Week 10 wraps up with the Broncos @ the Bills on Monday Night Football
Too many penalties and turnovers doomed the Bills as they lose to the Broncos on a walk-off field goal. With just seconds remaining, the Bills got called for pass interference, putting the Broncos in field goal position. But after Broncos K Wil Lutz missed a 41-yarder, the Bills get another 5-yard penalty for having 12 men on the field and Lutz makes the 36-yard FG as time expired.
so sad

The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012)
Tumblr media
So THIS is what it’s all been building up to? I know fans of this series eat the story up like it’s the food from heaven, but now I’m wondering whether the entire Twilight franchise wasn't a joke.
Tumblr media
After Bella (Kristen Stewart) awakens from her transformation from human to vampire, she is initially horrified to discover that her rapidly-aging newborn daughter, Renesmee has been betrothed to the werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner). While she and Edward (Robert Pattinson) digest the idea, the Volturi approach, intent on annihilating the Cullens and their allies.
There’s nothing that happens in this film, or in the previous one to validate it be split into 2 parts. While we get the big battle and the drama that’s been promised since Eclipse, it could’ve all fit comfortably in a single film. Padded out like this, it's often boring and packed full of fan service that doesn’t mean a thing in the end.
To watch Breaking Dawn Part 2 is to suffer through an endless parade of introductions to characters you don’t care about. From the way they're credited, it feels as if director Bill Condon suddenly realized that Twi-hards would burn the theatres to the ground if their favorite vampire – be it Zafrina (Judi Shekoni), Siobhan (Lisa Howard), Vladimir (Noel Fisher) or some other overpowered, one-dimensional bloodsucker – didn’t show up for a minimum of 30 seconds. I kept assuming it would lead up to something, and in a way it does. Whether you find it clever and satisfying, or you tell me there aren’t enough “A”s in the world to spell a “Whaaaat!?” long enough to describe your reaction I'm not sure. I fall somewhere in the middle myself.
This final (thank goodness) chapter continues to raise unanswerable questions and create numerous plot holes. Once AGAIN, Alice Cullen (Ashley Greene) proves that if she stuck around and acted like someone who’s been able to predict the future for decades would actually act, the story would be over in a matter of minutes. This means she's promptly written out of the story as soon as possible. Again, these vampires haven’t realized that humans have invented these things called ‘guns’ and don’t need to go into battle empty-handed. Everyone we see is a slave to a predetermined ending and a mythology created without a single secondary thought.
With a truly legendary performance from Michael Sheen (it’s so bad you have to see it to believe it), a determined fidelity to the original story (complete with plot holes), and a final conclusion so bold I think I have to call it brilliant, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 should be gold for fans and for amateurs of shoddy cinema. I found it as pleasant and entertaining as a long wait sitting to get my teeth scraped at the dentist. The best thing about Breaking Dawn Part 2 is that I won’t have to sit through it, or any of the other films, ever again now that it’s finally over. (On Blu-ray, June 23, 2017)

The “Wait, I Die in this Play??” Tier List
Under the cut for play spoiler purposes :3
Each level of dying in a play overrides the previous ones, so if a character has a role that almost dies AND a role that does die, they’re listed as “has died in a play.”
