You were born a child prodigy-a natural genius, talented at everything and anything, and it put you on the fast track for a career in law enforcement, until it went down in flames.
You built a new life for yourself on the other side of the law, but but it all came to a stop with an encounter with an upcoming thief team. You were set up to meet each other by someone who is pulling the strings, but to what end? With no other options, you agree to sign on with them for their first real job, but only to investigate who the person targeting you is and why. It’s supposed to be only temporary, and you were supposed to only be trying to find out who is coming after you, but eventually it becomes obvious that this mystery is bigger than you could’ve imagined, and the answers seem to be where you actually came from...
Lots of different orientation/sexuality choices (nonbinary lesbian, she/her gay man, my gender is bisexual, and more)
Play on Narrative and not have to worry about stat checks and correct answers, normal to play the game as intended, or Master Thief Mode, a true challenge.
Tons of achievements to earn!
Choose your origin between driver, forger, and thief-this will choose who your contact is, which prologue you play through, which missions you’ll play, and what role you’ll have in the final heist at the end of the game.
The player character has a set backstory and core personality traits; you’ll choose how you lean into them.
You can communicate entirely in sign language and choose which sign language you communicate with.
A variety of skills to potentially build; be a jack of all trades, a blend of two or three, or a specialist.
Decisions you made, your lifepath, and your successes or failures over the course of the game will decide the final heist at the end of the game.
Book One of Thieves At Midnight has eight love interests:
“Whatever it is that you want out of this life, I want to give it to you. I want to be your hero.” Caolán / Clíodhna O’Cunningham is the team’s leader; something spurned them to choose a life of building a professional thief team and dodging law enforcement over taking the path of a professor or diplomat. But after they meet you, their professional front soon starts combating with their heart. They are a love interest for any player.
“I’ll say or do almost anything if it’ll make you stay.” Isaiah/Ivanna is the team’s explosives expert and eternal optimist; they have the utmost faith that no matter what happens, the team will pull through. But maybe the optimism and sense of humor is just a defense. They are a love interest for any player.
“I didn’t know what to think the first time I saw you again, but I do now, and I think that we’re supposed to be together.” Milana is the team’s hacker, and your fellow prodigy; you knew Milana when you were children, and fate has brought you back together again. Milana is intelligent and hardworking, but she needs someone to show her that she’s more than just how she’s useful to people. She is a love interest for female players.
“I said to you when we met that you were just a person, but you’re not just a person anymore, you’re my person.” Suzanne is the team’s damsel. Emotionally intelligent and observant, Suzanne serves a vital part on the team; you just have to get her to see that. She is a love interest for female players.
“I could feed you a line about how if you stay, you could make a difference in the world, but I’m selfish, and I want you to stay for me.” Aeneas is one of the team’s grifters; utterly self-serving, Aeneas excels at putting on a new face and they’ve never gotten attached. But perhaps their icy exterior is just protecting a wounded heart. They are a love interest for any player.
“I’ve always seen other people fall in love, and I’ve been waiting for it to happen to me, and now it feels like it finally has.” Dominic is the team’s engineer, adept at taking anything technological apart and putting it back together. He builds the team’s gadgets and disables any security that could be in the team’s way. But the sweet and shy person that he is, maybe he’s more afraid than he’s letting on. He is a love interest for female players.
“I want to be able to close my eyes, fall back, and know that you’re going to catch me.” Milo is the team’s jack of all trades-the pickpocket, safecracker, and inside man. Independent and self-reliant, Milo has put survival first all her life. She is more than adept in the field, but she’s struggling with another aspect of the team-actually being part of it. She is a love interest for male players.
“I want you to choose someone who for once is going to put you first.” The team’s protector and guardian, Jason knows trouble when he sees it, and while initially he thinks it’s you and keeps you at a distance, but perhaps it’s not the team he’s trying to protect. Jason is a love interest for male players.

I'm tired! So no gif! Slim month for reading, but I did some neat crafts and made great progress on Secret Knitting Project I. Kicked some ass at Project Sekai, started rewatching Leverage, life goes on.
