okay, so in a rare moment for me, there's a discourse thing i want to bring up, and that thing is. okay. so on iskall's stream there's this thing that can happen where someone brings up a criticism of his content or vault hunters. frequently it's self-evidently wrong, but sometimes it's not. and then iskall spends the next thirty minutes shadowboxing this guy, explaining himself, and completely derailed. and this is an iskall trait we all know and sigh bemusedly about, because he cares about the community and wants people to understand his intentions! he wants the community to understand his decisions!
however, it's not the community as a whole he's fighting; he is in fact, arguing with One Guy, who often doesn't represent the wider community, and who normally won't have their mind changed. hell, sometimes it's believable that they're satisfied having just managed to upset iskall, and they'll leave, no change to their mind, perfectly pleased that iskall's responding at all (that's what i firmly believe the people who poke at the 'you don't upload enough and that means you're falling off and a bad person' wound are trying to do, at least).
in the vault hunters community, we refer to this as iskall getting One Guyed, and it's typically viewed as bad, because it ends up focusing an entire moment on a single guy's negative opinion as opposed to on the larger picture. and it's an understandable thing to have happen! but it's frustrating to watch from the outside.
and so now i am looking at that cat poll. and the way everyone is still shadowboxing someone who has since apologized. and the way i would have never ever known about any of the negative comments about jellie if it weren't for fellow mcyt fans constantly putting them on my dash to dunk on them. and it's like. if you look through the notes most of them are just... normal? it's only a tiny few of people (and the pollrunner, who has since apologized) who were being dicks. it's a very, very ignorable demographic.
but. well. there was One Guy. and we had to correct them.
and folks, i don't know how to say that i almost never see "lol mcyt is cringe" type comments unless one of you puts it on my dash. both because i don't go looking through the notes of things that are likely to have them or go looking for reasons to be upset and because it's just... not that common! very frequently these days it is, in fact, One Guy!
i have almost never seen that poll on my dash without at least one instance of the One Guy. instead of being for fun, it's mostly become about explaining ourselves to someone who will not listen and will not change their minds, and treating this as a the whole of the Other Side of that poll, when most people are being... fine. they're fine! the majority of the people voting for the other side are doing it for perfectly normal reasons that don't require fighting about.
and man. let me tell you. after spending as long as i have watching vault hunters development? it can be just as frustrating to watch a fandom get One Guyed as it is to watch iskall.

Something that I keep thinking about that I've not seen be mentioned in the DP fandom is the fact that Dani/Elle had brothers before Danny.
Angst ahead (I'm in an angsty mood lol)
I don't know if I've just missed it or not, but I just keep thinking about how for a while, it was just Elle and the other clones. That with Vlad being Vlad they probably really only had each other. And Elle being stable while the others weren't implies that she was the youngest of them all.
Did the others look after her? Did they play with her and try and teach her ghost stuff even though they weren't very good at it? Did she curl up with the big Frankenstein Clone to sleep at night, did the Skeleton Clone start wearing the bed sheet originally because he was worried about scaring his little sister? Did the Gooey Clone that could change sized play hide and seek with her to keep her entertained?
There's a level of implication that she didn't know that the other Clones were actually gone gone after they fought Danny when he told her that he wouldn't fight her because when he did fight the clones they destabilized. And I can't help but think it's something that would haunt her, realizing that not only were her brothers were gone, but she helped destroy one of them.
I don't know I just feel like it's a piece of Elle's backstory that isn't brought up, both for family fluffy and angst purposes.
Gimme some fics of Elle and Danny talking about her brothers, their shared grief and regret over everything. Danny trying to help make it up to her or Elle admitting that as much as she loves Danny she still sometimes finds herself looking at him and knowing that he's the one that killed her brothers, even though he didn't mean to.
Give me Elle making graves for her brothers and mourning them with her new family, never forgetting them but slowly learning how to accept their deaths. Or of her going full Tim Drake and trying to clone them to get them back even though she knows it won't be the same (give me a DP x DC crossover with her & Tim feeding off each others grief spirals and helping each other in their unhealthy cloning coping methods or Elle stepping in to stop Tim because she's been there and done that and knows it doesn't do anything but prolong the pain).
Or something happy! Elle goes off and explores the multiverse and discovers worlds were her brothers lived! Or where she was the one that didn't make it in their world but they did and she's able to stabilize them and bring them home! Or an AU where the clones live and run off with Elle to see the world and she comes back to Amity Park sooner because while she's getting weaker her brothers are fully on the verge of destabilizing and she needs Danny's help to save them!
I just have a lot of thoughts on the untapped potential of the other clones and Elle's relationships to them.

But He's Married (3/4)
Pairing: Bucky Barnes
Fandoms: Marvel, MCU
Summary: "Bucky, who did this to you?"
Warnings: Cursing, violence, talk of smut, abuse
1/2/3/4
Tumblr media
"Bucky, who did this to you?" You didn't know why you asked. It was obvious. "Was it her? Was it Shannon?"
He was embarrassed as he grabbed his shirt off the floor and held it over his chest. He wouldn't look you in the eye. "She hits me sometimes when I'm not listening to her. She punches really hard. And...?"
"And...?" Your heart was pounding in your ears.
"And...When she guilts me into having sex with her...she...she, uh..." Evidently not being able to find the words, Bucky just turned around to reveal red and violent scratches all up and down and across his back.
You gasped his name as you carefully ran your fingers over a couple of the wounds. Tears pricked your eyes.
He turned back around to face you. "I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have let her done this. But I didn't know how--"
You gently pulled him in to kiss you. Your hands were gently placed on the sides of his neck.
Bucky eased and kissed you back. His arms circled around you again. One of his hands ran through your hair.
You thought you'd be able to let go of what you'd just learned, at least for the moment, but you proved yourself wrong when you parted from Bucky and exhaled through your nose. You could feel rage bubbling within you. "I could kill her."
"Huh?" Bucky clearly didn't expect that.
"For hurting you. I could-I could...Ugh!" You jumped off the washing machine, surprising Bucky.
He took a step back, and stared at you, wide-eyed. "Y/n! I-I'm sorry. Maybe I--"
"No, Buck. Please don't apologize anymore. None of this is your fault. It's all that bit--" You stopped yourself. "--Shannon's." Then, you realized what you needed to do. "You know what--?" You picked up your basket, and headed for the door.
Panic struck Bucky's voice. "Where are you going?!"
"Where do you think?" you returned angrily.
Before you knew it, you were banging on Bucky and Shannon's apartment door. The villain in question answered quickly. You could have sworn you could caught her vein if it popped out her head any farther.
"What the hell are are you doing at my and James' home?!"
You didn't think twice. "He likes to be called Bucky, and I'll tell you what he doesn't like: being abused by some person like you!"
"Abused?" Bucky was alarmed. "Hey, no one said abused!"
Shannon looked beyond offended. She was enraged. She didn't slap you, no, she just punched you right in the face.
"Shannon!" Bucky called out.
You dropped the basket you were holding out of shock, and grabbed your nose. "That's it--" you called out before charging into the apartment and tackling Shannon to the ground. You managed to punch her five times before Bucky pulled you off her.
"He's mine now, bitch!" you called as Bucky pulled you away. "I'll treat him better than you ever dreamed!"

