What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
"Jane, did you ever stop to think that... if anything happened to me, I mean anything bad, there wouldn't be any money for you? I wouldn't be here to sign the checks. You wouldn't even have pocket money. Did you ever think of that?"
"Yeah, I've thought about that."
#what ever happened to baby jane?#american cinema#robert aldrich#1962#joan crawford#bette davis#lukas heller#henry farrell#victor buono#wesley addy#bert freed#maidie norman#anna lee#marjorie bennett#anne barton#dave willock#robert cornthwaite#barbara merrill#julie allred#gina gillespie#frank de vol#revisiting after a long long time. watching this as a teen (too many moons ago) it was Joan that bewitched me; i was deeply taken by her‚#fell a little in love even. coming back to it now and I'm baffled how i slept on Bette's performance‚ arguably the showier and more#rewarding (from an actors pov). she's ott and grotesque but there's real depth to the role too‚ she delivers with nuance and there's levels#to the character‚ tragedy too (the completely unexpected way she says the line 'You mean all this time we could have been friends?' is#beautiful). also Buono?? I'd honestly kind of forgotten that there was anyone else in this film but Bette and Joan but my god‚ in his first#major film role‚ he's amazing! and funny! easy to forget just how funny this film is‚ in amongst the horror and the sadness and the waste#of it all. beautiful little film‚ i know it has its followers and is appreciated as a high camp classic‚ but it's honestly so much more#than just that too. Aldrich (truly one of The great genre directors) does wonders with sharp‚ unforgiving black and white photography#(beautifully contrasted with the soft warmer footage of younger J and B from their hollywood heyday). masterfully constructed too

In which I say that this little play sets up the only story that works in the first 42 weeks of the show, the growing friendship between Vicki and David.

The credits for Sam Wood’s IVY (1947, Criterion Channel) play over an image of an urn containing flowers. At their end, the urn becomes a skull. That sets the tone for this gothic noir set in Edwardian England (the original novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes took place in the 1920s). It’s a visually scrumptious film, with producer William Cameron Menzies, a frequent Wood collaborator, supervising production design and even some of the camera set-ups. Joan Fontaine, often in white, looks the perfect young innocent. But she’s actually an ambitious schemer. Having run through husband Richard Ney’s fortune and tired of doctor lover Patric Knowles, she comes up with a plan to rid herself of both so she can seduce wealthy businessman Herbert Marshall. In the 1940s, her evil was so shocking it cost the film at the box office. Today, it seems like fitting revenge for saddling her with three such unmagnetic leading men. Charles Bennett’s screenplay starts with Fontaine presented as a Gothic victim. She’s covered in shadows when she visits a fortune teller (Una O’Connor) whose spooky presence seems to terrorize her.  But when O’Connor advises her to dump her lover because she’s about to meet a man who can solve her problems, Fontaine perks up, and you realize how amoral she is. The actress looks terrific and has some fascinating flirtation scenes, though when she’s being duplicitous, she strays into the Joan Crawford school of energetic overstatement. None of the men are a match for her, but the film has some intriguing character women who more than hold their own, including Lucille Watson as Knowles’ mother, Sara Allgood as his nurse and Rosalind Ivan as Fontaine’s maid, a woman who can find the laughs in a mourning scene. Russell Metty did the moody cinematography, Orry Kelly and Travis Banton created the costumes and composer Daniele Amfitheatrof pours on the harpsichord whenever Fontaine does something particularly evil.

July Reading Summary
I started this month strong, but then hit a small reading-slump (well, not really, I'm just determined to get through a bad book that is bad enough that my brain will only let me read two-three chapters a day before going all blue death), so I only finished three books in July, even though, in my defense, I have about 500 more pages read thrughout three other books, two of which I hoped to finish by the end of the month, but... See above.
Ali Hazlewood: Loathe to Love You Well, it's Ali Hazelwood: you get exactly what you expect. Reasonably witty text, quirky heroines, secretly and not-so-secretly simping guys, and kinda repetitive plot. It's easy to read, pleasant like a fluffy blanket, and rather entertaining if this is your cup of tea, but nothing world-shattering.
Tirzah Price: Pride and Premeditation Or a P&P fanfic with an interesting concept: the characters are not in the posession of estates, but law offices and other businesses (and everything is set in London). Mr. Bennett heads the law firm Longbourne & Sons, and Lizzie's greatest desire is to become a barrister herself, or at least to be officially hired to work for the firm, from which she is barred on regards of her gender. However, her father promises to hire her if she can prove her worth, so when a certain Mr. Bingley is accused of killing his brother-in-law, Lizzie does her best to get him to hire her and to find the actual killer. This is a... curious concept, one I find fascinating to be honest, even though the Regency period doesn't seem to mesh well with a whodunnit mystery (I mean the whole genre was invented 20+ years after the Regency period). There were also some great scenes and ideas, but overall I think it kinda underperformed--this being a very explicit P&P retelling, the reader expects some stuff to happen, but we are so preoccupied by the mystery that some important "canon events" are simply dropped (e.g. Jane and Bingley never even meet "on screen"!).
Jennifer Worth: Farewell to the East End Okay, this a completely different league. Very much like in the case of her first memoir, most of the stories in this book are going to be familiar if you have seen the show, but there is enough stuff that didn't make it onto the screen to keep the reader interested. Also, I realied in shock, many of the stores were actually tamed for call the Midwife, so if you saw the show and then read this book, you are in for some unpleasant surprises--not to mention the chapter about Sister Monica Joan's lady's maid in the late 1800's. There is also a melancholic aspect to it, as the last chapters deal with the closure of the Nonatus House and what happened with the sisters and nurses afterwards. Great book, but not an easy read.

