It's so interesting to look at the new page (2.0.3) as compared to chapters 14 and 15. We know that Alinua is trying not to level city blocks and to keep people safe, and Shrike sees her restraint as cowardice. It's like someone not acting in their full power offends her.
The positioning of the characters here versus in 1.15.9 and 1.15.12 (group shots, with 1.15.12 panel 3 being the closest line up of characters to Shrike's flaskback on 2.0.3, but very different stances) is very interesting. On 2.0.3, we've got edgy loner Falst (I saw a comment on the page how this reflects Shrike's view of ferin which was interesting), Erin looking like he would unironically do the haughty noble lady laugh (also those eyebrows what), many others have pointed out how different Alinua's stance here is- it's designed to reflect the "hanger-on" and "coward" that Shrike sees, just a scared elf, and big buff angry Tess, with the lightning scar, muscles, and serious face on display. In the sequence from 1.15.9 to 1.15.12, things are different. We see Alinua, Falst, and Tess making a plan, and deciding to throw subtlety out the window. Falst and Tess, while ready to fight to buy Alinua time, soften and smile when Erin appears. Alinua does not have the same panicked expression as Shrike remembers, instead quickly enacting the plan- we see on 1.15.10 that she's already started growing vines. Erin looks less smug and more serious. He isn't smiling, but instead cutting to the heart of the matter ("Are you done pretending this is about the law?").
Comparing more with 1.14.11-15, the sequence in which Shrike first interacts with Alinua and Falst. In 1.14.11, Alinua used the melon seeds to keep the hunters off Tess, even with Falst trying to convince her to leave, and seeing the apparent danger. Alinua looks a bit panicked between 1.14.12 and 1.14.14, but nothing like Shrike remembers. In these pages, the hunters notice the two, Falst gets shot with the arrow, and the two are almost arrested. The arrests get averted when Alinua (panels 8 and 10 on 1.14.14) goes all glowy green eyes and, using the melon seeds from earlier, makes a wall of plants, entangling some of the hunters (just barely missing Shrike) and allowing the trio to escape. First- very cool epic magic. Second, comparing 1.14.14 and 15 with page 13 makes it look like Shrike wasn't too far from Alinua. The plant wall barely missed her. All Shrike says to that is that "the elf" is a "heavier hitter than [she] expected."
And yet. Yet 2.0.3, Shrike calls Alinua a coward for seemingly not biting back while being chased. As the audience, know that, had Erin not intervened in ch. 15, Shrike would have seen more of Alinua's abilities. With the destruction of the prison, and Zuurith rebuilding with Vash's words in mind, Shrike's whole world and way of life has changed, leaving her with "a new victory to want," as Trusk puts it. If Shrike tries to fight Alinua on her own, to not let this new power walk away, then she will likely see just how much the area of Zuurith was holding Alinua back (people in buildings that could be hurt, rules restraining everything, no good dirt). Shrike's character is both fascinating and irritating all at once. She has seen the bad of Zuurith, been in the arena, and found a way to make a profit. As she says on 1.15.7, "My dream is to win. And I have. I played their game and now they let me do whatever I want." On 1.15.19, when Trusk asks why she isn't pursuing, she says that arresting a foreign dignitary isn't fun before admitting that the city makes her tired. Potentially, after the events of the past chapters, (a night in comic time), Shrike is trying to wrestle with her world being torn open. So she follows the person who broke it, with the line "and here I thought I knew what winning looked like."
I am very excited for this potential confrontation. I am also excited to see how Shrike handles her changing world view.

I'm Dating A Psychopath - By NoSleepAreWe (8.5/10)
Tumblr media
This is an independently published series, and the team behind it is not messing around. The artist behind it has a reputation already and a Patreon and experience+++. This has the potential to go mainstream because it's a crime drama. It's not a romance. Obsession and disturbing themes will be involved, and the author has specifically warned the audience. They seem to know that their art has lured in romance lovers, but that's not what is happening here.
This is not fluff.
Finn is weird.
She's an unpleasant, unsociable girl that doesn't like to look people in the eye. She's pretty enough, and she has a decent job but she's introverted in an unhealthy way. When people do try to speak to her she gets annoyed.
Tumblr media
Unpleasant female characters are a thing for me. When I see one I expect good or higher quality writing. Why? Well in most webtoons of this nature the female characters tend to fall into achetypes. Finn doesn't fit into one. She makes people uncomfortable. She's not a cute girl or a sweet older sister or a broke college student. She doesn't fit in...but not in the usual way. Finn cannot be fixed with a makeover or a date. You'll get it if you read it.
Tumblr media
Finn is really into serial killer documentaries. She can also take insults like a champ. The two women in front of her are NOT malicious. They are NOT stereotype fueled bullies. They're two friends who sometimes eat lunch with the quiet Finn. Finn is the outlier. The woman with no close friends. The women whisper about how Finn doesn't listen when people talk, but it's not in a mean way. They don't know how to deal with her. They're all adults so they just quietly eat and stop trying to talk to Finn.
Tumblr media
Finn sometimes does feel...regret about her weirdness. She wishes she could grin easily like everyone. She practices smiling in a window, and that's when we see her stalker. His name is Isaac, and he's her co-worker. He's popular and handsome and brand new in the office. She isn't interested in him or anyone, so she doesn't even greet him. This scene is a little off, but I didn't think he was stalking her at first. He might not be. Isaac wants to "play games" with Finn. That doesn't mean he's interested in her personally. That just means she's a fun target.
Tumblr media
There's been a sting of violent murders. The cops know it's a serial killer. Finn boldly confronts Isaac when he follows her home, and he has a lineup of excuses ready. Isaac is very good at acting normal. He also tries to use romance as a tool to get close to Finn
Tumblr media
Isaac insists he's not following her. He has proof. His new apartment is in her building. He starts talking about destiny and how unlikely and romantic their meeting is. Finn just wants to go inside and ignore him, but he keeps talking. Finn says destiny is nonsense, and Isaac changes course. He praises her for her logical thinking. He says he was lying, and that she's right. This isn't destiny. He's stalking her, and he knows alot about her. Then, before she leaves he says he's just kidding.
Tumblr media
There's alot of arrogance lurking inside Isaac. I don't think he's the wealthy genius type, so he has to blend in and have a job. He can't do anything drastic, but it seems like he wants to. I don't know if he's the serial killer. He is connected to Finn though. Finn was traumatized by a killer, who has resurfaced. Her obsession with studying killers is a way to cope. In my opinion being arrogant is much worse than being awkward, but...society doesn't work that way. Finn won't be able to expose Isaac easily, because she's weird and he's popular.
Tumblr media
Finn is in contact with the detective on the case. Scott is like an uncle to her. He's a frazzled man who has seen alot of shit, but he's very kind. Finn visits him at the station because that's where she feels safe.
Tumblr media
Finn dreams about getting beaten sometimes.
Is the killer on the loose her father?
We don't know.
Finn doesn't know Isaac, so there's no clear connection between them. The beginning is just snapshots from Finn's perspective, and she doesn't know anything.
She's afraid.
Tumblr media
Isaac is extremely bold, arrogant and manipulative. He told Finn's manager that he wanted to ask Finn out. Finn's manager is a nosy, kind thirty something that thinks a date will fix Finn. Isaac uses that. The manager accidentally/casually??? reveals Finn's address. She's a sucker for love stories. She is the reason why Finn has a dangerous neighbor.
Isaac even tells that manager about his I'm-your-stalker "prank". This is where dread seriously sets in. The manager smacks his arm and tells him he won't get a date with creepy jokes.
That confirms it.
He can do what he wants for the time being. He does things like this as a test. I'm certain of it. He wants to know what he can get away with. A weird person like Finn would get whispers if she made a stalker joke. Stalking is not a joke, but apparently it's a silly mistake if you're sweet enough.
If you're handsome enough.
If you can blend in well enough.

Okay I had this idea for a while now and I have no clue if it would be canon at all but. I gotta share it, I gotta -
So some context: I saw a series of post where it was like. A what if the Paldea + kitakami gang grew apart bc the mc left or something. I should be very clear this isn't any shade to those posts at all, cause I actually think it's super interesting to explore! But my mind went " okay what if I did the opposite".
So in my head I was like " What if Luca for some reason went off the grid and lost contact with his friends. But his friends still remained friends despite of it". Cause ya know, I thought it showed that their friendship wasn't reliant on luca being there. Don't get me wrong, it was tough: Luca was what brought them all together and helped them so much. Him not being there was hard- they were moments where they all thought their friendship was over. But it didn't! Their friendship prevailed! And it lasted all the way up till adulthood. This does include Kiki and Carmine! They all keep in touch with each other and their lives. But Luca? Pretty much no contact.
Which gets me into the shit that fucks me over with this idea/au- Luca himself. Luca is. Not happy. Not in the slightest. He left to pursue a dream that probably wasn't even his, and he continued to drift along in an uncomfortable sea of dissatisfaction. After a while it lead to him getting increasingly anxious: his friends all could be living happy fulfilling lives while he's stuck in this sea of nothing. She should be happy. She should be fulfilled, but they're not and it haunts them. He's too afraid to call his friends. After it's been so long and when she essentially ghosted them for literal years, they probably wanted nothing to do with them, right? Life moves on, and so should he. What really fucks me over with this idea/au is that Luca is just so. Hollow. He isn't as bright as he used to be. That charming, infectious smile, the shining light in his eyes- they're gone. He's more nervous than anything, putting on a soft fake smile that gets him through the day. It's like he's an entirely different person now.
R.B finds him. Naturally. How and why doesn't matter, what matters is that she finds him and drags his ass back to Paldea so they can confront his friends. Luca is not excited by this. He misses them dearly yes, but he isn't ready to see them ( then when will he?), but R.B is having none of it. So they go home and the reactions....vary.
R.b was the one that found him, and the one that dragged him back home. But she was never angry. Stern yes, but not angry. In fact she was more than willing to help Luca. She kinda acts as a mediator for the group.
Nemona is the one that hugs him first, acting as if he never left, treating him like she always had. She literally tackled him into a hug when seeing him again. I do think there's a tiny bit of leftover resentment and sadness from Luca leaving- one of the first people who finally Got her left - she tries to keep it positive! Really! But it had hurt back then and it still hurts now- she's choosing to focus on the fact that her bestest rival is back. Hopefully for good.
Penny is bitter, and I think she deserves to be. She had a deep fear of team star leaving her, and back then she just accepted it. But now that she's older? Now with Luca, who changed her life for the better? Who just up and left? Yeah she's bitter. She wouldn't have even been there if it weren't for R.B and Nemona. Though deep down she kinda blames herself. She can hack into the league easy peasy, but finding a friend in the Internet was something she never considered. She wonders if things would be different if she brute forced her way to Luca before the ghosting got bad. But overall? She's bitter. And again, I think it's deserved.
Arven feels betrayed. He has been for a long time. He was already abandoned once by his biological parents, twice by the ai versions of said parents, and the one person who he cares for so much just. Left. So was it all for nothing? Was everything they did together for nothing? Cause that's what it feels like. Early on the feeling was particularly bad, but with the help of everyone around him( and R.B n him pretty much being each other's rock ) by the time Luca comes back he isn't angry. He's simply distant....but also holding out some hope. He calls Luca "bud" now, which is so weird.
Kieran and Luca probably had to break up when Luca decided to leave in the first place - and even if they didn't then, they definitely did when Luca started ghosting. So when Luca came back I imagined Kieran wanting to be petty. So petty. "Show him what he missed" petty. But then he actually saw Luca and it was nothing Kieran had imagined. He was confused. Why wasn't Luca smiling like he used to. Why was the light in his eyes gone? Seeing Luca again pretty much put a halt on Kieran's planned bravado, and just left him utterly confused. He doesn't know how to act around him
Carmine is very good at putting on an angry front. Mainly bc she is pissed on the behalf of her brother who had gotten his heart broken. But as always, underneath that raging flame is someone genuinely worried. R.B still had to hold her back from pouncing Luca though.
And that's everything! Keep in mind this idea/au is all of them as adults, if I didn't make that clear already lol. this isn't canon exactly but I do love me some angst. Also please no I see Luca as a masc pinkie pie lmao.

If I reference 9w1 description with what I feel like a weakness in myself - being too passive, believing myself unimportant, slow reaction to things, inertia in asserting myself. And those people closest to me always complain about - letting people walk over me, not asserting myself enough and being too stubborn. I think 9w1 makes sense. I'll try 'live' 9w1 for a while to see if it fits.
One thing I see from 9w1s in my life is they are REALLY passive and unambitious. Most of them live for other people and not themselves. They don't have their own ambition and will go along with whatever their family/friends/society tell them to do. Like, working for government because their family tells them to.
They sound like SFJ 9s with 2 fixes. That's what high Fe/9 does together -- allows others to choose the agenda because of Fe also telling them that it's important to care about other people and look after their feelings. You should not be comparing yourself as a thinker to feeler 9s. I just spent four hours with an ISFJ 9w1 the other day in which she talked at length to me about this -- she told me that she feels like it's her duty and responsibility to go along with her husband and do whatever he wants all the time, even though she doesn't want to do it, because "he has nobody else to do this with him." He has no male friends anymore (most of them have passed away or moved), so he needs her. Admittedly, there's a 2 fixed component of this, but most FJ 9w1s are this way in that they feel responsible for the other person's feelings. FJs already live for other people and not themselves; add in 9, and it feels like too much effort to rebel.
