bring back zooterkins, the best 17th-century swear word
I don't normally do Just Characters Swearing, but. ...this kind of wrote itself and then wouldn't leave my head. it comes from both a piece of character-writing advice that has always stuck with me, and also my conviction that Leona is 1000% funnier as a character if his dialogue has to stay G-rated. let Kalim say fuck, but don't let Leona say bastard.
(I'm sorry)

Hey weird question but what happens if you put two reasonably likeable anthropologists of wildly different cultures together in the same room? Do they study each other? CAN they? Is it like an infinite conversational feedback loop? I'm imagining two dogs eternally sniffing each others butts at the park

RiSW: Ripples
AN: I've been stuck for a while on a different thing for this story, so I decided to change gears and try out a different writing style to see if it would help kick-start my writer brain. And it worked! So here you go.
Ao3 Link
It starts with a boy.
He’s small and poor and has no one to turn to, living on the streets of the Lower City. The boy’s never spent a day in school, but he’s small and fast and cleverer than the adults give him credit for. He knows how to pick a mark even if he barely reaches most folks' knees, he picks pockets and snatches fallen food and tears off before anyone can catch him. He can fend for himself and that’s all he needs. (It is, tragically, all he knows.)
He often lingered by the docks and the taverns, snatching fallen coins and raiding bins for scraps. Where the drunks and the ladies would never pay mind to a grubby, homeless, gutter brat lurking in the shadows so long as they weren’t in their way.
(There are more children like him on those streets than the people of the Upper City would ever know. If they bothered to look. Yet they still lauded their city as the Best, rarely ever looking at the people in the city below them, just the ones living at the top.)
But he's young and still learning the world and he makes mistakes. Sometimes he bites off more than someone as small as him could chew, no matter how fast or clever he thinks he is.
He gets caught on a navy ship, clutching a bag of coins that he’d thought he could escape unnoticed with.
He had been sure that, like so many other sailors he’d seen, they would spend their night on the shore in the houses full of pretty ladies or the taverns full of food and drink. Celebrating their feet being on land again after days or weeks or months at sea. Too drunk or too distracted to notice someone as small as him sneaking onto the ship to swipe a single bag of coins.
Once on board, he learns the captain and the doctor are still on the ship talking to each other. So he hides, hoping the two will leave soon and he can escape with his prize. But it’s late and dark and the Lower City had been colder than he was used to for too long. The sound of waves and distant voices combined with the gentle rocking of the ship lull him to sleep in the small corner of the warm hold he’s hidden away in.
He wakes late the next morning, long after they had left port that day when a sailor discovers him after dropping a box on their foot.
There’s a frantic scramble that ends with him cornered on the ship’s deck, baring his teeth and growling but sure that he’s in for the worst. (He’s a little thief, after all. One that’s been caught in the act.) But he gets lucky, though he won't truly know how lucky until much later.
The captain is old, gruff, and as soft as a plank of wood, but he and the rest of the crew are all from the Lower City too. He knows what life is like there. They all do.
He looks down at the fierce, dirty child on his deck (dressed in rags and shaking in fear and trying so hard to hide it) and decides there's no reason to be cruel to a kid just trying to survive. No reason to get angry or to hit the kid or throw him over for trying to steal from them. That kind of thing helped no one, and they were navy men. They were better than that.
Instead, he orders one of the seamen to lock the boy in one of the cabins until they can hand him off to a ship returning to their home port.
So the boy is locked in a cabin, where the crew plans to keep him until they reach the restock port to send him home. But the sailors are kinder than the boy is used to people being. They keep him fed and warm and tell him grand stories of life at sea, fighting terrifying sea beasts and vicious pirates and defending the Republic with all their strength.
Every tale is met with childish awe and the Storyteller of the ship adores having such a rapt audience.
But, before they reach the port, the ship hits a snag.
A snag in the form of a ship of pirates that mistake them for a merchant ship they can raid. Suddenly, the Navy Ship is turned into a battlefield that they're struggling to keep above deck because of the small passenger hidden below.
The boy can hear the shouting and fighting above and finds that a seaman forgot to lock the cabin door after bringing him food that day. He slips out into the halls, wanting to know what is happening and hoping to find a better spot to hide. He finds his way to the deck, where the battle is raging loudest, and sees one of the crew knocked prone, an armed pirate standing over them.
People don't realize just how sharp a child’s teeth are until those little teeth are buried in their arm.
The pirate howls in pain and the sailor gapes at the child latched onto the man’s arm. Then he howls in laughter when the child is knocked off, only to seize a fallen belaying pin and do his damnedest to bash out the invader’s knees with it. The seaman gleefully cheers the kid on, shouting “Get ‘im Rookie! Get ‘im!” and follows in his wake armed with his own cutlass.
