Increase in Respiratory Diseases
1/2/24
It is the time when all family members gather, transport to other areas, and spread viruses. Recent CNN news states that "Tens of thousands of people have been admitted to hospitals for respiratory illness each week this season." In summary, during Christmas week, there were more than 29,000 patients of COVID and 15,000 patients of flu and thousands of different RSV, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It is very fun to see how the numbers of respiratory virus patients increase every winter, at this season. The semi-migration and holiday cold-weather increase chances of getting respiratory diseases. To further investigate the factors of "annual flu and respiratory season", I went into NIH. A research article from 2014 explains that "influenza virus transmission is strongly modulated by temperature and humidity", which was demonstrated by an experiment with the guinea pigs. The reason behind that is the "impact on the efficiency of respiratory droplet transmission." The researchers mentioned that the reason for the increased efficiency is unclear, but there is a correlation with lowered humidity and increased rate of transmission.
As we all faced the COVID season, let's be aware of virus transmissions to avoid getting sick.
Happy New Year everyone!

6 Arguments for Having Sex Every Day
Tumblr media
Listen, you already understand that having sex is the best thing in the world. We don't have to tell you that. But you might not realize how beneficial knocking boots are to your health and relationship. So we compiled this list for you, highlighting some of the most compelling reasons why you should have sex every day of your life.

It's much easier said than done. You're probably having a lot of couple sex at this point in your relationship. But how can you include it into your daily routine, like flossing, reading your email, or applying deodorant? You may be concerned that once-a-day bumpity-bumpity would take the romance out of things and that your wife—and possibly even you—will grow tired of mashing your bodies together every 24 hours.

But believe us when we tell that obtaining your sexy time on a regular schedule is worth the effort for two reasons: 1) having lots of sex makes you the pinnacle of health and wellness, and 2) your wife will always have the hots for you, and you will for her. It will be easier for both of you to get started at the drop of a hat once you've established a routine (or pair of panties, as the case may be).

Enough with the motivational speeches. Here are several practical reasons why you might explore this erotic venture.
1) Sex is good for your health.
Getting all tangled up in those sheets is good for your soul as well as your body. According to research, persons who have sex a few times a week have greater amounts of immunoglobulin A (IgA), one of the antibodies responsible for combating viruses and bacteria. As a result, if you have a lot of sex with your wonderful lady, you will always be exceptionally healthy and will never, ever get sick.

Okay, not exactly, but you'll have a greater chance of avoiding the nasty bug going about during cold and flu season.

2) Sex is essentially a workout.
Who needs to join a gym? You and your wife can be each other's Planet Fitness, giving each other plenty of opportunities to sweat, stretch, and shock various muscle regions. Seriously: 30 minutes of boinking burns roughly 85 to 90 calories, according to WebMD—and obviously, the longer you last, the more calories you'll burn. Plus, if you're at the top, you're definitely getting great arm, pec, and abdominal exercise as well.

3) Sex every day keeps heart attacks at bay.
While eating lots of green leafy vegetables and practicing relaxation exercises and mindfulness are all good things to do, especially if heart disease runs in your family, it's 2018 and nobody has time for that. Just have more sex instead. A recent study discovered that males who have sex at least twice a week are half as likely to die from heart disease than those who don't have sex very often. See what I mean? It's essentially a doctor's order. (Our lawyers point out that we are not doctors and should not be issuing orders, but you get the idea.)

4) Sex helps keep the fire burning in your marriage.
The ultimate secret to a long and happy marriage, according to University of Chicago researchers, isn't compassion, honesty, or superb listening skills. Simply told, the secret is sex. There's a lot of passionate, sweaty sex.

This makes sense given that sex increases the hormone oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone," which is the molecule that fosters bonding and makes you feel more kind, trusting, and empathic.

5) Sex relieves tension and anxiety and improves sleep.
Orgasm causes your brain to release other neurotransmitters and hormones, such as vasopressin and serotonin, in addition to a surge in oxycontin. This pleasant cocktail of neurotransmitters makes you feel affectionate and blissful, and it wipes away all the poisonous rubbish you have to put up with as an adult every day. Furthermore, right after your climax, your prefrontal cortex goes into sleep mode, effectively knocking you out. Some women may object to your fast retreat to paradise, but you should point them to all of the current studies that indicate how crucial sleep is to a person's general health.

6) Sex keeps your prostate cancer-free.
When it sits in your pants for too long, the fluid in your prostate gets nasty, sluggish, and contaminated with bacteria and viruses. This can result in a lot of nastiness. Constantly "emptying the snake" maintains the plumbing down there happy and healthy, preventing abstinence-induced prostate cancer, which will undoubtedly disrupt your home life.

The key here is to keep things interesting. If you make sex into a monotonous ritual, it will begin to feel like a chore. Keep it interesting, and engaging, and try new things—sex toys, bondage, dive gear, whatever gets your motor revving. And don't feel obligated to have penetrative intercourse every time: there are a million other ways to get down that you haven't explored before.
If you are looking for motivation to enhance your sexual drive.

