Doriath is problematic
Am I the only person to think that there's something very wrong with how the Doriathrim sit safe behind their girdle while the rest of us is exposed to enemy attacks?

Are we then supposed to remove the girdle in the name of "solidarity"??

The way some of the people here talk about the secondborn is sick, to be honest. They're Eruhini, they're not animals, they're not worthless, they're not usurpers, they're not to be called slurs, and I don't care what Fëanor said or didn't say, I thought it was well accepted those are the lies of our common enemy!

I think a really fun idea to explore with Tim would be the idea of him having Hyperthymesia.
Hyperthymesia is an ability that allows people to recall almost every event of their life in great detail. It's extremely rare and honestly doesn't have that much research done on it, but recent studies have suggested that people with this ability are limited to autobiographical memories, people with HSAM sometime tend to show symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and may demonstrate obsessive tendencies.
I think it would be an interesting way to explain why Tim was able to recall his first meeting with Dick Grayson and connect the dots to seeing Robin. Tim does display a lot of obsessive behaviours, and while he doesn't really physically display compulsion (like someone with OCD would typically display) there certainly is a strong case to be made for him potentially having it.
But also, can you imagine how fucking horrible it would be for Tim to remember each and every traumatic thing that ever happens to him as a hero and those memories just never fading. Yes, it would make him a better detective and allow him to be arguably smarter than your average joe, but at what cost?

Things about top surgery that I didn't expect (double incision)
It hurt so much less right after waking up than I thought it would, it was similar to pneumonia lung pain like kind of a burning sensation
Wasn't hard or upsetting to get used to my new look!! Also there isn't an ounce of regret in me, I thought I'd have some at least in the first few weeks
I had the posture of a shrimp for like two whole weeks from that compression garment
It itches as it heals which is fucked up bc I can't feel shit in any of it and also when I try to gently pat it to make the itch go away, I can't feel that either so it doesn't help :')
I'm like 5 weeks post-op and I still can't raise my arms above my head gdkdhskhdn
Still reaching for a bra or binder out of habit when getting dressed
It still feels like I'm somehow??? Hiding my chest???? Like when I was still just binding, I still go like "oh this is a good outfit, it hides my chest well" boy you haven't got a chest to hide
The urge to pull out the loose ends of my dissolvable stitches,,,,

Inside of me are two wolves.
One really loves the way the fandom moniker "Kabru of Utaya" sounds and how it gives Kabru the dignity of a full name, and how it connects him to his past.
The other knows that "[x] of [location]" is canonically the dwarven cultural naming practice and thus Kabru would never go by it in canon.

lmao these are ocs I made wayyyy back in 2021 on a personal blog and I don’t think I ever posted them here, so I’ll do a quick recap!
the guy with the blue hair is marion. he hunts demons! baron is a librarian at a university only because everyone else who was actually qualified for the position died and he really just wants to go home and take a nap.
that’s about it! it was a story I started on because I wanted to draw cool outfits and big monsters after spending a weekend playing DMC5 during the lockdown, but recently it’s been getting some more serious depth as I build up the world.
the original desire to give everyone fun hair colors has remained the same tho, that’s not going to change no matter how serious this story does or does not get
⭐ places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app / tip jar!

thesis posts masterlist
Since I am collecting what I write while working on my thesis in preparation to a lecture in which I will be guested to share my thesis work experience I decided to create a themed masterlist (I don't think I did it in the past, but I also not sure about that but here it is anyway). When I was working on my thesis I was also writing a thesis diary in my daily posts to document my experience and my work. All those posts were tagged as #thesis diary so in case you are interested in seeing my day to day thoughts and process you can find them here. These entries go from the 20th of April 2022 to the 8th of November 2022 (the day I defended my thesis and officially graduated). I hope this small masterlist post can be somewhat helpful, and if you have questions my inbox is always open!

I love academia because everyone has loud parasocial beef with a specific scholar over a completely asinine point. like yeah that's my future colleague kevin, he thinks Alexander the Great is a fascist. i would deck him in the face if i could.

