Hello folks!
Last year I had an amazing opportunity to unleash creativity and came out of my comfrot zone by creating the character design tutorial for "Inspired by Nature".
The book, published by @3dtotal, just had it's premiere not so long ago, and is now available in the 3dtotal store!
It was a huge fun, and I hope you like how the Periwinkle came out!

Astre Volume 01, a stunning new art magazine that I’m featured in is now up for preorder on Kickstarter. Priced £10 during the campaign🐸✨
It’s 100 pages filled with ART!! Amazing art by wonderful artists. Each copy will be numbered and feature multiple paper types and techniques and finishes, like foil, cut-outs, embossing, add-ons… basically anything you can do with paper that fits in a magazine. The goal is to make the magazine like an art piece itself, that you can proudly hold in your collection🖤
I chose glossy highlights for my illustration, so the “blobs” around the frogs will be printed in gloss UV ;) Also slipped in a few pages of foil illustrations, y’all know I can’t help myself.
This magazine is a celebration of art, and in support of real artists. Much needed in this AI hellscape we’ve been condemned to..!

Congratulations on your author debut, I'm so excited for your book!! 😇💕
Would you consider talking about the whole process of becoming a book illustrator /children's book author?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!! And I'd be happy to share the process!
It all started for me with my 3dTotal artbook. 3dTotal is a small publisher in the UK, and they mainly focus on collections of artists' work. They use Kickstarter to fund each book, and my agent (the amazing Seth Fishman at Gernert) discovered me through the Kickstarter for my artbook Windows to Worlds!
He asked if I had any interest in working on graphic novels or picture books, and I had already been thinking about picture books! He found me my first picture book project with Penguin Workshop, Mother of Sharks, written by the awesome Melissa Cristina Márquez, which came out last year!
While I was working on Mother of Sharks, I was also talking with him about developing The Bakery Dragon, based of course on this painting, which was (and is) one of my proudest artistic moments.
For a little background on the painting, I painted it right after a really challenging couple of months medically - I was dealing with medical complications from my chronic illness for about 6 months, and I wasn't able to finish a single painting the whole time, I was just too exhausted from hospital visits and being in pain. That painting was the first piece I was able to actually complete (both emotionally and literally) in about half a year. So it always held a really special place in my heart, and I really wanted to keep living in that little world. I think there's something in it that is very special to me, about being outside in the cold, seeing warmth and love through a glass barrier, and wanting desperately to reach it.
With Seth's guidance, over a couple months, I developed a pitch for it. The script developed slowly alongside the designs for characters, locations, etc.
Tumblr media
(Early version of Ember above! He has changed a bit!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought I had already read a lot of picture books, I've always loved them, but I read hundreds and hundreds during this process. There is something uniquely fun and challenging about telling a complete narrative in 48 pages (which is already a long picture book, many are 32!) My book also pulls some elements from comics, such as speech bubbles, which I found to be incredible assets for humor and character development.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My pitch included designs, some early example spreads, and a rough script with story beats and jokes! My agent took it out into the world, and the publisher we ended up going forward with was Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House! I absolutely love the Knopf team and the beautiful books they put out! My editor, Katherine Harrison, really understood what I wanted to accomplish and has been so incredibly helpful in her guidance!
And from there... through rewrites, dialog adjustments, and lots and lots of drawings, it became a book! I'm happy to answer questions about the process! I'll leave you guys with a little preview from the interior of the book! (And of course you can pre-order it here, gotta learn the author skill of always including that link haha!)

