Dim the Ray of Hope
A dread knight whose armor is black with the blood of his enemies; to stand against him on the field of battle is to know true fear, and none have called themselves his equal and lived to tell the tale. His menacing aura is a cloud of evil righteous murder that spreads across the land as he advances, and everywhere he travels is seeped into the deepest of despairs. Civilizations tremble before the darkness of his impossibly dark darkness.
(“Did you run out of adjectives?”
No, I meant exactly what I said.”)
Also, collects the severed hands of his conquests.
(”Tomura-kun, this isn’t a character, this is just you!”
“Collecting body trophies is standard lore for conquest paladin; you’d know if you read Xanathar’s Guide.”)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
(“Shigaraki Tomura, I am not sure this alignment fits with the character you’re describing--”
“I wrote the campaign, so good’s whatever I say it is.”
“Boss, doesn’t playing in your own campaign defeat the purpose? Knowing everything ahead of time’s a great idea!”
“Shut up, I don’t care about spoilers.”)
Backstory: Zephiroth the Bloody swore an oath to complete the conquest of his father, King Jenovo, who fell in battle to his eternal rival and estranged foolish younger brother, Nimbus Might ( “You know, I really think I’ve heard these names before...”). Jenovo’s quest was undoubtedly a noble one: to reunite the brothers’ separated kingdoms under a single legitimate banner--and its single legitimate ruler. The two brothers clashed in a battle of titans that shook the entire world, and though he was in the wrong, Nimbus Might reigned supreme in the end, and took Jenovo’s life and kingdom both. The death of his father crushed the last remnants of joy and love in young Prince Zephiroth’s black heart and now he will stop at nothing to put an end to Nimbus Might’s reign by turning every symbol of his false kingdom to dust.
Notable Stats and Weapon: +5 Intimidation, +5 Persuasion; greatsword and shield wielder.
Tomura is a quintessential min-maxer; he made everyone else take the standard array for stats but... “rolled” for his.
(”This old man’s been reviewing the character sheets, Shigaraki, and couldn’t help but notice some discrepancies in the party’s stats compared to yours--”
“You’re welcome to not play. Ever.”
“Must have been a trick of the light!”)
Carrying: The holy relic “Lavos”
(”Isn’t that just from Chrono Cross?”
“I think you mean, Khrono Kross, Spinny.”)
The relic is a glowing black and red container imbued with a hellish aura, containing magical bullets said to be formed from the blood of the time goddess, allowing Shigaraki to permanently unwind his opponents’ powers. Limited use, 5 times.
Dabi:
Race and Appearance: Tiefling.
(“Did you not even bother to write an appearance?!”
“My character has the same appearance as me.”
“That’s not even possible. Tieflings are supposed to have horns!”
“Okay, my character has the same appearance as me with horns.”)
Alias: “Dabi”
(”You can’t name your character after yourself!”
“But I’m not named Dabi.”)
Class: Phoenix Sorcerer
Motto: Ashes to Ashes
(”You can’t play this class either, it isn’t canon.”
“You told me to pick one from the wiki; ain’t my problem you didn’t specify.”
“I said no homebrew!”
“And that means... what?”)
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
(”You ignored my instructions about our alignment too, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, but you said ‘good’ so I assumed I misheard.”
“We’re the protagonists of this story--our cause is just!”)
Feats and Skills: ...Hmm, for some reason, many things have been written and then crossed out?
(“W-What have you done?! You can’t just modify things however you feel! Why would you even swap out Nourishing Fire for an Elemental Affinity that deals ice damage?! And did you just scratch out ‘long rest’ and put ‘short rest’ here? That’s OP!”
“When the hell have any of you let me get a long rest?”
“Animal Handling as a skill, seriously?!”
“Figured you’d give me some monsters to tame.”
“Go fuck yourself!”
Shigaraki was, in fact, planning on there being monsters for Dabi to tame.)
Backstory: A traveler with a shadowy past.
(”That’s... your whole backstory? Are you freaking kidd--”
”Aww, come on Dabi, this bio is lame! Oh, I know, I know! You’re actually a prince in disguise, exiled from his kingdom and seeking vengeance on his father, the one who left him horrifically burned and on the brink of death, which caused you to be rescued by the soul of a lonely phoenix, and at the end of your quest, after reclaiming your rightful throne from your evil father, you free the phoenix who possessed you to save your life, but then it returns and swears its eternal love to you! Eehee!”
“We’re...not doing that.”
“You can’t do that anyways, it completely undermines my lore. There are only two kingdoms in this world, and I’m going to be the ruler of both of them.”)
Notable Stats and Weapon: +3 Deception, +4 Insight; wields darts.
(”But why do I even have to pick a weapon? It says right there I have Burning Hands.”)
Carrying: A shard of never-melting ice in the shape of a three-petaled flower; it exudes a calming chill even when wreathed in the wildest of fires. Looking at it makes you feel... melancholy?
(”Why is this the only section with detail?! If you could put this much effort in here, you should have taken the rest seriously too!”)
Mr. Compress:
Race and Appearance: Human, a man in the prime of his life, with a roguish glint in his eye and a rakish gold mustache above his mysterious smirk. There’s an artfully placed scar below his right eye that speaks to a life of the blade and adventure, and his pressed linen and metallic brocade doublet belies his nature as a man of impeccable taste. His jaunty black bandana is always pulled low over his eyes, but mischief seems to twinkle out from beneath the accompanying black mask nevertheless.
(“Oh, I like it! A lot! Hey, hey, will you rewrite mine for me? Make it like yours but cuter!”)
Alias: The Dread Pirate Roberts
(“Huh? The first part is good, but why “Roberts”?
“Well, no one would surrender to the Dread Pirate Westley.”
“What are you snickering about, Kurogiri?”
“Nothing at all, Shigaraki Tomura.”)
Class: Multi-class Swashbuckler and School of Conjuration Wizard
Motto: To the Pain!
(“These two classes don’t compliment each other at all. You should change to Hexblade at least!”
“As you wish.”
“Kurogiri’s laughing again. What are you two hiding? Tell me!”)
Mr. Compress knew full well the classes he picked didn’t mesh; he just lives for the shits and giggles. He’s actually been playing DnD longer than Toga’s been alive, but where’s the fun in telling Tomura that?
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Skills: Acrobatics, Persuasion, Performance, Sleight of Hand
(“Okay, but am I the only one who actually created a real character instead of a self-insert? DnD’s a role-playing game; isn’t the whole point to use your imagination?!”
“Ain’t our fault your real self is too boring to be a decent character, Lizard.”
“You never miss an opportunity to insult me, do you, asshole?!”)
Backstory: Although he came from unremarkable origins, Westley Roberts found himself thrust on to the path of great destiny when the merchant ship on which he was employed was attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts--
“How can he attack his own ship? You forgot your own name, didn’t you?”
“Not all, Shigaraki! I’m not that old!”
--but when Roberts heard the tale of Westley’s quest to prove himself for the one he loved--
“Wait, who is this other character now? There was no love interest listed before!”
“Just let me tell the story!”
--Roberts was overcome by the depth of Westley’s tale of woe and decided to name him his successor, passing down the title of Dread Pirate Roberts--
“Can I change my character to a Dread Pirate?”
“No, Dabi!”
“I’m just sayin’, why was I not informed of this option?”
--sothathecouldmildlyterrorizethewatersaroundhishomekingdomandfinallyamasstherichesneededtoimpresshischarminglove. PHEW! Thank you for letting me finish!
Notable Stats and Weapon: +4 Dexterity, +5 Charisma; wields a rapier with impeccable skill. Is definitely not left-handed. Carrying: A Rodent of Unusual Size. Excellent distraction. Also edible.
“What is wrong with everyone in this room?!”
And the rest of the League I didn’t finish, but:
Spinner: A gorgeous lady Argonian who spits beams of pure light--
“No, this is too cool. Change it.”
“Awww come on, Shigaraki, just let me have this--”
“Change it.”
Toga: Tabaxi assassin. ON A QUEST FOR LOVE. (May or may not have decided this after peering over Mr. Compress’s shoulder during character creation time.)
Twice: Halfling wizard. None of his stats make sense because he couldn’t make up his mind where to put them.
Hawks: Aarakochra bard. Entirely useless. That asshole who rolls to seduce everything.
Kurogiri: The DM. But not by choice.
There’s no Giran or Gigantomachia because I started writing this before either of them were really “part” of the League. Use your imaginations~

Ateez in Seoul, 8 and 9 February 2020
Olympic Hall at Olympic Park
No one will believe this but I actually had my holiday with @flywithturtles planned before I knew the dates coincided with Ateez's Seoul concert dates. But it's true! I have the WhatsApp conversations to prove it!! Anyway I secured the tickets and all was well.
This is the first concert I've been to where they were handing out masks, making sure everyone had hand sanitizer and checking temperatures as you entered. Haha. Well they also checked our temperature going into the Line Friends store that day so, that's corona virus life. I was actually really worried the concerts would be cancelled, given so many other events have been, so it was a relief that it went ahead.
Structurally this is the same as the show I saw in August last year, after Wave/Illusion: starting hard with pirates, a lighter middle section, and a mythology-heavy last third. And then the encore which went for ages.
What's great to see is that the gaps and pacing downsides of the previous year have been corrected and improved. The pacing has been tightened up, the banter and ments flow much more smoothly and the show just feels very professional and well run.
Here's my post about last year's show: https://popliar.tumblr.com/post/187095347758/ateez-in-sydney-11-aug-2019
It's a shock to realise they've only been around one year four months but they were able to fill out a full 2.5 hour set, every song solid. And KQ spent proper money on this, the production was good - it's not like LAVISH but there were good stages and fancy screens and new VCRs and plenty of back up dancers, and it all worked well. There were maybe too many fireworks on the first night (I hate it when it obstructs the choreo) but they'd adjusted well on the second night.
Surprising but welcome - they had English subs for some of the ments. I don't think they were "live" subs because sometimes they'd get ahead of what the members were saying. But it was helpful. Even without them, body language and tone says a lot. Though I'm regretful that I don't understand Seonghwa's acrostic poems or all of their stupid jokes lol.
The show is called Fellowship and they leaned into it hard, asking Atiny to be part of their shared journey and to stick with them forever. It's a familiar refrain from other shows, but each time I find it both surprising and effective - this very overt, explicitly stated entreaty to be a fan, to enter into this imagined relationship, the appeal to reciprocity. "We've made you happy, make us happy too, be with us and we'll be with you."
But you can know a thing and it can still be effective. I did love the shows. I want them to be happy too!
A list of observations and random things:
Spoilers follow, I'd put it behind a cut but I can't figure out how on mobile haha
OK REALLY SPOILERS NOW
-first VCR to open the show expanded on the Treasure theme.
-Desire opens with blindfold choreo. Was this a gift for me? THANK U.
-for Lights, they had cute moments where they held up little speech bubbles over each others heads. They paired up with Hongjoong and Mingi, San and Wooyoung, Seonghwa and Yunho, and Yeosang and Jongho. Both nights, Woosan held hands. On the second night Yunho held Seonghwa's hand and Seonghwa was like a shy maiden. Mingi and Hongjoong had very strong flirty energy. Yeosang and Jongho are cute.
-the VCR in between part 1 pirates and part 2 fun boys showed what felt like a series of different dimensions? An ocean, a mountain, fields of flowers, cosmic surrealism, etc. As though each of them was alone somewhere in time and space.
-During If without you, they threw out balls to the crowd as gifts (mini riots ensued). Mingi put the empty basket on his head both nights, what a beautiful fool.
-Night 1 was the first time with the light stick! Hongjoong announced its official name: Lightiny (light of destiny) but also Tinybong lololol. The light stick is super pretty. I was tempted but didn't have time the first night. The second night it was sold out when I arrived!!!
-The VCR in between parts 2 and 3 is the really intriguing one. It paired them up into the Lights pairs again. Yeosang and Jongho searched for each other in a hall of billowing drapes. Mingi and Hongjoong were rockstars (with great lipstick). San and Wooyoung were mirrorverse versions of each other. Yunho and Seonghwa put together the pieces of a puzzle in a set that reminded me of both Treasure and Wonderland.
-In the intro to Say My Name on the first night, Hongjoong went halfway down the stairs then turned around, went back and grabbed his mic, then went down again lol. The second night he very firmly took his mic before descending the stairs lol.
-The final VCR before the encore showed them uncovering items on pedestals as though in a museum: a camera, a gramophone, a painting, a book of poetry by Yeats... Then they all created a painting together. When viewed through a red screen (like the puzzles in their albums) the pattern revealed a compass. They then all showed their wrists to reveal each had a compass tattoo.... WHAT IS THIS OT8 SOULMARK FIC!!!!!
-They said they had planned for every audience member to have this compass stamp (the Fellowship again) but it was cancelled due to health concerns. But we could see it with our true eyes, right???? On the second night, the 99s swarmed Seonghwa at this point to try to look down his shirt. I see. I see. (Later on Hongjoong also tried to peek into Mingi's shirt also fine just fine.)
-Early in the show Hongjoong said there would be clues through the show about the next steps in their concept/narrative. The hourglass and compass were very recurrent but these are not new. Hmm. I wonder.
-In one ment on night 1, Jongho spoke to all his hyungs informally and it was HILARIOUS. He did something similar on the second night, patting Yunho on the head and pinching Wooyoung's chin etc.
-During Star 1117 on the first night, Hongjoong and San started crying. Then in the following ment, they and Yunho and Wooyoung were crying, and Seonghwa and Jongho were teary. Yunho cried so hard (missing his grandfather!) that during Hongjoong's ment, Mingi quietly went over and gave him a towel. There were like five members in between that he passed to give him the towel, it was so sweet I'll cry. Night 2 felt more joyful and upbeat.
-Some ppl really left way too early like before the encore. The encore is half an hour long omg! You missed out on so many songs!!!!!
-On night 1 between main set and encore the crowd didn't quite know what to do. Huge kudos to the fans who led some cheers otherwise it would have been so quiet. Second night was better and also they kept the light sticks on while we were waiting which added to the atmosphere.
-They didn't sell a couple of sections in the hall at all, they were curtained off. It's interesting to think BTS had their first Muster here at around the same point in their careers. Like BTS, Ateez too are more popular globally than at home. They were beaten quite handily in voting on music shows by SF9 this comeback, who are more popular at home than internationally.
-It is great being in a huge fandom like BTS but also you know this is actually a great time to stan a group like Ateez. They're big enough to be exciting and have good shows, they are interesting and still developing, they're still playing intimate venues... They're good!!!!!
-A few of them had fake neck tattoos. San helpfully labeled himself "San" on the second night lol.
-Hongjoong briefly went off stage during sunrise On night 2. Hopefully just a technical issue.
-Treasure and Precious choreo start and end in the same place, echoing their musical connection.
-They had different encore outfits for Answer each night, before changing into hoodies. On night 2, Yeosang saw some of the others had scarves/banners tucked into their back pockets and was like "where's mine????" Instead of a banner, Yunho had a baseball cap. Seonghwa took his off and Hongjoong tied it around Seonghwa's wrist.
-For Star 1117, everyone held up their mobile phone lights. On night 2, San repeated the request in English too. Very pretty to see all the lights.
-On second night, Seonghwa and San got their mics and necklace tangled up during a ment lol.

