i want to love. i want to cook dinner for someone, my fork stalling halfway to my mouth while i watch them take their first bite. i want to know when they need to laugh, to be held, to be heard, to be reassured. i want to listen and listen and listen and not speak a word about myself for hours, just to get to know the inner workings of someone's soul. i want to smooth my hands over someone, to offer what earthly relief i can. i want to kiss someone on the forehead and lay my hand on their cheek, so they do not only feel my touch when it has its own motivations. i want to open myself to someone, to make them understand they are trusted and treasured.
i so rarely dream of being loved.
only of loving.

âOne of the most solid pieces of writing advice I know is in fact intended for dancers â you can find it in the choreographer Martha Grahamâs biography. But it relaxes me in front of my laptop the same way I imagine it might induce a young dancer to breathe deeply and wiggle their fingers and toes. Graham writes: âThere is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.ââ

âIâm a hater.â No, youâre a snob. You have a perceived level of superiority in your opinion on things youâve seen sound bites of on Twitter. You fail to engage sincerely with anything. You write one liners on letterboxâd for movies you decided you disliked before you watched and youâre waiting for an audience you hope exists to make you viral for a joke that isnât funny because you didnât try to truly engage with the content to begin with. And even if whatever you deem below you is bad, critique comes from a place of love for the medium or thing it is attempting. You didnât have that to begin with, so what could you possibly have besides a shallow joke and proof you lack media literacy? Youâre utterly bankrupt, worse than the thing youâre trying desperately to dunk on. At least it was trying, in earnest, to do something. You wonât even attempt joy.