You need to stop thinking about 9 as passivity, and think about it in terms of what it actually is -- the 9 saying "you/this is not worth the effort of me inconveniencing myself."
Don't want to argue? You're not worth it.
Don't want to assert which dinner I want? It's not worth it.
Go along with something? It doesn't matter.
They can also plant their flag, sit down, and stubbornly refuse to move in a real or proverbial sense. 9s know when they are being pushed and find a way to resist that is non-confrontational but that puts out the message loud and clear of "you can't make me..." (hurry up and get ready to leave; change my mind; give up this dream; exert energy about this; care about this).
9s are about inner calm and that can mean pretending I care when I don't just so you leave me alone, or it can mean saying I don't care and meaning it and turning a deaf ear to any protests. 9s are double gut types with either wing which means they trust themselves to make decisions, and are a 'sold wall.' It's not their problem if people run headfirst into that wall now and again.
Is this a withdrawn type tendency? When people ask me to go out with them (to a bar or a gatherings) I usually refuse. I always prefer to stay home after work if I can. I like being with people, but the sheer amount of effort I need to put to go out with them (1 and a half hour of traveling, meeting with people for no discernible reason) puts me off. I want to be with people, but I don't want to overexert myself just to make that happens. And the bar is also loud and sensory overwhelming, I prefer quiet dinner or street food more.
There's nothing about that which isn't 9. "It takes too much effort." "Why am I doing this?" "It's too loud, and it's not comfy."
Or when someone disagrees with me and I know I can't change their mind, I'll just get up and leave. No negotiation, just get up and leave the scene. I have done this door-slam many times. I don't want to spend energy to change someone's mind if it's not work-related.
The ISFJ 9 I mentioned earlier will sometimes just get her keys and leave in the middle of an argument. Once, she didn't come back for three days. I've had IFP 9s abruptly log off in the middle of a conversation because they suddenly felt tired or didn't like what I had to say -- no goodbye just gone. Shutting something down is 9ish.
(There's really no point in arguing with people. You can't change their mind so putting effort into stupid disagreements is pointless. Does not mean we don't all do it from time to time, though. ;)
And I have tendency to tell people everything I feel and rarely keep it to myself (if I feel like I can, otherwise I'll ignore them and keep working). Is that something a 9w1 would do? Or that's simply Ne-Fe needing to process emotions while talking?
Extroversion and Fe.

Hi! Could you maybe give us a snippet/spoiler of the next chapter? I think i'm going into ATOC withdrawal (I don't mean to sound pushy, I've just been craving well written stories recently, and yours is one of the best :) I'm gonna go replay it now)
This is more than fair, I haven't been posting any updates because there isn't much to update on right now but I AM still working on Chapter 8 even if progress has been really slow 😩
Thank you for all your patience, and here's a small snippet!
“Your Imperial Majesty, you must understand,” the scholar whispers urgently. “This knowledge, should it fall into wrong hands, it could change everything. Everything.” But it already has, you want to say. It has changed everything you thought you knew about your parents, everything they’ve ever told you. They tried to take this secret to their grave for Arsur’s sake, for your protection, and maybe even out of shame. All that did was leave you unprepared to face the consequences. “Can you guarantee that no one else knows of this?” you ask instead, not ready to confront the ruins of the sunken home within you, resting gently beneath the surface of your awareness until you return to it again in your dreams. The scholar avoids your gaze, the hesitance in their features already an answer to your question. “No, Your Imperial Majesty.” You take a breath, sitting back as you consider the magnitude of this secret that has claimed lives already. Through your own turmoil, however, one thing remains crystal clear: you know what to do next. “We need to go to the mountains.”

An Added Benefit to Self-Sacrifice
Angel!OC x Incubus!Kai ;; Kinktober Masterlist sub!AFAB!OC x Dom!idol
Requested by @ninibears-erigom
Summary: Raven is a guardian angel to a pretty female human. As a result, her human became a target of a powerful incubus, so she saves her by taking her place.
Word Count: 1545
Contains: Self-sacrifice, sass, massage (male receiving), knife involved (no blood or threats), Master/maid roleplay, bondage, punishment, overstimulation, praise, multiple orgasms (female receiving), unprotected sex, breeding (technically), marking/biting, toys (vibrator&dildo and mention of Wartenberg wheel), tentacles (yes you read it right)
A/N: This was pure filth that I sat down and cranked out in one (6 hour) sitting, and I needed to take a break after writing it to heal my hand and my wash my sins away. You’re welcome. Also, for reference, this OC is 5′6″ and 5′8″ in the heels mentioned.
Tumblr media
Raven found her job to be relatively easy. She got lucky with the assignment. Her human rarely did anything that needed interference. She is, however, very conventionally attractive, so Raven often watched the boys around her closely. Thank goodness, too, because the poor girl found herself targetted by a high-power incubus named Kai.
The best way to remove the target is to confront the demon herself, so Raven finds herself in Hell.
"Looking for something, Miss Guardian Angel?"
Raven quickly spins around to find Kai leaning against the wall with a bored look on his face. With nobody else around, Raven realizes that she isn't ready to face him about the issue.
"Sorry, I must've teleported to the wrong realm."
She turns around, but Kai appears directly in front of her. He tilts her chin up to initiate eye contact, then smirks at the fear he sees in her eyes.
"You sure? Looks like you came straight to me. Tell me, angel. Are you here because I chose your precious human?"
Raven steps back and opens her wings in case she needs a quick escape. This response shows Kai that he's right, so a deep laugh echoes in the cave. Both of them know that Kai has more power here. It is Hell, after all; Raven's powers are nearly useless here, while the terrain amplifies Kai's abilities.
"You want me to change my mark, right? I can make you a deal. I'll remove the mark if you're the replacement. You're feisty, so it'll definitely be more fun."
A silence falls over the space as Raven contemplates whether to trust him.
Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
Raven looks over, and Kai leans against a grandfather clock. Agitated by his humor and obvious show of power, Raven agrees to be the replacement, so her human doesn't have to go through this. Kai snaps, and both of them appear in a dark bedroom.
With just enough light to see, Raven looks down to see herself in a stereotypical "sexy maid" outfit.
"Oh, hell no."
"Yes, sweetheart. You see, I already had her dream planned out, so the only change is who serves me." Kai strides out of the shadows adorned in a full suit, "Now, come help your Master."
As if controlled by his words, Raven walks to him, heels clicking against the tiled floor, and takes his suit jacket. She drapes it over her shoulder before undoing his tie. Even with the heels, Kai still looks down on her, eyeing her like she's his dinner after he starved for days. When the loosened tie hangs off his neck, he grabs it and wraps it around one of her wrists.
"S-Sir, what are you doing?" The words are part of the script, but Raven's voice drips of defiance as she questions him.
Kai silently takes Raven's other hand and ties both wrists together. He holds the end of the tie like a lead but pulls her restrained hands towards his chest.
"Finish your job before talking to me. You know better than that."
Raven looks down with a smirk as she quickly unbuttons his shirt to reveal his toned chest and abs. Despite the cliche situation, she has to silently admit that she enjoys this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be sinful without consequences. To sacrifice herself for her human, the angels will praise her, and she gets to taste sin for free.
Kai clears his throat, forcing Raven to look up at him again. "Am I supposed to stay in these uncomfortable slacks? Are you new here?"
"I'm sorry, Sir. Let me get those for you."
Kai shrugs off the shirt, letting it fall to the floor. At the same time, he releases the tie as he watches Raven squat down to undo the button and zipper on his pants. She slowly pulls them down to his ankles, lightly brushing his member as she moves from one pant leg to the other with her restrained hands. Kai ignores the touch and steps out of his pants before taking a seat on the bed.
"You're so slow today. Should I fire you or just discipline you?"
As Raven stands, Kai spreads his legs. He beckons her to stand between them, then pulls down on the tie, bringing her to her knees. She looks up at him naively, so he leans in close, his lips only inches from hers.
"You're lucky your Master's nice enough to keep you. You better treat me like a king for the rest of the night. I need stress relief."
Raven decides to take a bit of control by changing the script, "Do you need a massage, Sir? Or maybe a hot towel? I can get you whatever you need. Just let me know."
Kai chuckles at the obviously-fake sweetness in her voice, but he decides to let this play out by removing the restraints on her wrists and suggesting she give him a shoulder massage. The obedient maid stands and moves onto the bed behind her Master. The massage lasts what feels like 15 minutes, with Kai moaning continuously in an attempt to arouse his servant. Then, he places his hand on hers to tell her to stop.
"Raven, this was a great massage, but I still need to discipline you for earlier. Please, lay down."
She complies while Kai opens a drawer and pulls out some rope. Knowingly, Raven holds out her wrists, but Kai ties them above her head, attached to the headboard. Then, he ties her ankles to the corners of the bed. After ensuring that the knots are secure, he pulls out a vibrator and a knife.
"Master, what are you-"
Kai cuts her off by using the knife to cut the maid outfit open, revealing the black lingerie set underneath. He carefully cuts off her underwear, proud to see them moist from the sounds he was making earlier.
As he switches on the vibrator, he warns, "This is punishment. Do not make noise, or the punishment only gets worse. Since I'm nice, you can cum whenever you need to, as long as you stay quiet."
Raven takes a sharp inhale as he places the vibrator against her clit, but manages to silence herself otherwise. Kai uses a piece of extra rope to secure the toy in place, then leaves the bed to sit in the shadows with the remote.
At random intervals, the speed on the vibrator changes. After 20 torturous minutes, Raven reaches her high and releases a short whine with it. Instantly, Kai hits max speed on the remote and returns to the bed.
"I said no noise, sweetheart. You were doing so well, too. Let's add something new to the equation."
Digging through the drawers, he finds a small tentacle-shaped dildo and a Wartenberg wheel, which sparks an idea. He grabs the dildo and quickly pushes it between Raven's folds. She bites her lip as the added sensations quickly build towards another orgasm due to the sensitivity from her last release.
Kai holds himself over her body, watching her struggle from the overstimulation. To push her over the edge, he whispers in her ear before biting down on her shoulder hard enough to leave a mark.
"You're my servant. Don't ever forget. Scream your Master's name as you cum."
As he bites down, Raven can't hold back. She reaches her second orgasm and screams his name, just as he demanded.
"That's my good girl. You can listen well most times." He removes the vibrator and the dildo, giving Raven some time to catch her breath. He leaves both toys on the bed while he backs away again.
When she hears his underwear hit the floor, her eyes widen as she realizes he's not finished with her. Craning her neck to try and see where he went, she fails until feeling the end of the bed dip under his weight.
"Since you've been so good, I think you've earned it."
He leans over, kissing the tender skin from his bite, then kisses her swollen lips to distract her from the pain as he pushes his sizeable length inside. She moans into the kiss and squirms against the restraints. To keep her still without grabbing more tools, Kai summons tentacles from the floor to hold her down. He summons a specific demon that emits calming pheromones with their suckers, so Raven gradually calms down as they attach to her arms, legs, and chest.
When the mood calms, Kai begins moving. He starts strong, slowly increasing his speed as his high approaches. Knowing Raven has already finished twice, Kai uses this opportunity to pay attention to his pleasure. After only five minutes, he reaches that high, finishing deep inside of her. He pulls out and instructs the tentacle monsters to retreat. He admires the purple marks that line Raven's body, especially his bite mark on her shoulder.
He unties her and kisses the marks left by the ropes. As she looks at him with glazed eyes, he reminds, "You did well, sweetheart. I'm keeping you. Don't forget. You're mine now, Raven."
Then, as if nothing happened, Raven wakes up in her guardian hideout. The only proof that the whole situation wasn't a dream is Kai's bite mark, swollen and bruised on her shoulder.

One of my most favourite confrontations between Mahidevran and Hürrem in the series is the one after Mahidevran sent Olga to Süleiman in episode 61. It's both fun, yet filled with meaningful character dialogue, managing to successfully deliver a thematic message that eventually finds its retroactive way, despite of it all seeming like a yet another smackdown fest by Hürrem at first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The scene begins with their typical confrontational energy, the rivalry chemistry immediately paves its way forward. Hürrem is ready to face her for what she did and Mahidevran, while not being interested at first, goes with her flow regardless, setting the mood for what follows.
Hürrem: You've sent a concubine to his majesty.
Mahidevran: I'm replacing Valide. Pleasing his majesty is one of my duties.
Hürrem: Let God not give you other worries. Do you want to cover the lack of your femininity this way?
Mahidevran seems very engrained in her role as the head of the harem and connects it with her own desire to take revenge for her wounded pride and for all the pain they caused her. The first excuse she finds for sending Olga to SS refered to the rules and tradition that give her that right, but we know by context that there's something else going on, this was both a move driven by her vendetta and a provoked move - she decided to do this after Hü told her she's the one ruling the privy chamber and perhaps Mahidevran accepted it as a challenge to her power, because, honestly, I doubt she would've attempted such a thing if she weren't provoked like this. Hürrem, on the other hand, gives her own "interpretation" as to why Mahidevran took action. To be blunt, it sits wrong with me right from the start, because it demonstrates a huge amount of internalized mysoginy on full display and it's sad, in a way, that this is what the system encourages at the moment - you're nothing if you sleep alone in your bed, if you don't have the sultan's back. There's a glimmer of possibility Hürrem said it only to render Mahidevran vulnerable and one could understand where she comes from, since she has experienced quite a lot of similar offenses from that same person. And when a confrontation of the like occurs, her first instinct is to think of a comeback, to pull rank and highlight why she's better than her like she does in all their encounters in this batch of episodes. That hardly excuses or whitewashes this statement, though, because for a person who has been shown to fight the system and call out prejudice (even though it was mostly only she was subjected to it or it was about something that concerned her specifically), seeing that she had absorbed some of it and applies it without a second thought leaves a sour taste for me.