The pirates are driven off, and the sailors change how they treat their stowaway.
Before, they had always called him Boy or Brat but now they call him Kid and Rookie and meet his face with grins and laughter. He’s allowed out on the deck and given simple chores that even someone as small as he could do. Sailors ruffle his hair when he does well and explain how to do better when he doesn’t. Even if he complains sometimes, he doesn’t want to leave.
(He’s found a life that feels more like home than “home” ever did.)
It’s not hard for the seamen to figure out that there’s no one waiting for their rookie in the lower city. No parent worrying themselves sick over where their kid has gone and why he hasn’t come home yet. He’s alone.
The sailors know he’s too young to join officially but… Their ship is small, and rarely ever gets inspected by the higher-ups. No one would notice one more body working their decks, so long as it didn’t invite trouble. And their fellows wouldn’t care if they spotted a kid cleaning decks in exchange for food. (They just- wouldn’t mention that the kid was sailing with them too.)
So the Rookie gets to stay, working the cabins and helping clean the decks. And that becomes his life for several years.
But things changed in the Republic and sailors needed to know things now that they hadn’t before, things that their crew couldn’t teach their little Rookie that he would need to grow up and rise in the ranks. That folks would notice as he got bigger and stronger and others spotted him with them. The captain knew they couldn’t keep him hidden with them forever.
So he called a favor from a cousin and struck a deal with their Rookie.
Four years on land, going to school and learning all the things younger sailors were expected to know now, then he could apply properly to the Navy. And the captain would vouch for him and make sure he joined their crew officially. Then he’d be fighting with them, as a fellow seaman, for the Republic. For folks in the Lower City like them.
He’s reluctant, of course. (The ship is his home and the crew is his family.) But he agrees.
He stays with the captain’s cousin and goes to school. He does his best, even when he wants to bust heads or scream in frustration. But he goes and he learns and gets the grades he needs to be a proper sailor.
.-.
In one life, he makes it with very few hiccups.
He gets the grades and joins the Navy. He climbs the ranks and fights for his home, getting the strength and skill and wisdom to lead the people around him. He earns his own ship and crew and strikes fear into the pirates of the sea who think his home is easy prey.
He sails to distant seas and dives to the darkest depths. He sees the best and the worst of the world, saintly souls and age-old grudges. He sticks to his morals through it all and helps those who turn to him for it. (Because he remembers where he started. He remembers being small and hungry and alone. If he can help someone suffering the same things, he will.) He fights sea beasts and pirates and rescues innocent people from disaster and refuses to leave his men behind.
And the sentiment is shared by his crew. It is unspoken, as none of them feel it needs to be said aloud, but they would fight tooth and nail for their captain and follow him to places only madmen would go. (Many times, that’s exactly what they do.)
He becomes a hero in the eyes of the people and a Respected Elder of the Republic. He helps change it for the better and acts as a voice for the people of the Lower City.
And when a war long-thought dead returns to the world, he and his crew are ready to fight. The navy is ready to defend their home against the greatest threat it’s ever seen, led by the Captain who had once been just another Boy on their streets.
.-.
But in another, his captain comes to visit and learns that their rookie has vanished.
He’d gone out two nights before to get something the captain’s cousin forgot while shopping and never came back.
Captain and crew scour the streets trying to find something, anything, that could tell them what happened. They find the rookie’s wallet, money still inside, knocked under a merchant’s stall. And a wizard combing the area because of a strange magic they could feel there, though it was fading.
An alert goes out about the abduction (as that is all they can think of for why a teenager in the Lower City would leave without their hard-earned money) and the sailors of the docks go into their own hunts. Even if the city guards ignore the event, dismiss it as just another runaway, the people of the Lower City go into high alert. Children and teens are kept under close watch and adults spread word of the possible danger in whispers.
They all ensure that the disappearance is Known and that people know who went missing in hopes he can be found and brought home.
(The wizard is kind and determined and tells his fellows of the magic he’d found and throws himself into research when he learns of the young man that may have been stolen away by it. Especially when he sees how little the town’s guards seem to care about the incident. He will help, and stars help anyone who tries to stop him.)
The ripples go far and wide, and a watcher none of them knew of notices. They notice that someone who should have been there is suddenly gone.
And they start searching too.
(Because he will be important. He needs to be there, even if no one knows just how important he is to the place he calls home. The light he is carries is needed to help make things right, to help rebuild what had already been destroyed once.)

I decided to use the blank card I made for Cab, so now Cab has a uniform card. I think I'll try to do more for Cab later, like the PE Uniform and the Ceremonial Robes. The pose (and anatomy, to a degree) fought me a bit until I finally pulled out my copy of Allpose to make it work. And I took a screenshot of Caviar so I could make sure Cab looked like himself. (gotta love color pickers)
I'm honestly really pleased with the uniform.
