Happy Oceans Day 2022 !

Covering over 70 percent of Earth, oceans are one of the most essential components of our planet. The United Nations (UN) designated World Oceans Day on June 8 to remind all of us how the massive water bodies play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem of the planet. The objective of World Oceans Day, according to the UN, is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean.

The occasion also hopes to develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.

As we celebrate the ever-giving oceans of our planet let us take a look at some of the facts that make it fascinating:

Besides being a sight to behold, the oceans also breathe life into the planet as they produce at least 50 percent of the earth’s oxygen.

The oceans hold about 321 million cubic miles or 1.34 billion cubic kilometers of water, which is roughly 97 percent of Earth’s water supply. This also includes the seawater weight which is about 3.5 percent dissolved salt and other essential minerals like chlorine, magnesium, and calcium.

The oceans absorb the sun’s heat, and 30% of carbon dioxide is produced by humans. As they absorb the heat, the oceans transfer it to the atmosphere and distribute it around the world. This pattern of distribution of heat affects global weather patterns and helps regulate temperatures on land. Oceans act as a heater in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer, the natural air conditioner.

More than 80 percent of the ocean is unmapped and unexplored, which makes it an interesting area of our planet. It is also intriguing for some marine enthusiasts as to how many species there are yet to be discovered. The ocean is also the home to some of the world’s oldest living organisms like Jellyfish, horseshoe crabs and more.

Oceans have not been immune to climate change and global warming. The year 2020 marked the oceans’ hottest year on record, and warmer waters have created multiple consequences, from changing colors, to endangered marine organisms like corals. Rising sea levels, more frequent powerful storms, plastic pollution and much more has threatened the health of oceans.

This is a progress shot of my 14 month old Ruth Stout style experimental bed.

I currently have some nearly mature late season potatoes in it to increase my yearly harvest and keep some plant biology in the soil.

Today I happily discovered some Autumnal fungal activity had colonised a section of the mulch. This is great news because it tells me that a little eco system is starting to establish. Straw is being broken down into microbe rich soil. A positive development indeed!

I'm still so interested in how much fauna and flora humans brought with them on the seeds ships. considering how often we see kuroneko, did every ship just have a room of frozen cats?? its really not the smartest idea to immigrate onto a planet and then mess up the ecosystem by adding a bunch of invasive species.

and does that mean that thoma were also bought from earth? are they just a fucked up ostrich species that exists on trigun earth instead of horses or are they actually worms?

maybe all of the trigun animals are worms that just looked and acted similar enough to be named after earth animals.

wouldn't surprise me if the first survivors built their camps/towns and one day there's just a cat-worm on the doorstep meowing for food. the humans would be into that. the first to see a worm-cat would kneel down and go "pspspspsps oh my god she looks like my childhood earth cat! her name was desk lamp! do you wanna be named soup spoon?"

Brief history of anti-LGBT legislations in Russia

Throughout 90s and 2000s there were no discriminatory laws in Russia. There were openly queer celebrities (whether they said they were for PR alone or not is a complicated subject. Nevertheless, there were people who gained popularity and presented queer)

In 2013 the first legislation passed. It was an "anti-propaganda" law to "protect children" from becoming gay. The way to work around it was putting +18 on any piece of media or an event that contained even a mention of the subject.

In 2022 anti-propaganda law stopped being for children only. LGBT was mentioned next to pedophilia, both in the same regard. The law was rushed (like many of the oppressive laws since the invasion in Ukraine) and it was not clear what exactly it meant. In practice it mostly affected movies, TV and internet publications.

Earlier this year, in june 2023, ban of transgender transitioning was put in place. Once again, very poorly worded. This one and the previous one had two main functions:

To censor opposition. Most of those, who disagree with the current state of politics in Russia, if not outright support LGBT, at least don't mind. This information can be dug up and used against said people.

To create an enemy. The war was supposed to be won quickly. They promoted their army to be the second greatest in the word, they promised to take Kyiv in 3 days. Nothing of that happened, but life for everyday people got worse. One of the ways to redirect that frustration is fight an enemy that doesn't exist.

The russian government does not care about queer people nor understands us. They preach to their electorate that they nurtured to hate any "other". They make russian believe that our neighbors are nazis, the whole world wants us dead and they take our children by making them gay. I believed this is where they would stop.

There is no "LGBT organisation" in Russia. Before that they tried to find any minute reason or make up a reason to silence the opposition. Now they don't even need the organisation to exist.

Once again, the words are very loose, so they can use the law in any way they see fit - a very popular practice. It is not yet active, the court decision does not specify that exactly. Some sources say it will be 10th of January, 2024.

Any display of "non traditional values" will be equated to terrorism.