Mahidevran: Worry about your own problems, Hürrem. Did you really think his majesty couldn't be with other women?
Hürrem: This is impossible.
Two major beliefs of Mahidevran and Hürrem's characters come on the surface: they drive the dialogue and help the rest of the scene unfold the way it did. Mahidevran brushes off Hürrem's last statement and brings back tradition to the forefront, which begins to highlight a belief of hers that she shared with Valide, that there is a constant cycle in the harem that no one, not even Hürrem, is capable to entirely break. To Hürrem it's impossible for SS to ever have other women at this point, it's something unthinkable for her already. She feels she has fully broken that cycle.
This scene, unlike the confrontation in episode 58, has well done retroactive irony while serving the context of the episode it's in in a plausible enough way that doesn't seem showed in just for the sake of it. The context of the episode puts Hürrem in the right by showing Olga returning from SS's chambers almost immediately after Hürrem says: "This is impossible." and it's the place where this plot-line transitions to another one, leaving the rest of the confrontation to hang in the balance for a while. Maybe SS had truly given up taking other women ever since the wedding, as shown by this and SS refusing another concubine sent by Valide in the wedding episode.
However, we know that this stops being the case later on and whether it's through the decision to bring in yet another drama tool, yet another annoying stretched narrative opposition in the face of the concubine arcs, it's a fact and we could say that this scene ends up being a good enough framework to set us up for it, intentionally or not.
Mahidevran: Then why is there a concubine in his chamber?
Hürrem: What concubine? Maybe that one?
Tumblr media
This, to me, is a demonstration of how the tables can turn in the harem at literally any moment. Meryem Uzerli's little amazing, subtle facial expression says it all. When Mahidevran asks the question, we see for a very split second that Hürrem's wondering how to refute her until the concubine appears in the heat of the argument due to sheer luck. Like, if she had already returned to her rooms before the scene occurred, it would've gone much differently! This isn't all that important here, but I love how Meryem showed a slight probability for Hürrem to lose the argument, which contrasts with all her confident remarks before and after this moment. It's just very neat stuff.
Hürrem: Many girls were introduced to his majesty. Among them, there was even a princess. Where are they now? Look around you. You will not see anyone but me.
Speaking of confident remarks, there comes another one of Hürrem's that no matter how many concubines came, they all went and now there is no one other than her. This line further sets a consistent trend of ambiguity, because she's right in the context of the episode and it encapsulates the resolution of these particular plot-lines of Hürrem and Süleiman in the season and we can get behind her words overall both in the arc and in rewatch, in spite of the retroactive irony, but she's wrong in that it's the end of her harem fights, very far from it, as season 3 and season 4 prove. She hasn't completely won yet, even though she sets the impression that she has.
What I also find interesting in this scene is the back and forth throwing of past - present - future between the two sides. They make a perfect showcase of what these characters represent, their states, their losses, their desires, their hopes, dreams and philosophies. Here, in example, Hürrem makes a reference to a part of her obstacles in the past, acknowledging that they were there regardless, but then she immediately goes back to the present with "Where are they now?". Nowhere in the scene she considered the possibilities of the future, the sheer probability that it all may change one day (as it happened, in many ways, through Firuze), focusing on the currently undeniable truth the present day presents.
That same throwing back and forth continues, but with another note which instantly places the two women against each other again:
Mahidevran: I was also loved once, Hürrem. Mustafa is the fruit of that love. Ask Gülfem Hatun if you want. She will tell you how much she suffered because of me.
Hürrem: You always tell this story.
Unlike Hürrem, who only references the past, Mahidevran laments it and takes pride in it, it being the highlight of her once beautiful life. But we know what went down afterwards, adding in the possibility that maybe, it would all be temporary and what one may have now, may change, because Mahidevran was also in Hürrem's position once. Hürrem however, calls out her fixation on the past, in a similar fashion to how she has done it before (E59: "Are you being proud of your past now? Let me remind you: You're still a slave."), what she had doesn't matter, it's the now that is important to Hürrem, which is a solid thematic note to her character arc.
Though, we have this line of dialogue in response:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We here notice that no matter how long it took for them to do it, Mahidevran and Hürrem actually had parallel arcs, in terms of letting go of the past. This line makes for such a striking revelation of Mahidevran's emotional state from her perspective that only continued what episode 46 hinted at and episode 55 directly started. (E55: "I ripped out the love I had of your father of my heart, I threw it into the sea! He doesn't matter to me anymore. Now you are the only one in my heart.") It's rather surprising that she says these words now - Mahidevran's rule of the harem is arguably her at her worst, doing what she does out of the last ounces of her wanting payback for the sad, bitter years. It's precisely what she lost that motivated her, that was a sure part of the reason she sent Olga to SS and yet, we have that honest confession, that grasp of acceptance. Mahidevran's battle with SS was lost very early on and it took her very slow and gradual development for her to accept it and by E61, she was doing the last steps to do so. She tries hard to convince Hürrem that no matter how hard she tries, there is a cycle in this harem that cannot be changed, Mahidevran has come to terms with it, so Hürrem has to do the same. In a way, she was probably trying to say that they both have been fighting a losing battle and she expresses a small amount of sympathy over it, too - she knows what it's like and it's hard, but it's like some unwritten law that it's not worth it in the end and that everyone gets affected by it, without exception. That's how she begins to look upon her present and show a hint of the future.
Out of the particular context, this line could be a very nice stronger endorsement of the franchise's themes, because, truly, no one ever got a good, triumphant, heroic ending. And it was like a cycle: everyone had to face the feelings of sorrow, grief and loss, everyone had to suffer in this time period, everyone dies. Gülfem called Hürrem's life a fairy tale in E134, but that "fairy tale" came to an end after her death. And if we leave that aside, there is hardly a breather episode even for the biggest of victories, no matter how many victories you've won, they would always "have their end", the narrative would always condemn them one way or another.
Mahidevran: One day a woman will appear and would destroy your indestructible love!
The future is finally put on the front with the scene overall and with Mahidevran herself. It's a continuation of her belief that Hürrem would be "detroned", regardless of all. Thing is, she also doesn't consider her own future, only the one of her rival's. She believes in her own victory that is opposed in the present, but would surely come in the future, a belief she holds until the end of the series. Even though I doubt the writers planned Firuze's existence right back then per say, this line sounds like such foreshadowing to her in retrospect, which makes Mahidevran both right and wrong with this quote. Firuze caused an actual continuous rift between Hürrem and Süleiman, making her doubt his love in ways she hadn't before. Nazenin comes into the picture, as well. But no one truly succeeds to properly destroy the love between Süleiman and Hürrem and they managed to prevail, despite of all the narrative opposition. She still stayed the most dear woman to SS's heart, no matter what. There is a slight possibility of Mahidevran judging the situation one hundred percent to herself here, claiming rather that the appearance of another woman would make Hürrem fall out of love with SS and destroy that, instead, just like it was with her, but since Mahidevran called the same line back during the Firuze episodes, I think she was referring to the rift Firuze would cause and how would Hü fall deeper and deeper.
Hürrem: Mahidevran, don't think of me as your equal.
Tumblr media
This line is very telling in that Hürrem considers herself different than everyone else. It has always been a part of her character, perhaps a running reminder of her unprecedented elevation in the system she's telling us about through words. And most of the interpretations I've encountered of this line are exactly this: it is epic, badass, it is delivered in such a shading sassy way that could only be respected or applauded. However, it is just as possible for this infamous one-liner to be presented as the culmination of not only her persistent insistence to assert herself as different and special, but her continuous unwillingness to be compared to anyone else in the harem. And usually she's compared to guess who? Mahidevran. She doesn't want to even think of the possibility to be compared with her by this point (starting from E40 where after she was freed, she said: "Now I'm not equal to you." right to Mahidevran's face and continuing forward into S03 with: "I told you not to compare me to others, to Mahidevran never!" -it was something like that), but at first, which is now probably buried deep within, she feared becoming like Mahidevran. She repeated "I'm not Mahidevran!" when she was out of favor like with the Russian concubines, Mahidevran's words that she would make the same mistakes she did echoed in her head during the Isabella arc in episode 31 and earlier had a nightmare of Süleiman giving the emerald ring to Mahidevran instead of Hürrem in a completely parallel scene. (there's also the other nightmare where Mahidevran was taunting Hürrem to tell her about Leo.) Hürrem dreaded all of those things happening and tried her very best to avoid the very thoughts of it. Now, in a season nearly full of victories in her part, she had gained the belief that whatever happens, she'll always stand above the others. She wants to give off the vibe that no one would ever stop her. She has broken so many traditions and the narrative is currently rooted at her favor, all well and good, right? This line could be a mask, in a way, hiding the fear of being rejected just like the others (that doesn't completely disappear, seeing her suicide attempt in E72; also E106's menopause plot.) and striving to leave it behind her, now reaching its peak by putting not only Mahidevran, but the rest of the women into the picture, without a second of realization of the implications it causes, because well, who else was given such special attention by the Sultan? Who else was freed, who else had such a marriage, who else got out of death's door so many times, who else overcame everything, who else had a chance to "rain as fire" over all her enemies? Even though the quote applies on a much grander scale in execution, in later seasons and the way it got called back to in MCK, I feel, in this particular context, it refers to the harem and Süleiman specifically - his majesty doesn't need any other women, there is no such woman that could take away what Hürrem has and even if they stand together, they wouldn't stand a chance, because Hürrem is that massive and powerful.
The retroactive irony hits hard and here: she's right in the events of this particular episode, but the subsequent events definetly tell a different story. Hürrem's influence and power is acknowledged, especially in her last episodes, but that she's the only one capable of having such power is not necessarily true, given the existence of the SOW, some members of which reached more highs than she did, due to the evolving extent of power they could exercise in the system.
Mahidevran: Your arrogance will end you, Hürrem! One day when you're suffering in pain, I'll remind you this!
Hürrem: Mahidevran, you're not here anymore. You'll be leaving soon!
Mahidevran: You're not powerful enough for that!
The focus on the present and future is back with this quick, but substantial exchange. Mahidevran seems to count completely on what will happen in the future in the first line, while Hürrem accounts for both the present and the future, seemingly in accordance, and Mahidevran brings the confrontation back to the present, for what Hürrem talks about is currently unattainable. These lines look like a brief summary of what was established before about the beliefs of both characters: they both desire the end of one another - for Mahidevran it would happen eventually, because Hürrem would end herself in her eyes and Mahidevran would live for this moment and even witness it (and while she didn't witness it exactly, she lived and outlived them all, because there would be no death for her until they get what they deserve, a belief that carries on the strongest in season 4); for Hürrem it has already happened, but it would keep going, fueling her will to get rid of all her enemies and being in conjunction with the ongoing plot arc itself, for her attacking her enemies in all fronts in ways she hadn't before. The last line of Mahidevran's stops the dialogue between both of them for good (followed by Hürrem's smug grin), resting back on her current position, that is also how her whole set of dialogue began in the first place. Even though there was a hint of realization that she has been fighting a losing battle a while before, the part of hers that would prefer not going to the sanjack than give up now, is directly reflected on. It sets more of a parallel between how both of them are, because Mahidevran told Hürrem that arrogance would end her a few seconds ago, but now she's the one that demonstrates this same arrogance herself, starting to underestimate her own opponents yet again, simply because she rules the harem. Claiming that Hürrem doesn't have the power to send her to the sanjack by force, is true, actually, because Ibrahim interfered at the last moment, but this way Mahidevran seems to brush off Hürrem's victories completely, somehow convincing herself that she's forgotten how far has Hürrem gone and just like her rival, thinking of herself as unstoppable. (that goes on the season finale, too, where she says: "If you're powerful enough, face me by yourself!".) This attitude more or less cemented her downfall in this arc, as it would cement major flaws of Hürrem's in the future.

And then they're stopped by... Süleiman himself and I love that, because they have to stop because he comes, they have to stop because he's watching them and give him the necessary respect. Symbolically, it could be a showcase of him being the decider of everyone's fates and them having to accept his will at the end of the day.
And after he leaves, of course, Hürrem and Mahidevran prepare to carry on with their bickering, as they usually do. While that's the end of the whole confrontation, their expressions tell us it's not over yet.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
It's particularly interesting, even as a confrontational scene alone: it's longer than many of the confrontational scenes between them, it speaks more volumes about the opposing sides than any other of the kind has dreamed to. While I love Mahidevran and Hürrem's chemistry, I wish there were more scenes like this one, more nuanced interactions than vitriol and constant, almost formulaic smackdowns. Because, to me, this whole confrontation, while simple at hindsight, raised the bar to what could we have had. The rivalry of the two ladies is fascinating on a thematic level and not exploring its depth further, would be a myriad of wasted opportunities.