It's funny that, as far as we know, there isn't actually a day-to-day uniform for the MC yet the fandom has a pretty clear idea of what it would look like. The only outfit that they could, potentially, have is the ceremonial robes since no one commented on them being "out of uniform" during the prologue. (The one Grim woke them up to try and steal.)
That doesn't stop the fashion drawings from being a ton of fun.
Here's the card if other people want to use it!

Yeah I agree that you can't go into a minor's head with a psy-portal, unless its an extreme case. I wonder if Crowley's has a ton of enablers, bad ideas, and doubts.
Yuu is doing prayer hands as they stare out at the SEA of Enablers and Bad Ideas, interspersed with the occasional Doubt (and there are still way too many for a single person), and slowly turns back to the astral projection of the Headmage standing beside them:
"Crowley? I am going to say this in the nicest possible way I can, you need serious ****ing help."
After learning what he has about the mind from Yuu, Crowley knows full well that there's nothing he can say to that.

Psychonaut Wonderland sounds interesting. The NRC staff and students might wonder how is that student using magic without a crystal? I wonder if with the consent of the students we learn about the mindscapes of them. Memory vaults, nightmares, judgment, censors and more.
An example of a students mind?
I'm trying to make myself write my Twst/CRK crossover and you made me daydream details about this idea for my entire work shift. How dare. (jk jk)
The version of Yuu I have in my head doesn't show off their powers a ton at first. But, that said, they are very casual about using them once they get that it's okay to do so. And they are more than happy to ramble to people about psychics and the hard-won skills they have. So the moment someone says something (or thinks it particularly loudly), they gleefully go off and explain. They're very clear that their powers are all from their brain and not from magic, which is probably really interesting to the Mages. The drawbacks that Yuu has come more from overstraining/overusing their powers, which comes in the form of migraine as opposed to blot.
Some students would probably be really interested in Yuu's powers, (which are non-transferable, to Azul's displeasure) and ask a lot about them once they know. (I'm leaning toward Ortho, Lilia, and/or Riddle as being the most likely to actively ask Yuu about their powers.)
In Universe, it's discouraged for a psychic to enter the mind of someone underage but I would assume extreme circumstances would allow them to jump into another student's head. However, Yuu would also do it if a student gave them permission to go in.
Like if they really wanted to know what was in there or if they wanted help because they didn't think their mental health was very good. (Or if someone close to them suggested it.)
But it would honestly be more likely that Yuu would bring someone into their mind to look around!
And... I think Yuu's mind would look a lot like the concept art for the River of Heavens from the game Okami. With the occasional "Ancient Technology" stuff thrown in to fit the aesthetic while still showing they're used to Psychonauts-level tech.
The whole place is very ethereal and peaceful because Yuu is very interested in Psychology/Therapy in addition to wanting to be an agent. And, after everything that they've learned about the adults in the Psychonauts (Like the Psychic Six and Oleader), they feel like someone needs to be prepared to keep everyone else from flipping their lids.

Shark's Fury
AN: I had a vision of Cab unspeakably furious and Leona's treatment of Ruggie gave the perfect scenario to make him lose it. Also, I wanted to find a way to weave in more from Caviar, and I think I've found a good starting point for that.
Also, heads up, there's A LOT of swearing in this chapter because of Cab losing his temper.
Ao3 Link
Captain Caviar would go above and beyond for his crew, while still trusting them to hold their own without him. Leona’s callousness toward Ruggie ignites a fury Cab hadn't known he was capable of.
Cab was furious. Unspeakably furious.
His eyes were locked on Leona and Ruggie, watching in slowly rising fury as Leona’s signature spell worked its way through the beastkin’s body. Anyone with eyes could see the pain the hyena was in from it, and from the betrayal that had come with it.
He’d trusted Leona to help him. To have his back. And the lion had just spit that in his face.
(How dare he?)
Ruggie had been following Leona’s orders. Followed them to the letter, even. It wasn't his fault that the other dorms and the headmage had started to catch on because of the number of students flooding the nurse's office. All right before the major interdorm competition that they were likely players for.
Leona was the one who forgot that the rest of the world had eyes and ears too and it had got them caught.
And now he was punishing the hyena for the lion’s screw-up.
(How dare he?)
Ruggie would die if they didn't get him away from Leona. He could see it in the detached way the so-called prince was acting towards him.
The spell would turn him to dust if they didn’t get him away soon, but it was too dangerous for any of them to get closer. They couldn't do anything, all because the rich bastard was throwing a fit over the fact that he kept losing to another team at a stupid sports game.
“It- It hurts,” was the weak gasp that drifted over, and something finally gave.
(How Dare He.)
Something in his chest snapped and the red haze in his head blinded him to his own instincts. He needed to get Ruggie away from Leona and to get that (too dark) spellpen out of that pompous lion’s hands.
