NEW TO PRE-ORDER
Hi
Hope all is good. We've just dropped 6 new releases, available to pre-order now
1) DANIEL JACK McCLENNAN 'Thou Canst Turn Thy Organ While I Sing Of Woe'
Poignant emotional minimalist advant-garde solo piano from Warren Schoenbright / Why Patterns member.
2) HYPNODRONE 'The Problem Is The Sender - Do Not Tamper With The Receiver'
Propulsive motorik krautrock spaced-out shoegaze pysch from the Aidan Baker / Eric Quach collective, captured as a 60-minute immersive transportive aural experience
3) MICHAL GUTMAN 'Never Coming Home'
Debut solo album from the multi-instrumentalist. A patchwork of harmony and disharmony, flaying between a theatrical, vicious cabaret, a storyline told on an 80’s club dance floor, or a dreamy soundtrack.
RIYL: Kristen Hersh, PJ Harvey
4) TODESKINO 'Black Patina'
Atari and Amiga generated sweet pop ambient; glitchy, beat-collapsing IDM meet quirky, intricate melodies, Blade Runner-esque synth pads, synthesized computer voices and technoid beats. A computational delight.
5) CRUSHTRASH x NICHOLAS LANGLEY 'Prosthetic Self'
Early '80s dark industrial synth pop meets the mesmerising allure of '90s electronica. RIYL: Coil, The Associates, Depeche Mode, Björk, Portishead, David Sylvian.
6) melondruie 'A Storm Is Coming'
Atmospheric synth-heavy ambience, emotionally charged and designed to take the listener on a journey through an inner world of thoughts and feelings swirling around like the wind ahead of a storm.

i'm listening to pretty. odd. 👀 was it by any chance influenced by the beatles as well? their experimental era specifically because this is giving peak psychedelic rock and i LOVE it
YESSS!!! The Beatles and the Beach Boys seems to be the biggest influences on the album. The band talked a lot about taking influence from music from the 60's and 70's, naming the Kinks, the Plastic Ono band and Danny Elfman's composition works as influences. So it comes across as a mix of pysch rock and contemporary classical music.

recieved a writeup on MERLIN sent in by a music fan making some corrections to our reviews on Merlin here, we posted it below the other writeup sent in in 2006,
MERLIN
GREAT lp this band put out in '74, lots of variety and allthough it's along the lines of SLADE, and SWEET, the 1st 3 songs are different from the rest of the lp......
'SPACE RAIDER'
offbeat synth rocker , sci-fi prog element up front, listening closely it reminded us of the same beat of DEVO's 'SPEED RACER' that came out yrs later in '82, for a few seconds u can hear the background singers in MERLIN going 'ha, ha, ha , ha'.....very similiar to DEVO's 'PEEK-A-BOO' from that same lp.......i wonder if DEVO ever heard this song cause listening at first you'll notice this, however the band were not at all like DEVO in any way we just wanted to make this apparent....some lyrics; 'I SAID I MADE TRACKS IN HIS FACE, NEEDED SPACE TO FILL A HOLE I HOPED THAT I WOULD, FIND A PLACE, A PLACE TO CALL MY HOME'
' TAKING PART '
again this too is different from the rest of the lp, sounds like a cross between the MOODY BLUES and RUSH...guitar melody begins ' LIKE A CEASAR BALL, BUT THEY SEEM MORE HERE THAN ME, FOR ALL THE WORLD AND ALL IT's UNEXPECTED COMPANY', and 'TAKING PART, TAKING PART OF THE UNIVERSE, MAKE A START , AS TIME GETS CLOSE TO US, WE RUN OUT OF SIGHT......
'GETTING INVOLVED'
this one is gentle folk-pysch similiar to what maybe PINK FLOYD did in the late 60's.........'WERE GETTING INVOLVED LIKE A MYSTREY UNSOLVED , HOW'D YOU THINK IT WOULD END, BUT QUITE OF THE TIME I BEEN SEEING THE SIGNS, YOUR MORE TO ME THAN JUST A FRIEND
'GYPSY'
GOOD strong hard glam number, along the lines of SLADE or GEORDIE, they're trying for the 'so bad it's good sound'........elec guitar solo in the middle.....' I NEVER KNOWN A CHICK LIKE THIS SHE GOES WILD FOR JUST 1 KISS, NEVER KNOWN YOUR KIND BEFORE WHEN IT COMES TO LOVE SHE WANTS MORE, MORE, MORE, GYPSY, GYPSY WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO' ?
' HE THINKS ABOUT YOU ALL THE TIME'
SLADE-like good time pop rock........unique synths..kinda has the beat from the GRATEFUL DEAD's 'ROLL AWAY THE DOOB'...some lyrics -..'HE NEVER REALLY GOT OVER U, YOUR MEMORY STAYS ON HIS MIND, HE SAID HE'D LIKE TO SEE U JUST WON'T COME AROUND', and ' HE THINKS ABOUT U ALL THE TIME, CAUSE HE's STILL A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE'....
'LOOK AT LIFE'
GREAT BALLAD ! this lps very BEST number !!.....begins with a slow piano into a pure SPARKS pop song or to be more precise they sound a lot like MR. BIG ( see below).....'I STEPPED OUTSIDE AND A WHITE LIGHT HIT ME ON A CLEAR LOS ANGELES DAY'...and .....'WHAT A FUNNY WAY TO FALL IN LOVE'....and 'ISN'T IT STRANGE THAT NOTHING MORE THAN A SMILE COULD CHANGE THE WORLD' ??? ends with guitar wailing, this song itself is enough to buy the lp, but side 2 has many other GREAT ones too......but about this song ya know after hearing it a lot or a few yrs later in our case it reminded us of a funny kinda pop number, a really beautiful pop number with a funny guitar riff that they pick up on and carry all the way to the end and the singer is asking you to look i mean really LOOK at life.......this song is so good is could have shoulda been at the top of one of those K-TEL or Ronco 70s pop compilations......the band did have some other single releases we've been told but one wonders if they ever topped this song ?
Tumblr media
'MARLINA'
GREAT opener ! SWEET-like rock, u notice that after the beginning vocal intro of ' HOLD MY HAND WHILE WE'LL REACH THE SKY, DON'T LET GO WHILE YOUR FEELING HIGH'......bass chugs along just like one of SWEET's classics, elsewhere they sing 'DEEP BLUE HAIRDO', and 'TAKE ME AND SHOW ME WHERE U ARE'.......
'SWEET CHEATIN' RITA'
'SHE's MY SWEET CHEATIN RITA, AND I KNOW HOW MUCH U NEED HER, MY CHEATIN' RITA' ! ........thats right the ALVIN STARDUST glitter classic is covered here surprisingly, and they do a GREAT job too !....( to see reviews of ALVIN's lps, see page 5 )......we were later told that MERLIN did the original and Alvin covered it the next year in '75....
'ALLRIGHT'
GOOD NODDY HOLDER imiatation on this number with elec guitar and elec piano, campy sounds abound........ 'ALLRIGHT YOUR DADDY DON'T MIND, YOUR MOTHER DON'T MIND, YOUR SISTER DON'T MIND, ......ALLRIGHT YOUR TEACHER DON'T DIG, YOUR PREACHER DON'T DIG', and 'ARE U READY FOR ME AND MY BIG BIRD, SHOOT EM' UP' !........plus horns in the middle along with car racing sounds, in '74 u oculd find camp on almost any glam lp...
'LET ME PUT MY SPELL ON U'
...melodic glam pop rock similiar to SLADE.......'CAN'T U FEEL THE MAGIC VIBES ELCTRIC FIRE', and ONE LITTLE SPARK LEADS TO A FIRE, COME ON COME ON U KNOW U CAN TAKE ME, LET ME PUT MY SPELL ON U .......
'WILD CAT'
....the band has a GREAT closer, solid beat, EXCELLENT STONES-like guitar work ,SLADE sound however more like T.REX glam rock style...... 'HEY BABY DRESSED IN BLACK, COME ON WILD CAT AND SCRATCH MY BACK, OVER HERE AND LET ME LOVE U', and 'CAUSE IT AIN'T RIGHT LETTING U GO'.....( fades)