Hey there! I know you don’t get much time to look at asks, so really don’t worry about this, but I just wanted to share this with you. I know you like Only Fools And Horses, and I’ve been thinking about Trigger all day, today. I developed this headcanon that Trigger used to get migraines as a kid/teenager, and Del and Denzil were the only ones who didn’t make fun of him when he shut down, or cried over the pain. Del would even look after him, sometimes, staying with him in the nurse’s office, or letting him nap at his flat when Trig couldn’t make it home. This is one of the reasons Trigger is quite close with Del.
Only Fools and Horses headcanons? In my inbox? Gordon Bennett, Rodders! 😱
Seriously though, everyone should watch OFAH. I mean it. Hilarious, very rewatchable show that can make you laugh and cry. David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst are national treasures. I got to see the musical in the summer of 2019, wearing a bright yellow shirt with the Trotters Independent Traders logo on it, and - to my utter delight - because I was sitting in the second row, the guy playing Del Boy (Tom Bennett - who also popped up in Red Dwarf a couple of years ago) spotted me. There was a bit during the opening number where Del addresses the audience, trying to sell us hooky gear. I can't remember the exact wording, but there was a bit where he was trying to flog some "leaning Eiffel Tower" miniatures. Rodney pointed out to him that the Eiffel Tower isn't leaning, to which he just smiled knowingly and said something along the lines of, "We know that-" pointing between himself and me "-but what can't speak can't lie." I really can't remember the actual wording, just the sentiment, but it was just great! I got to be in on a Del Boy scheme! 😂 But enough about me...
This headcanon is very sweet. Del has a heart of gold and has spent most of his life trying to look after people, so this totally fits with his character in my opinion. Denzil is also a friendly guy, and I can definitely see them being kind to Trigger when this happened, telling Boycie to shut his trap (gotta love Boycie, the git). I can actually already half see this scenario in my head. Have you seen Rock & Chips? If not, that was a mini prequel series for OFAH set in the '60s, about Del and Rodney's mum Joan. It's got Nicholas Lyndhurst in it as Freddie The Frog, while a young Del Boy is played by James Buckley. It features Del and all his mates in their teenage years. Unfortunately, John Sullivan died just before the third one aired. The story felt unfinished to me. We will never know what Joan Trotter truly said on her death bed!

Me and My Gal (Raoul Walsh, 1932)
Usually i'm all for pre-code fast and loose sloppiness but another second spent with that drunk character and violence against violence let the round ups begin. Maybe it's to match the viewing experience to Spencer Tracey's life as a police officer: half spent managing, half slapdashly solving crimes, half falling in love. Other than some at times real good photography and editing, there's not much to this other than he and Joan Bennett's interactions. Pin a movie on a star. Remember when you could get away with that?