Hey do you have any platonic Headcanons for Reiner,Mikasa, and Armin?
a/n: RAGHHH IM SO SORRY I DIDNT SEE THE REQUEST EARLIER!!!! I DIDNT GET A NOTIF— anyways brother elliot shall provide once more >:) (this is like season 1-2 so no spoilers).
pairing: Reiner x gn!reader ; Mikasa x gn!reader ; Armin x gn!reader.
fandom: AOT (Attack on Titan).
genre: Fluff, headcanons.
! WARNING ! : N/A. (it's sfw pookies)
─────────────────────────────
Reiner Braun.
Man is FLEXING his ass off when you're around.
Anything he thinks you might like? He's showing it off. Whether it be leadership skills (which he barely has) or muscles (okay he does have those), HE'S SHOWING OFF.
He likes to get your attention through random stuff such as constant poking or annoying you.
Since you're close to Reiner, he talks a lot about you to his friends Annie and Bertholdt.
Bertie likes you, although Annie keeps her distance. It's not that she doesn't like you, it's just that she's a loner and wants to keep it that way.
He probably follows you around during missions to make sure you're safe.
He's like a golden retriever off the field, but on the field, he's the most protective mf you can ever meet.
The second a titan reaches out to grab you, boom, he's slicing the titan's hand off.
If the mission proves to be easy with few dangers nearby, you and him have little contest like 'who kills more titans' and such.
He doesn't want to admit it, but he lets you win almost every time, blaming it on his gear for being this rusty.
You usually stay up past your curfew and watch the stars.
During this time you don't talk a lot, merely enjoying eachothers presence.
He's usually acting like an older brother, but sometimes you have to be the mature one and step in between fights he's about to start (somebody looked at you wrong).
Super supportive, literally the main cheerleader as you kick somebody's ass during training.
You and him have sparring sessions and he teaches you useful information about hand-to-hand combat!
He'd be a good teacher if he wouldn't be teasing you so much.
"Look at you, you're so fragile, you could never take me down!" were his last words before you kicked his ass.
He was shocked, he didn't expect you to ACTUALLY win the fight.
Nevertheless he's proud of you >:)
Mikasa Ackerman.
She firstly heard about you through Armin, telling her and Eren about how he made a new friend.
She was skeptical at first, thinking you were actually someone mean who just tried to get advantage of her blond friend.
But upon meeting you, she quickly changed her mind.
Mikasa is usually quiet and is always following Eren around, so the two of you don't really get some time alone.
But Armin told you she considers you a good friend of hers!
You're a feisty fellow, so she has to make sure you don't get in trouble aswell (as if she needed another Eren to take care of).
Being the mother friend of the group, she has to make sure nobody gets hurt, so she keeps you, Armin and Eren close when in missions.
Always on alert, she's ready to lash out at anyone who does you wrong.
One time a rookie spoke lowly of you behind your back. Mikasa found out, said she was going to take care of it, and you never saw that rookie again.
It's scary what she's willing to do to protect her loved ones, but it only makes you realize she is a good person deep down.
Honestly you're closer to Armin than her, but she doesn't mind that, since it gives her and Eren some alone time (nothing happens in this time, but she likes it when it's just her and Eren hanging around).
Not really good with praises, but will congratulate you after missions, saying you did a good job before walking away.
Armin Arlert.
If you're close to him, you're ultimately close to Eren and Mikasa too.
He likes to talk to you about facts he's learned from books and he's genuinely happy you listen to him (unlike a certain SOMEONE who has brown hair and teal eyes glares at Eren).
You had to rescue him a couple times from bullies. Because of that, you tried to teach him how to defend himself, although he believed this wasn't the right way.
He probably shows off every new item he found. It's mainly cool rocks or shards of glass bottles, but the way he's presenting them makes the trinkets look like some ancient relics.
He is a great listener and offers good advice where he can.
Most of the time he's shy so you have to speak up for him, he's really thankful you do that for him.
Armin's parents like you a lot, especially since you help out Armin so much. They tell you stuff about Armin which makes him embarrassed and blush.
You know the song 'To the Bone' about Undertale?
Well there's this one part saying "I am the Mastermind, he's my accomplice!"
Yeah that's Armin, and you're "You're still alive because I made a promise."
You guys are a great duo, fighting off titans together (although you end up eliminating most of them since Armin is a bit rusty on his skills, he's learning tho!) during missions and such.
He probably tells you all about the wonders of the ocean he's learned from his little book, it gets you as excited as him and it makes him feel as if he doesn't just let the information fall on deaf ears.
He thinks you're a strong, independent person and admires you for that.
He's the orange cat friend and you're the doberman friend. You can't convince me otherwise.

Hii I'm not sure if ur taking requests rn but if u are could u do Levi or Eren when they argue with they're s/o
sorry if it doesn't make sense
When You Argue With Them
Tumblr media
It does make sense, don’t worry! Sorry it took me so long.
Fandom: Attack On Titan
Featuring: Eren, Levi, Zeke
Tumblr media
EREN JAEGER
Now, Eren is a stubborn guy. He likes to be right, and most of the time, he genuinely believes he is. His pride only makes this slightly worse, an though he tries to be better, especially because of you, change takes time. He hates arguing with you, but it's really not that uncommon as he is aware that his personality makes it hard not to argue sometimes, still, he hates hurting you.
As I said, he's gotten considerably better at thinking before speaking when he starts to get irritated during an argument, always doing his best to avoid saying something he'll regret.
But on those unfortunate moments when he does fuck up, he'll instantly beat himself up mentally.
Especially if whatever he said ended up making you cry.
He'll immediately apologize, Eren doesn't really feel deserving of you, and those things only make him feel worse, like he's wasting your time by being with you.
And though is rare now, there are arguments where it'll take longer for him to cool down and recognize his mistakes.
But even then, while it might take longer for him to apologize, he'll never go to bed if you are mad at him. His nights are meant to be spent with you, there is not any other way.
It happened once at the beginning of your relationship, and he hated every single second of it. Never again.
He's learnt to apologize first, by the way, before you, he would NEVER.
And if you were in the wrong or just felt the need to apologize to him, he'll accept the apology gladly, being happy that you both can just go back to normal.
Tumblr media
LEVI ACKERMAN
Now, Levi is no little kid, nor any sort of manchild. He doesn't see the point in wasting time arguing with the one he loves and is usually very matture at handling these things, however, the fact that he has no interest in arguing, can make it seem like he doesn't care whenever you are mad at him for something, which will sometimes only irritate you more, as if he didn't take you seriously.
As I said, he is a matture guy. If you talk to him about something that made you mad, he'll listen, and if he realizes that it actually was on him, he'll immediately apologize and ACTUALLY change.
However, sometimes, he asseses the situation and realizes that you might not be right, and he'll explain so to you. If you are unable to recognize your own wrongs, he'll just ignore your complaints, which is frustrating to you.
Still, if any of this upsets you enough as to make you cry, he'll instantly feel furious at himself.
He just really feels like he sometimes doesn't know how to interact with people, like he can't form bonds.
And you are one of the very few individuals with whom he feels like he is where he should. So when he hurts you, it feels like a step back, or as if maybe he had been lying to himself and he can't actually interact with you either without messing up like he does with most people.
And that sucks, he doesn't want to be the reason why you are hurting.
Overall, he will usually apologize sincerly, he isn't the type that would risk losing you because of his pride.
Tumblr media
ZEKE JAEGER
He can be so mature sometimes, and such a damn manchild some other times... He doen't like to be told that he's wrong. He knows it most times, but has a hard time admitting to it. Zeke holds a lot of pride. He loves you, and does try to be a better man to you, but much like his brother, sometimes he's too stubborn to understand he fucked up soon enough.
He believes he really does know what's best for you, and though he does sees you as an equal, he acts as if he thought he was smarter or more capable than you sometimes.
This becomes even more evident if you are younger than him.
If you point it out, he'll deny it to the bitter end, and he truly doesn't see his own behaviour like that.
If his cynism goes far enough to make you cry, though... He'll feel really bad. Despite everything, he is in love with you. He doesn't want anyone to hurt you, much less himself.
Even if he is unable to actually comprehend how he fucked up, he knows he did.
He is able to apologize, but most of the time, his way to do it is just pretending it never happened, getting you a gift, or just approaching you to hug and kiss you.
Sometimes he doesn't want to bother you any further, so he'll avoid you, he misses you, but believes he's doing you a favor by removing himself from your presence.
Despite the way his attitude comes across, he knows you are way better than him, and does puts you before him all the time. He's aware he's emotionally difficult and cannot, for the life of him, understand why you love him so much.
But rest assured, he loves you even more.

