Dean’s Self Acceptance & Chekhov's Grenade Launcher

If you aren’t here for a deeper look at episode 12x22, metaphors, and Dean being bi, keep scrolling because we’re going to get into that holy hand grenade - Supernatural’s Grenade Launcher, the weapon that Dean has loved since season one but always got shamed out of using; shamed out of using UNTIL 12x22; an episode literally titled, ‘Who We Are’.

After which Dean loses Castiel and goes into the Widower arc ... ok. ... Cool. I’ll just read nothing into any of that shall I?

Okay first- ‘what grenade launcher? I don’t remember a grenade launcher?’

Dean has a grenade launcher in the trunk that we’ve never seen him use. It's been there at least since episode 1x02. He has assigned a gender to the grenade launcher, calling it ‘she’ like his car. It has appeared multiple times, but one noteworthy time was two episodes ago when Dean was showing his arsenal to Max Barnes, the openly gay witch hunter, in 12x20. Mmmhmm, nothing to see there. Nothing about the slow progression of Dean learning to accept himself. Nothing about Dean opening his trunk up to a canonically gay man.

Dean often wants to use it her, but it’s she’s impractical, it’s she’s not stealthy. The thing is unsafe, and other characters are constantly telling him no, put it back, don’t bring it, don’t use it. (See 12x05)

When Dean lost his memory - when he would have seen no reason NOT to use it, one of the other characters reminded him with a post-it note: this thing that you want to do, that’s a natural instinct for you, don’t do it. (See 12x11)

Okay, now that we have a bit of primer - let’s talk about 12x22. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode.

Mary has been brainwashed and the boys have been locked in the bunker to die. After trying magic and pickaxes (shout out to “goggles? goggles.”), Dean realizes it is time. Time to tear down his big concrete wall with something, "Big, Beautiful, and Dumb" regardless of what the British lady in the bunker says, and he's getting no more resistance from Sam.

"I have had this thing for so long, I have been waiting for the *perfect* moment to use this."

We've been seeing the grenade launcher for 12 seasons, and in how many episodes and they just happen to have Dean finally use it to break OUT by breaking DOWN walls in an episode titled ‘WHO WE ARE’?!

Having torn down that wall with the grenade launcher, it becomes time to deal with other, less physical ones. There are British Men of Letters to fight, Mary is still brainwashed, and there is no magical shortcut that is going to cut through. In a display of how far the characters have come, Sam is becoming a leader in a fight he originally wanted no part in [which the show will drop over and over for no reason] and Dean, well this one’s about Dean for me.

Dean fucked up his leg coming out ... of the bunker, I mean. Finally using the grenade launcher, it hurt, but it didn’t kill him. An earlier Dean would have joined the fight at the men of letters compound anyway, prepared to die in a blaze of glory. However, Dean has changed. Instead he recognizes that going into a fight right now would be idiotic and he stays behind to fight with EMOTIONS instead of brawn. It’s okay to Dean, and even his idea, to not go into the ‘manly’ fight. Dean has become secure in himself enough to volunteer to go into the battle that requires being open and honest about feelings. He initiates the hug and feelings talk with Sam, (only undercutting a lil with a classic 'bitch' 'jerk' call response). No chick flick moments indeed.

So Dean and Sam hug, Sam promises Dean he’ll come back, and we move on to the most important scene in the episode. Dean has broken through mind control with feelings before, with Cas in season 8 episode 17 when we had the infamous ‘We need you. I need you’ moment (though apparently Jensen Dean was still guarded enough that this was not an ‘I love you’.) but this time Dean goes into Mary’s psyche; Mary who has been a stand in all season for who Dean was emotionally before his character growth.

The viewer is expecting some big declaration of love, that’s how dean broke through last time. But no. That’s not what we get.

Dean finally lets out his true feelings. About his childhood. About John. About Mary’s death. About everything that has ever happened to Sam. The walls are coming down. Dean is honest with someone about the resentment he feels (which should be directed at John) about the responsibility that was put on him as a child. In sharp contrast to his reaction to Mary’s guilt at the beginning of the season, of Dean as the perpetual caretaker, now Dean gets to acknowledge his own feelings, that he does blame Mary and her deal for what they went through. Watch this scene. He hates her and he loves her. okay.

Yes, Dean got to use the grenade launcher, but it wasn’t in a climax of some epic battle. It was in the ramp up - the beginning of an episode.

No, the climax of the episode was Dean comin to terms with feelings the character has had since season one. We’ve been looking at this grenade launcher for 12 years, but we’ve been witnessing Dean’s feelings here for just as long & Dean takes his emotional predecessor, Mary, along with him.

I will skip past the fight scene between him and ketch - which is actually impressive given the horse tranquilizer he’d been given. Instead, I want to get to 12x23, to his reunion with Castiel.

Dean has used the grenade launcher. Dean has accepted himself and admitted something to himself that you can’t even really see until you look back at this episode’s placement retrospectively. Dean is no longer trying to fight with Castiel, he just wants to help him. Castiel heals Dean’s major knee injury and Dean, well we get an interesting jacting joice:

in fact, the moment continues with a lil half smile and Dean looking down and checking his knee, I’m just having trouble getting a gif or a video to make one from. Throughout the entire episode Cas routinely addresses Dean specifically despite being in a group at all times. Cas later makes a run at Lucifer and Sam wrestles a yelling concerned Dean away and back through the rift, just as Dean wrestled him away from Jess in the pilot.

