Night has fallen by the time they emerge from the ice cave aboard Metuendus.

They’d placed the merman in an enclosed tank below deck with enough sedative in it to knock it out for two days. The mood of the crew is rambunctious and invincible, as it always is after a capture. The booze (which no one seems to remember how it possibly got snuck on board) gets passed around generously. They’d made history, why wouldn’t they celebrate? As if merely capturing the world’s first-found merman gave them any credit whatsoever for its existence. It’s freezing out on the deck, Derek’s breath frosting over in billowing clouds as he moves to get out of the wind, still not totally sturdy after his near-drowning experience. He still has the blanket someone had procured for him when they arrived, the heavy wool draped over his shoulders. Derek snags the neck of a rum bottle and dodges Boyd’s looming arm. Erica is right at his side. “Come on, sourpuss. Can’t you at least celebrate the victories?” It had taken coming to the most treacherous place on the planet to find the merman because its survival alone is a testament to its resilience. The fact it would now be carted across the world to exist inside a fish bowl on some billionaire’s desk for the rest of its life is a tragedy, not a victory. Derek levels them with the most apologetic look he can muster. “This is my party face.” Erica says, “That’s a pretty pathetic expression, is what that is.” I have a pretty pathetic existence, he doesn’t say, and takes a swig of the rum. “I’ll see you when we board,” then slams his cabin door behind him.
