writing a resume from scratch

as with literally everything i write, this got really fucking long! like, wordcounter.net estimates this will take 7 minutes to read. so i’ve placed the bulk of this post under a read more

this is not a quick tips kind of post; this is a detailed breakdown of how to write a resume from scratch, with examples that are largely taken from my own resume. this is primarily a resource for people who don’t know where to start with writing a resume, not for people who just want resume hacks

i’m saying all this so i don’t get people in my inbox complaining about how long this is. writing a resume takes a lot of time and effort, and this post does not shy away from that

creating a resume will take you a while, especially if this is your first attempt. don’t be discouraged! take breaks, and don’t try to make the perfect resume on the first try. this tutorial is designed to be completed in rounds

it usually takes me a week to get a new master resume into working order

don’t worry about page length right now. you should make a multipage master resume that contains every relevant experience before making a 1-page resume. after you’ve made the master, you can build custom resumes from it for job applications

this post is best viewed on desktop, because i use nested bullets, and tumblr mobile hates those

let’s get into it!

step 1:

list out everything you’ve ever done that could feasibly count as a resume entry: extracurriculars, jobs, volunteer positions, research, organizations you were a part of (professional or casual), freelance work, long-term hobbies. i will refer to each different experience as an “entry”

for each entry, write where (city + state) and when (timespan) you did that thing

ex. tritones a cappella group, los angeles, ca, august 20xx - present

going forward, update this list as you join or complete new jobs/hobbies/whatever so that you don’t have to wrack your brain a year down the road wondering how long you held down that job or leadership role

step 2:

describe each entry

use bullet points to list out all the things you did within that role. start with the big picture, then move on to the small stuff

big picture: the goal of the role/organization/research, overarching and long-term projects, what results you were trying to achieve + why

ex. “studied the neuroanatomy and synaptopathy of the inner ear to determine the role of glutamate receptors in hearing loss”

small stuff: literal day-to-day tasks, every software and hardware you worked with, any particularly successful moments

basically, walk through a typical day or week in this role and list out every single thing you have to do, even the grunt work.

ex. “used redcap to administer neuropsychological batteries and collect biological data”

ex. “designed and implemented a novel article format that yielded a 10% increase in audience retention”

if you still have access to the original job posting or a corporate description of responsibilities for your role, pull that up and see how much you can paraphrase from it

no duty is too stupid rn. did you google weather forecasts for your boss every week? write it down. you can make it fancy or choose to delete it later

step 3:

fancify this shit

rewrite your bullet points from step 2 with better jargon. tell your employers what you did in a concise yet assertive manner

it helps to break down each point into its most basic components, which you can then generalize or rephrase

ex. “googled weather forecasts” might become “compiled weekly reports on changing data points to assess weather trends over time”

use action words. you can find resources all over the internet for this, but if you’re still struggling, shoot me an ask and i’ll link some of the resources i’ve used myself

caution: you don’t want to sound like you used a thesaurus on every word. make sure you aren’t obscuring the meaning of your bullet points. “googled weather forecasts” should not become “utilized online databases to assemble weekly communications on meteorological variations”

start thinking about how your responsibilities for each entry relate to a) what skills you want to showcase and b) what the employer wants from you. does the employer want you to demonstrate familiarity with online databases, or does the employer want you to demonstrate familiarity with weather forecasts? your bullet point for “googled the weather” will change depending on the answer to these questions

step 4:

look at the big picture

you probably have a metric buttload of bullet points for each entry. now you need to cut that down to what’s relevant. think about which bullets are most impressive, noteworthy, and descriptive of each entry

aim for 3-5 bullet points. any less than that and you have to ask why you’re including that entry. any more than that and the employer’s eyes will glaze over

try to combine bullet points

ex. “identify content and write articles when necessary,” “maintain a pool of freelancers,” and “identify key graphics and maintain tagging structure when uploading articles” all involve the process of creating an article, so they can be combined into: “identify content, assign stories to freelancers, write articles when necessary, and upload with appropriate graphics and tags”

start thinking about tailoring your word choices and bullet points to what the employer is looking for

if you can, pull up the job posting or a sample resume for the job you’re applying to and compare your resume to it. are you using similar language? are you demonstrating similar skills?