At the end of this episode Cas is killed in front of Dean, who for the first time doesn't continue on in the fight, instead dropping to his knees. This all flows right into Dean’s intense season 13 widower arc. Dean feels Cas’s death in a way we have never seen him grieve before.

It gets another use later in the series in the same episode where Dean also wears a live action version of the pink sleeping gown he wore in scoobynatural, but we’ll get to that later.

everyone’s a critic, teen, ~100k, this was the first long spn fic I read pretty much as soon as cas showed up, back when I was only reading aus to avoid spoilers. To be honest I didn’t really know anything abt cas then so even though I’ve read it twice how good the cas characterization in there is kinda a blur, but I am such a big fan of chef dean i want to give him a hug. I appreciate the lack of explicit smut here too it cuts away very tastefully.

under the midnight sun, explicit, ~230k, this is the longest fic I’ve ever successfully finished reading, I read it over the span of 2 days and I’m obsessed. ao3 user northernsparrow has an ornithology degree and uses it to write gay angel fanfiction. this is an ~au~ but cas is still an angel and it’s so well researched (from op’s real experience) that it really makes you feel like you’re on an arctic research station.

like moses and batman and james dean , explicit, ~30k, this is a personal favorite of mine (I mean, obviously, it’s on this list), warning for underage prostitution, this is such a good dean studies fic

Part of You. Spencer Reid X OC! Character. Chapter 14.

Chapter 14: Diana

Summary: Bridgett finally meets Diana. Based off the episode “Surface Tension” (12x11).

TW: Mentions of Schizophrenia, Dementia, and Alzheimer's. Talk of Diana hitting Spencer, mentions of medication, sad Spencer.

A.N.: This is season 12 Spencer. Italicized words are a flashback.

“We talked about this, I think we should just wait a little bit longer. She’s already going through a lot of changes.” Spencer says, looking up at Bridgett.

Bridgett sighs and hops on top of Spencer’s desk, which she knew annoyed him, but both of them knew he wasn’t going to say anything to her.

“Babe, at some point I’m going to have to meet her. Are you just going to hide me away forever?”

“Not forever… just for a while. Maybe in a few months when I can get her settled I can think about it.”

“Okay, okay. But I am going to miss being able to have our sleepovers.” Bridgett exaggerates her pout and leans down to kiss him.

“Sorry to interrupt, but I heard there was a stranger here visiting.” JJ jokes.

The couple pulls back, Bridgett’s face immediately growing hot at getting caught kissing Spencer. Spencer gets up and goes over to hug JJ and finally meet Steven Walker.

It had been a few weeks since Spencer had been at work, he had been in Houston with his mom at the new care facility she had been moved to for a clinical trial. Both of them thought things were going really well for the first few weeks she was there and Spencer called to check on her, but then every few days he would get a call that something happened.

“Yeah a nap sounds like a good idea.” Spencer says over the phone, running his hand through his hair. “I-I love you too. Bye, mom.” He lets out a sigh as he hands up the phone.

Bridgett stays quiet as she shuts the door to Spencer’s apartment . He looks up from his desk, giving her a half smile.

“Hey. I didn’t hear you come in.” He mumbles.

“I heard you on the phone, I didn’t want to interrupt. Is your mom okay?” Bridgett questions, putting her overnight bag on his couch and walking over to his desk.

“She didn’t know where she was. She thought that one of her friends from the home in Nevada had been kidnapped and she wanted us to investigate.” He looked so sad as he spoke. “I think she’s getting a placebo. I don’t think she has the medication.”

“But she was doing better?”

“I just thought she was doing better. Maybe I just wanted to believe that she was getting better because I don’t want to see her suffer anymore.” Spencer says somberly, leaning back in his chair.

“Baby,” Bridgett says sadly, cupping Spencer’s cheek in her hand, rubbing his cheek with her thumb. “Maybe it’s going to take time for the medication to work.”

“Since last week I’ve been thinking about going to Houston and bringing her to live here, that way I can take care of her.”

“I mean this in the most loving way possible, but do you think that’s a good idea?”

“Why not? I took care of her by myself when I was a kid and my dad walked out on us.”

“I know, but Spence, you don’t work a regular 9-5 job, we’re gone all the time, for days, even weeks. Do you think she’s going to be okay by herself all that time?”

“I’m going to hire a care nurse to help out when we’re gone. I just… I want her close.”

“Well maybe I can help out too when we are home, that way you don’t have to do it alone.”

“Well my mom doesn’t know you, she might not be that… welcoming.” Spencer rolls his chair back and starts to walk away toward his kitchen, Bridgett following right behind him.

“Spence, don’t you think at some point I’m going to have to meet her? Especially if I have your children and marry you, spend the rest of my life with you?”

“Yes at some point. Just not this point.” Spencer snaps, instantly regretting it once he turns around to look at Bridgett. She tenses her jaw, glaring at him.

“I get that you’re stressed out, and I’m sorry, but you don’t have to be a dick to me.” Bridgett snaps back, walking out of the room and into his bedroom, slamming the door shut.

Spencer let her cool off by herself for a few minutes, he knew he was the one that was in the wrong and he would have some serious apologizing to do. He didn’t mean to yell at her, Bridgett was right, he was stressed out… and again she was right, it was no excuse to yell at her. Just as Spencer gets up from his couch the door to his bedroom opens, Bridgett walking out slowly.