This scene did right all you could think of: composition, soundtrack, attention to detail, chemistry, dialogue and opposing two sides on a respectful, unbiased, while narratively provoked, way. I adore the way it aged: as I said, it created a perfect blend between context of the episode/plot arc and retroactive irony and the mix of cause and effect of soapy intrigues, character exploration through lines and all the coming thematic stuff, while being filled with dynamic and fun energy. And it's absolutely sublime for it.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Stitch was still for me an mysterious man despite the memories I had with him before and the voice he was taking each time there were an discussion showed how he was trying to put an scare into me and it did worked an little, feared by his presence and seeing him in his same clothes but when the talks were made, I was making him sure that it wasn' really working. Deeply inside of me, I know that I was hating Stitch long before everything and I still do, that was almost the only thing that me & Adler could really get along.
After his departure from my cell, it was better for me to get back to sleep and the only thing that I could do for hours was...to wait. He told me that my next test was going to happen in an day but nothing was there to help me pass the time, only looking deeply in each wall of my cell, struggling to not becoming crazy at each hour passed and to add to that, no one was coming here to make an talk or to make me move to do an test...no one was coming to talk....
It was mostly guards that were coming to bring me some things to eat & drink and that was it, they didn't wanted to talk to me and I was thinking the same thing. They were maybe knowing the story about me but I wasn't going to put an word out of my mouth to them. Time passed and finally, at the end of the day, the 6th of June, Stitch came in my cell...to tell me that my next step was reported to next day...meaning more waiting for me and more desperation to feel inside...only that.
The next day wasn't so much different except that all day, I was wondering what my 'next test' would be to be honest : was it going to be another talk with Adler ? were they going to confront me to someone of my real past ? I couldn't know and that was only intriguing me as the long hours passed until the door opened at, I presumed to be the moment of the test they are going to put me in.
"Are you ready for your next test, Bell ?" I looked up, sit on the edge of my bed to see Sonya themselves, standing up next to the door of my cell.
"I guess that I will not know until you're bring me to another place ?" I suggested, moving on the bed to put my back against the wall and they nodded to me.
"Stitch said that it's not necessary for you to know for the moment." They replied, joining their hands together.
"Stitch said an lot of things but he can't tell it to my face." I exclaimed, making an little laugh about it, watching Sonya carefully. "Why is he always sending someone else to do his work ?" I asked them clearly, my hands on my lap.
"Well, he said that....." They stopped themself, maybe realizing that they needed to change words to talk about their brother. "Stitch doesn't really want to create an bond with you because of things he told me." They added, looking outside the cell, it was just them here, not even Knight doing the 'taxi'
"He told you things that I never did." I said, still talking & sounding like Bell would do.
"He explained that you were the one to broke his arm." They spoke up, putting their hands behind them as in the inside, I was resisting the urge to make an smile on my face. "That...you were the 'Winter Soldier'." Instantly, the smile in the inside faded away by hearing those words.
"What is this name ? An joke ?" I scoffed around, faking to hate that name even if I was really hating it. "Who would call someone like that ?" I added.
"To be honest, I wouldn't never do that." They expressed, making an relieved breath.
"Why are you like that ?" I whispered almost loudly.
"Uhm ?" They muttered, looking back at me as they were having their eyes at the door.
"I said that I was wondering why you are like this with me ?" I repeated my question that was something we already talk about between us but I wanted to know again.
"Why are you asking ?" They asked me back, crossing their arms.
"The Sonya Kuzmin I met in that interrogation who was rude, agressive....." I stopped myself, taking an quick look at them like if I was scanning them. "Are they the same person right here, right now ?"
"It's not because I'm rude that I can't be gentle." They responded, taking an half-annoyed voice. "I have a soft side too, you know." They pointed above their chest, just at their heart level.
"I'm not doubting that, now." I exclaimed to them and my words seems to have touched them as they brough an little smile on their face. "Tell me, how did you & Wraith met ?" I demanded after an few seconds of silence.
"I don't know if I should tell you this." They breathed, taking an look at the camera at their left.
"Stitch did say that you shouldn't talk about things but if you want to open yourself, do it." I adviced them, remembering his words to them, 2 days ago.
"Aw shit." They muttered, looking down at their feets. "Me & her, we met when I first joined Perseus in 1980." They started, taking an deep breath before looking up at me. "I will not say that it was love at first sight but we did start to...be closer enough, she was looking deeply alone at that time." They continued as in me, I was rethinking about the last months of 1980....'deeply alone'....with me starting to dream away....
"You were like recomforting her." I chuckled and they nodded.
"Yeah but now since April, she's not looking the same, you see ?" I nodded to them, biting my upper lip as they were sounding an bit sad. "Distant, jump mood from time to time." They added.
"And you were always here." I whispered.
"It was looking that it wasn't really enough, like she wanted more than just me." They told me, seeing an tear on their face, coming out of their right eye. "She's looking deeply into you but each time I want to know, she's rebuffing me."
"It's no-sense." I rolled my eyes around the cell, faking to be disturbed by that thing. "It's something that has been disturbing me since the moments she kissed me."
"Wait, she kissed you ?" They were sounding stunned, curious to me, making me realize that I shouldn't have really talk about this...until I slowly nodded.
"I don't know why, must be because of the things about me, things that isn't real." I expressed, moving away from the bed to get up. "Guess they want me to tell them more in those test." I muttered as I handed over my hands, knowing the procedure to get out.
"Yes, they want that." They breathed before they took handcuffs in their hands. "Seems that you're ready now." They said after handcuffing me.
"Guess that I don't have any choices." I joked, gesturing with my handcuffed hands to them.
"Come on, let's get going." They ordered, going back before we walk outside my cell.
This time, it was just them that were going to escort me into the place that Stitch & Freya want me to pass their 'test' and by looking at it, it seems that I was getting in the same way to the room the first test happened with Adler, meaning that I was maybe going to talk with someone else or worst, Adler again. I asked an few times to Sonya but they wouldn't respond at all at my questions, guess I will have to found out to myself.
My doubts were confirmed when we arrived in front of the same door of that interrogation room where I fought with Adler but this time, no one was here to greet us, not even an guard. Sonya decided to handcuff me at this moment and even if I would try to do something, I couldn't do it, I don't know the place too much because I don't even know where are we and I don't know where is Park.
"Is she ready ?" I was surprised when I heard Stitch's voice coming in with Freya at his side, next to him.
"She is." Sonya replied to my place, still holding me at my shoulders in case of anything.
"Good, another talk will happen today, as you maybe thought about it." Freya told me in an clear voice, moving to get her hand on the door handle.
"Don't tell me that he's behind his door." I demanded, remembering them of that fight days ago.
"Well, we will see how she will react." Freya said in an neutral voice as she started to open that door to let me discover.....
"Park ?" I whispered very silently, making sure that no one was hearing me as I entered the room.
She was here...in front of me...sit on the same chair Adler used. In terms of clothes, she was also like me : only an simple shirt and the pants she used back in that mission. To say....we were both alike in terms of everything : almost broken in the inside, only wanting to escape. She was looking down at her boots before she slowly looked up to see me, arriving me in the room. It's been almost an week that I didn't see her.
"B-Be-Bell ?" She exclaimed as we both know that we had to play an act together now.
"My god, Park, you're okay ?" I asked, very worried, moving to get sit on the chair I used before.
"Yeah...Yeah, I'm trying to be okay." She replied, feeling the sadness in her voice as she put her arms on the table. "They didn't hurt you ?" She demanded and I shook my head.
"No...and you ?" I asked back.
"Same, they said that it wasn't going to be useful if they hurt us." She responded, moving my arms too on the table.
"They want us to believe in their stupid vision." I exclaimed, looking at the mirror in the room, knowing that the trio were behind it and Park was doing the same. "Did they talk with you ?"
"Only one was coming from time to time and it was that Sonya." She explained, looking back at me. "It seems that they weren't like that, that day."
"We all getting surprised by that in those days." I told her with an smile, winking at her, an gesture for us both to start an normal conversation despite the whole situation. "How do you feel ?"
"I was starting to think that I will never see you again." She answered, still an part of sadness in her voice as with her left hand, she was trying to reach my right one. "I'm like back in hell but not alone."
"I know." I snorted, passing my left hand below my nose. "We both been through hell, we know what it's like."
"Yeah, I never wanted to live that again." She muttered, tears falling out of her eyes as we finally reach both hands together.  "It's hard each day but there's still something that hold you to not doing the unthinkable." She smiled at me. "You're the person that hold me."
"Yes, me too." I smiled back at her, our eyes both looking at our joined hands. "Park, I'm afraid." I told her, my voice breaking down by saying these words. "I'm afraid to lose you, to....I don't want to die or having you or my friends hurt."
"I'm afraid too." She repeated with the same tone as me, both realizing that we were thinking of the same thing. "Remember that night in the New Orleans ?" She questioned me and I nodded.
"Yes." I breathed with an little grin.
"We both said that we were scared for the future and we realized that....our love was going to help to go through everything." She said, remembering the talk we add that night....I could remember that conversation...."I've been always thinking about this for an long, long time."
"I didn't want to lose you and you....only you understand my feelings in the MI6." I expressed my pain to her, mentioning my life to her in an few words. "You're the only person that I'm in love." I affirmed as an little smile was beginning to form on her lips, knowing that I was saying the truth to her...like I always did.
"Before, I was thinking at first who was this woman that is now in front of me and...." She stopped herself to take an deep breath. "I'm realizing that I've been in love with you since the start, since the moment I saw you in my life."
"He said that it was impossible but we showed him that he was wrong about us...about me." I told her, referring to Adler himself and she was knowing about who I was talking about. "I love you, Park, always has been." I admitted as we start to slowly got together, seeing tears in our both eyes before we could make an kiss....something that I've been missing since days....giving me some hope.
"I love you too." She whispered after we broke the kiss, forehead to forehead, our hand on each other's shoulders before we moved back at our seats as the door was getting opened.
"Time's up, the test is finished." I could hear Stitch's voice coming inside the room and I looked around to see the trio arriving...with Freya, looking almost angry....
"Okay, time to get you back to your cell." Sonya started as they moved to get next to me.
"No !" Freya suddenly spoke up loudly, stopping everyone in their moves. "The test isn't finished....not for me." She exclaimed, looking between me & Park.
"What it is about ?" I asked her in an curious voice.
"Shut up !" Freya slammed her fists on the table, scaring me at my highest point inside of me as everyone was confused here, even Stitch. "Attach her to the chair with her handcuffs, Sonya."  She ordered to them in an clear voice and Sonya was so scared that they complied in an second, attaching me to the chair armrests with two handcuffs.
"Wraith, what are you doing ?" Stitch demanded as even himself was curious.
"Tell me, Park." She ignored his question as her look was on Park herself, moving slowly towards her. "How long this has been going on ?" She questioned her before she decided to slap her in the face.
"Hey !" I protested, trying to move but Sonya put their hands on my shoulder, avoiding to move. "Don't touch her !" I ordered but that was useless.
"Answer me, bitch !" Freya put her hands on her neck, holding it and almost starting to strangle Park. "Answer or I'll make your scar bigger and deeper." She threatened, even taking out her own knife to show it.
"Wraith, if you touch her, I'll kill you myself !" I told her in an angry voice as Stitch had to move to help Sonya to hold me.
"You took her away from me." Freya snorted, sounding more sad than angry. "You broke her enough, you lied to her." She added as she decided to punch Park who wasn't responding at all to her.
"Fuck you." It was the only thing that did go out of Park's mouth, determined to not say anything.
"Answer !" Freya repeated loudly as she was going to move her knife next to Park's scar....
"Freya, stop !" I ordered, my voice getting to get more broken and hearing her name...make her stop in her moves. "Please...I'm begging you, don't hurt her." I continued, starting to feel more tears coming out of my eyes....I wasn't Bell anymore.
"What did you say ?" Freya asked in an low voice, turning around to face me.
"I want you...to stop....I know..." I stopped myself, my eyes filled with tears until I looked at her straight in the eyes. "I know since 3 years." I revealed, Park looking shocked, Freya getting the knife out of her hand that went limp as Sonya & Stitch was removing their hands from me.
"Yirina..." Park whispered in an low voice as the trio was realizing everything.
"You....you knew ?" Freya demanded and I slowly nodded, still crying out my whole pain.
"It's been 3 years that I know what happened to me." I said, trying to look away from her but I couldn't. "I know about everything." I added before looking down in shame of myself to have played an act.
"Sonya....Stitch...." Freya started to say, sounding shocked until her bones. "Get....get Park back to her cell, I'm taking Yirina to hers." She ordered in an almost broken voice as the two start to move to get Park up, she was looking sad to me, having seen break in the inside. "Get up !" Freya expressed as she was removing my handcuffs before she forced me to get back up to leave the room.
I was still crying when we left that room but this time, Freya wasn't wondering what just happened like before, she just realized....that I lied to her....that I was just playing an act the whole time. I was redoubting about that moment and it just happened here, right now and like I doubted it, I wasn't able to contain the tears inside of me...tears that was still on my face when we got back into my cell.
"Three years ?" Freya removed herself from me as she almost threw me away on the bed. "You know about everything this entire time ?"
"Yes." I breathed, slowly sitting on the bed, ashamed of myself. "They told me about it....days before they could stop Perseus to use Greenlight." I explained.
"And instead, you could have come back here." She snorted, tears on her eyes too.