Apprentice April
I’m a little late but I’m going to do Apprentice April!
Tumblr media
(sprite by Jilljoycearts )
(banner by me)
1. The Basics.  What is your character’s name?  How old are they?  How tall are they?  Skin color?  Eye color?  Hair color?  Gender identification?
Captain Faunalyn Catrìona “Fable” Amastacia
Half-elf || Bard || Pirate
Age:25 (ish timelines are wild)
Skin: Olive
Eyes: amber gold
Hair: Cinnamon brown Wild curls
Height: 5”0
Gender: Cis woman (she/her)
Fable started her life as my very first d&d oc. I love her so dearly and she was way to perfect for Julian for me not to use her as my arcana mc. That being said her backstory is the same up to the point she started questing in our campaign. In the Arcanaverse it is after her failed mutiny she ends up in Vesuvia rather than adventuring with the party. I.e the arcanaverse is AU for her and I try to tag it so it’s less messy. How did she get there? Dimension door? The lord of portals? Me pretending the places from our homebrew d&d campaign exist in the Arcana Universe? Who knows! (I sure don’t)
2.  Love Interest.  Who does your character love?  What attracted them to that particular LI?
Fable is a Julian girl through and through. They are both rowdy swashbucklers for a start. They are both very flirty and adventurous. She’s always been a sucker for the roguish sort and Julian was basically in love the first time he saw her. More than that, however, Fable is a bit of Gamophobia and has always felt like a temporary fixture in other people’s lives. Julian’s dedication to her, while sometimes overwhelming gives her some stability. Julian cares so deeply for others and Fable can be a little selfish. Fable is very assertive and quick to call Julian on his self-flagellation. Fable is fiercely independent and reminds him she’s his partner not a damsel in distress. For as much as they have in common, they also are opposites in a lot of ways and bring out the best in each other.
3. Familiar.  Does your character have a familiar?  How did they meet?
Fable has a fae songbird named Bonnie. She was a gift from Fable’s father when she was young.
4. Hobbies.  What kinds of things does your character like to do for fun?
She’s a bard so music is the obvious one! She sings, plays herdy gerdy, lute, and pan flute. She loves to drink and party. She loves sailing and finds a lot of comfort in being on the water.
5. Hidden talents.  Is there something neat that your character can do?  Tie a cherry stem into a knot with their tongue?  Say any word backward perfectly?
She can Knit really well
She can hold her breath longer than most people
6. Magical talents.  Is there a specific type of magic that your character excels at?  Any magic they aren’t so great at?  Or do they actually shy away from magic altogether?
Strengths:
Bardic Magic
Nature Magic/Wood elf magic
Divination
Dimension Door Conjuration
Polymorphing & Illusion magic
She is VERY superstitious and she’s terrified of necromancy and the undead (Ironic for her Arcanaverse cannon)
7. Interaction.  How does your character typically interact with people?
By charming the pants off them, sometimes literally! She’s quick to make allies and friends. She knows just how to butter someone up.
8. Romance.  What is something that your character and their LI love to do together?  How do they show affection?
Fable’s love languages are quality time, physical touch and gifts.
I HC Julian’s as quality time, physical touch and words of affirmation.
They love to sail together. The sea was such a fundamental part of both their lives. They go dancing at the Raven and get sloshed. They are almost always touching when they are together, holding hands, brushing against each other.
9. Travel.  Does your character like to travel outside of Vesuvia?  How often?  For how long?  What kinds of things do they do away from home?
Fable can not be suck in one place for too long. It makes her restless and she craves adventure and a change of scenery. I’d like to think she and Julian take piracy back up for a while post-game.
10. WTF.  Has anything just…weird ever happened to your character?  Something that made them stop and go “What just happened?!”
Find out she died from the plague was a pretty major one.
11. Crime.  Has your character ever been arrested?  If so, what did they do?  Have they ever helped stop a crime?
Oh boy, yes she has. She was raised in a city run by pirates and thieves, known as the “city of freedom.” She definitely doesn’t respect authority and has been known to have a few too many.
12. Secrets.  What is a secret that your character has?  Are they in line for the throne in a far off land?  Was there this one time at band camp…?  Are they secretly involved in an assassin’s guild?
I would say she has secrets per say, just that she’s a bit evasive about her feelings and past.
“None of us really know Fable. Anyway… Fable is so weird. I’d love to meet her someday.”
On a darker note, I suppose the fact a lot of her bravado is performative and she’s got a lot of stuff she just doesn’t want to deal with.
13. Overcompensation.  Is there something that your character just HAS to do better than anyone else?  Or are they just that dang good without trying?  If they see someone else showing off, what is their knee-jerk reaction?
She is an awful showoff and definitely feels like she has to prove herself to others for approval but she’d never admitted that.
14. Fight Club.  Is your character a good fighter?  What kind of skills do they have?
She is! Her fighting style is a mix between huntress and harly quinn! She’s not super strong but she’s fast and scrappy. She’s skilled with rapiers and crossbows.
15. The Arts.  Is your character a creative type?  What kinds of things can they create?  Can they act?  Street perform?
BBE (big bard energy). She’s always performing.
16. Goofy.  Is your character a clown?  Do they like to make people laugh?
She can be funny! She’s got a sharp but cheap wit.
17. Language.  Is your character multilingual?  How many languages do they speak?  Do they have an accent?  Is it sexy?  Is it silly?  Do they have a multilingual lisp?
She has a Scottish accent. She speaks common, Òran*,  elvish, & orcish
Common is a given, she is, however, bearly literate in common. Her mother’s culture doesn’t have a written language and it’s not their mother tongue so they really only learn enough written common for trade and dealings with other people.
Òran*: it’s just Gaelic but for the human culture I made up for her mother’s side of the family in d&d. I will link the whole post about that here. It’s an oral-only language and Fable’s first language.
Elvish: She’s a half-elf and spent a lot of time with the elves when she was younger. As much as she hates being connected to the elves, it’s her strongest written language. She’s the knows wood-elf dialect best..
Orcish:  Her long time on again off again ex-partner was a half-orc.
18. Embarrassment.  What is something really embarrassing that your character has done/said?
Indecent exposure.
19. Memory.  Has your character gotten any of their memory back?  If so, what?  Did it change them?
She has. It’s hard because she got a lot of good memories back but also a lot of trauma. I think she had started to lean into some of her bad habits at first but tries to work through them. She definitely went home to her mom with Julian. Their relationship is very important to her and she would want to see her as soon as she could!
20. Family.  Talk about your character’s family.  Who were they
I’m just going to link this here lmao.

Instructions: Always repost with the rules, answer the 11 random questions left for you, and leave 11 more for the people you tag!
Tagged by: @illicreatxm
This got long so I’m going to stick it under a read more ^^
1. If you could write any canon character, which would it be and why?
Hm. I’m not sure. I have roleplayed a couple of canons before, but I find it harder to keep the muse for them. I could probably do Elsa okay, I could jump between her locked in the castle personality and her open, welcoming character post-film, which might help, but the inconsistencies in her Over-powered Powers annoy me, so I think I’d add a few limitations in there.
2. Favourite Disney movie?
Maybe Aladdin because Robin Williams is of course amazing and so perfect in that role~ Ohh but there’s also Atlantis.. And Dumbo! Aw no... Let’s just call this my top three before I get carried away >w>
3. Least favourite MCU character?
I haven't seen the more recent ones, so, I can't take into account characters like Thanos or Dr. Strange or, whoever else they've been bringing in. So out of what I've seen, I'd have to go with Bruce Banner/The Hulk.
It seemed in the earlier films that they didn't give much attention to Banner. They were all over using the Hulk to make bits interesting, but Bruce was boiled down to "quiet smart guy who CaN TuRN inTo THE HULK" so, yeah.
And the hulk himself later did like a 180° change for me. In his stand-alone film I think Hulk says like 3 words, maximum. Then rarely talks in his appearances in the other avengers brand films. Cool. We had "Puny God" and that was a-okay. One short, memorable, funny quote seems perfect.
But then what was all that when Whedon got his hands on it? (I mean don't get me started on that, I am really reigning myself back here but) They start off needing ways to calm Hulk down enough to get him back inside and give control back to Bruce, fair enough. But then like... He winds up not letting go of Bruce's body even though he isn't enraged anyway? And suddenly he's emotional enough and smart enough to take- what was it a plane? And seperate himself off from everyone and look all solemnly at Natasha before he does it or something?
Obviously my memory of it isn't great, honestly I stopped paying attention after Natasha's "I'm a monster- not because I was raised in a heartless environment full of violence and raised to literally kill people, that bit's whatever- but because they took away my fertility and now I can't have babies." speech. And that's the last MCU film I watched. I didn't want anything to do with them after seeing what Joss Whedon did with the characters and the overarching plotline and... Everything. x') So I might have gotten some of the hulk stuff wrong.
(I did watch Deadpool though, that I enjoyed~)
4. If you had to create any new character, what occupation would they have?
Ooo good question.
I think something proactive, where they could seek other characters out, but.. I'd kinda like a bad guy~ Someone who lies so much for their job, they have a dual personality to work with. They can be your smiling friendly neighbour, wishing you well on your holiday, then turn around and grit his teeth because this poses a major problem for his mission, and he can't lose his target, so now he has to follow, but he can't do that as your happy neighbour, no, you know he isn't going on holiday, certainly not today, not on your flight, not to the same ski lodge you're going to. No, he has to make a new cover- maybe say his neice phoned him with a family emergency and he'll be leaving to go be with her a while. Then shed this identity, find out where his target is going, quickly pose as some other tourist who blends into the background and get to the lodge first, all the while planning out some plausible skiing accident he can set up.
Wow that got more detailed than I expected x'D I think I just reinvented hitman, whoops.
5. Favourite sport?
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service, laughing hysterically.]
My biggest concern when I'm on my feet is not falling over so, obviously sports aren't really my deal. x')
I used to swim a lot when I was a kid, I loved that, but, don't do it now.
And I'm not really into watching sports either tbh. Most of it seems over-hyped. Most football teams (real football, it is not soccer. The hint is in actual football, the ball, is hit, with your feet. Picking it up and running with it and then sometimes kicking it does not qualify as football, come on USA. Your thing is closer to Rugby than Football.)
Anyway most teams aren't much better or worse than any other if you actually watch objectively, which makes it look like they both suck because they're too well matched to score goals more than once in a blue moon.
Rugby I don't really understand the appeal of either. Scrums are weird and it wouldn't be entirely bizarre to see a guy walking away from the game with blood down his face and an ear in his hand. You'd almost expect him to stick the ear on ice and be back in a few minutes with his bandages on.
Really the only sports than interest me are the gymnastic types. Ice skating is good for a while but it can start getting dull if you don't have people willing to break the mould a bit. (Which is why I absolutely love the free skate bit. Where they aren't being scored and they just do whatever the hell they want, omg I live for that)
Floor routines are awesome, the pommel horse and rings are usually a little samey for me but the one with those two bars at different heights, that's fun to watch~ there's a little more variety there.
(And I don't wanna hear anyone in the replies saying these aren't sports, every example there including figure skating is a separate event in the Olympics, so. There.)
6. What’s your dream car?
I don’t really have one. At this point in my life I don’t actually have the option to learn to drive so I haven’t really thought about it. My only criteria is, it has to have a nice face. x)
Since I was tiny I have always seen cars as faces. The headlights would be eyes, and usually the number plate would be the mouth, but some cars have other stuff like a grill that might be the mouth instead. So like...
Tumblr media
This would be a grumpy car with a pig-like nose and frown.. Actually those look like jowels either side of the mouth part. It looks kind of like a bulldog. X’)
Tumblr media
And this would be a happy car. That black part around the number plate it wide and smile-shaped, and the headlights- rounded on top and straighter on the bottom, like the little creases we get when we scrunch up our eyes laughing~
Tumblr media
This car looks like someone just said something really stupid to it, and it is not impressed, and lets the silence hang not knowing what to say.
Tumblr media
Happy car
Tumblr media
Terminator car
Tumblr media
Happy car but in a mean way.. Like it’s on its way to cause mayhem or poking fun at someone. You get the general idea -w-
7. A movie that you think should have a sequel?
Hmm... this is a toughie.
8. A movie sequel that you think should be deleted from existence?
I don’t remember which number it was or even the title, but the Shrek sequel where Shrek like, hates having kids so much he makes a deal to change time? And Fiona winds up as like a vicious warrior leader because no-one ever saved her from the tower, and rumplestiltskin is in it? What even was that...
9. Design your dream outfit using this game ?
I wouldn’t say this really is my dream outfit, but from the options on offer~
Tumblr media
(also discounting the enormous hair bun >w>;)
10. Favourite fairytale?
I’m not sure if this actually counts as a fairytale, but I love the story of the jolly roger. That classic skull and crossbones flag has a story behind it that a lot of people don’t know.
In a nutshell, a man (i guess a pirate) develops an intense crush on a young woman, who is about to get married. But just before her wedding, she dies. She is buried, but the man doesn’t take death for an answer. He digs her up and has sex with her body. When he’s done, a disembodied voice speaks to him, telling him that he has basically impregnated this corpse, and to come back in nine months.
For some reason, he does. He digs up the woman again. And sat below her pelvis is a small skull and two bones. The disembodied voice tells him to take these bones with him on his ventures, and they will bring him luck.
It’s bizarre, and kinda gross, and.. I dunno if being rewarded for sexually desicrating a corpse is the best moral? x’) But I was amazed when I heard this story, because I’d had no idea there was this whole tale behind the flag~ and I still love that it exists~
11. Create an avatar of your favourite muse using this creator? ?
First, it’s so cruel to ask me to pick my favourite child how dare you >w> haha
I went with Chester though because he’s the one I’m usually most connected to.
Tumblr media
I can’t think of anyone I want to tag right now (at least not anyone who hasn’t probably done this already), but I’ll put the new 11 questions for anyone who does feel like doing this~ :) __
1. What’s one thread/plot you really want to do that you haven’t had chance to yet?
2. What is the reason for, or meaning behind, your blog icon?
3. Do you have any pets? Tell us a bit about them!
4. What is one thing you would never want to change about your appearance?
5. There is an ultra secret spy group, and you’ve just uncovered their existence. Now they say that you must either work for them, or they’ll find a permanent way to keep you quiet. What kind of work would you offer to do for them?
6. If you met your muse in real life, how do you think the two of you would get along? (multi-muse blogs, pick one of your muses at random.)
7. You have been given a huge budget to remake one film in your own vision. You can change anything, add anything, choose the cast, you have no limits. What would you do?
8. What is one skill you wish you could automatically master?
9. A genie offers you a deal. An unlimited lifelong supply of one food of your choice... But, you have to sacrifice your ability to chew. Does any food still tempt you?
10. What do you think is the funniest animal?
11. Share one memory you have that makes you happy to think about~