There was a bang like a gunshot and Leona jolted back, head following something falling behind him. Cab surged past the unmoving people around him, barely noting Riddle shouting something as he sprinted past.
He snarled in fury as he slammed the entirety of his bodyweight into the Housewarden’s chest. They both hit the ground hard, likely knocking the wind out of the lion. Cab’s forearm dug into Leona’s collarbone, forcing the lion to look him in the eye.
(He didn’t notice that Riddle had managed to collar the beastkin in the span it had taken for Cab to tackle him. The lion couldn’t call on his magic to get Cab off him now. And no one seemed inclined to pry the furious human off of him.)
"How fucking dare you.” He pressed down harder as he glared with every scrap of fury he felt. “How dare you act high and mighty while killing one of your dorm mates for holding you accountable. All because your ego is too fucking fragile to handle not being number one for a fucking game.”
He could see Leona’s face contort, a snarl forming in response to Cab’s words. But there was something else in his face that Cab was too angry to try and interpret then. He shoved down, forcing air from the other’s chest. He refused to let him get a word in. Not until he finished with him.
(Leona was strong, but he backed his power with his magic. Cab only had raw strength to rely on, and he was going to push his advantage for as long as possible.)
“You fucking asshole. Did you honestly think no one would realize? That the staff was too stupid to notice that your dorm just so happened to be the only one untouched? You should be thanking your lucky stars that the board’s been kept in the dark and hasn’t canceled the whole thing to prevent a scandal from getting out. Never mind what the fae would have done to you if your plan to injure their crown prince had fucking worked.”
Leona’s face twitched, eyes widening slightly.
Good, he thought viciously. His brain is finally working.
“I am a prince-” he rasped out but Cab cut him off with a snarl.
“You could be the king and I wouldn’t fucking care. Right now, you’re a spoiled, trust-fund brat throwing a fit because no one’s blowing smoke up your ass to inflate your ego. Get over yourself. There’s an entire world of things you could be doing with your life but you’re too fucking lazy to get off your ass and find them,” he spat in fury. Every inch of him was seething and he was going to make sure Leona heard every word of it. “You may have been born a prince but your head is too far up your own ass to know how to be a leader, never mind a king. Being a king is an empty fucking title if you can’t be assed to protect the people that look to you for it. The way your dorm has been looking to you for it.”
“And if you can’t be assed to protect them, then I will. Even if I have to break your jaw to keep you from casting another fucking spell with that damn black pen again!”
He almost wanted Leona to try arguing against him, just so he could have the excuse to follow through. He was ready to send the lion to the nurse for all of this. He wasn’t ready for Leona to start laughing. And it wasn’t a good laugh, either.
The chill that shot down his spine cut through the haze of rage in his head and grounded his blind fury, fast.
It was a very familiar chill, and not in a good way.
It was the same one he’d gotten when Riddle had overblotted.
There was something very wrong, and his brain was screaming that he was far too close to the source. And, based on the dark look in Leona’s eyes, he had a very good guess about where it was coming from.
“Ha, hahaha! You- You’re probably right. No, you’re completely right. I’ll never be king, even if I gave everything I had!”
Cab had just enough time to think “Fuck”, then Riddle’s collar shattered, and a blast of painfully dry air and something else slammed into his chest and threw him off the lion.
The air in Savanaclaw was already dry, but this was worse. Just breathing hurt, his own pained gasp from hitting the ground enforced it. The skin on his arms hurt, he could feel it cracking as Leona’s signature spell filled the air, draining every drop of invisible moisture around them away. (Of course, the parts he’d been pressing down on Leona with would have gotten the brunt of that spell…)
Shit, now he knew what Ruggie was feeling earlier.
“I’ve always been loathed, ever since I was born. Why would now be any different? My hard work has never meant anything! To anyone!” Leona’s voice… He sounded wrong, to Cab’s ears. There was something in his tone, the shadow over his face, this was a tipping point. And Leona was jumping over that edge. “How could you understand? How could you understand what it’s like? My disappointment?! My pain?!”
The cloud of magic surged  in time with Leona’s roar of fury and Cab reflexively shielded his eyes against it. He could hear the others yelling in panic, and there was at least one voice calling his name. But his focus was on the sudden pain in his chest and the darkness descending around them all. It was like a black duststorm was enveloping the Savana-like dorm they were in, choking everyone in its path.
(Was it from the spell? From the overblot? Both?)
No matter what, there was something more important that needed to happen.
“Clear the area of people, now! Evacuate everybody that’s hurt. Carry ‘em if you have to! GO!” Ignoring the pain in his chest, he bellowed his orders over the panic of everyone else, putting every ounce of command he could muster into his tone. There would be no fatalities today. He wouldn’t allow it.