What I think about COVID-19 this morning - Malia Jones, PhD, MPH
What I think about COVID-19 this morning
March 5, 2020
Maybe I'm the closest thing you personally know to an infectious disease epidemiologist. Maybe not--I'm not an expert on this virus by any stretch, but I have general knowledge and training from studying epidemics that is applicable, so here are my thoughts.
First and foremost: we are going to see a tremendous increase in the number of US cases of COVID-19 in the next week. This is not because of some new pattern in the spread of the disease, but rather due to a major change in the requirements to be tested. Until yesterday, if you had flulike illness but had not recently traveled to China, Italy, South Korea, or Iran, you could not be tested. This is just the way healthcare works, you get tested if you meet the case definition and the case definition included travel.
As of yesterday, you can be tested if you are sick and have a doctor's order to be tested. So expect things to feel a lot more panicky all of a sudden. We will see hundreds or thousands of new cases as a result of testing increases.
Second: is that panic legitimate? Sort of. This is not the zombie apocalypse. The death rate of 30 deaths per 1000 cases is probably a wild overestimate. (The denominator is almost certainly wrong because it is confirmed cases--and we only confirm cases when we test for them). That said, even at 3 per 1000 cases, this would be a big deal. A very big deal. By way of comparison, the death rate for influenza is between 1 and 2 in 1000 cases. So, yeah. Roughly 0x to 30x worse than a huge global flu pandemic? That's a problem.
Unlike flu, COVID-19 is not *particularly* dangerous for children, so that’s some happy news. It is dangerous for older adults and those with lung conditions, so we need to be extra careful to protect those populations from exposure.
Also, for millions of Americans, getting any serious illness requiring a hospitalization is a major problem because they can't pay for it. And our health care system is probably going to struggle to keep up with it all. And with China basically closed, our global economy is going to take a huge hit and we'll feel the shockwaves for years. Those are real concerns.
What can we do? Our focus should be on *slowing down the spread* of this disease so that we have time to get caught up. Here is my advice:
 1. Wash. Your. Hands. Wash them so much.
The current best guess is that coronavirus is transmitted via close contact and surface contamination. A very small study came out yesterday suggesting that the virus causing COVID-19 is *mostly* transmitted via contact with contaminated surfaces.
I have started washing my hands each time I enter a new building and after being in shared spaces (classrooms especially), in addition to the standard practice of washing after using the bathroom and before eating. Soap and water. Hand sanitizer also kills this virus, as does rubbing alcohol (the main ingredient in hand sanitizer).
There is no need to be obsessive about this. Just wash your hands. A little bit more effort here goes a long way.
 2. Don’t pick your nose. Or put your fingers in your mouth, on your lips, or in your eyes. Surface contact works like this: you touch something dirty. Maybe it's an elevator button. Virus sticks to your hands. Then you rub your eye. Then you touch your sandwich, and put the sandwich in your mouth. Now there is virus in your eyes and mouth. See?
You may be thinking, but I don’t pick my nose because I am an adult! An observational study found that people sitting at a desk working touched their eyes, nose, or lips between 3 and 50 times per hour. Perfectly normal grown-ups, not lowlifes like my friends.
2a. There was one note that came out suggesting that face masks actually promote surface contamination because you're always adjusting them--i.e., touching your face. I don’t know if that’s true. But face masks should not be worn by the public right now, unless you are the person who is sick and you're on your way to or actually at the doctor's office. The mask’s function is to prevent spit from flying out of your mouth and landing on things when you cough or sneeze. It flies out of your mouth and is caught in the mask instead. If you are the person who is sick and not on the way to the doctor, go home. Let the people who really need them have the masks. Like doctors.
[ETA on 3/6/2020 honestly people I am getting so much push back on the mask recommendation!! The world is running low on masks. If everyone wants a mask so they can feel ok about keeping their Daytona Beach Spring Break plans and then hospitals in India can't buy them anymore, shame on us.]
Coronavirus does not appear to be airborne in the sense that doesn't remain floating around freely in the air for a long time, like measles does. You are probably not going to breathe it in, unless someone is coughing in front of you. If someone is coughing in your face, feel free to tell them to get their ass home and move 6 feet away from them. (Yeah I know, if you have a toddler, you're screwed.)
 3. Sanitize the objects you and lots of other people touch, especially people outside your family--like door handles, shared keyboards at schools (brrr), salad bar tongs, etc. Best guesses are that the virus can live on surfaces for 2-48 hours, maybe even longer, depending on the surface, temperature, and humidity.
Many common household cleaning products will kill this virus. However, white vinegar solution does not. You can make your own inexpensive antimicrobial spray by mixing 1 part household bleach to 99 parts cold tap water. Spray this on surfaces and leave for 10-30 minutes. Note: this is bleach. It will ruin your sofa.
 4. "Social distancing." You're going to get so sick of this phrase. This means keeping people apart from one another (preferably 6 feet apart, and sanitizing shared objects). This public health strategy is our next line of defense, and its implementation is what will lead to flights and events cancelled, borders closed, and schools closed.
For now, you could limit face-to-face meetings, especially large ones. Zoom is an excellent videoconferencing option. If you spend time in shared spaces, see #1. Ask your child's school about their hygiene plan, if they haven't already told you what it is. If I were in charge of a school setting, I'd be hand sanitizing the s*** out of the kids' hands, including in and out of each space, and taking temperatures at the door. I am planning to email our school nurse right after this to ask if they need my volunteer help cleaning surfaces.
If you can telecommute, do that a little more. If you are someone's boss and they could do their job remotely, encourage them to do that.
Avoid large gatherings of people if at all possible, especially if they are in an area with cases OR places that lots of people travel to. If you attend group events and start to feel even a little bit sick within 2 to 14 days, you need to self isolate immediately. Like for a tiny tickle in your throat.
 5. All your travel plans are about to get screwed up. If you are considering booking flights right now, get refundable tickets. ETA: most trip insurance will not cover cancellations due to a pandemic. Look for "cancel for any reason" trip insurance.
Considerations for risks related to that trip you’re planning: how bad would it be if you got stuck where you are going for 3 to 6 weeks? How bad would it be to be isolated at home for 2-3 weeks upon your return? Do you have direct contact with people who are over 70 and/or have lung conditions? If those seem really bad to you, rethink your trip, especially if it is to a location where there are confirmed cases.
 6. If you are sick, stay home. Please! For the love of all that is holy. Stay at home. Your contributions to the world are really just not that important.
 7. There is a good chance some communities will see school cancelled and asked to limit non-essential movement. If someone in your family gets sick your family will almost certainly be isolated for 2-3 weeks (asked to stay at home). You could start stocking up with essentials for that scenario, but don't run out and buy a years' worth of toilet paper. Again, not the apocalypse. 2 weeks' worth of essential items. Refill any prescriptions, check your supply of coffee, kitty litter, and jigsaw puzzles.
 8. I do want to remind everyone that when public health works, the result is the least newsworthy thing ever: nothing happens. If this all fizzles out and you start feeling like ‘Wah, all that fuss for nothing??’ Then send a thank-you note to your local department of public health for a job well done. Fingers crossed for that outcome.
 9. Look, I think there are some positives here. All this handwashing could stop flu season in its tracks! We have an opportunity to reduce our global carbon footprint by telecommuting more, flying less, and understanding where our stuff comes from. We can use this to think about the problems with our healthcare system. We can use this to reflect on our positions of privilege and implicit biases. We can start greeting each other using jazz hands. I'm genuinely excited about those opportunities.
There is a lot we don't yet know about this virus. It didn't even exist 90 days ago. So stay tuned, it is an evolving situation. The WHO website has a decent FAQ. Free to email or text with questions, and you can forward this to others if you think it's useful.
May the force be with you.

P.S. The number one question I am getting is, did you really write this? Yes. I wrote this.
I didn't write it for professional purposes, so I didn't put my work email on it. It was really just meant to be an email to my friends and family in advance of what I expect to be an escalation in the panic level. But it was apparently welcome information and went viral on FB. I've decided not to edit out the swears, even though I wrote this with a much smaller audience in mind.
Thanks for checking your facts! Go science!

Email From My Parents’ Former Chiropractor, a Medical Review
Tumblr media
I had to read that and now so do you. But guess what? I also get to tear it apart line by line with extreme prejudice. And not the bad kind. At. All.
This went out to probably close to a thousand people.
People will die because of this email.
“We have been keeping up with the true data from the CDC and WHO that is giving very accurate information on this virus.“
I’m relatively neutral on this. The CDC and WHO are probably some of the most official sources. They’re a little behind (1-2 days for WHO, and both only update every 24 hours), but overall no one would fault him for citing them as sources. Here’s the source I’ve been using.
My biggest problem with that beginning is that the sentence structure is... alarmingly presidential.
“First, this is not a new virus. It's been known to cause respiratory problems since the 1960's.”
The group of viruses called “coronavirus” have been identified since 1965. But there are hundreds of unique viruses in this group, and 7 of them infect humans at very different severities. The most recent one, identified in December 2019 and now named SARS-CoV-2, is definitely a coronavirus, but it’s also definitely not one we’ve seen before.
“So far, the new coronavirus has led to more than 100,000 illnesses and more than 3,000 deaths worldwide.”
I mean, he’s technically right that it’s “more than” 100,000 cases. But this email went out today, when confirmed cases were a lot closer to 784,400 and deaths were 37,780 (see source above). Even the WHO numbers today are 693,224 and 33,106 respectively. So my best guess is he was writing this on March 7th (per WHO sitreps) and didn’t bother to update it before sending it out March 30th.
“In the U.S. alone, the flu has caused an estimated 34 million illnesses, 350,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths this season... Per the CDC data, the flu virus as far more contagious and deadlier.”
This info is also substantially out of date. Currently, these numbers are 38 mil, 400,000, and 24,000 respectively.
I have to say, I did fall for the corona vs flu false equivalency once upon a time, but I’ve learned and grown a lot since then. We’re prepared for the number of hospital beds we need for (seasonal-not-pandemic) flu. We know how fast spreads and we have a vaccine that offers at least partial protection from it. We have widespread testing for it. We’re relatively comfortable with it’s severity and mortality rate.
But you heard it here last: with the data we have right now, none of those things apply to covid-19. We don’t have the beds, ventilators, or PPE to take all of it’s excessive illness on, which leads to higher mortality rates. It's more contagious than flu (infecting 2-2.5 people per infected person, vs seasonal flu’s 1.3). We don’t have a vaccine or significant natural immunity. We don’t have adequate testing, so we don’t know enough to know if anything we do know is close to correct. All of that makes it much, much worse than seasonal flu despite numbers.
“What to do? First, all patients are responsible for their own immune system.”
I mean, sure, okay, you have the responsibility to make the best choices you can for you in the situation that you’re in. That’s fair. And generally people do. But saying you’re responsible for your own immune system seems to imply that if you get covid-19, it’s your own dang fault because you weren’t responsible enough?
If that stresses you out, rest easy in that you don’t control nearly as much of your health status (look up the Whitehall Studies) and immune status (look up the Pittsburgh Cold Studies and a paper that came out of them titled “Types of Stressors That Increase Susceptibility to the Common Cold in Healthy Adults” by Cohen et al, 1998), as people like to think you do.
“When a bacteria or virus enter the body, your bodies natural immune system will attack this foreign body by creating an antibody that will destroy these foreign viruses or bacteria's (sic)...”
Okay, sure, that’s not a bad explanation.
“...So, when someone isolates themselves, the virus will still be "out there" and vaccinations will not stop the spread of any virus. A vaccination will force your body to make antibodies, which is the body's natural response to a virus. In other words, the virus will populate the world.“
I’ll be honest, I don’t entirely understand what he means with this passage, but I’ll give it my best shot.
If you never come into contact with a virus, it’s certainly true that you won’t ever get antibodies from it naturally. You also won’t get sick, and won’t have the opportunity to spread it to other people. That’s, like... the entire point of isolation.
But if a vaccine exists, that gives you the opportunity to have the best of both worlds- you get to make antibodies, and you never have to get sick! Score!
And if a lot of people have the antibodies, the illness can’t spread through the population (”herd” or “community” immunity), meaning that very few people get sick. You don’t have to be exposed to the virus after being vaccinated in order to become immune. The vaccine is literally the part of the virus the body needs to be exposed to to learn how to create antibodies.
He then goes on to list the ways in which you can build a strong immune system to fight covid-19. These suggestions include:
“Eat Healthy Natural Foods: These foods have the vitamins and nutriatiants (sic) your body needs to build its immune system.”
Sure, healthy food is good for you. No one’s arguing with you there.
“Get Adjusted: Every tissue in the body depends 100% nerve supply from the brain. These nerves carry all the cells information to repair and regenerate injured tissue. When the nervous systems is interfered with, this communication system between the brain and the tissue cells is weakened, therefore causing decreased immune response.”
This isn’t wrong so much as poorly worded. The brain (and vagus nerve) is involved in healing injured or infected tissues, particularly as part of modulating inflammatory response and eliciting reactions like vomiting, mucous production, and coughing to get rid of irritating substances. The inflammatory response kicks off the healing process, and we know that if the vagus nerve has been cut or in some other way interfered with, there is not as much inflammation across the board (which is why vagus nerve simulators have been shown to work against arthritis).
I’m not sure if there’s literature on chiropractic care improving this, but I certainly don’t think it’s impossible.
May I, however, suggest an editor at this point?
“Sleep 7-9 hours per night: Cellular regeneration happens mostly a night. Drink enough water: Dehydrate causes stress in the body, that will weakened the immune system.“
Great!
“Take natural supplements: These will help your immune systems, if you are not getting enough nutrients and vitamins through your healthy diet.”
Supplements generally aren’t necessary for most people (unless they have a diagnosed deficiency), but if you just like taking a multivitamin no one’s stopping you. Just don’t go overboard.
“P.S. Our team at [redacted] Chiropractic is super healthy. We follow the above guidelines!! We are asking anyone who may be ill, to stay home, or even more important get adjusted in our office [emphasis added]. Just let us know you are not feeling well and we will get you in and out with minimal contact with others. We take pride in cleanliness with all our patients. Hope to see you soon.”
I just... felt the need to leave that last paragraph in it’s entirety. If you’re all the way at the end of this post, you really deserve to read it again and let it sink in that he’s ASKING SOMEONE TO GO OUT IN PUBLIC WITH COVID-19 IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC, IN AN AREA WHERE A “SHELTER IN PLACE” ORDER HAS BEEN ISSUED.
As medical facilities, chiropractic offices are allowed to stay open. I don’t mind this generally. A lot of people rely on chiropractic care for pain control and I would never want to take that away from them if there was another way.
But I work at a doctor’s office (sometimes). We are all but refusing to see patients in the office unless absolutely necessary to comply with social distancing rules and conserve PPE. If I were a chiropractor right now, I would be limiting my services to emergencies or people who really can’t get along without it, and encouraging people to NOT COME IN IF THEY KNOW OR SUSPECT THEY ARE SICK HOLY CRAP MAN STAP.
That’s like, the bare, bare minimum.
Thank you for reading.

