Why people crush on different ATLA characters:

Zuko: a SOFTIE. he had an amazing redemption arc and even at his worse he was still a cutie. plus he got that sixpack and dEEp voice.

Aang: no one is actually attracted to him (except katara but thats allowed) i mean he’s 12 - but his good nature, playful spirit, cute lil face and pure soul is the reason we STAN. i just wanna give him a hug.

Sokka: what can i say except goofball and newly-turned feminist. his nature seems immature and petty but he is the most loyal, driven person in the gaang. + dat hair when he lets it down.

Suki: She’s so chill and has a lot of personality, especially for a side character. Not to mention her amazing fighting skills.

Katara: she’s like the most patient and caring person in the world, but she can also freakin blood bend anyone who comes near her loved ones. shes a mother and a boss.

Azula: shes just scary. pretty, but also pretty scary. im just saying if you tried to kiss her theres a chance she might pull out your spine and whip you with it.

Ty Lee: a cinnamon roll and was the first to stand up to azula and betray the fire nation. she was always good at heart, but she was lost.

Toph: Sassy, but most importantly so freakin STRONG. Like how does all that power come in such a tiny, adorable package.

Avatar: the Last Airbender

I recently watched Avatar: the Last Airbender for the first time and I see alot of people talking about how much they love Zuko and I can see why. The poor boy was abandoned by his father and became a fugitive of the Fire Nation (his own kingdom) when he was only 16! They talk about how much they love Ty Lee, the cinnamon roll who can easily beat you in a fight or Azula, the manipulative mastermind who deserved better when you look into the specifics of her character. I'm not trying to say these people are invalid but I think y'all gotta give the other characters love too bc they're all fcukin gamazing!

Sokka is my boi, the best boi. I love him. This kid changed so much over the series and it didn't feel rushed or anything, I loved him from the start to the final episode! He starts off as a weak, sexist little bitch who's kinda funny and very obviously the comedy relief but as the series goes on he learns to respecc wamen, fight, think creatively and he learns how to stratagize and be a leader while still being the funniest character in the entire show, growing closer to his friends and learning how to be a better person! I have so much respect for this boi, this kid won a contest against a haiku master after accidentally breaking into a poetry night! All of this AND he got the best girls out of all of them, Suki and Yue. The fucking leader of the Kyoshi Warriors and the fucking MOON SPIRIT! Sokka is best boi and I Luv him, why y'all sleeping on this boi?????

Katara, Sokka's sister, last water bender of the southern water tribe and Avatar Aang's 2nd mentor throughout the series. Katara is a boss ass bitch. When she encountered sexism in the Northern water tribe, not only did she challenge the system for a better future, Katara challenged the exact man who refused to teach her to a fight. Katara, who was severely under trained, refused to give up unless she got her way and in the end became a master of waterbending, healing, bloodbending AND plant bending! Throughout the series Katara learns who not to trust and what makes a person untrustworthy. She learns to trust her friends but also tell them when they've gone too far and help them fix it. She is kind, caring and she grows up so much. 100/10 I stan.

Toph is a tough lil shit and she's so cool! She's a blind little girl but she won the earthbending championship and invented metalbending! Her parents underestimate her but Toph is literally the BEST earthbender there is and y'know what? That's cool as FUCK! Toph is also almost, if not, as funny as Sokka and her being blind is forgotten constantly by the main cast, not because they don't care but because Toph is more than just blind! Toph is just Toph. She's awesome and if you don't love Toph, you're either Loser Lord Ozai or a fucking bitch!

The one, the only, AVATAR AANG! This boy is so wholesome and caring. He's a sweetheart who wouldn't hurt a fly unless the fly kidnapped Appa and sold him to a circus in Ba Sing Se. He genuinely believes that no matter how much you hate the enemy, killing him (or her) will only escalate the issue but he's also 12 so he's also very naive and goofy. He learns many lessons on his journey to become a fully realised Avatar like not to let fame get to your head and I think it's really good that the show emphasises that at the end of the day, Aang is just a little boy. He never asked to be the avatar and he even tells Katara that he didn't want to be the avatar. The boy is so pure and he went through war too young and had so much responsibility placed on his shoulders, it was stressful! But at the end of the day, he did it with the help of his friends. I know that's kinda cheesy but that's literally how it went down. Aang is pure and we stan.

Uncle Iroh is so nice and calm and understanding and we stan. Every. Single. One. Of. Us. He is the BEST! Iroh is the best dad in the series and he encouraged Zuko to find his own way in the world and to find his own goals and be happy and my heart- I just- IT'S SO SWEET! Iroh is the kindest person in the entire Avatar series and he constantly builds others up and shares his wisdom with anyone who'll listen. Not only that but he's a musician so he gets extra cool uncle points. We stan Uncle Iroh. (Also Leaves From The Vine makes us all tearbend and it's really really sad.)

Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors. A badass bitch. Suki had Sokka's back and actively called him out on his bullshit when they first met! She taught him how to fight like a Kyoshi warrior and I really wish this made Sokka a more powerful fighter than he was. It almost feels like the writers forgot that she taught him how to fight. Either way this girl is skilled and although she might not have been able to beat Azula and Co., no one could so that doesn't make her a bad fighter. She is a great person and she's funny and smart as well. She's a sweetheart and we stan.