“I’m sorry.” She says in a small voice, leaning her back against the doorframe.

“Why are you sorry? You have nothing to be sorry about, Bridge. In fact. I'm the one that’s sorry.”

Bridgett walks over to the couch, sitting next to Spencer.

“You’re right.. I-I am stressed out. I want my mom to get better… but I know she’s not goi…” Spencer’s voice trails off, sighing and leaning his head back on the couch.

“You know she’s not going to get better?” Bridgett asks, finishing his thought.

Spencer looks at her, hesitant to confirm her statement. “I’ve done so much research on possible medications she can take to help with her Schizophrenia… but the dementia throws a wrench in the plan.”

“Baby, I know it’s hard to see your mom go through such hard times, especially when you can’t just drive and see her. Whatever you feel is right, you should do, and I’ll back you 100%.”

“Thank you, Bridge. Do you forgive me for yelling at you?”

Bridgett nods her head, bringing Spencer into her chest and hugging him.

Spencer’s phone rings from his desk, Bridgett handing it to him.

“Dr. Reid...What? Just stay there, I'm on my way.” Spencer hangs up, grabbing his satchel and notebook.

“What’s wrong?” Bridgett asks, hopping off his desk.

“Uhh, a water pipe burst in my apartment. I gotta go.” He stumbles over his words, not making eye contact with Bridgett.

He’s lying.

“What was that about?” Emily calls out from behind.

“Spence is having plumbing trouble at his apartment.” Stephen replies.

“Oh no, poor Spence.” Emily says.

Bridgett hurries up the stairs to Emily, pulling her into her office. “Do you think I can stay back? Help Spence out? I don’t think it was plumbing trouble. His mom is living with him at his apartment right now and I think something happened.”

“She’s here? What happened to Houston?”

“You know the clinical trial for the medication to help her Alzheimer’s? Spencer didn’t think it was working so he went to Houston to bring her back here.”

Emily sighs, scratching the back of her head. “Yeah, that’s a good idea. But stay near your phone, okay? I might need you to come back to the office.”

“You got it. Thank you, Em.”

Bridgett pulls up to the parking spot next to Spencer, meeting him as he was getting out of the car. He drove like an old man, Bridgett not so much.

“What are you doing here?” Spencer asks, walking up to Bridgett.

“Emily let me come help you out since you were having ‘plumbing issues’.” Bridgett air quotes. “What happened, really?”

Spencer sighs, kicking at the road below him. “I’m not 100 percent sure. Her caretaker just said something happened and the apartment was flooded and my mom was upset.”

“Let’s go check.”

“I don’t know if it’s a good idea.” Spencer starts.

“Spencer please. I want to help you.” Bridgett rolls her eyes, over him trying to prolong the inevitable meeting.

“Okay… you’re right.”

They walk up to Spencer’s apartment, he unlocks the door to a sea of water covering Spencer’s floor.

“Oh my god.” Bridgett gasps, carefully stepping in behind Spencer. “Go check on your mom. I’ll start trying to soak some of this water up.” Bridgett heads off to the kitchen, grabbing all the towels that Spencer owns, which really wasn’t a lot.

“What are you talking about? You can’t leave, you signed a contract!” Spencer yells from the other room.

Bridgett sticks her head out of the kitchen, watching as the woman yelled back at Spencer. “And it wasn’t in my contract to have a crazy woman threaten my life! She did this on purpose.” She spits.

“Hey! I’m sure your boss wouldn’t be happy with finding out that you’re calling your patients ‘crazy’. It is part of your job description to deal with whatever they have going on.” Bridgett spits back, walking up to the nurse, staring her down.

The lady looks between Spencer and Bridgett before grabbing her coat and ripping the door open.

“Is she gone?” Spencer’s mom comes running out of Spencer’s room toward the front door.

“Mom, what did you say to her?!”

“She was trying to get information! She was asking me questions.” She yells, shutting the door.

“Of course she is, that’s what she’s supposed to do.”

“That’s why I told you to be careful about who you bring in this house… there are spies everywhere.”

“She’s not a spy! She was here to help you!”

Spencer’s mom shushes him, walking toward him. “She could still be out there.”

Bridgett could see that Spencer was visibly growing agitated with his mom, while his mom was hyperventilating.

“Promise me that you won’t let her back in. Please don’t let her back in.”

“I promise you she’s not ever coming back because she walked out!” He yells.

“Spence, stop.” Bridgett interjects from the side.

Spencer’s mom jumps hearing a new voice, looking over to Bridgett.

“Who are you?! Why are you here?”

“I’m sorry, I’m a friend of Spencer’s, I work with him. My name is Bridgett. He needed some help cleaning up the water.” Bridgett says, putting her hand out, offering it to his mom.

Spencer’s mom stares at Bridgett, slowly putting her hand out to shake it. “Are you going to ask me questions?”

“No ma’am. Not if you don’t want me to.”

“Mom, why don’t you go lay down? Get some rest.” Spencer says, holding his mom’s hand.

“Okay. Yeah, I should go lay down. I want some water.”

“I can get you some. Be right back.” Bridgett says, turning and walking back into the kitchen.

“I can be back there in 20. I’ll call you when I get there. Okay, bye.” Bridgett hangs up the phone, slipping it into her back pocket. Bridgett walks back into Spencer’s living room, spotting him with his back turned, putting some books back upon the shelves.

“Hey, Emily called me, she needs me to run back to the office and help Garcia out tracking down information for the case. I’ll probably be a few hours.” Bridgett says, softly scratching his back with her nails.