Tumblr media
For the full rundown of having died in a play (this is game-verse; mankai stage would change some things up--notably Kazu would go up into almost dies thanks to Paul’s new development):
Sympathy for the Angel: Michael (Tsumugi) fades away at the end to nothingness
Stranger: Dom (Banri), Jon (Juza), and Nine’s (Sakyo) fates are unclear after the lab explodes
A Clockwork Heart: I’m counting S (Citron) being deactivated as a death in spirit
Ginji the Wanderer: Yokota (Omi) is killed by Ginji; Ginji himself (Sakyo) and Kojima (Taichi) are both critically injured during fights with Yokota and his men
Nocturnality: Franz (Hisoka) and Reo (Azuma) are both vampires, which puts them in “dead the whole time;” however, Reo being stabbed by Izumi bumps him up to “almost dies”
The Wonderful Charlatan of Oz: It’s implied that the Wizards of the East (Tsuzuru) and West (Itaru) are killed offstage by Dorothy by the end of the play
DEAD/UNDEAD: Red (Omi) and Bill (Sakyo) are dead at the start of the play, but are also killed again; Abel (Azami) is techically? Sort of? Half? Dead the whole time but it’s ok Azami dies in a later play; Roy (Taichi) dies in the beginning and then comes back and dies again, making Taichi the true king of dying in plays
The Phantom of the Opera: Richard (Homare) and Erik (Guy) both don’t escape the fire, but their bodies are never found
Knights of the Round IV: Gareth (Masumi) dies in the battle to free Gwen from her wedding to Arthur; (Merlin is defeated but he’s like. a demon and very clearly alive in the very end so he doesn’t count. I also wasn’t sure about King Arthur’s illness, but I think it’s safe to say Merlin didn’t plan for him to die then so)
Die by the Sword: Tojiro (Homare) has an attempt on his life; Kojiro (Guy) is killed by Musashi in their duel
Fallen Blood: The ending is ambiguous enough for me to feel comfortable saying it’s unclear if Blood (Juza) makes it through that last day
Yin Yang Midnight: Geppaku (Citron) is killed by what amounts to magical recoil; Hisui (Guy) then allows himself to be slain
Stray Devil Blues: Walter (Omi) is killed offscreen; Cliff (Azami) is very much killed onscreen; Mark (Taichi) dies while trying to help Lucifer near the very end
Immortal Crow: Tsugunobu (Misumi) is wounded severely enough to put him out of commission for several scenes; Minamoto no Yoritomo’s (Chikage) fate is unclear after his battle with Kurou
+3Ghosts!: Sora (Kumon), Aoi (Kazunari), and Minato (Muku) are dead the whole play. However I’m not counting fading away after completing your unfinished business and finally being able to move on as a death
Twin Kingdoms: Gilbert (Tasuku) and Sasha (Azami) (and Lutz but Shift isn’t in the tier list) are struck down by the dragon and wouldn’t have made it if Cain hadn’t been able to defeat it
South. Hill. Prison.: Ren (Azami) is dead the whole time

The History of Zoinks (Essay)
Includes an etymological and cultural analysis of the usage of "jeepers," "jinkies," and "zoinks." Another post will include the follow-up study.
If you grew up watching Scooby-Doo, it may be easy to assume that groovy green tees, ascots, and vans painted with flowers were all standard 60s fare. However, recall that these teens were not written by teens; when the first episode aired, character designer Iwao Takamoto was 41, main writer Bill Lutz was 47, and creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were 36 and 31, respectively. Were they already out of touch? As put by Paul Dini, writer on Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo: “When you look at those characters, they are characters frozen in time. They’re not really what hippies or hipsters or cool kids were like. They’re what 50-year olds thought cool kids were like” (“Scooby Doo! The Whole World Loves You”).
The most iconic quantifiers of how close these characters were to the “cool kids” is their catchphrases: “jeepers,” “jinkies,” and “zoinks!” When we hear the cartoon’s catchphrases, which claim to characterize this era, we must ask: Did people really say these things? Even though these terms are almost exclusively associated with the franchise today, these words were not born for marketing. The writers were pulling from memories, trends, and histories which, if we trace backwards, may glean some evidence as to their cultural accuracy.
Daphne’s classic “jeepers” is said to have been first penned in 1928 by cartoonist Billy DeBeck, whose popular Barney Google strips coined similar terms as “heebie-jeebies” and “holy moly” (Chakraborty and Dosad 117). The true origin of the word is likely several decades earlier, as Google’s catchphrase “Horsefeathers!” was already coming out of fashion among the construction workers that used it when DeBeck revived it in his parody of Appalachian colloquialisms (Funk and Funk ix-x). At the time DeBeck picked up “jeepers,” it was used as a euphemism for “Jesus!” (Harper, “Etymology of jeepers”).
However, the Scooby-Doo writers were more likely to be familiar with Al Donahue’s song “Jeepers Creepers” (as in, “Jeepers creepers, where’d you get those peepers?”). The song jumped high enough in America’s popular music charts in 1939 that it was covered by Louis Armstrong, Larry Clinton, and later Frank Sinatra (Whitburn 533). As an alteration of “Jesus Christ,” the flexible phrase was perfect for bouncy love ballads (“Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!”) and as a horror movie motif in Jeepers Creepers. The fact that the film was released in 2001 speaks to the staying power of “jeepers.”
As for Velma’s catchphrase, “jinkies,” it may be a variation of a number of old Scots terms dating around the 18th-19th century, so you may as well pick your favorite: a synonym for “jauntily” (as “jink,” to dodge or flee; nowadays “to juke” may be applicable), a nonsense word in nursery rhymes (e.g., “Eetum, peetum, penny pie / Cock a lory, jinky jye”), or a child’s nightgown (Dictionary of the Scots Language); a type of knitted fingerless glove (see Kate Davies Designs); or yet, as a derivation of “high jinks,” a drinking game that dates back to at least the 17th century (Harper, “Etymology of jinkies”).