The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten ⭐⭐ - A strong start, but it quickly went downhill once we got to the court. It was boring, everyone sucks, and the magic is not as cool as it originally seemed to be.
Among Thieves by MJ Kuhn ⭐½ - I was SO hyped for this when it was released. It's been sitting on my shelf since because of who I am as a person, like an IMPOSTER. Took more than half the book just to get to the heist, and the heist wasn't even GOOD. Too many POVs, no one felt fleshed out enough, and the Secrets were just handed to the reader in the first third. It will no longer live on my shelf.
Mislaid in Parts Half Know by Seanan McGuire ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - not my favorite Wayward book, but still enjoyable. I thought it rehashed the ending of Antsy's last book a little too much, but it was nice to see more of her and go back to the Store. Also loved seeing Kade's Door and Cora's ending.
I have one (1) concrete book plan for April, and that's Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch. Consider me successfully bullied (friendly). I very much want to finish Secret Knitting Project I so I can move on to Secret Sewing Projects and Momther's Blanket I'm still waiting on a few audio holds too, so that will be fun for crafting purposes. Haven't been in the mood to do much art, but I have some fun ideas for paint! Let's go!

200 of my favorite albums that I swear by, from any genre - limited to one per artist. I always wanted to do this since the start of the decade and finally got around to it. I’ve had a lot of different musical obsessions up to this point and periods where i was deep into specific genres so I tried to make sure all of that was represented here. Overall it’s a mix of personal classics that I go back to constantly, albums that helped form my taste, and some recently stuff I love. Didn’t want to stress too much over the order, but i’d say the first 50ish are pretty accurate. I’ll post the list below, and a version of the charts with the titles included. Can you rec historicals with the hero being more like a criminal?
Sure!
All of the Lorraine Heath's Scoundrels of St. James heroes (except for Sterling of Surrender to the Devil) are ex-criminals, as they were basically a part of a street gang of thieves growing up. Jack Dodger of Between the Devil and Desire is probably the most criminal as an adult, but is pretty much legit.
Joss of Joss and The Countess by S.M. LaViolette is a former sex worker so he's like... technically a criminal? And Hugo from Hugo and The Maiden is active when the book begins.
Check out Joanna Shupe's Uptown Girls trilogy--hero of book 1 is a legit lawyer but WAS a criminal in the past, hero of book 2 is a casino owner but he like... is introduced beating the shit out of someone (knuckles bloody). And the hero of book 3 runs a literal gang.
Allegreto of Laura Kinsale's Shadowheart is an assassin and literally kills people in front of the heroine. (Customary CW for noncon first encounter.)
Cull of Grace Callaway's Pippa and The Prince of Secrets is a criminal who runs a band of CHILD THIEVES!!! Wei from Glory and The Master of the Shadows is like... sort of criminal. He's in a gray area.
Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt is a pirate and a total criminal. It's AMAZING. As far as other Maiden Lane heroes go, the Ghosts of St. Giles (Thief of Shadows, Lord of Darkness, and Duke of Midnight) are all vigilantes so it's illegal but still. Valentine of Duke of Sin is like... a kidnapper, murderer, etc. He's crazy and hides in his own walls for like 3-4 months.

♫ I don't wanna be something I'm not to stay alive ♫
name: Michael Vail // age: teen (varies) // sign: cancer // from: Plain River // occupation: student, chef, nurse, #1 cop hater // issues: daddy, mommy, abandonment, etc // likes: anime, classic rock, collecting things, beating people up (athletically) // dislikes: his dad, untidiness // primary setting: silent rebellion
“Cared for” only by a corrupt, violent father who wants nothing to do with him, Michael has to learn how to fend for himself from a very early age. He becomes incredibly resourceful and knowledgeable, books and movies his only sources of entertainment until his shell is finally worn out by an unlikely friendship with Kai. Slowly, he eases into forming more bonds, which in turn help him escape the pain of his sheltered life, even if only momentarily. After all, the more attached you get, the more agonizing it is when you’re inevitably severed away.