you're so right. i will never understand the hold rockstar eddie has on ppl. his character immediately becomes insufferable if he's super famous and successful, esp in no upside down aus where he never experiences some form of ego death/being forced to reassess his own bullshit. not to mention he is just not someone who would become uber famous like he does not have the personality to either pull it off or handle it well if he miraculously did imo. steve really screams child star to me tho in an au. plus his entire character arc kind of speaks to him being able to handle fame (ie the fact that steve is a v reflective, adaptive character that was capable of actually changing and improving his behavior even w/o knowing about the upside down originally) and knowing/learning who he should be surrounding himself w. like i firmly believe steve could actually handle being famous in a way eddie could not.
I do enjoy rockstar eddie to a point? it depends I think. Rockstar/musician aus are popular in fandoms of all sorts an I like them sorta...hit or miss? haha.
But you're right that it's become...idk over saturated? And yeah absolutely Eddie's ego death and the shattering of the Munson Docterine is kind of pivotal for his character growth. Like I know the duffers don't think Eddie's problem is that he's stuck in highschool clique mode (They seem to think his flaw is that he's a coward...which is a different meta but his reactions are reasonable to the situations he's thrown in), because they only think "jocks" are the problem there, but he is. Him realizing that actually Steve is pretty cool is the stepping stone to him not hating jocks on principal, and broadening and nuancing his view of people outside his assumptions on who are "Proper" nerds. No- upside down aus, regardless of any other trope in them, often fall flat for me in that aspect, yet always make sure to remind us Steve was a bit of a stuck up dick in highschool (until the beginning of grade 11) and it's tiring to nt see Eddie allowed to be wrong and have that moment of self-betterment.
And yeah, I can maybe see eddie becoming semi-famous session musician (not a musician that is a session musician AND recording/performing artist by themself like Glen Campbell or Marvin Gaye) through a series of events like. Playing one of his hyper specific songs at a small gig, someone in desperate need of a guitarist is there and sees he is incredibly talented as a guitarist, asks him to help as a session musician in like two days, he plays, someone at the studio is like hey. wanna be on-call for us? and eddies like sure. ok. So sometimes he's on hit records but they aren't his. royalties are decent from the amount of work he's done. He's a pinch hitter guitarist, and he's good, so he gets a rep in the industry for that. He doesn't seem like the kind of person that could thrive in the high pressure, has major deadlines, environment that being a famous musician woudl be. I mean a lot of rockstars aren't either and it's not healthy for them? I can see Eddie crashing and burning, which I know a lot of fics cover but I also find it super depressing haha. He would probably be too standoffish and anti-authority and possibly refuse outside input for stuff, so he'd be off putting in the industry. not that musicians are always pleasant to work with but i think you get it.
Child star Steve would be so neat tbh. Look I love famous athlete Steve. but also the allure of him being famous young... Maybe as a little piano prodigy? (I love piano prodigy steve hehe) or an actor? like canon era he could have been a Mousketeer! Maybe he did a couple movies (what if he was in a few cult-classic scifi movies...that the party just so happen to love....but don't pay attention to the name of the child actor in...or maybe he used a stage name?) And then him fading away and living his life a little bit, before he decides to come back into the limelight?
I think that often we forget that Steve's "come-to-jesus" moment happened without the upside down. He talked shit, got hit, and then decided that he owed Jonathan (and Nancy) an apology. No one made him help clean up the grafitti! He had no idea there were monsters he just had a shit 48 hours where he went off the handle and then decided he had been an ass and to fix himself. When he was 16! He'd have made these changes to himself without the Upsidedown. Somehow the party knew his full name, and I love the hc that he won a major game/championship for Hawkins as a junior/sophomore so was a minor town celebrity. These lend to Steve being able to handle the pressure without too major a fallout or a long-term downward spiral of self destruction.
Except (okay operating as like a post-canon thing, because I love canon-divergent aus more than no-upside down aus but could still work?) now he's battle scarred and obviously not the rosy-cheeked boy he was when he was a tween. I'm thinking maybe he goes back in '89? give some time to heal from the upside down and Robin is moving for Uni, he's obviously going with her, so he figures acting would beat dead-end minimum wage jobs. Or at least spice things up in between shifts. Maybe he starts with theatre, and decides to see if there's some screen auditions he could do. Maybe he still has people in the industry who remember working with him (he's a good team player and a natural leader) and they help in slip back in. He does some bit parts, a few semi-recurring characters. Maybe he's even on an episode of Law and Order, and people go hey! That guy who's crying over his dead girlfriend (he's a red herring) is the kid from that 70's scifi movie!
Eventually someone actually offers him a role without him auditioning, and it's a bigger part, a side character but one with lines and even a semi decent arc in a b-list movie. he's a good fit. Charming and handsome, plus there are some intense scenes and on set Steve's proved himself capable of handling most things and supportive of coworkers (actors and crew alike.) Except there's a shirtless scene. While his scarring isn't extensive, it's definitely noticeable and not as easy to cover up as the faint discolouration around his neck. it's hard to explain, and usually movies want flawless skin. He tells them this. They still want him.
So he takes the role. And he has a blast on set. He loves working as a team, and even though days are long, he feels everything sort of...coming together. A feeling that this is what he wants to do. that he was right to get back into acting even though he started so young because of his parents.
He makes lasting friendships with nearly everyone he meets on the set. There's a few child actors, and he tries to give them tips and pointers, and be a role model or support for them. he knows what it's like to be little and surrounded by adults a lot of the time, and feeling pressure to be perfect. (They think he's actually the coolest, even if he's also kinda a doofus.) (there's probably a scene where he picks up on of the kids, and then the rest of them on set want piggy back rides too...)
It's considered his comeback role, despite being a few years after he actually came back. The pressures of fame come back again, but he's older now, and he's killed monsters. He has Robin beside him. A few paps don't scare him. Everything he has to hide (besides his bisexuality...and maybe his shitty relationship with his parents) is covered up by the government anyways. He gets bigger parts, and gets an even bigger rep for being a delightful (if viciously sarcastic) and supportive co-worker, especially if there's kids on set. (child stars of the nineties will look back on working with steve and think he was one of the few adults to get it. to understand how big your emotions are as a kid and how most grown ups [often even/especially their parents] didn't let them actually feel what the were feeling, instead wanting them to be acting all the time, instead of only in front of the camera. How he told them to never let anyone do anything they weren't comfortable with, no matter who it was. How he'd stick up for them, no matter what, and would ask how they were doing throughout shooting. They'll look back on being on set with Steve and remember how even if he called them little shits when they tried to prank him or were goofing off, he said it with a wink and a smile.)
I'd say, (please forgive me) he sort of becomes a (90's era) Tom Cruise kind of actor (before he went on oprah and went viral for jumping on the couch and then only did action movies after that) (also steve doesn't become the face of a cult) Like he does action flicks, but can definitely pull his weight as a dramatic actor. (I realize that I already have a movie star steve au but thats a different era I can have overlapping headcanons for the aus!!) His cute heart-shaped smile and amazing hair entrances audiences. He can make emphatic speeches about justice and also carry at least two children out of a burning building. He has range.
idk steve going from child actor to highschool athlete to monster killer to broke thespian to movie star again entices me!!!