Hope is the Thing With Feathers: 3/4
Tumblr media
@hollyethecurious and I started this fic as a gift to @kmomof4 for her birthday. Fittingly, it keeps getting longer because I swear Krystal is a muse disguised as a human being. Story banner created by Hollye as well.
Summary: Emma and her son Henry move to the tiny, quirky town of Hopeful, Maine for a fresh start. Emma isn’t expecting her son to get obsessed with a haunted castle or for her to get involved with the mysterious, handsome man who lives in the cabin behind it. Emma soon discovers that both the castle and the man have secrets that she could never have imagined. For @kmomof4 on her birthday.
Rating: M (yes, I upped the rating. This isn’t smut, but I definitely flirted with the line. All for you, Krystal!)
Words: 2,000 and some change in this chapter
Can also be read on Ao3
Trigger warnings: positive portrayal of past Millian
 Tagging: @artistic-writer @snowbellewells @whimsicallyenchantedrose @jennjenn615 @bethacaciakay @thislassishooked @teamhook @kday426 @snidgetsafan @delirious-latenight-laughs @winterbaby89 @let-it-raines @branlovestowrite @shireness-says (for some reason, I have no tag list for this, so I’m flying blind here! Hope I didn’t forget anyone!)
Chapter Three: And On the Strangest Sea
“Get off your ass. You’re taking me on a date.”
Emma Swan bursting through his front door with a demand upon her lips wasn’t how Killian foresaw his evening going. He set the beer he’d been nursing down on the coffee table next to his bowl of evening stew, Emma seemed to take that as Killian not taking her seriously judging by the scowl on her face and the way she fisted her hands on her hips.
“Did you not hear me, Jones?”
Killian lifted both hands in surrender. “I heard you, love, I’m just a bit taken aback by the delivery.”
She shuffled nervously, but the spark of anger remained in her eyes. “Well, I’m here to ask you out, okay. Like to dinner or something.”
Killian arched a brow. “Now?”
“Yes now!” she practically shouted. “So why are you still sitting there?”
He rose from the couch and approached her cautiously. He gave her a flirtatious grin as he fiddled with the ends of her hair. “A man likes to be wooed, love. Why the demand?”
Her brow wrinkled as she searched his face frantically. “Come on, Killian, let’s get out of here and go somewhere.”
“What’s happened, Swan? You were fine when you left here the other day.”
She worried her bottom lip. “Maybe I want to be sure it wasn’t just sex for you. Is it so wrong to ask that you take me out?”
He rubbed her arms up and down. “Of course, but give me time to plan the evening. You can come here tomorrow night, and I’ll serve you the best meal you’ve ever eaten.”
Emma shook her head vehemently, stepping quickly away from his embrace. “No, I want you to take me somewhere.”
He swallowed down the sudden fear that welled up inside and forced himself to smile charmingly. “Perhaps a picnic then, I know the perfect spot -”
“A restaurant,” Emma interrupted firmly, “maybe even a movie.”
He felt the color drain from his face. “I prefer a more intimate setting.”
She stubbornly crossed her arms over her chest. “We’ve done intimate. I want to go out.”
He let out an exasperated sigh and rubbed wearily at his forehead. “Emma, I just don’t like being around people.”
“Bull shit. You are many things, Killian Jones, but a recluse is not one of them. It doesn’t suit your personality.”
“Oh, really,” Killian snapped, stepping into her personal space, “you think you know me so well?”
“Actually, I don’t think I know you at all!”
She shouted the words so loudly, it startled them both into silence. He felt a knife twist in his gut as Emma’s face fell into a mask of hurt.
“Are you a ghost?” she whispered.
His eyes widened. “What I am . . . who I am . . . you wouldn’t believe me.”
“Try me.”
Killian collapsed onto the couch and rested his arms on his knees. He gestured to his dinner. “Ghosts don’t eat, Swan. Do they?”
She eyed him and then his stew as if she might run out the door any second. “No. I guess not.”
“I’m very much alive.” He winked at her in an attempt to lighten the mood. “Or did you not feel that the other day?”
She huffed out a wry laugh. “So why can’t you leave?”
“You’re quite perceptive, Swan. The best way to explain it is . . . I’m cursed.”
Emma blinked, but didn’t move. “That’s what Belle said, but I had a hard time believing it. You’re the pirate. The one who was Milah Gold’s lover.”
“Aye.”
Emma sank onto the couch, shaking her head in disbelief. “But . . . how? Why?”
Killian stood and paced to the window. “Gold cast the spell first, on Milah, after he learned of our dalliance. He knew it was the only way he could keep her. Milah and I truly loved one another, but she also craved freedom. She longed to travel and see the world.”
“No wonder she fell for a pirate.”
Killian turned to see Emma smiling at him. He nodded. “Gold assumed I would sail away and forget her. He didn’t know how deep our feelings ran.”
“But you couldn’t just give up the sea . . . or did you?”
Killian chuckled, rubbing at his jaw. “You sound like Milah. She wouldn’t hear of me giving up my ship.” He stepped closer to Emma and extended his hand. “Come, I’d like to show you something.”
Emma tilted her head skeptically, yet she took his hand anyway. He searched her eyes.
“You have nothing to fear from me, Emma,” he told her sincerely, squeezing her hand.
She nodded. “I trust you.”
*****************************************************
Emma stood in awe, her hair blowing on the wind gusting up from the sea. The sound of waves breaking on the rocky Maine coast was as soothing as the warm sun beating down upon her face. It was like something out of a movie, this jagged cliff with a pristine view of the sea.
“This is one of the farthest boundaries of my curse,” Killian said softly at her side, “and Milah’s before me. She would watch for my ship from this very spot as often as she could, and I likewise would look up to this cliff as we approached Hopeful Harbor.”
His eyes were wistful as they gazed out at the gorgeous view.
“It’s so beautiful here,” Emma breathed out.
“Aye, the sea can be so calming,” he agreed. Then he gave her a wink. “Yet it can also turn volatile on a whim. Like a woman.”
Emma elbowed him, and he gave an exaggerated grunt. “So I take it you found reasons to come back to Hopeful often?”
“Naturally,” Killian agreed, settling down on the quilt he had laid out on the grass. “I wasn’t about to abandon the woman I loved. This was our meeting place.”
“Kind of exposed isn’t it?” Emma asked as she settled down beside him.
He arched a brow. “Makes it sort of thrilling, actually.” He inclined his head towards the tree line. “There was a spot over there in the forest as well, more secluded. We not only made up for lost time with moments of intimacy, we also racked our brains trying to figure out how to break her bloody curse.”
“Belle said you dabbled in magic you didn’t understand.”
He chuckled. “That was an understatement. And those books of her husbands she smuggled out of the manor? They were the very ones the Hopeful parson caught her with that fateful day when everything changed.”
Emma put her hand on his arm gently. “I’m so sorry.”
Killian took her hand, rubbing his fingers over her knuckles. “I don’t know exactly what went wrong. All I know is the curse was transferred to me. And ironically, by freeing Milah, I gave the mob the power to kill her.”
“That wasn’t your fault.”
Emma took his arm and looped it over her shoulder. He pulled her close against him, pressing his lips to the top of her head. She leaned into him, closing her eyes as she relished the scent of him that enveloped her.
“So you can’t die?” she whispered.
“No,” he sighed, her hair fluttering under his breath, “there was a dark time when I tried to end my miserable existence. To no avail.”
“What about Gold? That had to be some strange karma, his wife’s lover stuck on his property.”
Killian chuckled. “Aye, that was the one silver lining in it, actually. I got my revenge rather spectacularly.”
Emma pulled away, her eyes wide. Not that she was scandalized. In her opinion, Gold got what was coming to him. “What did you do?”
That cocky grin of his filled his face. “I may not be a ghost, Swan, but I do a rather good impression of one. I can haunt people with the best of them. Robert Gold did indeed fall to his death from his third floor balcony, but it wasn’t because he was consumed with grief.”
Emma grinned back. “You didn’t!”
Killian raised both hands in defense. “Hey, I didn’t say I pushed the man. Physically, anyway. But mentally? I don’t think he could take my . . . haunting him anymore.”
Emma laughed, shaking her head at his smug expression. Killian lay back on the quilt, crossing one arm under his head and reaching the other out to her. She gladly came to him, settling in the crook of his arm and resting her cheek on his chest.
“How did you . . . live?”
“In the beginning my first mate was my connection to the outside world. He became Captain of my ship, but continued to share a portion of all the spoil. He also brought me provisions. I didn’t spend all my coin, squirreling away as much as I could.”
He fell silent as he ran his fingers through her hair. Emma twisted so she could look up at him. His expression had gone wistful again.
“Then, after Smee,” he continued, “there were others like Belle, like your boy, who had a heart of belief. Each one was a tenuous link to the rest of the world out there.” His jaw clenched and his arm tightened at her waist.
“But eventually they all . . . “ she couldn’t finish the thought.
“Aye,” was all he said. Finally, he looked at her again and flashed her a light-hearted smile. “Then technology advanced by leaps and bounds. Radio, TV, cell phones, the internet. Especially the internet. As time marched on, I withdrew more and more to avoid suspicion.” He pressed a kiss to her temple. “Until now.”
Emma rolled over, perching her chin on his chest. “It sounds lonely.”
“It was,” he said softly, tracing her jawline with his fingertips, “and I certainly never thought I could love again after losing my Milah,” he swallowed nervously before continuing, “that is until I met you.”
His words made the breath leave Emma’s lungs. Since she didn’t know what to say, she slid forward and pressed her lips to his.
*******************************************************
Killian had been right, there was something thrilling about making love out in the open in broad daylight. Though the sun was now dipping closer to the horizon, and the breeze was a cold gust. Killian had the quilt cocooned around their naked bodies. As she watched the sky turn yellow and red and felt Killian’s hand drawing circles on her back, she couldn’t think of being more content.
“We need to head back,” Killian told her softly, though he made no move to release her.
Emma didn’t move either, running her fingers instead lightly through his chest hair, their breaths rising and falling together. “This project with the manor . . . why is Belle so insistent on it? Won’t it make it harder for you to stay under the radar?”
Killian’s hand stilled on her back, and he cleared his throat nervously. “Belle has this crazy idea that she’s found a way to break my curse.”
“And how is that?”
“Um . . . you, actually.”
Emma sat abruptly, clutching the quilt to her chest. “What?”
Killian sat up too, and Emma tried not to be distracted by the fact that his muscular body was no longer covered.
“You see, the key ingredient in the spell I cast was the crushed wing of a cardinal. A symbol of freedom, or so I thought. And apparently, the other side of that coin is . . . a pure white Swan.”
Emma’s eyes narrowed. “So this is all about my name?”
Killian shrugged. “Belle thinks maybe it doesn’t have to be a literal Swan. Especially since she sensed a connection between us . . . “
Emma stood abruptly, reaching for her clothes discarded on the grass.
“Emma,” Killian said softly.
“So you what?” she snapped, her hands trembling as she slipped into her underwear. “You seduced me because of my last name? Thinking it might do the trick?”
He leapt up, heedless of his nudity, and reached out for her arm. “No, Emma, of course not. My feelings for you are real. I haven’t felt alive in a hundred years, and then your boy shows up -”
“Don’t bring Henry into this! Or are you interested in him too? Because he’s also a Swan?”
Emma shoved her feet into her boots, trembling all over. She blinked rapidly as she faced him, refusing to let him see her cry. “I trusted you!”
“And you were right to!”
She backed away, both hands up in warning. “I’m leaving, okay. Don’t follow me.”
As she turned away, he whispered, “As you wish.”