The term was first recorded as exclamation “By jinkies!” in the newspaper strip “Ella Cinders” in 1936. The first recorded use of the term by a human (assuming comic characters can’t mail in letters to the local paper) was in a 1938 edition of the Northern-Courier in the sports section. Ray writes: “By jinkies, on my next pass day I will surely stop and see that 178 foot wheelbase, fire truck. If I can’t make it in one day maybe I can get an extension. Some truck.” (How many feet is the Mystery Machine’s wheelbase, I wonder…?) Again, “jinkies” is preceded by “by,” which Velma, as we all know, would choose to omit. By Scooby’s birthday, the term was popular among college students and “overly earnest” speakers (Iseli), fitting for the youngest of the gang who is always piping up with a clue to prove her intellectual merit.
Unlike “jeepers” and “jinkies,” which have decent pedigrees preceding Scooby-Doo, neither “zoinks” nor “zoink” directly appear in any written work before 1969, although they have a number of distant cousins. The closest approximation comes from television: a famous bit in 1958’s “Robin Hood Daffy” where Daffy swings from tree to tree, calling, “Zoiks, and away!” with each jump, only to crash face-first into a tree every time. His iconic lisp makes it difficult to parse whether he’s saying “zoiks” or “yoiks.” The latter would seem more likely, as “yoiks” and its sister “hoiks” have a long history as hunting words. On a bright and early morning in 1843, Sir Godfrey calls for his friend to hurry and saddle up: “Hoik, 'squire! . . . hoik, hoik! High wind him! Drag on him, yoiks, tally-ho!" (Mills 125). On the tail of a fox chase in 1774, a hunter in pursuit exclaims, “Yoiks, hark forward!” (Kelly 6). Contextually, neither sound too far from the modernized “Zoinks, let’s scram, Scoob!” The first “zoiks” was penned around 1584, in a sonnet of all things: “With mightie maters mynd I not to mell, / As copping Courts, or Comonwelthis, or Kings / Quhais craig zoiks fastest, let tham sey thame sell; / My thoght culd nevir think vpon sik things” (Montgomery 1–4). I can’t claim a clue about what the rest means, but “zoiks fastest” leads me to think this is a “jink”/”juke” situation; in “zoiking”, the narrator is fleeing from the cowersome courts, commonwealths, and kings. Coincidentally, “mynd I not to mell” sounds almost adjacent to “meddle,” another word popularized by Scooby-Doo. All of the “zoinks” family are employed as interjections preceding movement.*
In sum, while “jinkies” appears to have had some relevance at the time of Scooby-Doo’s inception, “jeepers” is a bit dated in comparison, and “zoinks” has a vast etymological tree but no direct precursors. The advantage to having a cast of characters who are, in the words of Paul Dini, “frozen in time,” is that they are living time capsules. We can choose any point within 50 years and see unique perceptions of culture, politics, music, style, and our focus: vocabulary. But how well do these perceptions line up with reality?
*All, that is, except one. “Yoiks” may also be used to refer to egg yolks, as in a cookbook from 1762: “Take a large Fowl, or a Pound of Veal, as much grated Bread, half a Pound of Sewet . . . Mace, two Cloves, half a Nutmeg grated, about a large Tea Spoonful of Lemon-peel, and the Yoiks of two Eggs” (Glasse 38). Add an olive toothpick on top and you have a Shaggy sandwich!

Boeing F-15EX completes first phase of integrated testing
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/14/2023 - 11:00am in Military
The F-15EX recently completed the first phase of its initial operational test and evaluation (IT&E) program with the launch of an AGM-158 joint air-surface missile (JASSM), the highest-range air-to-ground missile in the U.S. Department of Defense combat inventory.
The JASSM has a range of about 230 miles, according to a U.S. Air Force information leaflet.
The F-15EX is the first U.S. Air Force aircraft to undergo an integrated program of tests and evaluations. The combination of the IOT&E and DOT&E effort is unique to the program, in that the existing test data of the legacy F-15C/D and F-15E can be compared with the data from the new EX, with a special focus on the new features unique to EX, such as its advanced processor and fly-by-wire control system. The EX also has more weapon stations than the F-15E, allowing it to carry more war material.
Tumblr media
In November 2022 tests, the F-15EX demonstrated that it can carry up to 12 AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles.
