My first (yet primitive) jam session!!
What can you do with a guirro, cabasa, and a 99 cent gimmick instrument? In an impromptu moment, the Beauregard residence found out. Our story started two weeks ago, at an intimidating, not quite beginner accommodating local guitar shop. I was left alone at a wall of guitar cables, stared lost for a good 10 minutes and chose one based on length and color. Before checking out I perused their sheet music and method books section, the only place I truly belonged. On to top of the beginner's bookcase sat a bin of strange plastic children's 'instruments': kazoos, slide whistles, and the super bizarre unbeknownst to me nose flute. The flute looked as ridiculous as it sounded : a narrow plastic nostril cradle connected to a flat mouth guard via a hollow shaft. You held the cradle to your nose, rested your lips opened upon the mouth guard and blew into the shaft only using your nose. Complete and utter nonsense; I had to own it, thus the green 99 cent nose flute came home with me. I was utterly disappointed when it turned out to be a farce. I couldn't play it; my father, who is obsessed all things bizarre got no sound out of it. We were bummed. Well tonight, my parents and I were celebrating the arrival of my new guirro (called the assault weapon by my mother). Serenading each other with chaotic racket on the couch, one of them sighs and said 'too bad the damn nose flute doesn't work. This weird shit could totally benefit from nose flute'. In desperation I tried it again and GOT IT TO WORK. Somehow this triggered my mother to grab my cabasa and jokingly jam with me. Dad added what he called 'rainforest sounds' with the new guirro. The joke became serious, with my parents actually following my rhythm, a single toned, primitive nose flute rendition of 'the itsy-bitsy spider'. We started swaying in unison like a hippie tribe imitating The Temptations. It was actually one of our best bonding sessions in a while. Look out world of dead show cover bands and drum circles, The Repulse Monkey (we do tai chi together, okay) will be jamming out in a parking lot near you soon! Get that tippin' change ready fo' our jar. In short: I love music; I love my parents; nose flutes will be given to any student I have because no child artist should live without one.

Honest Opinion: Kun Solo shoulder rest
My very first shoulder rest was a molded sponge held to my 1/2 size violin with rubber bands.
Each and every shoulder rest since then has been a trusted and true Kun Collapsible.
Frank Marchitto of A Violin Shop in Schenectady, New York, invited me to use a Kun Solo, free of charge, to see if it was worthy of his window space.
Though it may not be as flexible as the Collapsible many violinists know and love, I personally feel Kun’s much needed and appreciated re-design proves to be easier and more comfortable to use.
Fresh out of the box, Solo’s differences were noticeable. Its shape boasts rounded corners and grooved foam padding. The grooves add nothing more than aesthetics, but the rounded corners rest gently and ergonomically on my shoulder and chest. The original Collapsible’s sharper and narrower corners would occasionally leave their mark upon my skin.
Solo’s pad is wider than the Collapsible as well, making it feel sturdier and thus less likely to fall off during those stage-anxious neck gripping, shoulder tensing moments.
Solo’s improved ease of use rang apparent as it was turned on its back, revealing a simple slide and catch mechanism upon its legs. Not only does it allow each leg to expand to five different positions instead of the Collapsible’s three, but it also removes the hassle of winding and unwinding the miniscule leg-anchor wheels used on older Kun models. That is a game changer for me, for I’ve just rendered my Collapsible useless by dropping said anchor-wheel deep within my sofa sectional.
Use of the Solo immediately affected my posture. The instrument felt far more secure, and I had no need to clamp my shoulder and neck muscles to keep it in place. I could successfully play good portions of Mozart’s Concerto 5 in A without my thumb touching the violin’s neck whatsoever.
There is one feature the Solo lacks that I sought after shortly after installing it upon my instrument: a pivot-enabled pad. Pivoting the angle of the Collapsible became an ingrained habit, and I was slightly disappointed when the Solo did not bend to my will; however I learned that the other adjustments made to the Solo’s design nullified the need for it to pivot anyway.
The Solo sits slightly farther from the violin than the Collapsible, perhaps challenging young players or those with very short necks. This issue is its only detractor to me.