I really feel like the fandom built around HH and HB really needs to stop performing mental gymnastics to justify why they like HH and HB and pretty much just come out and say they like and move on.
Because at the end of the day we all can see what's wrong with the show and its characters and its songs. It doesn't take an ivy league genius to notice the problems. But the fans insistence that HB is a perfect show and going so far to make some kind of justification for why they think the show is perfect despite the fact that either the justifications are not present or made up in their minds and it really comes off like the fans are trying to justify to themselves why they think HB is a perfect show. If the show is as great as the fans claim it to be, then the show should be able to stand on its own without the need for the fans to attack anyone who doesn't think it's a masterpiece.
Sometimes you just got to take a step back and a deep breath and realize that you can like something regardless of if people think it's good or bad. That is something the fandom really needs to take to heart because attacking and stalking people are not going to make them change their minds.
Exactly. I think a lot of people need to realize that it's okay to like HH/HB if it's not great, and yes, to like it even if Vivzie is the biggest pile of ass to ever live.
You can still draw fanart of Angel Dust. It's fine.

A Reflection on Quality vs. Quantity in Writing (as per some witnessed Tiktok and other posts)
I’m back again with a long post about quality vs word count quantity.
I think I’ve touched on this before and only recently realized what that may have come across as.
I think I’d like to clarify—just to make sure I was understood and not misinterpreted the first time around.
I’ve had the chance through Tiktok and Tumblr to meet a lot of fanfiction writers or aspiring writers. A version of what I’ve heard of, too many times, is some version of I will never be able to write a story, because I can’t write long ones. This fear of not being able to meet a certain word count often prevents the story from being written at all.
I don’t think word count should be a barrier to starting a story.
I don’t think anyone who’s ever started a long fic has ever thought to themselves, I’m going to write however many thousand words. No one who embarks on a story typically sets out with a specific word count in mind.
It happens, because it’s how the story’s meant to happen, and because that’s what the brain wants, what the characters need for their development.
A compelling story doesn't need to be long. Nor does it have to be short. It simply needs to resonate with its audience, and this can happen regardless of length, because we’re all looking for different things in fandom.
What I am trying to say really is for the writers who aren’t able to, or feel like they will never be able to either finish their stories or write anything bigger than a oneshot, or a small novel-length story: You don’t have to.
What I am trying to say is, people who write long fanfictions are able to take the same characters and explore dozens of emotions, adventures, issues, relationships within one story. Conversely, others can produce multiple shorter works, each focusing on a specific theme.
In the end, we are all doing the same thing, just going about it differently.
The way we think, the way we each explore our own inner turmoil also presents itself differently based on our past, our ability to focus, and what we want from the story we’re writing.
Amélie Nothomb has written 32+ short stories/small novels. Each one is dedicated to a specific genre, a specific topic. That’s where she thrives. And people read her stories. George R. R. Martin, renowned for a single series that interweaves countless topics across the characters' journeys. And people read his stories.
I could go into details about each author but just step into a library or a bookstore and you’ll have every single possible word count for a novel/anthology/series/whatever. They all found their little space on the bookshelves, and they all deserve to be there, and there is not one work that deserves it more than another.
AO3 is a bookshelf.
We are all human, we can’t all work the same way, and long works shouldn’t intimidate you out of writing at all.
This is what I want to say.
If you have something to say, you should write it. Doesn’t matter if it fits in 1K or less. Doesn’t matter if it fits in 900K or more. It’s going to resonate with someone.
No one sets off to resonate with thousands. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, but you can’t work through your turmoil hoping to resonate with people; you must do it because you want to solve it within yourself first. The resonance is a by-product. It cannot be the end goal, only the happy happenstance.
I hope this helps.
If you want to write, write.
If you start something and stop because half-way through, you’ve decided that actually, you’ve worked through it, then isn’t it enough?
You don't owe anyone your writing, just as no one owes you their readership, praise, or positive feedback. These are all wonderful by-products of your work resonating with others, if you're ever so lucky, but it cannot be what you write for.
AO3 is a bookshelf like Mary Poppins’ bag. Ever-extending. There is space for every length, every type, every genre, every fandom, everythingeverythingeverything.
The only thing it doesn’t have space for, is hate.