BOOSTING IMMUNITIES DURING THE WINTER: A How-To From a Trusted RDN
Tumblr media
We daily hear tips for prevention and protection in these COVID times: Wash your hands often and well, sneeze into your elbow, stay home so you don't spread illness when you're sick, social distance and wear a mask. And as an RDN, I’d like to add some ways to protect yourself from the inside-out with an extra dose of stay-well defense strategies! Use delicious wellness to keep your immune system in optimal working order so that you're more able to fight off infection:
Tumblr media
LINE UP FATTY FISH AND SHELLFISH Of all fats, long chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) -- found in fish such as Pacific and Atlantic salmon -- created the highest blood levels of flu and virus-fighting T cells and interferon-gamma cytokines in a British study of 150 people. Cytokines are thought to help clear viruses out of your body. And, getting adequate selenium (plentiful in oysters, mussels, lobsters, crabs, and clams -- and brazil nuts!) also increases immune cell production of cytokines in a British study of 22 adults.
Tumblr media
BOOST T-CELLS WITH TEA Ten Harvard subjects who drank 5 daily cups of black tea for 2 weeks had T cells that secreted 10 times more virus-fighting interferon, compared with nine people who drank the same amount of a tea substitute. Although this study was about black tea, green tea has been shown to have many immune boosting benefits as well.
GET MILK Dairy products provide conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which raised immune system response to the flu in an animal study. Early research suggests that CLA may have a similar effect in humans.
Tumblr media
GO FOR GARLIC It could be a virus's worst enemy! One of our oldest cultivated plants, garlic has been used for centuries to treat everything from the plague and leprosy to toothaches. In the 1800s, American doctors prescribed garlic for colds and coughs. Today, scientists are busy uncovering the many ways that garlic keeps us healthy, and the list just keeps getting longer.
Garlic cloves contain hundreds of active ingredients, including sulfur-containing compounds (such as allicin) that give it its distinct and pungent aroma. Garlic is antibacterial and antiviral. It's also an expectorant that helps you cough up phlegm.
To get its full virus-fighting benefits, stick with fresh garlic cloves; when it comes to antibacterial activity, nothing is better than raw garlic - capsules don't cut it. Believe it not, most infectious disease researchers recommend 4 to 8 garlic cloves a day. If you cook it, do so very lightly, and before heating it, chop it, and let it sit for 10 minutes to give the disease-fighting compounds a chance to develop.
Try dried garlic, too! Dried garlic concentrates not only the flavor, but also the nutrients. But, as with other spices, it lose potency the longer it sits, so go for fresh spice blends!
STOCK UP ON BASICS An overall healthy diet builds resistance to viruses, but focus on these nutrients especially:
Protein: 5 to 6.5 ounces of chicken, fish, or meat for women; 6 to 8 ounces for men. Protein foods are also rich sources of iron, zinc, and Vitamin B12. Vitamins A, B6: At least daily servings of red or orange fruits and green leafy veggies. Vitamin E: Olive oil or canola oil; walnuts; almonds; sunflower seeds; and hazelnuts. Magnesium: Peanuts and peanut butter.
And optimize your vitamin D levels. As I often discuss, getting more than adequate Vitamin D is one of the best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds, and Vitamin D deficiency is likely to be one of the culprits behind the seasonality we see with the flu. Some of the most delicious sources of Vitamin D come straight from that salmon that is giving you your omega-3 boost, and mushrooms (such as portabellas) that are exposed to ultraviolet light.

Beyond food, there are several things you can do to stay your best this Winter:
Get enough rest. Just like it becomes harder for you to get your daily tasks done if you're tired, if your body is overly fatigued it will be harder for it to fight infection.
Have effective tools to defuse stress. We all face some stress every day, but if stress becomes overwhelming then your body will be less able to fight off illness.
Exercise. When you exercise, you increase your circulation and your blood flow throughout your body. The components of your immune system are also better circulated, which means your immune system has a better chance of finding an illness before it spreads.
May you eat well, live well -- and stay well!

Flu vaccination prevents millions of flu-related illnesses and deaths annually, but vaccination rates are low for many reasons.
During the 2018-2019 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that about 45 percent of U.S. adults received the flu vaccine. While this is an increase of 8 percent from 2017-2018, it falls way below the national goal of 70 percent of American adults receiving a flu shot.
One of the common myths that leads people to avoid the flu shot is that they think the shot will give them the flu. But that is simply not true. The virus in the vaccine is not active, and an inactive virus cannot transmit disease. What is true is that you may feel the effects of your body mounting an immune response, but that does not mean you have the flu.
I am a nursing professor with experience in public health promotion, and I hear this and other myths often. Here are the facts and the explanations behind them.
Inactive virus
Influenza, or the flu, is a common but serious infectious respiratory disease that can result in hospitalization or even death. The CDC estimates that during a “good” flu season, approximately 8 percent of the U.S. population could get the flu. That is roughly 26 million people.
Each year the flu season is different, and the flu virus also affects people differently. One dangerous complication of the flu is pneumonia, which can result when your body is working hard to fight the flu. This is particularly dangerous in older adults, young children, and those whose immune systems aren’t working well, such as those receiving chemotherapy or transplant recipients.
Historically, millions of Americans get the flu each year, hundreds of thousands are hospitalized and tens of thousands of people die of flu-related complications. During the 1918 flu pandemic, one-third of the world’s population, or about 500 million people, were infected with the flu. Since that time, vaccine science has dramatically changed the impact of infectious diseases.
The cornerstone of flu prevention is vaccination. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older who does not have contraindications to the vaccine, receive the flu shot.
And just as the polio vaccine won’t give a child polio, the flu vaccine will not cause the flu. That’s because the flu vaccine is made with inactive strains of the flu virus, which are not capable of causing the flu.
That said, some people may feel sick after they receive the flu shot, which can lead to thinking they got sick from the shot.
Why you might feel off
But feeling under the weather after a flu shot is actually a positive. It can be a sign that your body’s immune response is working.
What happens is this: When you receive the flu shot, your body recognizes the inactive flu virus as a foreign invader. This is not dangerous; it causes your immune system to develop antibodies to attack the flu virus when exposed in the future. This natural immune response may cause some people to develop a low-grade fever, headache or overall muscle aches. These side effects can be mistaken for the flu but are likely the body’s normal response to vaccination.
And the good news is these natural symptoms are short-term side effects compared to the flu, which can last much longer and is more severe. It is estimated that less than 2 percent of people who get a flu shot will develop a fever.
Also, people often confuse being sick with a bad cold or stomach flu with having influenza. Influenza symptoms can include a fever, chills, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, fatigue and headaches. Cold symptoms can be similar to the flu but are typically milder. The stomach flu, or gastroenteritis, can be caused by several different bacteria or viruses. Symptoms of gastroenteritis involve nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Preshot exposures
Some people do get the flu after they have received a flu shot, but that is not from the shot. It can happen for a couple of reasons.
First, they could have been exposed to the flu before they had the shot. It can take up to two weeks after receiving the flu shot to develop full immunity. Therefore, if you do get the flu within this period, it is likely that you were exposed to the flu either before being vaccinated or before your full immunity developed.
Second, depending on the strain of the flu virus that you are exposed to, you could still get the flu even if you received the vaccine. Every year, the flu vaccine is created to best match the strain of the flu virus circulating. Therefore, the effectiveness of the flu vaccine depends on the similarity between the virus circulating in the community and the killed viruses used to make the vaccine.
If there is a close match between the two, then the effectiveness of the flu vaccine will be high. If there is not a close match, however, the vaccine’s effectiveness could be reduced. Still, it is imperative to note that even when there is not a close match between the circulating virus and the virus used to make the vaccine, the vaccine will still lessen the severity of flu symptoms and also help prevent flu-related complications.
Bottom line: You cannot get influenza from getting the flu vaccine. As someone who has treated many people who do get the flu, I strongly urge you to get the shot.
Not mentioned, but also true: Vaccinations do not cause autism

