It was quiet early as the sunbeams woke you up. This was your second night in Encanto and you definitive slept better than the last one. You stretched your body and changed from your comfy pajama to your black unitard. It was made from stretchy material, and you always wore it under your show clothing and of course for training. It has a beautiful red and green embroidery on it which shows different flowers from your left leg to your right shoulder. You took one of the green chiffon skirts out of your closet and tied up your hair with a fitting ribbon. Tonight, was the big one. The opening night was always the most important show. This show made sure if more people would come to watch the regular ones or not. So, everyone put their everything into this night. It had to be perfect. You exhaled deeply before a smile grew on your lips, one last look into the mirror. “You can do this. It’s a show like it’s always.”, you said to yourself before turning on your heel. The bed next to yours was already empty. One last glance into the mirror, you nodded to yourself. You slipped into your comfy boots and left your cart. You made sure to fresh yourself a bit up from the night and brushing your teeth of course before entering the ring. “Morning ma cherie.” – “Morning Eva.” – “Bee and Rosemary are already in the ring.”, she said while carrying some fabrics to a bigger tent. You nodded and made your way up to the main entrance. On the way you greeted everyone from your founded family. The court was filled with different carts and tents. Your home was always a huge camp. You had two bigger tents for a kitchen like place and one for sanitary facilities. One tent was for all the costumes, wigs, props and utils for the shows. One was used as a common room. Some smaller tents for sleeping and some carts for the actual families. Some people claimed that they could never live like this, but you didn’t know tit any other way.
And to make things clear, the circus Dubois wasn’t like the normal circus people would know. There weren’t different kinds of small acts lined up to each other. No. Circus Dubois was more like a huge musical show. All small parts were connected to one heartwarming story. Mostly they told stories about love, about family and how to find your own path to felicity. They always delivered a beautiful message within breathtaking dances, songs, and stunts. Within two hours all of your family member would tell such a story and made the audience forget about time and space. You were actors, performers, dancers, and mostly, you all were truly passionated.
Gael and some other boys and girls were already practicing a new dance act. Bee was together with Rosemary on the grandstand. Discussing the new act, the three of you made up before coming here. Together with Eva you were the only ones performing with the ropes, tightropes, and trapeze. Rosemary was pretty new to your family, and she was still learning. The younglings like Daniel and another girl called Johanna were also dancing on the tightropes, but only on the low hanging ones.
High in the skies were your and Bee’s space. Also, Bee wasn’t only your partner but also a blessed choreograph. He always had the best ideas for new show acts and dances, and you were willing to test everything he came up with. Today you wanted to show a new thing he created. It was an act only created for you. The first time in forever you had a solo act. I don’t have to underline how nervous you were about it, but you knew how to put a record on. At least it worked for the audience to not realize how nervous you really were. The new performing wasn’t comparable to your usual tricks. You weren’t on a tightrope or a trapeze. It was called aerial silk and it fitted perfectly into the opening show. It was a bit more complicated than your usual because of different reasons First of all, you were alone. You had no partner catching or carrying you. Second, you had no real safety. You needed to tie those different kinds of scarfs and ropes around your body while performing and you needed a lot of condition, to gain the needed energy to fly with those ropes of fabric. Between all that you still needed to sing and look, well, happy, but that was the burden of a performer.
“Good morning y/n.”, Rosemary said while sitting behind Bee, who turned around to greet you with a great smile. “Morning.” – “Good morning you two.”, you said while climbing up to them. “You wanna practice one last time?”, Bee looked at you with a raised brow while you were taking off your boots. “I would prefer to, one last time. Especially the fall.” – “Alright. Then I’ll look for Eva and Jean, that we attach the silks properly. But don’t stress yourself too much, okay?”, the dark-haired boy patted your head before leaving you two behind. “Can you once again show me the jump from level four to level three?”, Rosemary asked while looking up to you. You nodded and so the two of you went for the platforms.  The ring was filled with music and different voices practicing one last time. Some of the older ones started decorating the grandstand and masts. Everything needed to be perfect. You wanted that your abuela would be proud and that the whole Encanto would be stunned.
A sound of a pot shattering could be heard through the whole house. “Isa?!”, Mirabel’s voice clang from the first floor. “I’m alright.”, the girl answered while sweeping the broken parts carefully together with her hands. “What even was your intention?”, a sleepy voice came from the door behind her. “I wanted to gather a few of my prettiest pots to bring them to the circus folks. As decoration you know?” – “And why do you need to wake me up therefore?”, he rubbed his eyes and leaned against the doorframe. “Uhrm, because you can help me?”, she said with an annoyed undertone. “Por favor?”, he said with a grin, what gained a rolling of her eyes. “Por favor!”, Isabela stood up crossing her arms. Camilo just grinned, “Let me change real quick.”, he disappeared in his room for a few minutes. Isabela took the broken parts of the once pretty pot to the trash and looked again to the pots she decided to bring with her. “Why do you actually need to bring some?”, Mirabel asked while looking at her sister’s hands. Making sure she doesn’t cut herself. “Eva asked if I could help with some decoration, and I thought it would be prettier to have some flowers in actual pots. You know?” Her sister nodded and let go of her hands. “You need any help?” – “Nah, don’t worry. Luisa is already helping, and Milo is also coming with us.”, she smiled shoving the intact pots together. “Wait, really?”, Mirabel asked with this mischievous undertone. “For real hermana, what’s wrong with you?”, Isa shook her head. “Oh, nothing in particular.”, she giggled.
“Is that so?”, Camilo’s voice made both girls nearly jump. “Dios mio, primo…”, Isa grabbed her chest. The boy was standing there with a gloating grin, wearing his usual yellow ruana. Mirabel could barely save another pot from falling. After she caught her breath and put the pottery back on the table, she fixed the glasses on her nose and just smiled at him. Isa switched her look back and forth between her primo and sister. “I really don’t care what’s up with the two of you.” Before both of them could throw in their argument another voice was heard. “Are you ready?”, Luisa now stood in the kitchen and took as many pots as she could carry. “Sure.”, Camilo said giving one last glance to Mirabel while taking some of the pots himself. He and Luisa went outside. Before the oldest in the room could also leave Mirabel grabbed her by her sleeve. “Just pay some attention to Milo’s behavior around some of the artist.”, she winked with her eye suspicious and let her go. Isa just furrowed her brows and went after her younger relatives. She couldn’t suppress a rolling of her eyes.
After a few hours they arrived at the camp. Normally, they would take them about thirty minutes of casual walking, but they had to stop every few minutes. Some villagers hold them up and asked them about their well-being, some children wanted Camilo to shift for them, some wanted to be carried by Luisa, and some asked for help for the next days, or simply align greetings for their family. It wasn’t easy to be a Madrigal, but after all they were used to it. As they arrived, they were already expected by Eva. “Isabela, thank you petite.”, she run over to help them with carrying the pots. “De nada.”, she simply said while handing her some pots. “We can bring them right to the ring. I already found the perfect places where to put them.”, she led the way and the others followed. They placed the pots at the grandstand down. “Hola!”, Bee greeted them while entering the ring. He was standing at the railing in the first row of the audience area. They greeted back and Isabela waved at him. He only smiled and turned his head back to the roof of the tent. “Do you need any help elsewhere?”, Luisa asked while stretching her back. “We’re nearly finished, there are only trifles left.”, Eva said while appraising the colorful pots. “Maybe we can help with them?”, Camilo suggested with his signature smile, shifting into Luisa, and flexing with her muscles.  Luisa rolled her eyes at him and poked him in the ribs, what led to him shifting back. “We still need to put all the blankets and cushions on the seats and…”, before Eva could finish the sentence Camilo run off to get blankets. “On it!”, Luisa said and followed her cousin.
You were already climbing up to one of the higher platforms. After you warmed yourself up, you wanted to practice one essential thing of the choreography again. There was the climax, where you would climb the whole rope up while tying yourself up in it until you would let yourself fall. The fabric would stop the fall, so that it would like you were agravic. Bee had seen this once and was so obsessed with the dance like fall and he did infect you with his passion. It was somehow bold to put such a new choreography into the opening night, but you wanted to stun everyone with your solo performance. So no extra mile was too extra. You grabbed the thick fabric in front of you and jumped into it. Entangled the material with your legs, climbing a bit higher, so you would be able to tie the rope around your body. Carefully but also elegant. At least everything needed to fit into the dance act later. You took a deep breath and controlled the fabric around your body a last time. You stopped counting how many times you already tried this technique but somehow you never finished it correctly. As you once said, it always hard training.