I wholeheartedly respect your honest answers during that ask game a few days ago when people asked if you all were friends, but it made me realize we really aren’t more than glorified acquaintances, at most, and that makes me sad.
I did answer those as honestly as I could. Anyone who looked at that long list of questions and chose that one to be answered publicly deserved honesty, and I don't make a habit of lying regardless.
However, it's important to note that I defined friendship for myself, and all of my answers were based on that definition. I answered questions like: Do we talk? How well does that person know me? How well do I know them? Would I turn to them in a time of need? Would they turn to me in a time of need? Is our entire relationship on Tumblr? Etc.
Because here's the thing, the word friend gets thrown around a lot. People call their mutuals they've never spoken to friends. People call people they've spoken to for all of five minutes friends. People call people they talked to a few times months ago friends. But if you step back, those aren't true friendships.
Even if you say "Well, online friendships are different." Okay, but not that different. If you think about it in relation to real life, you have acquaintances, friendly acquaintances, casual friends, friends you share this or that hobby with, close friends, best friends, friends that are like family... Like, there's a hierarchy. And it's the same online.
Kayla (@theyarnmaidstale) is one of my closest friends. I went to her wedding, and I trust her with everything. However, we don't talk every day. We don't need to. Nova (@catdadeddie) is another close friend, and I do talk to her every day. To the point where I gotta warn her if I'm gonna be MIA or my silence sets off alarm bells. AJ (@dorkydiaz) is a friend that I'm not as close to, but we built something when I first entered the fandom, and there's a level of trust there from back then that I don't really have with plenty of other people in this fandom. So, even though we don't talk every day, I would still consider them a friend.
And then you have to take into account that it's all about perception. I might consider AJ (sorry babe, I keep using you as an example 😂) a friend, but they might consider me someone they're friendly with. Not quite a friend but not quite an acquaintance. Or maybe something else entirely.
It gets lost in how easily we all openly share affection online, but true friendships online take just as much work as true friendships offline, and just because you aren't someone's closest friend doesn't mean you have no relationship at all. It doesn't mean you aren't friends at all.
Someone may consider you a Tumblr friend, a Discord friend, a Fandom friend, or just a friend. Or maybe something more. It all depends on how they define it. I went with a far more strict definition of friend, so the people who sent me that question generally got the response that we're friend-ly more than actual friends.
But that's not a bad thing. It's basically the same as saying we're casual friends or friendly acquaintances who sometimes chat and could hang out, but we don't know each other that well.
That can change with time and work just like every relationship. I can promise you that I'm pretty easy to befriend. I know that much. In fact, I regularly get told that I have too many friends. I got told that yesterday, actually. asdfasdfasdfa
That's mainly because I'm extroverted and enjoy socializing with people, so if you're someone I know and you want whatever relationship we do have to grow, you're just gonna have to reach out a bit. I rarely reach out to new people. Mainly because I don't really need to, I talk to a lot of people already. But I'm very open to people who reach out to me and wanna talk.
So, if it's something that truly bothers you, I promise it's not that hard to change with a little time and effort.

If you could offer Sam and Colby a single piece of advice what would that advice be?
Similarly if you could put out a piece of advice towards the entire fandom what would it be?
see this question can go in about a 1000 different ways lol do you mean like general life advice or like... advice on their content? bc i'll do both.
content advice: stop listening to the minority of fans for opinions that the majority wouldn't give a shit about. it is becoming more noticeable to me that while snc like ghost hunting still, they feel pigeon-holed or stuck in doing this content. and obviously a lot of ppl like this content, me included. but if they wanted to occasionally do travel vlogging, or like anything that was like 25x25 or really anything else, they should feel comfortable enough to do that. just bc a couple young fans back in the day didn't like that you weren't editing your own content anymore doesn't mean you have to be stuck making content you would like to break away from, even slightly.
obviously you gotta do things that will make you money, but you also have to take some chances every now and then. and you shouldn't feel like you are "stuck" making content when collectively a lot of the fandom would enjoy you doing whatever.
also dear god, please set boundaries with fans. some of these ppl be doing too much and yall don't like to point it out bc it's """"negativity"""". but it ain't gonna go away just bc you pretend it ain't there.
then just some general life advice: stop thinking that emotions can be negative or positive. emotions are just neutral. it's your reaction to an emotion that can be negative or positive. like if you're angry, a positive way to express that emotion would be to go listen to some music that helps you relax or get the anger out. a negative way would be to punch a wall and not express why you're pissed in the first place. this whole thing mostly applies to being emotional or sad, since those emotions seem to be the only ones ppl don't like expressing. if you stop seeing emotions as black or white, it really opens you up in more ways than one.
and then advice for fans.... i have a couple i can think of lol
main one: stop taking the wrong things seriously. like, we should be able to have fun, light-hearted conversations in this fandom, but it really feels like we can't sometimes. not on here; it's mostly every other social media site. prime example - if we are talking about snc's dating life, IT'S NOT THAT SERIOUS. if you feel your blood pressure rise just from thinking about one of them dating someone, maybe take a step back and realize how much this topic doesn't affect you in the slightest. if you feel the deep need to argue with someone just bc their opinion is different than yours (and i mean actual opinions not important, moral standpoints), reel it in.
and second piece of advice: stop taking jokes too far. this fandom has the lovely ability to beat a dead horse, then continue beating it until it becomes a paste, and then eat the paste - bc that's how far they take jokes. yall overstay your welcome with some jokes, especially at the expense of snc, or if i'm being honest, colby. some of you feel like you can joke like this bc you see snc as your friends but reality is THEY DON'T KNOW YOU. you are a random person on the internet saying weirdly mean shit to them and just putting a "lol" at the end of your tweet to make you sound less rude. but it ain't doing shit for you.

Now that the initial excitement of just glimpsing Polin and getting some details about season 3 is over, I'm gonna put some thoughts out into the world. I will preface this by saying I'm generally an optimist, and I try not to take fandoms TOO seriously (been there, bad for mental health, will take a step back from anything if it's taking up too much of my life). I haven't felt this way about a fandom or a ship in a long time, and I've had time to process some thoughts/feelings
What I don't want from Season 3: that weird, alpha male shit book!Colin did (grabbing/bruising Penelope's arm, trying to make her stop Whistledown, his jealousy over her writing that seemed way over the top and completely unsupportive of her, I also think he makes her chug champagne at some point??). Colin only wanting to "rescue" Penelope from these new suitors (I'm truly over men thinking women need to be rescued, even if she tells him she doesn't need rescuing it will really put me off Colin). Penelope accepting a proposal from someone else before Colin tells her he wants her (I want these new guys to have as little to do with their relationship as possible, I hope they exist for comedy purposes only). Penelope still simping over Colin at the beginning (I'm interested to see how they will move the story into the wingman thing, I get why he said what he did and he probably didn't mean anything by it, but I would still be hurt if I was in Penelope's position). Colin also should not "suffer" or "grovel" or any of that (its really not necessary, and really wouldn't add anything to the story)
What I do want from Season 3, unselfishly: Colin realizing very, very slowly that he loves Penelope. Colin genuinely wanting to help Pen and as soon as he realizes that he has feelings for her he wants to court her properly. I only want the first half of the season to focus on her "lessons" and then move on to the serious feelings part (I don't think they would just give out the plot to the entire season, there has to be more to it). I want a sweet love story, I want it to be cute and hot and beautiful, no skimping on the romance between the leads. Penelope apologizing to Colin for the events of S1 and explaining herself (like I get why she did it, but I want a scene where she lays everything out for the audience and Colin/Eloise)
What I want from Season 3 very selfishly: Colin follows Penelope thinking she's running off to have a rendezvous with a suitor but she's really on Whistledown business, cue The Carriage Scene, leading into The Proposal Scene (Prudence filling in for Felicity). I want to see a wedding, and it better be a big 'ol Featherington extravaganza. I want the "Stay" scene, even if it's not at the engagement ball. I want them to have sex before they get married. I want there to be a mirror involved at some point. And I want a masquerade, because goddammit I wanna see some Benophie.
I might edit this later to add more, but right now, this is what I feel. They're my favorite characters because I relate to the both of them the most. Penelope as an invisible wallflower who is just bursting to find her place and say what's on her mind, but doesn't know how. Colin who feels lost and doesn't know what he wants, and sometimes maybe is a lil dumb and misses social cues (I literally didn't know I was on a date with my current boyfriend until he texted me later that he enjoyed our date LMAO). I just love these two so much and I can't help but to take what I'm given and hope they shine.