"I couldn't, Freya !" I spoke up before looking down at my feets. "Adler left me for dead at Solovetsky, I spent 3 years in an fucking coma in Moscow." I pointed at my scar on my head to her, I was angry and crying. "And even, I wasn't going to come back."
"You...you were aware of it in those calls you made to me, each time we saw each other in real." She exclaimed, leaning herself back against the wall.
"It was breaking me in the inside each time." I put my hands on my laps, seeing them trembling. "You know why I wasn't telling the truth ?" I asked her. "I was afraid like I have as been."
"You could have come back to me." She repeated again, almost pleading me to do that.
"It wasn't an option for me, I hate myself for working with Perseus for years without opening my eyes." I affirmed to her, looking back at her, meaning the seriousness of my voice. "And...no, it wasn't an option." I said again.
"You betrayed what we were standing for, you betrayed his ideals, Yirina." She told me as I narrowed my eyes to her, wondering if she was really the good Freya that I knew before.
"You betrayed me !" I whispered in an very serious voice as I decided to get back to lay down on the bed, looking at the ceilling, thinking about the whole fucked up situation right now before looking back to her. "You stole things from me, I was like an sister to you and what did you do ?" I demanded as she looked down at her feets.....
"It was more important than Perseus but instead, you betrayed me !"

Just A Babysitter. (Part Six.)
The Lost Boys x reader
Warnings: blood imagery, character death
Context: (Y/n) is woken by the sound of voices in the cave, one of which is very familiar.
A/N: I'm sorry that this is so short, but hopefully the next (final) part will be longer and better. 😊😊
Part One , Part Two , Part Three , Part Four , Part Five , Part Seven , Part Eight
Tumblr media
For what feels like the hundredth time in a row, I'm woken from my light sleep, conscience coming back to me instantly as I try to figure out what woke me this time. Blinking away the sleep in my eyes, I sit up slowly, cracking my neck, stopping suddenly when I hear something from the outside. I remain as quiet as possible, ears straining to catch whatever it was they heard before, confusion and fear rising in me when I manage to discern the sounds floating in from the main cave. Voices.
Biting my lip, I silently climb out of the bed, my pulse racing as I pull on my boots, my eyes still trying to adjust to the bright sunlight, unused to the change in light around me. Muscles tense, I creep to the entrance of my room, pressing my back to the side which isn't visible to the rest of the sunken hotel, a hand clasped over my mouth as I try to calm my erratic breathing, fear holding me in place as I listen to the rapidly approaching voices, finally able to recognise one as it calls put loudly to the others.
"Don't you touch her! You stay away from her!"
Michael.
Anger flares up in me at this, my body wishing it could reveal itself and confront the brunette, a sense of betrayal accompanying it as the other voices move about, the sound of footsteps echoing around the airy cave sounding along with them. I listen in to what they're saying, horror and panic encroaching on me when I figure it out, my brain trying to figure out what I can do to stop them, mostly coming up blank. Looking around, I take in the surroundings, doing my best to figure something out without being found myself, knowing the boys are only minutes away from being discovered.
As my eyes land on an old metal dustbin, a plan forms in my head.
Swiftly, I throw myself forwards, grabbing hold of the bin and throwing it as best as I can, wincing a bit as it crashes horribly loudly to the floor, continuing to make noise as it rolls to a halt, bouncing over the debris covering the floor. Without a second thought, I duck back into the doorway to my sleeping area, holding my breath as I wait for someone to react, knowing that at least the intruders will have heard the racket.
Nothing happens. For minutes, all is quiet, the only sound being that of someone entering the cave and leaving again a moment later, not giving the bin a second thought. The suspense has me on edge, my leg twitching nervously as it prepares to move, ready to make me sprint away from any trouble.
Eventually, I give in to my worry, emerging quietly from my hiding spot, looking around the hotel briefly before making my way to the entrance of the boys' sleeping area, crawling into it with ease. I navigate my way through out of memory, using the beams to aid my hurried crawl, my lip nearly bleeding with how hard I'm biting it, following the sound of the voices in the darkened space. A sharp cry of fear rents the air, before being cut off, as if someone covered their mouth, the sound spurring me on as I crawl at a faster pace, anxious to get there, hoping with all my heart that the boys heard the noise from the cave. My foot catches on something, slowing me down as I fight to shake it off, growling in frustration when it just gets more tangled; upon reaching down to free myself, I find the item to be an old net hanging off the beams, my foot wrapped tightly in it despite my best efforts to loosen it. Seconds later, I manage to shake it off, continuing on my way with a rising sense of urgency, terrified that I'm too late.
Finally, I emerge into the small, circular clearing they use as they're sleeping area, my eyes instantly finding one of the intruders, a young boy with an odd sense of fashion, a flashlight clasped in his hands, the beam of light facing upwards. As I move to grab him, pushing past my initial surprise, I hear the one thing I hoped I'd never have to hear: a scream of agony from one of the boys.
Looking up, I swiftly locate the shrieking, writhing mess of vampires, the youngest of which is bleeding and crying out in pain, hands clutching at his chest as he falls to the floor, two other boys following. Horror and shock burst into life within me, my knees buckling as I fall to the side of the fallen vampire, the contorted features only too familiar, his yellow eyes becoming dull as the screaming continues, his body tense under my hands as I try to calm him.
Marko. They killed Marko.
Above me, I hear David snarling something at the intruders - the murderers - before he drops to the floor, fangs bared as he chases them back into the tunnel, hissing at them as he goes. I stay with Marko, holding him close to me as he continues to twitch in my arms, his eyes and fangs fading as his conscience starts to leave him, grief and despair welling up in me even as tears start to spill over my cheeks.
"No, no, no, no! You can't die, please, don't die on me, Marko, you mean too much to me! Please! Don't go..." I start to beg, knowing my sobbing is fruitless as I bury my head into his jacket, ignoring the sticky blood that coats his chest, the vampire gasping beneath me.
"(Y-Y/n)..." He manages to murmur, before his eyes turn blank, his muscles going limp underneath my grip, his icy skin as lifeless as ever.
"No! Don't die, you can't die! Please, please...you can't...no..." I cry out, my voice laced with agony and pain as I clutch him closer to me, my body rising and falling erratically as I weep into the frigid chest of the blonde vampire. I don't notice as two others kneel beside me, their faces just as lined with grief as mine, tears already falling down their cheeks as they reach over to me, placing a hand on my back. Together, Dwayne and Paul hold me and their fallen friend, neither of them saying anything as I continue to plead and beg for this to be a dream, the weight of Marko in my arms all too real. At some point, David returns, determination hardening his resolve before it is softened again when he sees the three of us together, the vampire instantly coming over and kneeling in the gap between us, cradling Marko's head in his lap with a tenderness I've never seen him use.
It feels like hours before we speak again, David breaking the silence with a decisive tone.
"It was those kids from the comic shop and Michael's kid brother. They won't survive the night. We won't let them." His voice is low, broken up with emotion, tear tracks staining his cheeks as he looks at each of us in turn, his blue eyes filling with new pain when they lock with mine, his pale hand reaching out to grasp my own shaking one, "I promise."
"So do I." Dwayne agrees, the usually composed vampire openly allowing tears to spill down his cheeks, his dark eyes finding mine as well.
"A-and me." Paul echoes, quietly, the blonde as silent and still as I've ever seen him, his face showing more hurt than any of ours, the grief having numbed his usual cheery demeanor, Marko being his closest friend and confidant, even more so than Dwayne or I.
"Just make them pay for this." I spit out, my hurt giving my words venom.
"Oh trust me," David assures me, squeezing my hand, "We will."

Rewriting The CW's Kung Fu, Part 5: Act I
Tumblr media
To see where we began;
Part 1: Character Sketches
Part 2: The Pilot
Part 3: The Mythology
Part 4: Story Map
In this post, Act I, our goal is to find out who Nicky Shen is--and why we should care about her. But instead of just saying she's a good person who loves her family, what we want to do instead is to show this. And that's what we'll do in the first four episodes after the pilot.
Tumblr media
Episode 2: Patience
We're going to ease into a villain-of-the-week story for this episode. Our main plot revolves around Nicky wanting to fix her relationship with Ryan--but her older brother doesn't have time for her. When she asks Henry about any tips, seeing as he sees Ryan more than his own family now, Henry just tells her to help lighten Ryan's load.
Enter FAYE. She's a factory worker who can't afford to go to the hospital so Ryan has been treating her at the community center clinic. Nicky finds out about her situation, her goal to unionize with her co-workers at the factory, and the general sketchiness of her employer. Having a background in law, Nicky decides to help Faye out.
Nicky goes to Evan to ask for his legal advice. Evan is hesitant to help her--finally admitting that when Nicky disappeared, she broke his heart. That he's now with someone else. That he's engaged. And he doesn't think it's fair that he spend more time with Nicky. And then we reveal who Evan's fiancée is: SABINE, a classmate of theirs from law school.
Sabine is happy that Nicky is back. And she sees that Nicky is struggling to get back into the swing of things--so she's the one who decides to help Nicky out. Which forces Evan to spend more time with Nicky, making his old feelings for her come back again.
With Evan and Sabine's help, Nicky manages to find out Faye's workplace is supposedly in support of the workers' union. But when Nicky tries to make contact with the factory, she keeps getting turned away. When she finds out that Althea's fiancé, Dennis, has connections to the factory owner--Nicky gets them invited to a collection launch where she can confront the owner about his employee's health conditions. The owner, surprised at this, promises Nicky he will look into it. And that should be the end of it.
And then Faye is forced to go to the hospital. Nicky realizes that she was the one who put Faye in danger by being too aggressive with her approach. But when she tries to meet with the factory owner again, Nicky is surprised when she is faced by the owner's underling instead. The underling has been stealing money from the factory for years by cutting down on expenses that would ensure healthy conditions for the workers. And Nicky is ruining his operation. So now he will make Nicky, a woman who was already a ghost for the last three years, to really disappear.
This then gives us the opportunity to have Nicky be all kick-ass against the underling and his henchmen. She triumphs over them. She gets to help Faye. And she ends up at the community center clinic where Ryan has to treat her. Ryan knows what Nicky had done for Faye and he is grateful. And he is ready to fix their relationship again...
Because our B-plot for this episode revolves around Ryan meeting Joe at the hospital. They get to talking. They have spark. And Joe asks Ryan out. But Ryan can't answer because he's afraid that someone might see. That it would get to his parents. And so he hedges, saying he's a little busy right now. But now that he is embarking on a healing journey with Nicky, he might also be ready to start embracing his self again. So at the end of the episode, he tells Joe that he has a day off coming up. If Joe is still interested in going out with him.
And then, our C-plot is Henry investigating the painting with the marks from Nicky's burn scars. He can recognize some of the drawings--and he finally finds a book at the community center library about obscure myths and fairy tales. And he realizes that Nicky has touched the sword of Liang Dai-Yu, one of the eight most powerful weapons in China. Which he tells Nicky by episode's end.
Tumblr media
Episode 3: Choice
In this episode, Sabine reaches out to Nicky because Evan has a problem at work and he doesn't want to trouble Nicky--so Sabine is doing it for him. A Korean college student, CODY, had been framed for homicide, and while he had been adamant about his innocence in the beginning, he suddenly changed his mind and is now saying that he was responsible. Cody wouldn't talk to Evan anymore, but Sabine think Nicky might be able to get to him.
In this episode, Sabine reaches out to Nicky because Evan has a problem at work and he doesn't want to trouble Nicky--so Sabine is doing it for him. A Korean college student, CODY, had been framed for homicide, and while he had been adamant about his innocense in the beginning, he suddenly changed his mind and is now saying that he was responsible. Cody wouldn't talk to Evan anymore, but Sabine think Nicky might be able to get to him.
When Nicky meets Cody, she finds out that he's second-generation Asian American--and he doesn't want his parents to get involved in a media circus if he continues to fight. So he's settling before people start equating his name with being a murderer. Nicky then spends the rest of the episode finding proof that could exonerate Cody, including pretending to be a college student again (with Henry's help) and facing off with a fraternity who has powerful ties.
Our b-plot revolves our Evan and Sabine's relationship. He admits to Sabine that spending time with Nicky have made his feelings for his ex resurface. Sabine asks him if he wants to break their engagement off. Evan doesn't know how to answer. So Sabine answers for him: not knowing means breaking up.
Meanwhile, Ryan tells Nicky and Althea that he's gay. And they're supportive of him. When Ryan reveals that he has a date with Joe, Althea helps him go somewhere their parents definitely wouldn't see them. And Ryan is grateful. (We will introduce a recurring caller for Althea here. A number Althea doesn't block, but also never answers.)
Mei-Li and Jin get into an argument about Nicky's return. Mei-Li thinks Nicky should go back to college, and is ecstatic when she heads there (not knowing about the Cody situation). Jin is a little more scared of losing Nicky again.
And in the mythology side, while accompanying Nicky at the college campus, Henry stumbles upon the office of Professor Chau--who teaches Chinese art history. He tries to book an appointment but finds out that the professor is currently in Singapore for a symposium.
Tumblr media
Episode 4: Parenthood
Our episode begins with a confrontation between Nicky and Mei-Li. The latter wants to know what Nicky plans to do with her life, pushing her daughter to go back to school. To finish something. Nicky heads to the park to meditate--reminding her of her first year at the monastery, when Pei-Ling was helping her work her resentment out--
Which brings us to the main story. Nicky meets RONDA at the park when the latter tries to shoot a man in self-defense and fails. When Nicky intervenes, both the man and Ronda run away. When Nicky brings this up with Henry at the community center (because she's avoiding her mother both at home and at Happy Dumplings), Nicky finds out about the homelessness situation in San Francisco. She vows to look for Ronda, and to do what Pei-Ling had done for her: help her stop running.