Top Ten Standalone Films
(I've done these as individuals on here already and thought I might put them all together)
1. Master and Commander
This is it. The best one. Historically, thematically, emotionally... this movie tells a story about a captain, a doctor, and the crew of a ship very far from home. Adventure and glory, sorrow and heartache, the beautiful scenery is perfectly juxtaposed with the intensity of naval warfare happening on the other side of the world. The characters are compelling and the drama feels real. I have not found a better film to watch yet. This movie has more than one Surprise waiting for you.
2. In Bruges
The funniest, saddest, most relatable and unrelatable movie I have ever seen. Excellent movie dialogue that will have you quoting it for months, gorgeous views, sex, guns, and rock & roll. This movie delves into depression without leaving us too heavy and asks if we are worth redemption. I don't know the answer, but I love the way this movie asks that question.
3. The Rum Diary
This recommendation seems a bit in bad taste considering the recent circumstances (the very high profile, publicly volatile divorce of the two movie leads), but don't let that detract from the ambiance, camaraderie, and humor this film produces. Based on the Book by Hunter S. Thompson, this movie is funny, intriguing, and more than a little revealing. No matter what paradise you live in, there's always a dark side, and sometimes the good guys just don't win. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the memories of friends, lovers, and the good times.
4. Cast Away
Never in my life have I felt loss like I did the first time I watched this movie. But neither have I ever felt such hope. The ups, the downs, everything in between. This movie made me believe in myself and in humanity. I can't say much more than this, if you haven't seen it, I cannot recommend it enough. Though, much like Brad Pitt (in a different movie), I can't stop asking myself "What's in the box?"
5. Wake of the Red Witch
Sailing, thieving, sunken ships, love stories, and giant squids. I love this movie. An old John Wayne film that isn't a western or a war film, this movie stands outside of most at the time. The story is old (and sometimes suffers from antiquated prejudices and morals), but this movie speaks of loves lost and new and the things we do for the memories we carry.
6. Midnight in Paris
A film by Woody Allen, this film is magical and timeless. I think as a writer it's very easy to mythologize prior authors as being greats. Most writers I know do have an appreciation for old things. Yet, while this movie does glorify the past, it makes certain to recognize that there is no real golden age. I love the story, the acting, and the vibes this movie gives off, but more than anything else, I love the message. People before you will always be better at whatever it is you are doing, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it anyway. Who knows? Maybe you'll be the next Neil Gaiman or Stephen King.
7. Darjeeling Limited
Having two brothers, this Wes Anderson film was me. It hit every aspect of being a brother and having brothers that feels important. It also is just a fun story. Religion, truth, soul searching, and the complexities of being a family, this film highlights the fact that being a family isn't always easy and that just because you love someone does not mean that you like them. I cannot tell you how much this movie affected me and how much watching it improved my relationships. It sounds corny, but for me at least, its true. Family is tough, but sometimes its easy too.
8. 1408
1408 is not new. It isn't ultra scary or particularly novel (haunted place that traps you inside). Yet, what makes this film so great to me is that it does 3 unique things. First, it speaks to me as the skeptic. I don't believe in the boogeyman or ghosts or spirits, but this movie acknowledges my skepticism and yet doesn't try to convince me otherwise. It places you inside of the least scary place I can think of, a heavily populated building in the middle of New York city. It doesn't ask whether you believe because it just doesn't care. Second, it tells a real story. Not like a story that actually happened, but a story with a real person at the heart of it. Real emotions, and consequences. Third, it haunts me. I saw this movie when it first came out and I still think about it. I don't believe in ghosts and while this movie did not make me believe otherwise, it did something far more meaningful. It made me- even if only for a moment, doubt.
9. The Princess Bride
What to say about this film? It needs no introduction. Adventure, comedy, romance, swordfighting, and shrieking eels, this movie has it all. This film has had me laughing, crying, and quoting lines from its impeccable dialogue since I was a child. The writing, acting, and swordplay makes this film iconic in nearly every way. There are very few movies that I could watch a hundred times and still be willing to watch again, but if someone asked me to watch it right here and now? It is inconceivable that I'd reply with anything other than "as you wish"
10. The Man in the Hat
This movie was the most relaxing, endearing, and beautiful takes on grief and our relationship with it that I have ever seen. Ciaran Hinds is always a wonderful actor, but this has to be my favorite of his (Persuasion is a close second). The soundtrack was charming and makes this traveling adventure something unforgettable. The lack of dialogue makes the film more (not less) approachable and the delightful way in which grief is neither praised nor vilified allows the story to gently pull us along without fuss. Whether the french countryside or the human capacity to explore our inner emotions, The Man in the Hat ensures a journey that you'll remember.