finally, eliminate redundancy in your resume, both in every individual entry and in the resume as a whole. if a skill can be demonstrated by multiple entries, you only need to list it once

kill your darlings! it may sound harsh, but the things that seem super impressive to you probably won’t even be a blip on the employer’s radar. “but saying i made coffee runs shows i’m dependable and a team player!” the employer isn’t looking that deep, my dude. you can showcase your dependability in your cover letter or your interview

you should redo steps 3 and 4 several times, soliciting feedback from your parents, peers, career center, etc each time

step 5:

add the Other Stuff

education

typically, you should only include institutions for the highest level of education you’ve attended. (undergrad and grad school both count as college for this purpose)

there are exceptions to this, depending on how long you’ve spent at a higher level of education, whether your alma mater will earn you brownie points, whether you had genuinely impressive accomplishments earlier in your life, etc.

once you hit, like, 2 years in college, you should try to get rid of high school achievements and showcase college achievements instead

list the school name, city + state, degree type (BA/MA/etc) and expected graduation date (even if it’s in the future), your major(s) + minor(s), and any related coursework (ie preprofessional tracks, specific courses related to the job). you can list your gpa if you feel it’s relevant, but i caution against doing this once you’ve graduated

ex. (where // indicates a new line) harvard university, boston, ma, may 2020 // bachelor of arts in cognitive neuroscience // minor: english: focus in creative writing // related coursework: pre-medicine, computer science 101 and 102 // gpa: 3.9/4.0 (dean’s list, all semesters)

skills

a list of items without descriptions. you can do a bulleted list or you can list the entries in paragraph form, separated by commas or bold bullets

hard skills: hardware, software, languages (spoken and programming), digital and communication platforms, social media proficiencies, other technologies and devices

ex. microsoft office suite, java, wordpress, slack, familiarity with ap and chicago style

soft skills: general qualities, buzzwords, personality traits

ex. leadership, conflict resolution, time management

certifications and awards

can be one section or two depending on how many of each you have

list each one on a separate bullet point

for each, write the certification or award, the institution that granted it, and the month and/or year you received it if relevant

publications

tbh i just cite my publications in the following format instead of following a style guide

lastname, firstname. “article or chapter title.” book title, publisher (aka company or website). publication date.

if you’re the sole author, you don’t need to list the author’s name

interlude: stretch the truth a bit. don’t lie about having experience or skills you don’t, but if you can reasonably google how to do something, boom! you’re proficient in it. if you worked with two team members who never pulled their weight? you just became the sole project lead. were you a beta reader for anime fanfiction back in the day? you’re a freelance editor, baby!

step 6:

now you have to organize all the entries from step 4

separate your entries into relevant sections. what’s relevant might change based on what you’re applying for

i’ve had, at various points in my life, some subset of the following sections: work experience, volunteer experience, leadership experience, research experience, writing experience, other relevant experience

list sections in order of descending importance

write all entries in reverse chronological order: start with the most recent and work your way backwards

write all bullet points in order of descending importance. unfortunately, i don’t have any quick tips on determining what’s important, but it helps to look at the job posting and see what matters to the employer

i tend to list big picture goals, then personal accomplishments (leadership skills, projects), then daily tasks

step 7:

format this shit

you can find resume templates online or in your word processor. templates serve as a good starting point, but i recommend creating your own format so you can edit and customize it with ease. this will probably involve a lot of fiddling with indentations, paragraph spacing, and moving things around

don’t go smaller than 10pt font

mess around with line and paragraph spacing to get the right balance of white space. if you’re curious about what i use, shoot me an ask and i’ll share my weirdly specific settings

keep an eye out for bullet points with orphan words (ie lines containing only 1-3 words) and get rid of them to streamline your resume

margins can be anywhere between 0.5″ and 1″

consistency is key! make sure each entry has the same kind of spacing. don’t use hyphens in one entry and en dashes in another

in the header, write your name, email, phone number, and address

interlude: save this version of your resume as your master resume. this gives you an unedited list of everything you ever did that you can now pick and choose from when you apply to jobs. update this list every 3-6 months.

step 8:

customize your resume for the job application

unless you’ve been in the industry for several years, your job-specific resume should be no more than 1 page

if you have more than 1 page: compare the job listing and your resume side by side and ask which entries demonstrate your capabilities most effectively, which bullet points are the punchiest, and if there’s any extraneous info

match each job requirement to one bullet point on your resume. then match each bullet point on your resume to a requirement in the listing. get rid of any bullet points that don’t meet either of those criteria. if multiple bullet points match the same job requirement, get rid of the extra bullet points

if you have significantly less than 1 page: see if you can add more bullet points or reformat your resume to introduce some more white space. a 2-column set-up is great for this, with section headers on the left and bullets on the right. do you have any hobbies you’re forgetting about? any soft skills you could add?

emulate the language of the job posting; use the same action words, the same soft skills

coda

your resume should work in tandem with your cover letter, but that’s a topic for another post. maybe in another 6 months i’ll write a post on that, too

always save your resume as a pdf! you don’t want your employer to have access to your metadata

15 Nov – Applications close. 22 Nov – Santas assigned. 27 Nov – Santas confirm assignments. 25 Dec to 31 Dec – Post the gifts! 5 Jan 2020 – Tell me if you didn’t get your gift. 9 Jan 2020 – Backup santas notified. 31 Jan 2020 – Backup santa gifts posted!