Our b-plot is Jin and Mei-Li's continued argument about Nicky's future. Jin accidentally lets slip out that he actually found Nicky during her missing years. At a monastery. And that he his daughter happy. That it took being away from her family to finally make her happy. And he couldn't bear to be the one to ruin that happiness. Mei-Li realizes that this was when Jin told them to stop looking for Nicky. This makes Jin breakdown. He tells Mei-Li that he doesn't want them to push their daughter away again.
In the a-plot, Nicky finds out that Ronda is the victim of domestic abuse. That she isn't a runaway as much as she was thrown away by her mother's current boyfriend. Nicky promises Ronda that she will help, but Ronda warns her that DEREK has friends that could hurt Nicky. But seeing how Ronda worries about her mother has touched Nicky's heart. And when she visits Ronda's mother, she realizes that the woman is also making a sacrifice because she doesn't want to see Ronda hurt by Derek. Who she feels trapped by.
When Nicky resolves the case, via a kung fu badassery of course, Nicky makes a realization about the relationship of a parent and their child. She heads home to talk to Mei-Li and Jin. To be honest with them. (With Althea and Ryan present, of course.) Nicky tells them that she doesn't know what she wants in life, but she wants the opportunity to find herself--and not just follow someone else's dream. Jin embraces Nicky and says he just wants the best for his daughter. Mei-Li asks Nicky to be patient with her, and that she will try.
This will inspire Ryan to come out to this parents (next episode), and Althea becomes pensive too.
Meanwhile, in the mythology side of things, while Nicky watches Henry at the community center teaching out-of-home youths (where we meet ANDRE) non-lethal ways to defend themselves, she remembers Pei-Ling telling her how fear and anger come hand in hand--relating a story about her family, and how she lost touch with them as well. In this episode, Nicky will decide to look for Pei-Ling's family so she could tell them about what happened to Pei-Ling.
Tumblr media
Episode 5: Sanctuary
In the last episode of our first arc, Henry goes for center stage when he discovers that one of his students, ANDRE, is being vilified by the media as a dangerous delinquent after he was shot by the police. He asks for Nicky's help to prove Andre's innocence. In the course of Nicky helping Henry, we will discover Henry's past as someone who had to go through the system as a juvenile delinquent because his family wasn't part of the model minority myth, while also touching upon Jin and Mei-Li's beginnings as the owners of Happy Dumplings.
Ryan wants to come out to his parents, but things keep getting in the way. When Joe asks Ryan to stand with him at a rally to protest what was done to Andre, Ryan decides that he's finally speaking his truth--standing with Joe against Mei-Li's protests.
Althea finally decides to accept the call of the number that keeps trying to reach her. It's a former co-worker. She asks Nicky to come with her, and Nicky finds out that the former co-worker wants Althea to speak up about what happened to her at the company. That Althea was a victim of sexual harassment. That this was the real reason why she quit her job and not her engagement. But Althea also say she doesn't want to speak up against her former employer. Because she doesn't want Dennis to know. To see her as less than.
Meanwhile, Evan helps Nicky by looking for Pei-Ling's family. He discovers that she had two remaining relatives who are still alive: an uncle, and a sister. When he gives Nicky the news, he also gives her the sister's name: Zhang Zhi-Lan.
The episode ends with Zhi-Lan arriving in San Francisco. Setting up a home base. And showing that she already has two weapons at hand: the longsword of Liang Dai-Yu, and a dagger.
And this is where we stop for now. In the next post, we will discuss the next arc of Nicky's journey--which will now heavily revolve around the eight mystical weapons and the hunt for them.

Hot and Cold
Words: 4.626
Paring: Loki Laufeyson × reader
Warning: Accident in Mission, Dominion of fire and ice and unprotected sex scene. Internal ejaculation.
Tumblr media
Y/N didn't call the Avengers attention in a good way. It's not like she wanted to cause trouble in New York, but since she couldn't properly control her powers, she ended up being seen, initially, as a threat.
But even though Y/N sometimes froze some innocents in an attempt to catch the thieves or accidentally set off a diner, Y/N was called to be part of the Avengers.
It's an honor. That's what she thought. Working with the Black Widow and Captain America was a dream that Y/N had since she developed her pyrokinesis and cryokinesis powers.
In other words, it creates and controls not only ice, but also its complete opposite, fire. This was unusual even for mutants and this yielded many days of testing on Y/N on the part of Banner and Stark.
However, the lack of control that Y/N was not just something that worried her. She was insecure and most of the time Y/N felt out of tune with the other team members. It was too much power to control and learn to use, it was too much pressure for Y/N to handle.
--------
Y/N was alone at a diner table. She had just ordered a juice and the same came, but the warmth of Cuba was so strong that even if Y/N ordered the iced juice, it came almost at room temperature. Of course, this was not a problem for Y/N, because being a manipulator of ice and fire, it can freeze the juice at the temperature she wanted and without attracting attention.
"All right, what do you see?" Steve's voice came through Y/N's earpiece.
"Regular patrol cops. Few men, busy streets, yet not too noisy." Y/N consisted before taking a sip of her juice observing everything with description. "A good target."
"We're facing the biggest bank in Cuba, what does it mean?" Steve's question came as a teacher's and Y/N had to restrain herself so as not to turn her eyes.
"Cams." Y/N answered the obvious. "But that's not gotta stop him."
"Surely not, this guy isn't afraid to be seen." Steve agreed, seemed pleased with Y/N's comment.
"You see that SUV?" It was Natasha's turn to ask, she was at the diner across the street, also at an open-air table, just as Y/N was now.
"The red one? Cute." Y/N took another sip of her juice. Field recognition was the worst part of her training and that she could say for sure.
"That means it's private security. Which means difficulty for some people. These people are us." Natasha added.
"You know, with a snap of fingers, I can incinerate or freeze them?" Y/N asked looking at Natasha across the street and the two faced herself for a moment before Bucky finally spoke.
From above one of the buildings, Bucky was watching everything with Sam's support. "We've seen very well how your snap of fingers is effective, Y/N."
Y/N's right hand began to heat the juice unintentionally. "Are you gotta get into this things, Barnes? Shall I remind you of the Starks?"
It was Bucky's turn to get angry and growl.
"It's not helping, Bucky. Focus on the mission, you both." Steve scolded and Y/N practically growled.
A sound from a heavy vehicle caught Steve's attention and he had Sam check it out. With one of his drones, Sam scanned the old garbage truck that went straight from the bank and went to the big building at the end of the street.
"It's at its maximum capacity and the driver is armed." Sam said analyzing the scan, it left everyone on alert.
"They aren't attack the bank." Steve said and everybody went out where the truck was going.
Bucky ran to the car where Natasha also went and went out together. Sam went to Steve's meeting and took him flying to the scene while Y/N used her ice powers to glide down the floor and quickly go to the scene.
Steve and Sam were the first to arrive on the scene, there was already a small trail of destruction while Steve was recognizing how many were still there.
"Sam, I counted eight..." Steve said after he knocked down three men. Sam who was in the air, struck one with his feet and shot another. "I counted six..."
Men started shooting in their direction and Steve and Sam used their equipment to protect themselves. But soon some shots were fired and the men fell dead on the ground.
"You counted better, Steve." Bucky provoked him as he approached his friend.
"Now there are six..." Natasha said accompanying Bucky's quick walk.
The loud sound of a rifle shot echoed and the gun was flying all the way to the team's direction. Steve automatically pulled Natasha under his shield while Sam and Bucky protect themselves from the attack behind the Hawk's wings.
But the shot never came, because the gun was frozen in the air and then fell to the ground, undoing it into little pieces.
"I thought you all were more attentive..." Y/N commented, serious and with her ice powers she create ice stakes and throw against the enemies.
Sam's drone flew over the building while they were protecting themselves from the shots and managed to find the location of the people behind it.
"Romlow is on the eighth floor." Sam announced to Steve and the same has already turned to Y/N.
"How we train, Y/N!" Steve ordered it.
With both hands and using all the concentration he could, Y/N created a pillar of ice for Steve to enter the building directly on the eighth floor.
The team went into confrontation with Romlow, but unfortunately he managed to steal the bio weapon and try to escape with it. In the midst of the crowd they parted and the whole team also separated to try to capture what was with the weapon since there were not many men left. Sam and Natasha went west, Bucky to the north while Y/N and Steve went east behind Romlow
Y/N went into a melee fight against Romlow, but he was clearly stronger than her in this category and ended up tipping her off. But he before he could give a fatal blow to it, Steve came in and knocked him down with a punch. The two began to fight eagerly. Steve had lost his shield in the fight process, but didn't stop tearing down Romlow, several times.
However...
"They'll coming after your little friend, Bucky..." Romlow said provocative when he was visibly impossible for him to win Steve. "They'll frying his brain like they did in the last 70 years..."
Steve, who until then held Romlow by the collar of his clothes, lost a bit of firmness and that made Y/N apprehensive.
"And when they get to him, he'll forget about you again, because there's nothing left to remember!" Romlow said showing the grenade in his hand.
Steve automatically walked away and Y/N took her front so that Romlow detonated the grenade. Because of her pyrokinesis, she managed to restrain the fire from the bomb blast. Y/N only didn't count that Romlow, still carbonized, would make one last act of cruelty throw another grenade toward the innocent population of Cuba who watched frightened the situation.
Again Y/N tried to use her ice powers, but it didn't work out. The bomb exploded and in an attempt to freeze the fire, Y/N ended up doing the opposite and the fire spread, it ended the lives of many innocent people.
Y/N didn't know how to do it, she reduced Romlow to ashes while Steve was trying to help save as many people as possible from the fire. Bucky and Sam arrived next to help, then came the firefighters, finalizing the mission of the Avengers.
Still on the way to where they had landed the Quinjet, they were all in an absurdly uncomfortable silence. Y/N looked at the landscape from outside the car just like everyone else, or maybe not all of them.
"Really, we're not going to talk about what happened?" Bucky was the first to talk.
"There's not much to talk about, Bucky." Steve said without taking his eyes off the road.
"Yes, there is, Steve. She burned over 100 innocent people and you're not going to say anything?"
"It was an accident!" Y/N defended herself, not that she was in the mood to talk about it. She kept serious and looking into the landscape without paying attention in Bucky.
"Bucky!" Natasha scolded him, but he turned to Y/N looking from the front passenger seat.
"A fatal accident. If you had trained your powers better, you might have prevented it."
"You're the last person who can judge me, HYDRA Pinocchio." She lifted her right hand and a flame appeared in her palm. "Now shut your damn mouth before I fry you too." Y/N added, and as much as Barnes was ready to Retruffle, Steve made him sit right on the bench.
"That's enough! The mission didn't end the way we hoped, but it's over. Don't prolong that anymore." Steve said, stern and they both crossed their arms like two angry kids.
That failure was all Y/N didn't need. Incinerating people wasn't in her plans when she woke up in the morning.
Y/N was the first to leave the Quinjet as soon as it landed. As soon as she entered the compound, Y/N went to her own room where she intended to be isolated. She didn't turn on the TV, didn't turn on the radio, didn't touch her phone, because Y/N knew she'd be in every kind of media her failure as an Avenger.
The only thing she did was climb into her bed and grab her knees. Y/N still heard in her head the screams of the burning people while she could not change from fire to ice. That's the enraged, she hated not being able to control her powers properly and so ending innocent people dying.
A knock on the door caught Y/N's attention, there was Steve still in his Captain's uniform. Y/N diverted her attention to the window and sighed. The frustration of knowing that he had disappointed Captain made Y/N even more upset with herself.
Steve sat next to her in bed and touched her hand. "Don't cover so much of yourself..."
"Don't touch me! I don't want to hurt you!" Y/N said she was trying to loosen her hand. Steve held her hands and looked at her. "You're not going to hurt me, see?" He raised his hands together and no fire.
"You must be disappointed in me, won't you?" Y/N asked, afflicted, finally looking into Steve's blue eyes. "I tried to stop Romlow, but I ended up burning innocents in the process..."
"It's not your fault, there was no way you could imagine he had two grenades." Steve lowered his gaze and released Y/N's hands. "Romlow said those things about Bucky, and suddenly, I was 16-year-old Steve in Brooklyn." Steve sighed and looked at Y/N, she had lowered her gaze too and now looked at her own hands. "I never expected you to use both of them at the same time with so little training time. We don't even know if it's possible... "
"But..." Y/N would argue, but Steve interrupted her. "I already said, don't cover so much of yourself, with more training you can control it. "
"How many people gotta die there?" she asked about dropping Steve's hands. "I don't wanna hurt anyone else, Cap. So... I think I'd better stay in the compound while I try to find a way to switch. It's safer..."
Steve sighed giving up for an hour and agreed. Y/N was already determined not to act, unless it was extremely necessary or when she was in complete control of her powers.
Days later, Y/N still didn't have the guts to go out on missions and because she refused to leave the compound, the security secretary, Ross, understood that Y/N was in some kind of house arrest, so he didn't arrest her for what happened.