what inspires your art? I mean art style and ideas. I noticed a lot of your art looks like tarot cards, is there a reason behind it? And do you have any recommendations for someone trying to make more stylized art?
Thank you
A real art related ask??? On my blog???? You're in the wrong place, my dude. We only shitpost gayly here.
/j
Inspo:
Fr tho music is a huuuuge inspiration to me. I have a David playlist I listen to when I'm drawing that just fills my head with 700 ideas per second. I'm thinking of actually doing something where people anonymously send me a number from 1 to 84 (# of songs I have on the playlist currently) and whatever number is chosen, I have to draw something based on the song that correlates with the number.
Biggest inspo has been this song lately:
Probably my fav song to make Jackalope art to.
Aside from that, what inspired my art style was "I like how rusty lake draws noses" mixed in with other cartoony styles that I like. I like shapes, so my style is very shape focused. I assign general traits to the shapes like circle is friendly, square is tough, etc.
So when I design a character or stylize a character, it's mostly about personality. Their shapes reflect who they are. Does that make sense?
I also really like religious imagery and metaphors/symbolism/imagery and would prefer to make my art vague over just outright saying what the drawing is meant to be. Ya know?
Tarot cards:
if I had a cent for every time someone told me that I'd buy myself dinner. I know next to nothing about tarot cards 😭 the reason my art looks the way it does is again, shapes. I like having shape centered backgrounds (ex: sharp triangle mountains. Circles like halos around character heads, etc...)
Here's a recent good example I did for a commission
Tumblr media
Symmetrical shapes and lines fit with what I do for my art style. It just looks nice to me. But I'm glad it gives my art that sorta "tarot" aesthetic.
Recommendations:
YES! Highly HIGHLY recommend 3Dtotal publishing "creating stylized characters" books. They helped me so much and they're wonderful, easy to follow, with varied examples
Tumblr media
3Dtotal publishing in general have a great selection of art books that I think anyone looking to get better at art should check out. Especially stylized art!

Debut Art is proud to announce that we now represent artist Deb JJ Lee.
Deb JJ Lee (she/they) is an illustrator and graphic novelist based in Brooklyn, New York, who began their dive into independent illustration in 2020 after leaving Silicon Valley as a full-time product designer/illustrator. This was barely two years after their graduation from Carnegie Mellon University School of Design, where Deb, by their final year, decided they needed to become an illustrator. A maximalist first and human second, Deb has a penchant for making sense of clutter, detail, and body language into lush unique compositions, patterns, and bold color palettes to communicate the right emotion to the viewer, whether it is through a book cover, poster, or an entire graphic novel. Their first graphic novel titled IN LIMBO, a YA memoir that explores the intersection of mental illness, Korean-American diaspora, family conflict, publishes in 2023 with First Second Books. Following the debut is THE OTHER SIDE OF TOMORROW by Tina Cho where Deb illustrates a tale of children escaping North Korea, which will land on bookshelves in 2024 with Harper Collins. While they particularly enjoy working with emotional storytelling involving AAPI topics, Deb is adamant about having an evergreen breadth of projects that expands beyond Asian America that allows them to make a meticulous illustration each better than the last. Clients include: Adobe, Google, NPR, Facebook, Wells Fargo, New York Times, New Yorker, Harper Collins, Radiolab, Macmillan Publishers, Simon and Schuster, Scientific American, Chronicle Books, ProPublica, Medium, The Verge, PBS, Japanese Breakfast, Discovery Inc, Procreate App, Lyft, LEGO, LinkedIn, Faber Castell, Sir Kensington’s, Temple University, Columbia University, 3dtotal They have made guest keynotes and lectures at and with Carnegie Mellon University, Lightbox Expo, Apple, Procreate App, and AIGA and have been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, 3x3 Annual, Applied Arts Mag, Print Mag, Creative Quarterly, and Adobe Awards.

hello i need to improve in art so I can become a Good can you recommend any art books?
i haven't really used any art instruction books for myself, but i DO have a lot of art books for inspiration! a lot of "the art of [movie/game/series]" and "the art of [cool internet artist]" - these are great because i LOVE seeing the process and thoughts behind design choices, color palettes, experimenting with shapes, et cetera. one of the books i have is called 'sketching from the imagination: characters' by 3Dtotal publishing, and like how it highlights a lot of different artists! that publisher has a LOT of cool art books, and i can't speak for all of them but it seems like they've got something for everyone! (LOOKING AT THEM WAS A MISTAKE I'M MOVING SOON I CAN'T ORDER MORE BOOKS NOOOO) a really good book that gets a lot of praise is color and light by james gurney - that is the dinotopia guy, his art is AMAZING. note that i'm linking to his website listing for a signed version of the book, it's probably cheaper unsigned but i don't want to link to amaz*n :'D when it comes to anatomy books, the morpho books are really good, there's a lot of them, i've got these two because those are the aspects i want to practice:
Tumblr media
I DON'T KNOW IF THESE ARE THE KINDS OF BOOKS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR, i personally learn a lot more from absorbing visuals and inspiration so that i can play around with the pieces myself. i've also learnt a lot by watching the occasional video of how other artists do things. it's a journey!! good luck!