The close of each day is 11:59pm HKT (GMT + 8h). Please note that my timezone is ahead of most countries.

How do I join?

To enter, you must read the rules and complete the application form linked on the rules page.

You must send in the application form before 15th NOVEMBER 2019 at 11:59pm HKT (GMT+8h).

If you apply, please commit to creating and giving a gift.

What’s this password thing you have in the application? What password?

If you don’t know the password, please read the entire rules page carefully from top to bottom. For easy reference, here’s a link to the rules and the mobile-friendly rules.

Applications with an incorrect password will be rejected during santa/ giftee assignments, even if applicants received the response email.

Oh no! I made a mistake in my application form/ I got the password wrong/ I left out something. What do I do?

You can edit your application anytime before applications close on 15 November 2019 (2359h HKT). You should have received a response email with the edit link.

I made a typo on my password. Will I be rejected/ do I need to edit my application?

Nah, that’s fine, I’m willing to accept typos. Your application will get denied if the answer clearly shows that you don’t know the password.

Who sees the information I put in my application?

The middle section with your preferences will be copy-pasted and sent word-for-word to your santa. Your santa will also get your tumblr URL/ username. If you addressed any comments to your santa in your miscellaneous comment section, I’ll pass those along too.

Only the mods will see your email and other details. For now, that’s only me (@codedredalert) and @narramin. Since the volume of work got overwhelming, I got her on board as a mod.

She’s a close friend I trust, and while I don’t think we’ll have anyone else joining us as a moderator, If you’re very concerned about other people finding out about your email address and other application details, maybe give this event a miss.

What do I have to do when I post my gift?

Mention the name of your giftee in the post (like this: @url). Also mention @opsecretsanta2019 in the post.

Tag #opsecretsanta2019 and any appropriate compulsory warning tags (#n/sfw, #graphic violence, #major character death, #noncon or dubcon, #underage , #chose not to use warnings , #no warnings apply).

Consider writing a nice message to the giftee to go along with the gift, if you like.

How do you select Secret Santas?

I sort participants by naughty and nice into a SFW group and a NSFW group. After that, both groups are separately put through a random generator. Once giftees are drawn from the generator, I will manually check to make sure santas/ giftees share at least one mutual interest.

You should not be giving to the same person you’re receiving from.

What does it mean if I’m in the NSFW group?

If you choose NSFW, it means you are okay with making or receiving NSFW content AND are at least 21 years of age.

You do not have to create a NSFW gift if you don’t feel like it. You may or may not receive a NSFW gift.

Can I make/ receive NSFW?

To potentially receive or send NSFW material, you must be 21 years or older when applications close on 15 November 2019 2359h.

If you make something NSFW for your giftee, please put it under a read more and tag it appropriately. If your NSFW gift is/ could be flagged, please post it on another site and provide a link in a tumblr post.

Why must I be 21+ to receive/ give NSFW? I’m an adult in my country.

I don’t want drama/ legal issues about adults sending NSFW to minors. 21 is the highest age of majority as far as I’m aware, so that’s what I set it as to cover everyone. Sorry, kiddo.

I’m not 21+ yet but I will be by the time applications close. Can I still say I’m 21+?

What is considered NSFW?

NSFW components for the purposes of this event (loosely based on the R rating guidelines of the Motion Picture Association of America):

(1) Violence: Canon-typical depictions of violence are generally SFW (eg. brawls, blood, stabbing). However, violence that is detailed, realistic, extreme or persistent would make a work NSFW.

(2) Language/ Profanity / Swearing: Generally, swearing is SFW, but you’re encouraged to keep it mild. You have a maximum of one (1) singular “fuck” to give in a SFW work. Use it wisely. Excessive or extremely graphic swearing would make a work NSFW.