“Okay. I have another nurse coming by any minute to talk to my mom and I about her coming to care for her.”

“Sounds good. And on my way back I’ll stop by the grocery store and pick some stuff up for dinner.”

“You’re going to make dinner for the three of us?”

“Yeah, when my nana was having bad days with her Alzheimer’s, my Tia would make her favorite meal to help comfort her. I don’t know your mom’s favorite meal, but I figured you would.”

Spencer beams at his girlfriend, pulling her in tight with his arm. “I love you.” He says, giving her two kisses on the lips.

Bridgett smiles back at him, giving him a small peck on his nose. “I love you too. I’ll be back soon. Text me what your mom wants okay?”

Just as Bridgett turns around she sees Spencer’s mom standing in the doorway of his room.

“Oh, Ms. Reid, I’m sorry.” Bridgett apologizes, embarrassed that she might have just seen her kissing her son.

“I heard you talking about dinner.”

“Yes, ma’am. I was going to make dinner when I came back later on in the evening.”

“I like Chicken Parmesan. I used to make it for Spencer when he was a kid, a lot.”

“Perfect. I have to head out for a little bit, but Spencer is staying here, and I’ll be back to make you some dinner.” Bridgett smiles, grabbing her bag and walking out.

“She’s your girlfriend?” Diana asks, hiding a smirk on her face.

“Yeah, she’s my girlfriend.” Spencer nods, smiling at his mom.

“She’s pretty. I like her.”

Bridgett puts the plastic bags on the floor to find the keys in her messy purse, would it have been easier to just have the keys in hand after she got out of the car? Yeah, but Bridgett never made things easy.

Once she fishes them out of her bag she unlocks the door, pushing it open with her hip and shuffling in with all of her stuff.

“Spence?” Bridgett calls out, heading straight for the kitchen and putting the bags down on his counter. She walks out to see Spencer sitting at his desk, he half smiles at Bridgett. “What’s wrong, babe?”

Spencer sighs, tapping his fingers on the desktop. “My mom had a bad episode.”

Bridgett rests against his desk, spotting a bruise forming on his cheek. “What is that?” She questions, running her pointer finger over the reddish, purple mark on his face.

Spencer stays quiet, avoiding eye contact with Bridgett.

“Di-did your mom do that to you?” She gasps.

He quickly looks over at Bridgett, nodding his head. “She was angry with me because I caught her trying to flush her medicine down the toilet.”

“She tried flushing it? I thought you kept her bottles out here with you?”

“She uhh, she swiped them off my desk when I was busy.”

She knew he was lying again, but she didn’t want to call him out on it right now.

“Spence… are you sure that having your mom live with you is the best idea? Do you think you can handle it?”

“Yeah i think I can handle it. Plus the nurse I met with agreed to take care of her while I’m gone.”

“That’s great. I’m glad she won’t be alone while we’re gone…. But are you sure you’re okay?”

The door opens behind them, Diana walking out. “That nap is just what I needed. Oh, you’re one of Spencer’s coworkers, umm, Bianca?”

“Bridgett, ma’am. Nice to see you again.”

“You’re very pretty. Spencer, isn’t she pretty?”

Bridgett beams at Spencer, giggling and waiting for him to answer.

“Yeah, she’s very pretty, mom.” Spencer smiles, running his thumb over her knuckles.

“Oh honey, what happened?” Diana asks, lightly touching the bruise on his face.

“I… I bumped into the wall. No big deal.”

“You know, when you were little you were always bumping into stuff, I would call you ‘Crash’.” She smiles, walking away with her book.

Bridgett pieces the words together in her mind, her eyes flickering to Spencer, furrowing her eyebrows. Spencer adverts his eyes, looking down at the paperwork on the table.

It was for sure going to be a conversation later.

“Sweetheart, why don’t you come look through this with me?” Diana says, turning her head to look back at Bridgett.

Bridgett gets up with a smile and plops on the couch next to her, seeing all the pages filled with old photos of Diana when she was growing up.

“What’s this?” Diana asks, flipping to a page in her scrapbook, showing the page to Bridgett.

Bridgett looks over at the page, half a ticket stub taped against the paper.

“A ticket stub.”

“What is that?”

“When you go to the movies or a concert, you need a ticket stub to get in.” Spencer says, sitting on the arm of the couch next to Bridgett.

Diana flips the page a flyer for Elvis in concert on the page. “You saw Elvis?” Spencer asks.

“I… I don’t know.”

They spent a few more minutes going though the book with Diana, helping her out with what she had questions with. She even told a cute little story of when Spencer was little and he wanted to be a tightrope walker, which made Spencer slightly embarrassed that Bridgett heard the story.

Bridgett turns the sink off, grabbing a dry hand towel from the drawer and begins to dry off the large pan that she used to cook the noodles in. She can feel someone behind her, making her turn around to see Spencer.

“What’s wrong? You look upset.”

“My mom… she didn’t know who I was.”

Bridgett puts the pan down on the counter, immediately pulling him in for a hug. He drops his head to rest on her shoulder, trying not to get upset in front of her, but as she rocked him side to side and rubbed his back the knot in his throat got harder to choke back.

“I’m sorry, baby. I know this is so hard for you.”

Spencer lifts his head up, wiping his eyes clear of any tears. “I want you to be honest with me. And I mean honest, no ‘whatever you think is best’ type thing, okay?”