Chapter 8: Don’t bother writing (I’m gone)
Present Day: Enchanted Forest
“What did Emma tell you again?” Killian asked, taking leaping steps just to keep pace with his daughter’s rapid steps.
“That the Dagger was with an old friend. There is only one person Mama would give it  to,” Alice replied, trying to hurry as much as she could.
“Someone she trusted the most?” Killian guessed. But as far as he knew, Emma hardly trusted anybody, let alone enough to entrust his dagger to them.
“Nu-uh, that would be the first person anyone would torture. She gave it to Ariel, Queen of the Water Realms. She can travel between the realms anytime she wanted, and could make a quick getaway.”
Killian knew Ariel; they had been something like friends at some point, despite the animosity between pirates and mermaids. “Ah. She’s a nice lass. How are you going to contact her though?” he asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.
Alice huffed, stopping in her tracks, pulling a seashell necklace from around her neck. “Using this. I have already sent her message via shell. She should be waiting for us, we must hurry. Now, stop asking questions and follow me!”
Killian frowned, a reprimand ready on his tongue. But he realised with a pang that she was not a little girl anymore; she had been right to take that tone. Emma and Alice had a plan in place and he needed to respect that she knew what she was doing. They had only a small lead, with Gothel being occupied with Emma. She would come after them soon if she realised that they had the Dagger. So far, the only person Gothel thought knew about the Dagger was in her custody. And they had to maintain the ruse for as long as they could.
It took them a few hours, but Alice and Killian finally managed to break through the treeline and onto the short beach. Alice looked around frantically, vibrating on the spot like she was ready to explode. Killian might not know much about this version of his daughter, but her anxiety was not anything new.
“Starfish, Ariel will be here. It will be fine,” he said in a soothing, slow tone, grabbing Alice softly by the shoulders and making her look at him. “Deep breaths, sweetheart. That’s it, just concentrate on your breathing.” He did the breathing exercise along with her, until he felt she had calmed down enough.
Alice sighed, rubbing at her forehead. “Why would Mama do that?!” she exclaimed. “I never should have let her.”
Killian chuckled, despite the situation they were in. “Love, I’ve come to realise that once your mother has set her mind on something, it is neigh on impossible to change her mind. Besides, in her place, I would have done the same thing.” He let out a long breath, his hand and hook resting on his hips. “That does not mean I condone what she did.”
“That’s exactly what you did. Actually, what you did was a million times worse.” Alice’s tone might have been matter-of-fact, but her words hit him in the gut. He had had the chance to apologise to Emma, but he hardly even said goodbye to his little girl before he left her.
“Starfish, I’m so sorry. I-” But Alice held up her hand to half him mid-sentence.
“It’s alright, Papa. I mean, it’s not alright, but it is for now. We will have time for apologies and regret after we get rid of the Darkness and save Mama.”
“That is exactly what your mother said.” He was in awe of the young woman in front of him, and he owed it all to Emma. She was the one who had raised Alice into a smart, brilliant young woman. He couldn’t have done a better job; there would always be a part of him that loathed himself for missing out on the chance to be a good father. And unwittingly, he had lost that chance again because of what had happened with Charles.
He was saved from the dark direction his thoughts were taking by Ariel’s timely arrival. His joy was short lived, though, because the moment he stepped closer to Ariel, the voices in his head grew louder, the Darkness calling out to him, telling him to take his Dagger and run away. To protect himself. He squeezed his eyes shut, staying rooted in place and watched as Alice greeted the mermaid and exchanged pleasantries that he was too far away to hear, and too consumed by the sudden urge to hunt Gothel down.
He lost track of how long he had stood in one place, squeezing his eyes shut and trying to block his ears against the assault of the Darkness. He realised that he had been in control for so long because the Dagger was in another realm. It was a hundred times harder now to quell the voices in his head. He was forced out of his catatonic state by Alice dumping a bucket of cold water over his head. He started at her, dripping with salt water as she stood above him, panting slightly and the now empty bucket still held aloft.
“Th-ank you,” he sputtered out, pushing his hair from his face, and standing up properly. “I apologise, Starfish. I don’t know what got over me.”
Alice nodded, dropping the bucket next to him and taking a seat. She patted the spot next to her, but he could still hear the dull echoes of the Dagger and chose to stand instead. “Was it the Darkness?” she asked softly.
He hesitated to answer her for a very long time, but finally relented, letting out a giant sigh. “Aye.”
“It’s the Dagger.” It was more of statement than a question, and Killian was unsure what he could reply to that. Alice nodded to herself, staring at the horizon for a long time, both of them in somewhat comfortable silence.
“D’you know I hate magic?” she asked, but he had a feeling it was rhetorical, and allowed her to talk. “I do. Magic is what trapped me in that tower, magic is what took you away from me. Magic is what caused Emma and I so much pain in our lives. I could never understand why Mama loved it so much, even after all that had happened. She even wanted me to learn, harness my own magic. But she always understood. She even stopped using magic for me. She’s- She my mother in every single way. Not just in the way that counts. I actively reject Gothel as my mother.” The last part was said with such vehemence, so completely different from the tone she had adopted for the rest that it startled Killian.
He finally took a seat next to Alice, while still maintaining enough distance from the Dagger. “Darling, I realise that I have not been the best father. I know that Emma has made sure that you do not have to suffer the same fate as we both did as children. You are right, she truly is your mother in every single way, and I have just treated her so terribly. I have treated you terribly. How do we get past that? I don't have the answer to that question, I don't have the answer to so many things. I just feel so lost, I feel so miserable and ashamed. So tell me, what do I do?”
Alice sighed heavily, resting her chin on her bent knees, and just stared at the horizon. Killian waited with bated breath for a moment, before deciding that he would not be getting a reply from her. But just as he was about to get up, Alice finally responded. “You don't do anything, Papa. You just need to give her time, give me time, and be there for us. We will get past it because we are family, and family means we never stop trying.” She got up, giving him a hand and pulling him up, dusting the sand from her dress. Killian nodded at her, feeling a sense of calm wash over him. This might not have been forgiveness, but Alice’s words gave him hope. She hesitated, as if she was contemplating saying something. “I love you, Papa. Even when I feel like I should hate you. I love you, because you’re my Papa, and because you’re here now.”
Killian swallowed thickly at the lump in his throat, wordlessly accepting the olive branch she had offered. “Let’s go, love. We have quite the journey to Camelot.”
She reached into Emma’s satchel, retrieving a leather cuff from it and handing it to him.
“I don’t think that’s my style, Starfish,” he chuckled. Regardless, he took the cuff from her, examining it. As far as leather cuffs went, it was fairly routine, nothing that stood out to him about the craftsmanship or the quality.
“It suppresses magic,” Alice explained. “In case you lose control,” she added.
Killian’s jaw clenched, the Darkness in him hissing at her insinuation. It scared him, how quickly his darker impulses came to the fore. The fear of doing something to harm his daughter was enough for him to place the cuff on immediately.
If Alice noticed the haste in which he put it on, she did not comment on it.

20 years ago: Enchanted Forest
Killian could feel every cell of his body corrupted by the black sludge of the Darkness, burning him from the inside out. All the pain and heartbreak that he had gone through amplified until his heart was nearly bursting from the agony, so much so that all he wanted to do was rip his heart from his chest and cut off his feelings all together. He felt unbelievably violated, the Darkness had taken over his body. He could feel the muck and grime settle in every crevice of his soul.
And when he emerged from his transformation, the Darkness had taken over so entirely - he felt born again, no longer restricted by the whims and restrictions of human existence. He felt the immensity of power at his disposal. He was Captain Hook once again. His lips spread into a wild grin - he had a blonde beauty to thank for liberating him.
Little did he know that Killian Jones was trapped, but alive, under the layers of rotten, filthy darkness.

Emma teleported herself back to the tower, making both Smee and Alice jump in fright. She couldn’t blame them; she did practically stumble in like a deranged maniac, frantically yelling at Smee to “Leave, now!” Alice backed away from Emma, her eyes wide and blue, fear crystal clear in them. Emma sucked in a deep breath, if only to not frighten Alice any more than she already had.
She quickly relayed what had happened to Smee, promising to tell him the whole story after she had made sure Killian was fine. She hurriedly packed a sack for Alice, carelessly throwing together outfits for her. But she had not been fast enough. When she rounded the corner from Alice’s space into the main room, a silent and docile Alice in tow, Killian was waiting for them, leaning casually against the window ledge. He looked up at that exact moment, a predatory grin on his face as he stalked towards them
Emma stopped dead in her tracks, pushing Alice behind her, the only defense between the child and the Dark One. Because the thing in front of her now was not the man she loved. This was not Killian, and frankly, she was afraid to find out who he was.
Killian stopped just in front of her, his head tilted to the side in a disapproving manner, lips in a slight pout.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk.” He crouched in front of Emma, his gaze shifting to Alice who was hiding behind her, her grip tightening on Emma’s trouser’s leg. “It’s me, Starfish,” he crooned, his predatory look shifting into something far more soft.
“Papa?” Alice sounded scared, tentative. Emma saw Killian’s jaw clench and he glared up at Emma, as if she was the one at fault for Alice fearing him. Emma met his gaze fearlessly.
He was the first one to look away, all of his attention focused on Alice. “Aye, my love. Are you ready to get out of here?”
“Really?” the child asked, a slight edge to her tone, almost like she was afraid to be hopeful.
“Aye, Starfish. Papa found a way. Told you I would, didn’t I?” he grinned, reaching past Emma and taking a willing Alice into his arms, balancing her on his hip. He turned to Emma, his electric blue eyes fixed on hers.
“Are you afraid of me?” he asked in an unexpectedly soft tone.
Emma was afraid for him. She was scared about what the Darkness was doing to him, his mood all over the place, unreadable to her. But she did not fear him.  But she knew, she could bring her Killian back. She stepped forward, tentatively brushing her knuckles over his cheek, her magic sparking, triggered by the Darkness in him. He then closed his eyes at her soft touch, his entire countenance losing the air of a man with great power. When his eyes opened, they were back to the cerulean of Killian Jones. She smiled.
“I could never be afraid of you. I’m afraid for you, my love,” she confessed, her eyes shifting to Alice, who had her head resting against her father’s shoulder, her thumb in her mouth. She only did that when she was most distressed.

Killian nodded in acceptance. He grabbed her hand, pressing a kiss to her knuckles, and pulled her closer, enveloping his girls in his arms. Once he was certain that they would be shielded properly, he expelled a blast of magic, strong enough to break any spell. He wanted to get the Dark One to free his daughter, and one way or another, that was what he did. The tower started disintegrating around them, and once he felt the spell keeping Alice trapped break, he magically transported all of them to a safer location.
His feet hit the ground hard, jostling the little girl in his arms, while Emma managed to land quite gracefully on her feet. Both the adults turned their gaze on Alice, who looked around her in awe. She was truly outside the tower for the very first time. She squirmed in Killian’s hold, forcing him to let her go. And he hesitated for just a moment, concerned about her exploring too far. But Alice remained by their side, walking around and touching each tree, plant, and rock, gasping each time.
He had been enraged at Emma in the beginning; if it weren’t for her insistence that he grab the Dagger, he would have escaped this curse. But it was only because of the Darkness that he had been able to save his daughter. That couldn’t have been a bad thing, could it? He watched with amusement as his daughter explored the area around her, keeping up a constant chatter.
He chanced a glance at Emma, who was standing on the other side of the clearing they were in, but she was already looking at him with a strange expression. But she smiled at him when she noticed him looking. Odd, she looked almost contemplative.
Emma walked up to him, her hands behind her back. “I have something for you.” She looked serious, confusing him further.
“What is it, Swan?”
“Something that belongs to you,” She brought her hands forward, revealing the Dark One’s Dagger.
The Darkness flared up, screaming at him to possess it, to never let it out of his sight. With the Dagger in his hands, he could do anything he wanted. He reached for it, his hand trembling, but Emma stopped him just before he could touch it.
“Wait. Wait, we need to talk about this.”
“About what?” he growled, not able to take his eyes off of the Dagger.
“You seem different, Killian. You’re not you. Maybe I should just hold on to the Dagger for you,” she suggested. “I am just wo--”
Whatever the rest of her sentence was, Killian could not hear her over how loud the voice in his head was.
How dare she? The Darkness screamed inside his head. It’s yours to take. She is trying to control you. Is that what you want?
“Shut up! Just shut up.” He meant to snap at the voice in his head, but Emma jumped at his harsh tone, hurt flashing in her eyes.
“I-I’m sorry,” she whispered, dropping the Dagger and backing away. “I’m going to go, and um, find us some food.” Emma walked away from the clearing and toward the dirt road that led to the village. He watched as she glanced at Alice, hesitated, and then kept walking. His gut clenched: he scared her.
What if she was running away from him?
He took and Dagger and placed it in his jacket. He grabbed Alice, despite her protests against being dragged away from turtles, and followed after Emma. Alice continued to cry, beating on his back to let her down, but as much as it pained him, he needed to find Emma, and reassure her. It was just a misunderstanding; everything would be alright.

Present day: Enchanted Forest
Emma struggled against the magical shackles Gothel had her bound in, but it was in vain. Her binds were too tight. Her wrists painfully rubbed against them when she tried to wriggle her hand out.
“Why are you doing this? Why are you after me?” she spat out at Gothel.
Gothel ignored her, rummaging through the myriad of bottles on the table opposite, her back turned to Emma. A couple of moments passed and Emma started to sweat in the humid room. Gothel had restrained her in the woods and used magic to transport them both. The place resembled the mines, except instead of stone, the walls were made of soil. So it was damp, but still very hot.
Gothel let out a triumphant shout, finally having found what she had been looking for. She moved to face Emma, dangling a small vial at her. “Do you recognise this?”
“Should I?” Emma sassed, glaring at the witch.
“It’s something I made, just for you. It’s mostly sulphur.”
“Aw, you shouldn’t have.”
Gothel ignored Emma’s cheekiness. “Actually, I did use it on you once. Do you remember that?”
Emma glared at her, her heart raced simply remembering the pain Gothel’s poison had caused. But Gothel continued, observing Emma with curiosity. “It was meant to corrupt you; that was what the sulphur was meant for. It destroys light magic from within. You should have never been able to survive that.” She crouched in front of Emma, her head tilted to one side, her cold eyes staring at her unblinkingly, unnerving her. “I wondered, how you managed to stay so young over the years. I always assumed you used a glamour spell or a potion. It was only when I realised that my potion did not work that I started understanding what was really going on.”
Gothel smirked at her. Emma knew her panic was clear by her expression. “You have a part of the Darkness in you, Princess,” Gothel whispered gleefully. “My dark magic is no match for that, I know that now. I’m sure you’re suffering enough as it is. You wouldn’t survive losing your magic - you can’t live without it and you can’t live with it.”
Emma couldn’t understand how the witch had figured out her secret. She had been so certain that no one knew about it - not even Alice. It had taken a couple of years for Emma herself to even realise and understand. When Killian had linked the two of them together, some of the Darkness from him transferred to her. Emma assumed that the dark magic she had been sensing had been through the link belonged to Killian. But it was the dark magic in her own veins. Her magic was corrupted, both light and dark a part of each other. It had only become worse over the past 20 years.
Emma had not revealed this part of the plan to Killian for this reason - once they destroyed the Darkness, it would destroy her magic as well. It had been made pretty clear what would happen to her without her magic. She couldn’t bring herself to tell her daughter and her love that she would not survive this. That there was no happily ever after for her.