He could see people, many of them beastkin, jolting and scrambling to follow the commands. Good.
“Ha… I could never be a leader, you said? And yet you step in without a single thought and people listen. A powerless nobody like you… And they turn against me to follow you instead!”
Looking back at the lionkin confirmed exactly what Cab had thought. He had changed like Riddle had. Steeped in black and sharpened edges, everything that the lion was struggling with was now wrapped around him like a cloak. Clothing that should have been glinting and regal was stained in black and patched together, robbing it of the glory it could have shown. And the monstrous, patchwork lion-like being that pulled itself from his shadow made it even clearer, as the limited light glinted off its glass-like head.
Leona had gone into overblot.
And Cab was the one standing closest to him.
Shit.
~.~.~.~.~
Deuce had never expected his day to turn out like this. He didn’t think any of them had. He’d never seen Cab so furious before but his speech had been no less true than anything that the rest of them had wanted to say to Leona.
Leona shouldn’t have tried to cheat just because he’d never been able to beat Malleus during spelldrive and he’d never thought about the risks of his plan. All of those were terrible traits for someone who wanted to be a king. The harm they could do to their country and people…
But being confronted by his own flaws had, apparently, been too much for the prince to handle.
He’d felt like his heart had stopped when the housewarden’s collar had been shattered by Leona’s overblot. For a hair-thin moment, he’d frozen as the wave of Dark washed over him. That chill that was just too much like when Riddle had gone over the edge.
Then, despite being at ground zero of Leona’s magic, Cab took charge. Shouting past his quickly drying throat to give orders to everyone else.
And everyone listened. Even Riddle seemed to fall into line, for just a moment.
But Cab’s rapidly shouted orders weren’t enough, and their housewarden started filling in the blanks, giving more specific commands to the people present.
He and Ace had been ordered to get the injured to the mirrors, sent Lilia to get someone from the faculty there, and Riddle started working to contain the disaster unfolding in front of them. His signature spell was practically useless in the face of Leona’s raw power.
And Ramshackle’s prefect was in the thick of it, despite not having an ounce of magic to fight with.
The Prefect was holding his own shockingly well under Leona’s onslot. He wasn't able to cast spells, but he kept drawing Leona’s attention and moving just fast enough to keep him from landing a good blow. And keeping the prince from focusing on a single opponent gave them all the leg up they needed to knock him out before the overblot could kill him. It was messy, desperate, and as far from a coordinated battle as it could get, but they won.
Cab had blacked out for a moment when the adrenaline faded, but Riddle had confirmed that he hadn't sustained any serious injuries.
Then the headmage came and things were settled. The punishment for Savanaclaw, allowing a hodgepodge team to be built so Grim and other students who hadn’t made their dorm teams could play, and Deuce felt like he could finally breathe again.
(Well, aside from Cab having to be taken to the nurse thanks to Grim’s horrid aim with a spelldisk. But he woke up and the nurse assured them all he would be fine.)
It was while they were all recuperating in the nurse's office that Lilia, Diasomnia’s Vice-Housewarden came by.
“That was a fantastic shot, Mr. Sturge. You have quite a talent for sharpshooting.”
“Hah?” Cab looked over, wincing slightly from his headache. Lilia continued to smile, tilting his head slightly.
“The gun you called forth, you were a fantastic shot with it. I’ve never seen someone shoot a spellpen out of a mage’s hand before, and without hitting their hand either!” He chirped as if he hadn’t said something impossible. “It was truly an amazing shot. And the tackle to get Leona away from Ruggie, very well done.”
“Uh, Vice-housewarden? I think you might be mistaken, Cab doesn’t have magic.” He hedged nervously. Surely their upperclassman knew about Cab, it wasn’t exactly a secret that he was the only non-mage on campus. “The Dark Mirror said as much when the Headmage tried to have him sorted into a dorm.”
Dark red eyes blinked at them.
“No, I am quite certain of what I saw. Mr. Sturge conjured a gun of light from his chest and used it to shoot Leona’s spellpen out of his hand. He was standing behind most of you, so I can understand how you would have missed it.” He smiled at Cab, who looked as confused as the rest of them.
Cab stared for a few moments, a hand pressed to his head as he slowly pushed himself up from the bed.
“I… Don’t remember doing that. Though, I was more focused on getting Leona away from Ruggie than I was anythin’ else.”
Deuce heard him mutter something that sounded like “and kicking his ass” in there, but Cab wasn’t speaking very loudly overall. (Probably from the minor concussion the nurse had mentioned.)
Lilia let out a thoughtful hum, nodding.
“Ah, a reflexive call then. You have a strong protective drive. Well, you did do that, even if you don’t remember it. I’m sure that, once you understand how you called it to you this time, you can master it.” He grinned, fangs glinting in the light. “Despite what most may think, not all types of magic make someone a mage. And the Dark Mirror only looks for mage magic, not the other kinds.”