Bridgett nods her head, holding his hand for comfort.

“Do you think I’m making a mistake by having my mom live with me here?”

Bridgett sighs, “The only reason I say yes is because of the fact we’re always gone. If you had more consistent hours and days you were at home, then I think it’s a good decision. But I know you aren’t willing to give up working with the team, so that’s the only reason I think it’s not the best decision.”

“I just… I don’t want to lose out on time I have left with her. What if I only have another year left with her? I left her when I was 18, I had her committed, I saw her maybe once a year once I was in training for the FBI… I feel like I wasted time with her.”

“You didn’t waste time with her. You were doing the best thing for both you and her. Look at how well she was doing for so long in Nevada. It was all the change with moving facilities, and she’s getting older, her mind is going to start going each day regardless if she has medication or not. It’s about making her as happy as she can be until it’s her time.” Bridgett gives him another hug, letting him cry into her shoulder.

“I better go. It’s getting late.” Bridgett says, combing through Spencer’s hair with her nails.

He looks up to her with sleep in his eyes, his head flat in her lap. “No, stay.”

Bridgett laughs, stroking his cheek. “Where do you expect me to sleep? On top of you? You’ll die.”

Spencer turns onto his side, hugging one of her thighs. “You’ve been on top of me before and I didn’t die. It was quite nice actually, I remember enjoying it.”

Bridgett’s mouth hangs open, a laugh of disbelief coming from her at his comment. “Bad boy!” She jokes, playfully hitting his shoulder.

Spencer laughs in return, pleased with himself and his sexual joke, usually Bridgett was the one who made the dirty comments. “I’m serious though, just sleep here. We’ve both fallen asleep on the couch before. I sort of don’t want to be alone through the night.”

“Okay, baby. I won’t go anywhere. I just gotta adjust myself. I can’t sleep like this.” Bridgett says.

Spencer gets up, watching her lay on her back, throwing two pillows behind her head. He settles his lanky body between her legs, resting his head just below her chest, wrapping his arms around her waist. Her hands find his hair again, playing with his wild curls.

“I love you.” Bridgett says, massaging his scalp with the tips of her fingers.

Spencer hums a little, “I love you more.”

First of all let me say there are a lot of amazing fic recs going around right now (this one has amazing fics, most of which I have read, so I recommend all of these)

Since you didn’t specify what you were looking for, I will just list some of my favorites, going through my bookmarks. These are old and new fics alike in no particular order.

Anything by @violue is definitely on my recommended. One fic that is special in my heart (no pun intended) is The Unwavering Heart of a Winchester.

86k, AU - Sam dies and Dean wants to meet all the people who received Sam’s organs to make sure they are good people. Angst ahead, as Dean is understandably depressed, but a lot of funny moments and perfect characterization of all characters who appear.

If These Rooms Have Memories by @cuddlemonsterdean. Again, I recommend just about all of their writing, it is absolutely beautiful, but specifically is a fic I go back to a lot.

12k, canon divergent - An alternative fic to ep. 12x11 - Regarding Dean. REALLY ANGSTY beware, beautifully written from Dean’s perspective, which shows him slowly losing more and more of himself, but with a happy end (as goes for all angsty fics I recommend). Not destiel, but Cas is there.

Noveltea & Coffee by @rustling-pages.

50k, coffee shop/magical realism au - Dean owns a coffee shop as an empath and Cas can use magic, but only if it doesn’t benefit himself. Beautiful story with a lot of flustered!dean and amazing world building. Sweet and filled with misunderstandings. This story made me laugh out loud and also cry, so it has everything. (P.S.: a shout out to A Love Of All Things That Grow which makes me cry every time I read it, it’s so beautiful, but hurts so bad - with a happy ending of course)

A Crash Course in Computer Safety by @debatchery

85k, nbc Chuck au (no knowledge of Chuck required, I didn’t watch it) - Blew my mind. This is seriously so good and wild with incredible action sequences and funny moments and it just feels like you’re watching a movie in your head. Essentially Dean gets super secret pictures uploaded into his brain and now every secret agency and criminal wants to get at him and Cas is a (spoiler, but not really) CIA agent, posing as his possible love interest to protect him.

The Dean Winchester Beat Sheet by saltyfeathers (couldn’t find a tumblr, sorry)

144k, college au - The characterization in this is amazing. Just well rounded characters all around and sometimes you want to just gently smack Dean’s head with a big wooden pole because of how dense he is. Takes place in Dean and Cas’s senior year in college, Cas being a new student. Hate to love but only on Dean’s side. Dean is gay in this one so there is a whole self discovery and acceptance journey in this one. All around stellar fic for a good time.

Stand By Me by @whelvenwings. I could recommend so many fics by them, and if you haven’t had the chance, check out all of them, because their writing is incredible. I have been reading their stuff for 5 years now and it never gets old. This fic though, this one is extra special

31k, zombie apocalypse au - written in an incredibly deep, poetic way where Dean and Cas, who have both been alone for a very long time, meet each other in an apocalypse world. This is story is something you feel deep inside of you and brings every aspect of the zombie apocalypse genre that hits hard.