ship ask meme: IBO ship or five of your choice
hi sorry I know you literally asked this long enough ago that we've started and finished another whole entire gundam show since then but
mika/orga
What made you ship it? I mean I was always compelled by their dynamic from the beginning bc mika is shooting people without hesitation for orga right away but. the moment when I realized how much I shipped it was when mika snaps orga out of his grief from biscuit's death by. picking him up by the collar with one hand and saying that orga needs to pull himself together and tell mika who else to kill. that's romance, to me,
What are your favorite things about the ship? the extremely intense level of mutual trust and devotion and also shared ideology is incredibly compelling to me, is the thing. a gay communist ship for gay communists. constantly thinking abt the bit where mcgillis tries to manipulate mika by implying that he's just going along with what orga is doing instead of doing what he actually wants and mika just completely shuts him down because they Are actually on the same page and they Do want the same things even if mika doesn't usually put his ideology into words the same way. also extremely tasty that for most of the show they're doing an extended gift of the magi thing where mika is turning himself into a weapon for the sake of the new world that orga is trying to build, and orga is trying to build a new world so that mika doesn't have to keep turning himself into a weapon
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? ok. listen. I know that the show did not handle mika's disability particularly well but listen. as a fandom we can and should do better. disabled people can and do have sex, I promise you mika can fuck without being connected to the robot
kudelia/atra
What made you ship it? well you see. sometimes I see a girl blushing and complimenting another girl and I simply think they should kiss (also I went in knowing that they were endgame so. I was primed to read into their interactions)
What are your favorite things about the ship? I like how often they're both like "so we're both in love with mika and also each other" and how they make it clear that they are all in love with each other and want to support and help each other. also I love the stuff (especially in season 1) that was like. kudelia being able to put words to things that she didn't necessarily have firsthand experience with but atra does like. theory gf x praxis gf. kudelia understands the relationship between imperialism and capitalism and atra understands that the first step to getting anything done is to feed people when they are hungry. also their ending is that one poem abt like. the long distance relationship between a city lesbian and a country lesbian (want by joan larkin) and I love that for them. I wish season 2/the fanfiction on ao3 had more abt them leading a revolution together bc I do think both of their perspectives are so important and I want to see them talking abt rhetorical strategies and supply lines while also kissing and making each other soup
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I mean it's femslash I'm sure there's plenty of bad takes out there for me to disagree with. like I have beef with whoever edited the wiki so that atra is listed as kudelia's wife in the family section but not as a love interest. every time either of them express their love for mika they also reaffirm that they love each other in explicitly the same way, it's really not ambiguous
gaelio/mcgillis
What made you ship it? well the vibes were there from the start, even when I was just like "who are these evil bureaucrats" so I always thought they were hooking up. and then we got to the bit where gaelio gets choked out by mika and mcgillis like. strokes his back comfortingly?? and I was like. ah. I see. they are Dating.
What are your favorite things about the ship? I love betrayal <3 I love it when a guy's grand plan involves killing the one person he cares abt and both of them are super normal abt it <3 also I love that gaelio isn't dead and wants revenge and also that ein is involved bc I love mess <3 (edit: I wrote before we finished the show and looking back on this. oof. rip to past me for trying to maintain some sense of detachment and just having fun at the tragic mess. current me is genuinely sad like. I do love the betrayal and that's def in the top 5 things I like abt this ship but the top spot might have to go to that final confrontation they have and specifically the bit where gaelio won't let mcgillis say that he loves him because otherwise gaelio will forgive him because he is still So in love with him and would have done anything for him if mcgillis wasn't um. specifically designed to be a foil for characters whose whole thing is solidarity and reaching out to others, so the point of his character is that he was marginalized and abused in ways that specifically isolated him so that he can't bring himself to trust anyone else and that's his downfall. communism could have saved him and also his relationship with gaelio (somehow. despite gaelio being fundamentally a spoiled rich kid. it's fine they would've worked it out. anyway)
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? who could say what the unpopular opinions are. maybe that gaelio is also definitely dating ein but then again this is a show with canon polyamory so maybe the fandom is also more chill abt that
and for uh. equality I guess. one I don't ship. merribit/orga
Why don’t you ship it? not compelled by the dynamic where most of a woman's screentime is her trying to tell a man that he's doing everything wrong and needs to be more careful. they both deserve better than that and I'm glad the show stopped hinting at the possibility of them getting together
What would have made you like it? see above. what if orga could ever give a speech to try to raise morale so that everyone didn't die without merribit interrupting to tell him how fucked up it is that these kids are fighting. I assure you he knows that it's fucked up, it's his life, he's also a child soldier, does he literally ever look like he's happy abt going into battle. what if actually their relationship were abt her teaching him the value of spreadsheets. that would be romantic to me
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? if I were still a straight girl I would have been obsessed with them in a very projecting way. I would be conceptually So into guy character I love x admin woman
extra bonus now that we're so extremely tieriapilled: lockon/tieria
What made you ship it? the bit where lockon puts his hand on tieria's shoulder and tieria Immediately calms down and smiles at him softly and everyone else on the bridge is like. what the fuck happened while you two were down on earth together. and then every single other time they interact after that
What are your favorite things about the ship? lockon constantly reaffirming tieria's personhood. the "you let that man too deep into your heart" line. the incredible potential of the mirrored character arcs they could've had if lockon hadn't fucking died, because god forbid a gundam show from the 2000s allow a disabled main character to actually live their life as a disabled person, where tieria is learning how to be a person and exploring what she wants her gender to be and coming to terms with no longer being able to do the thing that made her special/effective/valuable and also feeling guilty bc she thinks she cost lockon his eye and that saving her wasn't worth it, and lockon is figuring out how to live his life now that he's gotten his revenge and also coming to terms with no longer being able to do the thing that made him special/effective/valuable, and both of them learning that their worth isn't just in being a good gundam pilot in the specific way that they had previous been good gundam pilots
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? you already know my ten thousand word essay on the various ways tieria is (mis)treated and (mis)characterized but. y'know. fandom stop being shitty abt transfem-coded characters challenge