Yue, the girlfriend who turned into the moon. There isn't much to say about Yue since we didn't see her much throughout the series but she was sweet and it's heartbreaking that Sokka's gf turned into the moon. She was going to marry an asshole and I like to think she watches over Sokka and friends as the moon spirit. UwU

Mei is a very slept-on character, come on guys, Mei is SO badass! At first I thought she was just a snooty Fire Kingdom chick but no, she's got those motherfucking knives and she's SO skilled with them and AAAA, SHE'S SO BADASS! Mei is also v human, she's genuinely hurt when Zuko breaks up with her even though she likes to act like she hates everything. She might not be the nicest girlfriend but I think she genuinely loves him and I think that she and Zuko would be a great couple, they've just got one or two issues to sort out first and that's ok. I haven't seen the comic but I know they've had crushes on each other for a LONG time and since Zuko's disappeared he's grown a lot and Mei just hasn't quite adjusted to it yet but they love each other and Mei is absolutely head over heels for Zuko and no one can tell me otherwise! Mei acts like she doesn't care but she cares the mostest bro!

Jet genuinely makes me kinda sad. He died right as he was learning to control his anger against the Fire Nation. I know, he was going to flood an entire village just to kill some Fire Nation soldiers and he stole from an old man he claimed to be part of the Fire Nation and that's really bad but just like Zuko, I think Jet deserved the chance to grow and develop into a more compassionate and wise person. That's what he was talking about to Uncle Iroh when he went to Ba Sing Se. Of course, he's not gonna just let go of his hatred for the Fire Nation at the drop of a hat, he needs a mentor and that's why I was so upset when Jet died. I honestly thought he was gonna get a redemption arc like Zuko and I was kinda heart broken when he died. He could've been a really cool character but there IS a war going on and that's just what happens during a war, people die. Don't get me wrong, I'm still sad about it and I'm still upset that he tried to flood that village but I think Jet had the potential to be a really good person. It's a shame he had to die.

Teo is the name of the kid from the Northern air temple. I didn't want to call him the wheelchair boy because while it is a part of his character, it doesn't make him who he is. Teo is a cinnamon roll and I would die for him. I'm sure you probably didn't remember his name and neither did I but that doesn't mean I don't love him, it means he didn't get enough screen time! I loved to watch him flying with Aang and I think while it was a little scummy that his dad was tearing down and rebuilding a TEMPLE, Teo is a ray of sunshine and y'all would've loved him just as much as Ty Lee if he had the same amount of screen time but we don't have time to go into that. I love Teo, he is adorable!

Haru, I don't remember much about Haru. He was kind of forgettable. He's an earthbender who stands up against the Fire Nation when they steal his father. I didn't really find him all that special but I still loved his character arc and I was rooting for him the entire time! He's loyal, caring and hates the Fire Nation but unlike Jet, he understands when to draw the line. Haru doesn't actively search for ways to hunt down the Fire Nation soldiers, he just wanted his dad back like everyone else and like Katara, he takes care of the people around him. I forgot about him but I don't not care about him, Haru is a good character, we just didn't get to see him develop as a character. He feels bland but he's still good.

Korra: I do not understand how people dont like her. Shes spunky and doesnt take shit and she has her own opinions... definitely a Taurus with ADHD you cannot change my mind. I feel like the reason ppl dont like her is purely based on the fact that shes a poc and a woman with a strong opinion and mindset and we're all taught that that's not acceptable. Ppl just can't stand that shes not like Aang. ANYWAY I LOOOOVVVEEEEE HER AND I RELATE TO HER SO MUCH I know shes not canonically ADHD but I still feel very represented

Jinora: sooo different from what I imagined! I thought she'd be more of an extrovert!! Shes so cute tho and I love how shes clearly a daughter of Tenzin!!

Overall thoughts so far:

OKAY SO I've waited with watching this for such a long time bc I just figured it would disappoint me bc I love Atla so so much!! So I never got to watching it always coming up with excuses for myself. Now that it came to NETFLIX though, I had no excuses left and boy am I happy I didn't. This show has already been amazing so far. There are certain things I still dont really understand but I'm sure we'll get clarification on that (why couldn't Korra airbend and spirit thing yk why and how can Amon take away powers? Etc) I'm so excited to watch more! It hold my attention so so well, I love the characters (I LOVE KORRA!!!) Anyway I was not disappointed and that was a great surprise!! I'm gonna start on season 2 and write another on of these when I finish that!

* the first character i ever fell in love with: Can’t remember really? I liked them all. But I guess I liked Sokka a lot * a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: Azula? I was really into her when i was a teenager (and wrote that essay post about her which STILL gets notes sometimes) but now I feel a lil more conflicted bc if any other character did what she did I would Not like it. I guess because she’s a child I feel like she could still be redeemed, but also, she did some fucked up shit * a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: I think I used to be into Sokka/Azula? not like that hard but now i’m like. I don’t see it?? * my ultimate favorite character™: all of them? answer would change by the day.... today it’s Aang.