(3) Drugs/ Substance Abuse:

Canon-typical depiction of smoking is SFW (eg. chain smoking or smoking several cigarettes/cigars at once is SFW). However, smoking/ nicotine addiction that is detailed, realistic, extreme or persistent would make a work NSFW.

Canon-typical drinking of large amounts of alcohol is SFW. However, alcoholism/ alcohol addiction that is detailed, realistic, extreme or persistent would make a work NSFW.

Mention of drugs used in a medical context is SFW. Otherwise, any drug use or mention of drug use would make a work NSFW.

(4) Nudity and sexual content:

Nudity that is depicted visually (eg. art) is NSFW, regardless of whether it is sexual or not. Please post a censored/ partial preview of the art and link the full piece on another site. (Tumblr might flag it otherwise lol.)

Non-visual nudity (eg. writing) is NSFW if it is sexually-oriented. Please ensure that it is under a read-more.

All sexual content is NSFW regardless of medium.

Hugs, kisses and cuddling are SFW.

Can I opt to be in the NSFW list, but still say I don’t want to receive/ create a certain type of NSFW (eg. specifically not sexual content, or drug abuse)?

Yup! Generally, giving more information in your application is better. It’s good to be clear and upfront about your likes and dislikes. It helps me a lot in deciding if I need to re-roll when I double-check your random match. It helps your santa know what not to give you too.

Is ____ pairing/ content/ gen allowed?

As long as they’re canon One Piece characters, yes. This event aims to be as inclusive as possible. Just make sure you tag appropriately.

Are OCs/ self-insert/ Y/N fic allowed?

Sorry, nope. I’m sure you and your OCs are lovely, however, this is a One Piece event, so please only feature canon One Piece characters.

You CAN sneak in a little extra cameo if you really want. Eg. a random person in the background/ a random shopkeeper in your fic. But the focus must be on canon One Piece characters.

I personally consider ____ content problematic. Will you allow it?

The compulsory warning tags (following those on Ao3) generally cover a wide range of potentially offensive content. Please be responsible for your own content regulation by blacklisting the necessary tags. I cannot be responsible for everyone’s content consumption.

I’m personally triggered by _____. Can you tag it?

Your personal triggers will already be accounted for in the application form and the information sent to your santa. So, this shouldn’t be a problem for your gift. Also, there are the compulsory warning tags for you to blacklist if necessary.

If you think there is still a very high chance that other people’s gifts will have your trigger, send me an ask off-anon proposing (1) a feasible identification system and (2) a tag name. We’ll see if we can work something out.

I promise to hear you out. However, I will exercise my discretion as to whether it is feasible for me to impose your request on every post on this blog. If your request requires a moral judgment or a lot of work on my part, I am less likely to impose your request.

It’s not possible for me to please everyone. I’ve done my best to cover the generally-accepted warnings. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

What kinds of gifts are allowed?

Anything digital as long as you personally created it for your giftee!

SUGGESTED minimum guidelines for different types of content are below (feel free to go above and beyond if your heart desires):

– Art – 1 artwork, sketches are okay as long as characters are recognisable

– AMVs – 30 seconds. Please use only official art/ anime/ movies as your base.

– Animations – 3 seconds, sketches are okay as long as characters are recognisable

– Animatics – 30 seconds, sketches are okay as long as characters are recognisable

– Edits – 2 edits of good image quality. Please use only official art as your base.

– Fanfiction – 100 words (prose), 20 words (poetry)

– GIFsets – 2 gifs of good image quality. Please use only official art/ anime/ movies as your base.

– Music cover – 1 minute. Please cover only official One Piece songs/ motifs.

– Playlist – 10 songs. Please try to find out about your giftee’s music taste and cater to that if possible.

– Podfic/ audio reading – You MUST get permission in writing from the fic author before making the recording. In your recording, you MUST clearly state the original author, the title of the original fic, and the website where the original fic can be found. In your post, you MUST give LINKED credit to both the original author AND the original fic.

Do I need to meet a minimum for my gift?

There are suggested minimum guidelines for different types of content, but there are no strict minimums. The gift creation for this event is intended to be very achievable, stress-free, and accessible even to first-time creators.

Do I have to follow a winter theme in the gift?

Nope. Anything goes! Just try to do something you think your giftee would like according to the information you were given.

Can I send something in the mail?

Sorry, please don’t. This exchange is digital-only.

When should I send my gift to my Secret Santa?

Any time on or between 25 December 2019 and 31 December 2019.

Can I let my giftee know who I am?

Only once you post your gift. In other words, yes but not earlier than 25 December 2019.