WRITEUP on Merlin sent in early April '06....
Merlin included vocalist Alan Love, guitarist Jamie Moses, keyboard player Bob Webb, bassist Paul Taylor, and drummer Dave Whitwhick.
Merlin arose from a band called Madrigal in late 1973. Madrigal had been on the scene since 1967, but only drummer Dave Whitwhick remained from the original lineup. Jamie Moses and Bob Webb joined Madrigal in 1973,and singer Alan Love joined soon afterward (he was previously with the psych band Opal Butterfly).
( see page 2 for reviews of Opal Butterfly )
With mostly new members a name change was in order, so on the way to a gig Webb came up with the name Merlin.
Merlin released a self-titled album on CBS in 1974 (UK CBS 80338). The group released a handful of singles, with two reaching the top twenty:
Put My Spell On You / Just Another Fish On My Hook (UK CBS 2146) Alright / Pictures In My Mind (UK CBS 2421) Wild Cat / Only Half a Man (UK CBS 2790) What a Funny Way To Fall In Love / Rock and Roll Express (UK CBS 3021)
NOTE: There were several Merlins around at the same time, so any other Merlin singles you might see are by different bands (I've confirmed this with Jamie Moses). The first three singles are taken from the LP, but have non-LP B sides. The fourth single is non LP and is rare as hell - the A side is lame, but the B side - Rock and Roll Express - is a KILLER glam track.
Merlin supported David Essex on an extensive tour in 1974, with Gary Strange (ex-March Hare) replacing Paul Taylor on bass. The group disbanded not long afterward.
Jamie Moses and Bob Webb would go on to join Royce, a band that featuring singer Nigel Benjamin just before he joined Mott.
Jamie Moses is now a member of the Brian May Band, and is currently touring as second guitarist on the Paul Rodgers and Queen tour.