Stressed About Coronavirus? Here’s How Yoga Can Help.
Put your asana, breath work, and a few Ayurvedic herbs and rituals to use to stay calm, get the sleep you need, and boost your immune system. By now you’re getting office notices about staying home if you so much as sneeze, or suspicious side-eyes when you stifle a cough on the subway during rush hour. Your pantry may be stocked with extra pasta, toilet paper, and Purell. You’re already taking the most important precautions—washing your hands well, staying home if you’re sick (don’t worry, with loads of events getting cancelled you won’t miss much!), and keeping a safe distance from people who are coughing. It’s hard to avoid the noise and notifications as we contemplate the threat of a pandemic. According to the latest news reports, more than 89,000 people worldwide have been infected by a novel coronavirus, which causes a highly contagious respiratory disease named COVID-19. And we’re starting to see confirmed cases, community spread, and six fatalities (at press time) accrue stateside. We can expect the number of infections in the U.S. to rise—possibly along with our anxiety about what’s to come. But the stress related to uncertainty, anticipation, and fear can also wreak havoc on our health, so we reached out to Ayurveda, yoga, and mindfulness teachers to help us get a handle on how our practice can fortify our bodies and minds, which may help give us an edge to ward off the common cold, flu, and, yes, coronavirus. “It’s all about keeping stress levels low and your immune system healthy,” says Larissa Hall Carlson, an Ayurvedic Practitioner and the former dean of the Kripalu School of Ayurveda. Here, she and other experts share their top tips for staying healthy.
Tips For Optimizing Your Immune System
1. Gargle warm saltwater and use a neti pot. These ancient Ayurvedic strategies—dissolving about ½ tsp. Himalayan or sea salt in 8 oz. of warm water—is “non-negotiable” if you are trying to prevent sickness, says Hall Carlson. Germs and bacteria hang out in your nose and throat 24 hours before digging into your blood stream and affecting your immunity, she explains, and salt clears them out. You can use these saltwater rinses as preventative measures or when you start to feel sick. See also Ayurveda 101: 6 Ways to Prevent Colds and Flu 2. Sleep it off. “A balanced circadian clock (or your internal time-keeping for cycles of sleep and alertness) is directly linked to a strong immune system, according to Ayurveda, and now Nobel Prize-winning science,” explains John Douillard, best-selling author and founder of LifeSpa.com, which combines ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern science. He suggests going to bed two to three hours after sunset and getting up with the sun to help maintain healthy circadian rhythms. See also 8 Yoga Poses to Sleep Better Tonight Other ways to get better sleep and boost immunity? Disconnect from the damaging blue light emitted from your screens by wearing blue-light glasses or turning your night filter on 24/7, says Douillard. And avoid big, heavy, late meals, since they are difficult to digest and lead to ama, or undigested food, that can also compromise immunity. Yoga Journal’s Medical Editor Timothy McCall, MD, adds that fear is vata deranging, interfering with sleep and in turn undermining immunity. (According to Ayurvedic thought, vata is like the wind. It's cool, dry, rough, and erratic—and anything with similar properties will tend to increase it. When it is out of balance it’s called vata derangement.) See also Grounding Tips for Vata Imbalance McCall recommends using yoga and Ayurveda to build a foundation for immunity: living your life in accordance with the rhythms of nature, sleeping enough, eating food full of prana (or life force), and building ojas, or overall well-being. “Immunity is about how you live your life,” he says. “Our big assignment as yogis is to try to be content and go about our lives as best we can in the face of uncertainty. The reality is that fear puts us in touch with the truth, which is that we can sometimes affect outcomes, but ultimately we don’t have control over what happens to us.” See also The Stress-Busting Yoga Sequence to Conquer Tension 3. Drink tulsi tea. One of the most revered Ayurvedic herbs, tulsi is known as a stress, fever, and headache reducer and lung clearer, says Hall Carlson. “I don’t go anywhere without it; it’s in my car, bag, and purse.” When viruses like coronavirus take hold, they create problematic respiratory conditions, which tulsi may be able to help soothe, adds Hall Carlson. 4. Supplement. If tulsi isn’t your cup of tea, you can boost immunity and fight immune-compromising fatigue and anxiety with the Ayurvedic super-herb Ashwagandha, says Douillard. He also recommends turmeric as a natural anti-microbial. 5. Breathe deep. Your lungs are your biggest lymph pumps, clearing out clutter and toxins, explains Hall Carlson. She suggests a daily practice of pranayama to mitigate stress and boost immunity. Deep breathing, or complete yogic breath, will do—anything that opens your lungs and side ribs, and keeps things moving. 6. Massage it out. Hall Carlson also recommends daily abhyanga, or self-massage, with organic oils—such as sesame, though olive and coconut work too—to nourish and hydrate skin and settle frazzled nerves. This is a preventative measure only; when you’re sick, your metabolism is trying to process toxins and can get overwhelmed taking on both bugs and heavy oils. See also Ayurveda 101: 4 Small Changes That Make a Big Difference 7. Take vata-balancing breaks during the day. When you’re feeling scattered and stressed, make sure to take a few minutes, ideally up to 20, for mindfulness practices, walks, quiet sitting, or slow flow or Restorative Yoga, especially toward the end of the day when you’ve put in hours of work and may be pushing your limits, says Hall Carlson. Don’t skimp on Savasana, allowing your nervous system to reset. McCall warns against overly ambitious yoga when you're in a state of fear and anxiety. “When you’re fearful, Restorative Yoga is not going to work,” he says. “You first need to burn off anxiety with more energetic practices and then you can get to the restorative.” If you feel riled up, he suggests doing a strong practice for 20-30 minutes, then transitioning to more calming practices. “This is also how teachers can help their students ratchet down their nervous systems to a calmer place, by structuring classes this way,” says McCall. Here is Hall Carlson's slow flow sequence for opening your lungs and helping you stay calm and strong as we head into flu (and coronavirus) season: This Yoga Sequence Will Reduce Stress and Boost Immunity. He makes me livid! I get so mad!!! I don't understand him at all. He makes me go UGH but in bad ways.
I went off on him first before I realised what his problem was... Like total accusations and misfit drama. All paranoid loca. I don't give a shit.
I draw conclusions and those were the most obvious.
But when you know someone... You have to remember their stupidity. One time he confessed... And I already had decided to break up with him... I was all I'm waiting till his dad dies then I'm done. He's a good friend when he tries but he doesn't make me,a priority. And so I hadn't told him. I just tired of him, upsetting me so I had to remove me.
So he said he wouldn't do anything for his pain, then, he would take 2x his Percocet with 5 shots of tequila then treat me like shit.
I really hadnt noticed. I was all "oh he's just in his mood where he's decided I'm not important to him"
And true enough when he told me his dad died I walked away from our relationship.
But honestly ... Years later... I missed him.. Because he treated me best. Because I say I walked
I mean I left, completely.
But despite his faults he's always treated me best. I mean person to person. He didn't give me what I wanted from, the relationship. But as a low key friend, he understood me the most
He understood i was scared to go to sleep and he would stay on the phone and help,me,sleep so I could. No one else can do that. My daughter, if she was sleeping with me. I could listen to her breathe and I could fall asleep that way. Because it would calm my r breathing if she was sleeping that calm sleep, breath
But he knew all what to say. And I never had to tell him or even tell him I was afraid to sleep or even admit it to myself.