It was way softer and warmer than you expected. Wait, warm? You opened you eyes and looked at a very familiar pair of eyes. A relived smile grew onto your face and the boy in front of you mirrored that. “Are you okay?!”, a well-known voice brought your attention to the boy over, standing with the girls still in shock. You looked back at your savior. Your eyes widened, you looked back to Bee frozen in place at the grandstand and then your glance got back to the same boy holding you in his arm right now. “Did I hit my head somewhere?”, you asked while blinking heavily and looking back and forth between both boys. “I hope not.”, your savior said and before you could open your mouth again, you felt another weight pulling you down. The Bee holding you suddenly changed into the curly haired boy you have seen before. Camilo was way smaller than Berthold, so the sudden shift back dragged you down again, still resting in his arms. You hold onto his ruana of the sudden movement. “You okay?”, he smiled sheepish at you. You now looked totally shocked at him, not being able to bring even a word over your lips. “Thank you, Camilo!”, Bee run over the two of you. The shapeshifter set you down carefully, making sure you had gained your balance and just waving at the closer coming boy. Your usual partner cupping your cheeks with his hands. “Are you hurt?”, he touched your head and shoulder carefully, looking for any injuries. You just shook your head slightly, eyes still pinned onto the Madrigal. Bee saw your confusion and started laughing. “You look more surprised than Gael a day ago.”, you just nodded again and the boy in front of you let out a chuckle. You couldn’t avert your glance from him. Camilo still felt a bit uneasy, a warmth climbing up to his head. He scratched the back of his head. “Camilo, I could need your help here!”, Eva shouted from outside of the tent. “Coming! “, somehow, he was glad to escape this situation. The feeling in his gut wasn’t a good one. He bowed slightly down to the two of you before leaving the ring again. You looked after him, still processing what happened a few minutes ago.
“Is this really save?”, Isabela looked up to you and then back to your partner. Bee nodded, “That’s why we practice it.” He smiled. This wasn’t the answer she wanted to hear. “Just relax mi sol! You got this!”, Bee shouted up to you. “It’s the highest she’s ever done until now.”, Rosemary said insecure next to them. Isabela really felt uneasy with said statement, but before she could ask Berthold again, she could see you move already. You took one deep breath in before leaning your upper body forward. You whole body started tilting and before Isabela could react you would unfurl from the fabric. Everything seemed to work properly. It wasn’t too fast or too slow. It was a fluid movement.
“We have the missing pieces.”, Luisa said while joining the group with Camilo. The boy also looked up and couldn’t help it but felt unsettled with the scene in front of him and he should be right. Something kinda went wrong. Halfway through your way down the fabric loosened itself to fast. Everyone could see the little asymmetry in your flow. “Is this supposed to happen?”, Luisa raised a brow, but before Bee could even answer Camilo sprinted forward. Isa threw her hands over her mouth, the same as the younger girl next to her. Before you could grab onto the fabric after realizing your fault, you could feel how your leg slipped out of the fabric. You weren’t that high anymore, but you could feel the fear creeping up your spine as you realized how the whole rope loosened around your whole body. You would fall within the next seconds. You pinched your eyes together, preparing yourself of the impact of the floor. You tried to at least grab onto some of the material, which was supposed to provide you security, but no chance.  Your weight pulling you further down until you sensed the collision.
Half an hour later you were back to normal. You stopped practicing for now to give your body a bit rest, wandering through the camp looking for a specific boy. You were finding what you were looking for. Camilo sat on some rocks, facing the horses under the trees. You sneaked behind him and placed your hand on his shoulder. “Hey chameleon.”, Camilo jumped and shifted first into Berthold, then into you, into Eva and then finally back to himself within seconds. He grabbed his heavy beating chest. You looked bewildered at him, “Wow, that was fast.” – “Dios mio. Do you want to kill me?”, he tried to catch his breath. “Sorry...”, you smiled and placing yourself next to him. He inhaled deeply and waved you off and seated himself again. “Actually, I wanted to thank you, for the catch.”, you tilted your head into direction of the place of the accident. He caught his breath and smiled sheepish at you. “De nada.” You suddenly had the urge to change your view to the animals in front of you. “Does it hurt?”, you mumbled while pulling your knees to your chest and laying your head onto them. “Perdón?”, he raised a brow looking at you. You bit onto your lower lip. “Your transforming…does it hurt?” Camilo looked a bit shocked at you and set his glance onto your hands. Never did someone asked him that, not even his parents. Everybody just saw the fun side of his gift but in all those seventeen years no one ever asked about disadvantages. “Sometimes…”, he said calmly, the corner of his lips curled up, “but don’t worry. I can manage that pretty good.”, his eyes laid softly on your statue. You looked up once more and smiled at him. “That’s quite reassuring.”
“Do you often get injured?”, Camilo asked looking at some older bruises at your wrists. You stroked with your thumb over them. “That’s the risk that comes with my job I guess but mostly my muscle memory saves me before getting hurt really bad.” – “Muscle memory?” – “Yeah. If you do something repeatedly for a long time my body will save the movements and will act on its own. That saved me a lot of times, and yeah Bee also did.”, a giggle escaped your throat. Camilo took your hands in his, caressing the bruise he saw earlier. This sudden action caught you without any guard. His touch felt so soft, and safely. “You know my tía could help with these.”, he still let his thumb stroking over your wrist. The odd feeling from before went back to his stomach, and he suddenly let go of your hands. You simply shook your head.
“Didn’t we want to leave?”, Luisa asked her older sister. “Mil…”, before the brawn one could scream for her cousin her sister stopped her. “Silencio!”, she shushed her down, pressing her finger on her lips. “I totally understand what Mirabel meant.”, she smiled bright, taking her hand down. Watching the two of you sitting on the rock a few meters away from them. Luisa just looked confused at her und shrugged with her shoulders.
“Are the very busy Madrigals free this evening?”, you smiled at the boy who couldn’t look at you right now. If he would look at you, you could have seen him blush. “Well, I think we already have plans.”, he gained his cool again. Crossing his arms behind his back. “Really?”, you gave him a look of disbelief. “Yup, we will visit a pretty cool circus you know.”, with a teasing undertone he smiled at you. You totally fall for it and started grinning. “Okay, you got me.” – “I know, but for real, promise me something.”, his face got a bit more serious. “Don’t fall again.” – “Hm, we will see. Maybe I want to be caught by you again...”, now you were the one with a mischievous grin and this earned you a shocked facial expression. “Just kidding.”, you nudged him with your elbow and laughed, and so did he. “Primo, we need to go. They will be already waiting for us for lunch.”, Isabela’s voice appeared behind them.
He straightened himself up. “So, I’ll see you tonight?”, you asked looking up to him. “Can’t wait for it.”, he said before he walked over to his cousins and waving you a last goodbye. You also waved after them, then you turned your glance back to the spot where he just touched you. A slight smile was growing on your face. Something was different with this boy, and you didn’t think about his gift, no you couldn’t wait to find out what it was. You weren’t the only one feeling something strange in the company from each other. So, a girl and a boy nearly the same age couldn’t wait to see each other again.
“O lei, o lai, oh lord, o lei, o lai, o lord.”, you warmed your voice up together with Rosemary while Eva pinned her hair up. Most of the times you wore wigs, it was way easier than styling your hair different way in between the show acts. You already wore some wide trousers over your unitard, an older outworn greenish poncho and your usual boots. It should keep you muscles warm in between. You were finished with putting your make up on as you heard a familiar voice, “Here you go”, Jean appeared behind you handing you a small wooden box. He already wore his uniform. You smiled gladfully at him. “Muchas gracias!”, you stood up and placed a kiss onto his cheek. “Where are you going. I need to get your hair ready as well!”, Eva screamed after you, but you were already out of the tent. Your eyes scanning the place for a particular family. You didn’t need to search for long as a small boy caught your view. You run up to him. “y/n!”, he shouted running towards you. You pulled him up in a flowing movement, spinning him around in the air. “Tonito!”, you let him down and kneeled in front of him. His whole family a few meters behind him. You tilted over to whisper into his ears and he just chuckled, then you walked over to his family while holding his small hand into yours. “Buenas noches familia Madrigal”, you said smiling with closed eyes.  All of them greeted you kindly. “Ma cherie!”, Eva called after you from the tent behind. “Uno momento!”, you shouted back to her what earned you an angry tapping from her feet. You turned back to the family. “I don’t have much time, sorry.”, you let go of Antonio’s hand. “My abuela is already waiting at the entrance. Jean made sure to get you the best seats in the whole ring.”, you smiled proudly, looking at Mirabel, then Camilo before turning your glance to his sister. “And that’s for you.”, you stepped in front of Dolores handing her the small wooden box you got before. The girl took it warily and eyed it from all sides before opening it. All of her relatives looking curious at her.  “y/n Freye!”, Eva shouted again. “I just want that anyone can enjoy our show the same. So yeah. See you in the ring!”, you nearly screamed while running back to the woman waiting for you.
“She really looks like her.”, Julieta said leaning a bit over to Bruno who only nodded. “What’s in the box querida?”, Mariano asked his girlfriend. She looked with adoration over to the tent you just disappeared in. “Hermana?”, Camilo made himself taller to look in the box. Dolores took the surprise out of the box and showed it to them. “Those are ear plugs.” – “She doesn’t only look like her.”, Pepa said in awe. This was only a small gesture, but it meant so much to all of them. So, the family Madrigal entered the ring joining your grandma on the seats and you were right. They got the best places. They could see everything from where they were seated. Camilo noticed that his sister looked way more relaxed than ever. How could you care so much for his family without even knowing them? Of course, Dolores knew, that Bruno told you about her gift, but she never expected you to give her something to help. Everyone was so excited, chatting and mumbling until Jean stepped into the ring. The lights were spotted on him, and everything went quiet. He smiled bright. You were standing on a platform together with Bee, preparing yourself for the first act. This was the moment all of you lived for. This was the moment all of you cherished so much. The very less seconds of silence, before it all started. You looked at your partner, and he smiled at you while holding onto the trapeze. “Showtime.”