It was Y/N sitting in the garden, it was the maximum limit that the secretary had free air tax to Y/N within the premises of the complex. She looked at her right hand and she began to light up, then ignited her and a flame began to spread as if she was burning her, but Y/N felt nothing. She made the fire go out and with the same hand tried to create ice, but could not.
Y/N went on with it until the thunderously loud sound followed by a colorful light came to reach the garden, meters ahead of Y/N. She rose immediately, but remained standing where she was while she saw the strong light burn a circle on the earth and gradually the other Avengers left the complex, standing beside her.
"Looks like you'll finally meet Thor." Banner commented when he put himself next to Y/N.
She said nothing, just watched and breathed deep. One more to disappoint.
When the light subsided there were two men in the middle of the burnt-out Earth circle and they began to walk towards them. One was Thor, pompous and with his blond hair and short, he walked with confidence and with a huge smile on his face. The other was dark and Y/N didn't recognize him at first, he didn't seem comfortable to be there and so walked slower and with less haste than Thor.
"It's good to have you back with us, Thor." Natasha commented as the tallest approached and greeted everyone. "I just can't say the same about your brother..."
"Nonsense, Loki is learning not to be so selfish... Please give him a vote of confidence." Thor said greeting Banner with a strong embrace.
The others did not seem comfortable with it, but by Thor they decided to accept to give Loki a chance. Now when Thor saw Y/N, he looked at her with doubts.
"And you are...?"
"Y/N..." Y/N responded a little intimidated by the enormous man in front of her. "I'm relatively new around here..."
"It is a pleasure to meet you, young Lady Y/N..." Thor said and soon entered the complex with the other Avengers.
While everyone was away, Y/N stayed behind with Loki who watched her from the feet to her head, jerking her lips while analyzing her. Y/N was somewhat intrigued by his constant gaze and returned to sit on the grass. Soon Loki approached and lowered the front of Y/N, making her more intrigued.
"What are you so special about getting into my brother's super-gifted group of friends?" Loki asked curious, even if he had a smile playing on his lips.
Y/N spoke nothing but raised her right hand in front of her face and Loki's. And with that hand she created a strong flame of dense and very red fire.
"I can control ice too, but I can't make the transition from one element to the other yet." Y/N said looking at the fire.
"Wow! That is... Amazing!" Loki commented by trying to touch the flame and removed his hands the instant it burned.
"It would be better if I could control..."
Y/N's frustrated gaze intrigued Loki and, as strange as it seemed to him, Loki settled next to Y/N.
"It is a matter of improvement and this comes with training." Y/N kept staring at the fire in her hands and laughed Unbeliever. "You spoke like the Captain now."
Loki twisted his nose with the comparison, but he didn't say anything. A newcomer doesn't have much right to say anything, especially when he was taking refuge.
"I'm a freak even for my own kind..." Y/N commented frustrated when she finally extinguished her hands. Such a commentary caught Loki by surprise. "I practice, I study about pyrokinesis, about cryokinesis... But since I'm the only one on the planet that can manipulate both elements, I have to figure out how to control it myself..."
"Maybe you just needed someone to understand you..." Loki said with a softer tone in his voice, there was no sarcasm there.
For the first time in more than 1500 years of life, Loki was being entirely sincere. He gently held Y/N's right hand and gave her a kiss over her fingers. She was blusher and instinctively her hand warmed, almost burning Loki's hand.
He released Y/N's hand quickly for it and instead of fighting with her, he began to laugh. It was the beginning of a friendship between the two... Or something else.
Six months have passed since the arrival of Thor and Loki. And as much as Loki found a lot of tedious things, he learned to appreciate some things from Earth. One of those things was Y/N's company. Since they met, Loki is almost always with her.
Y/N understood the motives of everyone in being insecure with Loki, but for some reason, with her Loki lowered the whole cynical wall that had built in front of the others. He smiled cheerfully, had fun with her and helped her control her powers.
With a very rudimentary method, Loki made Y/N able to change the elements in the same hand and almost use both elements at the same time. This made Y/N hopeful of being able to finally get back to work properly this time, so much so that when she realized she could make the exchange with more freedom, Y/N asked the captain to integrate it again into the new missions.
The relationship between Loki and Y/N was not only in friendship in those six months. Loki learned that the more time he spent with a girl as inconstant as Y/N, the more he fell in love. After almost three months of living with each other, just as friends, he finally broke the pride barrier and declared himself to Y/N after one of the trainings.
She was shocked to hear about his feelings, but as Y/N also fell in love with Loki, it was inevitable that they would enter into a relationship.
On any day, Loki enters his room ready to rest. He had come out on his first mission with Thor and Barnes, and now he understood why everyone came back extremely tired after they left and battled. And to his surprise, Y/N was in his room, lowered in front of his bookshelf. She was wearing a small shorts, a big shirt that almost covered the shorts and barefoot. Y/N looked at him as soon as the door opened.
"Oh, you're back!" Y/N excried and stood up. Loki arched an eyebrow and went to her. "What are you doing here?"
"I... I missed you, so I came to read one of your books to soften." Y/N confessed and Loki came to the ruborize.
Never in his life did he feel so important to anyone besides Fregga. Y/N smiled at Loki and he couldn't stop the smile. He closed the door, and it was up to her whom he kissed fondly, matched likewise.
To relieve some of the stress and enjoy a little time together, since Y/N would be the next to go on a mission the next day. Loki chose a book on his bookshelf to read it together.
Together they settled in bed, Y/N laid her head on Loki's chest as he read aloud to her. It was wonderful to hear the story told by Loki's voice. Exciting until...
When the story's over. Loki closed the book with one hand and left on the nightstand.
"You read so well... I like to hear you reading." Y/N confessed to stroking Loki's face.
Loki gave a malicious smile and stole a time-consuming and warm kiss from Y/N. She corresponded in the best way she could, she did not expect a kiss like that and Loki's hands stroking her by the waist, pulling her closer already said a lot of what he wanted with his girlfriend.
When the kiss was over, Loki's eyes were pure lust. Y/N felt a shiver running her spine, but it was a good chill, made her smile.
"Do you like my voice? "Loki asked, the voice a little more hoarse and laden with desire. Y/N stated with her head, slipping her hands to his neck. "I like it a lot."
"You haven't heard her in a more sensual way, have you?" Loki asked, provocative, descending his hands to Y/N's bare thighs.
She already had her body in hot, not literally. Still panting, Y/N climbed on Loki's lap and practically devaged him with his eyes.
"I'm anxious to hear..." Y/N's voice was pure desire and the two finally surrendered.
As they kissed, Loki began to take off his coat, soon after it was Y/N taking off her shirt.
Loki ended the kiss and descended his lips to Y/N's still-covered breasts. He removed her bra and started sucking on the nipple while using his hands to rub Y/N's hip against her own. Y/N signed by the feeling of Loki's waking erection between her legs and rushed into taking off her bra as quickly as possible.
Loki laid her down in bed and stood over her, kissing her again and he massaged Y/N's breasts with both hands, making the woman sigh during the kiss.
But Loki needed more, Y/N also needed more. Loki rose from the bed and, once standing, he took off all his clothes. While Loki undressed himself, Y/N also took advantage of what she had left of her clothes.
Y/N went to the edge of the bed where Loki also approached, he kissed her again. A more warm kiss while Loki tried to pass on all of his feelings to Y/N, but without leaving the desire they felt sideways and he transmitted all of it by his touches. Loki's hands held Y/N's hips and pulled her out of bed.
Loki ended the kiss and turned her back on him, surprising Y/N. The kisses before fallen were to Y/N's neck and now she also felt the erect penis of Loki rubbing her buttocks.
"You wanted to hear my voice, didn't you?" Loki asked almost in a whisper and Y/N shudced in her arms, agreeing with her head. She had no strength to answer. "Because you will only hear me and feel, but you will not see me..."
Loki laid Y/N in bed and imbeded her hips carefully. Every move of Loki was delicate, as if she could break to a harder touch--indeed she could, since he was a Jotun.
Y/N cannot contain a groan in anticipation when the glans of Loki swiveled her vagina, but did not enter. But when he finally penetrated her, Y/N arched her back, feeling Loki's chest touching her back.
Loki's movements began slow and sensual, came along with the groans of Loki's satisfaction. Those hoof moans right at the foot of Y/N's ear along with the delightful sensation of him coming in and out of her made her drop a moaning. She needed more, she wanted to feel more like Loki.
Y/N chiped and gasped before taking a breath and finally talking. "More.... Loki, more... Hmmm..."
"You want some more?" Loki asked in a hoarse whisper between his groans and that made Y/N even more ecstatic.
"Oh, yes! Please, fuck me!" Y/N asked and continued to moan.
Given his girlfriend's requests, Loki moved away a little and holding Y/N by the hip and with faster and stronger moves, Loki made Y/N delify even more.
The bed began to creak as the movements got faster. The high groans of the two showed to themselves how much they were delivered to each other, how much they were passionate for each other.
Loki loved to feel Y/N pushing his own hip against his in search of more. He loved the way she gaily and that ironically she was almost burning him when he was almost freezing on the inside.
Loki felt his climax approaching, Y/N was already close to her orgasm as well. Loki's big hands went to Y/N's shoulders and firmed there, and with the pleasure growing for him, he made Loki start to rush against her with more brusquely, almost howling with pleasure when her orgasm came.
Y/N turned her eyes to pleasure by feeling the icy jets of Loki on her buttocks and fell on the bed, panting and without strength. Loki lay beside her, as weary as, panting he pulled her to her lap and embraced her.
"I don't know if I can go on a mission tomorrow." Y/N commented and Loki laughed.
"So stay... Ask Maximoff to take your place. " Loki suggested and Y/N lifted her face to look at Loki.
"I don't think the captain's going to accept that..." Y/N said and received the mumps of Loki as an answer.
They stayed a few moments just enjoying each other's affection before finally falling asleep.
The next day very early, Y/N met Steve, Bucky and Sam for a mission in Germany. They were all on their way to the Quinjet, all with their uniforms and heavily equipped. Steve was ahead with Sam, the two seemed committed to the Bucky mission was a little further behind and Y/N behind them.
She noticed Bucky looking at her a few times over her shoulders. First Y/N thought it was some silent complaint that she was walking slower, but when she squeezed the step and put herself next to Bucky, she could see a malicious smile on his face and it puzzled her.
"What's wrong?" Y/N asked, confused. Bucky kept his eye on the Quinjet where Sam and Steve were already climbing. "I always hated having neighbors, you know?"
"I don't understand."
"Oh, you don't understand?" Bucky laughed and made her stop him. "More.... Loki, more... Hmmm..." Bucky pretended to moan is Y/N turned red and all in flames at the same instant.
"You..."
"Well, I'm a neighbor of Loki's room has its disadvantages." Bucky said provocative. "I didn't know you was so noisy when you were going fuck someone..."
Bucky was going to keep teasing, but Y/N acted faster. She made a layer of ice grow from her feet to Bucky's calf and ran to the Quinjet, the fire in her body went out when she climbed on the ship, but she was still blushing red.
"What's that? Anyone in the compound heard you!" Bucky's screams left Y/N even more embarrassed, she looked at Steve and Sam to make sure what Bucky said.
The fact that Steve blushing and diverting the look and Sam smiling maliciously for her left Y/N even more embarrassed. But soon she began to burn again.
"Oh, don't you bother me either. You going to say you don't have sex?" Y/N accused her of rage and pointed to Steve. "You can't judge me, Cap, I've heard very malicious noises from your room and it wasn't your voice there."
"No exposing the others! Focus on the Mission!" Steve sentenced to go to the pilot's seat under the laughter of Y/N and Sam.

On Board The Quinjet, The Hulk Gets A Call From Black Widow Asking Him To Turn Back But Instead He Decides To Go Off On His Own To Take A Nice Vacation In Sakkar As Vision Destroys The Last Ultron Minion, Destroying Ultron Once And For All...
And With Everything Done, Hawkeye Decides To Retire From The Avengers To Spend Time With His Family While Tony Builds A New Training Facility/Alternate HQ For The Avengers Where They Can Train...
But Unfortunately It's Going To Have To Be Without Thor (Who Is Going Off To Solve The Mystery Of Who Is Making The Infinity Stones Appear Out Of Nowhere) And Tony (Who Is Going Spend More Time With Pepper And Build Her A Log Cabin) But Just Because The Team Is Down A Few Members It Doesn't Mean That They'll Be Short On Team Members....
Nope, Not On Your Life As Scarlet Witch, The Vision, Falcon And War Machine Join The Team As New Avengers...
Sadly, There's No End Credit Scene But There Is A Mid Credits Scene Which Sees Thanos Grabbing The Infinity Gauntlet And Deciding To Take Matters Into His Own Hands...
And That's Avengers: Age Of Ultron And...It's Okay...
While The Action Scenes Are Great, The Villain Is Good And There Is Loads Of Character Development Throughout The Movie, The Color In Some Of Those Fight Scenes Are Not Good Especially The Ones In Africa, Having Both Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver As Bad Guys Was Completely Pointless (Yes, I Know In Their Comic Book History They Were Bad Guys Before They Became Good Guys But Without Magneto And The Brotherhood That Part In Their History Is Pointless)...
There Are More Reasons Why I Don't Like This Movie But I Feel Like I've Been Writing This Review Forever And I Just Want To End It Also I Can't Think Of Any Other Reasons Right Now So, For This One I Would Say Skip It But I Honestly Don't Know If It's That Bad To Skip So I'll Leave This One Up To You Guys....