Big celebratory shoutout to disabled/mentally/chronically ill school dropouts. You’re brilliant. You’re a hero. Don’t be ashamed. In fact, be proud. Be proud that you were…
…perceptive enough to see the situation for what it was…
…smart enough to know what you needed to do…
…strong enough to defy expectations…
…brave enough to forage your own path…
…and don’t let anyone convince you that their degree makes them smarter than you. or better than you. or more successful than you. or harder working than you. or more deserving than you. All it means is that they had better support systems. better resources. adequate accommodations. All it means is that you both had goals and plans and dreams, but the world let you down while it was seeing them though. All it means is that our society is deeply lacking both systemic and systematic equitability. And that is something to be angry or upset about, absolutely, but not ashamed of.

Comparative Studies, or Twice on the Verge of Falling
The Rimôn fresco of Elwing is considered to be one of the greatest artworks of the Late Classical Era. Found in the courtyard of the old Helcaril Villa (itself a marvellous example of architectural trends during the reign of Tar-Elendil), it occupies a relatively modestly-sized, but excellently exposed niche across from the entrance. Aside from the considerable fame the artist had later gathered, it remains remarkable both for its vividness of emotional expression, contrasting to the usual art style of the era, and for the number and fame of its copies.
The best known of these is the one gracing the lesser courtyard of the villa Surë-or-Falmar. Indeed, the glory of the two is so closely interwined that it seems impossible to ascertain which had contributed to the fame of the other more. And yet the effect of the copy wildly differs from that of the original artwork.
The Rimôn Fresco depicts the figure of the young Elwing standing on the cliff with her back to the churning waters below. She is poised halfway toward the drop, as if on the verge of throwing herself in, one hand clasping the Silmaril at her neck. Wind whips at her torn dress and loose hair. A rarity among artworks confronting the subject, it depicts neither the enemy she is facing, nor the the transformation into bird itself. The figure stands alone - and seems strikingly young. Beholders oft remark that it is hard to believe she is meant to depict a wife and a mother.
The wild and violent atmosphere of the fresco, even though, as with most Classical works, it depicts no blood, and despite the aforementioned lack of actual fighting shown, made its artistic quality fall under scrutiny in its day. From diaries, journals and letters of the period we can, however, see that it proved intriguing enough that people would come visit the Helcaril Villa only to see it in person - and that it won over many of those who were originally critical. Thus it is difficult to ascertain whether the changed nature of the Surë-or-Falmar villa Fresco was intentional on the part of the copyist, or the sign of an inexperienced hand.
The name of the copy's painter has unfortunately escaped history. The style is typical to the reign of Tar-Meneldur, though an exemplary of its genre rather than a dull attempt at imitating fashion. The colour combinations are soft, slightly more so than in the Rimôn Fresco, the lines clean, and the light hazy. The figure depicted is in the exact same position as that in the original artwork.
Viewers of both frescoes predominantly agree, however, that despite the technical skill the painter has exhibited, the Surë-or-Falmar Fresco lacks something of Rimôn's Elwing. The posture is just a little less dynamic; the cliff's edge (perhaps unconsciously or accidentally) removed slightly father from Elwing's feet, making her situation seem something less desparate. The wind's effects hardly seem those of a real gale, and more an aesthetic choice. One of the most interesting judgements has been pronounced by Herunimon of Eldalondë in a letter to his cousin, Rilendur, son of Verahil, dated 24th Nárië, 901: "The S.o.F. figure seems less the Lady Elwing fenced in by foes and making a tragic choice, but more the heroine of one of those new romances, unsure whether to flee the scene after a man has confessed his love to her, or to accept his proposal - or, I hardly know, perhaps such heroines lead more exciting lives than I would guess (...) - but anyhow, the fresco seems more like a coloured plate in a rich novel, than a mural depcting a tale of the Elder Days. All in all, there is not one element which does not fit. But taken together, the effect is incongruous." (Collected Letters, volume II, as accessed from the Royal Library in Romenna)
(from the Romenna Journal of Artistic and Literary Studies)
***
Editor's note: Remembering the considerable public outcry after the publication of Songs of the Elder Days: Lyrics, History and Analysis, the University of Romenna along with its subsidiary organisations seek to make it understood that the views of authors, as regards the addition or not of Lord and Lady before the names of Lord Eärendil and Lady Elwing, do not necessarily represent its own. Were the University to be flippant, it might also seek to ask why proper respect being accorded to the Lord and Lady seems to be held in greater importance than that it be accorded to the Valar, but the University understands that this would bring on public outcry against it from people on both sides of the moro-political divide, so it shall keep its silence.