"Moon Knight Fail Compilation" (...Part 1)
As promised, @kittiesluvyou, a compilation of pratfalls (both literal and metaphorical) throughout Moon Knight's comic book history. It's pretty telling that I'm only about half way through the first volume and I'm already at the picture limit, so there will be more to come hahaha.
Jack Russel starts the tradition of Moon Knight getting chucked into some body of water; Werewolf by Night (Vol. 1/1975), #33.
2. Marc falls right into a death trap and is surprisingly nonchalant about it; “Who Remembers Scorpio? Part One: Sinister Savior” The Defenders, (Vol. 1/1972), #48.

Books I Must Read On 2024
Us readers have infinite TBRs... and that will always be like that because everytime we finish one book we add 2 or 3 more to our list. However, there are some that have been on my TBR for a long time that I would like to finally read. I have chosen 5 of them and I hope I am able to read them all.
Note: they are all books that have been on my TBR for a long time, so they will not be recent or future releases.
1) Throne of Glass
406 pages
Publishing date: August 7, 2012
Fantasy, Romance, Fiction, Young Adult
"In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, Celaena, an assassin, is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king’s champion.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass—and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world."
(Source: Goodreads)
Sarah J. Maas is one of the authors I enjoy reading the most. So far I have read ACOTAR and I'm currently reading Midnight City as it releases. Throne of Glass is another book series of her, and it looks so good, so I would love to read it as soon as possible.
2) Circe
393 pages
Publishing date: April 10, 2018
Fantasy, Fiction, Mythology, Retelling
"In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child--neither powerful like her father nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power: the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.
Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.
But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or with the mortals she has come to love."

I actually purchased this book a couple of weeks ago, so now I have no excuse not to read it. This book along with The song of Achiles are very well-known books by Madeline Miller, and as this is the one I found in the store, it is the one I am going to start with.
3) Gilded
Pages 502
Publishing date: November 2, 2021
Fantasy, Romance, Retelling, Fairy Tale
"Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue.
Or so everyone believes.
When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her... for a price.
Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever."
(Source: Goodreads)
I have read The Lunar Chronicles and Heartless by Marissa Meyer, so I would like to read this one as it is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.
4) The Way of Kings
Pages: 1007
Publishing date: August 31, 2010
Epic Fantasy, Science Fiction, Fiction, High Fantasy
"Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.
It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.
One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.
Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar's niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan's motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war."
(Source: Goodreads)
I've been putting this off because it's 1007 pages long... But I loved the Mistborn series by Branden Sanderson, they are one of the most mind-blowing books I've read, so I'd like to read some more from him. This one is very famous, so Idecided I could go with it.
5) Divine Rivals
Pages: 357
Publishing date: April 4, 2023
Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult, Historical Fiction
"After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.
To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love."
(Source: Goodreads)
This is the most recent book, but I've been wanting to read it for a while now so I decided it would be a good idea to add it to this list.

fool’s errand
by JT
Newly 15. That was me.
Lonely. That was me.
Starved and hungry. That was me.
These memories feel like ghosts to me. Their lives written in a forgotten history book discarded in an abandoned school somewhere.
To look back, I have to get out my film and projector. Set up the sheet and cover my eyes to hit play.
As I force myself to watch the candor in that dark TV room, I sit in fear.
I sit shaking.
Wondering
Wondering if everyone has someone that haunts them the way you glide through my brain in my obsolete hours.
In the hours where I forget what sunlight looks like.
In the hours where my night becomes purple black.
Wondering what horrors will play as the film counts down
3
2
1
A Christmas party lights up the screen
My hair is curled and pinned back
I am wearing blue
My wide eyed gaze is coated in mascara
I sit by a Christmas tree with a girl named Candy
The string lights glittering in our eyes
As we giggle about boys and toys
I get a call from you, my fool’s errand.