2nd writeup on the band sent in Jan 2010 by a fan
Hi, I recently came across your site reviewing the self titled Merlin LP. I thought i'd send across a couple of points for addition. It is stated that Sweet Cheatin Rita was an Alvin Stardust cover. Merlin actually released this a year before Alvin Stardust. Oh and Dave Whitwhick is spelt wrong. I know it is on the LP cover as that but it was actually a miss-print. It should be Dave Wightwick Also, they split on the opening night of the tour where Nigel Benjamin (Mott) was to join Merlin replacing Alan Love. Many thanks for the reviews, is great to see people have an interest. Kind Regards,
Peter

TERRA MART!! we made it.. all items in the terra mart can be purchased via the discord server however there are plans to change this to the site in the future. To begin with, the monstera bat can add a single pair of wings to your terra, the item stacks in order to allow for multiple pairs of wings, in addition to this the wings can be placed anywhere on the body, not just the back. This item comes in at a nice 50 grubs.
Hare of hearing, this item permits you to add and remove ears from your terra as some species don't have them as a default trait you may include such as bugs, amphibians and marine terras, which is reasonable considering I've never seen a bug with ears. You do need to pair with a pysch-shroom however to stack this trait. They cost 30 grubs.
Betta Brushes just allow you to add an additional colour to your terra, nothin to wild, costs 20 grubs.
Gummy eyes allow your terra to have goopy flesh or skin, but be warned you cannot use this item to remove said flesh or skin from your terra! Goopy flesh/Skin just allows for a slime like texture to be present in your terras skin. This item costs 60 grub sprouts.
Shell pot, this item allows you to add, remove or stack the following traits; horns, scales, shell, spikes/thorns or an exoskeleton, it'll run ya 25 grub sprouts to purchase one. Fur pop - another simple one, lets you add fur or feathers to terras that by default don't have fur! However, fur cannot be removed, but can be cancelled out via a shell pot to add scales. This item costs 20 grub sprouts.
Pincher potions allow for a variety of things relating to insect related terras, this being adding or removing antenna, extra limbs or mandibles. This item can be stacked in case you want a terra with 12 limbs. It also costs 40 grubs.
Horseshoe beetle permits you to add hooves to your terra! Not much else too it, it is unspecified if it also lets you remove them. This item costs 25 grub sprouts.
and there you have it, a terra mart breakdown um im gonna nap now but ill be back ive got more to say

Guns. Vagrancy. Fear of Prawns.
Has Blur's Graham Coxon lost the plot ?
NME : Aren't you a bit old for this skateboarding lark ?
"I'm probably a bit old for a lot of things I do and for lots of ways I feel. I don't think you're ever too old, contrary to what Luke Haines might think. He's far too young to be going on like he does. He said something very boring about me being as charismatic as a sick pet in a car."
What are the best and worst things about fatherhood ?
"The worst things are becoming worried about your child's safety and whether you're being a good parent. Those awful adverts on TV - 'This car is going 35mph, if it was going 30, it would've stopped here'. It's very upsetting because you immediately put your child in the position of this dummy-toddler.
"The best is when they're asleep. And now she holds out her hand so you can help her walk along. I suppose it's the things where you feel needed by them that make you happiest. I can walk down the road with her, holding her hand. She's like a little chimp but with blonde hair."
Are you squeamish ?
"I'm squeamish about seafood. I can't pull the heads off shrimps and things like that ; get me fingers all mucky in their eggs and peel the armour off. I dont like that. And there are some of those skate videos with people dropping from great heights onto their groins. There was a great one where this guy was doing a rail slide and he lands on his eye. They filmed him going to hospital and having this big vacuumy type thing washing it out then this great big syringe needle being stuck in the middle of it."
Which reality game show would you win ?
"Big Brother, easy. I'd have a guitar with me but I wouldn't fucking use it. I couldnt be arsed being on Survivor. If I cant pull the heads off shrimps, I wouldnt last a second on that. It'd be the lack of privacy I couldn't deal with, and no TV."
What would have to happen to make you move out of Camden ?
"If the river (Thames) moved north of it. Nothing against south London at all, but Camden isnt there, is it ? Or I suppose if Luke (Haines) moved there."
Who's the most fun : Sober Graham or Drunk Graham ?
"I think I'm quite fun for a while when I'm a bit drunk but often quite scary because I do get over-excited and gravitate toward speeding cars. I'm only probably more fun when I'm sober because I'm a happier person and not so flacky. I'm really badly flacky when i drink, which i really hate in others. I really love the mornings and i can only enjoy those when i'm not drinking. I get dreadful hangovers. I can't even move my eyeballs so i'm just staring at a section of the ceiling for hours with these inner hallucinations of death and insanity leaping around my pysche. I get obsessed with death and insanity."
Are you pissed off with Gorillaz becoming more popular than Blur ?
"No i'm not, although i'd like to know who's buying Gorillaz. But it's good because it's Damon's. He's doing what he wants to do. I think it's obviously going to be more popular than Blur stuff because it's of a substandard nature to Blur stuff. The music is pretty good but the more popular a thing is in this country, the more rubbish it is. It'd be best if people listened to simpler music, stuff that resonates more soulfully. I've seen the way my baby reacts to pop music, Steps-y type music, but it's an automaton reaction. But Shirley Collins ('60s folk singer) or the odd Steeleye Span record, it makes her smile and lighten up. Pop music now just pushes buttons. It's made of plastic, not wood ; it isn't real music. Good music isn't anything to do with commerce. Bad music is all to do with commerce."
Who or what is the "scum" you'd like "washed from the street" on 'Thank God for the Rain' on your new album, 'Crow sit in blood tree' ?
"I kind of wanted to make a social comment in a kind of protesty type song but l wanted to make the lyrics about things I've experienced around Camden. The scum are the people who are fucking pushing drugs to everybody who walks past them on the street corners, I hate them. And the people who spit on the floor and have such a huge amount of disrespect for everything that it brings general quality of life down. The four year old trying to kick your door down because you didn't give him a quid at Halloween. I'm gonna put turrets up on my house, put some guns up there, loads of trip-wires and a moat might be good, some of those lovely Dobermans. You instantly see so many more scumbags when you have a baby. Millions of them ! You need Robocop !"
Do you have any phobias ?'
"I used to not be able to walk up Parkway (busy Camden thoroughfare). I'd completely avoid it because I thought people would be making comments about me. I suppose that's what comes with being a slightly recognisable figure around here, you wonder what people are gonna be saying. I'm over that, but I'm very phobic about knives and violence. If I'm ever having any sleepless or restless nights it's usually something to do with dreams of violence."
Have you ever killed an animal for fun?
"Yeah, ants. I was a kid and I was watching some ants do their thing. I was about eight and I was fascinated by watching them doing what they were doing. Then suddenly I thought they shouldn't be allowed to do what they were doing because it was far too weird. So i decided i'd get a kettle full of hot water and pour it down their nest and stamp on them. It wasn't a pleasure, it was a duty. It was painful to do it but i had to, otherwise they'd take over the world. And i put a safety pin in a caterpillar once. All its blood was black."
If you were Prime Minister, what would you do ?
"Change the national anthem to nothing. I don't like nationnality. I hate being in cabs with St George crosses everywhere and some gobshite in the front who wants to spout his bigotry all over your face. I'd lock them all up until they grew up. Bigots and pop music fans, i'd lock them all up."
What was the last romantic thing you did ?
"Dressing up in really, really ancient work jeans, a really, really ancient valuable grandad shirt and some really old braces. Then i went to a roadside, covered myself in dirt and tried to hitch a lift. I sort of like the idea of vagrancy ; i think that's kind of romantic. For a second i felt like some itinerant folk hero. It was near Dungeness. It'd been a very long day and i'd been driving and i thought 'There's no way i' driving back to London', so i parked my car up, covered myself in dirt and thought i'd hitch a lift. Dirt is very romantic. No one picked me up. I was very close to a golf club and there were lots of people staring and they went past in their Range Rovers. I looked like i'd just appeared from out of the 1920s."
Are you good in bed ?
"Absolutely. Not. I'm very good at sleeping. I go to sleep very quick. I don't know about shagging. I can be good, i can be awful. I think i'm quite selfless."
Radiohead : art or arse ?
"That's art innit ?"
-Graham Coxon, NME, July 2001