20 years ago: Enchanted Forest
Emma heard Alice’s cries before she heard Killian calling her name. She whirled around, startled to see the latter run up to her, holding a crying Alice in his arms.
“Swan,” he breathed, stopping a few feet away from her.
“What’s wrong with Alice?” she asked, stepping forward and taking the crying child into her arms, rubbing her hand over Alice’s back to comfort her. Alice wrapped her arms tightly around Emma’s neck, her cries muffled on Emma’s shoulder.
Killian looked helpless, like he was on the verge of crying himself. He sank to the ground, sitting slumped against a tree, running his hands through his hair, pulling at it painfully. It hurt Emma to see him in such a condition, but she was clueless to help him.
“I think I frightened her. I just- I needed to come after you. I needed to stop you, Swan,” he said after a long while, desperation dripping from his voice.
Alice’s cries had died down by then, and she had drifted off, slumped against Emma. She did not blame her; Alice had had a very eventful evening and it must have been too frightening and confusing for a six-year-old to handle, no matter how intuitive she was.
“Stop me from what, Killian?” Emma snapped, her voice coming out in harsh whisper. “You yelled at me to ‘Shut up.’ I thought you needed a moment to calm yourself.”
“I do not need to calm myself. I’m fine,” he bit out through clenched teeth.
“No, you are not. This is not who you are - flying tempers, making Alice cry? That is the Darkness. You are losing control. We need to get rid of it.”
He rose up, his eyes narrowed, and he looked at Emma contemplatively. “Oh, is that why you held on to my dagger? So you can ensure I don’t ‘lose control?’ You want to control me, is that it?”
“Of course not!” Emma protested. She switched Alice to her hip, leaving one hand free. She did not want to, but if it came down to it, she had to protect herself and Alice against the Darkness. Even if it meant she had to harm him. “Killian, this is not you.”
“No, Emma. This is better,” he argued, keeping his voice down. Emma was relieved that he did not wake Alice up: she did not want the little girl to see her father this way. “I was finally able to get my daughter out of that hell. The only way I was able to do that was with magic. My magic. Not yours.”
Emma reeled at that, feeling like she had been slapped. “I offered to use my magic. I would have done anything for Alice, you know that!”
But Killian ignored her, powering through his own speech. “You told me to grab the Dagger, Swan. You forced this on me, and now that I actually seem to like it, you just can’t handle it.” He wagged a finger at her, grinning like a maniac. “That’s it, isn’t it, love? You can’t handle the fact that I’m stronger than you. That I don’t need your magic.”
Emma bit her lip, her heart clenching at his accusations, trying to convince herself that it was the Darkness making him say these things. He wanted to hurt her, but she couldn’t give him that satisfaction.
“You and I both know that that’s not true. We are a family. It doesn’t matter who is more powerful.”
“Ah, see, that’s where you’re wrong, Swan. All this time, you had me convinced that I needed you, that I needed your magic to save my daughter, when in fact, I didn’t need you at all. Maybe you knew all along what needed to be done. You were just afraid that you would be left alone again, forever the orphan Princess.”
Tears came unbidden to Emma, every word coming out of Killian’s mouth hitting the mark. She pulled Alice closer, drawing comfort from her daughter.
“That is not fair. You’re not thinking straight,” she said quietly. Whether she was trying to convince Killian or herself, she wasn’t sure. Her hand trembled as she reached for his, the dark magic sizzling under his fingertips. “This is not you. This is not the man I love.”
“Perhaps the man you love is no more,” he whispered, his eyes looking away from her, unable to meet her gaze.
Emma was rendered speechless. She was not sure what she could possibly do to bring her Killian back to her.
“I refuse to believe that,” she said with conviction, drawing his attention back to her. “I love you, Killian Jones. Whether the Darkness likes it or not, I am not leaving.” She grew more confident when he seemed to listen, drawing closer to him, her hand drawing up his arm and resting against his chest. “I know your heart, I know you’re still there. Push the voices away. It’s just the three of us here - you, me, and Alice.”
Killian let out a deep breath, stepping away from her, Emma’s hand dropping. “I don’t know what’s happening, Swan,” he confessed, biting down hard at his lip. He squeezed his eyes shut, massaging his forehead.
Emma looked on, worried and helpless, wondering what she could possibly do to help her fiancé. “Talk to me, tell me what is going on inside your head. Lean on me.”
Killian nodded, pulling her closer. He hesitated, before holding his arms out to take his daughter, and letting out a relieved breath when Emma handed her over. He held Alice close, centering himself.
“I apologise for the things I said to you, Emma. I wasn’t thinking clearly.”
Emma nodded, wordlessly accepting his apology. But she had to know. ”Did you mean any of it? Do you really think- do you think that I kept things from you? That I tricked you into falling in love with me?” Her questions slipped out one after another, her insecurity rearing its ugly head.
Killian immediately pulled back, his hook resting on her waist. “No, absolutely not! I was- They were senseless words said in spite, my love. I was being an arse, and I’m sorry.” A beat later, he added, “I never meant for those words to come out, Emma. It- I was just so angry, I was hurt. And in that moment, I wanted to hurt you, like you hurt me.”
Emma swallowed thickly, not allowing him to notice the fear she felt building inside, painting a smile on her face instead. “It was the Darkness, Killian. It wasn’t you. I’ve seen this before, I’ve seen the way it corrupts and destroys. We need to get rid of it, once and for all.”

Present day: Camelot
It had taken Killian and Alice a week to reach Camelot by foot. He couldn’t use his magic, and Alice had never tried using hers. While it had given them plenty of time to talk and for Killian to get to know his daughter again, each day was agonising as they both feared for Emma’s life. Neither of them could understand why Gothel would want Emma, but the longer it took them to get rid of the Darkness, the worse their imaginations became. It had come to a point where neither of them spoke about what was happening to Emma; once again, she had sacrificed herself for Killian and Alice. Talking about it did nothing to relieve their guilt.
“Have you met this Merlin fellow before?” Killian asked, turning to Alice.
“Well, sort of. A very long time ago, we heard a rumour of an ancient sorcerer who could destroy the Darkness. But after a couple of months of research, we grew tired. It had been ten years at that point, I think, since you had been gone. It was a difficult year, for Mama. I was a hellion during my late adolescence,” Alice said, making Killian chuckle.
Another good thing about the time he had spent with Alice? He was slowly beginning to let go of his guilt and enjoy learning new tidbits of information about his daughter’s life.
“I’m sure if anyone could have handled it, Emma could have.”
“You’re not wrong. But that did deter her from looking for a way to get rid of the Darkness. Perhaps, if we had kept looking, we could have been reunited sooner.” Alice shot him a tight smile, before looking down, remorseful.
Killian couldn’t have his daughter blaming herself in any way. He stopped her, grasping her shoulders with hand and hook, waiting patiently for her to meet his eye. “Listen to me, Starfish. You have nothing to feel upset about. Things happened the way they were bound to happen. Emma made a decision to be a mother first. If I were in her place, I would have done the same thing.”
Alice shook her head, pushing Killian away, her arms crossed petulantly. “This is all my fault. This started because you wanted to rescue me from that tower. Maybe I was better off-”
“No!” Killian snapped, making Alice jump. He wouldn’t blame her; even when she had been a child, he had never raised his voice at her, let alone as an adult. “You need to stop blaming yourself. That is far too heavy a burden to carry on your shoulders, love. Gothel trapped you in that tower, and nothing you could have said or done would have stopped either me or Emma from saving you. You’re our daughter - and that is what you do for your family, Alice. So, don’t you dare think we would be better off. You saved me from a life of a pointless pursuit for revenge, you were there for Emma all those years I was gone. I probably never would have met Emma if it weren’t for you. I owe everything to you, my darling.” He smiled, drawing her into his arms, pressing a soft kiss to the side of her head. “Enough with such talk. Let us get to Merlin.”
Another fifteen minutes of walking led father and daughter to a dilapidated bridge, both of them looking around concerned and confused. The more they ventured into Camelot, the more they were starting to realise that there was no one there; everything in Camelot seemed to be broken down, vines and shrubbery overgrown on the buildings. Everything looked abandoned, not like the thriving city Killian had come to expect.
“Are you sure this is the right place, Starfish?” Killian asked, helping her over a large, fallen pillar.
“Aye,” she said, jumping to the ground with a grunt. “At least, I think so. This is Camelot.”
“And this is where Merlin is supposed to be?” Killian asked with a scoff. “It looks like he hasn’t been here for a while.”
“Looks can be deceptive, Captain Jones,” a man’s voice spoke from behind them.
Killian and Alice whirled around, both of them drawing their cutlasses out and pointed them at the man’s throat. He seemed oddly calm, smiling at them despite the threat. Killian regarded him curiously: he was dressed in brown and gold robes, his arms at his sides and looking at them pleasantly, as if his life wasn’t being threatened. Killian could only think of one person who could be that brave.
“Merlin,” he declared, his sword still held pointed at the wizard.
“Indeed. Now, if you could be so kind as to lower your weapons…”
Killian and Alice complied, sheathing their weapons. But Killian couldn’t shake the wariness he felt. “What did you mean, ‘looks can be deceptive?’” Killian’s eyebrow raised questioningly at the wizard.
If possible, Merlin’s grin grew wider and he waved his hand. Killian and Alice gasped at their surroundings melted away like candle wax, the decrepit area replaced by a thriving town square, people milling around them, vendors selling their wares.
Killian and Alice gaped as they saw all the people - Killian could not wrap his head around the display of magic. Just a moment ago, the place had been completely empty and neglected.
“Just a simple glamour to keep out unsavory characters,” Merlin assured, his hands clasped in front of him. “Queen Guinevere had it put up when she formed the kingdom with Ser Lancelot,” he informed them.
Killian was taken aback; all the stories that he had heard in the Land without Magic, King Arthur was the ruler of Camelot, and Lancelot was just a knight. “What about King Arthur?”
Merlin sighed, shaking his head. “Arthur...Well, he was nothing but a disappointment. Thankfully, our queen recognised it and made sure the people did not suffer from his obsession and neglect.” He clapped his hands together, making father and daughter stare at one another doubtfully. “However, you are here for a different reason, aren’t you?”
Killian shared a look with Alice before he stepped forward. “Perhaps there is somewhere else for us to speak, mate? Somewhere private, maybe?”

Present: Enchanted Forest
Emma let out an agonising scream, straining heavily in her bonds, as Gothel’s newest creation wreaked havoc on her. The witch had been torturing Emma for the past week, injecting her with different concoctions, exploiting the Darkness in her to make her weaker. For so long, she had been able to manage having the Darkness be a part of her, had resisted using her magic for this very reason. Every time she had used her magic, it had been painful. It had taken her a year or two to get used to the Darkness and to train herself to draw from the light magic only. It had been fairly easy, there was hardly any dark magic in her. But she had not accounted for the Darkness to draw power from the light magic, never accounted for its growth.
The more the Darkness grew in her, the weaker she had become. She hadn’t noticed it all until a year ago when she had found Merlin. He had noticed the growing Darkness in her, he had been the one to tell her of her fate; he had also told her that there was no way for them to separate the dark and light magic in her. They exist as one and would be destroyed as one. Perhaps, if you had come to me sooner, he had said. He had been the one to tell her Killian would be the only other person who would be able to remove just the Darkness. It had originally been a part of him, and would thus go back to him, leaving her light magic behind. Theoretically, that would be the outcome. She had almost tested that theory out, before Alice had come back.
Unfortunately for Emma, Gothel had learnt her secret as well. She had been injecting Emma with different potions to activate the Darkness in her. The weaker Emma grew, the less resistant she could be to Gothel’s magic. She intended to get Emma as weak as she possibly could, before Gothel forced Emma to reveal the plan to get rid of the Darkness.
For the past week, Emma had been confident that she would be able to make it. Until today, Emma could feel the Darkness take root. She could feel the pain in every cell of her body, as if she was burning from within. It was unbearable, and Emma couldn’t help but cry out. She had almost given up, almost begged Gothel to make it stop - but she refused to give the witch that satisfaction. She was stronger than that - she was the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Her parents had faced death with dignity; they might have been defeated, but they had their integrity. If Emma had to die, she would prefer to have her integrity intact. It was all she had left of her parents.
“My, my, aren’t you the stubborn one,” Gothel spat, wrapping her hand around Emma’s throat and squeezing. “But you are so weak now, Emma. You’re no match for my magic.”
“Do whatever the hell you want. You can never stop the Darkness from being destroyed.”
“That’s where you’re wrong, my dear. You’re going to tell me exactly what your plan is, and I’m going to make certain you lot rue the day you met me.”

