Talk Shop Tuesday: What are your top tips for creating OCs?

OHO, this is a good question, thank you!!! Some things I've learnt in my years of creating OCs are:

Don't pressure yourself into trying to find out every detail about them the moment you have the idea. If all the details appear from the start, great, but if not, don't keep pushing and pushing yourself - the character will develop as you go along and you are not on a deadline.

In a similar vein, be prepared for them to change, and don't go fighting against the change - it can be scary, especially when it's an OC you've had for a while but not done much with, but trust me when I say that if they're changing it means they want and need to change for one reason or another. Heed that.

An offshoot of the above - when it comes to legacy OCs (children, siblings, etc), if the initial idea doesn't end up going anywhere, you can change what relationship they have to the canon characters. SO far I've had biological kids become adopted kids, adopted kids become biological kids, a daughter become a cousin and a daughter become a twin sister. It's honestly not that big a deal and it will get your ideas/story flowing again

If you're an OC creator who likes fancasting, accept from the start that you are never going to find someone who looks exactly like the character you're envisioning in your head. I made this mistake and it just led to frustration and it's not worth it. If you see someone who looks similar and who you feel is a good fit, that is all that matters! Don't get hung up on hair and eye colour - if it's really important you can easily just write these traits in the fic because you're not actually casting these people.

Don't centre them solely around the canon characters - admittedly this is a Your Mileage May Vary situation but for me, it's helped to have other OCs around my main ones, even if it's just their other relatives, because then you're establishing that yes, they have a life outside of the canon events and that's a good thing.

Okay so I was scouring jojowiki.com as usual and it says there that Diego's dinosaur form is based on an outdated record of a Utahraptor, and I don't know anything about them but I have a slight suspicion they were found in Utah.

I dunno just thought it was funny how to the point the name is. "it's a raptor in Utah, let's call it Utahraptor"

You blame Jim Kirkland over on his twitter for naming them that.

But yeah, "[Place name]saurus [place name]ensis" is a meme in the paleocommunity for a reason. (The word "ensis" meaning "from [place name]".) Image souce: Adam-Loves-Dinosaurs.

I think Utahraptor is probably the most famous one. When another large dromeosaur was found in Dakota, DePalma felt it natural to smash the usual dromeosaur suffix of "raptor" with the prefix of [Place name] to name Dakotaraptor.

It was discovered in (yes I'm using Wikipedia's text) Mǎmíngxī (马鸣溪 'horse-neighing brook') by Yang Zhongjian (楊鍾健), grandfather of Chinese Palaeontology. However, Yang wasn't from the area and mistook the intonation for the locale name. So he ended up calling it (馬門溪龍屬), from Mǎménxī (马门溪 'horse-gate brook').

That's probably the most fun one I can think of, but the others are like...

Koreacertops. Aegyptosaurus. Argentinosaurus. Patagotitan (Patagonia). Chilesaurus (Chile, but apparently it sounds like "dick" in latin countries?) Edmontosaurus (Canadian province, Edmonton). Albertosaurus (Candadian province Alberta, named after Princess Louise Carolina Alberta... named after Prince Albert). Gondwanasuchus (A crocodile actually, that was found in São Paulo, you know where, which USED to be part of the supercontinent Gondwana). Adamantisaurus is named from the same formation the croc was found, Adamantina.

Probably the most common kind of argument on the internet regarding dinosaurs at the moment is names and... IMO, it's not worth it unless it's REALLY bad or a bit mishandled, like Kuru kulla or Mamenchisaurus. But then, that's what the ICZN (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature) is usually for.

Anyway, Thanos is the worst dinosaur name in current use. Grapes, I need your Brazilian Portuguese expertise to write a strongly worded letter to Rafael Delcourt and Fabiano Vidoi Iori on good naming conventions. Obrigado Uva!

Do you think Lonnie is obsessed with her mother?

That depends on what you describe 'obsessed' as.

But in my personal opinion, no. Not really.

Look, I know she talks about her mom alot compared to other characters but that's easy to explain away.