Till Next Time, This Is Duke, Signing Off...

Don't Prompts: 14. Don't hide it
A huge thank you to the workshop group @frangipanidownunder, @2plumsandagherkin, @how-i-met-your-mulder, @scapegrace74-blog, @emilysim, @myownsuperintendent for their comments and help! I went with the change and I’m not sure it works? You all be the judges :)
The first time Mulder touches Scully'spregnant stomach it's an accident. As much as he can't pretend that she's withchild, his mind blocks out the challenges this fact provides. They're in hiskitchen. Nothing has changed here except the level of cleanliness. He opens acupboard to get a glass. His mouth is dry and in desperate need of water.Scully is telling him something; she sputters words he can't comprehend. Hehasn't told her, doesn't know how, but he's happy she's here. He's happy to behearing her voice. The real one and not the one in his dreams. Mulder doesn'tremember much from his abduction except the blinding pain. It feels like amovie, sometimes. Rapid sequences of action exploding in front of his eyes whenhe does remember. One thing he is certain of, though; has kept like a talismanin the palm of his hand, and that is Scully's voice. It drowned out the painthen and now. It heals his gaping wounds.
Mulder gulps down two glasses of icycold water before he leaves the glass in the sink. He stares at it for a momentfeeling out of place. This is his apartment, or it should be. It doesn't feellike it. He feels like a guest here. Just a visitor. Mulder turns around andthere she is. They've been in this kitchen many times before. Not as often asthey've been other places, but they've been here. This time, though, it's asthough there is not enough space. He bumps against her stomach and gasps. Itbounces against him like an inflated balloon. They both stand still, too still.Mulder is looking down at her, at her stomach. He's never allowed himself to lookat it like this. Only out of the corner of his eye, like a guilty pleasure. Nowhe is confronted with it. He still feels it, a phantom trace against his ownstomach.
Before today all he's dared to do iswatch her out of the corner of his eye. It wasn't a conscious choice; he knowsthat she knows that he's thinking about it. The baby. His mind wanders thepaths of why, of how and when. The three big questions. He's asked her once howshe's feeling, a habit. The question tumbled out of his mouth as they werewalking towards his apartment. Scully, her face flushed, her body heavy andslow, turned to him, mumbled an I'm fine, Mulder. Just like always. So he keepsthe charade up; he keeps swallowing the questions he has like the pills shehands him on a daily basis. Every once in a while his eyes will linger on hers.Everything about her is softer these days. Her eyes, her face. Is her skinsofter, too? He wonders what her silky skin would feel like against his own, rough and scarred. Would he even be able to feel it at all?
He can look at her, even pretend that nothinghas changed. That he hasn't been dead for three months. That he hasn't beengone. That she isn't… that's something he can't pretend. Her pregnancy. He isnot sure he wants to and so he watches her; out of the corner of his eye. Whenhe allows himself to get lost in the depth of her eyes, a soft greenish bluethese days, where hints of terror and pain sometimes shimmer through, hepretends that they're back where they've barely started. Old friends, newlovers. Then, as sure as the sun rising and setting, he will catch a glimpsewhen she's in the corner talking to someone else, when she's going about herdaily life; her belly protruding, reminding him. The proof of time passed. Ofthe fact that life moved on without him. Now he adds another moment, anotherlayer.
"I'm sorry." Scully says andher voice cuts through him, the pain of her disappointment cutting deeper thanmetal blades. He knows a thing or two about these, now. But there's no way totell her that he's not sorry. That she of all people should know that sometimeshe needs a push into the right direction. She doesn't move and neither does he.He can't. He's caught in this moment now; there is a decision to be made. Whodoes he want to be as a partner, a man and a… father? He can be the guy whokeeps watching her from a distance. His hand twitches. Every nerve in hisfingers is tingling with anticipation. Fear, too. But all he has to do is reachout.
Scully told him she's prayed a lot.Mulder has not. He doesn't pray; his faith is in the truth. Once, a lifetimeago, Mulder told Scully that the truth was in her. His eyes are on her belly, round with life. This is the truth, he realizes. The only one that matters. Hishand trembles as he closes the distance between them. The first sensation ismerely the feel of warm cotton under his skin. He presses softly against herand there it is again. Like a balloon that's stretching against him. His mouthopens in awe but there are no words. He'll have to learn new words, a newlanguage, to describe any of this. His hand begins to wander, wants to coverevery inch of new territory. A second hand joins in and he feels something, agentle shaking and he looks up into Scully's face, his hands still firmlyplanted on her belly.
"Mulder." His name leaves herlips as a prayer; a happy one, answered. He nods, though he is not sure heunderstands. "There are so many things I want to tell you. So many thingsI.." She trails off, tears dripping from her eyes and onto her cheeks. Shewipes them away quickly, angrily.
"Don't hide it." Mulder takesher hand into his. "Don't hide it from me. Any of it. I have missed somuch already, Scully. I don't want to miss a single thing.
"I'm just crying, Mulder. You'veseen me cry before. It's the hormones, it's-"
"It's you. You don't need to hideyour tears from me, Scully. Ever. I can only imagine how many times… when Iwas…" Mulder swallows. Who dried her tears when he was gone? When he wasburied? He swallows again; the bitter bile of time lost, of pain endured."I'm here now. I'm not planning on going anywhere." To prove it heputs his hands back on her stomach, fascinated by it. "Is it supposed tofeel like a small balloon?"
"More like basketball."Scully chuckles.
"It feels amazing, Scully."Mulder tells her with his hands firmly planted on their miracle inside of herand his eyes on hers. "I wish I could have been there for every kick. ButI will be now." His voice is pure determination.
"I was never really without you,Mulder." And he knows it. He feels it; feels it in the soft kick againsthis hand. His breath catches; his child. Their child. "Junior here kept mecompany. Kept me awake at night. Reminded me to eat and take good care ofmyself." She smiles at him through her tears; the sun breaking throughheavy rain clouds. Looking at her, seeing love, he wonders how he ever couldhave doubted it; his place in her life, here.
"I'm known to keep you awake atnight," Mulder admits, stroking her belly. The first time may have been anaccident, but the next million times he touches her stomach, any part of her,are a decision, a deliberate one. "But I think you're usually the one toremind me to take care of myself. Not the other way around."
"Hm, I guess the baby gets somethings from me, too, then." They smile at each other, lost in this momentof blissful peace, of being connected. Tomorrow, even later today, they will bechallenged again. They will have to fight for moments like this one. Mulder isready. He is back. He is going to fight for Scully and their baby. His family. He is done watching from the sidelines.

It’s Broken
A/N: Post S1E3, pre S1E4. John’s POV.
Ao3 | FF.net
John stops on the landing of the stairs, looking down into the common area of the Mutant Underground HQ. It’s after sunset, and people are spread out around the HQ, winding down from the long day and the unexpected excitement.
The Strucker kids are sprawled out on a couple couches, Lauren reading a tattered copy of Watership Down while Andy messes with some magnets. Those were Lorna’s, a small collection that she used to sit there and play with on evenings like this. She would send them flying around the room, darting them into small spaces and back out again, perfecting her skills. Maybe Andy can use them for now until she gets back, practice breaking things apart by focusing on pulling apart the magnetic connection.
Lorna wouldn’t mind.
Caitlin isn’t far away from her kids, but she’s reading something on one of the few tablets that the Underground has. John hopes she’s reading up on the few articles that are out there about mutant medicine. He won’t lie, they could use a medic around here. That doctor over in Decatur is good, but he’s far away from HQ, which doesn’t work for emergencies like they had with Clarice.
Speaking of Clarice, she’s not in the common area. He’s not sure where she’s gotten off to, but Zingo is missing too. Maybe they’re off together. He hopes she’s okay…they still haven’t talked about what Dreamer did. They need to, he knows they do, but he assumes that Sonia will tell her. She will…won’t she?
John leans on the banister, fingers tightening on the railing. Five-year-old Riley is sitting in Dreamer’s lap, playing with her bright red hair, trying to braid it but instead turning it into a thick tangled mess. This is a normal scene, it’s common, but now something clicks in the back of John’s mind. Something he has been wondering about for a while but told himself it was stupid. That Sonia wouldn’t do that, not when he told her not to, but…
He thinks about Clarice, about the strange trusting look in her eyes, about how Sonia had tried to excuse it. About how Sonia did the exact opposite of what he asked her to do. He thinks about Riley’s sleepwalking habit and how it had suddenly gone away only to come back recently.
“Riley,” he says, his voice cutting across the common area, “Come here.” It’s not really a request, it’s an order, and everyone knows it. Riley tenses and looks up at him with wide eyes, and he regrets the tone. He’s not angry at her, but he can tell she thinks he is. But behind her, Sonia loops an arm around the girl, holding her in a quick tight hug, meeting John’s eyes. She already knows why he wants to get Riley away from her.
“Please,” John says, gentler, as he looks at Riley. As she wriggles out of Sonia’s hold, John frowns at Dreamer. She frowns back.
John turns his attention to the five-year-old as she hurries up the stairs, her wings fluttering with worry.
“Did I do something wrong?” she asks, one hand looping around a stair bannister. Her gaze darts to the railing John is clenching and her eyebrows jump up her forehead. “You’re breaking it.”
John instantly lets go and silently curses himself and the cracks in the wood that hadn’t been there a minute ago. He hasn’t broken something like that in a long time, he’s always so careful. John sighs, his head hanging forward. He’s not himself tonight. He’s shaken. There’s a lot going on lately, and he misses Lorna, his partner in leading this whole thing. Marcos is too focused on saving Lorna to step into her spot, Sonia isn't…she’s not the leader type. Sage doesn’t want to lead, neither does Shatter. Without Lorna, John is trying to keep this place together the best he can on his own, and he’s worried he’s not doing it right. Maybe he’s screwing up.
Every time he tells someone to do something, they do the opposite. Great leadership right there. Lots of respect.
A small hand slips into his, and Riley’s tiny fingers squeeze his. “It’s okay. It’s not bad.” She’s leaning forward, poking at the railing with her other hand. Her smile is quick and sweet and hesitant as she gives his hand another squeeze. “It’s not bad,” she says again, obviously wanting to comfort him. Even after seeing him splinter the hardwood railing, she's not afraid of his strength. “Are you mad?”
John brushes his hand over Riley’s hair. “Not at you.”
“You okay, Johnny?”
Sonia puts one foot on the landing and stops. Without realizing what he’s doing, Johnny takes a step forward, putting himself between Sonia and Riley. It’s an unconscious movement, but it says exactly what he wants to tell her.
He glances back over his shoulder at Riley, who is watching the two of them, her dark eyes confused. She can tell something has changed, that it’s not the same anymore.
“Time to go get ready for bed, kiddo.”
Normally she might put up a fuss, but she nods. “Can someone tell me a story?” she asks both of them, dark eyes flicking from one to the other.
“I will later,” John says, looking at Sonia.
Riley’s wings pull in tight, tucking around her like a cloak. She does that when she’s upset. She hugs John’s side and then takes off, heading for the room she and couple other kids share.
Sonia steps onto the landing and gets close, too close for him at the moment. “What was that about?”
He nods up the stairs, and they move away from the others, ducking into an alcove. They need to have a discussion, right now, but he doesn’t want to embarrass her in front of everyone by confronting her in the common area. He crosses his arms over his chest before locking eyes with her. “Did you use your ability on Riley? Is that why she stopped sleepwalking?” She’s silent for too long, and John sucks in a breath. He doesn’t clench his fists, but his jaw tightens. “Damn it, Sonia. You said you wouldn’t.”
“She wasn’t sleeping!” Sonia hisses, her eyes narrowed, “Those nightmares…it wasn’t fair, Johnny.”
John holds up a hand. “That wasn’t your choice to make. We agreed that it would be better for her to get past it naturally. We all did.” The two of them, Marcos, Lorna, Sage, a few others. It had been a team meeting on how to help Riley, and Sage had said the odds were better for Riley in the long run if she got past it without Sonia’s help.
And Sonia had gone against all of that.
“She’s just a little girl, and I wasn’t going to let her just suffer like that,” Sonia said, her eyes blazing, “She was so tired, you remember.”
He did. He remembered Riley falling asleep in the middle of the day, dark circles under her eyes, her tired stare. He remembered scooping her up and walking the then four-year-old around the HQ, trying to get her to sleep without nightmares. He had been up with her so often, trying to steer her back to bed, trying to keep her calm…He had hoped that she was getting better. It had seemed like she was.
“I knew I could fix it. I just gave her a few dreams every now and then, just little things. It didn’t hurt her.”
“It was temporary,” John said, shaking his head, “It was never going to work forever.”
“I knew that,” Sonia said, “But it helped her to sleep again.”
“For a while.” John rubs a hand over his mouth, lost for words again. “Have you done it to me?”
“What?” Sonia looks wounded, like he had hit her. “Johnny. Of course not.”
He nods, suddenly tired. So tired. He doesn’t know whether to believe her or not. He wants to believe her.
But Clarice’s face flashes in his mind. Snarky Clarice with her trust issues suddenly rushing into his arms…
He wants to believe Sonia. Part of him still cares for her, still feels something. That’s been there too long not to feel anything. But he’s not sure if he can trust her anymore.
He walks away.
The railing isn’t the only thing that’s broken.