REVIEW
The Final Deception by Heather Graham
New York Confidential #5
Coming into this series on book five shouldn’t have worked but it did. I have enjoyed this author’s work before and was happy to read a new-to-me book by her again.
Craig Frasier is an FBI agent and his fiance sometimes does pysch consultations for the FBI. In this book Craig is still having nightmares about the tough case of THE FIREMAN and Kieran Finnegan, Craig’s fiance, has just interviewed The Fireman a little while before he escapes from prison. About the time he escapes another murder following the same modus operandi takes place and all of New York is soon intently watching the news to find out what will happen next. Is this a copycat murder or did The Fireman do it?
In addition to the catch-him-if-you-can thread there is the ongoing romance between Craig and Kieran and if/when they will get married, the sibling support of the Finnegan family for one another, the police procedural aspects of solving the murder, the suspense of wondering who might be following Kieran and the question of Ruff the dog and where he will end up in the future.
This was an interesting read that might have been more interesting had I come in on book one and read the four books preceding this one because I would have known the main and supporting characters better than I did going into book five. That said, I still knew them well enough to enjoy the story.
What I liked:
* Kieran: Smart, intuitive, puzzle solver, not clingy, a good sister and fiance and very likable
* Craig: Intelligent, driven, keen to solve cases, not too clingy, a good boyfriend, dependable and bit hearted.
* The relationship between Kieran and Craig – they were mature, knew what they wanted and allowed one another the independence and distance needed to accomplish the goals of their profession.
* The Finnegan brothers – I am sure there is more to each and every one of them that I would love to know.
* Ruff – a scrappy fellow that landed in clover
* Following the threads that lead to the WHO and WHY of the murders
* The twist or two at the end
* The good thwarted evil
What I did not like:
* The psychotic puppet master and those he pulled the strings of
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Collins and Harlequin-Mira for the ARC – This is my honest review.

BOOK SUMMARY
Witness the thrilling conclusion to the beloved New York Confidential series, in THE FINAL DECEPTION (MIRA Books; March 31, 2020; $26.99). Kieran and Craig are about to take on their most chilling case yet as they hunt for a deranged serial killer who has escaped from prison to satisfy his need to kill again.
When criminal psychologist Kieran Finnegan was released from her responsibility of counseling the brutal serial killer known as The Fireman, once he was incarcerated, she was relieved to escape the tendrils of his twisted inner world. The chill she received from her sessions with him has stayed with her despite trying to leave him in the past. However, some demons refuse to remain behind bars. When her FBI agent boyfriend Craig is called to a gruesome crime scene that matches The Fireman’s MO, news begins to spread that he’s escaped from prison.
And he remembers Kieran...
Amid a citywide manhunt, Kieran and Craig need to untangle a web of deceit, privilege, and greed. They suspect that those closest to the killer have been drawn into his evil, or else someone is using another man’s madness and cruelty to disguise their crimes. When their investigation brings the danger right to the doorstep to the once safe haven of Finnegan’s Pub, Kieran and Craig will have to be smarter and bolder than ever before, because this time it’s personal, and they have everything to lose.