20 years ago: Enchanted Forest
Killian and Emma had managed to set up camp at a riverbed. He caught them some fish, despite not feeling hungry, and Emma built a fire. Alice, now awake, watched everything they did with rapt attention, and she even helped Killian catch fish, jumping with joy when she first felt the water lapping at her feet, the smaller fish tickling her as they swam past. Killian silently enjoyed her carefreeness, her heart soaring at her happiness. This was all he wanted for her - but he had never anticipated the price would have been so steep. He knew what needed to be done, now. He had no control over this Darkness. He was weak, he had succumbed to it before in the past, and he had let it take over today. He could not imagine what would happen when he was not strong enough to pull back. He had seen the way it had wrecked Baelfire’s family, seen what the Darkness had turned Rumplestiltskin into.
He did not want that for his family. He pulled out the magic bean he had been carrying with him for centuries, having stolen it from Pan on his very last visit to Neverland. He had held on to it in hopes that he would use it once he had freed Alice. But he needed to get away from here, where the temptation was always there. Nothing would be able to stop him from sinking, not even his family.
He had heard of the Land without Magic from Baelfire; he would use the bean to go there. He would make sure he did not have his memories, that he would have nothing that would bring him back here. Not until Emma had found a cure to this plague. She would understand his reasons, she had to. Killian could not handle being here, he did not want to fight against the Darkness for a second longer than he had to. And if he went to the Land without Magic, he wouldn’t have to.
Once the fish was caught, cooked, and consumed, Alice promptly fell asleep again. That was good, he decided. He would not be able to tell Alice goodbye; he couldn’t watch her cry again. He had hurt her enough.
“Killian?” Emma called out, pulling him away from his thoughts. “Is everything alright? Is it- is the Darkness speaking to you again?” she asked, worry evident in her tone.
He smiled at her half-heartedly, grabbing her right hand in his own, fiddling with the green stone ring on her finger. He remembered the night she had told him the story about it, about how her mother had stolen the ring from her father, and how Prince David found Snow White, and how they fell in love. He wanted something like that for them. He wanted True Love. He wanted to believe that they would find each other again, no matter how long it took.
“No, darling. Just my own thoughts that are keeping me awake.”
“Do you want to talk about it? After all, aren’t married people supposed to share their burdens?” Emma teased, smiling coyly at him.
“Oh, Swan,” he said, wrapping an arm around her shoulder, pulling her to him. Emma snuggled into his body, pressing her nose to his neck, exhaling softly. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you, too, Jones.”
He closed his eyes, revelling in the moment, burning it to his memory. He needed just a moment, where everything was alright. He had finally managed to free his child, and he was engaged to the woman he loved. If it weren’t for the Darkness, this would be the best moment of his life; he wanted to pretend that it was. Just for a moment.
So he did, but he pulled away the next. “I need to talk to you, Emma.”
Emma pursed her lips, staring at him seriously. “Why do I get the feeling that I won’t like what you are about to say?”
“Oh, you will most surely hate it. But I-”
“Don’t say it,” she cut him off. “Don’t do it. Whatever you are thinking of - don’t.”
He sighed deeply, reaching for her hand, but she pulled away. She eyed him warily, her arms wrapped around herself protectively. “You don’t get to hold my hand and break my heart, Killian.”
“Dammit, Emma. I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m doing this for you,” Killian snapped, standing up and starting to pace. “I need to leave, get far away from here. I am not strong enough to control this. I will descend much deeper into the Darkness, and I cannot come out of it. I will hurt you and Alice. I don’t want that.”
“What about what we want?” Emma whispered, eerily calm. “What about what I want? I want you to stay, and fight this. You have us, lean on us.” She stood up too, her eyes glassy with tears, her teeth biting the inside of her cheek.
“I can’t, Emma. Please, don’t make me. I can’t fight. I will fail, and I don’t want that. I don’t want this Darkness. I never should have taken the Dagger.” Killian could hear the desperation in his own voice.
Emma let out a long, shuddering breath. “What do you want to do?” she asked, after a long silence.
And so he told her, every detail of his plan laid out in front of Emma. He could practically see how every word out of his mouth broke her heart a little bit more. But she let him talk and listened attentively. She didn’t say a word, not until he was done.
“You’ll be in this Land without Magic, and you will not have any of your memories, is that right?” she asked softly, her eyes trained on the ground.
He waited a beat, hoping she would look up at him. But when it became evident that she wouldn’t, he replied with a simple ‘Aye.’
She took in a deep breath, and exhaled slowly, nodding to herself. She finally looked him in the eye, her gaze sharp and determined, every bit the stubborn, strong woman he had fallen in love with. “I will get the answer to this dilemma, and I will come for you. I will find you.” Her words were confident and firm. Before he could thank her, however, she cut him off. “Do not think for one moment that this doesn’t break my heart.”
He swallowed thickly, knowing that there was only one thing left to you. “I need to leave now. Before Alice wakes up.”
Emma’s brows pulled together, and he could sense her anger. “You’re not even going to tell your daughter goodbye?” she demanded.
“I can’t do it, Emma. She will be devastated, she will make me stay. I can’t allow that to happen.”
She stared at him quietly, her rage radiating off of her in waves, her eyes wide and nostrils flaring. “You are a coward, Killian Jones,” she declared.
He hung his head in shame, moving toward his sleeping daughter, kneeling beside her. His throat was thick with tears, his heart hurt simply thinking about leaving her. He had never been so far from her - now, not only would he be in another realm, he would have no memory of her. It was for the best, though. It had be.
He squeezed his eyes shut, brushing Alice’s hair away from her forehead, pressing the lightest of kisses there, lingering for a moment before he pulled away. He took her in for a moment, knowing that he would miss watching her grow up. Just a few years, he told himself. You will see her in a few years.
“You don’t have to leave, Killian.” Emma’s soft voice floated through the air. “You could stay.”
Killian got up, taking one last look at his daughter before he turned to Emma. “Have you come up with a way to replace my memories in the Land without Magic?” he asked her, ignoring her statements.
She sighed, clearly still angry with him, but nodded. “I can modify your existing memories, I can store the real ones in a Dreamcatcher.”
“Let us do this, then.”

Present: Camelot
“This is yours?” Killian asked, tracing the hilt of Excalibur, Merlin’s name etched on the blade. It looked just like the Dark One’s dagger, only much longer and with an end missing. But Merlin explained that as well - how he had forged Excalibur, how the sword was broken by the first Dark One, how the Dark One had murdered his love, Nimue. How he tethered the Darkness to the Dagger.
The Darkness hissed at that, screaming at Killian to destroy the wizard and ravage Camelot, to let it free. He was thankful for the cuff preventing him from doing any magic, because he was certain he would have given in. He could hear the whispers from the Dagger, driving him insane.
“Yes,” Merlin answered. “Now you know everything you need to. We need to hurry, rid the world of this Darkness. Once and for all.”
“What about Gothel?” Alice asked. “What if she decides to stop us?”
“She will need to go through me, then,” Killian piped up, his jaw clenched tight. “Where do we need to go to find this Promethean flame?” he asked, addressing Merlin.
“It’s not too far, but I need to warn you. This is your battle, Killian. The Darkness will try everything to convince you not to do this. You will either win, or it will take over you, forever. There can be no cuff stopping you from using your magic,” Merlin warned. “This is ancient magic, more powerful than you could ever imagine. You did not have to face its true extent for decades, if what you say is true.”
“Aye, I understand.” Killian had made up his mind - after everything his daughter and Emma had sacrificed for him, he needed to step up. He had to face everything he had run away from, and he needed to start with the Darkness.
“Papa, perhaps we should talk about this?” Alice suggested, looking vexed at the task ahead of them. “Couldn’t I do this?” she asked Merlin.
“No, Starfish. It is my turn to take care of you now. I need to face my demons. And I will,” Killian vowed. He turned to Merlin. “Tell me everything I need to do, and I will do it.”

Present Day: Enchanted Forest
Emma panted heavily, her wrists sore from the constant friction against the shackles, feeling weak and useless as Gothel used her vile magic to delve into her mind. It was the worst torment, feeling a strange presence in her mind, moving through her thoughts and memories, invading her. It was a great violation, one that left her sick to her stomach. No matter how much she tried to resist, Gothel’s magic was stronger than Emma’s.
If there was any light magic left in her, it was hindered by the shackles she wore or was buried deep under layers of dark magic. Emma wanted to cry; her light magic had been the only constant in her life, and for it to be violated and corrupted, hurt in innumerable ways. She had never thought there could exist a person so cruel, a person who understood how precious natural magic was and could still inflict such horrors on another, like Gothel was.
She had tried so hard, for so long, to fight. But she had lost all ability to - and if she was being honest with herself, all will to. Emma was tired of being strong. She had finally been broken, and she did not have the fight left in her. She knew that was what Gothel wanted, and she had tried so hard not to give the witch that satisfaction - but she couldn’t hold on anymore.
Emma closed her eyes, tears running down the corners of her eyes, and she gave complete control of herself to Gothel. The Darkness had won.

20 years ago: Enchanted Forest
Emma gave the Dreamcatcher to Killian, not able to bring herself to take his memories. He understood, knowing that what he had already asked of her was a great enough price. She could not believe what Killian was about to do. She was certain that it was the Darkness in him that had made him so paranoid and so selfish. She would have fought him on his decision, if she had been talking to Killian alone. But the Darkness was unpredictable, and she could understand Killian’s fear. She might not support his decision, but she could at least understand where he came from.
She stood to the side, as she watched him perform the spell to transfer his memories on to the Dreamcatcher once he had crossover to the other realm. She still had him here with her, for a few moments at least. She fiddled with her mother’s ring for a moment before she took it off all together. Emma approached Killian, both of them smiling shakily at each other.
“My pirate,” she whispered fondly, looking up at him, her eyes roaming over every inch of his face, etching him into her memory. “It’s almost time, isn’t it?”
“Aye. Emma. I am sorry, love.” He brushed his knuckles down her cheek softly, looking at her with a kind of broken tenderness that made her gut clench.
She pressed her mother’s ring in his palm, shocking him. He stared at her, his lips moving wordlessly. “I just thought - Well, you gave me a ring. It felt right, to give you my mother’s. It’s a promise, I guess. And- We never got to the wedding, technically, and I expect that once you come back. But until then….” She trailed off, closing his fingers around the ring.
“Until then,” he vowed, softly, but with great conviction.
She nodded, swallowing hard at the lump in her throat. It was useless, though, as tears welled heavy in her eyes. She clutched the lapel of his greatcoat tightly, pulling him down to her. She pressed their lips together, kissing him with everything she had, wet and desperate, their breaths mingling every time they pulled back for air. She was loathe to end it, biting down on his lip. Killian was the one to pull away, his hand on her shoulder, both of them breathing heavily.
He pulled the Dagger from inside his jacket, handing it to Emma with a trembling hand. “Hold on to this for me, aye?”
Emma took the Dagger with both hands, her thumb tracing his name etched in the metal. “There’s still time to change your mind.”
“Swan.”
“I know...I - I don’t know how long it will be until I see you again. What if I never find a way to save you? You’re immortal, I am not.”
Killian nodded, his eyes serious and unwavering. “I know, love. And I think I know a way to prevent that.”
“What?” she asked, curious. He hesitated, looking at her with a strange, apologetic look in his eyes. “What is it?” she demanded, pulling away from him completely.
“I’m sorry, Emma. I couldn’t think of another way,” he said, sounding helpless.
“What do you-”
But before she could finish the sentence, he released a burst of magic her way. Emma gasped, feeling the Darkness hit her, the force of it sending her flying. She felt her magic flare up to fight against the invading power, the heavy, foul magic pushing its way through. Emma could feel it flow through her veins, her entire body unbearably hot. She could hardly move, laying slumped against a tree.
Emma gaped at Killian, the betrayal causing bile to rise in her throat, tears of anger threatening to fall. He looked remorsefully at her, his heartbreak apparent on his features.
“I am so sorry, Swan,” he called out. He threw the bean to the ground, the portal opening up immediately. “I love you. This was the only way I could make sure we see other again.”
Emma choked on a sob, feeling breathless and crippled, watching as Killian walked through the portal, leaving her with a gaping hole in her chest, and whatever spell he hit her with, destroying both her heart and soul, in one fell swoop.

Minnie Marvel’s Disney Weeks!!
soooooo later on in the month I’ll be on vacation which means I won’t be posting, but because i like writing I decided to take on a little project for the weeks before to sort of make up for it?? (nothing really to make up for except for myself to make me feel better bc I’ll want to post LOL)
Anyway I guess this will also be sort of like a challenge for me!!! Pick any marvel character you like and mix&match with a disney movie, disney song or disney movie quote and I’ll try my best to come up with a little oneshot!!
Now in order to keep myself from being overwhelmed I’m probably only going to be taking on five of these, so please keep that in mind when putting in a request!! After you’ve read everything that needs to be read in this post send in an ask with your request form and comment what your fave Disney character is so I know you’ve read the rules!!
Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, Loki, Peter Parker, T’challa, Bucky Barnes, Stephen Strange, Peter Quill, Wanda Maximoff, Pietro Maximoff, Vision
Here’s all the characters I’m willing to write for! Characters in bold are ones that I’ve written for previously (i’m not counting name blurbs because those are super short)!
Below are the combinations:
Disney Movies
1.Beauty and the Beast
2.Aladdin
3.Pirates of the Caribbean
4. Cinderella
5.Hercules
6.Alice in Wonderland
7.Tangled
Disney Songs *note if you pick a song I’ll probably use the movie with it unless you ask for me not to!*
1. Kiss the Girl
2.Once Upon a Dream
3. A Whole New World
4.Heaven’s Light
5.I Won’t Say I’m in Love
6.Sally’s Song
7.So Close
8.What Do You Know About Love
9.That’s How You Know
10. Can You Feel The Love Tonight
11. Evermore
Disney Quotes
1.“the flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all...”
“Sir?”
“You don’t meet a girl like that every dynasty,”
2. “The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.”
3. “I’m a damsel, I’m in distress, I can handle this. Have a nice day.”
4. “You don’t have to be timid, you must be bold and daring!”
5. “Even miracles take a little time.”
6.”If watchin is all you’re gonna do, you’re gonna watch your whole life go by without ya.”
7.”I’d rather die tomorrow then live 100 years without knowing you,”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whoooo now there’s a lot of options!! I won’t lie some of these quotes have specific people in mind, (i mean you all know what movies I match up with which marvel characters bwahahaha) but I’ll be happy to get anything in!!!
Now just a few more things before we go requestin!
A.) these might not all be taken!! The fics *SHOULD* be finished by the next two weeks before I leave on vacation. If they’re not done after I’ve come back then that means I decided not to take them. I’m sorry!!
B.) If a lot of requests come in then I’ll be putting crownfell on hold until the day before I leave so I have time to focus on requests!!
C.) You’ve got three choices of Disney prompts up there!! Use em!! You don’t have to use them all you can totally omit certain prompts (for example song fic+movie fic, quote+songfic, etc.) or keep it simple and just use one prompt!!
D.) Please please PLEASE one request per person!! If you send in more than one I’ll ignore all requests made. Also, I’d ask that you be following me before requesting!
E.) If i have a million requests for one character (say like my whole inbox is full of Peter Parker) I’ll DM you and ask if its okay to change your character!!
F.) Have fun requesting!!! Have a Disney song/quote/movie that’s heavy on your heart? Send it in!! Want something inspired off a disney RIDE??? Send it in!! Headcanons?? SEND EM!!!
Along with Crownfell, I’ll also be finishing the second part to the Destination Disney Roadtrip Headcanons!! It’s gonna be long and fun-filled so look forward to that (I bet y’all thought I forgot LOL)
Anyways!! Hope to see you in my inbox!!