This has probably been recommend multiple times, but this is my fic rec and nobody can stop me: A Priori by @whelvenwings & @thebloggerbloggerfun

282k, HP au, WIP - Listen. Very closely. I want you to come over here so you can sit down and listen to me as I rave about this. I would never recommend a WIP if it wasn’t absolutely worth it. But this one. Oh boy where do I even begin. The way Dean and Cas are absolutely adorable little wizard boys? The fact that there are so many little moral lessons you experience through their little children brains? The mystery? The FRIENDSHIPS?? The betrayal?? A WALKING OWL NAMED GANDALF??? This has everything. If I could physically hold this story as a plush toy, I would. The writing is impeccable and I cannot wait to read more. (P.S. I super recommend all of @thebloggerbloggerfun‘s writing as well. Absolutely stellar and I especially love and give a shout out to Peak Homosexual and Obey His Word. And all of her other stuff as well because it’s all seriously very good and I couldn’t choose which one to rec, tbh)

Cuckoo And Nest by @cuddlebabies/komodobits. Known for 91W- which I also recommend if you are into historical au’s, it’s absolutely breathtaking.

10k, canonverse - Cas thinks dean wants him to leave, dean is a neat freak, but because he wants Cas to stay he has to accept Cas's messiness. A bit angsty but oh so so beautifully written

No Matter What - Dean Winchester x Reader

2K WRITER & READER CHALLENGE

Here it is, my fic for ‘Amanda’s 2K Write & Reader Challenge’ using the prompt “I see the way you look at me when you think I’m not looking”. This is the first piece of writing I have ever done for a challenge and I absolutely loved doing it.

A/N: Based lightly upon the episode ‘Regarding Dean’ (12x11). This episode utterly broke my heart so obviously had to use it for a sad(ish) fic.

Four hours. That is how long it has been since Dean left for food. The motel room lays in silence as I anxiously await his return. Sam retired to bed not too long ago, desperate for some rest, with the sweet promise of Dean’s safe homecoming as his departing words. Sitting in our bed, fully dressed and boots tied securely to my feet, I think of all the possible worst case scenarios. My mind running amok with fear at the absence of the man I love. Without Dean the room we have been sharing is cold, evident by the way the hairs on my arms stand on edge, goosebumps rising on my skin. Rolling the sleeves of his plaid shirt down over my hands, I try and compose myself.

Dean is a hunter, the best there is, and he can handle himself in a fight. If anything were to have happened to him, he’d be alright, he always was. With that sliver of hope in my mind and the knowledge that Dean knows his way around the supernatural, I start to relax slightly. Glancing at the alarm clock on the worn chest of drawers that shows the time as a few minutes past midnight, an involuntary yawn leaves my body. I try and fight the fatigue that has been weighing me down, but I know that the attempt will be futile. With the added stress and worry of Dean not coming back as expected, my body has become overridden with exhaustion. Leaning back into the softness of the pillows behind my back and the prospect of Dean returning safely back to us, I fall into a light slumber.

The repetitive sound of my name being called is what drags me from my sleep, a sleep plagued with terrible nightmares. Slowly opening my eyes to the silhouette of Sam in the doorway makes my body spring upwards from its resting position. A pain shoots through my neck, the realisation that I had in fact slept awkwardly, with my back propped against the wall, and a pillow haphazardly strewn sideways across the headboard. Rubbing at the sore area, I make eye contact with the younger Winchester before taking in his positive demeanour. In his hand, he clutches his phone, shaking it for emphasis when I direct my attention to it. Immediately I forget about the aches which radiate through me and sit upright.

“Sammy-“ Before I can get another word in, he interrupts me, easing my nerves, replacing them with relief.

“He’s alive.” His statement is accompanied by a chuckle of disbelief and a shake of his head. “He’s at Waldo’s. Leave in ten?”

“Make it five, Samuel.”

His laugh, so rarely heard, echoes as he leaves the room, walking across the balcony back to his own room. “Okay, five. And I’m driving.” Hearing his receding voice, I remove myself from the bed and make myself more presentable in preparation for Dean’s excuses.

Upon entering Waldo’s Waffles, both Sam and I, are met with the sight of Dean stuffing his face full of a combination of waffle, banana, blueberry and whipped cream. A lightness filled by heart at seeing him in one piece, no blood to be seen. But there was a shadow of doubt looming over everything, something was wrong. Dean’s blue jacket is caked in mud and dirt, his right sleeve completely covered in the stuff. His face is filthy, dirt embedded into the lines around his eyes and nose, scratches scattered across his cheeks. What had happened last night? I watch on as Sam approaches his brother, rattling a bottle of pills before throwing them into his awaiting hands. Surely this couldn’t be a hangover? It isn’t uncommon for Dean to drink, yet venturing out alone for a night of drinking and returning the next morning with a hangover? That is something he hasn’t done in years.

Eventually snapping out of my moment of thought, I walk over to where they both sit, Dean once again shoving food into his mouth. Noticing my presence, Dean perks up, a typical cheeky grin spreading across his face. He enthusiastically pulls out the vacant stool next to him, gesturing for me to take a seat. I can’t help but smile as he does so, especially when he places a kiss to my cheek. Sam has an expression of utter confusion on his face, glancing repetitively between the both of us. Shrugging my shoulders once Dean’s attention is once again directed at his waffles, supposing he did have a hangover, he wouldn’t normally be so cheerful.

Without looking in my general direction, Dean nudges a full plate of waffles topped with strawberries and an abundance of whipped cream towards me. A fork hangs between his middle and ring fingers, the platinum band that is placed on the latter of the two, shines under the fluorescent lighting. It is still an amazement that it hasn’t gotten scratched or required cutting off from his finger. Before we were married, the discussion of the ring was paramount, but Dean was set on wearing one. His reasoning being that without one it wouldn’t feel true. At his words my heart had fluttered in my chest and continues to do so every time I catch a glimpse of the precious metal on his hand. I take the fork, twirling between my own fingers, watching the rings on my own finger as I do so.