EXCERPT
PROLOGUE
CRAIG FRASIER BREATHED IT IN BEFORE HE COULD STOP himself; the bloodcurdling scent of burning flesh.
Human flesh.
Flames still skittered over the body—an accelerant had been used. As he stood there in the small dark alley, he heard others rushing in: Mike Dalton, his partner, and patrol officers. He heard the sirens; the fire department was coming.
But there was no saving this victim.
Craig was already tamping the fire out; an extinguisher would make the work of the medical examiner more difficult.
But he knew what the medical examiner would find.
The victim had been strangled, then the tongue had been cut out. And then the eyes had been gouged out. Death had occurred, mercifully, before the fire had been set.
The corpses haunted his dreams. Burned shells, some flesh and soft tissue remaining, charred and clinging to the bones, mummy-like. The mouth in the blackened skull was agape, and those empty, soulless eye sockets seemed to be staring up, as if they could still see, as if they stared at him in reproach…
Why hadn’t they caught the killer sooner?
He heard a rustling sound. Looking across the alley, Craig saw a shadow moving. Leaving the corpse to others, he took off like a bullet. He pursued the moving shadow at a run…running and running for blocks. The city was a blur around him.
He reached apartments on Madison, with a coffee shop and a dress store on the first floor, just as the gate at the street entry to the residential units above was closing. He caught the gate, and he reached the elevator in time to see what floor it stopped on. He followed.
And again, as he arrived, a door was just closing; he didn’t let it close.
And there he was: the Fireman, still smelling faintly of gasoline, ready to sit down to a lovely dinner with his family. About to say a prayer before the meal…just a husband and a father, and a man who looked at Craig and calmly said, “So, my work is over. But I have obeyed the commandments given me, and I will go with you.”
Why did you take so long? The corpse again! In Craig’s dreams, the corpse was back, animated, flying at him like a ghostly banshee, issuing a silent scream.
Craig opened his eyes.
He didn’t awake screaming or startled—he didn’t jerk up. It was almost as if he always knew it was a dream, reliving the day the Fireman had gone down.
He’d had the dream several times before. But, now, it seemed as though it had been a long time. Weeks. He’d thought he’d ceased experiencing it altogether. He’d been doing all the right things: quietly seeing a Bureau shrink a few times, following their advice. He hadn’t told Kieran Finnegan, his fiancée, about his recurring nightmare, and while she was a criminal psychologist working with two of the city’s finest criminal psychiatrists, he’d made a point of not telling her or her bosses.
He’d thought he’d settled it on his own. It was a little strange and sometimes intimidating being in love with someone who studied the human psyche, and he hadn’t wanted Kieran worried about him or trying to analyze him.
Why the hell had the dream come back?
He felt Kieran shift against him. He pulled her into his arms and she rolled, crystal eyes opening wide when she realized that he was awake.
And aroused. Kieran’s tangle of auburn hair was a wild mass around her face, emphasizing her eyes and the quick smile that came to her lips.
“Ah!” she murmured, feeling his arousal against her.
“Your fault,” he accused.
“Well, thankfully. What time is it?” she asked with a soft whisper.
He laughed. “Quickie time, or time for a quickie,” he said.
Her smile deepened, and there was something so sensual about it that it never failed to increase whatever he had begun to feel.
In her arms, in the liquid burn of kisses here and there strategically placed, in the swift—and intense—blaze of arching and writhing and thrusting, all else faded.
After, Craig headed for the shower. He was an FBI agent in the Criminal Division of New York City’s branch of the FBI. He could be satisfied in having brought down several killers. But there would be more; a sad fact of the world and humanity. He was blessed to have his job, his vocation, and it was time to go to work.
He shoved the dream into the back of his mind.
Whatever his day held, he’d already seen the worst that this world could offer.
Little did he know.

We Are The Masters 👑
When I first started to read Lion’s blood by Steven Barnes I wasn’t exactly sure if I was going to enjoy it or not. The preface was okay, and then before I knew it, the back cover was closing shut. All my life I have heard and been reminded of slavery and what Jim Crow has done to the pysche of not just African Americans but white Americans as well. Even though slavery has ended, African Americans are still defending themselves against racism. Steven gave me a story that I think every Black person would love to read. For once in our lives we can read even though fictional, about what it would have been like for Africa to be the thriving and colonialism power of the World and not the Europeans. As I was reading about these white characters’ villages being raided and families being broken up, it made me feel a bit of Justice.
Tumblr media
I felt good reading these white captives were taken away to a New World where Black people were the ones calling the shots and Islam was the religion of the land and NOT Christianity. Barnes I think was able to make an uneasy topic that white people are easily offended by because it “wasn’t exactly them but their ancestors” more understandable. Very rarely is someone brace enough to put the capturer in a position of submission and sub-human inferiority. This story gave me a sense of pride. The image of black people as slaves and poor is normal for the world, it’s normal to see us doing bad and committing crimes, but when we are the ones in control calling the shots, I don’t think that’s an image the white man is willing to take.
Tumblr media
It reminds me of these school shootings that’s reportedly happened 23 times since the beginning of the year, and every last one of the shooters have been white males. Sorry, white males that are “mentally ill”. But, a unarmed Black man is a criminal and dangerous and should be terminated. Society has seen plenty white criminals but they are not afraid because black criminals are shown and appropriated in the media way more. This novel is a good example of walking a day in another person’s shoes. An Alternative world isn’t always, robots and gadgets, it could easily be just the opposite of what we are use too. When Barack Obama was elected president, not once but twice, those from the 1920s-60s could say they were living in an alternative world. I I think people create alternative worlds everyday. Alternative is an escape and an answer.