They were chatting about the upcoming day. Planning the party for tonight and talking about the greatest news in Encanto. Especially the new faces they met. Everyone was overly excited about the upcoming events. Everyone except him. He was way too tired. He just shoved his food from one side of the plate to the other, which earned the boy a concerned look by his mother. “Camilo, mijo, is everything alright?” With this sentence the whole attention laid upon him. He looked up to his mother with a slight smile. “Don’t worry, mami. Everything’s fine.”, he felt a hand on his shoulder and looked into the concerned face of his sister. He then shoved the hand away from his shoulder with a slight rolling of his eyes. “I’m just tired, okay?”, he knew he couldn’t put a face on. His sister would’ve heard him the whole night struggling with falling asleep. He couldn’t even understand how this little incident bugged him so much, but he couldn’t think about something different then you bumping into him. He couldn’t forget those eyes. Those amazing eyes which couldn’t simply face him. Those eyes full of pain? He was always able to make friends within seconds, but not with you. Maybe it was just unfortune, and maybe not. Who would know?
“Maybe the last chores were a bit to heavy?”, his father asked with a worrying undertone. “Maybe you should rest a bit today.”, Mirabel suggested, and everyone nodded in agreement. No one wanted that even one member of the family would overwork themselves again, so all of them took this really seriously. Mariano gave him a thumbs up, a little weird but meant good. Since he and Dolores made things official, he would stay more often in their home. After some trouble in the past he finally was a part of the family. “Either way, we need to split the work today.”, Alma stood up. Camilo faced his plate again and forced him to eat something. He needed the energy the food would provide him. “Some of us have to stay here and help preparing everything for tonight as I heard our new guests did already arrive yesterday. Right, Dolores?”, the said girl looked up, sharpened her ears, “Sí, they arrived yesterday by sunset, and they plan to set up their camp today. They already started.”, she went back to eating her breakfast and earning a proud face of her boyfriend. Camilo’s head snapped into the direction of the news, which drew a mischievous smile onto Mirabel’s face. “We already met some of them, didn’t we primo?”, the boy suddenly looked down again. Cheeks turning slight rose. What was that weird feeling in his gut? "Oh, we did too! Right, Isabela?" the youngest at the table took the word before his mother could ask for the strange behavior of her eldest son. "Yeah, we met some children at the market. They were so adorable.", the girl nodded with her perfect smile. "I also meet some of them. They seemed... nice.", Bruno said with his calm voice, his attention went back to your face. He still couldn't help it, but you reminded him of someone he knew.
Camilo followed all information closely. Maybe someone had had an interaction with you and could tell him more. "So, my suggestion would be that some of you welcome them and maybe help them a bit.", Alma said with a smile. Mirabel raised her hand without hesitation, "I would love to!", she smiled bright. "Me too. Oh, me too!", Antonio claimed while shifting in his seat.
"I need to prepare the meals for tonight and I need a few helping hands here as well.", the older woman said looking at her other daughters. Luisa and Isabela just nodded to confirm, that they would stay in Casita. "Maybe you could join them hermano.", the ginger haired woman nudged her brother. "Yeah, I could do this.", Bruno scratched the back of his head. "I would also like to tag along.", Camilo’s voice sounded calmer than usual. Mirabel’s smile grew bigger. Her sisters watched her in bewilderment. They couldn't understand why she was so excited.
"Didn't you want to get some rest?", Mariano asked him. Firstly, he didn't look up from his plate but soon he wore his usual smile again, "Sure. But it doesn't say that I can't welcome the new people to our Encanto. Who would be better for this job than me?", and also did he want to see you again. He hadn't had a real chance to introduce him properly and he wanted to change this. Also, he needed to know if you were okay after yesterday. Most of the people around him started laughing. His mom sighed in relief. Her son was indeed fine. After some more talking and planning Alma dismissed her family to go after all the chores for today.
Bruno, Mirabel, Antonio, and Camilo made their way up to the court where you would stay. While walking through the town there were some more people joining them to help the circus. "Good morning señora Elena.", Bruno greeted an older lady sitting near the market. She wore an orange dress and a bright smile. "Indeed, a wonderful morning.", she greeted them and stood up. Bruno was a bit surprised from her overly good mood. "We're going to help the circus folks.", Antonio explained while greeting her.  "Oh, is that so?", her smile never leaving her face. The small boy nodded. Even if more than two years has passed, Antonio still was pretty small. He did inherit the height from his dad. "Mind if I join you?", Elena ruffled through the dark hair of the youngest which earned her a lovely giggle. “Of course not!”, he explained and like this the three started walking after the two others again. Bruno was a bit confused. Why did everyone was in such a good mood today?
Mirabel and Camilo didn't stop walking. "Soo. Why do you really wanna to go there? Heh?", Mirabel asked with a delinquent undertone. Camilo kept facing the road in front of him, but he couldn’t suppress a smile. "I just love to meet new people. You should already know this prima." Mirabel rolled her eyes and nudged him with her shoulder. "Oh, c'mon you can tell the best prima in the world. Can’t you?" she smiled. "Who said you were the best prima?" - "You did" – “I don’t think I ever said something like this.”, he shrugged his shoulders. “Then you should find a better prima to repair your ruana.”, she playfully pouted while Antonio was running up to them clinging on said clothing. “Look, there!”, he pointed in front of them, and his voice was filled with excitement.  They just walked by the last houses of Encanto and could see the huge place where all your carts parked. The adults did already start setting up the ring. Some children were running all over the place playing and screaming. The horses and donkeys were relaxing besides some free spot under some trees. A bright smile grew upon those three faces. They didn’t really know what they could expect but somehow, they were just happy. “Let’s see how we can help them.”, Mirabel shouted and started running down the path. The other two followed her.
At the end of the road were two men already setting up the grandstand, where the audience would sit and enjoy the show later. Two other, and way younger boys were busy constructing the different tightropes. The two Madrigal boys did run up to the center of those actions. It was totally stunning, that people without gifts did build this over and over again. It was impressive.
“Yo, can we help you?”, one of the boys climbed down to greet Camilo and Antonio. “Actually, we’re here to help you! The magical Madrigals at your service.”, Camilo just bowed down and wore his brightest smile. Antonio did the same, and added, “Also we’re here to welcome you to our beautiful Encanto.” The boy with the blonde hair in front of them started laughing. “Did you hear that? The Magical Madrigals?”, he did a little wave with his hand and started laughing even more. Antonio and Camilo looked a bit confused, but also annoyed at him. “What’s wrong with that?”, Camilo asked while putting his hand in his hip. “Gael, put yourself together.”, a dark-haired boy stood on a platform above him and gently put his foot on the blonde’s head. He then stopped his action. “Bee didn’t you hear that?”, Gael tried to shove the foot from his top. “I did, clearly. They’re here to help, so let’s appreciate this.”, he took his foot on the platform and kneeled down. Facing the still confused boys in front of him. “Lo siento! We would be grateful if you would borrow a hand. I’m Berthold. But you can call me Bee, everyone does and this polite guy here is Gael.”, he smiled while patting the blonde hair in front of them, and the other boy nodded. “Just call me Gael. First of all, it would be a great help if you just carry those ropes over here?” – “Alright Bee,” he shifted into Berthold’s appearance, ”and Gael.”, shifting into the blonde one, before becoming himself again. ”Sure thing. I’m Camilo by the way and that’s my younger brother Antonio.”, he left the two boys speechless behind while turning to get those ropes. Gael was totally perplexed, and Bee just giggled. “Magical Madrigals huh.” Antonio couldn’t suppress a loud laugh. Both of them just loved to see the reactions from strangers to their gifts. “What are you even doing here?”, Antonio asked while looking up to the boy who absorbed the fact of Camilo mirroring him perfectly way better than the blonde one. “We firstly set up these low tightropes onto the main masts.”, he pointed onto the tightropes already hanging, “Then we will begin to set up the secure net a bit higher and then the next tightropes.”, he explained while pointing to the platforms in different heights. “And after we set all these up, the masts are stable enough to secure the main walls of the tent.”, Gael still stared after Camilo while handing Bee the ends of two ropes.