She's the child of two warriors, who grew up up surrounded by several warriors and their wives. She comes from a traditional culture that can be a bit overbearing as seen in the Mulan movie and as in seen in many posts about families/places in that culture.

So assuming that she grew up there at least for a few years before moving to Auardon than that alone would have given her some problems with her identity as a not entirely feminine young lady.

And then she moves to Auardon where gendered sports are a thing and where female sports apparently don't exist even though that Fencing (which can't be too different from Swords and Shields) is as far as I'm aware a non gendered sport.

She was expected to act a certain way by teachers and her peers. And while it wasn't a big deal most of the time because she is feminine too, it did cause some conflicts for her growing up.

In theory at least.

And Lonnie, who seems to be going to school at a boarding school where her brother no longer attends probably had issues coming to term with who she was as a person. Probably had trouble coming to terms with her conflicting cultural beliefs and personality.

She's feminine yes. But she also loves sword fighting and sparring and hip hop and a ton of other non feminine things that kids would be cruel about (speaking from experience).

And being away from home wouldn't help. Especially after her brother graduated.

So, my theory is that Lonnie brings up her mom alot for a lot of reasons. Not only because she misses her but because she's everything Lonmie wants to be and because she's a convent throw away excuse to use whenever Lonnie has to defend the way she is.

Her mom is confident. Her mom is well liked. Her mom is strong and funny and nurturing and doesn't need to be feminine to get by. Her mom is beautiful without trying.

And part of Lonnie wants to be that.

But another part doesn't want to throw away her femininity.

Lonnie wants to be both. She wants to be all that and more.

She wants to be confident and strong and nurturing and funny but feminine as well. She wants to be accepted for who she is. For every side of her. For every part of her.

And until that can happen without people questioning her, without people dismissing her or accusing her of wanting to be special/wanting attention she will continue to bring up her mom.

Because no one really thinks twice about a kid wanting to be like their mom or dad. About a kid bringing their parent up as a reason for wanting to do something.

Plus, Lonnie wants to make her mom proud of her. So of course she'd bring her up alot. But no, she's not obsessed.

She just has a good relationship with her mother who she wants to make proud and issues with her identity because traditional places and sometimes even non traditional places aren't always accepting of people who are different.

break - What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest?

Losing a friend - specifically losing either Eddie or Alyssa but honestly losing any of her friends would fucking devastate her, like it would absolutely bring her to her knees, especially if it was during a superhero clash, if they were killed by a villain because the survivor's guilt would be horrendous. So far Steph hasn't had to face it...in this timeline, but in the Original Timeline she did end up losing Alyssa in a car accident and was inconsolable for months - Eddie was the one to eventually bring her out of it because he'd been there for her the whole time. It was painful for him to witness because he couldn't help beyond just being there - except of course that meant absolutely everything to Steph, who just needed someone.)

(In the current timeline, 1x07 is gonna put poor Steph through the wringer and ratchets up her determination to train up.)

failure: What's your OC's greatest failure? Have they been able to move past it? Does anyone else know about it?

Again, I know this hasn't happened in the series yet, but she'll consider 1x07 a failure, never mind that there isn't anything she could've done outside of being psychic and being in the building at the time. And there is another incident later on - not gonna go into too much detail, but let's just say a situation escalates despite her best attempts, and she's gonna blame herself for the person going on to hurt others even though it really isn't her fault.

future: What's the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it's a possibility?

In terms of external factors, I refer you to break - she cannot stand the thought of losing any of her friends and partly trains up to avoid that ever happening. In terms of Steph personally? Going too far over her limits for her force fields and dying - though Team Shieldmaiden have discussed risk factors, this is still somewhat in the abstract because right now she isn't actively fighting metas, and it's unlikely a metahuman will have enough power to push her over the limits.

(...for now.)

guilt: What is your OC guilty about? How do they handle their guilt? Do they try to avoid guilt, or do they accept it?