Fitbit, Garmin, and all of the best fitness trackers in one place
New Post has been published on https://fitnessqia.com/must-see/fitbit-garmin-and-all-of-the-best-fitness-trackers-in-one-place/
Fitbit, Garmin, and all of the best fitness trackers in one place
Exercise, am I right? Whether you’re reading this because you genuinely love working out or because Instagram models and your love for pizza force you to exercise, one thing’s for sure: A fitness tracker that fits your needs is a necessity.
One problem: The wearable fitness market grows by the month. No longer are hardcore athletes the only ones keeping up with their calories and mileage — these babies continue to take over the lives of us regular folk more and more by the year.
SEE ALSO: Want to get serious about fitness? Here’s what you need to get started.
And with this surge to the everyday consumer, it seems like not a day goes by without a new wearable fitness tracker hitting the market. Oh, there’s a new Fitbit (again)? There’s a fancy ring that tracks your steps and calories? Because of course, why wouldn’t there be?
We’re not complaining, though.
We all have those days where we need an extra sprinkle of motivation to get up and get going — even the biggest fitness junkies wanna stay on the couch sometimes. Plus, when you can’t tell how much working out or running is actually helping, it’s kind of hard to stay excited about the whole fitness thing.
via GIPHY
Good news: Nothing says motivation like the perfect fitness tracker. Fitness trackers can help you slay your personal goals and prove to yourself that your hard work is actually paying off.
Fitness trackers aren’t just for fitness junkies. Tracking your calories, steps, sleep, and heart rate are features that most trackers have, and these are seriously handy when it comes to keeping track of your general health.
Our top pick for the best fitness tracker right now is the Fitbit Charge 2: No, we didn’t just pick it because it’s the name everyone knows — it’s genuinely a top-tier piece of arm candy. While Fitbit has a ton of high quality models, the Charge 2 is absolutely the best bang for your buck. It’s not the cheapest of the lot (priced at $149.95 or $119.95 on sale), but its slim, stylish look, OLED color screen, and personal cardio fitness scores on top of the traditional features make it a steal for the price. There’s a reason it’s Fitbit’s #1 best-seller, y’all.
Don’t worry, newbies — there are fitness trackers for every skill level, most of which are super simple to use without a steep learning curve.  Check out our list of what’s on the market and the basics of different trackers, as well as combination fitness trackers and smartwatches.
Best everyday tracker
Image: moov
The Good
Affordable • Real-time audio coach • Phenomenal battery life • Range of colors
The Bad
No GPS • Cheap-looking design • No smartphone notifications
The Bottom Line
A perfectly low maintenance tracker to ease you into the world of exercising.
1. Moov Now
Battery life: 6 months
GPS: No
Waterproof: Yes
$60

From Amazon
The fitness tracking world doesn’t have to be intimidating — the award winning Moov Now makes everything chill and easy, which is exactly what you need if you’ve psyched yourself out about exercising. At $59.95, it’s one of the cheaper trackers on our list, but that low price doesn’t make for shitty quality: Aside from the expected step and sleep tracking, it also acts as a personal fitness coach, with real-time audio feedback as well as detailed running, cycling, cardio boxing, and super advanced swimming data, all stored in the Moov smartphone app. Made for training, Moov Now also shows you how to work out in proper intervals for the fastest, safest #gains. The only thing it doesn’t have is GPS — but it is waterproof with a battery life of six months, so we’ll let the GPS slide. Choose from eight colors and get yours for $59.99 here.
Baby’s first Fitbit
Image: fitbit
The Good
Move reminders • Automatic workout recognition • Interchangeable bands • Range of colors
The Bad
No screen • No GPS
The Bottom Line
A great general purpose tracker with virtually no learning curve.
2. Fitbit Flex 2
Battery life: 5-7 days
GPS: No
Waterproof: Yes
$77
See Details
From Amazon
If you’re set on getting a Fitbit but need an easy way in, the Fitbit Flex 2 is a good, no-intense place to start. We like to think that the “Flex” in the name means “flexible.” Designed as a more general-purpose tracker, the Flex 2 is thin, light, subtle, and what Fitbit refers to its “most iconic and customizable tracker ever.” This is because the actual tracking piece can be removed to fit into numerous bands, bangles, and necklace pendants, making it flexible enough to fit any lifestyle, style preference, and outfit. Really, it’s perfect for anyone and everyone who wants to get more serious about fitness — even if you’ve never worked out a day in your life.  It tracks the usual steps, calories, and sleep, and will remind you to move if you’ve been sitting for too long, but the stand-out feature is that it’s Fitbit’s first swim-proof tracker. (It can also get call and text notifications like a smartwatch would.) Though it does benefit from SmartTrack for automatic workout recognition, it doesn’t have a screen (only uses an app) and is much less advanced than its siblings, making it a perfect first Fitbit or a tracker for kids or people who don’t want to squint to see a small screen. Get the Flex for $76.99 here.
Best bang for your buck
Image: fitbit
The Good
Personalized fitness scores • Heart rate monitor • Large OLED touchscreen
The Bad
No GPS • Not waterproof
The Bottom Line
The mother of all Fitbits, the Charge 2 combines rare health and fitness features that we usually only see in smart watches.
3. Fitbit Charge 2
Battery life: 5 days
Waterproof: No
GPS: No
$150
See Details
From Amazon
Or maybe you’re set on a Fitbit but want to skip the baby steps and get the arm candy with all of the best of all features combined. The Fitbit Charge 2 affords all of the traditional features you’d want plus extras and a color OLED screen (rare for tiny trackers like this one) without the bulk that you’d expect. It has the usual step, calories, and sleep tracking, etc., and is also equipped with PurePulse to monitor your heart rate and get alerts for an abnormalities, guided breathing, as well as a VO2 Max rating to give a personalized cardio fitness score and an idea of your overall cardiovascular health. For those who have trouble staying motivated, the Charge 2’s personalized fitness score is the perfect way to track your progress and see how much you’re improving without the confusing doctor language. Plus, the battery lasts up to five days on one charge, so you’re set for a week of workouts without worrying about charging. If you want the best of all worlds, get the Charge 2 for $149.95 here. (The Charge 3 has a few minor upgrades and will officially be released in October 2018 — preorder it here.)
Best for stressed people
Image: garmin
The Good
All-day stress tracking • Always-on touchscreen • Smartphone notifications and weather updates • Decent price for all it does
The Bad
No GPS • Could be more user-friendly
The Bottom Line
If you don’t care about GPS, the Vivosmart 3 offers comforting stress tracking and fitness scores for those who get pysched out easily.
4. Garmin Vivosmart 3
Battery life: 5 days
GPS: No
Waterproof: No
$79