Both brothers delve into conversation about the current case we have been working as I tuck into the waffles that sit before me. Considering I haven’t eaten since before Dean’s disappearance last night, I suddenly find myself starving. Each bite an overwhelming sensation of sweetness and sugar. Every now and again, Dean switches his gaze to me, a soft smile on his lips as he observes me enjoying the food. I listen intently to the boys and the more I do, the more my appetite decreases, worry and concern settles in, sending a shiver through my body. The more Dean says about not remembering his night and his assumption of blacking out, the more I feel nauseous. Dropping the fork onto the plate, I push it as far away from me as I can.

As a distraction, I involve myself within the ongoing discussion.

“Dean, you seriously don’t remember anything about what happened to you last night?” He momentarily thinks over this before responding.

“Nope.” He runs his hands over his face, and it is then, that I truly see how tired he really is.

“Baby, why don’t we get you back to the motel so you can get some rest?” Like a child, Dean just nods his head in agreement, standing from the counter and making his way towards the exit.

“Did you pay?” Sam chimes in with the question as Dean passes him, the younger sibling now standing from his own stool.

“Oops, no. Right.” Myself and Sam make eye contact in that moment, both filled with concern for Dean. But for his sake, we say nothing, choosing to keep this between ourselves for the time being.

Once in the impala, it becomes clear that something is most definitely wrong with Dean. Starting with not putting the car into reverse, to forgetting the details of the current case. After a heated argument between the two brothers, it was settled upon that Sam would contact Rowena in the hopes of discovering the cause of Dean’s possible amnesia.

Back at the motel, Sam stays in the impala to call Rowena, away from the listening ears of his brother. The way that Dean wanders aimlessly from the parking lot to the building itself has me feeling uneasy. Even more so as I observe him approach the wrong room. Jogging over to him, I take him by the arm and swiftly guide him over to the correct door.

“All these dumps look the same.” Dean’s disgruntled demeanour would usually cause me to laugh, however, in this situation it’s not even close to cracking a smile.

“I know, baby. I know.” Tears are now threatening to spill as I open the motel room door. Clearing my throat, I advise Dean to go and take a shower to freshen up, then after get some well deserved sleep.

As soon as the bathroom door closes behind him, my façade breaks and the tears begin to fall. Putting on a brave face whilst watching the man I love slowly forgetting things that have occurred over the last few days, has taken a great toll on me. Like at Waldo’s, a wave of nausea hits me and it only forces me to bawl harder, sitting down on the unmade bed. Through the bathroom door, I can hear Dean undressing, his clothes hitting the cold linoleum floor. A moment of silence is followed by the wooden door opening a fraction.

“Hey, Y/N?” I hurriedly wipe the fallen tears from my face.

“Hmm?” There he stands in the open doorway of the rundown bathroom, torso bare, a nervous expression on his face.

“When,” he frowns before speaking again, “when did I get a tattoo?” Towards the end of his question he perks up, amusement clear in his tone. With his hands, he gestures to the anti-possession mark on his upper chest. At this, I can’t help the small smile that appears on my face, yet at the same time, it fills me with dread.

Standing from my place on the bed, I cross the room to stand in front of him, taking his face in my hands.

“It’s your anti-possession mark, Dean. That,” I take my right hand, placing my fingertips to the black ink marking his skin, “protects you from being possessed by a demon.” I refrain from bringing up the period in which Dean was a demon for a time. Glancing back to his face, I realise that he looks shocked.

“D-demons are real?” At his words, I can no longer stop the tears from tumbling down my cheeks. Again, I break down as I pull his body closer, holding him against me tightly.

“I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

“I know, it’s okay.”

“No matter what happens, I will always love you. I see the way you look at me when you think I’m not looking. That look of worry, concern, all of that. You’ve got nothing to worry about, everything’s going to work out fine.”

Dean’s hands are on my cheeks, his thumbs wiping away the tears. Placing a chaste kiss to my forehead, he again holds me tighter, whispering forever promises of his love.

It has only been a day and a half since Dean’s ‘amnesia’ began taking full force. Yet, I will trade anything to go back to yesterday. With the arrival of Rowena and the discovery that Dean was under a witch’s spell, things soon began to take a turn for the worst.

Awaking this morning to the sight of Dean twisting his wedding band around his finger takes the air out of my lungs. He sits on the opposite side of the motel room, the room that is scattered with sticky notes labelling a majority of the items within it. Long hours of research and tracking to find the witch responsible for this spell, had me falling asleep uncomfortably in the armchair by the door. Dean had occupied the bed, falling into a deep slumber by ten o’clock.

“Why do I have this?” My worst fears have finally come true and as Dean raises his head, my heart breaks completely in two. As usual, I cannot bring myself to lie to him or cause him to feel guilty.

“It’s, erm, it’s a wedding ring.” A scoff leaves his mouth as I swallow down the lump in my throat.

“Am I married?” Snapping my head up to look at him, he realises what he has said. “Am I married to you?”

Half-heartedly, I raise my left hand, indicating the two rings that situate themselves on my ring finger, trying with all my might to not cry again.

“Well, I’m glad it’s you. You’re beautiful.”