I hope this helps some of y'all that are anti medicine as well.
I don't like hospitals or doctors (I like my personal doctors But aside from them) in general. I'm afraid of them. They make me hostile. I feel like theyre some dangerous S&M dungeon
Go and wait for hours to get bad news then they don't give you what you need because you're so fucking exhausted they don't understand. Or don't care or are the ones that like to kill patients.
So I like my doctors although I have to wait for hours to see them past my appointment time, they take extra time to see me and cover what I think I need. Their quality is worth the wait. I have 3. Primary, Pain and Urgent Care. And I use the computer urgent care where I leave an online message after finishing a long ass quizz through the insurance website.
And whatever pills they give me, I Google to make sure they were right. They always are. Im also interested in what else the pills cover. Like i take 2 different anti seizure pills for pain and one also for insulin sensitivity increase and metabolic increase. And i take an antidepressant that also covers fibromyalgia.
I have 13 prescriptions. Monthly. Some I have to take more than once per day. Plus i take vitamins.
Then I Google the pharmacy pills to make sure the pharmacy was right.
So.
I get it. Sometimes I don't want to take 13 prescriptions more than once per day or even at all.
But we need to know what we are taking and why.
And why it is important.
And we need to take our medicine. So we can survive
I think this information is especially important during this epidemic.
Now realize that antibiotics are not useful on viruses unless the virus causes a bacterial infection. Like.
A cold is a virus but in some people like myself and used to in my daughter, causes a severe sinus infection which requires antibiotics.
I know the point at which we need antibiotics and so i go to my urgent care lady because she understands and we just do a walk in. And i don't overwhelm my doctor who is taking time to give quality care and has long waiting patients.
But otherwise a virus does not respond to antibiotics. And anti-virus medications are quite rare.
Flu shot... But not a cold shot..
So we take over the counter medicine for our symptoms. Like coughing and runny nose
Sinus pressure in the eyes, nose, teeth. Jaw.
If you have a tooth ache you can take sinus medicine. Because the worst tooth pain is actually in your sinus cavity! That's a secret trick. Works every time.
So basically anytime you have facial pain that doesn't respond to Tylenol or ibuprofen or alieve, you can take sinus medicine. Also ear pain.
Google sinus cavities in the face and you'll see why.
Now an ear and sinus infection is a bacteria, usually but usually our bodies can fight it Well without an anti biotic. As long as it is treated with over the counter medicine. But sometimes, like with myself and my daughter, sometimes an antibiotic is needed..but that is after at least a week to 10 days of serious green overflow that doesn't respond to over the counter medicine.
Sometimes the bacteria is lab revealed by terrorists during the "flu and cold season" to create an income for pharmaceutical companies. For my daughter and i, they're usually too strong for our immune system.
Although since my ex husband left town, my daughter's immune system has significantly became stronger. While mine has not. So she needs less antibiotics, than I do.
Otherwise, my body can fight it on its own with a few doses of otc.
I had a tooth pulled a few years ago.. It created a pathway to my sinuses. I could rinse water in my mouth and it would come out my nose. I saw an ear, nose and throat specialist whom said i needed surgery immediately to repair my nose.
I said no thank you mother fucker
I had to have clearance from my cardiologist. So i took a stress test and failed. So i had to have an ultra sound. It wasn't good. But they said I could have the surgery since it was simple.
I said that's cool, but I don't want to.
I haven't done it. So I get sinus infection and pain quite often. My bone structure in my nose is center in my right nostril. Meaning it's really fucking bad
From being punched in the face a lot. The surgery sounds fucking horrible. And it's a cosmetic change.
I'm all nope. I'm a single mom. She don't take good care of me. I'll drown in the blood sliding down the back of my throat.
The tooth removal was so bad... It was horrible. There was blood every where for days... I can only imagine the nose surgery would be the same
I also hate the smell of blood. So I'm like no. It sounds like the most miserable thing.
If I had someone to take care of me and baby me like a little blood soaked lamb in need of care... That's s different story.. But I don't have anyone that would take care of me
After my tooth... I was throwing up the blood and my kid just stood there and stared,. Which I wanted to hide it from her I was sick... But I was in the kitchen and began violently puking in the trash can... Scared her to death
"Mom I'm scared"
"I am, too. This has never happened before"
So yeah fuck that nose. I got one crooked fucking nose. And it makes me sick.
She wants me to have surgery so I'll quit snoring.
Well.
Ear plugs are at the Dollar Tree, babe.
So y'all take your pills that you need
Some one cares about you
And they don't want to slap your face off. But you'll drive them to it. And a crooked nose isnt all its cracked up to Be. It pretty much sucks.
I can't even blow it Like a normal person....

People’s statements concerning Corona...
You know what time it is? Rant time! Because I spent waaaay too much time on Facebook and Twitter and read SO much ( excuse my words ) bullshit, that I need to talk about it. A disturbing amount of people still think this whole Corona mess is fake, a conspiracy, „just a flu“ or a bioweapon attack. Of course a random Youtuber, influencer or guy on Twitter is smarter than all scientists, doctors and politicians combined because they „woke up and see through everything that happens“ right now.
I guess they inhaled too much toxin while making their tinfoil hats, but let's take a closer look at those statements.
- „Corona is fake, people are not dying from it, they die from the panic that is caused!“
So hundreds, no, thousands of people are suffocating and their lungs are giving up because of media information? They hear that they are not allowed to go shopping at the mall anymore and gasp for air? They realize that restaurants are closed and that they have to cook meals themselves now and drop dead from the shock? Seriously?
- „It's a conspiracy, THEY want to control us, THEY want to change the system and distract from other things!“ None of those morons ever mentions who exactly THEY are. Lizard people? Illuminati? Toilet paper manufacturers? We'll never know.
Anyway, someone who seriously thinks that should think further. Why should THEY do this? The global economy is crashing, borders are closed, tens or hundreds of thousands have or will lose their jobs, people have to stay at home, governments have to invest billions to save their countries. Newsflash, governments usually want to earn money, not spend it.
More unemployment = less tax revenues.
Basically it's like someone usually earning $2000 per month, then suddenly they have to pay high bills for their broken car, get a new computer to continue working and help their sick parents while suddenly only earning half of their income.
And seriously, can you imagine all leaders of the world sitting down on one table in a secret Fortress of Evil and scheming a plan to terrorize and enslave humanity? Most of them only care for their own country and why would anyone risk driving their own country against the wall?
- „It's just a flu, lots of people die from the flu, it's normal.“ The flu  doesn't affect the lungs that badly and people's bodies often simply give up and they die at home. Corona directly attacks the lungs and many of those who catch it badly need to be taken to intensive care unit and be intubated. It's way more contagious than the flu and the dangerous part is that most people will never know they actually had it, but ran around and infected others who could die from it. The death rate is higher than the flu. Flu : roughly 0,1% Corona : 2-10% ( Numbers vary from source to source, but it's definitely higher than the flu. )
- „In Germany 25000 people died from it in 2017/2018, the country didn't shut down because of that either.“
I checked those numbers. 25000 is a rough estimation, including deaths where flu was assumed to be involved in the deaths. The cases that were actually tested and proven were less than 1700.
By the way, a flu season lasts 5 months and the Corona craze merely started a few weeks ago. Just saying.
The main problem here seems to be that people can't think ahead. Exponential increase is too complicated for their simple little minds. Corona spreads like crazy, so with the aforementioned higher death rate, if more people get infected then more will die. The only reason we don't have more deaths yet is because governments took action and everyone tries to keep the number of infections low.
So what do you want? Every country waiting for the number of Corona deaths to surpass those of the average flu first and only then starting to do something against it? I'm convinced those people would be the first ones to scream „Why did no one do anything sooner!?“
-“It's a bio weapon from China which they used against us!“ Nevermind the fact that a team of international and independent scientists examined the virus last month already and assured it's natural. Even if it spread from the Wuhan Institute of Virology accidentally, that's what it was, an accident. Why on Earth would they want to endanger their own people? Their economy? Everything?
-“The average age of the Italian people who died from Corona is 79. The average lifespan there is 83. It's all normal, nature and such.“ Wow, just...wow. I wonder if they would still be as cold and heartless when their own parents or grandparents died a painful death from lack of air. „Well, sorry, Mom, you're 67, no one lives forever.“ Average means that there are older and younger people. Some are in their 90s, 80s, 70s, but some also are far younger than that. My grandma, for example, is 93 and still pretty healthy for her age. Someone who died because of Corona in their 70s could have lived for another decade or two.
-“There's only a risk for old and sick people, I'm young and healthy so I don't care. Survival of the fittest. I still wanna go out and have fun!“ Oh, so you risk the health/life of your parents, grandparents and lots of others just because you can't keep your damn ass on the couch? Survival of the fittest, natural selection....you're lucky that intelligence and empathy don't have anything to do with it or you'd be screaming bloody murder and begging for someone to finally end your suffering already.
Btw, there are numerous cases of young people ( we're talking around age 30 here ), who never smoked, are athletic and never had any health problems.
-“Corona is the revenge for those old white people causing climate change!“ Does anyone else get the urge to slap those who seriously said that? I do. Those old white people are your and your friends' parents and grandparents! The people who worked all day to afford your lifestyle, to buy you smartphones, computers and nice clothes, put food on your table, drove you around the town, took you on vacation, spoiled your ungrateful asses! For months young people went on the streets demonstrating for change, for realization what's happening around us, for actions. And now many of them ( not all of course ) prove that all they care about is themselves and that they're not an inkling better or even much worse than the „old white people“ they see as the ultimate enemy.
-“I keep hearing about hospitals being overcrowded, that's new, never was a problem before so why is everyone locked at home now?“ You probably lived under a rock for the past years, but hospitals are understaffed everywhere. Keep in mind that there are not only Corona patients needing medical help or a bed at the intensive care unit. Think of all the other reasons why someone needs to be at the hospital. Illnesses, cancer, tumors, heart attacks, strokes, pregnancy, broken bones and the normal flu. Those don't suddenly stop because Corona showed up. If hospitals are overcrowded because of Corona patients then people who have something not Corona-related will also be in danger because if they don't get the medical help they need then they could die as well.
Imagine you or someone close to you has a car accident and there's no hospital that can give the help which is needed, resulting in death. Taking the situation more serious now? China didn't quickly build 16 emergency hospitals just for fun.
There's probably more I wanted to mention, but I guess this journal is long enough already. To anyone who read it, thank you. Please feel free to use this against everyone who still doesn't take this situation seriously.
Be safe, everyone. We're in this together. *virtual hugs*