“Proving the ability of the F-15EX to employ three JASSMs after witnessing the validation of the air-to-air domain paper with a load of 12 AMRAAM that it can fire is incredible,” said Major Calvin Conner, commander of the F-15 division of the 85º Test and Evaluation Squadron. "The firepower that four F-15EX jets bring to a combatant commander is tremendous."
Tumblr media
JASSM was launched during the Combat Hammer exercise, held at Hill Air Base in Utah in August. The shot was performed simultaneously with the 53ª Wing Weapon System Evaluation Program, which required a collaborative effort between the 83º and 86º Fighter Weapon Squadrons. The details of the shot - the targets, ranges, etc. - are confidential, but have been strongly evaluated, from the construction of the weapon to the use and analysis of the missile routes, to the target.
"This test shows innovation and results in the rapid delivery of state-of-the-art capabilities to the fighter. That's exactly what our fighters need from us," said Mark Sears, vice president of Boeing Fighters. "The F-15EX is the most affordable and immediate way to renew the capacity and upgrade the capabilities of the U.S. Air Force and we are ready to deliver additional aircraft later this year."
Tumblr media
With Phase I of the F-15EX IT&E completed, the data from this phase will be analyzed for the final report to guide a total production decision determination in the coming months.
Tumblr media
The U.S. Air Force plans to buy 104 F-15EX fighters, although this number could rise to 110 if some changes to the 2024 fiscal year defense bill are enacted.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure if any of the events in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 excuse its 117-minute running time. When the film isn’t so bad it'll have you in hysterics, it’s a load of extra sudsy teenage melodrama with a whiff of supernatural added for spice. An aggressive writer could’ve summarized everything important in about 20-35 minutes, making the fact that this is merely a "Part 1" feel more than a little cash-grabby. At least it’s more interesting than the profoundly dull chapter that preceded it?
It’s Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen’s (Robert Pattinson) big day. Unfortunately, the nuptials bring with them danger when the new bride becomes pregnant. With the hybrid fetus draining Bella of her life, tensions between the vampires and werewolves begin rising again, with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) swearing revenge if anything happens to his beloved.
The terrible writing has reached its apex. I can’t spoil the last act and I doubt you’d believe me if I told you. Let me say that I think it kind of has to be seen. Before the film becomes unintentional comedy gold, it’s a dog’s breakfast. Once again, the series displays little ability to handle its own mythology. Bella's unexpected pregnancy confounds all that surround her. Alice (Ashley Greene) once again can’t see the future thanks to the baby's otherworldly prenatal abilities and we get a truly preposterous “is it a boy or a girl”? buildup thanks to the hybrid’s anti ultrasound barrier. Too bad she’s not giving birth to Blade, then we’d have a real movie! Meanwhile, Jacob sits in a corner, alternatively fuming about the fact that his crush has gotten married to a monster instead of him and about to burst into tears because she refuses to terminate the pregnancy and is sure to die (you might envy her). If you’re a fan of the books, you already know what’ll happen next but you’re foaming at the mouth with excitement. Everyone else will be on their knees praying for it to stop.
Thankfully, Breaking Dawn: Part 1 constantly one-ups the nonsense. It makes a plot that should be as interesting as Edward Cullen’s pasty chest oddly fascinating. The performances have also improved and the Swan-Cullen wedding looks great. This is a terrible film, but that’s the story’s fault. As a faithful adaptation that's not ashamed of its source material? No one could’ve done it better. And that ending! It’s so ill-conceived it’s magical. I couldn’t believe it. Maybe I still don’t. Is it possible for a movie to drive you insane?
In a way, I admire Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part 1. It’s like a fat, hairy man at a nude beach who proudly throws down his towel and says “What are you going to do about it?” This film doesn’t care that it makes no sense, that even for a Twilight film it’s poorly written and that anyone who hasn’t been brainwashed by Stephenie Meyer’s novels will laugh it off the stage. It tells its moronic tale, sets itself up for a sequel, and does it with a straight face. (On Blu-ray, May 26, 2017)

Angels There With You Tonight
A/N: Angst warning. Slightly inspired by a story by @rosesforshego, which I cannot discuss or else it will spoil this one. AU, featuring the henchmen. (Gothicthundra, you're probably gonna wanna skip this one.) Enjoy, perhaps.

"Hey! Hey, Boss!"
SPLASH!
A series of muttered grumblings followed as Dr. Drakken stood up from where he had fallen into the cold, blue waters of the moat that ran through his lair. The henchman who had tried to warn him, Lutz, huffed and puffed as he bounded forward and grabbed his boss's arm. He tugged uselessly at the elbow of the sodden man until he finally helped himself and stepped back to the rocky ledge.