Tell me, was it planned all along?
Did you know every step you would take?
Did you want to be a thief or was that part impulsive?
Was it hard to put on that oh-so realistic mask everyday?
Were your lines memorized?
How many hours of rehearsing did it take you?
When did you know you had succeeded?
Were you okay with being my coach and elder because you could dish out my secrets and wash your body after?
And why did I ignore the stench?
Why did I believe all your calculated lies?
Why did I keep my mouth shut the first time I saw the flash of a camera?
On my knees —
The second time?
Why did my mouth say yes despite my mind, body, and soul shrieking no?
How could I look at anything blue after you?
How does your mint taste still not poison me to this day?
Why did I ignore my own sobs to stop?
Years later, I looked under that bridge in the first tunnel on Woodland Way.
Have you been there since?
Did you dare walk there?
Was it just like a blood ocean?
Hot, overwhelming, and drenching
Or is that just me?
Out of my fool’s errands, you are my most regrettable.
Why?
Because I was the perfect jester.
Perfect for your methodical, criminal plans
Small
Bright eyed
Bushy tailed
Tongue tied
My girlhood still unscathed
Just lonely enough
Next time, could you please leave the fresh fifteen year old alone?
Could you shoot the gun rather than making me believe I had a choice?
Or could you tell me that the gun was locked, loaded, and on a timer the whole time?
Could you teach me the game before making me play a savant?
Next time
Next time
Next time
Because of you I know how to play a grandmaster
I know exactly what to do if I find myself in a blood rainstorm
I know how to handle a man who leaves
I know how to spin the tables
I know how to plot my revenge when all my skeletons are poured out to filthy swines
I know how to build ice cold fortresses around my heart
And I know who to trust with my body — myself.
But I don’t know what to do with all this regret
This torment
I don’t know how to thieve everything back from you
The film flips faster
Me in cleats
You, the confidant
Me skipping in a blue jumper
Your footsteps behind me
Me in sneakers
You in a car
My curls
Your glare
Your water
My lack of memory
My bloody underwear
You unharmed
Me surrounded by you and your ferocious pack — ready to tear open the girl in blue and see just what was inside.
I can tell you what you would have seen—
the color blue
a pink bedroom
a piggy bank
sister hugs
laughter
butterfly stickers
schoolgirl notebooks
Our Fathers
And
an intact cherry
Me running
Your cackle
My excitement
Your scheming
My midnight smile
Your charisma stain
My confusion
Your charm
My questions
Your poison
My heart
Your knife
Would you like to know what you would find if you could get your claws on me today?
the color red
a baron room
a smirk
a vendetta
Hail Marys
winter freeze
suspicion
fuck yous
disdain for my fool’s errand
As the film begins to slow, the final scenes conclude with only me.
No more fifteen year old skipping, chatting, and giggling.
My nectar snatched.
With the realization that I was played and betrayed.
Marooned in my bed
Breathing in a salt soaked pillowcase.
The film reel clicks and I am left in my purple black mind.
Dust on my darkened hair
Not with any tears
Not with sadness
But with something much more vast — emptiness.
My fool’s errand frozen for only me to morn
I sit there in repentance
No longer hungry
No longer lonely
Newly 22.

Wooooo, it’s happened!!! It’s finally here!!
I’ll be honest, still not quite how I wanted it to happen-it only has the driver prologue and I’m a little too tight on money to have Jason’s art done and his will done at a later date, but it’s finally here!! All the mountains of edits and rewrites, and it’s finally happened!
I’m taking a break over the weekend, but will be back to working on chapter four and the forger prologue over the weekend.