“WHAT?!”
AN: Not pictured, Cab clamping his hands over his ears with a whine and saying "Guy, please, don't yell. My head hurts so much right now…"
I know the thing with the gun is weird/unexpected, but I wanted to find a way to work in Caviar's Skill from CRK into the story. The problem is that his attack is tied into the Black Shark Submarine, which Cab doesn't have access to. But, his main weapon in the game is a gun/flintlock. So I pulled in an item from a different game to give him a weapon he could use.
There's a lovely little game out there called Spiritfarer where the PC, Stella, has a magic item called the Everlight that turns into, basically, any item she might need to do her job as the Spiritfarer. A pickax, oven mitts, a tree saw, a watering can, and many more. (It even seems to act as a lantern when Stella's in a dark place.)
And that's what Cab's gun is, an everlight-like item that's able to shift into whatever weapon/item he needs it to be. And, since it's more of a magic item than a spell, having it doesn't make Cab a Mage.
How did he get it? Well, that's a story for a different chapter.

Trying to figure out Cab's actual design in Reflections in Soda Water, and also remembered this meme and decided to put them together. I tried to make sure he looked young, while still resembling his Adult, Cookie Self.
His hair is shorter (sideburns and bangs aren't as long/defined as Cookie ver), and his mustache isn't in he same style (yet). And he doesn't have the little eye-bags used to make cookies look older.
(he'a also not wearing the tie/fancy blazer that are part of the NRC uniform.)
Also, learned that I really need to practice drawing Grim. Like, I really need to practice him.

Dreams of Forgotten Seas
An: Whee~ Another chapter of this lark, but this time some foreshadowing of the past events. (PastShadowing?) A teeny-tiny look at the connection between Captain Caviar and Cab. Your theories are welcome. As well as any rage over what you think might have happened. >:3
Ao3 Link
Cab has always seen the sea in his dreams.
In some dreams, he’s surrounded by battle. Blurred faces shouting and fighting, gunshots and clashing swords echo through the air. His chest full of adrenaline and determination and excitement. And the instinctive knowledge that the people he fights with will have his back. That they’ll cover his failings and he’ll cover theirs. They are his crew and he is their captain, and they work together like a well-oiled engine.
They are fierce and strong and reliable and so is he. And it’s a wonderful high that follows him to the waking world.
In other dreams, his feet stand on mighty ships and he’s surrounded by people with blurred faces singing shanties as they work on the decks. As they follow drills and tend to the powerful ship in their care. Surrounded by camaraderie as strong as the chains of an anchor steadying a ship on the seas. It feels right in a way he can never explain.
They’re all good dreams where he wakes feeling strong and unstoppable.
(Even with the faint ache in his chest when he wakes in his lonely bedroom, on solid earth instead of on a ship at sea. Even before he woke to a shabby, ill-cared-for ceiling and had to attend a school for the kids of kids high-rolling people that he’d never be around normally.)
But the dreams he hates are the ones that start with that peaceful camaraderie but then it changes.
Voices are talking, casual and relaxed. There’s a stein of something in his hand (he doesn’t know what) as he looks out at the deck and the distant sunset. It’s calm and peaceful and there’s a feeling of pride resting inside him. This is a good day.
Then the ship under his feet lurches in a way that doesn’t feel natural.
Something is wrong.
He shouts and the crew starts to move, reacting to the same feeling he has. Then the sky  c r a c k s  and everything turns wrong, wrong, wrong and there’s a soul-deep, instinctive panic inside him and he turns to yell for his crew and-
He wakes when he hits the floor, hard, tangled in bedding and a scream trapped in his throat as he desperately gasps for breath.
He wants to race out and find his crew and make sure they’re alright. Ensure they’re safe.
But he knows they aren’t there.
Instead, he forces himself to stay still and listen to the sounds of the night. To listen to what’s outside, to listen to the breathing of the people sleeping nearby (if there are any), until his heart rate slows and the urge to scream and run and fight fades.
It takes a long time for him to calm down enough to sleep again, and the lack of sleep can be seen by those who look close enough.
He wishes he knew what they meant and what gave him those dreams.
If only to give him some peace.
AN: I have a third bit started for this AU, but I'm a little stuck since it's about Leona's Overblot. Mostly about how he finally blows since Cab is the one who gets the sharpest words in instead of Lilia.
Cab's gonna regret getting too close, it's just hard figuring out how the tip-over unfolds. (Also, boss battles are hard to write...)