Six Plays by Alan Bennett: Doris and Doreen (1.2, LWT, 1978)
"I still wonder about Mrs. Henstridge. She did have a daughter, doesn't she? She was in an accident. Or did she get married? I know the hat came round."
"They wouldn't send the hat round for a daughter, her daughter never worked here."
"They send the hat round for famine victims, and they don't work here."
"They send the hat round for all sorts these days. I hope they send the hat round for me when my time comes. If it isn't a wedding, it's a famine. Earthquakes practically twice a week these days. Never stops. Ethiopia, what have we got to do with Ethiopia?"
"I just have this feeling I chipped in for a spread."
#doris and doreen#six plays by alan bennett#alan bennett#single play#1978#lwt#classic tv#stephen frears#prunella scales#patricia routledge#pete postlethwaite#joan sanderson#george fenton#tony wharmby#this second play in the series is much more traditionally theatrical than the first; essentially a two hander confined to a single studio#set‚ the action concerns the titular characters played by Scales and Routledge‚ mid level filing clerks in an unspecified national company‚#who spend their days reading newspapers and making passive aggressive digs at one another rather than work on the forms they so abhor#it's a character piece‚ with sparkling dialogue brought beautifully to life by two actors that Bennett would work with on stage and screen#repeatedly (Routledge in particular became a familiar collaborator and was an intrinsic part of what made Talking Heads so successful)#Doris is a vaguely bitter single woman who cares for an ailing mother while Doreen is a comic grotesque‚ a vapid married woman who chatters#incessantly about forced rhubarb and the lives and loves of colleagues she barely knows; for all that‚ the two are very similar in some#aspects of disposition‚ particularly in their middle class snobbery and their disinterested attitude to their work. the looming spectre of#a potential interloper in the form of a new boss (part of dreaded staff shake ups) is treated with near gothic levels of horror and#paranoia (with the film really leaning into those visuals for the rather hysteria tinged ending). it's a note of elevated style that's both#clever and quite witty but i still think this works best when it's quietly deconstructing these two frustrated characters as inflated#clerks with delusions of importance. endlessly tripping off long monologues about particular paperwork or obsolete filing systems#or sniping among themselves about best practices and working to rule; underneath the breezy comedy there's very little sympathy or#compassion in Bennett's piece (even the late Pete Postlethwaite's union minded ancillary worker is depicted as a crude bore and a hypocrite#undeniably a funny play and as sharply written as any of the playwrights works‚ but it lacks the heart that furnishes his best scripts#also the score is weirdly obtrusive whenever it kicks in‚ often playing over lines of dialogue as tho poorly mixed in

ok ill bite. what is this lesbian prison show about and where can i watch it
the show is wentworth (it’s also the name of the prison these women are in and the prison/show is set in australia) and it starts with this woman named bea who tried to murder her husband (who was an abusive piece of shit + a rapist) and the show mainly centers around her for the first few seasons. the main characters really differ depending on the season but the most consistent cast of main characters is bea smith (s1-s4), franky doyle (s1-s6ish) (another inmate at the prison), vera bennett (s1-s8) (dare i say she’s the real main character of this show bc.. i feel like she’s the character we know the most about outside of her job in the prison), joan ferguson (s2-s5) (s8) (i may be biased bc i adore pam but probably one of the most fascinating characters in the whole show), boomer jenkins (s1-s8) (one of the only consistent “main characters” along with vera, will, and linda), will jackson (s1-s8) (i don’t like him but he just works in the prison), allie novak (s4-s8) (another inmate who later has a relationship with bea and various other women in the prison), linda miles (s1-s8) (a background character but if you look at the cell block h wiki, the backstory the actress playing linda (jacquie brennan) came up with is super interesting to me), jake stewart (s4-s8) (again i don’t like him he just works in the prison that’s all i’m gonna say), kaz proctor (s3-s7) (one of my personal favourites besides joan and vera, an absolutely heartbreaking character though) doreen anderson (s1-s5) (not gonna lie, her characters annoying but i think shareena clanton is a brilliant woman nonetheless and obviously had no control over the character im assuming), marie winter (s6-s8) (allie’s ex girlfriend, she’s absolutely diabolical (dare i say worse than joan?) but susie porter plays her SO well), liz birdsworth (s1-s7) (an older woman in the prison who’s the prison mother basically. think of red from oitnb but not russian, working in the kitchen, and being a bit harsh), and bridget westfall (s3-s6) (she’s the prisons psychologist + later on frankys girlfriend). you can stream it on netflix in the us and australia (probably other places too but i haven’t looked too far into it LOL) or these sites here (has a lot of pop ups but it plays in good quality eventually) and here. also fair warning, if you do watch wentworth, s4e03 contains a graphic and quite unnecessary rape scene, and brings up mentions of said scene and episode or two after the fact. but anyways, if you watched and enjoyed oitnb, you’ll most likely like this show way more, speaking as someone who’s watched both multiple times, but if you watch it pls tell me your thought on it <3 i love hearing what people have to say about things i like!!

LUCY & THE JOANS!
Lucille Ball’s Collabs with Women Named Joan
Tumblr media
A remarkable number of talented women named Joan - and even a few memorable characters - were part of the Lucyverse.
Tumblr media
JOAN BANKS (1918-1989)
Joan Banks’ only credit with Lucille Ball was in “Fan Magazine Interview” (1954) in which she played reporter Eleanor Harris, assigned to do a story on Ricky Ricardo’s wife aka Lucy Ricardo. Here character name was a tribute to real-life writer Eleanor Harris.
Tumblr media
JOAN BLONDELL (1906-1979)
Joan Blondell (sister of Gloria Blondell) was active as a performer concurrently with Lucille Ball. On “The Lucy Show,” she played Joan Brenner, a character intended to fill the gap after the departure of Vivian Vance. But she did not get along with Lucille Ball, and after a shouting match in front of the studio audience, Blondell was dismissed after just two episodes.