im cheating and sending u the same numbers that you sent me because theyre like, the best questions okay 1, 2, 15, 19 KISSES
hiiiiii bestie my answers aren't nearly as interesting as yours sadly, i could NEVER be as well read as you. this got long so the tldr is don't listen to me for book recs just go to jess :)
1. book you’ve reread the most times?
technically it’s probably twilight but let’s say it’s not, and in that case let’s say it’s the raven boys by maggie stiefvater. it’s definitely my most heavily annotated book and i tend to date my annotations and well there’s just a lot of them
2. top 5 books of all time?
i’m gonna do a fiction list and a nonfiction list and again be nice bc i’m not super well read 😭😭 also in no particular order
fiction:
catching fire by suzanne collins sorry i’m a slut for the second book in a series
a gathering of shadows by v.e. schwab see above
the dream thieves by maggie stiefvater sigh. see above
six of crows by leigh bardugo
the secret history by donna tartt sorry women
nonfiction:
dark waters: flood and redemption in the city of masterpieces by robert clark
the power broker: robert moses and the fall of new york by robert caro
the line becomes a river: dispatches from the border by francisco cantù
dopesick: dealers, doctors, and the drug company that addicted america by beth macy
unsettling truths: the ongoing, dehumanizing legacy of the doctrine of discovery by mark charles and soong-chan rah sorry for listing a book on religion. also if these guys names mean anything to you pls do NOT look at me
15. recommend and review a book
ok ok gonna do my fave nonfiction i've read recently and some of you have been unlucky enough to hear me talk about it but it's the power broker by robert caro, it's a 1,200+ page brick of a nonfiction book published in the 1970's as a biography of robert moses and just new york city infrastructure in general. i read a lot of nonfiction and honestly a lot of the writing is just bad even if the content is interesting but this was seriously one of the most well-written pieces of work i've ever read and it completely changed the way i think about local government. some fun excerpts and all my notes:
granted, part of the fun was i read it with my dad and we had a lot of fun bonding over it, but still! it's been such a cool foundation for other works on urban studies, too - i recently finished davarian l baldwin's in the shadow of the ivory tower: how universities are plundering our cities and there was a whole chapter on new york that i felt really well-equipped to engage with
19. most disliked popular books?
ok not to be one of those ppl that are like teehee i hated it before it was problematic but genuinely i never got the hype about harry potter. i think the problem is i read them out obscenely out of order and probably just a little too young (i started with the order of the phoenix when i was 10) but nevertheless i've just never cared. more recently i read the midnight library and i was so unimpressed i was this could've just been a supernatural episode we didn't have to do all this
book asks <3

Saltwater (Kaz Brekker) Part 1
Summary: After escaping from a trader who deals in human trafficking Ira finds herself drowning in more than just the ocean. When she thinks she's going to die - She stares into the endless depths of the Leader of the Crow Club and suddenly she is drowning in more than just the sea.

A/N: I have never read any of the books but have seen most of the show; it had been a while back but I hope I do this one-shot justice. I've revisited the show again so I wanted to write something.
Check Out My Workshop!
Part 2 here
It was a good plan. A well-thought-out plan with alternatives if something went wrong. But not even the smart and cunning mind of the leader of the Crows could have foreseen such a wrench being thrown into his plans. Inej had said her informant had gotten news that a ship filled with gunpowder was coming to dock here in Ketterdem. An illegal ship carting so much gunpowder that anyone who could get their hands on their cargo would be set for life; one rich motherfucker with pockets overflowing with Kruge. Of course, he had to be the one to nab it. It was after all, what he and his crows did best; stealing and thieving for not only clients but for themselves too. There was a reason why they were famous for their work - they were damned good at it and not a lot of gangs in the area wanted to cross them.
But if Kaz believed in any type of saints or gods he would have probably cursed them out for this. It was supposed to be a flawless plan. That was until it all went to shit in a blink of an eye. The ship was docked near midnight; the darkness was a perfect cover for Inej to slink her way onboard while the crew of the ship had gone to the local pub with only a few men to guard the cargo. She would make quick work of them while Jesper and himself would climb aboard to grab how many barrels they could onto an empty cart and buggy just around the corner in the alleyway from the docks. It was a perfect plan if he did say so himself.
But they had not accounted for one more person beneath the ship's deck. A Heartrender hiding away for this sort of thing; a measured precaution. Kaz should have known right away that something was amiss immediately at the sight of the rogue Grisha as soon as he and Jesper went below deck. A pirate crew with a Heartrender onboard guarded more than just a load of gunpowder. But it was too late too little to say anything about it and all hell broke loose.