"You've really...gotta watch where you're going, Boss," Lutz said in concern as he caught his breath, stepping back respectfully once Drakken was safely on his feet.
The blue-skinned man grunted briefly in acknowledgment, not looking at his loyal employee.
He shuffled off, presumably to change clothes. Lutz watched him with his brow twisted in worry until he turned the corner and then listened until the echo of footsteps faded. Soon the only sound was the slowly running waters of the moat.
The portly henchman turned and looked down at the stream of blue water that cut through the cave-lair's floors in every room. 'For the aesthetic,' had been the explanation when the lair was purchased and customized, and it was a good use of the natural spring below. The waters also fed the plumbing throughout the lair, and the swimming pool Dr. Drakken had put in for them after they threatened to go to the Henchmen's Union over a lack of proper recreational provisions.
He walked along the actual pathway, avoiding stumbling into the moat like his boss occasionally did for ignoring its presence despite having insisted upon it, and made his way toward the lab. He considered how his boss had tripped into the moat more and more often lately, racking up the dry cleaning bill and possibly catching a cold on one occasion when he'd simply sat in the water and threw a tantrum, shouting for his side-kick and blaming her for his error.
Lutz cringed and shook his head at the memory.
In the lab, a trio of his compatriots was trying to make sense of the latest plan their boss had instructed them on before his departure. They had successfully stolen the giant laser, though not without some bumps and bruises, and Dr. Drakken had been insistent that they enact the plan that night.
Murphy was scratching his head as Lutz approached, while Jameson nursed a shiner and Lars held an ice pack to his wrist.
"Really got us this time, didn't she?" Lutz commented idly as he leaned over the crudely drawn plan on the workbench.
"He fall in again?" Jameson asked.
Lutz nodded as he looked down at the crayon drawing of the stolen giant laser blowing up the state capital. He cringed when he looked at the blue and green stick figures standing side-by-side.
"Someone's gotta tell him," Lars said with authority.
"We've tried before," Murphy reminded the bulkier man.
Lutz considered the dilemma and how they had all made attempts to broach the sensitive subject with their boss in their own unique ways, some with subtle commentary, and others with blunt declarations. But all of it had fallen on deaf ears. So they went on, catering to the employer they were all perhaps a little too devoted to, and hoped that his vivid imaginings wouldn't one day prevent them from achieving their goals in evil.
BOOM!
Lutz's musings were interrupted then by an explosion that rocked even the stone floor of the lair. The crystal blue waters of the moat splashed and overflowed their boundaries for a moment as rubble rained down upon them and daylight forced its way in.
"Oh, no..." Murphy moaned.
"It can only be..." Jameson began.
"Kim Possible!" Dr. Drakken's voice rang from the doorway behind them, and the group turned to see their boss wearing a fresh lab coat, but hair still wet and plastered down to his forehead. "Get her, ngh! Shego!"
The four henchmen grabbed their electro-staves and took up stances as the teen heroine and her side-kick swung down into the lair from her hair-dryer grappler, the former landing with a smirk and fists at the ready while the latter stumbled a few steps and landed in a heap at her side, his pet naked-mole rat falling from his shoulder in the process.
"Not trying very hard this time, are you Drakken?" the cheerleader quipped, staring at the mad scientist in challenge.
"Nghn! Ggh! Agh! Shego!"
Lutz took a deep breath, already knowing how it would end, but lunged forward anyway, swinging the electrified end of his staff toward the teen hero. She reacted with an offensive move as well, dodging with a handspring and landing a two-footed kick to his chest. He fell hard on his back and saw stars, barely having the presence of mind to turn off his staff as he listened to the sounds of combat around him.
"Ron! Get the laser!"
"On it, Kim!"
Lutz sat up and tried to catch his breath. Through the black clouds and bright sparks that were his vision, he saw the blond boy affix the grappler to the giant laser and push a button to retract the cable, beginning to lift their newly acquired weapon up through the hole the teen duo had blasted to make entrance.
"Nagh!"
Lutz looked to see Dr. Drakken tugging at his wet hair in panic as he watched the prize being stolen from him faster than they'd swiped it themselves.
"Ggh! Negh! They're...stealing the laser! Shego!"
"You know," the blond said to the naked-mole rat on his shoulder as he rode the laser upward to escape, "he rarely makes sense, but I still don't understand that word he always says."
Lutz got to his feet and took a breath, activating his staff again as he readied to rush for the side-kick and the weapon of mass destruction. But he had barely taken a step before Murphy was tossed into him by the redhead, knocking the wind out of him again and giving him a nasty crack to the skull as his head hit the stone.
