Eh why not.  This was actually the first idea I wrote down, and I still like it.  :>
So many reunions have Emmet running up to Ingo and hugging the life out of him.  Good!  I love!  But what if
Need the vague setup of Ingo has Returned.  He is aware that it feels like home, but his memories are still kaputz.  The lingering feelings of having lived years in a haze, building new memories off of nothing and how empty and lonely it was.
His feet are taking him through the streets automatically.  If he doesn't think about it, it comes naturally, but when he notices he becomes lost again.  It is night, few people around, no one seems to be paying him much mind.  It's that time of night where…something is over.  He doesn't know what. (hint: subway shutting down for the night)
Looks up to see a man exiting a building.  Probably saluting a goodbye to someone.  And Ingo just…he runs.  He doesn't know this man, but nothing could stop him now.  There are tears in his eyes because he is so close and he still doesn't /know/ or /understand/ but.
There is a brief flash of eyes as the other turns around just before Ingo barrels into him, hugging him as tight as he can.  The other man is frozen against him, not hugging back, but also not pushing away.
"I am Emmet."
And how that name /clicks/ in Ingo's mind.
"Yes!" he replies, hugging tighter, more tears streaming down his face.  It is Emmet, and now he knows this.
"You are Ingo"
"Yes!"  Louder, because it's true, because Ingo can feel Emmet moving against him, arms starting to raise.
"Ingo is…here"
"Yes!"  Because Ingo is home.  And Emmet is hugging him, wailing because his brother has returned.
(Later Emmet can't stop bawling, and Ingo can't stop beaming despite his own tears)

Ah midnight.  The perfect time to come up with new ideas.
Rather surprised not to have seen this variant myself but!
In which Emmet too loses his memories.  That's it, that's all.  No getting eeby deebied.  Just, when Ingo vanishes, Emmet can't remember where he is, who these people are, etc.  He knows his name, knows something is missing, but that's it.
And you think it would be easy, right?  All these people around him are there to remind him, there's so much physical proof of the memories.  Except he can't retain the information.  Yes, he'll listen intently as Elesa explains their history together.  He'll get flashes of familiarity.  He'll look away from her face for just a moment, and by the time he's looked back he has no idea who he's looking at again.  Sometimes the memories stay longer, but it's disheartening.
Emmet also keeps wandering off.  He knows something is missing, but he's just so uncomfortable staying in a place he does not recognize.  So many people paying him attention, claiming they know him, and yet his mind remains blank.  He does not like the sensation of being nothing, when he has no memories.  All he knows is he needs to leave, to search.
How long do they try to keep him there?  A few months, perhaps.  Most specialists agree that being around familiar faces and places might help with his missing memories.  There's also the issue of the missing Ingo.  Everyone assumes that's what Emmet insists he's missing.  But like the rest of his memories, Emmet has no memory of his brother.
So after the months of a disheartening lack of progress, of Emmet returning to this blank slate after every conversation, they just…let him leave.  There's no one really with the authority to make him stay, and the one most interested in his well-being…
It's been the roughest time of Elesa's life.  She's lost both her best friends, even though one of them is right in front of her.  She tries to hard to keep a positive attitude, to keep hoping that /this/ time Emmet will remember something, that a clue to Ingo's whereabouts will be found.  But she's at the end of what she can handle on her own.  Skyla has been as supportive as she could be, but Elesa /missed/ her honorary brothers.
When Emmet goes missing /again/, she runs after him, as she always does.  Tracks him down, where he's already on the outskirts of Nimbasa, steadily plodding his way along.  Her heart /breaks/ when he turns unrecognizing eyes on her, and she snaps.  She's done with this.
(In the back of her mind, she'd noticed.  Notices that Emmet would remember the occasional traveler he ran into, since the Incident.  It was subconscious at best, but it led her to her current actions.)
Maybe she or Emmet have a pocket knife, or just some cutting implement.  She grabs it and hacks at her hair, cutting off the long tresses.  She tosses aside the coat that she treasured, and she grabs at Emmet's jacket.  She's not /Elesa/, no.  She's Ella.  Just a trainer.  Just a traveler.
And Emmet…doesn't forget that.  He starts talking to her again.  Remembers meeting her on the road.  So long as she doesn't connect to anything that was "Elesa", he doesn't forget.
She hadn't intended on leaving her life behind.  Still, she doesn't regret it.  At least this way she can still help and support Emmet.  She can still look for Ingo.