Ramshackle Fits A Little Too Well
(Or, Crewel learns what can happen to a dorm when there is no one taking care of it for 50-some years)
AN: I started writing this one on a lark, but I really liked it so I figured, why not post it? There are a lot of little background things that I haven't gotten into in this story but I may get to them in a later chapter. But I'm down to explain if people ask, so go ahead if you want to know what's up.
I mostly wanted to get into the horrors of a house that's been abandoned for years at a time in this chapter, and I'm quite pleased with them so far.
Maybe I'll get to the rest of the cool things later. XD
AO3 Link!
Crewel wasn't a fan of the Ramshackle Dorm. As far as he was concerned, it was an eyesore on the esteemed Night Raven College's campus. He'd never understood why the Headmage hadn't had the place torn down and replaced with something more useful to the school after the dorm had been shut down.
Although, at the moment, he supposed it was a good thing that he hadn't done that.  Since it gave them a place for the magic-less puppy to stay after the school carriages accidentally snatched him.
(They needed to have that checked out. The carriages picking up people who weren't even students was a problem.)
He was uncouth and unrefined, but at least he seemed to be sensible.
The puppy had taken time to approach each teacher after class and warn them that some of his assignments may be turned in late throughout the year, as he had to do repairs to the dorm he was staying in along with the work he needed to meet the school's criteria. And the unspoken fact that he would be doing all that by hand on his own, as the barely tolerated familiar staying with him would be all-but-useless for such a task.
Crewel did have to give the puppy credit. He wasn't afraid of hard work or getting his hands dirty.
But he had begun to wonder if, perhaps, such a task would be too much for a single student to manage alone.
The buckled floor he'd found when the student led him to the mostly cleaned sitting room certainly suggested it. (Sort of cleaned? It seemed cleaner than the great of the place at the moment. The whole place was still repulsive.) It was the first of many clues as to the house’s state.
Though he couldn't help raising a brow at the chairs lying on their sides near a very large garbage bag. And with the windows wide open as well, the curtains he knew had once been there were gone.
Upon closer inspection of the heaps, he could see rubber gloves and a rather sharp-looking knife lying there as well. The puppy caught the look and let out a huff.
“Yeah, you’re gonna want to sit on the plain wood chairs in here, Prof. Anythin’ with cloth on it is a giant mold patch now thanks to the leaky roof and the cracked windows. I’m carving as much of it off as I can to throw it out.” He rocked back on his heels, nodding to the garbage bag. Well, that explained that. “Might be able to salvage the wood parts, but the cushions are goners. Grim is outside with Ace studying because this shi- er, stuff was making him sick. I’ve been tying a rag that I got from the school store over my face to keep from feeling the same.”
Ah, mold. Yes, that made sense for how old the dorm was and how long it’s been since anyone was staying there. Of course, there would be-  Wait.
“Leaking roof?” he asked, a trickle of alarm in the back of his mind. Water leaks could do a  lot of damage, but when it froze and melted during the winters…
“Oh yeah, the roof’s got a lot of them. Found out during the storm a couple days ago. Had to dig through every closet I could find to get enough buckets for ‘em.” He let out a gusty sigh, scratching at his still-growing mustache. He glanced upward with a grimace. “I’m dreading when I finally get to clearin’ out the top floors of this place. Which is why I wanted to ask you about stuff for clearing out mold.”
He pointed to a door further down the hall, his jaw setting.
“Especially for the bathroom down there. I think one of the old students forgot some medicine in the cabinet when they left the dorm. I wouldn’t be surprised if it could get up and walk by now if it felt like it, so I need something strong to get rid of it. Even if I can’t use the bathrooms very much right now.”
“And what makes you say that?” Crewel asked. Surely the bathrooms weren’t that disgusting.
“Cause the pipes might blow if do.”
What.
“The pipes have probably frozen over multiple times over the years. So it’s probably messed them up a lot.” He continued, not even noticing the way his new teacher had frozen. “If you send pipes into full use after something like that, it can cause the weakened seals to burst, and you can’t just patch ‘em or else you might end up breakin’ them up in your hands. I’d love to hire a pro to take a look at ‘em and see how much can be safely patched and how much would be better off replaced but…”
He shrugged helplessly at Crewel. He didn’t need to finish the sentence.
Because of his arrival, he had nothing but the clothes on his back. And he certainly had no money to do all the repairs and refurbishing that Ramshackle needed to be inhabitable for a student. Surely the headmage was allowing some form of budget to cover the boy’s efforts to restore the dorm? He wasn’t expecting the boy to do it all out of his own pocket by working at the school store, was he?
The boy certainly couldn’t ask his parents to help pay for it all…
“And how much of this is our esteemed headmage helping cover?” The puppy tilted his head in confusion. He felt his heart sinking. “The headmage has given you a budget for this work, hasn’t he?”