"Sorry, Drakken, but the government has other plans for this laser," Possible said smugly.
Lutz peered out from the pile of his defeated fellows just in time to see the cheerleader vault up to where the blond boy was waiting for her with a smile and open arms about twenty feet in the air.
"Whoa, whoaaaa!" he cried as in catching her he lost some of his balance. He managed to fall onto the laser itself, saving himself from a dangerous tumble, but inadvertently activating it. Everyone, the teen heroine included, gasped in fright as a bright red beam crackled to life and tore through the walls of the lair, bringing more of it down upon them.
It was every man for himself amid the destruction, and Lutz scrambled out of the pile as quickly as he could to take shelter under the workbench while more chunks of stone fell around them. The deafening whine of the laser was suddenly silenced and followed by an annoyed: "Ron!" No doubt it had been Possible who had saved them from certain death, even though she had nearly condemned them as well.
Lutz squinted upward through clouds of dust as the laser disappeared along with the two teens and their rodent, a sinking feeling coming over him seconds before the dust hit his nose and he sneezed. It was then that he realized his fellows had taken shelter with him, their coughs sounding around him.
His heart skipped a beat when he realized the most important person in the room wasn't under the bench with them, so he quickly crawled back out, the roughened rock rubble pressing painfully into his palms through the glove leather as he looked around.
"Dr. Drakken? Dr. Drakken!"
A familiar silhouette was taking shape through the dust clouds, and Lutz's expression twisted in worry despite the irony as he realized his boss was seated, once again, in the debris-darkened blue waters of the moat.
"Boss?" Lutz said as he righted himself and started forward. He could hear the others slowly following after him.
"She... She..." Dr. Drakken began in a pout, "she thinks she's all that, but... Why... Why does she always defeat me!?"
The whining, furious man stumbled back to his feet and climbed out of the moat, approaching the henchmen who all halted in their tracks.
"You never used to be this incompetent! Why do I still sign your paychecks if you can't even defeat one teen cheerleader who has half of your skills!"
"Aw, thanks Boss— Ow!" Murphy exclaimed when nudged hard by Jameson.
Lutz had reflexively taken a step back from Dr. Drakken's ranting and bumped into Lars, who was frowning.
"Dr. Drakken," he began carefully, but the blue-skinned man was already continuing his rant as he began pacing a small circle, nearly slipping into the moat again.
"Years of service, and this is the best you can do for me? I've seen you leave hordes of armed guards in a whimpering heap!"
Lutz glanced worriedly at Lars, who glared down at him. He took a deep breath and started forward. He'd known the boss the longest, after all...
"You'd better get your act together soon, Shego, or else I'll—"
Lutz grabbed Dr. Drakken's shoulders, effectively stopping him in his tracks. The man's vision took a moment to focus down on the overweight, loyal henchman, registering his presence for a long moment before his reaction was a deep scowl.
"Lutz! Can't you see I was in the middle of disciplining Sheg—"
"Dr. Drakken. I don't...none of us... That is, we don't mind that you have this...imaginary friend. But we're worried about..."
"It's affecting our plans," Murphy butted in.
"The execution of your schemes," Jameson clarified quickly.
"We'd have taken over the world by now if you weren't always expecting this pretend henchgirl to materialize and do all the work!"
Lars had gestured with both hands to the damp, dust-covered and torn drawing of the plan that had ended up on the floor nearby as he spoke. Lutz watched as Dr. Drakken's gaze drifted down and rested upon the stick figure of a green-clad, frowning woman with raven hair, standing next to the evilly-grinning blue stick figure that represented the mad scientist.
"Why...!?" The single word had been spoken in a gasp, and with so much affront that Lutz released his boss and took a step back. The fury in the dark eyes was evident to all in the room, and he wondered if confronting the man, especially after such a horrible defeat, had been wise.
"Imaginary!?" Dr. Drakken continued, taking a step forward, the threat clear in his dark eyes. "Shego was—!"
He fell silent suddenly, his jaw snapping shut with a chick as his eyes widened and his brow rose in clear revelation of something. His gaze grew distant, though no less shocked as the seconds began passing and the settling of dust was the only sound in the cavern save the hindered flow of the moat.
"...Boss?" Lutz ventured carefully.
Dr. Drakken blinked back to awareness, seeming only then to finally realize where he was and what had happened. He surveyed the destruction around them and then finally made eye contact with each of them, his eyes resting upon Lutz at the last.