Mirabel stayed a bit behind. Waiting for her tio and rest of the towns people to arrive. While waiting an older woman approached her. “Can I help you petit?”, she had a clear singsong voice. “Oh, actually, well... My name is Mirabel and my tio, primos and some of the villagers are here to help you out.”, she smiled. “Oh…”, she really looked surprised but wore a lovely smile. “My name is Eva Dubois, and we appreciate every helping hand.” After welcoming everyone she sorted the townsfolk into different groups for helping at the most variant tasks. That’s when Mirabel caught sight of you. You were climbing out of your cart, hair tied up in a messy bun, some wide trousers, and a shirt. You were as surprised as the other members of the circus watching so many new faces helping. It drew a smile onto your face. “Hey.”, you turned around as was greeted with a kind face and dark eyes. “I am Mirabel, and I was wondering if you could need some help?”, she took your hand and smiled at you. You were a bit overwhelmed with so much kindness and so many new faces. “Well, actually I have a tight schedule so maybe you can ask Eva for something to do.”, you took your hand back and smiled back at her. Of course, she seemed very kind, but there were some chores only you could do, and you didn’t want anyone to interrupt you then. Also, you were a bit late because you overslept. Even the hustle around your cart couldn’t wake you up. “Oh, are you sure?”, her smile kinda scared you. She was too nice. Why was she so interested in helping you? Before you could answer you could hear some unfamiliar voices asking for the girl in front of you. “I’ll come back to you later, y/n.” Wait, did I told her my name, you thought confused, but you hadn’t much time, so, you turned on your heels and made your way up to the ring. Some of the children, Emilia and Daniel included, ran up to you and started shouting and explaining things they had experienced. “Good morning hermana.” - “The town is so huge.” – “There are so many flowers.” – “They had the most delicious soup I ever tasted.” – “The girl let flowers grow right in her palm.” - “And there was one boy talking with animals!” – “The sunset looked amazing from the marketplace.”
A sigh escaped your lungs. You loved them. You really did, but sometimes, especially after such a rough night, you would prefer some calmer surroundings. You didn’t even pay much attention to what they were saying. Your thoughts still cling onto your panic attack from yesterday. You needed to clear your mind. You needed you full attention onto wor
“Look who gifted us with her presence.”, Gael shouted while you were walking up to them. “You are late.”, Bee exclaimed. “No, no, no. I am not late. You’re just to early.”, you respond while walking to the opposite mast where Bee was standing. Camilo’s nearly dopped the box he was carrying. The sound of your voice caught his whole attention. “Ay. Careful.”, his brother bleat while carrying some smaller ones, but Camilo didn’t respond. “Did our princess at least caught a good sleep?”, Gael said challenging. You just smiled at him before climbing up the mast, “I don’t know. Did you?” – “Oh, I hate you…”, he said while handing you the ends of a net. “You couldn’t hate me. Even if you tried hermano.” - “Are you two done?”, Bee shouted as you pulled the net up and sorted the endings in the right direction. Gael walked over to the mast where Bee was waiting and gave him the other ends of the net. He made sure that it laid flat and without any knots.
You were so …different, Camilo thought while watching the scene in front of him. Just a day ago you were so pale, so hurt and so vulnerable and now. You seemed like a completely different person. He really needed to get to know you. “Ready when you are.”, you shouted, and Bee just nodded.
Outside of the ring were Bruno talking to some of the older men, when suddenly Elena walked up to them. “Jean?”, her voice sounded so calm, almost scared. “I had asked myself when you would show up.”, the old man besides Bruno said. Bruno looked at him confused. “Remus!”, Jean shouted after hugging the old senora, and soon your father joined the group. With a fast pace did he run up to them and threw his arms around the old woman and Bruno slowly started to understand. “Remus? Remus Freye?”, he asked in disbelief. It took Elena some time to let go of the grown man, but after a while she pulled back. A smile on her face. Remus then looked at the oldest Madrigal. “Bruno Madrigal.”, he then threw his arms around the still confused man. “It’s so good to see you again.”, he pulled back and looked at him and the old woman. “Vamos. Vamos. I need to introduce you to someone!”
The four adults joined the ring. “Mi estrella!”, your dad shouted right in the moment, where Bee and you started running over a beam. Just when you crossed paths you jumped down to one of the tightropes and threw the ends of the net over a mast. Catching it after you landed on the ground. Bee did the same on the other side. “Uno momento, papi.”, you said while clinging onto the ends. You were smaller than Bee, so you hung in the air, while Berthold landed with his feet onto a platform. Gael came up to tie the end together, so you could let go.
“Papi?”, Bruno muttered. He finally could put one and one together. “Oh, dios mio. You mean she…” – “She is Rosa’s daughter.” – “Our daughter.”, your dad corrected Elena. Bruno rubbed his temples. Now he knew why you looked so familiar. Now he understood why he knew your face so well. As you landed on the ground again you finally realized why your father called you. The smile on your face left for a second. Right next to him, the old lady. Yes, it must be your abuela. It can’t be any other way. One deep breath in and one deep breath out, you thought before walking up to them. She had her hands covered her mouth. You couldn’t interpret if that was a good or a bad sign. You found yourself in her arms before you could break your head about it. Suddenly everything felt just fine. This was your abuela. Your mothers mother. Her scent, her warmth. Everything felt so familiar and secure. After what felt like forever she pulled away. One hand at your cheek, watery eyes, and a heartwarming smile. “It’s good to finally meet you properly.”, you said while leaning in her touch. “You are as beautiful as her.”, your abuela said and your smile grew bigger, tears building up in your eyes. “I think, that is a family thing. “, you sated simply, and she started laughing. “Oh, and as charming as your papa.” – “Also, as stubborn as her papi…”, Jean threw in and getting an elbow in his rip. Everyone laughed. That feeling right now was pretty unfamiliar, but you liked it. Just now you realized Bruno next to your father. “Hola! Tio Bruno.”, you smiled at the grown man. He lifted his hand to wave discreetly. “Tio?”, your father looked at Bruno, who just smiled awkwardly. “y/n, we still have a job to get done!”, you heard your blonde friend screaming. Another sigh.
“There is so much I want to ask you. So much I want to tell you…but…”, you felt guilt not having enough time for her now. You wanted to spend so much more time with her. “I waited nearly seventeen years to meet you. I can wait some longer. Its not like you will leave tomorrow.”, she stroked with her thumb over your cheek and smiled softly at you and then at your dad. You nodded at them and turned back to get everything done.
Camilo watched the whole scenery from afar. At this moment he wished for his sister’s gift. He would have loved to eavesdrop at this very moment, but he could ask his tio later. He just wanted to know more about you, and he was willing to do anything to achieve his goal. “Earth to Camilo…”, Antonio grabbed him by his hand. “Lo siento.”, he smiled softly at him and lifted the boxes again. His brother followed his look back to you. A smile grew on his face. He decided to tell his bird friends to carry the small boxes after Camilo, while he wanted now to help you. So, he followed your steps.
Before Jean went off to get the last things done, Bruno explained them, that they would host a welcome party for everyone in their Casita and just like this, everyone gets back to work. Just your abuela was staying and watching you working.
Camilo tried the whole day to come closer. He really wanted to help you. The goal of becoming your friend was set and he would try anything to achieve this. But not only him, also Mirabel was desperate to become your friend. It’s not like you didn’t want to make new friends. You were glad to meet some people from Encanto, but you were just busy. Your work was your number one priority. The only one you couldn’t just shove away was the young Madrigal. Antonio was just too adorable to decline his help. “Actually, I don’t know how you could help me anymore.”, you ruffled through his hair, while Jean and Gael carried the huge tent out of a cart. “I can do way more than you think.”, the small boy laughed at you. “I don’t think you can carry this tent onto the top of the masts.”, you kneeled down and pointed to the tops of the masts. “I can ask my friends if they could help you.”; he smiled pointing at some toucans in the trees. “Yeah sure.”, you laughed, but stopped as soon as the birds came to help Jean and Gael. “Wait, what…”, you looked at him. “They’re glad to help.”, he smiled and that’s when you remembered, that some of the children told you that they met a boy who can talk to animals. “You can really talk to them?”, you asked in disbelief. “Of course. That’s my gift.”, he stated proudly. “Gift?” – “Yes. I am part of the magical Madrigals. Everyone in my family has one.”, he watched his bird friends helping to set the tent up. Your dad often told you about the three magical Madrigals. You believed they were just some of his stories, but you never thought that the whole miracle thing was true. You rubbed your hand against your forehead and chuckled. “Wow.” – “Is something wrong?”, Antonio looked a bit worried at you. “No, no, don’t worry.” – “Good.” – “You know,”, you sit next to him and watched the animals do the hardest part of your build up work, “I don’t care which powers your relatives have, you are the coolest Madrigal.”, this earned you a pair of shining eyes and a heartwarming hug. Still, you couldn’t believe all of this, but you didn’t question it either.
With the help of Antonio’s friends, the tent was set up within minutes. The townsfolk and Madrigals said their goodbyes and you said your thanks. Usually, this work would take you more than two days and with the help of all of them it only took you about one day. Now everyone could get ready for the party. It was really unusual that a town would welcome you so warmly, but you could get used to it.
It was a usual party in Casita. Luisa and Camilo greeted everyone at the entrance. Julieta and Pepa took care of the meals for everyone. Isabela and Mirabel took care of the comfort of anyone. It took about half an hour till every villager, circus member, friend and neighbor arrived. Everyone was chatting, dancing, and eating. They all mad you felt so welcome. Everyone just had a good time. You could watch your abuela talking with what seemed like the oldest Madrigal and of course your father. You could watch Antonio playing with Daniel and Emilia. You could see how Mirabel talked to Rosemary and Gael. Even Bee was joking around with a girl you didn’t knew yet, but she seemed really pretty. You could observe them well, while leaning against the railing, clinging on a glass filled with delicious juice.