And another thing! Literally any queer story that takes place during the colonial age would have a huge gaping hole in it if it didn't have anticolonialism as a theme. Especially one that centers indigenous people. Like the reason that every culture had their own concepts of gender until something happened and then suddenly the gender binary was ubiquitous is because western European colonial powers made their view of gender the only acceptable one as part of christianizing and colonizing the world. You're not gonna have a show set in 1717 in the Caribbean where the love interest is a gay Maori man and the main deuteragonist is a non-binary mestizo catholic and just skip over colonialism. Like these are exactly the people who western gender roles are being forced on at fucking gun point during this era. Jim and Ed are both mixed race characters who's gender and sexual identities are in active defiance of the colonial powers that be. And this is the fucking Stede Ed and Jim show.
And there's something to be said for the fact that Stede's toxic masculinity plot line is internalized and Ed's struggle with toxic masculinity is largely external in the form a white guy who rubs elbows with the British Navy when Ed doesn't behave to his standard of masculinity. That choice didn't come out of nowhere and it shows a deep understanding of where homophobia comes from. That's not to say that precolonial communities of color were paradise for people that we today would consider queer but the rich tapestry of sexual and gender expressions that existed in those communities were erased in the name of colonialism. That's going to affect literally any queer person at the time when OFMD is set. These two things are inextricably linked.
Like when David Jenkins says a lot of what we're taught about being men is wrong, motherfucker who taught us what a man was. Who taught Ed what a man was? Who taught Stede what a man was for that matter? It's the white dad with the English accent who is violent (derogatory) and overbearing.
Like you get what I'm saying right? Like it's a silly little rom com but also it must necessarily be that deep because of who these characters are and when and where they exist.

fascinated to know at what point in sam's life he goes from happily subsisting off takeaway pizza (a la flagstaff) and cereal and mac n cheese with marshmellow fluff to exclusively eating Health Food which seems to just actually consist of salads. twelve year old sam likes peanut butter sandwiches enough that its what dean steals for him... i cant decide if thats more on the health food/disordered eating side or the kiddie random junk food crap side. i think possibly the latter but he retains attachment to peanut butter forever. some people would say the sudden food weirdness happens at stanford which, maybe? but thats boring to me its more interesting to think of it as happening at some point when sam's a teenager. pov you develop an eating disorder to #stick it to your dad.

Ultimately I think there is no 'canonical'/authorial intent answer to the question of whether refugees from Himlad were allowed through Doriath or forced to skirt its borders. (Either is possible mechanically: There is that 'great need' qualifier, and it's possible for Melian to allow in normally non-allowed categories of people at will; at the same time, Beren was not supposed to be able to get in. 'Great need' isn't an automatic free pass.) I think if there were, it would have been mentioned, because it is extremely relevant to the debacle with Celegorm, Curufin, and Lúthien.
If refugees were made temporarily welcome, then that's another reason for Lúthien to trust them and makes their treatment of her even more outrageous. (I'm sure it still would have happened, since they went ahead and disregarded Finrod's hospitality while still enjoying it.) It makes Celegorm and Curufin look a lot worse and it should have been mentioned.
If refugees were forced to skirt the borders, then that is going to heavily influence Celegorm and Curufin's feelings and it's weird that they wouldn't bring it up. If they have such a legitimate grievance with Thingol/Doriath, why would they not raise it in their arguments against the quest or in their letter to Thingol? (Ditto if they never tried to enter, whether or not they could have.)
If refugees were allowed far enough inside the Girdle for safety but closely watched to keep from coming any farther in, then that means multiple people would have been very aware that happened and it would be very strange for Lúthien not to know of them in that context — she should be able to identify them (Celegorm and Huan are quite distinctive even in the unlikely event Curufin isn't head-to-toe in Fëanorian symbols) and know they are not necessarily trustworthy. Even if she decides to trust them anyway, it should have been mentioned. (Ditto if they were invited in and didn't come.)
If refugees were able to pass the Girdle and make their way towards Nargothrond without being met with either some amount of hospitality or some amount of hostility, then what were Doriath's marchwardens doing? Staying out of sight and pretending not to have noticed them? Did Thingol give permission? I have trouble imagining Thingol being okay with even giving the impression someone got the better of his defenses. —With this one it's a bit more plausible no one would bring it up during Lay of Leithian events, but only a bit.
Any of these should have been mentioned. There is no option that actually makes sense.
So it comes down to headcanon.