Hello, sorry if you've answered this question before, but what advice would you give to a absolute beginner learning to draw fantasy character illustration art? (Also do you draw while high? Since that is the only way I know how I can experience new methods of thought openly without judgement.)
No it's completely fine! I haven't been asked about this per say. My own TL;DR tip would be just look at references and study real life animals and creatures and adjust that knowledge and understanding accordingly. Also I don't draw while high as I don't even smoke lmao- but on the other hand I can't focus on drawing either if I'm drunk so I guess the equivalent of that that I tend to do is like.. staying up too late and drawing at 5am lmao but that's not really something I can really recommend. But if you are an insomniac like me ig you can use tha awake time on something else than just spinning around in bed :') Rest I'll be putting under a read more as this is more writing than I anticipated lol
Fantasy characters/monsters have been something I've more or less drawn my whole life so far, but I'd say gathering a personal inspiration gallery/pinterest board or whatever helps a lot already at least when it comes to concepts and ideas for character creating and illustration in general. It can be basically whatever, other designs you already like, colors, patterns, shapes, general feeling, animals, people, makeup, you name it! Same goes with exploring the medias and character designs you already consume and like personally to get started, for example for me those being games like Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy (xiv). Mayhaps pick up the designs you especially like. What do you want to include of them into your own art?
Is there a spesific theme that you like? What kind of art are you wanting to make spesifically? Do you want to make it borderline realistic or more stylized? Is your focus on the anatomy, colors, light or for example in composition? Are you wanting to draw more humanoid or animalistic creatures? Are you focusing on the character design itself or purely the illustration but just focusing on fantasy creatures?
I guess that is more of the those are some points that help out on where to aim yourself/own goals from there on. When I personally do fantasy characters/illustrations I personally have been focusing especially as of late on the anatomy and how to make them *work* relatively realistically, where looking at and studying on real life animals from skin to bones will help.
There are some books like "Fundamentals of Creature Design" from 3dtotal Publishing written by many different character design artists, "Science of Creature Design : Understanding Animal Anatomy" written and illustrated by Terryl Whitlatch are good books when it comes to applying knowledge of anatomy of real life creatures into something fictional and not existing. I've found that to be helpful for me as understanding things like how the bones actually work, how the muscles are attached in with different kind of animals, how the body parts themselves are structured. James Gunrey's "Imaginative Realism" is also a good guide for such but it is much broader with the concepts of imaginitive realism as it also touches subjects such as environment, architecture, fictional cultures, clothing, wehicles, etc. Relating to imaginative reality also paleo art is good when it comes to this topic as all the reconstructions and art pieces that we have are more or less all based on our knowledge of real animals and anatomy. And some artistic freedoms but you get the drill.
Uh,, that was a mouthful and most likely overwhelming and all over the place as my feverish brain can barely think straight but those are bits and pieces of what I'd recommend to study and look up. If nothing else the general studies and the inspiration boards are something I especially recommend :') I hope this helped even a little bit!

You can find me and my scribbles in the pages of 'Sketching from the Imagination: Character concepts' along with lots and lots of inspiring artists. The book just got published by 3dtotal and can be found here: https://ift.tt/HOXfinZ I was thinking mostly about sketchbooks and my dynamics with them, when I answered the questions some months ago. The sketches published there are mostly from last year, when I had a little break between client projects. I've found no space for sketchbooks or regenerative personal practice lately, and that raises interesting, sometime uncomfortable but very necessary questions. Instead of beating myself up with preformed ideas of what a 'real' artist should or shouldn't be doing, I'm trying to accept what is, as part of my own process, as well as explore the questions and the discomfort and see what comes up. If I find illuminated answers I promise I'll tell you first ;) In the meantime I'll be reading what the other artists in the book have to say and see what resonates with me. Have a great week everyone 📚 ______________ #3dtotal @3dtotal #characterconcepts #sketchbook #artistpractice #artprocess #maharelillo — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/mckE9b5