Can I contact my giftee to clarify things about the gift?

Yes but you cannot reveal your identity before you post your gift (eg. use anon asks). If you can’t contact your giftee via tumblr, just do your best with the information you have.

What if my giftee doesn’t have anon asks on/ doesn’t respond?

If you can’t contact your giftee anonymously via tumblr, just do your best with the information you have. Most people wrote detailed applications, so this should be workable.

If giftees are feeling up to it, consider keeping anon asks open for the duration of this event so santas can make clarifications if they need to. It might mean that the gift turns out more to your personal taste.

Can the mods contact my giftee to ask things for me?

We’d love to but we can’t afford to take on the extra workload of being the go-between for everyone’s giftee questions.

How many mods are there?

Two. The older posts like this one use mostly “I”, since I started this event alone, but beacuse of the number of participants and the workload I got another person on board.

My art/ writing/ main is @codedredalert, and the second mod’s writing/ cursed/ main is @narramin.

Have you, the mods, ever run an event like this before?

Nope. I, Red, have participated in maybe two. Take that as you will.

Suggestions and advice from experienced people are welcome! I may not be able to use/ implement them in this event, but the learning is appreciated.

And, with Ron, the feeling of being a failure or not living up to anyone else, that deep insecurity and the way he lashes out when he’s been hurt I understand a lot, especially since I get older.

When I started to consider the idea of going for a third character, there was a list; on the one hand, I thought the idea of playing somebody truly dark would be fun to go back to. But then, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that as fun as writing truly dark characters (ie, Bellatrix) can be, it wouldn’t be a new challenge. And I wanted a new challenge. So I began looking through all of the open characters and came to the realization that writing a Muggleborn is something I haven’t done in far too long. So I began looking at open bios again, and Selina drew me in instantly.

The more I looked at Selina and began to really think about it, the more that she started to really speak to me. Here you have a woman who is so determined to make a difference that she never stops pushing herself to meet expectations that she places on herself. And they aren’t easy expectations by any means; she’s incredibly intelligent because being sub-par at anything makes her skin crawl. She’s so well-rounded and well-versed because to do anything less than would be a disservice to the gift she was given. Because that’s what being a witch is to her, a privilege. Here you have a woman who, as a child, was loved but felt ordinary. And then she turned eleven. Then, she received a letter that changed her life. Suddenly the world opened up to so many new possibilities, so much new knowledge and opportunities for the young wide-eyed girl. Not taking full advantage of it would be the worst thing that she could do.

Selina’s intelligence was something she fought for, wanting to immerse herself in whatever she could possibly find about magic. Her family was entirely Muggle, it wasn’t as if they could ever teach her about it. If anything, they asked her about it more than anything else. She was the student who self-taught so she could debate with her professors during class - the first degree ‘self indulgent, insufferable know-it-all’ that Hermione is so frequently referred to as. There’s a reason people groan when Hermione raises her hand and recites things from memory: the staff has seen it before. In yet another Muggleborn Gryffindor who could be too smart for her own good.

She was never a stranger to the bigotry that came with being of Muggle heritage; people scoffed at her, every insult in the book was tossed at her. More than once Selina was told her blood was dirty, that she had no place in the magical world she was part of. For awhile, it got to her, but with time she realized that if anyone was without in the wizarding world it was the elitists that were afraid of anything they didn’t understand. That was when her skin grew thicker, and she decided if she was going to be seen as a disgusting Mudblood, she would go all out. So she outsmarted everyone she could find, made every Pureblood in her class despise her solely because she could. It became a sport more than anything else, proving she had just as much right to being a witch as anyone else.

But then she left school, and the war started. Suddenly her quick tongue and determination to hold her own put her family’s life in jeopardy. Her parents were going to be defenseless against magic if anyone chose to go after them, and it was as terrifying as it was disgusting. She sought out alliance the first chance she got. It wasn’t her fault Aversio got to her first, but she didn’t ever regret it. Joining the 'rebel forces’ gave her a chance to gain protection for her family - her parents and twin brothers, a set of siblings ten years younger and clearly a surprise. Selina vowed to protect them no matter the cost, even made an Unbreakable Vow to the organization. She fell into something that she couldn’t ever step out of, but it kept her family safe. And with any luck would end with change, making sure Muggleborns and anyone else could life freely.