Let's Play Crash Bandicoot 3 - Part 1
So, rather than make you all wait until I had totally finished Crash Bandicoot 3, I thought – why not make smaller posts about each section of the game as I go through it, since it’s all a new experience for me?
[cut for spoilers]
Packaging
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First off, I really like the holographic cover :) My old Crash Bandicoot 2 game had lost its cover/instruction manual ages ago, so I don’t even remember what that looked like.
Speaking of instruction books, I really miss when games came with them. Modern games are all about “intuitive controls” and “pop-up hints”, but I do kinda like having all the important info in one handy reference guide, especially since they are often humorous and feature unique artwork.
Opening cutscene
So, this is the game where Uka Uka makes his first appearance. What, you didn’t know that Aku Aku had a brother, and that he was secretly giving orders to Cortex all along? In terms of narrative it’s pretty similar to Crash suddenly having a sister in CB2. Also, Aku Aku can talk! I don’t know if he talked at all in CB1, but he certainly didn’t in the second game. But now he provides exposition and gameplay hints, and address Crash and Coco as “children” like a kindly grandfather.
Crash and Coco now have a house too, whereas in the intro to CB2 they were just hanging around outside. There’s at least one other house nearby, so do they live in a human village? Maybe that’s where Tawna lives? I do wonder why the siblings have the baby polar bear living with them – is it because we made its parent fall into a pit during the chase level in CB2? Also – and I had this question in the last game – but where exactly did Coco get her laptop? Is there a Circuit City out there in the jungle?
Time Twister
Why doesn’t Uka Uka have any minions guarding this thing? The bandicoots were able to just waltz in and start using it!
…Anyway, the hub level is very similar to CB2. You’ve got different worlds/areas, each with 5 levels, and a boss at the end. There’s no real consistency to the levels in each world – you might be in medieval times first, then underwater, then back with the dinosaurs. CB2 was a bit like that too, and I guess it’s designed that way to maintain variety, but I would probably like it more if each world had a unique theme that applied to all the levels in it.
One thing that’s a bit different from CB2 is that you are actually notified - right at the start of each world - of which boss you’ll eventually fight, and the boss will sometimes send the player messages. I do like that touch, as one of the problems I had with CB2 is that the bosses largely came out of nowhere. CB3 also represents the crystals, gems, and relics as already being in the enemy’s hands at the start, and each one you win gets moved from their side to yours, which is a satisfying feeling.
The basic movement controls are very similar to CB2, and the music has a similar vibe too. I like Crash’s new idle animation where he plays with a yoyo and gets tangled up in it ;)
I’ve finished the first world, so here’s my thoughts about each level:
Level 1-1 Toad Village
This is a medieval-themed world, with a very different setting and music from anything I’ve seen in CB2.
You can check at any time how many total crates there are in a level, rather than having to wait til the end.
There’s more background animations than in the past, with butterflies and birds flitting about, banners waving in the wind, smoke rising from chimneys, etc.
The “rotating” crates are a new experience. From what I understand, they’re a kind of roulette where you can pick what you get, but take too long and the crate becomes unbreakable.
The whole level design feels more open and you can see a lot more of the landscape than in CB2. The camera will pan to highlight views like the castle in the distance.
The Bonus platform has a new red/white/blue color scheme.
Bounce crates only have 5 bounces that give two wumpa each. I did think that bouncing 10 times could get a bit tedious…
Lab assistant appear right from the start, whereas in CB2 it takes a while before you see any.
While Crash largely controls the same, he does seem to have more forward momentum when bouncing on crates than I remember.
The crate gem was quite easy for this level – I wonder if there’ll be lots of hidden crates or split paths later.
Crash still does the Crash Dance when you get a gem :)
This is my first experience with the legendary Crash Bandicoot time trial relics. I wish it was a bit easier to keep track of how you are doing during the level – there’s no ghost to race against, and you can’t check the target time until you finish.
Time trials disable the bonus room and checkpoints. Fortunately, if you die you can start right again without losing a life.
After a few tries I was able to get the Sapphire relic. I’m not going to bother with the Gold relics right now, as they seem very difficult – maybe I need the speed boost power up for that?
Level 1-2 Under Pressure
First underwater level! I’d heard about these. The controls are a bit less precise, more “floaty”, than in the normal platform stages, but at least the steering makes more sense than CB2’s jetpack levels.
The music in this level is subdued and ambient, almost a bit eerie.
I’m not sure what time period this is supposed to be – the design of the tunnels is a bit Jules Verne-esque.
The jet sub is very fun to control, with its high speed and powerful torpedoes. I like blowing up the crates and sharks with it, and it produces a nice “bubbly” vibration while you’re riding it. It’s hard to come to a full stop though, and really frustrating when you lose the sub, as there are certain crates you can’t break otherwise.
There are eels and sharks and pufferfish enemies in this level. I wonder if we’ll see any cyborg animals at some point?
I was sure the Sapphire relic would be a huge pain on this level, but it actually wasn’t too bad, as the Aku masks and sub allow you to power through enemies.
Level 1-3 Orient Express
First level with Coco! This one takes place on the Great Wall of China, with very “oriental” music.
This is a “animal ride” level. The baby tiger is ridiculouslycute, and I feel so bad whenever it gets hurt o.o
The normal level isn’t too bad, but the only way to get the Sapphire relic is to use the “boost” button the whole time, so you’re playing in super-fast speed. Dodging obstacles with barely enough time to react, so you basically have to memorize them, isn’t how I normally like to play, but it is rather exhilarating.
Level 1-4 Bone Yard
This is the first prehistoric level. It alternates being chased by a triceratops with normal platforming. I’m not usually crazy about dinosaur-themed levels, but this one’s pretty good. It has a pretty unique aesthetic, where the ground is black and shiny like it’s obsidian (or oil?) interspersed with bright red lines of magma, there’s big mangrove-like trees towering above you, giant dinosaur skeletons littering the ground or buried in the walls…a bit creepy actually.
I found a red gem silhouette here, so I guess colored gems are making a return.
There’s also weird enemies that look like lab assistants, but they’re hiding out in the water? Are they supposed to be fish?
I like how there’s a separate crate tracker for bonus rounds, since once you leave them you can’t go back.
Level 1-5 Makin’ Waves
This is one of those Coco jet ski levels I’d heard about. The jet ski goes really fast, which makes it tricky to control, but makes jumping over ramps and doing flips very satisfying. This is the first level so far where the camera follows you as you turn, making the world feel dizzyingly large and open. Fortunately, there’s different colored buoys on each side, and even a giant arrow at the top of the screen, to make sure you’re going the right way.
I’m not sure why Cortex has an island cave shaped like his head, or why he has pirate ships with his face on them – are we to assume that the scientists actually spent months conquering each time period in order to get the gems/crystals?
I was sure this level would be another one where the Sapphire relic was a pain, but it wasn’t too bad!
World 1 Boss – Tiny Tiger
For some reason, this takes place in a gladiatorial arena, where Cortex watches on like an emperor. Tiny is also wearing gladiator armor. There’s even a crowd of lab assistants in the background who boo whenever Crash is winning.
Tiny starts the fight by jumping around trying to catch me, like in his CB2 fight, but this time I find it harder to predict where he’s going to land without the defined platforms.
He alternates that with sending out hordes of lions to attack us, and those can be a bit hard to dodge too. It reminds me of that one Mario Party minigame where you have football koopas trying to run you over.
Speaking of Tiny, why is he working for Cortex? I thought he was a boss sent by N. Brio in the last game…
After beating Tiny, I got the “Super-Charged Body Slam” powerup. Not sure how useful this will end up being.
Okay, that's all for now! We'll see if World 2 ramps up the difficulty ;)