“Shouldn’t you be down there, talking, dancing or stuff like this?”, a familiar voice appeared right besides you. You didn’t need to look at him. “Same goes for you.”, you smiled while taking a sip of your glass. “Well, actually… I’m not the type for big crowds.”, he rubbed his arm before leaning over the railing next to you. “También.” – “Really?” – “Yeah, I like performing, but that’s different. It an audience who is concentrated on my performance. But parties like this… sometimes it’s like I can’t breathe.”, you said while laying your eyes onto the glass. “That’s why Casita let you up here. Seems like it likes you.”, Bruno said while stroking over the railing. You chuckled. “Yeah, sure, your house likes me.”, before you looked up the railing next to you deformed itself to wave at you. You nearly jumped into Bruno’s arms who couldn’t suppress a laugh. “Dios mio. This place really is magical…”, you stared at the piece of wood going back to its shape from before. You were glad to not spill your whole drink over the man. “Yup, magical house, magical people.”, Bruno just said while waving his hands. “Well back when I was smaller, my dad told me stories about the magical Madrigals, but I never thought they were…real. You know.”, you said leaning at the railing again. Eyes still locked onto the now steady wood.  “Well, I don’t know what he told you…but yeah it’s true.” – “He told me not much about it I guess. That out of a tragedy Encanto was found through a miracle and that later the three children of the Madrigals received a gift to keep the miracle going. There was one with healing powers…” – “That’s Julieta.”, he pointed to the woman next to Mirabel. “Mirabel’s mama?”, Bruno nodded. “So, she really can heal people? How does that even work?” You watched her pinching the cheeks of the curly haired girl. “If I would break my ribs, would she just put her hand onto it and woosh, everything fine?”, you laughed. “Nearly. Her food can heal. So, if your injured she cooks something nice and as soon as you eat it, Woosh, everything fine.”- “Well, that’s impressive. Oh, and there was one who could control the weather right?”, now you looked at Bruno.  He pointed to his other sister talking with your dad. “That’s Pepa and she does affect the weather with her emotions.” – “She is really beautiful, but I think that this gift can also be a burden.” Bruno just nodded while thinking back how she always did suppress her feelings back then. “Wait a minute. You are a Madrigal too, right?”, now you looked at the old man. He scratched his back. “Yeah, I am the third of the three…” – “So, you can look into the future? For real?” You turned around to face him properly. “Yeah…kinda. I could see ´like prophies, but before you ask. I don’t do this anymore.”, you smiled. “Don’t worry. I don’t want to know about my future. I grew up not knowing where I’ll be within in the next days, and I’m used to be a bit spontaneous. You know. I wouldn’t even care what you would say about my future. Nothing is set in stone. As long as I can decide for myself, I can change my future.” Bruno wore one of the most endearing smiles you’ve ever seen, and you couldn’t help it but had to mirror it. You couldn’t understand what that smile had to say, but it was well meant.
“Well, what’s with the others? I know that Tonito can talk to animals.” – “His older sister, Dolores, can hear like everything from anywhere.”, he pointed to a very pretty girl next to Bee and another girl. “You mean she could hear our conversation?”, you looked at her and she just started smiling and waving at you. “Impressive.” – “The girl next to her is Isabela. She can grow flowers, trees and plants in general out of nothing.” – “Ok, cool. What’s about Mirabel?”, you pointed to the girl in the middle of a horde of children. You could see Antonio, Emilia and Daniel sitting next to them. Also, a familiar curly haired boy was chatting with them. You felt a strange twinge inside your stomach. “Oh…urhm. Mirabel didn’t get a magical gift…” – “That’s something that can happen?” – “Actually, she doesn’t need a gift. She was the one saving the miracle some years ago. She was the one keeping the family bond together. Alone the fact that she brought me back to the family after living in the walls for about ten years is a miracle itself. She is a gift herself.” – “Wait you lived where for ten years?” – “That’s a story for another time I guess.” – “Okay, okay, but I get the point. She is special herself and she shines so bright. This is kinda outstanding in such a special family.”, you smiled looking at the children who now started running in different directions, leaving the Madrigals behind. “You should know yourself that you don’t need magical powers to be gifted. You are gifted yourself, aren’t you?” – “I would say I’m well trained. That’s all.” – “I wouldn’t say only trained. You either are born with the gift to be an entertainer or you aren’t. Most of the people I know wouldn’t be able to live your life. Always on the run. Taking your shows to so many strangers. Not knowing what the future will bring.” You just smiled, somehow you got the point of this. You never thought like this. You just had fun and you didn’t know it any other way, but somehow Bruno was right. “Maybe you’re right.” – “You are really similar to Rosa.”, his voice was nearly inaudible. “You knew her?” – “Of course, I did.”
“y/n!!”, right in front of you on the first floor were standing some children screaming for your name. Bee appeared behind them. “Can you tell us a story. “– “Pleaaaasee, hermana!” – “Sorry, I couldn’t stop them.”, Bee said with a guilty face. “I think you should give them what they want.”, Bruno tilted his head into the direction of the crowd of children. “But...” – “Daniel and Emilia said you are the best storyteller. So please!”, one of the villager’s kids exclaimed. “Alright, alright. I’m coming.” You raised yourself and patted the shoulder of the man next you. “Next time, you tell me the story of you living in the walls and what you know my mama.”, you said while walking up to the stairs to join the crowd.
“y/n. Hey.”, Mirabel said while nudging her cousin. “Nice to see you again.”, you smiled at her. “Did you already met my cousin?”, she pointed with her thumb on Camilo next to her. He looked somehow confused, but at the same time shocked and nervous. “We actually met once.”, you said while sitting in front of them. Emilia already climbing up to sit in your lap. “Sorry for running away and thanks again for your offer. I’m y/n Freye by the way.”, you reached out your hand to the boy who gently took it. “Camilo and don’t worry about me.”, he said calm. You raised a brow at his different behavior. The day you met him he was full of confident and now? Maybe he was just tired. It was already a long and busy day. You just smiled at him, while Antonio cling onto your shirt. You ruffled through his hair. “Hey Tonito.”, he sat next to you. The other children all took their seats next to you fully concentrate onto you. “Can you tell the story of the puppet master?”, Daniel suggested. “Nooo. Please the story of the neverland!”, Emilia demanded. “I think the fairytale of the neverland would be a good choice.”, you poke her nose, before your inhaled deeply.
That’s how you started telling the kids, some of the adults around, Mirabel and also Camilo the story of the neverland. Even Dolores came with Isabela after hearing the begging and sat down to listen properly. All of them were clinging onto your words. The way you explained everything, the little gestures of your hands. The sudden movements of your whole body. How your mimic changed through the story. It was one of your favorite stories your papa always had told you.

You shifted your weight from one side to another. Sitting on the cart and watching the passing landscape. You were only a few minutes away from your destination. Your heart did nearly explode in your chest. You sensed a hand on your shoulder, “See these mountains over there.”, your dad pointed towards a huge wall in front of you. “Right behind them…” – “Encanto.”, you completed his thought with a sparkle in your eyes. Your dad just nodded with a smile. The last days were full of bugging your dad and Jean about the old times. You couldn’t wait no longer. You needed to see this town yourself. You wanted to meet your abuela. You were so desperate. The way went by faster than expected. It took you only two and half day to arrive and now you were so damn close. You would rather start running to this place now then waiting any longer, but you needed to be a bit more patient. Just a little while longer.
After what felt like forever you finally arrived at a bigger court where you would stay the next time. Actually, you didn’t know how long you would stay in Encanto, but you were grateful for every second you could be here. The court was a bit outside from the town itself. So that there would be enough space for every cart, wagon, and the tents. Today you wouldn’t start with the set up of the big tent. You would just make some space that everyone would be able to catch enough sleep, so that the preparations could start tomorrow. As everyone started to make them comfortable, you were just standing there. Your eyes locked onto the path into the town. You could see the first houses at the end of the street. It was still early; the sun hadn’t begun to set. You would totally be able to visit some places before helping with the dinner. “Excited?”, an old voice appeared next to you. You couldn’t really answer but nodded. The urge to just run towards the town grew bigger and bigger. Even if you would stay here to help, you wouldn’t be able to focus properly. Your thoughts were all down this road. “I think we wouldn’t mind if you would go check the market out. Maybe buy some ingredients for dinner, you know.”, your head snapped towards the old man. A smile growing up onto your face. “Está seguro?”, you looked at Jean, and he nodded with a teasing grin. Your smile dropped a bit, brows furrowed at him. “What you want in return?”, you crossed your arms. Of course, you wouldn’t ask a second time for a permission to leave, but you knew him to well. After all he raised you just the same as your father did. “Maybe take the younglings with you? They need some distraction from the journey and for real, we need to restock some stuff.”, he smiled at you bright, and you couldn’t suppress a chuckle. “Yeah, of course, but then I’ll also take Bee with me.” You held your hand out and he took it to shake it. “Deal.”