“No? He hasn’t really said anything about helping cover the repair costs for this place. Ace, uh, one of the Heartsyble guys, has been helping with food ever since he got booted from his dorm for eating a tart from the communal fridge without asking first. Most of it’s dry stock but… Yeah.” He looked a bit uncomfortable, glancing back toward the kitchen.
(By the Seven, he didn’t even want to think about the state of the kitchen if the rest of the building was anything to go by.)
Crewel was rapidly re-evaluating the knowledge he’d had about the dorm, the skills of his student, and the stupidity of the headmage for just dumping a student there without even considering the health and safety risks of them staying there.
He took in a breath, held it, and then slowly let it out.
“We will make a list. Of the essentials needed for this building to be comfortable, and safe to live in for however long you’re going to be here. I will call the needed people to get price evaluations and speak with the headmage about setting a repair budget for your work.” He looked down at the student in front of him, who stilled at the sharpened edge of his gaze. “If you are going to be doing the work restoring this building yourself, then you need the funds to do it right. Now, show me the rooms you’ve been looking at using and we can start building up the basics.”
This was going to be far more work than he had been ready for, never mind a lone, magicless student that had been abducted and left to (practically) fend for themselves. (The dorm barely counted as a safe place to stay in its current state.)
And Crewel fully planned to make Crowly share in the misery as well, until he put in the work to fix it.
(Crowly was not ready for the list of extreme hazards that their student was facing being thrown on his desk by the furious Crewel. But it took very little persuading to set a budget to rebuild the dorm. They could justify why the abandoned dorm needed this much work to the school board later. For now, they needed to ensure their student wasn’t poisoned by airborne mold spores or worse while they were stuck at the school.)
(Cab was just happy when Crewel told him that both a plumber and a handyman had been booked to come by in a few days to take a look at the bathrooms and Kitchen.)

Night Raven College: A (Loose) Year's Timeline
I got frustrated that I couldn't find a timeline of events for Disney Twisted Wonderland, to help me figure out which "yearly" events happened when and at what time of year each Story happened during.
So, like the Madwoman I am, I tried to make one of my own.
Just so you know, this is based on when they happen in a single year and not which years they happen at the school (since, despite game logic, I refuse to believe that insanity happens in a single year), as well as the rough estimate of when each overblot happened based on context clues and irl events they match and when the game holds them. (please note, this doesn’t include the Japan-exclusive events)
Since NRC is 4 year school, I would assume that some events wouldn’t be yearly or happen in the same year. This is just a general “yearly calendar” timeline. So specific one-time events aren't really included (like the Tsumtsum or the Apprentice Chef ones), nor are the ones that don't have stories. And since the school is based on the Western school year, it starts in the fall and not spring!
I hope my crazy is useful to someone!

If I've missed an event or you can think of a "normal" school event that should have been included but isn't, let me know and I'll add it to the list!
This is meant to be a loose timeline for what would be put on a calendar (or a fanfic writer would want included) so it doesn't include EVER SINGLE event that's been held.
Anyway, have fun with these folks!
3/13/24 Edit: I fixed a few things! Vil's and Idia's overblots happened in February along with Beanfest, it's a shockingly busy month apparently. If there are any other inconsistencies, please let me know so I can fix them!
(knowing how things progressed in the story, I'm starting to wonder if Malleus' Overblot was in March... God an overblot a month is insane XD )

Paperinik Villains
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know where I could find a list of the villains for Paperinik/Duck Avenger?
I know there are more than just the ones that appear in PKNE but I just can't find a list with their names so I could look them up. Could I get some help finding or even making one?
I know the Mad Ducktor, but it feels like he's the only non-pkne villain I know about.

Psychonaut Wonderland (?)
I feel the need to share a thought for crossovers:
Psychonauts and Twisted Wonderland.
Like, Yuu is a Psychonauts Junior Agent/Intern who gets snatched by this magic school and is steadily psychoanalyzing everyone around them and mentally listing all the things they're probably dealing with because what else can they do??
They can't do magic, so the only stuff they can really do is bookwork. And they can't learn more for Psychonauts because they're in another world! All they can do is keep from falling out of practice with the stuff they have clearance to use on their own.
But also, they have 0 qualms with using the stuff they have the ok to use on everyone else.
Levitate shit at random? Sure, why lift with your hands when you can just pick it up with your thoughts?
Use pyrokinesis to start up the fireplace? Yeah! Exploding stuff with your mind is fun.
Telekineses to throw things at people? Hell yeah, how are they gonna prove it was you?
Eavesdrop telepathically while investigating? Absolutely gonna do it! What better way to know who's responsible?
Pull an undercover mission to get shit for one of the students you like? See how long it takes for them to realize someone else is there.
If they keep the Psy-Portal with them, then you can build a mindscape for Yuu to race through to take out an Overblot (or something). Have fun with a character who can get into everyone's heads, literally!
