Day of Silence
Title: Day of Silence (2011)
Author: thetimesinbetween
Words: 32k;  POV: Alternating;  Rating: T
Summary: This is a story about support, love, and friendships that are more like family. There is Kurt and Blaine being their spectacularly adorable selves; Santana being Santana in all her fiery, vulnerable glory; Quinn being a strong, independent woman; Dave Karofsky grappling with who he is and who he wants to be; and Nick and Jeff...well, you'll have to read on to see about them.
Review: This is an ensemble story at its core but Kurt and Blaine offer a grounded foundation which the other characters revolve around. Somehow every single character, despite them having vastly different trajectories (and some of whom we have next to no canonical information on) are pitch perfect in terms of characterization; there are even some moments where you’re stopped in your tracks because how did this author possibly predict canon down to the dialogue? There’s incredibly sweet, romantic moments between Kurt and Blaine that demonstrate their soul-deep connection, raw vulnerability from Santana and Dave, and a spirit of camaraderie that Glee should have leaned into harder. This could be an episode of the show (or many) and I wouldn’t have complained for one second.

Bide & Stay
Title: Bide & Stay (2013-14)
Author: lurkdusoleil
Words: 30k (total);  POV: Blaine;  Rating: E
Summary: Kurt and Blaine are souls meant to meet again and again. But sometimes they don’t quite catch each other. (And later, even reunited soulmates have to figure each other out.)
Review: This is not your typical soulmate story but a literal exploration of, “my soul knew something that my mind and body didn’t know yet.” This story manages to nail their dynamic while transposing it across time with all the obstacles and climate changes thrown into the mix (and yet you never really lose the sense of them as individuals, either). It’s got supernatural themes without dipping too far into the paranormal—it really just is them, in every lifetime, and who they might be and how they might cope if, in some of those lifetimes, they missed each other.

Andante, Andante
Title: Andante, Andante (2020)
Author: fionapear
Words: 15k;  POV: Burt,  Rating: G/T
Summary: Burt settles himself down in the chair of the vanity, peering up at the wall-mount TV at the movie. He fishes in his pocket for the piece of paper from the restaurant earlier. His fortune cookie fortune reads: “With time comes understanding.” It feels a little apt, even if he can’t place exactly why. (Or: In which Burt Hummel, slowly, begrudgingly, grows to accept Blaine's presence in his life.)
Review: This is a roughly canon compliant look at the end of season two into the summer as Blaine slowly integrates himself into the Hummel-Hudson fold. There are road trips, beach outings, backyard bbqs and one particularly poignant heart-to-heart which includes some of the most accurate Blaine dialogue I’ve ever read (you could hear the words come out of his mouth, see his gestures of resignation, feel his well-worn defeat!) I’ll admit it made me a little weepy and let’s be real: Burt POV outsells EVERY time.

Beyond Life, Beyond Death
Title: Beyond Life, Beyond Death (2016)
Author: dancewithme19
Words: 19k;  POV: Kurt;  Rating: M
Summary: Soul-tying isn’t a decision to take lightly. Kurt knows that. But for perhaps the first time in his life, there’s no part of him that even wants to second-guess. Maybe because there is a part of him that knows what’s coming.
Review: Never have I ever wept through approximately 75% of a story. While this takes place in a universe very explicitly resembling canon (it’s more canon divergent than it is AU), the worldbuilding was somehow still expansive and perfectly executed. There was never a point in which I had to suspend disbelief because I was just right there with them through every step. There's so much that's heartbreaking here, and it's such an honest, introspective look at what grief can look like--magic or not--but there's also so much hope and love and the earnest, profound connection that they share. It was such a lovely, grounding experience to read and I'm only sad it wasn’t longer (though honestly, who knows if I could stand it!)

Scholars & Gentleman
Title: Scholars and Gentleman (2011-12)
Author: mary flanner
 Links: Klaineficspdf [x]
Words: 161k; POV: Alternating; Rating: M
Summary: Blaine tries to find his place amongst a family never meant to be his own while Kurt tries to move them all beyond the people they once were. Later, they grow up and apart until the darkest night and a failing heart brings them together once again. An interrogation of Kurt and Blaine’s friendship and, later, relationship as it develops—loosely from Never Been Kissed to The Purple Piano Project (Parts One and Two), and a jump after that into the near future (Parts Three and Four).
Review: This diverges from canon after season two (Blaine is the same age as Kurt) and it was written so early on and yet it still manages to capture Blaine’s earnestness, Kurt’s bravery, and their connection. This story gives you the kind of heart in your throat/clutching your chest/holding your breath kind of feeling that can only come from a story that moves you. It’s bittersweet, and it hurts so much—to think of a timeline wherein Kurt and Blaine went their separate ways, to imagine them hurting so much, to consider any reality where they aren’t theirs forever (no matter how brief that consideration). Sure, we only deal in happy endings here, but sometimes the getting there is full of bittersweet yearning. Any story with well-written Burt will knock me off my seat, but this one does it with a subtle finesse that might bring you to tears.

The Wandering Poet
Title: The Wandering Poet (2012)
Author: wynniethepooh
Links: AO3 [x] FF.net [x] LJ [x] Klaineficspdf [x]
Words: 27k; POV: Blaine; Rating: T
Summary: Love is not a common factor between the people in Blaine's life.
Review: A lovely little heartache of a character study about Blaine coming of age and doing his best in an unfair situation. It can be a tough read at times, especially given the tenuous nature of his relationship with Cooper (a decidedly more dour version with canonical tensions pulled out and exaggerated), but the pacing and voice helps cast some light on the shadows. Though this is arguably more of a Blaine story than a KurtandBlaine story, there’s still moments of quiet, grounded emotional intimacy as they build their friendship that really cuts to the heart of their connection. This is one of those stories that you can really settle into while it settles itself under your skin; they feel real, Blaine’s hurt and desperation is palpable, and all that’s left to do is hope they find their happy ending (or perhaps their happy beginning).

welcome to my little corner of the internet! after more than a decade of reading about kurt and blaine (in this universe and every other), i’ve decided to finally document and review all of my favorite stories because let’s face it: at this point, i’ll probably love them for a long time to come. hopefully this will be a place where conveniently organized and easily accessible, both for me and any wanderer who happens upon them. this is just a personal project and definitely a work in progress, so feel free to drop a ask if you have a fic rec or if i can maybe recommend one to you!
thanks for stopping by x