The Nimbasa Trio is gone.
(With obligatory they absolutely do find Ingo and restore everyone's memories.  Happy endings are a must.)

Let’s do another one then.
So I definitely have a habit of daydreaming where a fanfic might be going, or where I wished it would have gone instead.  That happened recently I think in combination of reading We Will Always Have Each Other and Detours so...yeah.
So many fics have someone "talk sense" into Emmet instead of letting him rush to his brother's side.  And sure sometimes they do let him rush over, but it's usually somehow more local, not across continents or anything.  So I guess what I'm saying is I'm going to steal that idea of a local Sinnoh broadcast of "do you know this man"
And boy howdy, did they not expect what happened next.
See, people have been looking for a hint of Ingo since the disappearance.  You have the important, high up friends, reaching out to other important, high up friends.  The search didn't go too far out of Nimbasa and the Unova region, but there were some people who were aware of what happened.  But more importantly, trainers, adventurers, travelers.  They most assuredly know, and travel the globe.
It starts slow.  A friend calls a friend in Unova, passing on a link to the news segment.  Word spreads quickly among the people as excitement builds.  Could it be?  Some gym leader pings the local gym leader, asking if this wasn't the brother they'd asked them to look out for so long ago?  After that word travels to Emmet immediately.
And there's no pause.  There's no stopping.  No one needs to be told, no one needs to ask questions.  Emmet just starts running out of the Subway, coat flapping behind him.  In the streets people are starting to gather, starting to make their way to transports, excitedly talking in groups, passing the word on faster and further.
As Emmet burst out of the subway, there's cheers, cries, encouragement.  People running along side him, clearing the path in front of him, all wanting to help, to be there for one of their beloved Subway Masters.  And the Pokemon trainers rally, those with flying pokemon swooping in and calling out.  Not even pausing to land, just reaching out a beseeching hand.  And Emmet leaps, is lifted, up into their arms and into the sky, a small procession heading for the other continent.
(Behind them, people pour onto trains, onto travel pokemon, any means possibly and begin heading for Sinnoh.  They need to greet one of their own, welcome him back from where he'd been.)
The flight is long, and tiring for a pokemon carrying two.  Others offer to take over, Emmet letting himself fall from one and onto another.  Such a danger they'd normally never allow, but they can't stop.  Not when everyone had been waiting for this moment for so long.
They land at the hospital, and there's no need to ask who Emmet is.  It's wildly obvious.  He's let through, police waved away so as not to interfere, and he finally can reunite with his brother.
There's some roadblocks.  Ingo doesn't remember it all, after all.  How can he slot back into a space and a world that has moved on without him?  But he's there, and that means more than anything at this point.
Emmet just laughs, incredulous.  What does Ingo mean?  No one has forgotten him.  And outside, people begin arriving, anxious to see Ingo alive and well.  Sinnoh is invaded by Unovians who have waited years for their beloved Subway Master to return.
Have you seen this man?  Yes, says Unova, we have.  And we welcome him home.

There is a legend in Unova.  It takes place long ago, during the war of the descendants of the twin heroes, when Reshiram and Zekrom tore apart the land after being pitted against each other despite the brothers' reconciliation.  For so long, the region had been torn apart by the battling dragons, until one day, finally, the dragons' rage had settled.  The battlefield was filled with the silence of death, the survivors shaken as they emerge to survey the ravaged land.
Reshiram and Zekrom turned to the survivors, cursing the ones who'd driven them to this level of destruction.  They were forced to wear the markings of the dragons, physical reminders of the harm they'd caused the region, forever keeping them apart from their fellow humans and partner pokemon alike.  Their features were twisted into parodies of the dragons' traits, faces elongated into muzzles, feathers or fur covering their skin, claws and horns and teeth that were frightening to behold.
The descendants had retreated, hiding their guilt and their shame.  They'd avoided others, kept to themselves as they passed down the lesson learned, to never let their pride and ambition cause harm to the world.  Over the years, as peace reigned and the descendants continued to uphold the truth and ideals they had learned through the terrible battle, as generations were born, lived, and died, the curse slowly began to wane.  The lesson had been learned, after all.  None of the family line ever held their personal ambitions against another in strife.