~
It was cold and cramped. Little covered her from the chill of the darkness that engulfed her. But even without her sight, she could feel the things around her. Hear the things around her. She had sworn never to allow a man to take advantage of her again; to allow her to see her so weak and vulnerable. But for a girl in her position it was little she could do; even fighting back was returned in punishment far worse. The soft whimpers and sobs surrounding the darkness of their cramped enclosure were going to drive her mad as much as the swaying of the ship would. She hated the ocean. Hated it was a passion and she felt more trapped in it than the cage she was currently being hidden inside.
And when the soft broken prayers of the other girls long past went silent she couldn't help but silently begin her own; even when she knew her faith lay in no one but herself. But perhaps that would soon change when suddenly a flash of light illuminated their enclosure with a bang and a few screams of fear from the other girls. Two men came barreling inside; they grappled together and the girl pressed herself closer to the front of the bars even when the others within their own restraints backed away and suddenly she felt the glimmer of fire back in her soul.
She realized one man was that of the Heartrender who had been guarding them - the one who found pleasure in tormenting them. She only pulled away from the bars when the men smashed into the lined cages - a clinking sound caught her attention as a set of keys on a ring slid just into her reach and she was swift to pick it up and smash the damned metal into the pedlock on her cage. She would have liked to think she was kind and unlocked those of the other girls. But one look at the scene in front of her told her she had no time to do so; she had to run - she knew they were in port. Docked at whatever destination they had been assigned to take them. This was her chance and she took it.
Scrambling over the grappling men on the floor she made it to the opened slot where the hidden wall panel had been smashed in; she turned to look into the dimly looking room with conflicted eyes. She didn't know who these people were; they could be thieves they could be the very people who bought her and the other girls just wanting to take out the trash before anyone could rat them out. But something in her gut twisted when she witnesses the man in a wrestling match with the Heartrender began to lose his strength. He had the Grisha's hands unable to perform the movements needed to use his ability to stop his heart but that didn't mean he was safe.
And then it happened. A gun slid across the floor and landed inches from her bare toes. She felt her heart start to pound as she looked up just as the two men looked at her as if realizing what was going on. The Heartrender shoved the other man off of him and launched himself at her. She acted without thought as she bent and snatched the weapon from the floor; lifting it with a face of pure evil as she pulled the trigger. But her aim was not true as she'd never fired a gun in her life and instead of hitting the man in the heart the bullet landed in his shoulder. Seeing this she dropped the weapon and bolted into the captain's quarters and up the steps towards the deck passing by another dressed in all black. She paid little mind to him as he didn't try to stop her.
And then she felt it; the sudden fury of pain in her chest that made her collapse and grip the banister for support. Her eyes welled up with tears; not for the pain in her chest although it was excruciating it was for the fear of what was about to come. She didn't want to die. She looked up as the Grisha stumbled up the steps looking worse for wear and with a face like a devil. As her vision began to blur in red and black as the pounding in her ears became harder and louder; her strength weakened as her heart nearly burst within her chest cavity.
And as her vision began to grow blank and her eyes close over glassy orbs she saw the figure in black swing the cane she hadn't noticed him using and smash the Grisha in the back of the head. The pain was immediately relieved but it was far too late as her eyes closed and she tipped backward over the banister. She did not feel the ice-cold water as it engulfed her small form nor did she see the figure of the man whose gun she shot dive in right after her.
She did not know how long she was out but her consciousness slipped in and out. She was dead right? She should be. Her body hurt; her lungs and her heart tried to work overtime to gather whatever strength of life she had left in her to keep her breathing. Her eyes fluttered open briefly to see a blurry figure of a man leaning over her drenched in seawater as he desperately tried to pump air into her lungs.
When her eyes finally fluttered open for the last time just to catch a glimpse of pale blue cold as the water she'd drowned in staring down at her under severe brows she realized she'd never seen any other color more beautiful; she must have been dead to be seeing an angel then. Her eyes slid shut as she went limp against the wet dock beneath her.
