All the emotions are coming to a head...
Surprise
Disgust
Sadness
Anger
Fear
Embarrassment
Hostility
Frustration
UGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!
As an African American woman, a mother, an aunt, a cousin, a friend give us room to EXHALE and experience every single one of these emotions. It is bringing back memories of various experiences and YET AGAIN we are trying to process injustice and racism. I have friends and colleagues of every nationality, always have. I take pride in that as I was not raised to see color. Nonetheless I'm noticing deafening silence, passive aggressive response as well as the painfully beautiful support. It is all being recognized!!! It is heightening my discernment of people, of circumstances and showing me how to use more wisdom moving forward.
Give our community space to feel and respond in whatever manner they know how, please!

It is really messed up to think something that occurred back in 2019 wants to rear it's head in 2021.
So, I was hired by The Skin and Makeup Institute a few years ago. I created a curriculum to instruct as their Makeup Program (the coursework is 100% my own). Each class I had success, I have even brought my past students on to jobs or provided them references for other opportunities. Additionally, with each class there were off campus events so that the students could have a real picture as to networking and/or experiences. The last class had four young ladies and I was under the impression everything was going well. The students were supposed to meet me at an event so that they could get a true hands on experience. I even had former graduates in attendance which I recall making mention of when informing them. When they didn't show up, I was concerned but figured something happened, little did I know! I get to the school that evening and see no cars in the lot. Before entering, I call the Owner, Jackie. I'm told over the phone that I cannot get into the school and that I no longer have a job. I'm not expecting any of this of course but she proceeded to tell me she had a meeting with the students and they felt like they weren't learning anything, that they are all unhappy and want their money back. She proceeded to let me know they didn't think that I'm a good instructor and that I can't take students on off campus outings. Mind you I've done the exact same for every single class, curriculum the exact same, received stellar reviews from my other students. Yes, I was bothered by this because we were getting close to the time when the class would be up but still had a few weeks left. This happened in October 2019 fast forward till today, this screenshot is posted on my Instagram. It's from one of the students from that last class of four. I haven't heard one word since 2019 but I'm sought out on social media?! Let me say this, I don't hide behind a screen. Anything I say online can be said in person!
Tumblr media
When all this occurred I tried to call the students that day. I absolutely wanted to let them know if they weren't satisfied they could've said so to me directly and I absolutely would've been willing to make adjustments. Nonetheless, I was told by the Owner of the school that she instructed them not to respond to me and I shouldn't be contacting them. She asked me to leave my key under a rock in the back of the school which I did. Did I see this coming? Nope, completely blindsided. Mind you, I've witnessed how the Owner spoke poorly of the Makeup Instructor before me so I guess I should've saw this coming. Yet and still, I enjoyed my experiences with all the students I encountered. I never want anyone to have a poor experience with me, you can ask ANYONE who has worked with me, for me or I've taught or mentored. I even had a conversation with a peer immediately after this occurred and stated I wish I could just talk to the students and let them know I'm here for anything regardless. So to say I belittled or discredited someone who was a student is absolutely false. I've never said anything negative about any of the students I've had, ever!
Clearly the missing link here is someone is in there feelings. It makes a bit more sense why the Owner was so adamant I not reach out to them further. Perhaps I would have discovered I was lied on or perhaps this is truly how they felt. So, whomever is still watching my social media pages and feels uneasy, you clearly know how to reach me and can contact me if you want to talk in person. I'm always about my business. I don't need anyone to speak for me; when I'm wrong I can say I'm wrong, when I'm not I can say that too.
Moral of the story: This is how you address something publicly with tact!

A MOMENT OF CLARITY:
According to SCORE & US Census, black-owned businesses in the United States increased by 34.5% between 2007 and 2012 totaling 2.6 million. More than 95% of these businesses are mostly sole proprietorship or partnerships which have no paid employees. It is safe to say that number has probably doubled in the last eight years.
As an African-American woman, an entrepreneur, and a beauty pro, I have to fight a great deal harder to have my voice heard amidst a sea of other creatives. People overlook the work that you put immense amounts of effort in just to share the next person's work based on their following or how much more marketable they believe it could be. It would be helpful to change that narrative and allow other creatives to feel like their work is good enough to be seen in all spaces and not just spaces where the faces look like their own.
I am seeing fellow business owners who are not black jumping on the bandwagon but not offering real support because you are still talking about "all lives" and "looters". I am seeing brands that I have used over the years fumble with putting out press releases. There is a small silver lining of brands and business owners who are truly trying to help. Be real about the change in which you claim to seek!
You know how many times I have entered spaces and have had to curb my voice, watch my tone, be aware of how I look, etc??!! You know how many times people have taken credit for my work or taken my ideas and ran away with them as their own? You know how many times I have been looked down upon by others in the industries where I worked, it didn't matter if it was HR, Beauty, or Small Business!
I am not proving my blackness to you, I am not proving my worth, I am not proving my value ANYMORE. I will not so what you will see now more than ever is this:
I will FIGHT to make sure my voice be heard, my work is seen and my expertise is respected!!!! Anything less than that is unacceptable, period point-blank!

As a Licensed Beauty Professional I enjoy working on set with the many talented people who bring the production to life. In addition, I pride myself on working with all skin tones, skin types and hair textures. It is past time we bridge the divide and hire more men and women of color. Why is this important? The rate of Caucasians hired in entertainment ranges from 2 to 1 through 4 to 1 depending on the role. That's crazy!!!!!
🤍🤍🤍
I'm glad I get to work with people who consider me top of mind. I'm the first person they call when they have a project. That means a great deal to me. This candid is one of those times and will be a forever memory. I can say that I was the Key Makeup Artist for a short film that featured Loretta Devine.

Have you begun setting goals for 2021 yet??!!
It's September 1st and yes the pandemic has monopolized all of 2020 but it's time to look towards the future.
S – Specific – you need to have a detailed end result in mind.
M – Measurable – you need to specify numbers.
A – Attainable – it needs to be something you can acheive (yet, still a challenge).
R – Relevant – they need to be relevant to your business.
T – Time Based – you need to have a deadline in mind.
#tuesdaymotivation #tuesdaytip
Write your goals down & ensure they’re smart!

#TuesdayTip
Do you believe in authenticity??
🤔
As a small business owner and creative this is important to me. So much so it affects the way I operate because integrity means a lot to me. As such when building your brand it should ultimately be a reflection of you especially if it is something in which you are passionate. Each of the branches within my business is authentic to me. I'm not going to brand myself in a manner that doesn't align with my values. We get so caught up in what we see other people doing we forget about who we are and what our end goal should be.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'm very excited to be educating at Premiere Orlando this weekend where I'll be speaking about this in more depth. For the first time I'm conducting a class outside the realm of beauty and wearing my business hat. If you are attending mark your calendars for Sunday at 1:00pm in room W221A "Creating Content that Represents YOU"