Berthold was just placing a box from your cart down, while you jumped on it. Facing him with way to less space between your faces. “Damn, corazón.”, he stumbled back while he grabbed his chest, “I nearly got a heart attack.” – “Perdón.”, you smiled bright at him, sitting down on the box. He cupped your face. “What do you want y/n?” – “Jean asked if we could go buy some stuff for dinner. Also, we shall take the kids for a walk. So, you’re in?” – “I think I have better things to do.”, you started pouting while he still held your cheeks in his hand. He had quite big hands, but those were the hands who always saved you from falling. Either in the arena or just in daily life. “Please, cariño. Pleeaaseee.”, you gave him the sweetest gaze you could at this moment. “Ugh fine.”, he let out a sigh and before he could react you jumped off the box and hugged the boy. “Brats with me!”, you screamed and six children in the age between five and seven appeared in your sight. Two girls and four boys saluted in front of you. “I already hate myself for saying yes.”, Bee rubbed over his brows. You picked the youngest girl, Emilia, up to carry her, while the others followed you and the dark-haired boy into the city.
Your hands got sweatier as closer you came to the entrence. You could have sworn that everyone would hear your heartbeat at this point. You felt a huge weight onto your chest, and you just couldn’t hold on anymore. You gave the little girl to your friend as you entered the town and a shiver run down your spine. “Y/n? Are you okay?”, Bee caressed your back with his free hand. This damn concern in his voice, but you couldn’t blame him. Actually, you felt stressed. You couldn’t say if all this was just overwhelming or pure happiness or even kinda anxiety. Still, you didn’t want him or the children to worry about you. That’s why you just smiled at him, “Everything is fine. Mind if I take a look around?”
“So, you’re going to enjoy the Encanto and I’m here babysitting and grocery shopping? For real?”, he gave you a playful pout, before slapping carefully onto your back. You stumbled a bit forward. You smiled at each other. “Just don’t get lost, okay? We meet at the market then, that you will at least help carrying the stuff.” – “Thanks Bee. I'll make this up to you!”, you shouted while your feet already dragged you through the town. You left the group behind you. You didn’t even know where you wanted to go, but you had to explore a whole town. Where to start first? The marketplace? The little alleys with those charming stalls. Your emotions were boiling over. After nearly seventeen years you finally walked through the town your mum called her home.
Right, your mum. You suddenly stopped your movements. Your view got slightly blurry. You starred just straight in front of you. Slowly moving backwards into a smaller alley, trying to gain some hold at a wall. This was the town you should have grown up in. This is the town where you parents and you should have lived happily together. Your eyes started to water up. This was definitely too much for you. Maybe you should have waited a bit longer. Maybe you should have stayed with Bee. You weren’t ready for this. With one hand you pulled the hood of the blue ruana over your head to isolate yourself a bit. With the other you grabbed onto your shoulder. First you needed to calm your breathing. Yeah, it totally was a bad idea to leave the others.
You weren’t the only one who decided to go on a walk alone. On the other side of the marketplace was a little girl crying and screaming for her sister until an older guy patted her head. “What’s wrong pequeña?”, the girl stopped crying and looked at the man with longer dark hair. “I need my hermana…”, she just said while clinging on his green ruana. He then picked her up. “So maybe you should tell me your name and then I’m going to help find her.”, he said while poking her nose. “I’m Emilia.”, the little girl chuckled.  “That’s a wonderful name for such a wonderful young señorita. I am Bruno and that is my friend Piek.”, he pointed on a white rat on his other shoulder. The girl started laughing and so both started looking for you. While also Bee and the others were searching for Emilia and you with worry in the back of their heads.
You didn’t know how much time has passed, also you didn’t know where you were anymore. Suddenly something or better someone brought your back to reality. Before realizing what really happened you found yourself on the ground again and your butt started to hurt. “Are you okay?”, a really calming voice caught your attention and so you looked up. You were greeted with one of the most endearing gazes you ever saw. A pair of emerald eyes staring into yours. Wait, why did he stared at you? He leant onto his thighs and closed his mouth to a soft smile. You pulled the hood of your ruana down and rubbed your eyes. They burnt. Did you cry? “Hey, I asked you something.”, his voice was so calm and still demanding. Well, you needed to answer. “Yeah. I’m fine.”, you couldn’t look up at him. You know that he wouldn’t believe you. You looked exhausted, at least you felt this way. You felt like you were passed out for a while. Did your feet carried you around without even relaizing? You looked up to the sky and noticed that it must got quite late. The sky already turned yellow. “Are you sure?”, what was this thing that you couldn’t look at him. He followed your look up and looked back at you. “You seem kinda lost.”, he added with a chuckle. “I guess, I am lost.”, you answered with way more calm voice then you wanted, not averting your glance from the sky. “Well, good that you bumped into me.”, he grinned, “I can help you out. I know this place like nobody else.” You now looked back at him. His eyes meeting yours for a few seconds before you looked away again. Heat was carrying up to your cheeks. Embarrassment? You could have sworn that he stared again. Did you looked so wasted? Well, you were still siting on the ground like a lost child. “It would be great...” before you could accept his offer a familiar voice echoed through the alley. “Y/N!”, you turned your head and noticed Daniel, one of the older boys, waving from the other side of the alley. Your face light up and your body somehow relaxed. You needed to shove your own needs behind, you couldn’t show you weakness in front of the children. You laid yourself flat to the ground, which earned and confused look from the boy in front of you.
Before he could say something, you swung your legs to the sky to lunge out, so that you would land onto your feet in the next seconds. All the worries from before were gone and your lips curling up in playful smile. You quickly needed to change your mood. “Thanks anyways.”, you told him while turning on your heels. The boy you left behind could only stare in disbelief and somehow curiosity after you, while your figure got smaller and smaller. Till you disappeared around the next corner together with the boy.
“Primo?”, this time someone snapped him out of his thoughts. Camilo didn’t face his cousin, he still stared down the path you took. “Yeah…”, still confused from the present events. “Who was this?”, Mirabel asked while standing next to him. “Y/n.”, he answered without paying much attention to her. “Who is she?” – “I don’t know… but I kinda want to know…” Mirabel raised a brow, but before she could question the boy, he said something nearly voiceless. She wasn’t even sure if Dolores could have heard him. “Her eyes were breathtaking.”, Mirabel needed to listen really closely and as she thought she understood him, her own eyes widened. “Wait, can you repeat that?”, she said with a teasing tone, bumping her shoulder against his. This brought him back to earth. He scratched his neck with a nervous smile. “I just said…Wait didn’t you want to meet with tio?” – “Dios mio. I totally forgot. Don’t think your off the hook Camilo. We will talk about this later!”, she said while running into the other direction. So, the boy was left alone again.
Indeed, he meant what he said before. Your senses were too over flood that you could realize, but he really did stare. He stared into your eyes. Never ever did Camilo Madrigal saw a person with two different eye colors. Not only two different ones, but a pair so beautiful, that he for a moment forget to breath.  However, the thing that bugged him more was that those pretty eyes were puffy and swollen. He wanted to know what hurt you. He wanted to help you. He could always make everyone smile. So why didn’t you smile because of him. He didn’t try hard enough he thought. No, you started smiling after that child appeared. He didn’t even know why, but he wanted to be the reason that you smiled. He wanted to see those eyes light up again. With an odd feeling he went back home to eat dinner with his family, but maybe, maybe he wasn’t really hungry today. Maybe he just couldn’t stop thinking about those eyes he never met before.
On the other side of the road you threw your arm around Bee who was waiting annoyed at the place Daniel led you to. Firstly, he didn’t respond to the hug, but he couldn’t resist long before embracing you. “I hate you.”, you just shoved your head deeper into his chest. “We still need to find Emilia.”, Daniel said. You suddenly let go from your friend and faced the boy. “What do you mean?” – “After you didn’t come to the settled spot, she started running away to look after you. The others are still looking for her.” – “Actually, we hoped she would be by your side.” Your heart sunk to the bottom of your stomach. It was your fault. Everything today was your fault. Why have you been so selfish?  The other children returning also without her to the place you were standing.
“Hermanaaa.”, the joyful voice caught your attention just as you wanted to drown in your thoughts again. The man put her down and she started running towards you. He followed the girl. You fell onto your knees pulling her into a tight hug. “Emilia. Please, you can’t just run away. You need to stay with Bee.”, said boy flicked against the back of your head. “You can advise me later, okay?”, you said while cuddling the little girl in front of you. That was such a relief. “Promise me to never run away again.”, you said in a worried tone while letting go of her. She just nodded energetic. You then looked up to the man standing a bit awkwardly in front of your group. “Thank you, señor…uhm.” – “Just Bruno.”, he said while rubbing his arm. “That somehow sounds wrong to me.” - “You can call me tio Bruno if you want.”, he chuckled. “Alright tio Bruno. Thanks for taking care of her.” – “Actually, that was a joke.” You started laughing together with the girl. “Well, too late, I guess. I’m y/n. Nice to meet you.”, you reached out to his hand. He just laughed a bit. His eyes looked really concentrated into yours while shaking hands. “Do I know you from somewhere?” – “I don’t think so.” – “No for real. I swear I have seen you before.” – “Maybe you mistake me for someone else.” – “Maybe.”, he let go of your hand but still looked with a tight focus at your figure.