Slowly the physical reminders stopped appearing on new children.  Slowly they were able to reintegrate with the nearby villages.  Eventually the traits only showed up in the rare case of twins being born.  Sometimes it was just sharper nails and teeth, other times it was horns curling out of the fluffy hair.  While it stopped being seen so much as a curse, they were always careful to keep the traits hidden.  Perhaps out of shame, or perhaps just not wanting to deal with the comments and curiosity that would surely arise.
The story continues to be passed down, though none know anymore how much of it was true.  Still, the story lives on, just in case.
Ingo and Emmet were born with wings.
Whether or not the legend was true, they don't have any particular extra powers.  There are other twins in the region, and perhaps some of them have minor tells as well, but Ingo and Emmet definitely have the most dramatic feature.  These days there's no particular stigma about the "curse" either, as it's more of an urban legend that's not taken seriously.  Still, their parents decide it's not worth the trouble of answering questions about it and have the boys hide their wings.
(It's a sort of an open secret.  It's not flaunted, but it is hard to keep two rambunctious children from hiding something that to them is perfectly natural.  So long as no one comments, there's nothing strange about it.  Besides, the boys are delightful, polite and energetic.  How could anyone hate the rays of sunshine?)
"Emmet, sweetie, hold still for just another moment," his mother chided gently as she worked his arm into the sleeve of his jacket.  He did his best, contenting himself with rubbing his fingers along the cuff of the sleeve that was already on as she finished fussing with the other arm.  He could feel his wings tight against his back, the jacket wrapped snug around him in a comforting pressure.
Finally, his mother was satisfied and let him go with a pat on his head, turning her attention to Ingo.  "Alright sir, your turn."  She shook out the other jacket that had been draped over her arm, holding it out to his brother.  Ingo's wings fluffed out as he hopped forward eagerly, then flattened down as he turned his back to her and held out his arms. Laughing softly, she began helping him into his clothes as well.
Excitement bubbled in Emmet's chest.  Today was family trip day.  They were going to go all the way to the city!  There would be so many new things to see!  He bounced on his heels, his arms flapping out at his sides in time with each bounce.  After a moment, his mother stood up and moved away, and Emmet turn his attention back on Ingo.  Like him, Ingo began to bounce on his heels, matching Emmet's movement as they waited for their parents to finish getting ready.
Their jackets were long, reaching down to calf level.  At that length, the majority of their wings were hidden beneath it, easily explainable as a second layer.  Sometimes it was stuffy to wear them, but mostly Emmet didn't mind.  He liked the way they flapped around when they moved, swirling around his legs or flaring if he turned abruptly enough.
"Alright boys, we're ready to head out," their father said at last.  Finally!  "But first, remember the rules?"
"Yes!" Ingo burst out immediately.
"Yes!" Emmet echoed, nodding eagerly.  They did know this!
In unison, they recited, "Stay together, don't leave your sight, don't take off our jackets, and have fun!"  Ingo was so loud on the last word that Emmet's ears were ringing, but he didn't care.  His face was aching with how big he was smiling.
"Good job.  And if anyone asks any questions you don't want to answer?"
"It's none of their business!" Emmet said, raising a hand high as he laughed.
"Emmet," Ingo scolded.  "That's rude.  We're supposed to go get mom or dad and not talk to strangers."
Their mother giggled, snagging Emmet's raised hand and dropping a kiss on it.  "Well, you're both right.  It is none of their business, but you should come straight to us if anything happens."
Emmet tugged his hand away with an emphatic, "Gross!"  Then he reached out, Ingo's hand meeting him halfway.  He swung their hands between them happily.  "I want to ride the ferris wheel."
"We're ready for departure!" Ingo said smartly.
"Then let's go!"
Growing up, Ingo and Emmet got into the habit of keeping their wings hidden under long jackets and the like.  It wasn't that they hated their wings or anything.  Their parents would often take them into the wilderness on camping trips where they could stretch their wings and fly about if they wanted.  It just never interested them much.  It was easier to keep them hidden away from any wayward stares or questions.
(One of the things they enjoyed doing was preening each others wings.  It was relaxing, allowing them to take care of their sibling and be taken care of in return.  They liked being well groomed and professional in the rest of their life, this was just another extension of that.)
(Perhaps the wings are also why they got in the habit of the Naruto run, lol~  Have you ever tried to run with a pack on?  While not fully equivalent, there are some similarities.  You have extra weight on your back, it's easier and more stabilizing to hook your hands into the straps as you run.  So they don't pump their arms, they keep them steady and don't shift the weight on their back from side to side.)