Selina is angry. She’s distrustful of the Order and the alliance of Aversio, not understanding why anyone would wish to align themselves with people who don’t ever seem to do anything but make plans and sit on their hands. The hall was dark and empty as she trudged along, her boots echoing on the wooden floors providing the only source of sound. On both sides of her flanked burly wizards she recognized by face alone. Her escorts into a situation that could no longer be backed out of. That was what Selina reminded herself of as she entered, finally recognizing the wizard who had recruited her in the first place. No turning back now.

He raised his eyebrows expectantly as she made her way into the dimly lit, otherwise vacant room. The men who had shown her in shut the door, one standing beside it as a guard while the other raised his wand and began twirling with boredom between his fingers as he watched Selina and his boss take each other in. A lump formed in her throat as she remembered what she was about to do, but she was quick to force it back. There was no time to dwell on it now. All the secrecy and hushed plans had been leading to this. The promise that her family - her brothers, her father, her mother - would be protected was too powerful to pass up. I’m a student again...

I graduated in 2015 (last week was my two-year post-grad anniversary) and have since been working diligently to not only progress in my current job but also learn, curate my portfolio, and set myself up for a successful career. With in those efforts, I have decided to go back to school.

Initially I wanted to full-on masters degree experience. I wanted a big fancy MBA from a big fancy school that I could brag about. I wanted to sit in classes and collaborate with other professionals. Then, the more research I did the more I realized I was not cut out for big and fancy. Not only could I not swallow a $100,000+ price tag but having to stick to a specific class schedule was just not conducive to my current lifestyle the way it was during my undergrad. Right off the bat I knew two things: I didn’t want to quit my job or take time off work to go back to school and that my employer does not offer education reimbursements. Since that adjusted my search, I started to look for part-time programs. Ones that offered online courses were an absolute plus. Then, during an interview for a program I thought I was dead set on, they told me I was too young and too creative and it hit me hard. First of all because I’ve always been the young one. I’m typically the youngest one on any team, everyone I know professionally seems to think I’m at least five years older than I am, and I am currently the youngest staff member at my current job. I know they were referring to the age of my career (the typical student of this particular program had nearly a decade of professional experience), but my I am ambitious and competent and my age has never held me back before. That being said, even for a certificate course, it is hard. Each course is two weeks long and we have FOUR PROJECTS AND TWO DISCUSSIONS due in that window. Plus several ungraded worksheet assignments. Right out of the gate it was an adjustment. However, a lot of the curriculum (so far) are things I have learned previously as well as taught several times so the concepts aren’t brand new (yet), just the application and scope of them is new. I have also gotten very comfortable in my 9-5 and sometimes on the weekend schedule. I used to be able to work 16+ hours days 7-days a week no problem. Now, forcing my self to do anything but watch Youtube videos when I get from for work has been a struggle. But I’ve pushed through and figured out what works best for me homework wise (turns out it’s during lunch, and right after work but before going home). That being said, being able to collaborate in an educational space (that isn’t work) has been very eye opening for me and worth every second. Many of my colleagues are not only in industries I would never have an insight to regularly (many work with hotels, tech, manufacturing, etc), but most are also much further along in their careers than I am. Out of 30 or so students I would say half hold the title of VP somewhere in some capacity. Regardless I am able to hold my own and am learning from a well-rounded group of people. I am also the only one with an artistic background to being able to contribute my views adds a lot of variety to our class discussions. Personally it just solidified that what I’m studying is not just something I am interested in, it is something I am good at. Which makes all the hard work, late nights, and stress, completely worth it. Stay tuned as I begin my second class. Hopefully my outlook stays positive moving forward!

Update: I began writing this during my first week of class. I have since turned in the last assignment, got a 100% for the class and a rave review from my professor on my work. Woo! Now on to the next one!

Whenever you hear the word 'Bot' you probably imagine a robot like they show in the movies. They are bots too, rather smart ones. But we are referring to a different kind of bot here.

We can define a bot as a script that can be used to automate certain tasks which are either tedious or difficult for humans. There are good bots and bad bots, and there is a very fine line between them.

Before we start, let me tell you one thing, This tutorial only discusses the part which involves uploading videos to YouTube. We will be using a sample video here.

If you create a bot which uploads video regularly (like Webdriver Torso, which we will talk more about at the end of the article) you need a source for the video.

Also, a warning: make sure you check the copyrights of all videos you upload. The version of the bot I first created uploaded others' videos to YouTube – and you won't believe what happened. I got series of copyright claims and strikes and my channel was ultimately deleted.

So in this tutorial I'll show you how it's done. But if you want to implement it, first find a good source of videos that you can upload without copyright issues.

Why Google Apps Script?

