Unwell - Matchbox Twenty (2003)
“Unwell” is the second single from Matchbox Twenty’s third album, More Than You Think You Are. It is one of their most well-known songs and was very popular at the time of its release.
Rob Thomas, the lead singer for Matchbox Twenty, states that he wrote the song as a metaphor for humanity in general, a song for people who are “messed up and feel alone like that. We all feel a little messed up sometimes… you’re not alone.”

Un-Break My Heart - Toni Braxton (1997)
“Un-Break My Heart” is Toni Braxton’s 2nd single released via LaFace Records off of her second studio album, Secrets, with Diane Warren as the writer of this ballad. Braxton, however, expressed dislike for this song, explaining that she didn’t want another “heartbreak track” even though it was a worldwide success, and won her a Grammy Award for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance” in 1997. Producer L.A. Reid was able to convince Toni Braxton in the end to record and feature “Un-Break My Heart” in her album.
“Un-Break My Heart” peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and stayed there for eleven weeks, while achieving similar success on the Hot Dance Club Songs and Adult Contemporary Charts. In 1998, when Billboard celebrating their forty years of charting from 1958 to 1998, “Un-Break My Heart” was declared the most successful song by a solo artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
“Un-Break My Heart”, expectedly, achieved success in Europe as well. By topping the charts in Austria, Sweden, Belgium (Wallonia), and Switzerland, and reaching the top number fives in more than ten countries.
The corresponding music video was directed by Bille Woodruff and premiered on September 10, 1996 via MTV. “It portrays Braxton mourning the death of her lover, while remembering the good times they had together.”
Toni Braxton’s live performances of “Un-Break My Heart” include the ones at the Opening Ceremony of the Billboard Music Awards in 1996 and as the closing number of the Libra Tour of 2006.
A Spanish version of the song was featured as a bonus on the album, titled “Regresa a Mi”.

Irreplaceable - Beyonce (2006)
“Irreplaceable” is the ultimate kiss-off song and ultimately Beyoncé at her peak. The lyrics were originally written by Ne-Yo from a male perspective, but later changed when Beyoncé came on board. In it, she destroys some guy’s attempted manipulations of her. While she’s the irreplaceable Queen B, he’s just another disposable guy who she can replace in about 60 seconds, and she doesn’t take his crap about her.
Released in 2006, the song was incredibly successful, topping charts worldwide, including in the US for ten weeks. This broke her previous record of nine weeks on top with “Baby Boy.” (Surprisingly, “Crazy in Love” lasted at #1 for only 8 weeks.) It was also the #1 song of 2007, although chart weeks mean that 2007 lasts from about October 2006 – October 2007. As of 2016, it’s still her longest-running number one.

Every Breath You Take - The Police (1983)
“Every Breath You Take” is, to this day, still perceived to be a love song. However, the lyrics are actually spoken from a character with sinister intent. During the time Sting wrote this song, he had just divorced his first wife, Frances Tomelty. While his intention may have been to write a sweet, emotional love song from the beginning, he was soon realizing that he was entering into a dark place that fought for control and surveillance. Being in the midst of the Cold War, at that time, did not help the situation.
Musically, the track features a minimal arrangement. Sting’s bass, Stewart Copeland’s drums, and Andy Summers‘ guitar round out the basic tracks with added synths, piano, and recording effects to boost the production. This was at a time where the band were having conflicts on a regular basis which almost caused producer Hugh Padgham to quit and the recording to cease.
Regardless of the turmoil during the recording, “Every Breath You Take” was a worldwide success. The music video, directed by Godley & Creme, even won the band the first Best Cinematography award at the 1983 MTV Video Music Awards. The song also stands as the signature song of The Police and has been played more than 9 million times on radio.
It was also:
The best-selling single of 1983, and the fifth best-selling single of the 1980’s in the United States
Winner of the 1984 Best Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy awards
#84 on the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
It topped the Billboard Top 100 for 8 weeks and the UK singles chart for 4 weeks

Love Story - Taylor Swift (2009)
Taylor was inspired to write “Love Story” when she was going through a difficult situation with a boy she liked, whom she wasn’t “officially” dating. The song has been rumored to be about two singers – the first being Joe Jonas, since it was recorded in March of 2008, just a few months before she began actually dating him. Other songs such as “Forever & Always” and “Last Kiss” are more explicitly about him.
The second rumored subject of the song is Boys Like Girls front-man, Martin Johnson whom Swift had a brief fling with in 2008 and collaborated with to pen the band’s track “Two is Better Than One” and Taylor’s song “If This Was a Movie”. This is a fitting match for the “star-crossed lovers” theme of the song as sources claimed that although the pair were into each other, Taylor’s publicists felt he was not a good match for her “American sweetheart” image – with him being a punk rocker who was going through personal issues at the time.
She chose to portray the story of Romeo and Juliet in the song, because she felt like she could relate.
I used to be in high school where you see [a boyfriend] every day. Then I was in a situation where it wasn’t so easy for me, and I wrote this song because I could relate to the whole Romeo and Juliet thing.
The lyrics talk about disapproval against the relationship, and her desire to go somewhere far away with him, and escape the people who look down on them.
“Love Story” peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs, and at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, just weeks after its release.
The song’s music video was described as timeless, by Swift.
‘Love Story’’s plot was a timeless scenario: I think it could happen in the 1700s, the 1800s, or 2008
The video won the CMT Music Awards for “Video of the Year,” as well as “Female Video of the Year.”
In February 2021, “Love Story” became the first official re-release from Taylor’s backcatalog following contractual disputes with Scooter Braun. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in her career as she sought autonomy and freedom from what she perceived as a manipulative business relationship.