As they got older, they got better at their disguises, learning how to move and dress to minimize any telltale signs of the wings beneath their clothes.  And of course when they became the subway masters, they designed their jackets to be the perfect camouflage.  The high collars covered the bump of the wings that were above their shoulders, the length keeping the mass of the wings beneath them looking like a feather layer, and the colors matching.
They also devised a new game they could play, that doubled as part of their duties for the subway.  While the open skies didn't call them, the subway tunnels did.  And they did need to do the occasional inspection of the lines, after hours when the rest of the workers went home.  It was actually Ingo who thought it up, though Emmet took every chance to challenge his brother thereafter.  The game was a race, where they were able to use their wings to perform tight maneuvers, propelling themselves forward as fast as the could, keeping the glide for as long as they could before being forced to touch down, going at honestly reckless speeds in their fervor.

My #1 post of 2022
I was thinking about @hoofpeet‘s latest stuff on Emmutt, as I do when my hands are busy and my mind is wandering.  And I just thought like
What would Emmet’s interactions with Emmutt be like once they return?  Would he be blasé like Ingo?  Would he be angry like Zingo and Chandelure?
And I feel he is savvy enough with all sorts of pokemon that once he has the real deal Ingo, he can forgive a lot of the bad behavior.  It tips over into the “here’s my horrible pet isn’t he funny” like Ingo does.
However!  I also thought that like, Emmet had a tough time while Ingo was gone.  He struggled a lot, kept going, and got his bro back in the end.  So he’s doing much better now!  Still, that doesn’t mean there aren’t bad days.  Days where the feelings of loss still spring up.
Emmutt has been trying to get back under Emmet’s skin whenever he can, but the brothers are just too alike in how they treat him.  When he notices Emmet looking run-down and sad (and probably sleep deprived, because that’s never good for one’s mental health), he sees an opportunity.  And he digs in deep, almost as bad as that first encounter, hoping to get a good reaction out of Emmet.
(They don’t realize Ingo and Zingo are nearby, the former bristling at the bad behavior, and the latter smug that Emmutt’s about to get a scolding.)
And Emmet just sort of laughs a little, and is like, “You can’t hurt me worse than Zingo did (by accident) when we first met.”  Then he wanders off to find Elesa to sleep on bc that’s what he does to feel better when he’s moody over Ingo’s disappearance.
It’s an instant triple K.O.
Emmutt is insulted to immovability at the implication that Zingo is better at being a hellion than he is.  Zingo is devastated because she didn’t mean to hurt Emmet, she really didn’t!  (He knows this and wouldn’t have said so to her face, at least not anymore.)  And Ingo is shot with the misplaced guilt over his absence hurting Emmet so much.
(Part of this was also because initially Zingo was supposed to torment Emmet, until she turned into the best pupper who tries very hard.  Still, even if it wasn’t intentional, Emmet had so many Issues because of her.)
*hand waves*  Hoofpeet does such angsty things with a touch of humor.  It’s hard to put it in writing, but it’s not meant to be bad, just a miscommunication of errors.

samples of CSS journal-style
@qualquercoisa945 @doctormagikarp
Tumblr media
a sample of how it may render - all browsers are slightly different, i've tried to make it reasonably compatible
background
body{ background-image:radial-gradient(#edb,#a85); background-size:.1cm .1cm; }
sufficiently small radial gradient, when repeated in square shapes, creates an illusion of fabric threads -- any text put directly on such background is gonna be less readable
the pin
.pin{ width:20px; height:20px; border-radius:50%; margin:.5cm; background-color:#dd1e1e; box-shadow: inset .5px .5px 1.5px 0 #ffb5b5, inset 0 0 10px -5px #ffb5b5, -8.5px -8.5px 1.5px -8px #ffb5b5, -7px -7px 6px -3px #e76d6d, 10px 6px 6px -3px #5e0d0d, -2px -2px 4.5px 4px #dd1e1e, .5px .5px 1.5px 6.5px #951414, 3px 3px 1.5px 1.5px #262000, 9px 1px 4px 2px #262000, 17px 7px 10px 4px #3e3500; box-shadow: inset .5px .5px 1.5px 0 #ffb5b5, inset 0 0 10px -5px #ffb5b5, -8.5px -8.5px 1.5px -8px #ffb5b5, -7px -7px 6px -3px #e76d6d, 10px 6px 6px -3px #5e0d0d, -2px -2px 4.5px 4px #dd1e1e, .5px .5px 1.5px 6.5px #951414, 3px 3px 1.5px 1.5px #262000, 9px 1px 4px 2px #262000dd, 17px 7px 10px 4px #3e3500dd; }
the first option for the box shadow is a backup for those browsers that don't render partly transparent colours; the second option looks better, but won't be rendered in older browsers.