Google Apps Script is a scripting platform developed by google for running light-weight applications. Its syntax is based on JavaScript. If you already know Javascript you will find it really easy.

The reason we are using Google Apps Script is because it makes it really easy to build this bot. It has in-built support for most Google products like Gmail, Sheets, Forms, and Youtube. And it's free.

Overview of Google Apps Script

Google Apps Script has an online editor and filesystem. It doesn't need any deployment, you just have to save your code and it's running.

If you open the Apps Script editor, it will look something like this:

Just like any other text editor, it has a sidebar with list of files, a menu, and space for writing code. The code files have a .gs extension (probably for Google script). And most important, all the code must be inside some function – anonymous code won't be executed.

There are two special functions, doPost() and doGet(). As the name suggests, they are used for handling POST and GET requests, respectively. We won't be using them here, but if you want to create this bot like an API that can be called using HTTP requests, it would be useful.

Getting Started

Unlike other tutorials, I won't tell you to clone a GitHub repository. First, because I want you to learn and code along with me. Second, the code isn't that big, and you need to understand how it works.

This is the function that uploads a given video to a YouTube channel:

Enabling YouTube API

Before you run this function, you have to enable YouTube Data API V3. You must be familiar with what an API is, so let me try to explain that with an example.

Google Maps is a great service. It has lots of amazing tools. Suppose you want to use those features in your app, let's say for building a smart digital invitation card with an embedded map.

Normally, to do this you need the source code of Maps. But that code is not open-source. And it would be foolish to give someone source code just because they want to use some feature. That's where an API comes handy.

APIs or Application Programming Interfaces, are a way for developers to allow others to use your app's features without disclosing the source code.

In this case, YouTube's API allows developers to use YouTube's features in their apps, or to control some YouTube channel after authentication. If you have an idea of what an API is, let's continue.

To enable the YouTube Data API, navigate to Resources > Advanced Google Services. You will see something like the below. It may ask you to accept Google Cloud's terms before proceeding if you don't have a project already set up. If asked, accept the terms.

Scroll to the bottom. You will see YouTube Data API V3. Usually, you need to create a Google Cloud Project to use it. But App Script creates a project for itself, so you don't need to create something separate. Enable it and close the popup. Now you are good to go.

Running the function

You have to paste the code given below (same as above) into the text editor and save it from the File > Save menu.

After saving it, you have to navigate to the Run > Run function > Upload menu. It will look something like this:

Now this is where the usefulness of App Script becomes apparent. Here, you can give it permission to upload videos to your account. It will show you warnings that the app is not verified – but don't worry, that's a security step Google takes to prevent malicious apps.

But here, you are the developer, so you can ignore the warning and give permission from the Advanced button on the bottom left. It will ask you for two permissions, as shown:

Permission to manage your YouTube account is a serious permission. Though it's safe in this particular instance, never give this permission to any app you don't trust. It will give the app complete access to your YouTube account.

And this isn't just the case for YouTube. You should be extra careful before you allow sensitive scopes on any platform, like Twitter, Facebook, GitHub and other social sign-in methods.

After you give that permission, the function will be executed. But nothing will happen as we didn't specify what should be uploaded.

Here, you need to give values to the URL, title, description, and tags variables. Let us take a sample video for our use (remember those copyright issues?).

This is the modified upload() function:

You can Save it and Run the function again. You can see that we changed the URL to a video URL, the title and description were set, and the tags are also set as an array. You can also set privacyStatus to private for testing.

Remember those copyright issues?

As I told you at the start of the tutorial, copyright infringement is a big deal. The above video was removed by YouTube within minutes of uploading.

So, find a good video source first. If you want to generate videos programatically, there are libraries like ffmpeg, but let's not discuss that here. The aim of this article was to create a bot and we did.

Bot that regularly uploads videos

Suppose you find a source for videos and want your bot to regularly upload videos. Google Apps Script has an inbuilt Cron service which will execute your function at regular intervals, like daily, or once a week. You can create a trigger from the dashboard:

You can set the function to be called, the frequency, and other options. Thus we have successfully created a YouTube Uploader Bot.

Webdriver Torso

You may not have heard about it, but this bot (or maybe a superhuman) has uploaded more than 70,000 videos on its youtube channel over a relatively short period of time. And although they are procedurally generated videos, it's still very cool.

You can see that the Eiffel Tower at night video (which is illegal) has the most views. There are conspiracy theories that this channel is owned by YouTube for testing purposes.