Empty Futures
AUgust 15 - Time Travel
Fandom: Supernatural
Summary: Monster of the Week shoots s1 Dean into the future. He isn't expecting Sam to be so open to things. And why does he look… like that?
This is just a baby ficlet inspired by chats with @rpsocsandcanonohmy
****
"Oh fu-"
The curse doesn't leave his mouth as Dean Winchester is shoved through the… temporal tear? Or whatever it was. The next thing he knew, he was rising unsteadily to his feet. Where and when was he?
He wandered a bit, realizing he recognized the area. Foresty, but familiar. It felt nostalgic. If this was where he thought, there would be a bunker right… about… there! Bingo!
He unlocked it and stepped in with a sigh. The state of the place seemed to say it was after his time, not before. He wandered briefly before he heard steps coming, quickly, and was met with-
"Sammy?!"
"...Dean??"
It was his baby brother. No mistake, but…
Besides the obvious signs of aging (at least 10 years, and there were hints of gray in his hair and stubble), the first thing that Dean really noticed was the hurt in Sam's eyes. The pain, the sadness, and something more, just as bad, just as heartbreaking to see.
Before Dean could think much more, he was scooped into a bone crushing hug. It was amazing, being held with so much love, but again, heartbreaking. He had no idea what could have happened to make Sam of all people react like this.
"What happened?" He managed to ask as Sammy eased up a little.
"I should be asking you that."
"Time bubble monster or some shit."
"Fair enough. Let's figure out how to get you back, then."
Dean wanted to argue, say he had all the time in the world, that he was here, now, and could take away whatever was causing the hurt in his brother's eyes. But he couldn't. He had a Sammy back in his time that he needed to get back to just as much.
***
The work went surprisingly quickly. Older Sam had an incredible mastery of his researching skills, and so much more knowledge than Dean could ever recall even Dad having. It was amazing to see his little brother so effortlessly finding information, working through ideas and problems each. And to work with him without the usual weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth and all.
He almost didn't want this to end.
Sam wouldn't tell him much of what had happened, and he knew that was for the best, frustrating as it was. He could guess plenty. Like the fact that this Sam had lost his Dean somehow. The way that he looked at Dean, with a misty sort of sadness, like a bad scar that ached on stormy days. The way he was extra touchy-feely in a way past Sam would die before becoming. The way Sam sometimes cried at night when he thought Dean couldn't hear.
Dean wanted to stay. To comfort him and promise that things would be okay. That he'd fix it. Somehow he would survive whatever took this version of himself out. He almost said as much, but decided against it, refusing to hurt Sammy any more than he obviously already had. So he'd be a perfect helper, and try not to forget this later.
***
They were an amazing team, and soon it seemed something had clicked. And he couldn't hold his big question in any longer.
"Sammy," he began, as Sam worked on some hocus pocus to send him home, "am I the reason for all that pain in your eyes? Did I hurt you? Do I hurt you??"
If it was a yes, he'd kill himself before making his version of Sam go through it. He'd do anything to take that haunting sadness away.
For his part, Sam looked up, expression unreadable.
"No," he said at last. "It's just time. We went through a lot. Both of us."
"And how long ago did future-me die?"
Sam gulped hard, and Dean wished he hadn't asked. Clearly it hadn't been long enough to stop hurting so badly Sam got teary about it.
"Sorry, Sammy. You don't have to answer. I shouldn't have brought it up. I'm sorry," he mumbled, grasping his baby brother and holding him tight.
"I'll make it right," he vowed, "whatever it takes. I… I'll fix it. Just you wait."
Sam squeezed back tightly.
"That's nice to say, Dean. But you're gonna be busy. I know I don't act like it right now, but… past me is going to need his big brother. Don't… don't change. Just be there."
"Always," Dean said.
"Good. Now you need to go back. I don't think much time should have passed, if anything."
A big rip opened up, looking exactly like what had brought him here. Dean took a deep breath, hugged Sammy again, and stepped through.
He'd do better.
The next time he saw that Sammy, and he swore to himself he would, there wouldn't be any of that hurt. His Sammy would be happy. Even if he had to do it all over by the time he got there.

💎why is writing important to you?
🧿what steps do you take to not take things personally if a fic doesn't do well, or if your writing/posting/sharing experience isn't going how you'd like it to?
🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing
💎why is writing important to you?
I mean it's a creative outlet, of course. And I am a person who needs one. I went to school for fine arts (painting and print making) and that was fun but I never had any real drive to do it specifically, i was just good (for a teenager) at it and I liked doing *something* creative. Its also sort of a focal point for my indecisive energy. I have not-very-good time management and executive function skills. Sometimes "Open up a word doc and write a fucking paragraph, jackass!" is enough to switch me into productivity.
Besides that, I just feel kind of good at it? and I find it satisfying to "succeed" at it. And it surprised me to be kind of good at it, and it still surprises me and excites me. Also it feels good to be on the creating side of a fandom after spending like two decades entirely on the consuming side. Like giving back to the ecosystem or something lol.
🧿what steps do you take to not take things personally if a fic doesn't do well, or if your writing/posting/sharing experience isn't going how you'd like it to?
Oh god this is such a hard question!
Im gonna be completely honest there is like a 24-48 hour period after I post something new where I am only functioning as like half a human being because my mind is on How Is This Fic Doing. Usually when I post something I convince myself it is Bad Actually and people will hate it, and I'm just refreshing and refreshing waiting for somebody to tell me they didn't hate it.
Im lucky because i generally get a good amount of engagement on the things I write, so Ive never had anything flop and like destroy my morale. But some things do better than others, and the thing I usually tell myself if something doesnt hit the way I maybe hoped it would is, like, hey, the people who liked it liked it! And probably some other people liked it too and just didnt have the energy to comment. (i personally find commenting on fics really stressful and hard, i try to do it often because i know how good it feels to get a comment but i totally understand that sometimes it feels hard to do!) And also, like, nobody owes me anything! I volunteered for this, any feedback I get is a bonus!
But like, sometimes something that I wrote quickly, or didn't put too much thought into or whatever will do dramatically better than something that was like Very Important To Me in whatever way, and that drives me a little crazy, even when I can see why that's probably the case and even though I'm not upset that the lesser thing is being enjoyed, im just like... i wish you liked the other thing better 😂
I dont know if this actually answered the question! Basically I am as insecure about this stuff as anybody else on here, probably more than many.
🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing
Giving myself two compliments in one day is a lot. Um. Okay. I think something I'm good at is establishing the more complicated feelings underneath the "we're in love and haven't realized it yet" part. The different amounts and ways they know each other in each story, the ways they like each other and the ways they frustrate each other. I think I give a good foundation for the inevitable romance.
Thank youuuu!!! ❤️️❤️️❤️️