The rotund henchman took a breath and opened his lips to speak, but Dr. Drakken turned on his heel and strode briskly out of the room.
"Hey, Boss! Watch out for the—!"
SPLASH!
All four men took hurried steps forward, but this time their boss was on his feet and practically fleeing the room before they had made it three steps.
The group all stopped and released a collective held breath and looked around as Dr. Drakken had done, and then at each other.
"Guess we're moving..." Murphy said, rubbing his neck with a grimace.
"You're too new, the boss never moves. I'll get word to the others that we gotta rebuild again," Jameson said with a sigh, beginning to peer among the rubble for the telephone.
Lutz nodded to them both and then looked up at Lars, who met his eyes with a hard, curious expression. Then he turned his gaze toward the hallway where their boss had vanished to, his brow knitting further before he looked back to his compatriot.
"Did he say...'was'?"
----------------------
The bedroom was miraculously undisturbed, and for the second time in perhaps less than twenty minutes, Drakken was stripping and seeking dry clothes. This time however he didn't make it further than donning his bathrobe, the rock and dust plastered to his skin and hair from the lab collapse and repeated falls into the moat leaving him feeling grimy and in dire need of a shower.
But after changing he couldn't make himself do more than carefully step over the moat and fall onto his mattress, despite knowing he'd regret the laundry the next day. He tried to take stock of what was sore and tender from the falls and the ordeal with Possible, but his mind wouldn't even allow him that distraction. Unwanted and unable to be silenced, it kept repeating the words of his henchmen over and over, ending cruelly with the words that had slipped through his own lips in a brief moment of error.
'Imaginary friend.'
'Pretend henchgirl.'
'Shego was—'
Drakken painfully rolled over to his side and watched the cerulean waters of the moat flow lazily into the hole at the wall, where they darkened beneath the rock into an entrancing deep blue before dimming to mulberry, and finally black the further in the small tunnel bad been carved.
'You know why Possible always defeats her. You know why you always come back to this place.'
A tear rolled down Drakken's cheek, and he closed his eyes and finally let the memory he had locked away play in full. From a time long before Possible, before the first lair destruction, and even before Lutz.
"I still say it's a stupid idea," the green-skinned woman said with a shrug.
"It's an evil lair! It needs an aesthetic," Drakken insisted, gesturing broadly to the blueprints he'd drawn spread out atop the cardboard moving box.
"But a moat... Who will even take you seriously?"
"Ngh! That's enough Shego, now will you do this or do I have to hire villain contractors? I'd like to keep my new lair secret for at least a little while."
The raven-haired woman ignited the alien glow in her hands, and Drakken grinned covetously upon seeing her power again.
"Fine, fine... But I warn you, this will take awhile."
Drakken smirked and stepped nearer to kiss her cheek.
"Thank you."
Drakken remembered watching for at least an hour before getting bored as she had meticulously carved out the tunnels and paths where the moat would flow in what was quickly becoming his favorite lair. The natural spring that would feed them with its cool, crystalline waters simply screamed to be utilized in such a classically creepy theme, and his design was flawless.
At least, that was what he had thought until he heard the distant scream.
Drakken's eyes remained fixed on the water vanishing into the tunnel in the lair wall. The memory played in slow motion as tears fell down his face and soaked into the dirty bedding.
His echoing steps as he darted through corridors, shouting her name.
The too-heavy rush of water that finally guided him toward a lower level.
The sight of the partially collapsed ceiling and wall where water now sprayed outward—a structural issue of the cave he had failed to account for in his designs.
And the red staining of the waters around the crumpled green and black figure in the rubble. Most prominent was the massive stalactite, no longer on the ceiling, but standing upright below where it should not be.
Drakken rolled away from the sight of the moat and wiped his face before closing his eyes so tightly it was painful, willing himself to see only blackness and not the memory that he had long-banished in favor of madness, if only to forget.
But the madness, at last, had become too much. He swallowed the bile that rose in his throat and took several shuddering breaths as the choice had been ripped away from him.
"I'm sorry...Shego. I'm sorry!"
He wept into the pillows, uncaring if his cries could be heard by the men in the other room.
He hadn't grieved back then, too horrified at what had happened, at what had been his fault. He had only tried to forget ever since, but she was in his thoughts, day and night. The only way to cope had been to act as if she was still with him and pretend that he hadn't been responsible for the death of the most important person in his life.
Pretend that he wasn't alone.
He didn't know how long he cried, but it was long enough that the blackness sunk in deeper around him. There was no lair. There was no evil scheme. There was barely a him anymore.