From Amazon
The Garmin Vivosmart 3 is the thinnest (and best looking IMO) of the brand’s line, but there’s a lot packed into this little device that makes it helpful for people who aren’t runners or gym-goers. The Vivosmart 3 isn’t just a fitness tracker, but a stress tracker as well (AKA it will be ace to wear at work or while traveling). The heart rate monitor measures your heart rate while it’s resting to give you a stress score, with a guided breathing feature designed to lower stress when the score is too high.  The Vivosmart 3 also gives a VO2 max fitness score, your fitness “age,” monitors strength training by tracking sets, reps, and rest times that can be reviewed on the app — a feature that many trackers don’t have. The Vivosmart 3 automatically syncs to your phone and uses Move IQ to know when you’ve started a workout, making the process pretty seamless. You’ll see all of that on a gorgeous color touch screen, which is always a bonus. Get the Vivosport 3 for $79 here or wait a few weeks and get the classy Vivosmart 4 here. (For runners really itching for that built-in GPS, you can snag the Vivosmart HR+ for $95.99 here.)
Best for anti-phone people
Image: tomtom
The Good
Phone-free music • GPS • Impressive battery life • Comes with waterproof headphones
The Bad
Limited color options • No smartphone notifications
The Bottom Line
Built-in music, GPS, and stellar battery life let you leave your phone at home and exercise in peace.
5. TomTom Spark 3
Battery life : 11 hours
GPS: Yes
Waterproof: No
$235
See Details
From Amazon
There are two types of people in this world: Those whose smartphones are a third limb, and those who take days to text back and leave their phone untouched whenever possible. If you’re part of the latter group, the TomTom Spark 3 Cardio+Music could be the tracker for you. Not only does it have built-in GPS (for new route exploration and, uh, not getting lost) but also has a built-in music player — AKA you don’t need to awkwardly carry your phone while running. Finding a fitness tracker with built-in music is rare — Garmin has one, but it’s pricey (like over $400 pricey). Anti-phone people no longer have to choose between necessary workout jams and keeping both hands free. This puppy has an impressive battery life of three weeks if you turn GPS off — but we’re guessing you don’t want to do that. Even with it on, the device is said to last 11 hours on one charge, which is still stellar compared to competitors. Music can be stored locally on the tracker or paired via Bluetooth if you do bring your phone — except you can also set up smartphone notifications on your TomTom, so a phone is seriously not necessary. Aside from the cool built-in stuff, the TomTom Spark 3 tracks your distance, speed, calories, sleep, swimming, and can differentiate between indoor and outdoor workouts. The bundle also comes with a pair of Bluetooth headphones, because TomTom is nice like that. Get it for $234.99 here.
Most discreet tracker
Image: motiv ring
The Good
Unique fitted ring design • Multi-day battery life • Stores data without phone syncing • Works with Alexa
The Bad
Not Android compatible • Only two colors
The Bottom Line
Complete with Alexa compatibility, the Motiv Ring is the fitness tracker for people who hate wearing fitness trackers.
6. Motiv Ring
Battery life: 3 days
GPS: No
Waterproof: Yes
$200
See Details
From Amazon
If you really can’t stand the look and feel of bracelet fitness trackers (no matter how sleek or inconspicuous they are) that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck or have to clip something nerdy9your shirt. The Motiv Ring is a tiny metal band you’ll actually want to wear. It tracks activity, sleep, and heart rate, and it can be worn 24/7 — even in the shower or while swimming. Motiv’s battery can last up to three days on a single charge, can store your data for up to five days without being synced to a phone, and uses a super nice-looking smartphone app to tell you about your progress. (The Android version used to only be beta, but now it’s official.) And, if you download the Motiv skill on your Echo device, you can ask Alexa about your progress, data from previous days, and can even help you find your lost phone. We’re really not kidding about the 24/7 thing, by the way. Aside from being waterproof, you can pretty much ensure that your ring won’t fall off or slip and slide around during high movement activities. Before you receive your actual ring, Motiv will send you a sizing set to find your size, allowing you to choose the finger that would be most comfortable for your ring to sit on. It is slightly larger than a traditional ring, but if you’re used to wearing a ring every day anyway, you probably won’t even notice that it’s there — and it’s certainly less noticeable than an arm band fitness tracker.  Get your Motiv Ring for $199.99 here.
Fitness trackers that double as actual smart watches
Looking for something a little more all-encompassing? These smartwatches have all of the fitness tracking features you’re looking for, plus all of the connected capabilities of smart tech, such as phone and social media notifications.
Best for hardcore runners
Image: garmin
The Good
Indoor and outdoor settings • GPS and GLONASS mapping • Intense focus on running
The Bad
Pricey • Occasional confusing app navigation
The Bottom Line
Garmin has truly outdone themselves with the new-and-improved 235, featuring ultra-accurate GPS and four running settings.
7. Garmin Forerunner 235
Battery life: 11 hours
GPS: Yes
Waterproof: Yes
$250
See Details
From Amazon
If running is your thing (or the thing of the person you’re gifting to) the Garmin Forerunner 235 is a beast of a device made for those who take running very seriously. I mean, there’s a reason “runner” is in the name: With Garmin Connect, runners can choose from four running settings (including indoor and outdoor running) and customize their workouts and goals to match their skill level. And don’t worry, Garmin’s impressively fast GPS and GLONASS mapping is able to keep up. For indoor treadmill running, the built-in accelerometer comes in handy to keep track of distance and pace without the need of an extra device on your whoe. Garmin’s Elevate™ heart rate technology is also notable to track workout intensity, with a colorful gauge that lets you know your rate in real time to let you know if anything wonky is up. Aside from running settings, this Amazon’s Choice tracker acts like a traditional activity tracker by counting calories, steps, and sleep, and also reminds you to move if it senses that you’ve been sitting for over an hour. Get the Forerunner 235 for $249.99 here.  (Hardcore runners who are easily bothered by extra accessories on their arms should check out the Milestone Pod: A tracker that hangs onto your shoelace and helps to improve running performance through tracking cadence, stride length, ground contact, foot strike, rate of impact, leg swing, and total shoe mileage in addition to the more traditional wearable metrics like pace, steps, and calories burned.)
Best for diet tracking
Image: samsung
The Good
Super lightweight • Spotify built in • Tracks calories eaten and burned • Personal fitness coach
The Bad
Limited color options • Crappy for iPhone users • No LTE like the S3
The Bottom Line
Enjoy fitness tracking and diet tracking features as well as Spotify playback, control of smart devices, and more.
8. Samsung Gear Sport
Battery life: 4 days
GPS: Yes
Waterproof: Yes
$269