“Swan?”
Emma’s eyes were just cracking open, disturbed by the sudden light blaring through the window. It must have woken them at the same time. Since when was sunlight so sharp?
In a few seconds, Emma’s brain caught up, forgetting the way Killian’s voice sounded when he’d just woken up. She barely took in how close they’d been sitting to each other, all but tangled up together. Normally, it would have freaked her out, but something else made her jerk upright.
That wasn’t sunlight.
“Shit.”
In the few seconds Emma had taken to process everything, Killian must have come to the same conclusion. They ripped off the blanket, scrambling to get their belongings. The fire had died out, only ashen embers left. Would there still be smoke? Would the newcomers have seen it?
Emma mumbled a series of curse words as she fumbled through the blanket to find her beanie. “What the hell are we gonna do?”
“Sneak out a window and make a run for it?”
“Killian, there’s snow - we’ll leave footprints and they’ll get us in their car in no time.” Something else hit Emma. “We’ve already left footprints. Shit, they’ll know someone was in their house straight away.”
“I think the smashed window would have been a dead giveaway anyways, love.”
She glared at him though he had a point. Shit, what were they going to do?
Emma looked out of the window as the car finally pulled to a stop, the headlights going out.
“Perhaps they’ll be understanding folks.”
“Killian, we smashed their window.”
“Aye, ‘cause we were desperate. We’ll pay for it and hope they can sympathize with a couple lost and near freezing to death.”
Now was not the time to stress over the way it sounded when Killian called them a ‘couple’.
The car door to the driver’s side opened, the light inside the car turning on. Emma couldn’t help but look.
Her stomach flipped when she did.
The woman driving - red, wavy hair - wasn’t entirely unfamiliar to Emma and she could take a guess at her name from the red-hatted man with a bruise on his face sitting next to her.
“Bloody hell,” Killian said, just as she said “fuck”.
Smee and Zelena were right at their heels, and Emma and Killian had nowhere to run to. They could probably take them down in a fight though, Emma mused.
“They might not know it’s us in here,” Killian said. “Could be they’re just looking for a place to stay themselves.”
“Do you really think that’s true?” Emma asked, doubtful.
Killian shrugged. “We could take a shot. Hop out of the bedroom window and hope they don’t follow us.”
“Or we could wait behind the door and knock something over their heads.”
“Rather violent, aren’t you, Swan?”
The grin he sent her way made the whole thing seem that much more bizarre to her. They’d kissed only two hours ago - yeah, she wasn’t forgetting that anytime soon - they were about to face someone who’d been following them for the past week, and had far from pure intentions, and somehow Killian found the time to grin at her like there was nothing going on but a chance to flirt.
As for her suggestion, well, Emma knew it wasn’t the smartest thing to do. A blunt knock on the head didn’t have to be lethal, but it would usually leave a bit of damage - not that Emma minded much with these two. She’d still rather not get herself into some big mess though. Breaking and entering was already enough. She was a lawyer for god’s sake!
“Fine. We’ll do it your way.”
“Actually love, I think you’ll find my way much more preferable,” Killian said, nodding at the car as Zelena and Smee stepped out of it. “She left the key in the ignition - we could end up benefiting quite nicely from this situation.”
Why the hell would she have left the key in the ignition?
Emma didn’t have much time to ponder that, too busy heading for the bedroom with Killian as Zelena and Smee neared the front door. Killian propped open the window with a bit of difficulty due to the frost and the window not having been opened in who knew how long. With a grunt, he managed to slide it open enough for them to pass through. He let Emma go first.
“We can’t take the car,” she said as she landed on the snow.
“We can’t take the car? Swan, don’t tell me you’ve gone all righteous on me now,” Killian said, crawling out of the window.
“It could be a trap,” Emma explained. “Why else would she leave the key in the ignition?”
“Because she doesn’t expect anyone to steal her car out in the snowy Norwegian wilderness?” Killian suggested as if it were obvious. “Or she’s just forgetful.”
“It’s a trap,” Emma upheld.
“What trap could possibly be worse than leaving us to run in the cold of the night while they’ve got a car?”
Emma thought of that for a moment, hating that he was right.
The front door clicking open sounded through the window, and both knew they hadn’t the time to stand there and argue.
“The car it is.”
While Smee and Zelena checked the inside of the cabin, Emma and Killian rounded the corners of the house, careful to duck under the windows.
“I’ll drive,” Emma whispered. They didn’t waste any time checking to see if Zelena and Smee had noticed them- they just ran for it.
Emma’s heart raced for a very different reason than it had two hours ago. She ripped open the car door and jumped in as Killian did the same. The slamming of the doors surely gave them away.
Just as well, as Emma turned the key and the car roared to life, Zelena came running out of the front door, Smee behind her. The woman looked absolutely murderous.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she shrieked as Emma started backing out of there. “You filthy thieves - you will pay for this!”
“Some other time maybe,” Emma muttered, turning the wheel and stepping on the gas. Hell, it felt good to be in a warm, moving car again. She almost forgot her previous suspicions.
A few seconds down the road, the cabin lost behind a hill, Emma’s face broke into a huge grin.
She’d stolen a car. She’d punched a man and locked him in at an airport, broken into a stranger’s house and now she’d stolen a car. A small laughter spilled from her lips, partly from the adrenaline and partly from the total craziness her life had become.
Killian joined in on the laughter, a deep and warm sound. Emma almost lost control of the car, laughter rolling through her to the point where a few tears were about to form.
This was crazy.
She had to be dreaming, there was no other explanation. This entire trip had to be a dream. Especially the part about her kissing Killian and that kiss being the best one she’d ever had. Yeah, now probably wasn’t the best time to think about that.
The laughter died out, and Emma would have expected some sort of panic to settle in, but in a few words, Killian had her grinning all over again.
“Commandeering a vessel, Swan? And you said you weren’t a pirate.”
While they neared the small harbour, Swan keeping a fast and steady speed, Killian finally got some reception on his old phone. They’d made a deal with Kristoff’s cousins to be there at half past eight, lend two mattresses for the night and then sail off in the early morning. That plan had obviously been derailed - it was now 11:23 in the evening.
Killian called the number Kristoff had given them. His cousins - two brothers - lived together in a small apartment by the seaside. They owned a few boats and liked to tinker with them and rent them out or sail with tourists, aside from going fishing. So far, they’d promised Emma and Killian they could borrow one of their oldest yet still functioning boats for a small price - they didn’t use it much anymore anyway. Killian hoped to push the deal so they could leave tonight, rather than the early morning. The less time Smee and Zelena had to catch up with them, the better.
“Is no one answering?” Swan asked after Killian had held the phone to his ear for a while without anyone picking up.
“Afraid not.” They were probably asleep. As much as Killian hated the thought of disturbing them, he knew they’d have to drive to their door and ring the bell until they woke. What else could they do?
Before he could pocket his phone, it started ringing. Killian flipped it open to see the number he’d just been trying to reach calling him back.
It seemed they weren’t that unfortunate after all.
Kristoff’s cousin was quite understanding of the whole car-breaking-down-situation, joking that of course Kristoff would lend them a terrible car. Killian wasn’t sure how much he should tell the fellow about them being followed, but he stressed that if they could sail tonight, it would be highly preferable.
The fellow didn’t mind at all.
“I trust you know how to sail in the dark - you said you’d been sailing most of your life, right?”
“Aye. It shan’t be a problem. Thanks again, mate.” Killian hung up and turned to Emma. “Looks like we’ll be going straight to Neverland tonight.”
---
Feeling more alive than he had in a long time - despite the late hour and the cold air - Killian steered the small sailboat out of the harbour. Kristoff’s cousins waved them off for a few minutes, but when Killian looked back to check a second time, the two men were gone. They deserved to go back home and sleep - they were bloody saints in Killian’s eyes for helping them like this. If - no, when they got back, Killian would be sure to give them a fine bottle of whatever-they-pleased to thank them.
“Could you fetch the compass, love?” Killian asked, keeping both hands on the ship’s wheel. Emma had never sailed before - not on a boat such as this at least. He didn’t need much help sailing such a small vessel, but Swan was quick and able to follow the simple requests he gave her. Provided he didn’t use too many “fancy ship words” as she put it.
Emma found the compass in his satchel which was secured in a small compartment by the helm. She studied it herself before handing it over to him. “It’s definitely pointing somewhere,” she noted.
“Aye - let’s hope it’s not merely due north, or we’ve got the wrong compass on hand.” Killian had his own small compass in the pocket of his leather coat for that exact occasion. He compared the two, quickly seeing that his uncle’s compass was faulty when it came to pointing north. Hopefully, it wasn’t just faulty.
Killian turned the wheel, setting their course.
“How long until the next step?” Emma asked.
“Haven’t a clue.”
Out on the open water at last, winds in their sails and moonlight shining through the clouds, Killian felt like he could finally breathe properly again.
Emma settled in on the built-in bench in front of the helm, looking out over the prow of the boat. Killian’s eyes were set forward as well, but they kept flickering down to Emma.
With all the rush of Smee and Zelena finding them, stealing their car, and racing towards the harbour, Killian hadn’t had the time to really think about what had happened in that cabin. It lingered in his mind the entire time, pushed back by what Killian deemed more important matters at the moment. Now, out on the open sea, nothing was stopping the memory of that kiss from flooding his mind.
She had kissed him. Emma Swan had kissed him. He’d imagined what it would be like several times before, looking at her mouth and noticing just how delectable her lips looked. No dream could ever compare to the real thing.
Bloody hell, he couldn’t remember the last time a kiss had gotten his heart racing like that, every nerve alighting. Since Milah, he hadn’t thought he’d ever end up feeling like that again. There’d been a few girls here and there, during lonely nights in low-lit bars, but to have a simple kiss make him feel so alive... he could hardly remember feeling that way, even with Milah. He and Milah had shared something special too; a fire in itself, but there was something about Emma that he just couldn’t describe.
It was a miracle he had fallen asleep at all on that couch, Emma right next to him.
Killian licked his lips, imagining that intoxicating feeling that hadn’t gone away until he fell asleep, but all he tasted now was the salt of the sea.
Emma sat in silence, perhaps grabbing the chance for a bit of rest. All Killian could see was the beanie covering her head, and the fur of her borrowed coat warming her neck. The wind caught a few strands of her hair; in the moonlight, the usually golden colour shined silver.
She’d entranced him. One kiss, and Killian knew there was no going back from the way he’d started to feel about Swan. One kiss wasn’t enough to find out what exactly it was that she did to him, how she made him feel more alive than ever. One kiss wasn’t enough for him at all.
Aside from the wind blowing in the sails and the waves lapping at the boat, the night was dead silent. Emma was tempted to fall asleep, the few hours she’d gotten earlier not at all enough. It was just so peaceful, despite the cold wind and the uncertain purpose of their moonlight sail-trip. She’d found a blanket to snuggle in, feeling a bit guilty for not doing much work. Killian didn’t seem to mind though. And in the end, knowing that he was right behind her, making sure they kept their course, was the very thing that kept Emma awake.
She’d gone several days without many hours of sleep before anyway. She could handle this.
Her thoughts kept returning to that heat-of-the-moment kiss. Except it hadn’t just been a heat-of-the-moment-thing, as much as she claimed it was. She couldn’t deny she’d been thinking about kissing him for the entire day (there’d also been that night when she’d first met him on the train in England, unaware of how much he’d come to mean for the case. He’d played a big part in keeping her awake that night too, but Emma chose not to think of that).
In the end, the moment had definitely turned heated, but Emma was fooling herself in thinking she hadn’t wanted to do it. Because she very much had. Now that she’d done it, she could put it past her though. The itch had been scratched (somewhat), the curiosity satisfied (again, somewhat). She was sure now that she meant it when she had said it was a one-time-thing.
No matter how much a part of her wanted it to be a several-times-thing.
At least Killian had seemed rather stricken as well. What was he thinking about, standing silently behind her? Was he having as much trouble forgetting everything as she was?
“Swan!” As if he’d known she’d been thinking of him, Killian blurted her name, startling her from her thoughts. “The compass - the needle’s started spinning.”
Emma whipped her head around to look at the compass for herself as he held it up for her to see. As he’d said, the needle had started to spin in circles without pause. Both knew what this meant.
Emma reached to open the small compartment wherein Killian’s satchel and the backpack with snacks lay. She found the sextant in his satchel, carefully wrapped in multiple layers of cloth.
“The sextant’s next right?” Emma asked, standing up. She kept the blanket around her shoulders, clutching it with one hand while holding the sextant out for Killian in the other.
“Aye, thanks love,” Killian said, taking the sextant.
“So I’m kinda trusting you know how to use that.”
Killian gave her a look as if offended she’d ever doubt him. “Of course I know how to use a bloody sextant, Swan. And fortunately for us, the skies have cleared up - although that may just be due to the magic of the compass. This sextant shows markings unlike any I’ve ever seen.” Killian studied the surface of the unwrapped sextant before looking up at the night sky. Emma followed his gaze. The skies had certainly cleared - Emma could have sworn there were clouds obscuring the moonlight just a few minutes before. “Aye, look there, love.” Killian pointed at a certain part of the sky.
Emma wasn’t sure what to look at. She’d never known much of constellations - the big dipper was about as far as her knowledge spanned - and all she saw was a group of stars, uncertain which belonged to each other. Who decided that anyways?
“That constellation there,” Killian said, pointing out the exact stars and the invisible lines between them as Emma stepped closer to him. She shouldn’t be able to feel his warmth through her jacket and the blanket, right? Emma ignored that for the moment, concentrating on finding the constellation. “It’s not a part of the sky as we - or anyone else in the world - knows it,” Killian continued.
Emma needed a second to process the exact meaning of his words.
“So it just doesn’t exist anywhere else than here? How’s that possible?”
“I think we need to re-evaluate our perception of what’s possible and what’s not if we want to go to Neverland, Swan.”
He had a point.
“So what’s next? Second star to the right and then straight on ‘till morning?”
Killian chuckled, eyeing the sextant again. “Not quite, but almost actually.”
He tried to explain how the sextant and everything worked, and were it not for the obvious passion he spoke with, which completely captivated her, she might have learned something. She listened, she really did, but her brain was too busy admiring the glow in his eyes. Killian really loved sailing. Just being out here, he almost seemed like an entirely different person; more relaxed. Like he was at home.
Emma finally understood what he meant when he said he wasn’t afraid of flying - that he just preferred other methods of travelling.
(Though she was still convinced he was afraid of flying.)
They sailed on for a while, minutes or hours, Emma wasn’t sure. At some point, she checked her phone for the time; it wasn’t even four in the morning yet. During the winter season, she knew the sun was late in rising in Norway - certainly not before seven at least. Yet stripes of red and yellow started to appear in the sky, like someone had painted over the black night with a thin brush.
Well, if the night sky was different from the rest of the world, Emma supposed they weren’t even in Norway anymore. They were in their own little bubble, like something out of a dream. Appropriate, Emma thought, since Neverland was supposedly the island of dreams.
Only then did it start to dawn on Emma that Killian really had been telling the truth - not that she’d ever doubted that he believed it was the truth. Emma only believed in what she saw. She wouldn’t believe in Neverland, wouldn’t believe in magic until she had actual proof.
Well, the proof was beginning to pile on, it seemed.
Emma turned to Killian. He had let her try out steering the wheel while he focused on the sextant. It was quite exhilarating really, steering the boat on her own, wind blowing in her hair. She felt like she should be in a movie or something.
Killian had turned his head towards Emma just as she turned hers. They didn’t need words to communicate the thought in both of their heads when they saw the rising sun.
They’d reached the final step.
While Emma kept her hands on the wheel, Killian went to exchange the sextant for the spyglass. She expected him to look through it straight away, but - ever the gentleman - he held it out for her to look through it first.
“You sure you don’t want the first look?”
“I’d rather you found out first and let me know what to expect.”
She knew he wasn’t entirely honest, but let it go anyway.
The winds weren’t strong anymore and Emma could easily let go of the wheel for a moment to take the spyglass.
She twirled it in her hands for a few seconds. All around her, nothing could be seen but open water. It felt silly to look through a spyglass - she wasn’t even sure where to look. Towards the sunrise she supposed.
Anticipation raced through her and she tried to calm herself down, preparing herself for the likely event that she wouldn’t be able to see anything once she lifted the spyglass. But everything else had turned out to be true...
Here goes nothing, Emma thought, raising the spyglass to her eye.
“Bloody hell.”
Killian spoke just as Emma felt like her heart might stop. Through the lens, right there on the horizon, an island that hadn’t been there before loomed as if it had never been anywhere else.
But why was Killian the one swearing?
Emma lowered the spyglass, turning to question Killian. Not before taking one more look at the horizon though. And even without looking through the spyglass, Emma saw the island with her own two eyes - no tricks, no illusions.
“Do you see it?” she asked, confused because the way Killian looked at the horizon spoke clearly that he saw the island as well.
“Aye - what, do you not?” Killian met her gaze, suddenly worried.
“No, yes, I see it. I just, I thought you had to look through the spyglass to see it.”
Killian thought of it for a second, then gave a small shrug. “Perhaps it’s enough if only one on the vessel looks through the spyglass.”
She nodded, satisfied with his answer. Her eyes were quickly drawn to the island again; just to be sure it was still there. It was just... it was unbelievable.
“We found Neverland,” she whispered, as if to assure herself that her eyes weren’t lying to her. Louder, she repeated it, “Killian, we found Neverland!”
A grin threatened to split her lips, still cracked from the cold. Killian wore a matching grin on his face. “That we did, Swan.”
Both broke into a chuckle, still not sure whether to believe their eyes or not. Emma felt that pull again, to reach for Killian and throw her arms around him. To hold him close and let the laughter tumble out of them as they realized - fully realized - that Neverland was real.
She didn’t though. Instead, she let the blanket fall off her shoulders. With the rising sun, it seemed the cold had disappeared. In fact, Emma felt like she would melt if she kept her jacket on for one more second. She took it off, along with her beanie, as Killian unbuttoned his own coat, commenting on the sudden warmth.
“I guess we’re definitely not in Norway anymore,” Emma said.
“Either that or we’ve lost our minds.”
“That’s probably more likely.”
They shared another grin, and Killian held his hand out towards the steering wheel. “Would you like the honours, love?”
She was about to take the wheel again when she realized the sudden warmth brought another factor with it. She looked up at the sails and sure enough -
“There’s no wind.”
Killian seemed to have realized it on his own as well.
“Fortunately for us, there’s an outboard engine for this boat. It’s not the best, but it should do the job.”
Killian went to open a larger compartment in the boat, and Emma helped him settle the engine in its place. Killian took over the wheel after the engine had roared to life and Emma tried to judge the distance to the island. About five miles? She couldn’t be sure.
After a while though, Emma was almost a hundred percent sure that the distance hadn’t changed.
“Is it just me, or are we not getting any closer to the bloody island?” Killian asked, voicing her exact concern.
“No, it’s not just you.”
Emma heard him mutter “bloody hell”, but he didn’t give up. Kept sailing straight towards the island - and never got any closer.
A few minutes more, and the engine started tutting. Before long, it died out.
Emma wanted to scream. The island was right there - it shouldn’t have taken more than a few minutes to sail up to the shore. What the hell was going on?
“Are you sure we did everything right?” she asked. “There’s not some other object we need or some stupid ritual we need to preform? We don’t have to wait for Peter Pan to come and get us? Or Tinker Bell maybe?” She was beyond frustrated - and Killian was too.
“No, we’ve done everything right - there are no more objects according to the legends, nothing else that needs to be done.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m sure, Swan!” He didn’t exactly shout, but Emma couldn’t describe it any other way than a growl. Why was he being angry with her? Okay, maybe she didn’t need to sound so doubtful of him, but what else could she do? Clearly, they were missing something.
Emma dropped to sit on the planks, folding her legs underneath each other, all but glaring at the island on the horizon.
Killian dropped to sit beside her. She knew he wasn’t angry at her, just as he knew she didn’t doubt him. Both were just entirely too tired to deal with this.
A strong drink would have been wonderful right then. Too bad they’d already drunken all of the rum.
“Perhaps we’re meant to swim?” Killian suggested as a last hopeless resort.
“I don’t think it would help much.”
“Probably not... We’re missing something.”
