“Same Cloth” by Meghan Carrier. July 31, 2022. Digital collage.
Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda in 1948 trying on a necklace featuring a 128.48 carat diamond affectionately dubbed the Star of the South owned by Gaekwad Maharajas of Baroda. Underneath the Maharani is a textile fragment that dates back to the 2nd century AD, ca. 197-415.
The left side depicts Lord Rama’s banishment of Devi Sita from the epic Ramayana. Sita, in this case, is a Hindu goddess. Sita was abducted and imprisoned by the evil Ravana and forced into exile for a year. Sita held strong, however, and was freed by her love, Prince Rama. Upon her return, however, Rama’s subjects believed it was a moral violation for Sita to take back her place as Rama’s wife after having been Ravana’s “territory” for so long. Thus, Rama was influenced into banishing (a pregnant) Sita from his kingdom, and she was exiled another time. For those who observe Hinduism, Sita represents bravery, purity, devotion, loyalty, and sacrifice. She is acknowledged as a silent figure of strength for her continued faith in her love for Lord Rama.

"Market Day" by Meghan Carrier. July 31, 2022. Digital collage.
Background image by Annie Griffiths for National Geographic.
Details on propaganda posters (left to right):
“Why bother about the Germans invading the country? Invade it yourself by underground and motorbus” - London Underground 1915.
"What are you doing, dad, to avoid this future for me?" - Brazil, 1960.
And I'm having a really hard time tracking down the third.