Hello from the plague-ridden city of Boston! I wish first reassure everyone that I am fine. I am at no particular risk of catching the novel coronavirus, and if I somehow defy the odds and come down with COVID-19, I am mainly in danger of spending a couple of weeks with a really shitty cough. The hospitalization pattern for this thing is a lot like that of the seasonal flu -- the very old, the immunosuppressed, and those with restricted lung function, otherwise known collectively as 'people who get pneumonia a lot' -- with the interesting twist that, much like varicella zoster, young kids seem to be much less affected. The COVID-19 experience according to both CDC graphs and trip reports from redditors who have tested positive for it is that otherwise healthy people who aren't super old and fragile get to sit through the flu. I did that back in November with the regular rogues gallery of viruses and am not eager to do it again, but at this point I have better odds of landing myself in the hospital by slipping in the shower. On the other hand, I live with someone who has Crohn's and is on immunosuppressive medications, and someone else who has been having mystery medical problems for the past couple of years, involving but not limited to shortness of breath unresolved by asthma inhalers. So my role in this pandemic is to wash my hands a lot and protect the more vulnerable members of the herd. As of yesterday all of my in-person jobs have canceled themselves, and I am consequently stuck at home not sick for the next couple weeks at least. As of this writing, Boston is not officially on lockdown. No one's bolted inside the house, the shops are open and we can all go out and get stuff unfettered. The governor has declared a State of Emergency, mostly so they can access the extra funds and enforce a quarantine on people who have actually been exposed to the virus. Everyone lost their shit for about a day and a half and went out to buy toilet paper like it was about to be illegal. Then we calmed down a tick and realized the situation was less "T-Virus outbreak" and more "influenza++ bonus level". You don't need to hermetically seal yourself inside the house, just, like, don't go to any parties. Or hold a leadership conference, like the fuckwickets at BioGen. Those particular arrogant motherfuckers are directly responsible for most of the chaos here, since they're in an industry that's centered in the same part of town as most of the big universities, which are now either running classes online, or shut down completely. It's quiet but not dead outside. The weirdest part is actually seeing this happen in pleasant spring weather. Every other time I've lived through this, it's been because the National Weather Service has given us a couple days' warning that we're about to be on a first-name basis with a fuck-off huge storm. Although it is interesting to see how many people don't really know how detergents work. They seem to think "hand soap" is some sort of magical virus-killing substance and freak the fuck out at the empty shelves, when there is an entire aisle full of shampoo, body wash, and facial cleanser two feet to their left. It's all based on sodium laureth sulfate, guys; just pick the bottle that smells the best and go on with your day. Most of the anxiety is, as usual, caused by ignorance. Not just in the sense that people don't know a lot of things, but also that we can't know some of it until more time has passed. The R0 ("r-naught", basic rate of reproduction, or the average number of people infected by a contagious carrier) of coronavirus is 2 and a bit, which is worse than most varieties of influenza (1-2) but way better than shit like measels (10+), AIDS (2-5), bane of my childhood chickenpox (3-5), or the classic poliovirus from back in the day (5-7). The mortality rate is being reported as up to 3.4% (as figured using only confirmed cases), but postulated as more like 1% (as estimated by the CDC), which is about ten times seasonal flu, but way the fuck under other university-closing favorites like community-acquired meningitis, which runs right around 20%. All of these numbers are to be taken with a small boulder of salt. The problem is that all of the math you use to get them depends on having an accurate count of cases, which we do not. It's becoming increasingly clear that Novel Coronavirus 2019, like other things in the coronavirus class, can cause symptoms that range really widely in severity. You might get a week of fever and coughing, you might get viral pneumonia and die. The majority of people who catch this coronavirus will probably never see a doctor; they just stay home and swill NyQuil like they would with any other cold. The official count, by definition, includes only people who come to the attention of those doing the counting. Which, in the beginning stages, is restricted to those with symptoms severe enough to require medical treatment. In other words, odds are that COVID-19 is a lot more widespread than we think, but also a lot less dangerous to most people. This is not to say we shouldn't do anything about it. Most kids didn't die of measles, either. I find the graphs of mortality rate by age to be particularly intriguing. The absolute rates are basically zero for small children, don't go up by any interesting amount through the 50s (that is, a lot of the increase could be attributed to people picking up confounding factors, like pulmonary damage from other illnesses or smoking, or progression of other co-morbid conditions), and then shoot way the fuck up for 60+. I've seen the hypothesis floated that kids don't suffer much because their immune systems aren't primed for this thing and don't react too strongly. Which raises the question of whether people in the 60+ category are dying at much higher rates as an artifact of the math (i.e., small sample size of elderly cases combined with the general fragility of age might cause an artificial jump in rates), or because they were exposed to something in their youth which the younger generation were not that has prompted their immune systems to over-respond with inflammation, thus raising their odds of developing severe hyperthermia and pneumonia. Anyway. I'm going to be bored as fuck and bereft of income for the next few weeks, so expect to see a lot of drivel here. I think the personal things are mainly going to go on Patreon, seeing as I have to do something for money while all the theaters are shut down, but I'll try to also finish a lot of half-complete things and dump them here, so y'all have something to read. from Blogger https://ift.tt/3aWjSgl via IFTTT -------------------- Enjoy my writing? Bad Things Happen Bingo! The event where you send me requests according to this marvelous card!
Despite its apparently anonimity, this request was actually made by a friend of mine who I put in a IoTsu mood, so of course I had to provide lmao. It’s perfect too, because 1. the association was fuckin’ spot-on 2. I’m always a fuckin’ slut for IoTsumu 3. it’s allowing me to fill an entire line, which is also pretty swell. Today’s been such a good day!
Also: yes, this is my Takanashi Residence AU again, woops.
Remembering to Rest
Summary: Tsumugi's workaholic tendencies often bring her to the land of headaches, something she's used to. She's also used to the boys making it much better by caring for her whenever she does that. Today, it seems like it's both Iori and her turn to care for the other's head problems.
Fandom: IDOLiSH7 Ships: IoTsumu (Iori/Tsumugi)
Wordcount: 1.7K words
Event hosted by @badthingshappenbingo
AO3 version available here.
It was a widespread fact that Tsumugi, the local “manager” of the residence, was a workaholic young woman who could spend days in paperwork and barely emerge when someone would enter her study with food she’d have forgotten to even think about getting into her systems. That was how things were: her fellow residents would easily get worried for her to indulge in so much work and that intensely, but she didn’t mind. It was part of the course, in a way.
Still, she never refused any help from anyone. She knew Mitsuki’d always insist to give her food during her long afternoons of paperwork, that Sogo was the kind to check on her often to make sure she wasn’t completely drowning, that Tamaki would usually let one of his puddings near her so she’d eat it between two folders. All the boys had a way to show they cared, something that’d never stop warming her heart. Feeling loved was always nice.
She had been drowning in paperwork for a while, there. She was just seeing the end of the tunnel, and despite the rests she’d take and the full nights of sleep she enjoyed more and more getting despite the frustration of knowing she could have spent that time on something more urgent. She had to preserve herself.
That last statement was especially valid right now, as she rubbed her throbbing head. It was a way for her body to tell her it was time to stop and get some rest, perhaps even sleep. It was five in the afternoon: she had spent at least four hours in a row on this to take care of some important renovations for the residence’s faulty heating system.
A knock on the door was what definitely broke her out of her trance.
“Yes?” she said, trying to sound as peppy and warm as she possibly could as her hands stumbled upon the loose sheets on the desk for the goodness that was her headache pills.
A familiar face entered the room with a tray in his hands, silver eyes looking right at her. There was a steaming mug and a plate of cookies on it.
“Ah, hello, Iori!” she took again her peppy voice to greet him. “How are you?”
“I’m doing just fine,” he said as he put the tray on her desk, right where there were no paper sheets.
However, there was something in his voice that was telling her he wasn’t as fine as he was saying he was.
“Let me ask you the question back, Takanashi.”
“Oh, huh… You know, a bit tired because of all the work I’ve done lately, but nothing too bad! I’ll just have a very nice night of sleep after this, it’s almost done anyway… Dad’s not able to take care of it because he’s stuck in bed with the flu, so I’m taking care of it for him.”
Tsumugi smiled softly as she looked at the tray’s insides.
“Thank you for this, by the way, Iori. It’s very nice of you.”
He blushed and looked aside, clearing his throat before replying.
“I’m just here because the others I’ve sent me,” he said in that “lying voice” of his as Mitsuki would have called it. “The cookies have been baked by my brother, so you’ll have to thank him later!
“Will do! What about this hot chocolate, though?”
The smell of it was delicious, almost appetizing, despite her latest snack having been so little time ago.
“I’ve made it.”
“You do care, don’t you?”
The blushing on his face increased.
“It… It’d be rather mean-spirited not to.”
Her eyes fluttered on the tray as she picked up the cup, noticing something she hadn’t seen before.
“Are these headache pills?”
“Yes. I’d have figured you’d end up in that situation one way or the other, since you’re a terrible workaholic at times.”
Feeling embarrassed and judged all the same, she tried to strike back as she took one of the pills with a gulp of milk.
“It’s funny, we’re kind of the same there, Iori… You like to lock yourself in your flat to study often!”
He rolled his eyes.
“Just take these pills and some rest, even if you don’t sleep. You’ll write stupidities on these papers if you overwork yourself, and it’ll make all of us look like fools.”
She whispered under her breath, “Sometimes I wish you weren’t be that honest…”
“Oh,” she broke herself out of her embarrassed silence, “why don’t you take a seat next to me?”
She pushed some papers to make stead for a second person’s comfort, hand pointing to the chair next to her
Despite the painful feeling of her eyes hurting and her brain in overheat, Tsumugi could still notice Iori didn’t seem like he was doing much better than she did. He had a mask over the lower half of his face, reddened eyes and slightly dishevelled hair, as if he hadn’t combed it as well as he’d usually do. However, the most trying (and, honestly, most relatable) weird thing about him was his hand rubbing the bridge of his nose and middle of his forehead.
“Are you alright, Iori? Is your head hurting?” she asked in concern, almost pained to see the boy in such a poor and unusual state.
“I do have a headache, but there’s nothing you couldn’t do about it. I’m fine.”
“Oh, and… why do you have this mask? Is there an epidemic I should be aware of?”
“Not really, even if Yotsuba has the flu and I think Osaka is about to catch it too if he’s not more careful…”
“So you’re really, really not the one who’s sick?”
Tsumugi had learnt how to bypass Iori’s initial brushing off and coldness by targeting directly what she thought was happening and going through his mind. At times, he’d just bust her out immediately, but it costed nothing to try.
“Why do you want to know that so much? I guess I can’t hide anything from you again…”
“I’m not asking this to tease you, don’t take it so badly, please… I’m just worried for a friend! Do you know what you have?”
“Sinusitis. Nothing too bad, but not something I’d have wanted to contract in the first place. It’ll go away in a few days. I apologize if my voice sounds weird because of it.”
Slowly and softly, she put her hand on his forehead, to which he hissed but still somewhat leaned in.
“You’re running a fever, but that should have been obvious…”
“I told you, I’m going to be fine, I’m not a little child. My brother’s already fretting over me enough, I don’t need you to do that too.”
“We’re just worried, Iori! It’s normal for people to get worried, wouldn’t you get concerned if any of us was sick? You were already concerned for me because I’ve been working a lot on my own to make everything fine.”
He groaned as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
“What’s wrong?” escaped her lips as she retained her hands from immediately jerking in panic.
“That… thing’s getting to my nerves from behind my eyes… If you want an honest answer, all I can say it’s that you’re not the only one to have a raging headache. So, please, don’t add anything on top of it with your fretting.”
The more she looked at him, the less her own head was throbbing, as if the feeling had been drained by her thoughts. Worry kept bubbling in her stomach, almost forming a knot.
“I should get going,” he spoke up as he rose from the chair, albeit not with swaying on his feet before finding his balance. “It’s getting late and I still have some homework to do.”
That was horrifying, seeing him being so out of it and yet trying to sound determined with that congested, hoarse voice of his.
“Wait, you’re attending class in that condition?! You’re going to make it worse, Iori! You should be resting!”
The boy scoffed back, before muffling a cough in his sleeve.
“I know. Don’t you think the doctor told me that already?”
“Then… Why do you do that? You know it’s bad for you, right?”
“For the same reason you keep working even with a headache, Takanashi.”
To that she blinked in surprise, before bobbing her head now.
“I… I see what you’re saying, but…” She rose her eyes again, the lingering headache still raging down her neck. “Shouldn’t you know better than me? I think you said that once!”
“That was when you worked yourself to a fever and Rokuya found you unconscious on the floor, thus waking everyone up early in the morning because he had finished binge-watching the latest season of some cartoon. I’m fairly certain I know… better than that…”
He swayed again on his feet, before she jumped out of her chair and caught him.
“Iori, I insist, you’re really warm! You need to rest instead of teasing me!”
His face lost all its colours, almost as if he was giving up on something.
“You know what…? You’re right…”
A smile couldn’t help but appear on her mouth.
“Here, let’s bring you back to your place and both rest. I promise I’ll do that once I’m sure you’ll do it.”
She got a rare smile back.
“If that’ll make you stop… Then it’s a deal…”
Steadily, yet slowly, making their way out of the office and to the first floor on the ground floor, she could only notice how warm she felt, heart beating against her chest. She didn’t enjoy having to manhandle Iori like that, as if he was a chiffon doll, but she’d have lied if she said she didn’t enjoy being able to help him and, in a way, pay him back for all he had done for her by helping her with management and getting others’ opinions.
That and, of course, there was something special to being able to watch over someone she cared for. Sleeping off the headache was tempting, but it was even more tempting if she was near him. Silently making a note to Google for solutions to make his nose feel fine again, she made her way to the room.