From Amazon
If you’re looking for something more than a fitness tracker but less intense than an Apple watch, the new Samsung Gear Sport may be for you. It features water resistance up to 50 meters, built-in GPS, automatic workout recognition, stretch reminders, activity and calorie tracking (eaten and burned) and acts as a personal fitness coach on your wrist. If you’re stubborn when it comes to healthy eating (raises hand), have trouble committing to a diet, or are on a wonky sleep schedule, the Gear Sport wants to act as your motivation to keep up with your goals. The powerful device also falls into the smartwatch category: Enjoy receiving and responding to calls and texts, Spotify playback, real-time control of compatible smart devices like appliances, locks, and lights, and access to all of your favorite apps like Twitter or the Pear personal coaching app. This is all compiled into a compact device that actually looks like a classic round watch, and it weighs next to nothing. Get it for $249.99 here.
Best fitness tracker/smartwatch combo
Image: apple
The Good
Guided runs and in-ear coaching • LTE support • Calling and texting
The Bad
Extremely pricey • Limited color options • Paid LTE gets expensive
The Bottom Line
Apples blows the competition out of the water thanks to calling, texting, in-ear coaching, and more. We’d expect nothing less from Apple.
9. Apple Watch Series 3
Battery life: 18 hours
GPS: Yes
Waterproof: Yes
$429

From Amazon
The new Apple Watch Series 3 with Nike+ is pretty much the ultimate combo of smartwatch and fitness tracker. It sports a sleek, rectangle design and looks less like a traditional round watch, with smartwatch features like LTE support, calls and texts, music streaming, and phone notifications. As a fitness tracker, the Series 3 has a super accurate heart rate monitor and alerts you of any abnormalities. (There’s also an FDA-approved Apple Watch band that can run legit EKGs without going to the doctor.) Nike+ takes running to the next level with guided runs, motivational notifications, and in-ear coaching — perfect for newbies or people who need an extra push to get up and going. Though the Apple Watch does not automatically recognize that you’ve started an exercise, you can simply launch the workout app (or any other third-party app). The expected GPS, water resistance, and distance tracking are also present, and there’s actually a slightly less expensive version of this Apple Watch Series 3 that is GPS only (no LTE) starting at $329. Get the Apple Watch with Nike+ for $429 here.
Listen, the fact that you’re even reading this is a step in the right direction to a healthy lifestyle. These trackers won’t do the work for you, but they can at least take the “I can’t even tell if it’s working,” doubts that a lot of us having about our progress. When you can see your results paying off in the numbers and how you’re improving week to week, you’ll be more inspired than ever to crush the hell out of your fitness goals.