Steph's whole thing is that she wants to help as many people as she can - through her physics work, through the Meta Outreach Project, through just being kind to people - and she always feels so guilty when she can't help everyone, when she does, in fact, have to delegate for her own mental health. She knows this is better in the long run but also accepts that the guilt is going to stay for a while (she's trying to work on that though).

monster: Is your OC monstrous in any way? Is there something that makes them monstrous? Are they aware of their own monstrosity? Do they accept it or reject it?

Steph's not monstrous at all.

Hi! This is about your recent book post. Could you give more of your opinions on "Gwen & Art Are Not in Love" and "Something That May Shock and Discredit You" ? They're both on my TBRs but I haven't gotten around to either one yet.

“Gwen & Art Are Not in Love” was a lot of fun and kind of silly. It does give off YA vibes (not a bad thing if you’re looking for something you really don’t have to think about too much when reading) but I was thoroughly enjoying the story and the characters. If you want an unserious read with a happy ending full of queer characters I would recommend it. I described it to my friend as “taking a messy gay and lesbian friendship to another level.”

“Something That May Shock and Discredit You” is the best trans autobiography I’ve read so far (maybe ever bc I liked it so much I can’t see anything topping it). The author brings so much humor, pop culture reference, and personal experiences together then effortlessly mashes them together. There were points where I couldn’t stop laughing or grinning. Genuinely such an enjoyable read.

Sorry this was late! I’m in my last semester of college and am swamped with work.

What would happen if Shan Shiro, by pure chance, happened to meet them?

He would probably see all the dead Tremaines whose deaths are on him in them. Meanwhile Anthony is willing to kill Shiro if he comes within a hundred meters of his children.

Well, you're absolutely correct about Shiro seeing all the dead Tremaines and Anthony being 100% willing to kill Shiro if he gets close to his kids....that is, if Anthony even knew Shiro was around them.

Which he wouldn't.

Because Shiro would do his best to make sure he wasn't seen.

By the time Harriet and Anthony got married and had a baby, Shiro had been alone for many years. Bitter and near forgotten. Wandering the world on his own and watching his former friends from the shadows.

You could say it was creepy-- and Shiro wouldn't deny it, because he knew it was. But he didn't really care.

He had to atone for his sins in some way, after all. And this was how he was gonna go about it.

By sticking to the shadows and stalking his former friends-- mainly Anthony-- and their families. And protecting them.

Which he did alot over the years by doing various things;

Taking out muggers following Dizzy.

Slipping money in Anthony and Harriet's pockets when they needed the extra money.

Hiding flammable things from Cj.

Hiding alcohol from Harry and making sure he got home safe when drunk.

And most importantly, protecting The Hook-Tremaine-Rose kids from themselves and others.

Anthony and Harriet had two kids; Tommy and Katie Tremaine.

Ginny and Clay had five; Gabe, Tim, Connie, and May Clayton.

Harry and Audrey had four;

Alex, Mordermore, Jesse, and Annie Hook-Rose.

Cj and Zevon had one;

Carter Zoran Hook.

Dizzy had twins;

Dustin and Denny.

And Shiro watched them all, intervening when needed-- all the while making sure to stay out of sight.

He had stopped many disasters from occurring.

He stopped Tommy from falling down the stairs when he was a baby.

He stopped Katie from running out into traffic as a toddler.

He stopped Alex from drowning.

He stopped Mordermore from being humiliated by a group of mean boys in middle school.

He stopped Gabe from getting into his dad's hunting supplies.

He saved Tim from his allergic reaction.

He saved Connie from Gothel.

And he saved May from having her youth stolen.

He stopped Jesse from getting arrested.

He stopped Annie from jumping into shark infested water when she was 4 and wanted to go swimming.

He stopped Carter from drinking Zevon's potions and from falling from the mast.

And he had stopped the twins from swallowing random things they had found around the salon.

And he protected the Charmings' descendants too.

Never revealing himself and never once taking credit for his deeds. Never once regretting a thing.

He had to atone for his sins.

Why shouldn't he do it this way?

By being the last Tremaines' and their family's Guardian angels?

What did he have to lose?