JOAN CRAWFORD (1905-1977)
Joan Crawford was born Lucille Fay LeSueur. The Oscar-winning actress was mentioned on several episodes of “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show” before making a guest appearance in “Lucy and the Lost Star” in 1968. The episode was originally intended for Gloria Swanson, hence the non-specific title. The title “Lucy and Joan” had already been used when Joan Bennet guest-starred.  As with Bennett there was off-stage friction between Crawford and Ball.

"I MARRIED JOAN” starring JOAN DAVIS
From 1952 to 1955 Joan Davis (1912-1961) starred in the sitcom “I Married Joan,” which was NBC’s answer to the popularity of “I Love Lucy.”  Comic actress Davis had appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1933 film Bunker Bean. Like Lucy, Davis used her own first name and was a scatterbrained housewife. Her husband (Jim Backus) was a judge. Both shows featured Mary Jane Croft, Bobby Jellison, Shirley Mitchell, Sandra Gould, Margie Liszt, Jerry Hausner, Elvia Allman, Myra Marsh, Phil Arnold, Dick Elliott, Robert Foulk, Joseph Kearns, Maxine Semon, Don Brodie, Hal March, Richard Reeves, Herb Vigran, Norman Varden, Harry Bartell, Kay Wiley, Charlotte Lawrence, Frank Nelson, Frank Gerstle, Vivvi Janis, George Neise, Ross Elliott, Verna Felton, Fritz Feld, Mabel Paige, Rolfe Sedan, Paul Dubov, Maurice Marsac, Peter Leeds, Shepard Menken, Strother Martin, Junie Ellis, Florence Bates, Sam Hearn, Mary Treen, and Hans Moebus. Like Lucille Ball, Joan Davis also served as Executive Producer of her series, which, like “I Love Lucy,” was filmed at General Service Studios.

Topper Returns (Roy Del Ruth, 1941)
Cast: Joan Blondell, Roland Young, Carole Landis, Billie Burke, Dennis O’Keefe, Patsy Kelly, H.B. Warner, Eddie Anderson, George Zucco, Donald MacBride, Rafaela Ottiano, Trevor Bardette. Screenplay: Jonathan Latimer, Gordon Douglas, Paul Gerard Smith, based on characters created by Thorne Smith. Cinematography: Norbert Brodine. Art direction: Nicolai Remisoff. Film editing: James E. Newcom. Music: Werner R. Heymann.
Topper Returns doesn't have much in common with either the original Topper (Norman Z. McLeod, 1937), about a stuffy banker beset by sexy ghosts, other than Roland Young as Topper and Billie Burke as his fluttery, suspicious wife who mistakes his odd behavior for infidelity when the ghosts start teasing him. Cary Grant and Constance Bennett were the mischievous ghosts in that film, but Grant jumped ship before the first sequel, Topper Takes a Trip (McLeod, 1938), after which Bennett bailed out too. This time the sexy ghost is Joan Blondell, whose character, Gail Richards, is murdered by mistake: The intended victim was her friend, Ann Carrington (Carole Landis), heir to a large fortune. Once she passes over, the ectoplasmic Gail enlists Topper, of all people, in helping solve her murder. Young is, as always, a delight -- one of the best comic actors of ‘30s and early ‘40s Hollywood -- but he doesn't have a lot to do this time except be shoved around by the invisible Gail as they search for clues in the creepy mansion where she was murdered. Mrs. Topper shows up, too, accompanied by her maid (Patsy Kelly) and the chauffeur, played by Eddie Anderson, billed as Eddie "Rochester" Anderson because of his fame as the eponymous chauffeur on Jack Benny's radio show. Even though he's called "Eddie" by Topper and "Edward" by Mrs. Topper, he manages to slip in a line about how he wants his old job with Mr. Benny back. Although Anderson is given some stereotypical moments predicated on the old gag that Black people are afraid of ghosts, and there's a tedious slapstick bit involving a sea lion (oh, don't ask), he's treated as more of a comic equal in the film than Black actors usually were, matching wisecrack for wisecrack. There are also some funny moments with Donald MacBride as a particularly addled police detective. The whole thing is laced through with topical gags that have lost their edge: Rafaela Ottiano plays a sinister housekeeper modeled on Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca (Alfred Hitchcock, 1940), and if you don't get the joke immediately be sure that someone will refer to her as "Rebecca," even though her character's name is Lillian. The movie is also a reminder of how pervasive radio once was in popular culture: In addition to Anderson's reference to Jack Benny, there are also quips about Orson Welles's "War of the Worlds" broadcast, and a radio giveaway show called "Pot o' Gold" in which people won the jackpot if they answered their randomly dialed telephone.