the post it note
.postit{ background-color:#dd0; background-image: radial-gradient(transparent,#ffd700ee), linear-gradient(transparent,#ffd742dd 25% 65%,transparent) ; display: block; margin: 30px; width: clamp(150px,400px,calc(100% - 50px)); min-width: 200px; max-width: calc(100% - 50px); min-height: 200px; padding: 10px; padding-left: 60px; border-radius: 5px; box-shadow: 1px 3px 4px 2px #964, inset 0 0 50px -20px #cce5ff; color: #1a1a1a; font-size: 20px; letter-spacing: .5px; font-variant: small-caps; font-family: cursive; word-spacing: .4em; line-height: 1cm; hyphens: auto; vertical-align:middle; }
the lined paper
.lined{ padding:15px; padding-right:3.1cm; background-position-y:15px; margin:10px; border-radius: 4px; min-height:4cm; background-color: #f5deb3; background-image:linear-gradient(#dba 1px,transparent 1px 1em); background-image: linear-gradient(#dba 1px,transparent 1px 1em); background-image: linear-gradient(270deg,transparent 2.9cm,#f006,transparent 3cm), linear-gradient(#dba 1px,transparent 1px 1em) ; background-size:100% 2em; box-shadow: inset 0 0 40px 0 #d2b48c, 2px 5px 4px 0 #853; color: #00001a; font-size: 1em; line-height:2em; } .lined p{margin:2em .5em;padding:0}
the first versions of background image is here to provide a backup for somewhat older browsers - it doesn't have the red margin line because i got lazy writing it
the patch
.patch{ width:6cm; min-height:4cm; max-width:80%; margin: 1cm; padding: 30px; background-color: #bb7e3e; background-image:radial-gradient(circle,#b57230,transparent); background-size:.15cm .2cm; border-radius: 25px; border: 2px dashed #392106; box-shadow: 0 0 10px -2px #392106, inset 0 0 10px 2px #392106, inset 0 0 21px 0 #eeaa82, 0 0 0 5px #bb7e3e, 0 0 3px 5.5px #ea6, 2px 5px 15px 2px #320; color: #181a16; font-weight: bolder; text-align: center; }
the "fabric structure" of the patch is simplified for the sake of browser compatibility. it's possible to target specific browsers with slightly different code that'd render more realistic leather in each, but that's a lot of code -- (two semi-transparent repeating linear gradients at different angles, repeats of a radial gradient to make it "shine", some play with the blending modes, and then a shape distortion strategy that's different for different browsers, to make it look more like a natural texture) -- so i've replaced it with something simple here. optionally, one could a second radial gradient on top, one with smaller bits of a slightly brighter colour, with different positions set for each layer of the background - to make the current texture look more shiny.

i'd appreciate it if the websites / blogs that use this code - could please link this post somewhere unobtrusive / reblog it, so that more people can use this code as well.
i'd like a prettier internet ;3
(i also have code for other office supply stuff / effects, but this post is long enough already)

Hi, Charity! Is it possible for an sp-dom 9 to confuse themselves with 6? I’m an ENFP trying to determine my tritype (I’ve settled on either 964 or 694 for now), and I’m fairly certain my instinctual variant stacking is sp/so. The problem is that I’m currently oscillating between 9 and 6, and while it SEEMS like I’m a 9 core, I also have such an overwhelming desire for security that I simply cannot rule core 6 out (though I’m thinking it could just be stemming from my self-preservation instinct). Thank you!
SP-dom would be concerned with... well, self-preservation regardless of their Enneagram core (it’s all about ensuring their own survival), so look at 9 separately from 6 and compare them. A 9 believes the best in other people, a 6 assumes and focuses on the worst. A 9 prefers harmony, a 6 prefers the truth. A 9 puts up walls to keep people out, a 6 tries to ‘think’ their way into people. A 9 merges into people, a 6 keeps them at a distance (because it’s safer that way). A 9 isn’t always aware of danger, a 6 over-focuses on it. A 9 assumes everything is going to turn out fine and prefers not to be negative, a 6 assumes they need to worry about things in advance and think about how it could all go wrong, etc.