A smile is all I can bring to give him in return, instead I excuse myself and retreat to the bathroom, locking the door behind me. In the safety of the small tiled room, I cry until there is nothing left to cry.

Exiting the bathroom, I am met with the sight of Dean, Sam and Rowena, crowded at the door. Before I can ask what is happening, I am interrupted by Dean’s rough voice.

“Who’s this?”

And there it is.

Deciding that it would be best for Rowena to take care of Dean, with no close emotional attachment to him, I accompany Sam to deal with the witches. The agreement was that if Sam did not return within half an hour, I was to enter as back up. Hence me now sneaking my way through an open window on the ground floor of the house.

But with the thought of Dean’s safety and wellbeing on my mind, I am greatly distracted.

Although I have many years of experience with hunting witches, this coven is one of the strongest I have encountered yet, and I am unprepared. Proving true, when I come face to face with the female of the group. Before I can aim my gun, she has me spiralling across the room, into a wooden bookcase. My vision is blurry and my head feels heavy as I try and raise my gun in her direction. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep my eyes open. A final unsuccessful attempt of moving has me drained and I succumb to the darkness that is trying to overtake my vision and mind.

“Hey, Y/N?” Everything sounds far away as I come around. The feeling of someone’s hand on my cheek grounding me. “Y/N! Hey, can you hear me?”

“De?” That was definitely Dean’s voice.

“Hey, sweetheart.” Opening my eyes fully, I am met with the sight of a smiling Dean, although his eyes are filled with worry.

“You remember me?”

“Of course I remember you, how could I forget my beautiful wife?” A laugh escapes me alongside some tears, although this time happy tears.

“Don’t I always promise you, that no matter what, everything is going to be alright?” I nod in agreement. “And don’t I always promise you that I will always love you?”

“Yeah, Dean, you do.”

He pulls me into a hug, although the most uncomfortable hug in the current position in which we are situated.

“And I’m glad I’m married to you. You’re beautiful.”

Not Just a Game

Visual Narrative Meta. 15x11 meta. Meta spec.

Hi my friends! As I promised, here is the third meta from last night episode. The first one is here and the second is here.

This is the visual narrative meta, I already pointed a lot of these things in my previous meta, but now I can show you with these wonderful pics and gifs from my friend @agusvedder Thank you girl!

Mirror Universe parallel

This last episode was full of mirrors in Fortune's bar... Look

Here ... the waitress (Jack mirror) pointed at this character dressed like Destiel my friends, saying he smelled badly, and he looked depressed, so, why is Destiel sad?

Then... Sam is there with him, asking if a game team worth his own life... I mean ... When a person is a fan of a sports team, that person loves it with all his soul... And Destiel dressed guy is aiming for it. For something he loves more than his life. What is that so worth it to give your own life? For Cas it Will means to allow himself to be happy with the man he loves... But pushing that idea away, will make both, Dean and Cas, sad. And depression again.

They can't be happy together...

Another mirror here...

The green cowboy: the green cowboy was a representation of Dean. He even was a champion of Bull Riding Circle, as Agus' reminded me, Dean ride a mechanic bull in Regarding Dean in season 12x11.

And of course Jack mirror here...

Who will bring the luck back later in this episode to the Winchesters.

Then... The other waitress...

This was the happiness in the middle of a green coffee shop. Is representing what Dean really wants, he will prove luck with Castiel anytime.

On the walls...

I already talked about these two observations, but here I go again...

Three Sheeps: Who are the three Sheeps here? Obviously SAM/DEAN and CAS, this is what Chuck thinks... Three obedient Sheeps that follows flock and their shepherd's voice. But they had showed us they ain't no Sheeps... They're a pack of wolves... Thanks to episode 15x10 we discovered the writers are writing an ABO fic, and this wasn't the exception with the whole puppy and his father's reunion, as my friend @spnsmile pointed in this post.

The righteous man standing in front of the profound bond. These two hand prints is a recall to the profound bond between Dean and Castiel, but because he is giving his back to it, it means he ignores (I mean, Dean ignores about it)

Not just a pool game

Okay, if you rewatch the game, it was full of meanings, but I will talk about the game against Fortune.

As I said before Dean was hitting the blue ball mostly the whole time, that ball is Cas, so, he will try to hit him, with a love Confession, trying to prove his luck.

But let's talk about this ones here... First Cas in one hole

And now Dean but inside a different hole. Someone will try to separate them, I will say the Empty, but Agus pointed that because is a goddess who does this... maybe Amara?

And because I can't choose more gifs or pic in this post, I will put this one here...

You have Dean, Cas (red and blue balls) and Sam (yellow ball) and The white one (God?) Hits the black one (The Empty) . I wanna believe this has to do with the following spec I made with my husband in the last hiatus...

What if the Empty can't be defeated, because Cosmic creature without form, and they made a new deal with him to save Castiel? Maybe exchanging Castiel's life for one locked God?

O think the Empty would be satisfied with this deal...

And that would explain this frame...

To Conclude:

This episode was full of visual narrative and mirrors.

The game was foreshadowing a lot of incoming situations in the show, like the Destiel plot and the way to defeat Chuck and maybe, the Empty too.

I’ve organized the fics first by character pairings, then by authors alphabetically. So as not to bombard authors with a multitude of tags, I’ve only tagged their first story listed. And if I was unable to tag an author, I have provided a link to their blog so you can still show them some love and check out some of their other works.