“I really don’t want to interrupt your bonding. But the folks will get angry, if we need any longer.”, Bee came to pick up Emilia and gave Bruno a grateful smile. “I don’t want to stop you from anything.” – “Hopefully see you soon tio Bruno.”, you smiled playful while joining the others on their way to your place again. Bruno waved after you before he turned away to go meet with Mirabel. Still thinking about where he did see your face before. Why did you seemed so familiar?
“You wanna tell me why you cried?”, Bee whispered to you while walking home. The children walking a bit in front of them carrying some bags while singing a little song. You played with the hem of your ruana. (Or better said your dads.) “C’mon. I see that you went through something back there.”, he took your hand into his. “I guess I had a panic attack.”, you simply said. Before your friend could answer Emilia turned her heads towards you. “One deep breath in.”, she simply said, and you responded with “One deep breath out.” A little smile grew onto your faces. The first day in Encanto wasn’t like you imagined, but everything was just fine. You wanted to believe this. At this point, you just wanted to hide under your blankets and catch a handful of a good sleep.

„Grab all your stuff, c’mon… we don’t have all day.”, the old man shouted while clapping his hands together. A deep sigh escaped your throat. You tried to shove some boxes into the cart in front of you. They were heavier than expected, and the ground underneath wasn’t the most solid one. Your feet started to slip, and you loomed to kiss the floor in the next seconds. Suddenly some strong arms provided you better support and saved the boxes from falling. “Carefully!”, firstly the guy helped you to gain your hold again and then he shoved the boxes himself into the cart.
“Thanks Bee.”, you said a bit under your breath, not facing him but the horizon. Your head was full of thoughts. He then rested his hand on top your head and lowered his statue to be on your eye level. This brought your attention back, so you looked into his greyish eyes. “I get it that you’re overly excited but keep yourself together. We still have things to do.”, he smiled softly at you. “I know. I know…”, your voice sounded a bit exhausted, and somehow nervous. He ruffled through your hair before straightening himself up again which led you to roll your eyes. “Well, just, maybe…maybe lower your expectations. I don’t want you to get disappointed, you know…”, his voice was filled with concern. You couldn’t help it but smile at him, “Everything will be just fine.” He responded with a smile before he left you alone again and went back to carrying boxes from one place to another. You looked back to the horizon where the sun just started to rise, the slight smile never leaving your face. That’s how you knew him, Berthold Gabka. The boy two years older than you, the boy who always looked after you. The boy you grew up with. The boy everyone just called Bee because his German name sounded ridiculous. The boy who was always by your side. Some people would even say that you shared one braincell, but after all, he was way more serious than you and you were the more childish. You would always take a risk, while he thought everything through. Sometimes you hated him for being so serious and always worried about everything. Couldn’t he understand that the next days meant so much to you? Why couldn’t he just share your excitement?
“Don’t blame him.”, a rougher voice appeared right behind your back. Another sigh from your side. “I know. Dios mio, why is everyone so cautionary today.” You jumped into the cart while your dad handed you some smaller boxes for you to sort in.  “Because we care for you mi estrella.” – “Well, I’ll be fine. It’s not like I’m going to fight a dragon or something like this.” You earned a small giggle from the old man in front of you. “I am not saying that it’ll be dangerous,”, he put the box in front of you and took your hands in his, “but maybe it can get really emotional.” He caressed the back of your hands with his thumbs. “Papi, I can handle this, okay? I am not like you.”, you playfully pouted. “Remus! We need your helping hands here!”, he let out a sigh but smiled before he turned towards the woman who was calling after him.  He then just nodded towards you and went to help both women. “Coming!”
You started sorting everything into the cart you were standing in. This cart, this little wagon was your safe space. You didn’t have a fix place you could call home. Those people here, they were your home. Everyone was quite worried about you at the moment. Travelling to a new place was always as exciting as terrifying. You never knew how the townsfolk would react to your family or to your shows, it’s not like you could change it. Over the years you have earned so many experiences with strangers. Some people loved what you did and some thought of you as some kind of freaks. Who could blame them? The circus and especially nomads hadn’t really a good reputation, but you loved it that way. To know you could bring pure laughter, and joy to strangers. You were a performer and so you were always excited for a new place to stay. You stopped counting the places you’ve been to long ago.
This time was a bit different. This time you wanted everything to be perfect. After fourteen years you would finally come back to a really special place. The place you were born. You would finally meet your abuela and maybe, maybe you would be able to be a bit closer to your mom. You always wished to see this place yourself. You knew about the past events of Encanto and its history. Your dad told you many things about this magical place and you always dreamed about sharing the same views your parents did. Anyways, you understood that it was difficult to just visit this place. After years Encanto finally opened for foreigners, visitors and tradesman. So, you started begging to Jean, the head of the circus, if you would be able to visit Encanto, but he always denied.
The town needed time to adjust to the new situation, but this year was different. Jean talked to the heads of Encanto, and they said yes. They accepted the offer, that the circus could came to the town. Since that evening, you were sick of excitement. You trained harder, and you counted every hour till you would be able to walk those streets, where your parents first met and tomorrow you would finally take off. From your current locations it would take the whole team about three days to arrive safely, and you just knew that you wouldn’t catch a good sleep the next days. You knew you would annoy the hell out of Bee and your dad. As a child you could never stop asking questions about the Encanto, about their villagers, about the landscape and now you would finally be able to see everything with your own eyes but first you needed to pack everything.
A three-day ride away was a family getting ready for the day. Family Madrigal was known for their miracle and especially for their way to brighten up everyone’s day. To help each other in their community, but the Encanto needed some changes after the incident from about two years ago. After the family nearly lost their gifts, the town was on their way to collapse. So, the family and the heads of Encanto choose to change a major thing after rebuilding the Casita:
The town should grow more independent. The townsfolk should stop putting all the pressure on the family Madrigal and the family should gain some quality time again. Well, not much changed. The children and grandchildren of Alma Madrigal still had their daily chores. They would still meet for breakfast, lunch and dinner and discuss contingencies. The thing that definitely changed was, that everyone grew more together, and that everyone was more themselves than ever. Also, the fact that the lost child, Bruno came back home was a miracle itself.
In fact, the members of the family had more time to do whatever they pleased. Mirabel made sure of this. She had a time schedule for Luisa, so she wouldn’t overwork herself again. She helped Isabella, who now run her own flower stall besides the time the three girls helped their mother. Julietta opened her own restaurant. After so many new people came into the town, they had to make sure, that everyone could feel safe and sound.  The children of Pepa and Felix helped wherever they where needed. They helped in the restaurant, they helped with baby sitting or whatever someone need. But still, everyone had time for themselves to do whatever they wanted.
The life in Encanto was peaceful, but somehow it also could get boring. Besides all the new people they got to meet and besides all the strangers wondering about their gifts, nothing was really new. Nothing was really exciting anymore.
Under a tree in the back of Casita were sitting some children. Still a bit sleepy they were lean against each other.  A small boy laying in the lap of his older cousin, reading a book and his brother by her side just looking at the passing clouds. “How are you always ruining your clothes. For real primo.”, Mirabel said while fixing a hole in a yellow ruana. The older brother just chuckled. “Just don’t tell mami.” – “I think she already knows.”, Antonio threw in. “Probably.”, he shrugged with his shoulders. “We should agree for a payment for the future.” – “You won’t get the seconds I work so hard for.”, the other two started laughing and Camilo just smiled. “Ninos, breakfast is ready!” Mirabel handed the ruana to her curly haired cousin. “Just be more careful, okay?” A big smile started to grow on his face while he put his head into his beloved clothing. “You’re the best prima.”
Everyone took their place at the table while starting to eat together. After finishing breakfast their abuela stood up to take the word. “Listen up. First things first, senora Elena asked me for some help in the afternoon. I hope that someone of you is still free to go over to the Tamayo’s to help out.”, Dolores raised her hand. “I can take a look.” – “Good, good. Maybe one of your brothers can help you as well. She needs someone to help move furniture.”, Camilo just nodded as sign that he had understood. “Wouldn’t it better when I join?”, Luisa threw in, but before Alma could answer the girl earned some stares. “We talked about this, your tasks for today are full.”, Mirabel reminded her. “But it would make so much more sense.”, she started to explain but before she could go on, Camilo cut her down. “We can do this on our own. Don’t worry.”