And there was no Shego.
He lifted his face from the pillow when breathing became impossible and gasped for air. Words spilled from his lips unbidden, and he barely heard them for the pain ripping at his heart.
"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I never...meant to. I would never...have done anything, anything to hurt you! Please...please forgive me. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!"
Wordless sobs followed as he emptied himself of the torment he'd kept secret for years, until his chest hurt so much that he couldn't cry anymore. He slowly blinked his eyes open into the dim lighting of the room, and the sound of the moat flowing returned to him as his sniffling began to subside.
More than that, the conversation he'd carried on in his head since it happened was fading away, and with it the madness that he had been calling an anchor to sanity. His mind, at last, was silent.
He was alone.
"I miss you..."
A knock at the door startled him, and he hurriedly wiped his face again with his sheets as he sat upright on the bed.
"Come in?"
The door slid open to reveal the cautious face of Lutz peering in from around the frame.
"Hey...Boss?"
Drakken sighed and hoped he didn't look as horrible as he felt. At least he knew his longest-employed henchman wasn't a gossip.
"Yes? What is it?"
"I, uh...I brought you some chocolate milk," the nervous man said, a small plate with a steaming mug appearing in his hands from behind the frame as well.
"Oh." Drakken's brow rose in surprise. "...Thank you."
With that permission given, the middle-aged man's nerves eased with a slight smile and he stepped through the door. But almost immediately he paused, his mouth forming an 'O' as he stared away into the room.
"Whoa, Boss... How'd you do that?"
Drakken's brow twisted in confusion, and he leaned forward to follow the henchman's gaze to the floor.
His eyes widened. The moat he had insisted upon, the very thing that had been the ruin of his life, had changed. Its ordinarily deep blue waters now glowed a bright chartreuse, and not from any artificial source that he could see.
"Now that's really creepy," Lutz said as he crossed the room and set the hot chocolate down on the broad headboard. "If you'd done it like that from the beginning it might have even scared off those teens."
Drakken heard the man's words, but he was transfixed by the glowing waters. It almost seemed as if a power rose out of the moat now along with the illumination.
"Well...ah. We're starting to clean things up...again. Good night, Dr. Drakken," Lutz said, a tinge of worry in his voice as he turned to depart.
The door slid closed, and again all was quiet but for the soft sound of the waters flowing. But now...
'Shego...?'
The door slid open again, and Drakken gasped and turned to the astonished face of not just Lutz, but the other three henchmen crowding behind him.
"It's through the whole lair, Boss! How'd you do it?"
Drakken looked back at their astonished faces, blinking in shock. He slowly turned back to the moat and searched the waters, their new color and glow...too familiar.
The echo of a silvery laugh...
"Boss? You okay?"
"I... I..."
'You're not alone...'
Drakken blinked and shook his head, certain it was the madness returning. It was impossible. That glow had been extinguished.
But he could still hear the faint voice, painfully familiar. And the waters were still green.
He swallowed slowly as his heart pounded hard against his chest. And for the first moment in all the years of agony...he felt the faintest tendrils of hope.
"Boss?"
Drakken looked back to see that only Lutz remained in the doorway, the others having either lost interest or perhaps been frightened away by what he knew had been terrifying behavior on his part for too long. He licked his lips which had gone dry, and tried to calm the racing of his heart.
"Lutz... Lutz. I... M-Meet me in the den, in just a minute. I...want to tell you about someth—"
A long-lost familiar warmth reached into his chest then, the absence of which he'd missed so much it was all he could do to hold his tears at bay. The lump in his throat grew.
"Boss?"
"About...someone."
"Oh...okay. Don't forget your hot chocolate," Lutz said with a nod, and then turned to leave.
The door slid closed and left Drakken in silence again but for the flowing of the moat. After a moment, he rose to his feet and padded to the water's edge and looked down into the glowing green stream. A pain-filled sigh escaped his lips.
'I'm so sorry, Shego. I'm so sorry.'
The silence wasn't so empty anymore as Drakken stared at the waters and hoped for more. But finally, he cinched his robe tighter and moved to get the cocoa moo. It was long past time he had possibly the bravest conversation of his life.
He sipped from the cup and started for the door, turning one last time to look at the mysterious green glow his bedroom was now cast in. Perhaps it meant...that she had forgiven him. And maybe, just maybe...he could move on.
He selfishly hoped it would remain.
He stared longingly at the bright green glow, and then suddenly felt an answer echo from the waters and pierce his soul. He wiped a stray tear from his cheek.
'Dr. D., you'll never be alone.'