Either way, don't get inspired – if you upload this many videos, YouTube will most probably suspend you.

Free Money From the Government for Small Businesses and Independent Contractors: FAQs on the Newly Expanded SBA Grant Program

Under the CARES Act passed on March 27, 2020, independent contractors, small businesses, gig workers, and freelancers are eligible to receive a government grant of up to $10,000. The SBA sometimes refers to these grants as “advances,” but you are not required to repay this money to the government.

The application process involves filling out an SBA form requesting an Economic Injury Disaster Recovery Loan (EIDL), which provides for the advance even if the loan is not granted.

Initially, $10 billion was allocated by the government for these grants, but due to the overwhelming amount of applications, the SBA suspended accepting new applications in mid-April 2020 due to lapse in appropriations for the grants.

The SBA is now lifting the suspension because legislation passed on April 23, 2020, allocating another $60 billion for EIDL and grants thereunder.

Who Is Eligible for the Grants?

In addition to the entities that are already eligible for SBA disaster loans and grants, eligibility was expanded to include:

Sole proprietorships, with or without employees

Independent contractors

Business entities with 500 or fewer employees

Cooperatives and employee-owned businesses

Private non-profits or 501(c)(19) veterans organizations

Tribal small businesses

You must have been in business as of January 31, 2020. Expanded eligibility criteria and the grants are only available until December 31, 2020.

How Much Can I Get from the Grants?

As a result of the very high demand for these grants, the SBA implemented a $1,000 cap per employee on the advance, up to a maximum of $10,000. If you are a freelancer, this apparently effectively limits the advance to $1,000. If you are a business with five employees, then the advance would be limited to $5,000. If you are a business with 10 or more employees, the advance is limited to $10,000.

Where Do I Apply Online for the SBA Grant?

The application should be found at covid19relief.sba.gov/#/ (if for some reason it isn’t there, do a Google search on “SBA disaster loan application.”). (As of this writing, the SBA still needs to update the page to reflect that new appropriations for the grant program have been made by Congress on April 23, 2020.) Background information from the SBA can be found at www.sba.gov/disaster-assistance/coronavirus-covid-19.

I Applied for the SBA Grant Already, But I Have Not Heard Anything. Should I Apply Again?

That depends. If you applied before March 29, 2020, you will need to resubmit your application. Otherwise, the SBA is asking for patience.

What Advice Is There for Completing the SBA Application as an Independent Contractor or Freelancer?

If you are an independent contractor, freelancer, or gig worker, here are some tips on filling out the application:

On the first question, check the second box as you are applying as an independent contractor or sole proprietorship.

You must add your social security number if you are applying as an individual independent contractor.

The form will ask you for the gross revenues for the last 12 months for your independent contractor business and the “cost of goods sold.” You can estimate this based on what happened in 2019. Cost of goods sold means the expenses incurred in the process of providing your service or product as a freelancer or independent contractor.

Where it asks for “Owner” put your name and “100” percent owner.

It will ask for the date the business was established. This is the date you started doing freelance or independent contractor work. Just estimate if you don’t have the exact date, but make sure it was before January 31, 2020.

The form will ask for the bank account to which you want the grant money direct deposited. You need the name of your bank, the account number (the middle number at the bottom of your checks), and the routing number (the number at the bottom left of your checks). See the question below on direct depositing.

For your business phone number, it’s OK to give your cell number.

On the question “Is your business owned by a business entity?”, the answer is no since you are an individual owner.

When the form asks for your business name, just enter your individual name if you don’t have a business name.

You can ignore the question “If anyone assisted you in completing this application …” unless you have in fact gotten help.

Make sure to check the box that says you want to apply for the $10,000 grant (although it will only be $1,000 for independent contractors).

The form should take about 15 minutes to fill out. After it is completed and submitted, the SBA will give you a confirmation number, so keep a copy of that for any follow-up.

How Can I Make Sure I Provide My Correct Direct Deposit Information to the SBA?

The direct deposit information is as follows:

The name of your bank

Your bank account number, which can be up to 17 characters. On the sample check below, the account number is 2020202086.

The “routing number” for your bank, which must contain 9 digits. On the sample check below, the routing number is 250250025.

Double check that you have provided the correct numbers.

How Long Will It Take to Actually Get the Grant Money from the SBA?

The CARES Act originally required the SBA to grant the money within 3 days of application. But due to the overwhelming response, it has not been able to do so. Some people report having received grant money, but many are still waiting. You should anticipate that any new applications could result in a wait of weeks or longer.