“So, next thing. It’s more like an information. Our Encanto will get some new visitors the next day. After every one of this town adjusted to new normalidad, the heads and me thought about something special for everyone.”, now everyone was listening closely. What could she mean? “The circus is coming back to Encanto.”, she clapped into her hands after she ended the sentence. Instantly the eyes of her children did light up, as well as the eyes of Augustin and Felix. “What does that actually mean?”, the youngest at the table asked. “Oh mijo, you’re too young to know about it.”, his mama soothed. Bruno chuckled, “Well, we’re kinda old you know.” – “It was years ago. We were all around your age.”, Felix looked to his middle child and ruffled through his hair, which earned him an annoyed gaze. “It really was some time ago and only for one week, when the circus came to our town to brighten up our day.”, Augustin remembered. “I can’t remember their name. Wait, it wasn’t Spanish….”, Julietta thought out loud. The younger ones didn’t really understand why their parents got all excited, but this feeling was infectious. “Circus Dubois!” Pepa remembered. “And this time it will be the exact same one.”, Alma said with a slight smile on her lips,” Only thing that the leader changed over the years. The ringmaster from the then already has passed and his grandchild is now running the family business.”, everyone started now to whisper to each other. This news brought more happiness with it than Alma did expect. “But…”, her tone changed to a more serious one and so everyone turned quiet. “That also means, that there will be more people in our Encanto and that means there will be more work for all of us.” – “But we can manage this all and still have a good time together. After all, we are familia Madrigal.”, Mirabel shouted and raised her glass. Alma gave her an approving look and also raised her glass. Everyone did the same and shouted together. “La familia Madrigal!”
Everyone thought the whole day about the advantages and disadvantages what would come with this news, but someone who was overly happy about the news was Camilo.
“This is going to be excited.”, he started to point out while he and his sister were on the way to senora Elena.” Finally, something new, some people who weren’t used to my pranks and finally something new to explore. Some new people to get to know.” – “Hermano, calm down.”, his sister chuckled. She loved it to see him so excited, but somehow, she had an odd feeling about all this. Who would know what they have already experienced? What stories could they tell? What could he learn from those people? Would everything just be exciting and fine?

authors note:
So in this chapter i wanted to introduce you to all the important characters I made up for this story. I hope I could make everything clear so far. If something is weird or you have questions in general, don't hold back and ask me. Of course we will learn also more about the new characters. And well writing conversations with so many people is really challenging. I really try to write as in character as possible.

“Tell us again!”, the four-year-old boy demanded while clinging on one arm of the male.
“Alright, alright mijo.”, the male just started giggling while the boy sat in front of him, besides his older sister. Eyes sparkling bright looking at their papi. The gaze of the male wandering to a framed picture. A smile growing on his face, “I’ll tell you again, the story how I knew your mami was the one.”, his voice was calm and filed with adoration. The boy laid down on his stomach. Head resting in his palms while his elbows supported his statue. The girl sitting right next to him, placing her head onto his back.

“It was years ago. I played with some friends outside when I first met her. Nobody wanted her to join us. They were scared she would make it rain if we wouldn’t let her win. And of course, we wanted to keep playing in the sun.”, he closed his eyes, and the smile grew bigger on his lips. “But I decided it was unfair to exclude her, so I made my way up to her. I found her crying, with clouds all over her head. Before I knew what I was doing I sat next to her. Getting wet was no porblema for me.” – “Oooh, I love that part.”, the girl interrupted him shortly while sitting herself up and the boy next to her hummed in confirmation. “Then she looked at me. The most amazing pair of green eyes I’ve ever seen met mine. My whole head started burning and my stomach started turning. I knew that was the moment I should introduce myself. So, I put all my courage in the next sentence and said: //You wanna Felix with me, my name is play.// I slapped my inner self at this moment.” – both of the kids started laughing – “And before I realized what I have said, she started laughing. The cloud was gone, and a wonderful rainbow started glooming right over her head. The sound of her laughter and the bright shining eyes, that’s what I wanted to see again and again. And that was the moment I knew, one day, I’ll marry this amazing girl.”, he stopped for a moment and looked at his kids smiling bright at them, one hand still above his head from forming an imaginary rainbow.
“And you know what?”, he lowered himself to them. “You did it!”, the boy shouted while jumping up from his position. The girl placed her hands over her ears from the sudden noise. “Yes mijo, I did it.”, he ruffled through his dark curls and smiled bright at him.
That’s when the door swung open, and said woman came into the room. “What is going on here?”, the boy started running to his beloved mami and she lifted him up with a lovely smile. The girl also walked to her, cuddling up to her free side. “Papi, told us again, how he fell in love with you.”, her smile grew bigger, and she watched her husband standing in front of them. “Oh really? How often do you want to hear this story again?”, she laughed while patting the head of her eldest daughter. “Again, and again. It must be a strange feeling when the world suddenly stops spinning because of a look from a stranger.”, the girl laughed and looked at her brother. Her papi coming closer lifting her up. “It is, and someday, you two will feel the same”, he told her.” But till then, we have much time for cuddling aaaand….”, her mom giving her husband a knowing look and suddenly they were throwing both kids onto the bed and started to attack “Tickle attacks!”, they both screamed while making their kids cry in laughter.
Over years the boy learned what love was. He was loved by his parents, his older sister, his whole family, and soon by his younger brother. As soon as he received his gift he also was loved by the whole town. Knowing he could always make everyone smile and help others. Camilo Madrigal was loved, but he never knew the feeling his dad always taught him about. He never felt the sudden urge to want to see someone again and again. And soon he had to learn that some people not only loved him but his gift.
Years went by, and as everything seemed to be lost and damaged, he found love again. He found new love with his family, for his new home and for the townsfolk and somehow for himself. But what actual is this love he can always see with his parents?
Somewhere else in the world was a girl in the age of four trying her first steps on a tightrope. A bright smile on her face but still a bit clumsy she fell down from the height into the arms of her beloved father. “I want to try again!” – “You should stop for today mi estrella. You are training the whole day and it already gets dark.” – “But…” – “No buts. You can start tomorrow again. Now get some rest, okay?” – “Okay papi, but only if you tell me a bedtime story.”, the girl smiled bright while clinging onto her father’s statue. He carried her over to their cart and placed her down onto a simple bed. A boy, two years older than her, followed them and sat next to her on the bed. “So what story you want to hear today?”, the man placed the blanket over the two children and sat in front of them. “The story of baba yaga, or the one of the neverland or maybe about the…” – “Mami!”, before the man could go on with list some stories the girl interrupted him. His lips curled up and he let out a little sigh. “Tell us about mami, pleease..” He looked at the boy, who then just nodded and put an arm around the girl next to him.
“Fine, but this is the last time for this month.”, he lights up a candle next to her bed and if you watch closely, you could have seen his eyes went a bit watery. He faced the kids again after blinking a few times. “So, I tell you the story, how I lost my heart and how I regained it. I was only eleven years old. We went to a new town with the whole family. This time it was quite difficult. They didn’t want so many strangers in the city because of traumatic events in the past. The old man did understand and so we based our tent and carts a bit outside of the town. It was the opening night, and we had our regular show. Everything went just fine and afterwards we decided to gift all the woman a white flower. Some of the girls were mumbling and giggling. So we did everything right. Then, when most of the audience already had left the tent, there was one flower left.”, he looked over to the candle. “The carnation.”, the girl said quietly. “Yeah, there was one white carnation left. So, I took it and before I could think through my actions my feet carried me over to a young lady. I kneeled in front of her, holding the flower up to her. //I hope you enjoyed the show.//, she took it and said in the most prettiest sing song voice I ever heard //Thank you. Well, yes, you all were amazing.//, and as I looked up to her, I was met with the deepest and most honest blue eyes I have ever seen. I totally got lost in them and stared for what felt like hours, but never did she look away. I saw everything in them. I saw my future, my fortune, and my home. But before I could ask her for her name, she was gone, and I was left alone. Every night I hoped to see her again but unfortunately…” – “She didn’t come…”, the girl ended his sentence. “The male nodded and kept staring into the burning flame of the candle.
“We left after one week and I started to believe, that I never actual met her. I kept telling myself that maybe I was just dreaming, and of course I hated myself for letting her go.” – “And that’s when you started to annoy Jean about her.”, the boy smiled at him, and the man giggled. “Yeah, that was when I started to talk with your tio Jean always about her and he managed that we could go back to that town. Thanks to him! I just knew that I wasn’t dreaming and that was how I lost my heart.  Years had passed and I now was sixteen years old. Before opening night, I bought some white carnations for you know, just in case, and that’s when I met her. It was on the marketplace while I was paying for the flowers, that changed my destiny. There she was standing right next to the stall full of flowers and telling me, how she loved this flower since a special day a few years ago. My heart wanted to jump out of my chest. The girl I always dreamed about, was right here, smiling softly at me. I could remember everything about her. Her eyes as blue as the sea, her dark hair with those white-blonde streaks, those freckles all over her face and that amazing smile. The same smile I saw when I was eleven. The same smile I still can see. The same smile you are wearing everyday mi estrella.”, now he looked at the small girl. A bittersweet smile on his lips. A smile of a man that lost and regained everything he ever wanted. The girl smiled at him with half lidded eyes. She was exhausted from the day full of training. Even when she wanted to hear more of this story, she couldn’t keep her eyes open. Also she had heard that story thousands of times, but still it was her favourite. The man bowed over to the girl and placed a soft kiss onto his forehead. “Te quiero mi estrella.” She couldn’t even respond anymore. Already asleep while the man blew out the candle.
Y/n Freye was only four years old, but she knew what love was. She loved her founded family. She loved her father, and she loved his stories. The stories he always told her from all over the world, and she couldn’t wait to finally be able to tell her own.