I’m a 6-9 and my 9 mostly hates conflict and wants to be calm, but 6 is always front and center in the worrying, second-guessing and self-doubt department.

Pfizer questions UK move to lengthen gap between Covid vaccine doses
Pfizer has criticised the UK’s decision to lengthen the gap between doses of its Covid-19 vaccine, saying the “safety and efficacy” of the new schedule had not been evaluated, as infections and hospitalisations continued to soar across the UK.
The rare intervention by the US pharma company came amid growing controversy over the move, with doctors complaining that they were having to cancel appointments and reassure anxious patients who had previously been told they needed the second dose to keep them safe.
“[Our] study . . . was designed to evaluate the vaccine’s safety and efficacy following a two-dose schedule, separated by 21 days,” the company said.
“The safety and efficacy of the vaccine has not been evaluated on different dosing schedules as the majority of trial participants received the second dose within the window specified in the study design.”
The new dosing guidelines, approved by the UK’s joint committee on vaccination and immunisation and unveiled on Wednesday, allow the second dose of both the vaccine that Pfizer developed with BioNTech, and the newly approved Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, to be delivered as much as three months after the first.
The change is aimed at giving a first dose of vaccine to as many people as possible, in an attempt to counter spiralling case numbers caused by a viral variant of the coronavirus that has been found to be much more infectious.
There was fresh evidence on Thursday of the toll the virus is taking in the UK, with a further 964 deaths announced and fresh signs of the strain on hospitals.
NHS Providers, which represents health organisations across the UK, said Covid-19 pressures were intensifying, particularly in London and the south-east, where the surge in admissions over the past few days was “extremely worrying”.
Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, said that as of Wednesday there were 22,713 Covid-19 patients in hospital in England — an increase of more than 27 per cent in seven days. “Over the same period the number of Covid-19 patients in critical care beds rose by 35 per cent,” she added.
Matt Hancock, UK health secretary, on Thursday sought to counter suggestions that the vaccination programme, which the government sees as vital to taming the pandemic, was falling behind schedule.
He said 944,539 people across the UK had had their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. “The NHS has a clear vaccine delivery plan and today’s figures show once again how our fantastic NHS has risen to this enormous task . . . Now that we have authorised a second vaccine, we can expect this number to rapidly increase in the months ahead.”
Although partial protection through the vaccine appears to begin as early as 12 days after the first jab, Pfizer stressed that two doses were required to provide the maximum protection against the disease, with an efficacy figure of 95 per cent. Crucially, it said: “There are no data to demonstrate that protection after the first dose is sustained after 21 days.”
The drugmaker said decisions on alternative dosing regimens were in the hands of health authorities and that it remained committed to talking to regulators, but it stressed each recipient should be afforded the maximum possible protection, “which means immunisation with two doses of the vaccine”.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said: “The decision was made to update the dosage interval recommendations for the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine following a thorough review of the data by the MHRA’s Covid-19 Vaccines Benefit Risk Expert Working Group. This expert group concluded that vaccine efficacy will be maintained with dosing intervals longer than 21 days.”
Doctors in the UK expressed anger and concern over the switch, saying they had to spend time cancelling appointments for people who had expected to receive their top-up dose in the next few days.
Helen Salisbury, a GP in Oxford, described the situation as “a shambles” and calculated that it would take the network of practices administering the vaccine for her area 193 hours of staff time to reschedule appointments.
She questioned the judgment, and data modelling, behind the decision. “What does the science say? We don’t know.”
The British Medical Association said asking doctors to rebook appointments of tens of thousands of elderly and vulnerable patients was “unreasonable and totally unfair, and practices who honour existing appointments booked for the next few days should be supported”.
In his new year message, Boris Johnson, UK prime minister, hailed the Oxford vaccine, saying it “offers literally a new lease of life to people in this country and around the world”.
However, he warned of “a hard struggle still ahead of us for weeks and months, because we face a new variant of the disease that requires a new vigilance”.
Four questions about the UK’s Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine rollout
Why is there a six-day delay between regulatory approval and the first vaccinations with the Oxford/AZ vaccine?
Vaccines have to be delivered and stored according to conditions laid down by the UK medicines regulator, the MHRA, which were not known until the approval announcement on Wednesday.
