11.7.17 | My current reading list:
Seven Days in the Art World, Sarah Thornton:
Thornton brings us with her as she explores the seven different but vital events in the art world that make up what art is today! The seven experiences include ‘The Auction’, ‘The Crit’, ‘The Fair’, ‘The Prize’, ‘The Magazine’, ‘the Studio’ and ‘The Biennale’. I like this book because it’s written in a narrative style where the author engages with the events and interacts with figures that allow each business to run smoothly, creating an interesting and immersive read.
Hegarty on Creativity, John Hegarty:
I haven’t started reading this book yet but I ordered it on the premise of the blurb claiming to offer practical and helpful insight into an advertising creative’s take on the challenges of being ‘creative’.
Sketching from the Imagination: Characters, 3dtotal Publishing:
Featuring fifty contemporary artists/illustrators, this book offers inspiring tips on sketching and gives the reader a backstage pass into the brainstorming processes of professionals. A good book to pick up when suffering from art block.
Keeping an Eye Open, Julian Barnes:
A comparatively more difficult read from the previous list, a combination of academic essays on established Old Masters and blue-chip artists. I came across an extract of the book on Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa and became interested in the in-depth and contextual analysis of the work.

At age 23, Tina Fey was working at a YMCA. At age 23, Oprah was fired from her first reporting job.  At age 24, Stephen King was working as a janitor and living in a trailer.
At age 27, Vincent Van Gogh failed as a missionary and decided to go to art school.   At age 28, J.K. Rowling was a suicidal single parent living on welfare.
At age 28, Wayne Coyne ( from The Flaming Lips) was a fry cook. At age 30, Harrison Ford was a carpenter.  At age 30, Martha Stewart was a stockbroker.  At age 37, Ang Lee was a stay-at-home-dad working odd jobs. Julia Child released her first cookbook at age 39, and got her own cooking show at age 51. Vera Wang failed to make the Olympic figure skating team, didn’t get the Editor-in-Chief position at Vogue, and designed her first dress at age 40. Stan Lee didn’t release his first big comic book until he was 40. Alan Rickman gave up his graphic design career to pursue acting at age 42. Samuel L. Jackson didn’t get his first movie role until he was 46.
Morgan Freeman landed his first movie role at age 52. Kathryn Bigelow only reached international success when she made The Hurt Locker at age 57. Grandma Moses didn’t begin her painting career until age 76. Louise Bourgeois didn’t become a famous artist until she was 78. Whatever your dream is, it is not too late to achieve it. You aren’t a failure because you haven’t found fame and fortune by the age of 21. Hell, it’s okay if you don’t even know what your dream is yet. Even if you’re flipping burgers, waiting tables or answering phones today, you never know where you’ll end up tomorrow. Never tell yourself you’re too old to make it.
Never tell yourself you missed your chance.
Never tell yourself that you aren’t good enough.
You can do it. Whatever it is.

this spread’s color scheme is pink and purple! i’m proud of myself cause i’ve been very consistent with my bullet journal. exams are coming up and i’m sososo nervous. as you can see, i don’t really use my bujo as a planner, it’s more of a diary really. (i had to replace a name with ‘✧ ✧ ✧’ just in case people read the whole thing haha)

4 monocrome notebook icons
My first icon pack! I made these pretty monocrome, so I’ll do small customizations to them if requested (remove shadow, change color scheme, different background, etc).
Don’t claim as your own, and a credit somewhere would be appreciated (seriously I didn’t watermark these but please please don’t steal any of these)
EDIT: because these are 400x400 you’ll probably get better quality if you save them onto a laptop/computer

What’s the difference?? 만큼 and -느니만큼
Back with another grammar post! 만큼 and -느니만큼 look similar, but there’s a small (and important!) difference in their meaning.
만큼
The 만큼 grammar can be used with action verbs; descriptive verbs in the past, present, and future; and nouns. It indicates that what follows 만큼 is similar or equal to what comes before it, or that the two things are of a similar degree. Let’s look at some examples:
DESCRIPTIVE VERB: -(으)ㄴ 만큼 — 학생이 똑똑한 만큼 성적이 잘 나와요. (Students get better grades depending on how smart they are [Students get grades equivalent to how smart they are].)
PAST: -(으)ㄴ 만큼 — 경훈 씨는 제가 공부한 만큼 공부를 열심히 했어요. (Kyeonghoon studied just as hard as I studied.
PRESENT: -는 만큼 — 뷔페에 갈 때 돈을 내는 만큼 많이 먹어야 돼요. (When you go to a buffet, you should eat as much as you pay for [to the extent that you paid for it, you should eat that much].)
FUTURE: -(으)ㄹ 만큼 — 아이들이 다 충분히 먹을 수 있을 만큼 음식을 많이 준비해 주세요. (Please prepare a lot of food so that the children will be able to eat enough.)
NOUN: 만큼 — 동생의 키는 오빠의 키만큼 커요. (My younger brother is as tall as my older brother [My younger brother’s height is as big as my older brother’s height].)
Please note that with nouns, 만큼 attaches to the noun! When used with descriptive and action verbs, there is an obligatory space.
만큼’s meaning is similar to that of 정도, which expresses the degree of something!
-느니만큼
-느니만큼 is similar to 만큼 in that it expresses the degree of something, but it also expresses a reason for something, similar to -니까. It can be used with action verbs, descriptive verbs, and nouns, in the past and present tenses. It can sometimes be switched with 만큼 as described above, but you lose a bit of that “because” meaning.
AV PAST: -았/었으니만큼 — 공부를 열심히 했으니만큼 성적이 잘 나오겠어요. (Because you studied hard [and to the extent that you studied hard], you should get good grades.)
DV PAST: -았/었으니만큼 — 배가 고팠으니만큼 많이 먹었어요. (Because I was hungry [and to the extent that I was hungry] I ate a lot.)
AV PRESENT- -느니만큼 — 열심히 일하느니만큼 피곤해요. (Because I am working hard [and to the extent that I am working hard] I am tired.)
DV PRESENT- -(으)니만큼 — 공기가 좋지 않으니만큼 마스크를 꼭 챙기세요. (Because the air is not good [and to the extent that it is not good], please wear a mask.)
NOUN PAST: -였/이었으니만큼 — 가장 간절히 원하던 꿈이었으니만큼 그 꿈을 이루기 위해서 다했어요. (Because it was my most fervently desired dream [and to the extent that it was my most fervently desired dream] I did my best to achieve it.)
NOUN PRESENT: -(이)니만큼 — 중요한 발표니만큼 준비를 철저하게 해야 돼요. (Because it is an important presentation [and to the extent that it is an important presentation] I must prepare thoroughly].)
Feel free to ask if you have any questions or, if you see any mistakes, please let me know so I can fix them!
Happy studying~

1/100 Days of Productivity
I’ve been debating doing 100DoP for a while, and when better to give it a go than the start of a new term? I’m trying to get ahead with my International Security reading, which is made infinitely easier by a) the fact it’s a beautiful day and b) the hot water bottle I’m clutching.

Not a self-proclaimed insomniac, but with exams and gym and books and re-watching HIMYM, sleep isn’t very exciting 😂 so as lovely as a cup of coffee is, a few tips on napping correctly might be more effective 😅☕️