Air Travel Tips - How to stay healthy for a long airplane flight
Air Travel Tips - How to stay healthy for a long airplane flight
Summer is the traveling season. Most long-distance travel happens around this time when kids are having summer break and the weather is nice and warm. The downside is the long air flights confined in a small space with a crowd, not so fresh air, and not so tasty food. Here we have some tips to help you be prepared and stay healthy.
The common sense tips
1. Drink a lot of water because the air can be very drying. When you are dehydrated, you get sick easily. Most drinks offered in the airplane are not too healthy for you such as juice (too much sugar), soda (high fructose corn syrup), coffee, or alcohol. A little bit is fine to uplift your mood, but water is the best!
2. Sleep as much as possible. If you can fall asleep, the trip will seem less long and more tolerable. Your body gets the rest and you will have more energy when you arrive too.
3. Eat less of the airplane food. When I travel between Taiwan and the US, they always offer 3 full meals. When we still try to adjust the 12 hour time difference, we really do not need the extra food and calory. Eating in a bumpy airplane is not the best for digestion. And most food on the plane is stored for a while and does not taste good anyway. I always feel better if I skip one or two meals, or just eat very lightly. And skip the ice cream or chocolate cake that comes with it.
You can bring some healthy snack in case you get hungry. Some nuts and seeds, fresh bread, or even sushi. This is not a good time to party and eat junk food. Be strict with what you eat.
4. Stay warm and comfortable. It often gets very cold with the air conditioner in the plane. Bring socks and jacket or sweater that doubles as a blanket. Some people like to bring a travel pillow and eye mask for a more comfortable sleep.
5. Hydrate the skin. Since the air gets dry and cold, your skin and face will become dry too. Reapply some moisturizer and lip balm. Some people like to apply sheet mask on the plane. It is like a spa treatment. It might look strange but it does help with drying skin.
Chinese medicine wellness tips
1. If you tend to get the car or air-sickness, prepare some ginger slices and you can chew some on the plane to fight the nauseous feeling.
2. Acupressure for air-sickness or motion sickness - Large Intense 4 (LI 4, or HE GU point) is between your thumb and index finger, near the bone joint on the back of your hand.
The other popular point is the Pericardium 6 (PC 6, or NEI GUAN point), located 3 finger width below your wrist line, in the center between the 2 tendons. See picture below.
Press these 2 points with your finger can relieve some nauseous and dizzy feeling.
3. Before the trip, you can take some "Yin Qiao San" powder. It is a patent herbal formula for cold or flu that is from the external weather change. It can act as a preventive medicine to increase your immune system so you don't get sick easily during the trip.
That is all our tips for surviving long air flight. Eat light, sleep well, stay hydrated, and find something to keep occupied such as a movie or book. Try to keep the same schedule and avoid any extreme changes (diet, sleep hour and so on). Now you are prepared so just relax and enjoy your trip.