What other factors are delaying the deployment of the new vaccine?
Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer, said this week that “the only thing that is going to slow us down is batches of vaccine becoming available”. This, he said, was “not just about vaccine manufacture” but also about “fill and finish” — the process of putting vaccine into vials and packaging it for distribution — which he said was “a critically short resource across the globe”. The second factor delaying supplies for patients is the regulatory requirement that each batch of vaccine is checked for safety and quality before it can be given to patients.
Will the changing of the dosing regimen to one dose and a second after 12 weeks speed things up?
The decision to increase the intervals between doses, not only for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, but also the BioNTech/Pfizer version, is aimed at protecting more people, more quickly. With no need to keep back half the supply to give second doses to those who have already received a measure of protection, all the available doses can be used immediately. However, perhaps made wary by previous pandemic grand promises that did not materialise, the government and the NHS will not be drawn on how many more will be covered in a specific timescale as a result.
When will the UK be able to deliver on the target of 2m people a week being vaccinated?
The government is standing by its promise that all over-50s, and younger people whose health is particularly vulnerable, will have been vaccinated by the end of March. Boris Johnson on Wednesday promised “tens of millions of doses” by that point. Simon Stevens, head of England’s NHS, has spoken of everyone in the priority groups being covered by “the late spring”.

Alberta’s health minister says the province will wait before considering new COVID-19 measures as cases rise in Calgary and Edmonton. During the weekly COVID-19 update, Health Minister Jason Copping said the province’s positivity rate and wastewater data both show signs of rising transmission, but had little to say about any potential response plan.
“We are seeing a slight initial uptick, particularly in Calgary and Edmonton, but there’s high variability in that so we’re going to have to watch that over the next days and weeks,” Copping said Wednesday. “There are some other jurisdictions that are ahead of us on this. We’ll watch what they’re doing and then we’ll see, from our own indicators, what actions we may or may not have to take.”
Alberta reported 4,612 new lab-confirmed cases and 30 deaths over the past week, with the new BA.2 variant being the dominant strain. The average positivity rate also increased from 22 percent last week to 24.5 per cent.
There were 964 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday, including 47 people in ICU, a decrease of nine since March 23. Wastewater samples collected from Calgary show the level of COVID-19 infection increased in the city at the beginning of March.
Meanwhile, top health officials in other provinces are reporting signs of a sixth wave. Public health officials in Quebec said COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise and the surge not taken lightly. Health officials in some Ontario regions are advising residents to keep wearing masks considering rising COVID-19 trends.
“If we look at other jurisdictions around the world and across the country, we have seen an increase in BA.2 variant, but what remains to be seen is how big that wave will be,” Copping said. “We’re still going to see how that may affect our health-care system.”
On Tuesday, U.S. regulators approved a second booster dose for Americans aged 50 and older, as well as immunocompromised people age 12 and up. Copping said the province isn’t moving forward with fourth vaccine doses for Albertans.
“(Alberta’s chief medical officer of health) Dr. (Deena) Hinshaw spoke about fourth doses last week, only for potentially the immunocompromised and not going any further,” Copping said. “We will rely on the expert advice from the National Committee on Immunization, as well as our Alberta committee.”
Copping appeared alone on Wednesday as he expected Hinshaw back next week. When asked why a deputy CMOH not made available to answer medical questions, Copping said he didn’t think it was necessary.
All pharmacies in Alberta will order shipments of Pfizer’s Paxlovid COVID-19 treatment this week, Copping announced. Initially, the medication thought to only be available at 135 pharmacies in Alberta because of limited supply, he said.
“I’m pleased to report that as supply has increased, beginning this Friday, any interested pharmacy in Alberta will order Paxlovid treatments to dispense packs to eligible Albertans.” Paxlovid is an antiviral drug taken orally to treat COVID-19 infections available for people with a prescription and a positive PCR test. On Tuesday, Copping said the province’s initial shipment was arriving, with 3,200 courses of treatment available to eligible Albertans beginning Jan. 31.
The oral, at-home antiviral treatment designed for mild cases of COVID-19 to prevent severe outcomes, with Pfizer’s clinical trials showing a nearly 90 percent reduction in hospitalizations or deaths when taken within five days of infection. Health Canada approved the pill for adults last week.
Copping also encouraged Albertans to get their third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and to pick up rapid test kits at local pharmacies.