I just wanted to say thank you for all your writing and analysis on Izzy and the Blackhands dynamic. I just found your blog but I've been reading through posts and it's just been so great and helpful to read. Every character is going to sit differently with people depending on so many things. The whole "ack this character is reminding me of something toxic I have experienced and I shall now put any disparaging feelings from this media onto this character" has been placed quite often on Izzy in this fandom, but from my first watch (and strengthening upon rewatching) those feelings for me went right on Ed (Not taking responsibility, out of control, etc. Which yeah we wouldn't want to watch a show with a perfect lead who doesn't have to grow. I'm here for the journey but it does give me gnarly feelings!) Izzy has become a comfort character for me (haha, oh dear) and with most scenarios in the show, I see Ed falling off the edge of the earth and Izzy going to the end of the world to bring him back... then being demonized for it. Anyway, I probably don't have to over explain. Your deep dives are magnificent. I'm a fandom lurker and I'm mostly fine taking my perspective from media and being groovy with however the fandom wants to roll with things, but as it is for many people, OFMD just hits deeper and a bit more intimate so your writing has really been refreshing and I just wanted to say thanks for that. -Finch
General fandoms, especially those with a large portion that ascribe to purity culture etc, find it much easier to enjoy something if they boil it down in a way they can take in small bites. Eg: Izzy Bad. If they don't do that, they have to admit that Edward is a really morally grey character who needs a lot of growth to be healthy to himself and those around him, and that it's okay to still love him. It doesn't make them a bad person.
Instead of doing that introspection and acknowledging those things, they hone in on someone annoying (Izzy's voice isn't exactly standard, so that's one thing they can start with, he's a bit of a dick, rough around the edges, his accent is northern which is already looked down on and not often represented, etc etc) and heap all of the bad feelings on him. He becomes a vessel for their wrath so they can love the other characters in peace, without having to (haha, considering this is what they tell us to do) think critically about what they enjoy.
It's shitty and toxic and if I can help even one person with my metas and analysis etc then I've achieved something great, because I know what it's like to step into a fandom and get bombarded with nothing but hate for a character you don't think is all that bad really and struggle to find anything refuting those accusations of toxicity, abuse, homophobia, racism, whatever the fuck else they decide to throw in there.
Frankly, Izzy has become a comfort character for me too, probably because he's so desperately trying to keep control of a life rapidly falling apart around him and no one is listening to his cries for help. It resonates.
And I agree with your take on Edward wholeheartedly. I love that man to death but he needs to straighten up his act because his whole, "Oh no, no, the fall killed the guy I pushed down the stairs," schtick is adorable for five minutes until you realize he basically perpetuates that across everything in his life. I bet you anything that in season 2 he's like, "No I didn't hurt Izzy, the Kraken hurt Izzy," and I want someone to call him on that!
and with most scenarios in the show, I see Ed falling off the edge of the earth and Izzy going to the end of the world to bring him back… then being demonized for it.
Oh my god yes. Izzy's ways of bringing Ed back are questionable sometimes (you know, the murder thing in reference to dueling Stede) but they make perfect sense, especially in the context of everything else in the show and what everyone around him does! He tries so hard to take care of Ed and the fandom is just like, "What a dick." Or, what I saw earlier, which was, "Izzy wants to keep Ed as a pet."
Which a) was a highly racist take, as these people talk about here
and b) completely ignores all canon context that says that honestly Izzy is closer to the pet in the situation than Ed lmao
I think also one of the reasons OFMD hits so deep is there's so much love and time put into it, so we can dig into every character bit by bit, analyze scenes, talk about the context when framed against other factors like homophobia, race, class, power etc, and then keep digging and talking about everything else. There's so much detail work that's been embedded in it, as demonstrated by Izzy's ring and the tattoos they chose to put on each character that has them. I love it.
You're really welcome, Finch. I'm glad I could be a port in the storm of the fandom and I hope you stick around :)
thank you so much for such a lovely ask, it really made my day

I went from being on anon and not sharing that I was posting Seasons to being openly proud that I wrote it. Before I posted the first chapter back in October, I had finally gotten to a point where I was confident in my writing abilities. It took far too long to get here. I'd convinced myself that I deserved nothing but criticism and ought to be embarrassed by everything I wrote. Plenty of people validated that feeling, so I took that as confirmation. Surprisingly, my being anon had nothing to do with that. After making my writing private or deleting it entirely, I had a chance to really think about my relationship to sharing. (Which still needs work, as I'm about to go into.) It's a vulnerable process, but ultimately, I still want to do it. I love writing, but it's hard to find an audience, and did I actually deserve one? It was nice to write without thinking about the perfectionism. That's likely what struck me: I always enjoy creating stories, but I get caught up in cycles of editing (still do) where I nitpick out of fear that nothing I create is good enough. I looked at my writing and realized, no, I've been so hard on myself. This is good. These are interesting stories to me, and surely other people will find them interesting as well! I slowly took a few stories out of the private collection months later. But then there was Seasons. :') I was afraid that I'd be condemned for the content in Seasons. Every single story I create is self-indulgent in different ways. Some show an obvious love of steampunk, others show I like dragons, some are kinky af, others are introspective to the moon and back. They're not for everyone. They're for me. But I want them to be for other people, too, and that's okay! Still, Seasons is indulgent in its vulnerablity and rawness. I have a bad relationship with my own trauma and how I have to live with it in the world being what it is, for one. I didn't know if many other people would read it. I knew it was the kind of thing that likely wouldn't get published. It doesn't work for traditional publishing, and self-publishing can be specific about what's allowed. (Especially given the popularity of book banning in my country.) That's why it's up on AO3. I'd like it to remain there, free to read for those that might need the catharsis. Anyway, people did read it. A lot of them have. I got asks about it on another tumblr account I created just to stay anon, and while those have since died down, and I do think the story has some weaker parts that might be the reason I've scared off a handful of writers, it does seem to get a lot of hits each time I update. People who don't usually comment sometimes pop in suddenly to say they've been reading a while or still are reading. It's really touching. I don't need to to validate my relationship with my writing, but it does validate my relationship with sharing. Perhaps that is what made it easier to feel comfortable with coming off anon in baby steps. I'm anxious to finish Seasons and start sharing more of my other works! (And getting back to writing a few of them.) I'm proud of those novels too! :D Oh, and an odd side effect, but my pride in Seaons has made me love my other works like Rascal and The Dragons' Cosmos even more. It's not Seasons, per se, just a general... feeling that the more I love one story, the good I see in others, and it keeps going. Honestly, I know it's hard to believe people when they say it's worth being confident and saying positive things, that you should accept compliments, et cetera. Especially if you've ever been in any writing groups or fandoms where your work is the centerpiece for anyone's jokes. It gets reallllly fucking hard to overcome that. So I'm not going to say, "Oh hey, here's advice!" I know from experience no one is going to take it. But I will say this: when I was active on twitter, I saw a lot of fairly well-known authors talking about imposter syndrome and a lack of confidence, as well as the humiliation they've gone through before and while in the industry.
To conclude: all that advice was right, is what I'm saying! XD
(please just let me post my lazy conclusion, tumblr, I beg of you)