HOW TO AVOID ILLNESS DURING HOLIDAY TRAVEL
Tumblr media
If the holiday break means vacation time, it also means flu season. While winter is the perfect time to sip some hot cocoa and read a good book, it’s also is the season to get sick with a common cold.
Of course you want to avoid all these nasty germs! After all, you and your family are ready to enjoy the long-awaited trip and definitely not the flu virus!
Unfortunately, germs are everywhere during these cold winter months, especially when the family is traveling. That passenger next to you could be coughing or sneezing, and you dread whatever sickness they may be spreading.
Germs on Planes
One study published by the Wall Street Journal confirmed that germs lurk on airplanes. The article stated that the risk for catching a cold could be as high as 20%. The holidays aren’t just the happiest time of the year, but it is also the most contagious time. Airplanes are packed with families who are constantly traveling from one place to another.
On October 8, 2008, a group of people who were part of a tour group started to vomit and felt symptoms of diarrhea throughout the course of their flight from Boston to Los Angeles. The plane had to do an emergency landing and assess the cause of this incident. It was later discovered that it was a norovirus outbreak that caused the commotion … and it occurred on the airplane.
How To Avoid Getting Sick?
The transmission of norovirus could still happen, even on short flights. And a passenger onboard the same aircraft could be suffering with cough, cold, or flu. However, there’s no need to panic; you can avoid getting sick.
In this blog post, I will share seven ways suggested by medical experts to avoid germs while traveling.
Rule number 1: Avoid public restrooms if you can.
If you can, refrain from using the aircraft cubicle and be especially mindful of germ-laden spots in airport lavatories. Dr. Marina Gafanovich, a New York-based doctor, emphasized that many people use the public bathroom in airports and on board planes, and germs lurk on the sinks, toilet seats, and flush handles. Be sure to use paper towels when you are touching these things.
Rule number 2: Wash your hands.
Remember to always keep your hands clean. Dr. Nicholas Testa, a Southern California-based doctor, stressed that frequent hand washing is crucial in preventing sickness. Wash your hands as often as you can, especially when you are traveling. Remind the kids to keep their hands clean by using soap and running water.
Rule number 3: Always have a hand sanitizer ready.
If there isn’t a wash area or there is no clean water around, it’s useful to have a hand sanitizer with you. Washing your hands would be best, but, sometimes, you are not near a sink. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer would be a great alternative. The Centers for Disease Control recommend getting a sanitizer with 60% to 95% alcohol content. alcohol-based products are better at killing germs than those hand sanitizers without any alcohol in it. Alcohol-based products are better at killing germs than hand sanitizers without.
No need for you to have all the fun. Make sure your kids carry their own sanitizer inside their bags. And remind them to use it!
Rule number 4: Hands off!
If you haven’t heeded rules number 2 and 3, then do not touch your face by any means. Keep the germs away from your face. Germs love to infect you through the nose, mouth, and eyes.
Always remind your kids to not put their hands in their mouths or to pick their noses. That will surely speed up the transmissions of germs! Moreover, train your kids to never rub their eyes or touch their faces, especially when they haven’t cleaned their hands.
Rule number 5: Avoid using certain amenities.
Aside from keeping your hands clean at all times, it is best to not touch certain areas of the plane. There are areas that are infrequently cleaned, such as the tray tables and seat pockets. Remember, the flu virus can stay on any surface for a full day.
Having said that, keep your kids’ snacks in resealable bags so they won’t have to use the tray table. They will just open their bags of snacks and close them back up when they are done eating. If they are going to eat a full meal, be sure to clean the trays by using antiseptic wet wipes.
Additionally, don’t store your kids’ toys and feeding bottles in the seat pocket. Many people use them, so these pockets are probably riddled with viruses and germs.
Rule number 6: Select a window seat.
Dr. Testa says that a window seat is a better choice because it does not have contact with the majority of passengers. The thing is … most people hold on to the aisle seats when moving around the plane. That means these aisle seats are more likely to be contaminated, and touching them makes you and your kids more susceptible to infections.
Rule number 7: Switch on the air vent.
One might think that the recycled air from the vents will make you sick. The truth is that the air vent can actually help you. The overhead air vent can serve as your own personal shield and protection from nasty airborne germs. The airflow will block foreign elements from getting close to you and your children.
Prepare Before Your Scheduled Flight!
So, before you and your family start your much-awaited adventure together, be sure to arm yourselves with weapons against viruses. Dr. Testa advises everyone to take probiotics in order to increase good bacteria in the gut. It is also advisable to take vitamins with added zinc. Lastly, before your travel, be sure your vaccinations are up to date.
If you want to be extra careful during travel, you could always wear a mask. Most viruses are spread through the air, so it is best to have a mask ready especially when you are visiting crowded areas.
According to an article posted by the Centers for Disease Control, getting an N95 face mask will be useful in filtering at least 95% of airborne particles.

Don’t drink water unless…
You want to receive all the advantages of drinking water! =) There are a ton benefits of drinking lots of water. I Don’t Mean Just A few Sips out of your Water bottle, you have to have the right amount for your Daily Water Intake.
To Achieve All Of the Benefits below… what is the Amount of Water you SHOULD drink?!
For Women, they suggest 9 cups of water each day, which is a little over 2 liters! Now, if you are more active, workout daily, out in the sun/warm weather, you are definitely going to want to drink even more than that! For men it is about 13 cups, but same rules apply to them depending on how much activity they have through the day.  A construction worker will need more water than a Man with a sedentary job at a Desk.
So Lets get to SOME of the Benefits of Drinking water over sugary drinks  will give you ↓
  Weight Loss | Weight Management
Water Helps with  the removal of fat by-products, also water helps you feel Full for Longer! Not only does this act as a natural appetite suppressant, but it also Gives your metabolism a Jump to speed up. Definitely try to consume water first thing in the morning instead of any other sugary beverage!
Bye Bye Toxins |
Flush Out Toxins Drinking Water  helps your body flush out waste through sweat and urination, which  also prevents kidney stones and can protects you from urinary tract infections.
Don’t be Constipated…
Maintains Regularity with drinking enough water. Water  Really helps your body digest all the food  you eat! If you Want a  healthy digestive system, drinking water is a MUST!
Prevents Headaches | Helps Headaches
Drinking water also helps prevent and relieve headaches. On Busy Days, I sometimes forget to Drink as much water as I Need. Increases Brain Power and helps keep your Energy high. Your brain is  actually made of about  73% water, drinking it helps you think, focus, concentrate, and stay alert.  This kind of relates to water preventing headache, to help your Mind stay clear and focused.
Boosts Immune System
One of the  easiest way to stay healthy during the cold and flu season is to  Drink more water! Or if your already sick, double, triple, get AS MUCH water in as possible to help pass the sickness faster! Water is a great way to help make your immune systems stronger!

Our Hair THRIVES with the right Nutrition/Vitamins and WATER. Just like our skin, the hair wants to be in a  moisture-rich environment. Lack of water can make our hair very brittle and dry, which then in returns can halt our normal rate of hair growth!
